The Last Stand I was with the Filipinos And we had backed into Bataan. Came the last day offighting, And a shell had laid me low; Then I heard the lines were breaking. So I waited for the blow. While bleeding in the bamboo With my fever running high. A horse pulled up from nowhere With a funny-looking guy That swung from off his saddle, Then dropped the bridle down, And walked into the thicket Where I was tossing on the ground. The horseman was a picture, With long and golden hair, Tall and blond complexioned, He bore a martial air. His boots were high and heavy-spurred; His gauntlets full and wide; Two pistols and a cavalry sword Hung loosely by his side. "Ah, the Twenty-Sixth!" I shouted. "Is the cavalry up the way?" The horseman smiled and shook his head, And then I heard him say: "The Little Big Horn, Corregidor, Dunkirk or Bataan Garry and I will forever ride Where brave men make their stand. Acknowledgments Many friends and associates helped make this book possible. My wife Ann helped me the most by reading and proofing the manuscript and making many suggestions to improve it, especially when I dealt with organization and numbers. She said this was an important story that should be published. Two new friends contributed unsparingly to the publication of this book. Penny Leas read and proof read the manuscript, provided many valuable editing suggestions, and ensured that the final manuscript was ready for printing. Desiree Terry volunteered her time to prepare the covers and the introductory pages for each chapter. She also suggested innovative ways to improve the format . In addition, Desiree worked to make the maps and illustrations more attractive and then worked with Penny Leas to prepare the final manuscript for printing. Both believed that the story needed to be told, and for that I am deeply grateful. Tom McCann of Commonwealth Films in Boston, an inspiring author, film writer, and producer, reviewed the manuscript and encouraged me to go forward and publish it. His wife, Joan, said the story reminded her of "walking through the Vietnam Memorial."! Professor Ralph Weber, a distinguished historian with family connections to this era - his wife and her mother were civilian POWs of the Japanese and his wife's father died on a POW ship - also reviewed the manuscript and provided many valuable suggestions. World War II infantry officer, Herbert Goodman, and his wife, Mary, gave unstinting support. Herb went out of his way to send copies of the manuscript to people he thought would support its publication. My friend, the late Captain Bob Morrison, USN-Retired, a submariner with deep interest in the Pacific War, added useful comments. So did his wife, author Susan Keyes Morrison, a classmate at the American School in Manila and at La Jolla High School in California. Two other friends - Nina Alford, an award-winning American History teacher, and Nancy Huebsch Rosasco , another respected classmate from La Jolla High School - read the manuscript and provided many useful suggestions. Retired Army Lieutenant Colonel John Lewis gave me a copy of an unpublished manuscript that covered some of the actions of 26 t h Cavalry officers who fought in the Visayas and on Mindanao. He also loaned me an invaluable book about U. S . chaplains who served in the Philippines and in the POW camps. These sources provided vital information for the book.
vii
Dwight Beach, another friend, gave me access to his family's papers concerning his uncle who died on a POW ship. Moreover, he promised to buy many books to give to his family in remembrance of his uncle. My kind of guy. Lastly, my thanks to Jim Fleeger for providing me with his dad's diaries and letters and associated family papers and photographs. I deeply appreciate all the comments made to improve the manuscript and all the
assistance given to get this book published.

Benny Havens
From Nevada's hoary ridges, from stormy coasts of Maine, From Lava Beds and Yellow Stone the Story never waned; Wherever duty called, they went, their steps were never slow, With "Alma Mater, " on their lips and "Benny Havens, Oh."
When this life's troubled sea is o'er and our last battle's through,
If God permits us mortals there his blest domain to view, Then we shall see in glory crowned, in proud celestial row, Thefriends we've known and loved so well at Benny Havens, Oh!
