Regine Velasquez got emotional yesterday, February 11, because some of her fans bashed her stepdaughter Leila Alcasid. It all started with Leila’s Snapchat photo of her and Regine with a caption that read "PA for the day." News_Mobile Regine, for her part, has been vocal about supporting Leila's decision to move to the Philippines and try her luck in showbiz. Leila is Ogie’s 19-year-old daughter with ex-wife Michelle van Eimeren, who's based in Australia. Some Twitter users, however, reacted negatively and wrote that Regine, also known as Asia’s Songbird, doesn’t deserve to be called a “PA” or personal assistant. REGINE DEFENDS LEILA. In a series of Twitter posts, Regine expressed her dismay over criticisms hurled against her stepdaughter. The Kapuso singer-actress firmly explained that the "PA for the day" photo was just a “little joke” between her and Leila. Regine wrote: “@spiglao grabe ka naman magsalita. The netizen with the handle @jaypee41378 was lamenting the long absence of Kris from TV. @jaypee41378 also suggested that Kris consider making a comeback to her former TV network. The netizen’s comment partly read: “sana po mabigyan po kayo ng chance to talk, lunch or dinner with the AbsCbn bosses. “mahal ka pa rin ng Abs Cbn... “panghawakan mo yung sinabi ni mam charo & gabby lopez.’she will always be a kapamilya.’” The netizen was referring to former ABS-CBN President Charo Santos and ABS-CBN Chairman Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III. She was chewing a bit of gum and her hand fluttered against and away from her face and her heart as her eyes welled with tears and her expression wavered between happiness and disbelief. Before the televised portion of the ceremony but after winning for pop vocal performance, Adele told Access Hollywood that to celebrate her firstever Grammy, "usually I'd have a whole bottle of champagne, but I've stopped drinkin', so I'm going to have a Coca-Cola and a few cigarettes, just chill out and call my mum."

Is American Idol Getting Revived Already?
Well, that didn’t take long. American Idol’s revival could be nigh. NBC is in talks to bring the long-running singing competition back with a deal with Fremantle Media, according to Variety. Variety reports NBC has pitched a revival and producer Fremantle is mulling options. But what about The Voice? That could go from two cycles to one, the report says. NBC declined to comment on the story. American Idol ran for 15 seasons on Fox starting in 2002. During its heyday, it was the highest rated show on TV. The final season, which aired in 2016, averaged just above 9 million viewers, down starkly from the 36 million it peaked at.

f it’s a Friday during the awards season, you know what time it is. Yes, it’s time for a new set of Academy Award predictions! We’re now only a few short weeks away from the Oscars, so the precursors are beginning to wrap up, leading to some definitive frontrunners. There are still some potential surprises to come, but they’re getting to be fewer and further in between. Right now, we’re a couple of days away from voting beginning (Monday, specifically), so it’s a big of a holding pattern. Once ballots are in hand, we might start to get a final feel for how the races might turn out. Until then, we wait and predict. There’s only some small tinkering below, but more will be coming during the next few weeks, as predictions get locked in. I feel like a handful
of the major categories are sewn up, particularly Best Picture/Best Director for La La Land/Damien Chazelle, as well as Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali in Moonlight and Best Supporting Actress for Viola Davis in Fences. Best Actress seems likely to be Emma Stone in La La Land, while La La Land is duking it out with Manchester by the Sea in Best Original Screenplay and Arrival is battling Moonlight in Best Adapted Screenplay. The big question mark among the big eight right now is Best Actor, where Casey Affleck for Manchester by the Sea is locked in basically a tie with Denzel Washington for Fences. That one especially is going to go all the way down to the wire…

While definitely one of my favorites, I advise you get the crew’s take on which of their dishes would best satisfy you.

hile traveling to see North’s own version of Boracay—Patar Beach, I stumbled across an interesting wisdom that most memorable restaurants are cunningly rested in the not-so-obvious places. And true to that experience, Bolinao is unmasked to a promise of tempting sensations. A lot of people have ventured to this third class municipality over the years in search of some sort of a dream. While tourist centers flock the place, I was left with a cryptic reference to the deadly sea urchins regularly harvested at Isla Silaki. Which begged the question: “What the hell does it taste like?!” and “Where can I find one, anyway?” It’s certainly a place where only few know how this remote fishing enclave was distinctively put to map. Bolinao is probably best known for the controversial hard coal spill on 2007, and its American-built Cape Bolinao Lighthouse at Patar that rises 351 feet above sea level atop Punta Piedra Point, a towering hill of solid rock which is the sharp point of Cape Bolinao itself.
There are two reasons why I say this. First, most restaurant owners’ game plan is to figure out what their community is missing, and fill that niche. Secondly, they simply want to share a dish they’ve always loved, but can’t seem to find in the cities they’ve chosen to call home. From the outside, I thought it was a beer patch owing to the suspended lights and stilt houses. It’s not air-conditioned but since the dining area has pawid instead of galvanized iron for roof, it made the dining experience relatively cool. There were also constant breezes, and the warbling of the wind was music to my lethargic ears. A plate of medium-sized freshlycooked shrimps costs P160 to P190, depending on bulk; mussels costs about P120 per serving. I also demanded for pinakbet because it would be a sin not to devour one being in the Ilocos region, and some grilled pork because
I’m a meat person. I like nothing more than fatty, tender, juicy meat. It’s a dish that when finished, leaves you feeling refreshed and satisfied. Their rich and visually stunning seafood soup cradled in either an aromatic butter or light, flakey shells, has won my appetite. But that’s broth. Wait ‘til you have a taste of their intensely-flavored deep-fried bangus served on a bed of rice. Black peppers permeate a covering of delicious bread crumbs. Make sure to smear a little of the bottom of your plate with bagoong to ensure you get plenty of sauciness in every bite. “All the people that come here are really knowledgeable. We get that question all the time. ‘What’s the most popular? What’s your favorite?’ And we answer them back, ‘Well, what do you like?’ We have varieties of seafood, meat, and vegetables. Chances are, there’s going to be something on our menu that you’re going to respond to.
I thought I’d use this dubious idea for a framework to investigate its beauty that people oftentimes dispense with taking multiple photos yet don’t know a place’s history. And as the spine of my section I’m starting to call “The Hungry Plate”, looking at various storytelling structures settled on terrific food is a pretty, goodlooking template. Hear ye, hear ye!

Collagen, the stuff of ligaments and skin, and the most abundant protein in the human body, has an extraordinary role in triggering chemical signals that help protect the body from cancer, a new study reveals. Scientists at The Institute of Cancer Research, London, have uncovered a series of chemical signals sent out by collagen that appear to protect against cancer’s growth. Boosting those signals could act as an effective treatment for cancers that grow in the presence of collagen, including squamous cell lung cancer, for which no targeted treatments currently exist. And the findings suggest that switching off these chemical signals, as some treatments for leukemia do, is likely to be counter-productive in cancers where interaction with collagen plays an important role. The study was funded by The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), the Wellcome Trust and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC). The ICR team explored the role of signals triggered by collagen in human embryonic kidney cells, a type of cell often used in studies of this type. They analysed the role of a molecule called DDR2, which relays signals from collagen as a means of maintaining tissue structure and function, and is mutated in some forms of squamous cell lung cancer.
They treated cells with collagen, and found that DDR2 responded by activating a second protein called SHP-2, in a process that appears to be important in protecting against the growth of some cancers. But a specific mutant form of DDR2 present in some squamous cell lung cancers seemed unable to signal through SHP-2, suggesting the loss of function had left the tissue vulnerable to cancer growth. That finding offers an exciting opportunity to design the first targeted treatments for squamous cell lung cancer, perhaps by mimicking the action of SHP-2 to re-erect the normal controls against cancer’s growth in the presence of collagen. Dr Paul Huang, Team Leader in Protein Networks at The Institute of Cancer Research, said: “We knew collagen was capable of slowing the growth of some cancer types, presumably by maintaining the structure of tissues, but our new study for the first time identifies how this effect occurs in lung cancer. “We sifted through data on 428 different proteins stimulated by collagen, and isolated just one we think can play a key role in protecting tissues from cancer. Identifying this molecular trigger opens up the prospect of targeted treatments for squamous cell lung cancer.” “Importantly, we also highlighted the duplicitous nature of this important signalling network. Although we know it directs a lot of cellular processes that can contribute to cancer -- such as differentiation, proliferation and motility www.filipinostarmagazine.com

That means we will need to treat cancers that develop in collagen-rich environments differently to blood cancers such as leukemia.” Professor Alan Ashworth, Chief Executive of The Institute of Cancer Research, said: “Survival rates for lung cancer remain extremely poor, and one of the ways to improve this is to discover new ways of targeting the disease with drugs. This new study is valuable for two reasons -it identifies an exciting new potential route for treating lung cancers, and it also shows us why some other approaches are unlikely to work. “Scientifically, these results are very interesting as they demonstrate how one of the most common proteins in the human body plays a role not only in building the structure of tissues but also in cancer.”
