Hashtag Jon Lucas admits he’s now a father and a married man Diretsong sinagot ni Jon ang tanong kung totoong nakabuntis siya na naging dahilan ng pagkakasuspinde niya sa It’s Showtime.

PHILIPPINE SHOWBIZ NEWS

Is this the next chapter in Coco Martin’s career?

C

oco Martin was only nine when he landed his first job.He was tasked to collect payments for his paternal grandmother’s informal lending business, which allowed him to learn and navigate the busy streets of Manila. A selfconfessed “laking-kalye,” Coco found ways to earn money to help his Lola Matilde, from whom he learned his enterprising ways. While in college, he auditioned for roles in TV commercials. After graduating with a degree in hotel and restaurant management, he took on various jobs—as a waiter, promodizer, and ad model. “Minsan, namimigay ako ng alak sa bar, mga sampler ng yosi,” he told YES! magazine in 2015. “Namimigay ng candy sa mga gasoline station.” His philosophy: “Basta magkatrabaho lang.” He applied the same gung-ho attitude when he started acting in indie films. When he got cast in Brilliante

6

Mendoza’s Masahista, he didn’t fully understand the sensitivity of the role; he was merely focused on the fact that it had potential to compete in international film festivals. “Pangarap kong magtrabaho abroad, kaya [kinuha] ko talaga yung opportunity,” he explains. After working several jobs in Canada while on a tourist visa, Coco decided to come home. “Sabi ko, lulunukin ko na yung pride ko, kailangan ko nang bumalik sa Pilipinas, kasi wala ring mangyayari sa akin do’n. Ano’ng gagawin ko sa Canada kung wala naman akong trabaho?” While fixing requirements for a job as a casino waiter in Rizal, Coco received a call from Direk Brilliante. The director wanted to cast him in Tirador, and Coco agreed. This would be the start of Coco’s winning streak: He eventually had a steady stream of indie projects, sometimes filming up to four movies www.filipinostarmagazine.com

in one month. Coco eventually crossed over to mainstream television, getting his big break on the primetime serye Tayong Dalawa. Hit movies then followed, and Coco transformed into a matinee idol and now, a bankable action star. His hit series Ang Probinsyano is two months shy of celebrating its third year on the air, a feat almost unheard of in this showbiz climate where a show can be canceled after only a few weeks. And last year, Coco made his directorial debut via the Metro Manila Film Festival entry Ang Panday, which he also produced, co-wrote, and starred in. His hard work and perseverance are paying off, but the actor isn’t resting on his laurels. He has gone through more kinds of jobs than he could count, represented Filipino talent in many countries around the world, and has played different roles over

Filipino Star Magazine. Vancouver Edition. July 2018

the years. Now, he’s taking on a new challenge: singing. Coco used to be shy performing onstage but has since learned to overcome it to bring joy to his supporters. “’Pag sumampa na ako, lalo na pag malayong probinsya, minsan lima o pito ang kinakanta ko... kasi ayoko naman yong parang dumaan lang, ‘yong hindi napasaya yong tao. Ipagkakait ko ba ‘yon? Ang tagal nagantay ng mga ‘yon... Sagarin ko na!”

Coco’s life story captures the meaning of this song, entitled “Ating Tagumpay.” He has gone from “laking-kalye” to one of the biggest Pinoy stars of this generation, thanks to these qualities that he embodies and are found in the lyrics: diskarte, sipag, and tiyaga.

He’s already an award-winning actor, producer, and director. What’s next for Coco?

This July, Coco released a song that speaks of Pinoys’ diskarte, not to mention their intelligence and bravery. It also talks about the grit and perseverance present in them and how together they can reach greater heights.

While he has achieved success because of his own hard work, Coco couldn’t have done it alone. From his Lola Matilde to notable filmmakers and his loyal fans, other people have helped him rise to the top. When Coco sings “Ating Tagumpay,” he may very well be referring to sharing his triumph with them.

If Coco asks his fellow Pinoys to help each other, many will surely listen to him sing these lyrics: “Malayo na’ng inabot / ng iyong diskarte’t galing / at kung sabay ang paglakbay / tiyak ang ating tagumpay.” He’s proof that success needs not only your own talents and efforts but also of others.

Maricar Reyes on husband Richard Poon: “I told him lahat ng baho ko na nakakahiya.”

M

Rebelasyon ni Maricar, “Noong hindi pa kami dating ni Richard, I made some mistakes of my own sa past.”

But eventually, there was one evening, I don’t know if you remember, na tinawagan ko siya ulit. Naisip ko, ‘Bahala na.’ Pa-cute pa ako, kasi nakakatakot, e.

“Kung ayaw na niya ako after telling him all the things that I wanted to tell him, e, di huwag. Edi tapos na. At least, before anything got more complicated, nasabi ko na,” saad ni Maricar. Sinang-ayunan naman ito ni Richard.

It’s very difficult to tell bad things about yourself to your partner Siyempre gusto mo magpa-impress, di ba?

Rhian Ramos, Andre Paras laugh off rumored romance with her in Taste Buddies. I’ve known her off-cam before. I guess we’re just really close. You know naman how people are basta kasama mo ang isang tao, may issue, which is fine.” “All you have to do is explain,” ani Andre sa set ng The Clash ngayong Huwebes ng hapon, July 19.

Rhian Ramos and Andre Paras have mutual admiration for each other. In a recent interview, Rhian said about being linked to Benjie Paras’s son, “That’s so cute! I’m a huge Andre Paras fan.” In a separate interview, Andre confessed, “Crush ko yun ever since.”

T

“That’s so cute! I’m a huge Andre Paras fan,” nakangiting reaksiyon ni Rhian nang tanungin tungkol sa isyung ito. Patuloy niya, “I really think that he’s one of the most adorable funny people in show business. “I love him. But, I mean, we’re not romantic... I don’t even we know each other that well to be sweet.

It just so happen that parehas kaming nag-Hep-Hep Hooray. Tapos magkatabi kami nun and parehas kaming na-knockout, pumunta kami sa photo booth, tapos nag-picture kami.” “That’s probably why because nagpicture kami, ‘tapos kaming dalawa lang yung nasa picture.” Pero giit ni Rhian, “We’re not anything. Friends, and I’m an Andre Paras fan.”

“I guess that’s what people would think, basta may kasamang ibang lalaki, ‘Uy, kayo na.’” “I guess, on our part, we need to explain. “We’re just close,” diin ni Andre. Kuwento pa niya, “Crush ko yun ever since. Nagmi-message nga kami sa Instagram, ‘Look at this link, may nagsabi na tayo.” “We’re, like, ‘What? How did it become that big?’ “Pero, of course, we just laughed about it. “Ganun naman talaga yun, minsan nami-misinterpret ng mga tao. “But it’s okay, we’re here to explain naman both our side.” As Posted on PEP.PH

Pia Wurtzbach on trans women joining Miss Universe: “It is allowed.”

P

“It is allowed in Miss Universe. You can compete, you can win. “You don’t have to be a natural-born woman to win Miss Universe,” pahayag ni Pia sa panayam ng ABS-CBN News noong nakaraang linggo. MAXINE NOT IN FAVOR. Bukod kay Pia, pabor din si Miss Universe Philippines 2018 Catriona Gray na sumali sa pageant ang trans women. Pero salungat dito si Miss Universe Philippines 2016 Maxine Medina. Paliwanag niya, “Kung gusto talaga nilang sumali, may mga pageants naman na for them, na right for them, so let’s just give them an idea na meron naman talagang pageant for them. “Para naman equal din sa girls, di ba? “Siyempre, may mga gusto din tayong i-share, lalo na sa mga women.” Sagot naman ni Maxine sa impormasyong pinapayagan ng Miss Universe Organization (MUO) na sumali ang hindi natural-born women, “Well, that’s good. I don’t have anything to say, yung president [MUO] na ang nagsabi. So it’s with them.” Bukod kay Maxine, hindi rin pumapabor si Reina Hispanoamericana 2017 Teresita Ssen “Winwyn” Marquez na makasali ang trans women sa Miss Universe pageant, pero idiniin niyang nasa MUO pa rin ang desisyon at irerespeto niya ito. Naging malaking usapin ang pagsali ng trans women sa Miss Universe dahil sa pagkakahirang kay Angela Ponce, isang trans woman, bilang Miss Universe Spain 2018.

Morissette’s Journey to Stardom www.filipinostarmagazine.com

Filipino Star Magazine. Vancouver Edition. July 2018

M

orissette, a native from Cebu City, came from a family of musicians. She revealed that her father, whose genre is rock, influenced and taught her how to sing. Her genre, on the other hand, is usually POP, OPM, ballad, and R&B. Did you know that her family discovered she can sing when they heard her sing Regine Velasquez-Alcasid’s “You are My Song”? The Asia’s Phoenix is a product of different talent searches in the country. She started joining singing competitions when she was only a kid. When she became a teenager, she did her best to be a part of TV 5’s Talentadong Pinoy. Her journey did not stop there. When she was asked to audition for the Artista Search of TV 5, the Star Factor, she actively participated and was chosen by the judges as a finalist. She traveled to Manila, competed with other hopefuls, and eventually landed as runner-up. She also auditioned for Repertory Philippines’ Disney’s Camp Rock: The Musical and notched the lead role of Mitchie Torres. She again tried her luck when her burning passion for singing motivated her to audition for The Voice of the Philippines. She belted out Beyonce’s Love on Top that wowed Sarah Geronimo, who became her vocal coach. She was a competitive contestant in the competition which led her to be part of ASAP, ABS-CBN’s Sunday noontime entertainment show. In 2014, she held her very first solo concert entitled “This is Me” and celebrated her 18th birthday celebration at the same time. It was during this event when she informed her audience that she became an official artist of Star Records. It was also this year when she interpreted “Akin Ka Na Lang,” an original song composition of Kiko Salazar

She did not only impress Filipino audience, she had also created a lasting impact to Jessie J, an internationallyknown singer. When Morissette had this rare chance to interview Jessie J for MYX, a prominent music channel, she revealed that she performed one of the pop star’s songs when she competed in The Voice of the Philippines. Jessie J then asked Morissette to sing in front of her. Morissette sang a portion of the international singer’s hit song “Who You Are.” This prompted Jessie J to invite Morissette to perform with her during her concert later in the evening. In 2015, Star Records launched Morissette, the first self-titled studio album of the extraordinary young diva, which opened more opportunities for her. She recorded theme songs for ABS-CBN’s hit movies, she starred in a musical, she received prestigious awards, she performed for different concerts, Himig Handog’s P-Pop Love Songs competition and Wish 107.5, an all-hits FM radio station in the country.

She became a co-host of Michael Bolton and had the chance to sing for him and with him during the Asian Dream Tour of the award-winning singer at the Grand Ballroom of Marriott Manila

She became a regular artist on ASAP as one of the “Birit Queens.” She is also one of the most sought-after Filipino performers who sing abroad for the OFWs, overseas Filipino workers, through TFC, The Filipino Channel. LET FOOD BE THY MEDICINE...

- Hippocra tes

Collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies. It is found in our muscles, bones, skin and tendons and is referred to as the ‘glue’ that helps hold the body together. It also gives our skin strength and elasticity, and helps replace dead skin cells.

WHY DO WE NEED COLLAGEN As we age, our body’s collagen production naturally slows down. It is easy to tell as it can be seen through sagging skin, wrinkles and weaker cartilage in our joints. Our body’s collagen production can further be slowed down when we smoke, expose ourselves to sun and eat food that are high in sugar.

TYPES 1, 2 AND 3 COLLAGEN AND THEIR FUNCTIONS Type 1

The most abundant type of collagen in the human body. It plays a role in the formation and overall health of the skin, reticular fiber, vascular ligature, placenta, organs, bone (main component of the organic part of bone) and teeth (dentin).

Type 3

A protein that is found in extensible connective tissues such as skin, lungs and the vascular system often in association with Type 1 collagen. It is the 2nd most abundant collagen of soft tissues and dominates early phases of wound healing and granulation tissue formation. Secreted by fibroblasts and other mesenchymal cell types, thus making it a major player in various inflammation-associated pathologies such as lung injury, viral and non-viral liver diseases, kidney fibrosis, hernia, and vascular disorders.

Type 2

Responsible for the formation and function of cartilage and joint.

Over 90% of the total collagen in the human body is Type 1 collagen. The interplay of Type 1 and Type 3 collagen responsible for normalized function associated with inflammation, eyes, internal organ specially lungs and the cardiovascular system. Fountain of Youth Collagen is most abundant in Type 1 and Type 3 collagen.

WHAT ARE THE SOURCES OF COLLAGEN? •

Mostly Type 2 Collagen.

Risk of mad cow disease.

Cheap collagen.

• •

The most complete collagen profile.

Low levels of Type 2 Collagen.

Abundant in Type 1 & Type 3 Collagen

Risk of foot & mouth disease and bird flu viruses.

and some Type 2 Collagen.

COW(Bovine)

Wild caught, cleanest form of collagen.

Most expensive form of collagen.

Cheapest collagen.

frankie cena

The Untold Story

By: Fahad Mohammed Posted on Future Sharks

F

rancesco Cena “Frankie” is an entrepreneur, host, singer, debater and CEO of Fostering Debate Talent Academy. A multi- talented individual, Frankie has competed in many competitions from debates to singing to Mr. World and even hosting Miss World; we dive into the busy life of Frankie.

What’s your story? I love to divide my story in to two parts. The first is about a young boy that really enjoyed public speaking, and years later opened up his own business—Fostering Debate Talent (FDT) Academy. I was a debater and public speaker throughout high school, and a debate and public speaking coach throughout my university degree. My students did very well—they travelled throughout Canada and the world and won many many championships. So I got to a place where I could open a debate coaching business based wholly on my own brand. We’re about to enter our second year and I couldn’t be happier with the way the business has grown, how many people we’re impacting, and the fact that I get to work with my mom and sister, who are both integral parts of the business. The second part of my story is about a young boy who always just loved to perform, and eventually got to host Miss World, the world’s oldest and largest beauty pageant. To get there I took singing lessons and performed on stages around the world, and also pursued acting, modeling and hosting. Eventually I represented Canada at the Mr. World competition, and was very fortunate to have won that competition’s talent portion and to have placed in the top 10. I was even more fortunate to get a call, two years later, to host the next edition of Mr. World; and, later that same year, to host Miss World 2014. I take my performance career just as seriously as my coaching career, so a lot of my story up until now has been about trying to become an absolute success in both. How did you develop a passion for singing? People ask me this a lot, and the truth is—I don’t really know why I love singing so much. I don’t think I have any singing role models, or huge moments in my life that turned me into a singer. All I know is that, as a kid, I wrote songs with my neighbours, watched American Idol religiously, begged my music teacher to let me join the choir a year early—and was just always sure that it was my dream. But I also remembering losing a lot of singing competitions, as a kid. So even though I was the most committed to it, I wasn’t necessarily the best at it, and I had to work very, very hard. I had to go back to those singing competitions over and over again in order to conquer them; to get myself on to some of the biggest stages in the world; and then, eventually, to win Mr. World Talent. Why did you start a debate coaching business? Before opening a debate academy in Vancouver, there wasn’t really a culture for instructing speech and debate through a formalized training program. I’d seen piano classes, I’d seen afterschool tutoring programs for English and math, I’d seen kids join sports teams, but why wasn’t there an elite academy for those who want to be the best public speakers and debaters in the world? For future lawyers, for future politicians? The market had a huge gap in Vancouver and, really, in the world, and I knew I had to fill that gap, and that this was the right time to do it. How have you been able to build a business yet keep your passion for singing and entertainment alive? I used to really agonize over this. For a while I was convinced that my career had to settle in to some master plan, and that my passion for singing and my passion for business and public speaking had to be pre-balanced, in my head. I think I’ve www.filipinostarmagazine.com

FORMER MR. WORLD CANADA they did, I was also quick to strike when the iron was hot. Tell us about your hosting Miss World and what you have gained from that experience. Hosting Miss World has been by far the most incredible and shocking experience of my life. I knew so little about beauty pageants and hosting. So not only did I have to now meet a hundred and twenty women from around the world with different stories, goals, aspirations—I had to learn voiceovers, script writing, earpieces, reading autocue, teleprompter, live hosting, recorded hosting, interviews, in-depth interviews, all on the spot. The Miss World organization has given me fans, it’s given me followers, it’s given me my dream job, but most importantly it’s given me the training and the skills to become the ultimate host that I’ve always wanted to be—to be a Ryan Seacrest and to be a Jeff Probst. So all I can say is, if you’re thrown to the wolves, don’t be afraid to fight. You could come out of it a completely different—stronger—person.

3-time host of the Miss World, UK and a good friend of Megan Young realised that it’s much smarter to just keep my eyes and ears open for opportunities, and pounce on them whenever they come by. When Miss World wanted me to work for them while I was just starting my company, for example, I thought to myself—“What am I supposed to do? I’m opening this academy, and here’s Miss World, asking me to fly off for ten weeks.” It was the toughest decision. But I knew that a contract with Miss World wasn’t going to come along every day, and that I had to take it because that was the opportune time to move forward with my entertainment career. So while I didn’t expect a lot of the breaks I got in singing, acting, hosting and debate to crop up when www.filipinostarmagazine.com

What future projects/plans do you have for your business or entertainment career or personal? On the business side, FDT academy will start its second year in September, and we will finally be in our own commercial space. This is the development from teaching at my house, teaching at client’s houses, teaching in a large residential property of one of my clients, to finally having our own storefront, our own signage, our own home. I can’t wait to expand the business, and we’re already looking forward to an amazing September school year with many new clients. On the entertainment side, I hope to be back with the Miss World team, continuing off the success of the Miss World “Headto-Head Challenge”, which is a project that I was invited to spearhead and work on last season. So I hope to be able to go back to the competition to do that, and be with the contestants in Sanya, China.

“LET F OOD BE YO U R MED IC INE. ..”

“Just before I hit 40, neither my physical nor mental health was in a good state. I went to my doctor who prescribed me sleeping pills to deal with stress. I had to take them religiously just to get a good nights sleep. After 2 years of taking sleeping pills, my health worsened and went on a downward spiral. New illnesses cropped up, which I now had to deal with; fibromyalgia gravis myasthenia. By the 4th year, my hair started falling due to alopecia and soon half of my head was bald. I was told by my doctor that there was no cure for the hair loss and that I should just consider getting a hair transplant. It was at this point that I decided to take the reigns of my own wellness.

I drink Fountain of Youth Collagen with my coffee everyday to increase my immunity and energy levels.

I used to work in the pharmaceutical industry so I was familiar with international guidelines on treatment protocols. I began my research and stumbled on the many benefits of collagen. After 6 weeks of taking collagen, I could already see the results and I started to feel so much better! I took a trip to Asia, where foods high in collagen is abundant. I was in search of the best collagen in the world, only to come full circle and find it back home in Canada.

WITH ALOPECIA

This is when I developed Fountain of Youth Collagen, a tasteless, odorless, pure collagen powdered drink made from wild fish caught in the pristine waters of Canada. It is the only collagen that is Kosher and Halal certified.

There is also topical application of collagen, which I believe is useless and more of a marketing propaganda. Subcutaneous injections and intravenous applications are very invasive and rather expensive. There is also the added risk of elevating creatinine levels with I.V. infusion, which can damage the kidneys while infections can happen with on site injections.” DR.
