New student loan repayment counseling available in Minnesota Minnesota, which ranks 5th in the nation for student debt, is taking action to help student loan borrowers who are struggling to make their payments. To help student loan borrowers and their families, LSS Financial Counseling received a two-year grant from the Minnesota Office of Higher Education – funding authorized with bipartisan support by the Minnesota legislature — to provide student loan repayment counseling to Minnesota residents. The new program will provide guidance to Minnesota residents who are repaying their federal, state, and/or private student loans, but have missed a payment or two. Efforts will be aimed at reducing default rates at Minnesota schools, improving credit scores and overall financial literacy while repaying student loans. In Minnesota alone, more than 15,000 students defaulted on their
federal student loans in 2012. The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis estimates the true national default rate at 31% of all graduates. Student loan debt is a major challenge for individuals the moment they graduate, said Cate Rysavy, senior director for LSS Financial Counseling. “The repercussions often prevent borrowers from successfully pursuing their career and life ambitions,” she said. “This is especially true for students coming from low income families that were not able to contribute more generously to their student’s education, leaving the majority of the college costs to fall in the hands of the student.” Large loan payments and defaults can also have a negative impact on Minnesota’s economy, Rysavy added. Student loan payments leave less room for borrowers to invest in other expenses including renting apartments or buying homes, making car pay-

ments, paying household bills, and establishing small businesses. LSS Financial Counseling has provided Student Loan Borrower Repayment Counseling to hundreds of students through a pilot project that began in 2012. The new program will provide an objective resource to help student loan borrowers in the following ways: Explore available repayment options and potential solutions. Many borrowers are simply unaware of available repayment options that may provide a more manageable monthly payment schedule than a borrower’s current repayment plan. • Determine an individual borrower’s eligibility for these options. • Provide assistance in establishing a budget to cover monthly expenses, including federal, state, and private student loan repayment. • Attempt to contact private lenders to determine possible repayment solutions. • Help student loan borrowers in repayment avoid defaulting and suffering the related consequences. There is no charge to borrowers who are counseled through this service. LSS financial counselors are certified through the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC) and will aim to empower borrowers to take action and improve their overall finances, with a special focus on bringing student loan repayment current and preventing default. Borrowers will work with their financial counselor to develop a personalized action plan with specific steps to improve their situation. The action plan includes budget, credit, and debt advice while also addressing any underlying issues that may stand as barriers to achieving financial and repayment goals. Services are available via in-person counseling, over the phone, or via Skype. For more information, call (888) 577-2227 or visit www.ConquerYourDebt.org.

Gas Buddy December 28- Average retail gasoline prices in Minnesota have fallen 2.3 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $1.84/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 2,856 gas outlets in Minnesota. This compares with the national average that has not moved in the last week to $2.00/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com. Areas nearby Minnesota and their current gas price climate: Wisconsin- $1.92/g, up 0.5 cents per gallon from last week’s $1.91/g. Fargo- $1.69/g, down 1.4 cents per gallon from last week’s $1.70/g. Twin Cities- $1.84/g, down 1.5 cents per gallon from last week’s $1.86/g. Including the change in gas prices in Minnesota during the past week, prices yesterday were 31.9 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 12.8 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 4.2 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 28.2 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago. As the majority of the United States is still experiencing falling retail gas prices, California and

the Great Lakes states are buoying the national average, keeping it from dropping further below $2 per gallon,” said Will Speer, a Houston-based senior petroleum analyst with GasBuddy. “After a healthy 5.9 million barrel draw in domestic crude stocks, crude futures markets responded with gains in the price of West Texas Intermediate crude.” “Despite this bullish pressure, 38 of the 50 states saw a weekly decline in gas prices. However, this majority of states lowering gas prices wasn’t enough to move the national average significantly, a testament to the severity of California’s gas price hike,” said Speer. “As the refining issues impacting California aren’t expected to be resolved this week, California will continue to inflate the national gas price average into the new year.” For a complete listing of current averages and other fuel price data, visit http://media.gasbuddy. com. C ommentary A very tough job By Lee H. Hamilton You know who I feel sorry for? Today’s politicians. You’ll laugh at this, but hear me out. This is a very tough time to be a politician — whether running for office or trying to lead Lee H. while holdHamilton ing office. The women and men who’ve undertaken to represent us face circumstances that make campaigning and governing unusually challenging right now. Not that they’ve ever been easy, at least in my lifetime. Our size, diversity, and multilayered government structure; the number and complexity of the problems our political leaders face daily; and the divided politics of our time, which make settling on coherent policies especially challenging — all these combine to make being a politician in a representative democracy one of the most demanding jobs around. Several features of the current political landscape, however, give politics a sharper edge and make it far more difficult to navigate. For starters, our political discourse, from city councils to state legislatures to Congress, is less forgiving than it was a generation ago. Political opponents are no longer just people with whom we happen to disagree — they’re people who need to be shamed into silence. They can’t be trusted, they can’t be negotiated with, they’re selfserving and unpatriotic, and when they’re not incompetent, Editorial Cartoon
they’re scheming, ill-informed and ill-intentioned. This rhetoric is not just calculated demonization. The extent to which politicians today genuinely distrust the other side is something new in our politics. It makes progress on the issues of the day extremely complicated. This is exacerbated by politicians’ awareness that voters have lost confidence in our traditional political leadership and are searching hard for alternatives. You see this in the rise of candidates like Donald Trump on the right and Bernie Sanders on the left, who speak to voters who are looking for someone to express their anger and frustration. Why are Americans upset, and more willing than usual to rally to outlying candidates? I don’t think there’s any great mystery. For starters, we have a society that is deeply concerned about economic insecurity; as the Pew Research Center reported recently, the American middle class — for decades the stable anchor of economy and society — is in trouble and no longer in the majority. People are moving up, but most are not, and some are moving down. Small wonder that immigration causes so much concern. You can add to this the fear of terrorism and a deeply unsettled view of the major changes taking place in American society: the rise of big data and its attendant loss of privacy; the migration flows that whittle away at some communities while causing others to change unrecognizably from month to month; the tensions that diversity, arguments over gender, and racial conflict all produce; the fluid and everchanging patterns of religious
belief and identity that have shaken many communities loose from the institutions that once moored them; the decline of the traditional, objective media. America today is an uneasy place, and we see this reflected in voters’ frustration and pessimism. With next year’s elections still almost a year away, voters are mostly just looking around. They like candidates who express their anger and resentment, but that’s in part because they’re not measuring candidates by whether they seem fit for the presidency or Congress or the governor’s mansion. Voters are just now starting to hold candidates up to the standards of the offices they seek; as they do, the unsettled political environment in which we find ourselves will grow a bit less uncertain. But the long-term issues — the fears and uncertainty and the forces driving them — won’t have gone away. Which is why I feel great sympathy for politicians at the moment. The skills we need in our political leaders, like the ability to approach those with whom they disagree with a measure of good will and an openness to negotiation and compromise, are not held in high esteem by the voters or by the loudest voices in their own parties. It’s easy for a politician to pander to anger and frustration. It’s much harder to face a roomful of disparate opinions and forge a consensus behind a solution. Yet that is precisely what many politicians recognize our country needs. Lee Hamilton is a Distinguished Scholar, Indiana University School of Global and International Studies; and a Professor of Practice, IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs. He was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for 34 years.
Ag Extension educator’s year end review: 2015 By Michael Cruse Extension Educator for Fillmore and Houston Counties With the holiday season and the New Year here, now is the perfect time to reflect on the year that was and to look forward to the year to come. This past year has been a year of significant ups Michael Cruse and downs at the Extension office. In the spring of 2015, longtime Extension Educator Jerry Tesmer lost his battle with cancer. Though I never had the pleasure of meeting him, it is easy to see the impact he had and still has on southeast Minnesota. I cannot thank his family, interim Extension Educator Steve Rishette, the Extension office employees and the communities of Fillmore and Houston Counties enough for continuing his work and making Extension programming a priority in the region. Over the past year Extension was very active. A new generation was trained at the Farm Safety Day Camp and in the Tractor Safety Course. Workshops were coordinated with multiple agencies covering topics from nutrient management and grazing to land rent agreements. The Master Gardeners remained active in their communities, answering questions, helping design landscapes, giving out grants and putting on community programing. Bob and Jeanette Kappers and Wayne and Kris Houdek were recognized as the Farm Family of the Year in Fillmore and Houston County, respectively. Private pesticide applicator trainings were again held across the region. Many of these programs will continue next year, including Farm Safety Day Camp, the Tractor Safety Course,

and private pesticide applicator training. Please keep an eye out for information on these activities in the coming months. In addition, the Houston County Master Gardeners will be hosting their spring garden days and a new fall event next year and the Fillmore County Master Gardeners are also looking into some new, exciting partnership opportunities. In the New Year, look for me to continue being involved at 4-H events, working with local FFA chapters, staying in touch with local co-ops and visiting farms. While Minnesota Extension will never tell anyone how to run their business or organization, we feel honored to be an unbiased source of information that can help all agricultural parties make important decisions. Our information will continue to be available through typical means – newspapers, programs, the Grazing Gazette – but also look for additional sources of Extension information online in the future. Remember, my services are available to all of those involved in the agriculture community in Fillmore and Houston Counties. So feel free to call me with any questions you might have. There are a few big topics for 2016 that I am already keeping my eye on. While the 2015 growing and harvest seasons were ideal for high yields, low commodity prices have left the agriculture community in a tight position going into next year. Current market conditions do not indicate a significant, prolonged increase in prices will occur in 2016. These market conditions will require looking for numerous ways to save money on the farm and the use of strict marketing plans. Next July, DNR will be finalizing their maps designating areas to be buffered under the new Minnesota Buffer Law. The turnaround time from when these maps come out to when buffers need to be in place will be very short. So I encourage everyone to be proactive. Talk to your Soil Water Conservation Districts and consider multiple ways to fund the implementation of this law. Finally, if the warm winter weather we have been experiencing continues we may see significant effects next growing season. One of the biggest advantages to farming in the upper Midwest is that the average winter is cold enough for long enough to keep many insect populations in check. Without significantly cold conditions, insect populations may become a problem earlier next year and require greater inputs of insecticides. From everyone at the Extension office, we thank you for your support and involvement in Minnesota Extension activities this past year and look forward to working with you again this coming year. We wish you and those you care for safe travels and a happy holiday season!

C ommentary Commissioners in cahoots By Yvonne Krogstad This letter is a call for the resignation of Steve Schuldt as Houston County commissioner from District 3. He was elected to represent residents of Caledonia City and Caledonia To w n s h i p , Yvonne Krogstad but he fails to consider what is in their best interest. Following are some of his actions. Vehicle purchases for Highway Dept. - In 2014 he voted, along with Storlie and Walter, to purchase a new Yukon for the county engineer at a cost of $35,841.30 plus title and license. Incidentally this vehicle is kept at the engineer’s home for him to drive to and from work. In 2015, Schuldt again voted with Storlie and Walter to purchase a new vehicle – this time a 1-ton GMC diesel with a $38,991 price tag. (Other departments have purchased good used vehicles to save money and they drive their own vehicles to work.) Taxes – In 2013, he voted for

a 3.52% tax levy. In 2014, he voted against a 2% tax levy, but in favor of a 4% levy. This year, he voted for a 3% levy, raising our taxes once again (in spite of no Cost of Living increase). Districts 2, 3, and 5 contain the most ag land but he invariably votes with Districts 1 and 4. Why? 2015 - He voted against the wishes of the majority to ban frac sand mining in Houston County. He was in favor of building a multi-million dollar highway department facility near the Caledonia High School, contrary to what most Caledonia residents want. Only after some constituents put pressure on him, did he pursue trying to find an alternative location (even though some of his citizen committee have stated there is enough room at the current site). He is still in favor of a multi-million dollar complex. To top this off, he voted to appoint Glenn Kruse, who has been on the Planning & Zoning Commission since May 14, 1996 when he was appointed to fulfill the unexpired term of Don Kruse. This is contrary to term limits stated in the zoning ordinance (a maximum of nine years). In addition, the ordinance states that, if possible, members shall represent at least four commissioner districts. Right now, no one from Mr. Schuldt’s district is on the commission, nor have we had representation since at least 1990! Schuldt has no excuse, as he was one of the three people conducting the interviews and two applicants were from District 3. Yes, I was one of the applicants not appointed, but let me assure you, this is not in retaliation. In fact, I would have chosen the other applicant from District 3. Also note that although Commissioner Kjome sits on the P&Z Commission, he was not on the interview team, but Storlie was. What does Storlie know about zoning? As for Mr. Kruse, since he isn’t following the term limit rule, how many other provisions of the ordinance has he ignored? Something is fishy! To all county residents, if you haven’t been following the actions of the Board of Commissioners, it’s time to begin. Go to http://www.co.houston.mn.us and click on “Houston County Board Recordings” on the left side. We need commissioners who will act for the good of the majority, not for some agenda of their own. Schuldt and Storlie’s terms expire December 2016 so please consider running for a seat to replace them. We need better representation! In the meantime, we would be better off with no commissioner from District 3 on the board than have Mr. Schuldt serve out his term.
A different view of war, past and present By Sp/5 Kevin Kelleher I would like to address Mr. Gudmundson’s comments regarding the Vietnam War and his analogy to the current problem of ISIS. First, I used the rank I had when I left the mili- Kevin Kelleher tary, as does the good Colonel. Looks foolish 45 years later doesn’t it? (Get over it Stan, you’re a civilian now.) I think I can talk on this subject since the fingers that are typing this letter had the blood of my fellow soldiers and Vietnamese fighters on them (literally). I’ve been decorated multiple times for valor and never had the opportunity to go into the officer’s club. I did, however, fight in Vietnam and have researched the war extensively since. I only have one word for Stan’s opinion that we won a
war in Vietnam and then gave it away. HOGWASH! As for his opinion on Obama abandoning Iraq, I can’t think of a more ignorant suggestion. The only way to “win” there is the only way we could have “won” in Vietnam, by obliterating the entire country and most, if not all, of its people: men, women and children. I’m not sure if Stan remembers, but no one in Iraq liked or likes us. Not the Shiites or the Sunnis. After billions of dollars wasted in Iraq, and nothing to show for it, the only prudent thing to do was to seek an exit. Obama did not create that war, he inherited it. Stan’s ISIS suggestion that we put “boots on the ground”, not his of course, and that we hire General Patreaus and give him a “Big Army” and “stay out of his way” is asinine. More American blood spilt on the sands of the Middle East. Just who elected us the world’s policeman? Shouldn’t
maybe the Middle East police itself? At least a little? Maybe we should go into Yemen or Libya. No, enough American blood has been spilt with no discernible benefit. By the way, in 2012, General Petraeus resigned from his position as Director of the CIA, citing an extramarital affair. A couple of years later felony charges were recommended against Petraeus for allegedly providing classified information to his biographer, Paula Bradwell (the woman he was having the affair with), while the director of the CIA. Eventually, Petraeus pled guilty to one misdemeanor charge of mishandling classified information. Not really the kind of guy you want to have lead a “Big Army” and have dictatorial power. I was fervently hoping we learned a lesson from Vietnam. We didn’t.
New law: insurance information required to register motor vehicles
New law takes effect Jan. 1, aims to reduce the number of people driving without insurance ST. PAUL — Minnesotans who are registering, renewing license tabs or transferring ownership of motor vehicles and motorcycles will need to provide insurance information under a law change that takes effect on Jan. 1. The Minnesota Legislature changed state law last session to require insurance information for vehicle registration. Prior to the change, the law required owners to attest that the motor vehicle or motorcycle was covered by an insurance policy during the registration process; the specific policy information was not required. Information required Every owner, when applying for motor vehicle or motorcycle registration, renewing their tabs, or transferring ownership, must provide information showing that the motor vehicle or motorcycle is covered by an insurance policy. Owners will need to provide the following information under the new law: • Name of insurance company • Policy number • Expiration date of the policy Renewal notices and the new requirement The Department of Public Safety Driver and Vehicle Services division (DPS-DVS) is notifying vehicle owners of the new requirement on all 2016 renewal notices, some of which are being mailed this month. Customers will be prompted to provide the information when
applying online, in person and by mail. If a customer fails to provide the information by mail, DVS will contact the customer and require the information to be returned within 30 days. Why the change? Minnesota lawmakers changed the law at the recommendation of the Motor Vehicle Insurance Task Force to reduce the number of people driving without insurance. The 2014 Minnesota Legislature established the task force, which deliberated for seven months before submitting a report to the 2015 Minnesota Legislature on February 1. Minnesota law requires drivers to possess proof of insurance at all times and maintain insurance when a vehicle is operated or when its use is contemplated. According to the task force report, an estimated 10.8% of Minnesotans drive without insurance. One of the recommendations of the task force was to strengthen the state’s proof-of-insurance requirements and processes. About the Minnesota Department Public Safety (DPS) DPS comprises 11 divisions where 2,100 employees operate programs in the areas of law enforcement, crime victim assistance, traffic safety, alcohol and gambling, emergency communications, fire safety, pipeline safety, driver licensing, vehicle registration and emergency management. This January, during National Blood Donor Month, the American Red Cross encourages people to roll up their sleeves to give blood to help maintain a sufficient blood supply for patients. Since 1970, National Blood Donor Month has been observed in January to not only honor blood and platelet donors, but also to help increase donations during the winter months. Maintaining a sufficient blood supply for patients is difficult at this time of year because extreme winter weather and seasonal illnesses often impact donor turnout. Karla Essmiller became a blood donor in college, but the importance of giving blood hit home when several family members had medical emergencies. “It only takes once sitting in a hospital, praying that your loved one will live through the day, to know how thankful you are for every single thing done to help them,” she said. “Donating blood is a simple gift that I can make that may help up to three people live another day. That makes me feel like a hero.” Upcoming blood donation opportunites: • Houston: January 12, 2016: 1 p.m. - 7 p.m., St Mary’s Church, 202 S Sheridan St. • La Crescent: January 13, 2016: 12 p.m. - 6 p.m., American Legion, 509 N Chestnut St. • Spring Grove: January 14, 2016: 1 p.m. - 7 p.m., Fest Building, 110 N. Division. How to donate blood Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1 (800) RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to
donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. Blood donors can now save time at their next donation by using RapidPass to complete
their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, prior to arriving at the blood drive. To get started, visit redcrossblood.org/RapidPass and follow the instructions on the site.

Sue’s Muse By Sue Ommen
Gilbert, the food addict Gilbert is a food addict. I thought this comment a comical assessment, as all dogs seem to be obsessed by food. An image comes to mind of my childhood black lab, Scout, gobbling the grilled hamburgers resting on a plate on our picnic table. Gilbert gets his measured dog food two times a day, and the sound of him crunching the meat laden chow lasts about the amount of time it takes to return the measuring cup to the dog food bag. Now his meal lasts longer, as Lu has made him a pottery dish in the shape of a maze. When our own supper is served, Gilbert wanders into the dining room, affixing a potent stare in Lu’s direction, until he is commanded to go “down under” the table. At times you feel cruel relegating your trusty friend and this important tool in your life to a spot under the table, as the cooking smells hang in the air, making our mouths water over the feast to come. My husband is a world-class cook. As a food network aficionado, I can whip up a few good dishes as well. We once belonged to a gourmet club, and still make favorites from the around the world themed menus, such as chimichangas and French onion soup. Gilbert, however, is on a fairly strict diet. This is not only for his benefit, but also because he needs to be in good physical health to accomplish the job he has been trained to do. Gilbert’s veterinarian weighs him periodically to make sure he maintains a healthy weight of about 58 pounds. This is not to say Gilbert is without his fair share of treats, although they are considered into his overall food allowance. A trip to the library nets a dog biscuit, given to all pets with owners on a reading binge. The bank hands out treats as well. After alerting my husband, Gilbert is rewarded with a handful of dog food. Gilbert loves the tasty peanut butter, carrots, pears or apple bits stuffed into a Kong, a rubber toy with spaces for food. Gilbert is always fed in his dish or the Kong, except when our little grandson, Oliver, smuggles him a piece of his favorite tomato and basil wheat thins, a snack Gilbert also enjoys. Oliver likes these whole-grain crackers so much; he often walks out the door with the rest of the box to finish later.
Page 9
Last fall, Gilbert sneaked an apple off the ground occasionally, and hid it in his mouth to munch on later when he thought us too busy to notice. On a winter’s walk through the yard, his acute nose has sniffed out a frozen apple buried two feet under the snow-laden ground. Gilbert makes the rounds of the house a couple of times a day, nose to ground, to sniff out delectable morsels dropped on the floor while cooking or eating at the dining room table. Then he peruses the corner where I sit at a small table in a southern window and often
eat lunch, while listening to a book of suspense on tape. The only mystery for Gilbert is why we only leave salad and fruit and veggie droppings, as we are careful to clean up everything else, especially avocado, onion, and garlic, all on the list of not good for a dog foods. Yesterday, Gilbert pulled the cord attached to open the fridge, retrieved a small box of juice with his teeth, and brought it to Lu. The number on his pump was good at 114. However, when Lu did a blood check, his blood sugar was low at 69. We marvel at Gilbert’s training and his ability to do his job. It is an impressive sight to see Gilbert in action, a feat well worth treats fit for any food addict.

Fillmore County Sports A Red and Green Christmas By Paul Trende sports@fillmorecountyjournal.com The Houston Hurricanes boys and Rushford-Peterson’s basketball teams rolled to Christmas with wins.
Hurricane Boys Improve to 9-0
Members of the Houston boys basketball team had plenty of positive stuff to tell The Trende grandmas, Report grandpas, and other relatives at Christmas. The Hurricanes beat LeRoyOstrander 89-66 to move to Paul Trende 9-0 on the season. The ‘Canes started with a 15-3 run and led by at least nine the rest of the way. The ‘Canes performed a feat they haven’t yet this year. They got three players to twenty points. Seniors Trevor Lundberg (23 pts, 9-14 FG’s, 4-4 FT’s, 14 rebs, 7 assists) and Austin Peplinski (20 pts, 8-15 FG’s, 7 rebs, 7 assists, 8 stls) were incredibly busy. James Loken, a 6’4” senior center, added a careerhigh 20 points (9-16 FG’s, 4-5 FT’s) with 11 rebounds. Micah Schutte chipped in 15 points and 5 steals. It’s the sixth time four or more Hurricanes have reached double digits this season. Peplinski, Lundberg, and Schutte have hit double figures in all of Houston’s games. Jason Carrier’s guys continued to shoot the ball well, as they were 50% from the field (36-72) and 78% (14-18) from the free throw line. That offensive efficiency has allowed the ‘Canes to score 70-plus in all but two games. They are averaging 74.8 points per contest. Houston (8-0, 9-0) goes to Christmas break a half-game ahead of #2 in Class A Spring Grove (7-0, 7-0) in the SEC East. They are the only two unblemished SEC squads. SG’s closest SEC game was a 41-pointer to Lyle/Pacelli. The Lions having been scoring 78-plus points per game while holding foes to a miniscule 27.4. Houston hosts Spring Grove on January 14, though their Holiday Tournament schedule (at FC and at Kingsland) also poses a challenge.
Trojans a Tough Sweep of WK
Rushford-Peterson’s basketball teams each went to the Christmas break on winning streaks. They did so by performing a sweep of Wabasha-Kellogg. It wasn’t exactly an easy task. Both squads looked up at halftime deficits. The girls trekked to Wabasha and, after trailing by a couple at the break (22-20), put forth a strong 26-10 second half for the 46-32 win. Brianna Koop
had 16 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists to lead the way. Ashley Agrimson added 12 points (6-9 FG’s), 8 rebounds, and 4 steals. Savannah Skalet also had 12 points (4-16 three’s, 6 rebs, 4 assists, 3 stls). The Trojans have won three straight. They are 3-2 in the TRC, 6-3 overall. In a bigger shocker, the #5 in Class A boys trailed a competitive (5-4) Falcon squad 27-20 at the half. The last time an R-P boys team trailed a league opponent at the break was 28 games earlier, on January 28, 2014. Southland led the Trojans 43-27 at intermission, with R-P rallying for the 91-88 overtime victory. Like that night, R-P rallied. The game stayed close until the end, with the Trojans running their win streak to five courtesy of a 57-51 victory. R-P’s big three, Luke Rasmussen (15 pts, 6-6 FT’s), Noah Carlson (13 pts, 5 rebs, 5 assists, 3 stls), and Matt Culhane (13 pts, 6-10 FG’s, 10 rebs) did the biggest work. Free throws helped the Trojan cause, as they hit 13 of 17 (76.5%) to W-K’s 4 of 8 (50%). It was R-P’s best free throw effort of the season. They came in shooting at sub-45% on the season from the charity stripe. The Trojans are 6-0 in the TRC, 7-1 overall. They and Caledonia (6-0, 7-0) lead the TRC-East. St. Charles (7-0, 9-0), leading the West, is also undefeated.
Knight Girls End Skid
On a couple levels, the Kingsland girls four-game losing streak wasn’t terrible. They lost games to state ranked Class AA squads #1 PEM and #7 Dover-Eyota. Halftime scores (33-24 and 38-28) were relatively close with the final margins being 23 (PEM) and 25 (D-E). Said numbers were a massive improvements from 2014-2015. The Knights trailed by 41 (D-E), 30 (PEM), 29 (D-E), and 18 (PEM) at the halves of the four contests. Final margins were 38 (D-E), 37 (PEM), 24 (D-E), and 38 (PEM). The other two losses were in overtime to solid clubs Grand Meadow and TRC-East leader Caledonia (7-1). Surely Jake Vetter and his girls wished they could have gotten one, or both, of those. The Knights did get a win against Lewiston-Altura, breaking the four-game slide (after a 3-0 start), getting some positive momentum going ahead of Christmas. The Cardinals played zone, which slowed everything down. Kingsland slowly built a 13-4 mid-first-half lead, which was 24-10 at halftime. L-A never really threatened, as the Knights prevailed 46-35 to even their overall records at 3-3 (TRC) and 4-4 (overall). Kailey Link led the way with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Gracie Schmidt (10 pts, 10 rebs) added a double-double while Courtney Schmidt had 9 points and 5
steals. Emelia Schindeldecker (10 pts, 9 rebs) led L-A. Eighth grader Myia Ruzek (9 pts) made some flashy plays (for her age), scoring all of her buckets in the second half. Haili Cady added 8 (pts) and 7 (rebs). The teams combined to go 3-23 from distance. Twenty first half, and 34 total turnovers, killed the Cardinals. Kingsland is already twothirds of the way to last year’s win total (six). Their next four games, Mabel-Canton, Houston, Rushford-Peterson, and Fillmore Central, are big section matchups against fellow FCJ covered squads.

GMLOKS wrestling won 9 of the first 11 matches to build a 47-12 lead on Wabasha-Kellogg. The Bulldogs prevailed 47-26 with Jackson Hale (106), Daniel Smith (113), Noah Sayles (138), and Christopher Bain (182) winning by fall, Brenn Olson (145) and Parker Hale (160) by tech fall. The Bulldogs are 2-1. Olson (#10 at 132), Hale (#3 at 152), and Bain (#8 at 182) are ranked in state in Class AA. LARP got six forfeit victories to down a small La Crescent bunch 61-9. Noah Herber (145), Sam Puetz (160), and Cody Rain (195) notched pins. LARP is now 3-3. Chatfield has the county’s only #1 ranked state wrestler, as sophomore Jake Mandt is the new top guy at 138-pounds. He was ranked #2 behind D-E’s Ryan Keach in the December 11 ranking. Keach is now #2. In the cult favorite movie, Office Space (starting Ron Livingston and Jennifer Aniston), and adage, “a case of the Mondays” was used to describe a not-so-pleasant fellow-employee the first day of the work week. Monday, December 21, was not-so-pleasant for all but one Fillmore County Journal covered basketball team. The county teams went a collective 1-8. Squads went 5 and 11 total on the shortened, two-day, preChristmas week. Mabel-Canton’s girls lost two, but to quality clubs. They fell to 50-41 to St. Charles (6-2) and 56-35 to #3 in Class A Lyle/Pacelli (7-0). The game with the defending section champ Athletics was 29-22 at halftime. M-C trailed by 33 and 20 at halftime to L/P a year ago. The Cougar are 4-2 in the SEC, 5-3 overall. Lanesboro lost a tight one to LeRoy-Ostrander, with Haley Polin (19 pts) matching a career-high. Houston’s girls were idle. They are 2-4, 2-7.

Troy Christianson Minnesota State Patrol Question: I encountered a funeral procession along a twolane highway (no roads entering this section of highway) and the lead funeral home vehicle had a light bar Troy H. on the dash Christianson flashing an alternating red and blue light. Everyone on the highway going opposite the procession pulled over to the shoulder, thinking it was a police officer. Is this legal for the funeral home to do and what is the protocol for vehicles encountering this?
