How the Army changed her life
Harmony native Kristen (Whalen) Rhodes served in the Army and Army Reserve from 2000 - 2008, serving in Germany, Iraq, and Arizona. At the age of 17, a quiet and shy farm girl named Kristen Whalen knew she wanted to join the “Army of One” -- the Army’s slogan from 2001 to 2006. Her parents, John and Ellen Whalen, of rural Harmony, didn’t know she was interested in entering the military until she sprung it on them at that time. Kristen’s mother told her that she should wait a couple weeks before enlisting, because she wanted to make sure that this was something she really wanted to do. That two weeks passed, and Kristen enlisted in the Army with delayed entry until she graduated from Fillmore Central High School in 2001. She originally checked with the Navy recruiting office about pursuing a position as a medic, and they said they couldn’t guarantee her request. So, she checked with the Army recruiting office in Rochester, and she was able to sign up for a medic position upon her parent’s signatures of approval. Kristen knew she wanted to pursue a career in the medical field, but she wasn’t sure exactly where she might find her calling. The Army helped her find her way. Training In 2001, Kristen went through basic training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C., which is the only co-ed training camp in the United States. During her nine
weeks of training, she said it was like a tough summer camp. And, looking back on it now, she loved the obstacle courses. She also became a really good runner as a result of the training. When asked about training for the female soldiers compared to their male counterparts, she said that actually female drill sergeants were scarier than the men. “They were just harder on the women.” While there wasn’t anyone else from Minnesota in her barracks, Kristen became good friends with her “battle buddy” -- a.k.a. bunk mate -- from Utah. During her basic training, the 9/11 attack on the Twin Towers took place. Kristen shared, “We were qualifying for weapons that day, and didn’t know anything about what had happened. We saw multiple fighter jets flying by, and military police were driving around. It wasn’t normal.” After finishing their weapons qualifications, they found out the entire base went into lockdown. As vehicles entered the base, they were searched thoroughly. For a couple days, the base was on high alert. And, everyone in basic training was talking about the possibility of deployment. After finishing basic training, Kristen was sent to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Tex., to complete medic training. Upon completion of medic training, she was a certified EMT ready for deployment. Deployment Following her specialized training in Texas, she was sent
to Ray Barracks in Friedberg, Germany. “This was the Army home to Elvis Presley,” added Kristen. While serving at Ray Barracks, she spent more time in the motor pool changing the tracks on their M577 Armored Personnel Carrier than working as a medic. There were too many medics and not enough positions available for Kristen to garner the medical experience. And, then in May 2003, she was deployed to serve in Iraq. This is where she saw things that she describes today as surreal. She remembered wounded soldiers coming in from the battlefield, and all of the medics wanted to tend to the wound. But, based on rank, every medic was given a responsibility. She was always told to work on the respiratory needs of the wounded. And, as she took on this role often, she started to thinking about the importance of the respiratory system. She recalled a soldier coming in with a bullet wound right through one of his eyes. Unfortunately, he didn’t survive. As she was working on his respiratory needs, that’s the moment she realized she wanted to pursue a career in respiratory therapy after she left the military. While in Iraq, she was one of three female medics that would travel with up to 200 male soldiers on missions to search for roadside bombs. “I felt like I had 200 big brothers,” shared Kristen, when talking about her time in Iraq. “I always felt safe, because the guys were looking out for us.”
When asked if there was an event that occurred that still sticks with her to this day, she recalled when a six-year-old girl was shot and killed in crossfire with the enemy. “For some reason, an Iraqi father panicked and loaded his family into their vehicle and drove into the line of fire.” While Kristen was used to tending to wounded soldiers, the medics weren’t used to treating an innocent child. Kristen left Iraq in July 2004, and was sent to Yuma Proving Ground -- one of the largest military installations in the world -- in Yuma, Ariz. As a squadron leader, that’s where she met her future husband. But, she was his superior, and they didn’t find a connection at that time. She would finish out her active duty in Yuma until she was discharged in August 2005. But, that wouldn’t necessarily be the end of her military career. Life after Active Duty Kristen went onto college at RCTC, taking prerequisites for the respiratory program. And, while attending college, she started experiencing depression and other symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). She was having a hard time leaving the Army, and relating to those who had not gone through similar experiences. So, a friend of hers convinced her to enlist in the Army Reserve. After six months of her absence from the Army, she was back in the uniform. From 2006 to 2008, she served as a member of the Forward Surgical Battalion 945
Photo submitted out of Fort Snelling. Kristen finished her degree of Bachelors of Applied Science in Respiratory Care via the University of Minnesota and Mayo School of Health Sciences in 2009. Throughout the years, Kristen has stayed in touch with her friends from the Army. She still connects with her basic training battle buddy from Utah. And, one day in late 2009, she reconnected on Facebook with Adam Rhodes -- her future husband she met while serving at Yuma Proving Ground. Kristen commented on a picture of Adam’s tatoo on his Facebook page, and then they started connecting on a regular basis. That connection turned into a dating status in early 2010. After maintaining a long distance relationship, eventually they were ready to take this relationship to the next level. But, they also needed to figure out where they were going to live. Adam’s family was in Valley Center, Calif., and Kristen’s family resided in the Harmony area. While they were originally thinking of moving to California, after Adam came to visit Kristen’s family in Harmony, he decided that Minnesota was a better place to raise a family. They were married on March 16, 2013, and now live on their hobby farm in rural Mantorville, Minn. Unit, and Adam works as a mechanic for Total Tire & Gear in Zumbrota, Minn. As a result of her military career, Kristen found her career path in the medical field. And, along the way, she found her husband, Adam Rhodes. Today, they have a 22-month-old daughter named Devin, and they have another baby due in March of 2016. When asked what she would suggest for young people today who may be considering a career in the military, she shared “My husband and I have talked about how every graduating high school student should have to serve in the military. It teaches them discipline and work ethic”. For Kristen, she became more confident and self-assured, along with learning how to remain calm and think in a stressful environment. When looking back on her military career, she is glad she did everything she did. Kristen concluded, “I have a difficult time identifying myself as a veteran, because while growing up, veterans were always older guys, my grandpa’s age. Not a 21-year-old girl!”

Every soldier has a story By Jason Sethre I wanted to take a moment to give everyone an update on the status of Boots & Badges: Honoring Fillmore County Veterans. I recall when we started this project in November of 2014, I was concerned about how much of a response we would receive. Would we receive enough photos to make this book a successful representation of the Veterans of Fillmore County? Well, I’m not worried anymore. As a matter of fact, we received far greater participation in this book than we could have ever imagined. As recognized in this special Veterans Day section, we have over 3,300 Veterans that will be honored in Boots & Badges: Honoring Fillmore County Veterans. And, as you flip through the pages of this tribute book, you’ll see photos of these Veterans. As I was writing this status update on the book, I checked our hard drive server space dedicated to this project and discovered we have 8,340 files associated with this project. And, the bulk of that space is dedicated to photos totaling 7,662 files. That’s how massive this project has become since its inception in
early 2015. What makes this project even more challenging is that we are only printing this book one time. So, everything has to be done right the first time, because there is no second time. This project is too important to myself and our staff to rush through it. Every soldier has a story. And every photo of every soldier is important. We need to make sure our information is accurate, and every name is spelled correctly. Each of us involved in this project have become emotionally connected with these Veterans, and we are very much looking forward to sharing these stories with all of those who have entrusted us with this responsibility. A real history lesson As we have been diligently working on this book, days, nights, and weekends -- all while still chiseling away at the weekly newspaper -- we have learned more about the sacrifices of generations of men and women from this area. There are many forgotten war heroes among us. They don’t talk about their military experiences, but they have seen and experienced some things that
A worthy goal: A Veterans home in Preston By Karen Reisner Initial efforts to make a Veterans Assisted Living Residence located in Preston a reality have begun. Members of the Minnesota Senate Capital Investment Committee toured southeast Minn. recently. The committee heard presentations on possible projects for a bonding bill that is expected to be considered in 2016. On October 28, the committee endured some messy wet weather to hear a formal presentation on a potential Veterans Home site in Preston. The proposed 15 acre site is located near the water tower, adjacent to the Preston Industrial Park and the Golf and Country Club. It is currently a corn field owned by Robert Doherty. The city has an option on the acreage. A local Veterans Home committee is in the process of being organized and is expected to meet monthly. They will hold open meetings with the next meeting scheduled for December 8, 4 p.m. Community involvement and support is encouraged. Economic development director Cathy Enerson explained that at this point a Preston Veterans Home is just a state proposal. Part of the first phase of the proposal is the cost of planning. The committee’s first objective is to prepare for a possible hearing with legislators as early as March 2016 to seek planning

Minnesota Housing can assist in determining the number of beds and assessing the current need. Economic impact data will help determine the number of employees that will be needed, dependent on the number of beds. An engineering firm is needed to get proposals to determine cost. The committee will reach out to nearby counties asking for their support. Counties that could be served include Fillmore, Houston, Mower, Olmsted, Winona, Dodge, Wabasha, and Freeborn. Enerson commented, “It will take a village.”
Local committee members are considering a trip to visit the Luverne facility. They hope to speak with its director and also local officials to assess economic impact. Rep. Greg Davids introduced a bill for a Fillmore County Veterans Home last session, which was referred to the State Government Finance committee. A companion bill introduced by Senator Jeremy Miller was referred to the Capital Investment committee. Why Preston? Preston is the Fillmore County seat, home of county VA services, and home of a State Veterans Cemetery. There is no Veterans Home in southeast Minnesota. The nearest Veterans

most of us may never fathom. While working on the WWII section of the book, I can’t believe how many soldiers were killed in action and how many prisoners of war we had from this area. And, as I read many stories about young men who died in combat, and I look at many familiar local last names, I can’t help but think of how there are many broken branches in these family trees. There were no children or grandchildren born from that branch of the family tree. And, as I read the stories provided to us by content contributors, I continue to realize how fortunate we are today. Especially, when you look at those who served in WWII. Things were tight overseas and at home. We have a photo of a ration book in Boots & Badges: Honoring Fillmore County Veterans. I had to research it a bit, because I had never seen a real one before. We are so far removed from these types of things, they can easily get lost in the pages of our history books. During WWII, ration books were issued and the stamps included in these books were good for meat, sugar, cooking oils, and canned goods. And, when you ran out of those stamps for the month, you couldn’t get anymore of that particular item at the grocery store. In today’s world, we have
no point of comparison. A frustrating day for someone today is when their cell phone battery goes dead. We live in a world of abundance; not rations. The content of Boots & Badges: Honoring Fillmore County Veterans will not only be a tribute to those who have served in our region, but it will also provide a localized history lesson. I remember studying wars in history class in grade school. Working on this book gives me a greater understanding and appreciation for those who have served, the sacrifices they have made, and the freedoms they have secured for all of us. On this Veterans Day, I think we need to take a step back and realize how fortunate we are to live in the United State of America. We live in a great nation because we have men and women willing to fight for our freedoms stateside and abroad. And, for those of you who are wondering when Boots & Badges: Honoring Fillmore County Veterans will become available, I can tell you that this massive project has become a moving target. We had hoped to be done by now, but I am estimating that we will have it ready in early December -- just in time for Christmas. We will keep you posted. Thank you for your patience and support of this very important project. Our Veterans deserve to be honored for their service this day and every day.
Home is in Hastings, which is about 100 miles from Preston. This qualifies Preston as a possible site since it is more than 70 miles away from another Veterans Home. There currently are five Veterans Homes in Minnesota, located in Fergus Falls, Hastings, Luverne, Minneapolis, and Silver Bay. Preston can serve 24,769 Veterans over age 65 based on a 2014 Veterans population census, living within 70 miles of Preston. This figure does not include spouses, which when added in could increase this number significantly. Preston is about 35 minutes from Rochesters, community based VA outreach clinic. Preston City Administrator Joe Hoffman at the committee meeting said there is a need for the facility, referring to the proposed location as a beautiful site. Community participation in the effort is important. Veterans Serviceman’s Club serves both the Legion and the VFW organizations. There will be opportunities for Veterans to volunteer at burials and memorial ceremonies at the State Veterans Cemetery. The need is there. One thousand Minn. Veterans are on a waiting list for one of the 860 Veterans existing care beds. About a quarter of the state’s Veterans are 75 years of age or older and that number is projected to increase by 9% over the next 20 years.

All retail locations will be listed in an advertisement in the Fillmore County Journal on a regular basis once the book becomes available for resale.
