Fillmore Central students immerse themselves in Spanish culture By Jade Sexton jsexton@fillmorecountyjournal.com
Research has shown that learning a second language at a young age has tremendous benefits, and that even very young children have a tremendous capacity for learning languages. Learning a second language can affect intellectual growth, enhance mental development, and improve understanding of your native language, as well as other cultures. Many people take foreign language classes in school, but immersing yourself in the language, being around people who speak only that language, only enhances the learning experience. With this understanding, many places offer language immersion camps, where students can gather and be surrounded by

According to Wolfgram, the counselors are fluent in Spanish, but the camp is good for students in all levels. “I’m bringing some level one students that are eager, and who want to learn and embrace the culture,” said Wolfgram. Students attended formal and informal teaching sessions during the weekend. The students learned about the food, culture, dance, games, history, and geography of Spain. Students also chose the activities to participate in, such as sports or food. Wolfgram said there was a formal banquet and dance on Saturday night with authentic Spanish food and music. “It’s a lot of fun,” he said. See SPANISH Page 16

C ommentary Remembering the Great Depression
By Stan Gudmundson If one reads histories written by generic historians about the Great Depression of the ‘30s chances are you won’t learn much, if anything, of value. Books about the Depression written by credible economic historians or economists like Hayek, Friedman, Sowell, Hazlitt, Folsom, Higgs, Col. Stan Shlaes, and Gudmundson many others however, are USAF (Ret) another story. The cause of the Great Depression is exactly the same as the cause of our current economic calamity. It was created by politicians and government. The Great Depression was a bipartisan effort for which both Hoover and Roosevelt can take credit. Moreover the notion that Roosevelt was a great president is total fiction. Conventional wisdom has it that the stock market crash in 1929 caused the Great Depression and that it also reflected the failure of capitalism. One month after the crash unemployment rose to five percent, and by December it reached nine percent. From then through June, unemployment dropped back to 6.3 percent and the market had recovered nearly half of its value. But if the crash caused the depression, how is it that the market began to recover and why was unemployment going down? From these statistics, one would have to conclude that maybe something other than the crash caused it. And it was something else. It was government to the “rescue.” A letter signed by over a thousand economists to Hoover requested that he not sign the Smoot-Hawley Act passed by a Democrat-controlled Congress. He signed it anyway. Smoot-Hawley placed tariffs
on 3,218 imported items and, of these, sharply raised tariffs on 887. A trade war ensued. As author Burton Folsom points out, US exports “dropped (64 percent)... (between) 1929 (and) 1932.” By February 1932, unemployment had risen to over 20 percent, and it stayed there until December 1934. It dropped to 19.3 percent in January of 1935 but stayed very high until the beginning of WWII. “American car sales plummeted (66 percent) from over 5.3 million in 1929 to 1.8 million in 1932...by 1932 the quantity of money in the US had fallen by about one-third” and, unlike 20th century historical trends, life expectancy actually declined. During WWI the US had lent about $10 billion to European nations. After the passage of Smoot-Hawley, Europeans essentially stopped payment on those loans. There were also ineffective Federal Reserve policies. Chairman of the Fed, Bernake believes that the Fed, by itself, caused the Depression. Roosevelt campaigned against Hoover by promising a “free-market approach to economic growth” (by) “cut(ting) federal spending”, “reduc(ing) taxes and lower(ing) the Smoot-Hawley tariff.” But when he was elected he didn’t keep any of his promises and turned a disaster into a catastrophe. There are countless examples of government “fixes” the Roosevelt administration used, but none of them worked. Obviously had they been effective, the depression would have ended. But it didn’t. As a matter of fact, in 1939 unemployment rose again to over 20 percent. Roosevelt’s “effort to promote industrial recovery” is particularly problematic and revealing. In 1933, the National Industrial Recovery Act was passed. Better known as the NRA, “it allowed American industrialists to collaborate to set the prices of their products, and even wages and hours that went
into making them. Leaders in all industries, from steel and coal to shoulder pads and dog food, were invited to...write ‘codes of fair competition’ that would be binding on all producers in their industry...a businessman would be bound by the terms of the code and subject to fine or jail term if he violated the code...America’s...free market system...was overthrown.” The NRA created a New Deal central planners heaven. But “even economist John Maynard Keynes, who often advocated massive government intervention, disagreed with...the NRA (venture. It) ‘probably impedes recover,’ Keynes wrote in the New York Times, and ‘has been put across too hastily.’” There were “more than 540 codes...written into law (which) had the strong tendency to raise prices, raise wages, reduce working hours, and remove competition-as well as innovation of industrial products.” The NRA, along with the Agriculture Adjustment Act, did nothing but exacerbate economic problems. Both were declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. Infuriating Roosevelt, that led to his initiative to pack the court with more judges of his liking. As for having some sort of master plan Roosevelt said, “We seldom know, six weeks in advance, what we are going to do.” By March 1939, a Gallup poll, “revealed that 67 percent of Americans believed that the Roosevelt administration’s attitude toward business was delaying recovery.” Confirming that opinion, his secretary of the treasury said, Roosevelt, “did not seem to think that aiding business, or ‘paying usury’, as he worded it, was

worth it even if it helped recovery.” There is so, so much more to tell about the Roosevelt administration’s ceaseless and ineffective meddling through the ‘30s in the economy and our way of life. The misguided efforts of the “New Dealers” is best summed up by Roosevelt’s secretary of the treasury Morgenthau. By the way, “key public policy decisions had to go through Morgenthau to get a hearing.” You might say he was a heavy hitter. In 1939, when unemployment had again reached over 20 percent, he said the following to “his fellow Democrats on the Housed Ways and Means Committee”: “We have tried spending money. We are spending more than we have ever spent before and it does not work...We have never made
good on our promises...after eight years of this Administration we have just as much unemployment as when we started...And an enormous debt to boot! We are just sitting here and fiddling and I am just wearing myself out and getting sick. Because why? I can’t see any daylight.” By the way, “Roosevelt spent more in the first five years of his presidency than all thirty-one presidents before him.” Why do we have to relearn this lesson over and over again? To paraphrase Ronald Reagan, government is not the solution, it is the problem. Many of the quotes above are from a book by Burton Folsom titled “New Deal or Raw Deal.”

Secretary of State Mark Ritchie Announces Precinct Caucus Finder Available Online
Posted Date: 1/18/2012 St. Paul, Minn. – Jan.18, 2012 – Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie announced today voters can now access the Caucus Finder, an easy-to-use, online service to assist Minnesotans in locating the precinct caucus of their choice in their neighborhood on Tuesday, February 7, 2012. “The Caucus Finder is an important service that helps citizens take ownership of our democracy,” said Secretary Mark Ritchie. “Minnesotans can access the 2012 Caucus Finder at http://caucusfinder.sos.state.mn.us to find the precinct caucus times and locations provided by the political parties. Precinct caucus meetings are a great place for citizens to engage in Minnesota’s political process at the ‘grassroots’ level by participating in discussions that impact a wide range of public policy and political issues with their neighbors. ” The caucuses are open to the public. During these meetings political parties will begin the process of selecting candidates for the 2012 election. Caucus attendees are encouraged to offer policy ideas (resolutions) that may go on to become party policy positions. Caucus attendees interested in voting, offering resolutions or serving as a delegate at a precinct caucus must be eligible to vote in the 2012 general election, live in the precinct and be in general agreement with the principles of the political party. The Caucus Finder offers caucus information provided by four of Minnesota’s political parties - Democratic-Farmer Labor, Green, Independence, and Republican. For additional information about the upcoming caucuses and contact information for each of Minnesota’s political parties visit www.sos.state.mn.us/index.aspx?page=886 to access a caucus brochure developed by this office.

C ommentary Letter about frac mining... To the Editor, In a recent commentary, Kent Syverson called moratoriums “thinly veiled attempts to block sand mining.” On the contrary, moratoriums allow officials to do the job we elected them to do: Protect the public interest. Bravo to courageous officials who study issues before acting! Moratoriums allow time to examine: • What guarantees mining companies “contribute to road upkeep?” • Syverson identified two critical water issues: water depletion and water contamination. What guarantees they pay for monitoring usage and quality of water and for solving water problems? Do short term rewards outweigh long term consequences? Can the land be returned to agricultural use? Who pays for reclamation? Syverson’s article was misleading in the following areas:
• He implied silicosis is an occupational disease only affecting workers at the workplace. The American Lung Association cautions: “Always remember that when you wear dusty clothing in your car, at home, or anywhere outside of your worksite, you may be exposing your family to potentially deadly silica!” • A common practice among mining companies is to fill jobs with their own people. Don’t count on a boost in local employment. • He neglected to mention that surrounding properties’ values could decline by up to 30 percent. What’s the rush? It seems clear outside interests want to get in quick and get sand out cheap before we have a chance to fully understand the real costs. Rest assured someone will pay. Will it be local taxpayers? As one official stated, “The sand will still be there.” Kelley Stanage Houston, MN

Pet of the Week
Charo
Chihuahua
Charo has become such a delightful young girl! The changes this dog has gone through in the time she’s lived with us is nothing short of amazing! She came to us a scared, snippy, unsocialized pup and she has blossomed into a funny, excitable, calm pup! She’s fully house-trained and is going a step further and starting to sit by the door on her own when she’s gotta go. She plays with toys just a little bit though that’s a work in progress. She gets along perfectly with the resident dog and absolutely loves the resident 8 yr old girl too! Charo has not been around cats at all, but I imagine she’d be fine with one.

Fillmore County Sports “Nick T...” for 1,000
By Paul Trende If an announcer were to call a basketball game in which RushfordPeterson Trojan Nick Thompson played, he’d likely use the phrase ‘Nick T…for three!’ It rhymes. It offers clarity (Nick’s younger brother Seth is a teammate so saying ‘Thompson for three’ could be confusing). It’s catchy. One could almost hear a Sportscenter anchor’s grandiose dictation. It’s something that happens very frequently at Trojan games. The wiry 6’4” senior forward is deftly capable of splashing down threes, of scoring points. On January 26, in a road game against LewistonAltura, Thompson went over the 1,000 for his career. He’s the 4th R-P player to do so, joining Aaron Hungerholt, Tyler Drinkall, and Jamie Carrier (R-P’s all-time scoring leader with 1,435 points). He’s at least the 13th Rushford, Peterson, or R-P player to do so (a list headed by Peterson’s Terry Highum and his 1,693 points). It’s the second time this season Nick has victimized the Cardinals. In their first meeting, he hit for a career high and school record 43 (including tying a career best, unofficially, with 7 threes). It would’ve been poetic if Nick broke the 1,000-point threshold from distance, but he didn’t. He did it at the free throw line. It did take him three attempts (at 999 points, he missed a pair of FT’s, but hit two
moments later). No matter how he achieved the feat, Nick is a shooter, not exclusively, but it’s his calling card. In the words of his coach Tom Vix, ‘(he’s) probably the best pure shooter I have ever coached. Nick is a great example of what hard work will do for you. His many hours of practicing have paid off.’ That’s saying something given Vix’s coaching reputation. The numbers most certainly confirm Nick’s dead-aim too. Through 17 games this season, he’s shooting a gaudy 48.8 percent from 3-point range (60-123). That’s almost not comprehendible. That’s 3.5 makes per game. He’s averaging 22.8 points per contest. Both stats are sizeable improvements on a great All-Conference junior year (83-236, 35 percent from deep, 485 points, not quite 17/game). The sleek left-hander and his quick release are definitely not a dream to play against. Behind Thompson and the Vix’s, PG Trent and Head Coach Tom, R-P is fighting with PEM, Kingsland, St. Charles, and Southland for positioning atop of the 3-Rivers. When Section 1A tournament time comes, the Trojans will be legitimately fighting for a trip to state. Thompson’s been there. As a sophomore, he played a part (129 points, 5/game, 25-59 from deep) in ‘09-‘10’s 4th place squad. If ‘11-12’s squad makes it, it’s almost a guarantee; thousand-plus-point scorer,
three-point ace, Nick Thompson, will be a big reason why. Curse Them Rims! A Fillmore Central boy’s basketball fan went to extreme measures to end his/her team’s six-game slide (they have won in 2012, an error from last week’s sports). They snuck into Chatfield’s gym early Tuesday morning and hexed the rims. The specifics; the irons were to be unkind to shots taken by players in maroon and white jerseys. It worked. The Gopher’s shooting that evening was dreadful; FT’s 4-18, FG’s 13-60, 3’s 1-22! Leading scorer on the season, Nate Skare, had two. Mitch Irish was the only Gopher to have performed a counter-ritual that (partially) lifted the force field above the hoops. He was high-man for Chatfield with 9 points (8 rebounds). The rest of the Gopher starters combined for 8. FC accepted the non-stellar but astonishing showing, with open arms. Zach Olstad led the way with 12 points, but Tyler Eickhoff (9 & 9 rebounds), Isaac Sveen (8 & 9 rebounds), and Andy Todd (8) all put the biscuit in the basket. The Falcons ended their losing streak, avenged an earlier loss to the Gophers, 55-31. Turn-About Is Fair Play Part 1 After watching LeRoy-Ostrander dismantle their girls in the front half of a double-header, the MabelCanton guys took the floor seeking redemption. They jumped on the their one-win Cardinal adversaries
20-6. Leading scorer Steve Smith then sat with foul trouble. L-O capitalized. They cut M-C’s lead to 27-23. But before the half was over, Smith was back. Non-coincidentally, the Coug’s propelled ahead on the scoreboard (39-28 at halftime). Early in the 2nd, Smith picked up foul #4, giving L-O a chance to again make a run. But the rest of the Cougars picked up the slack, headed by senior PG Jacoby Bigalk. By the time Smith re-entered late, to notch another double double and take a rare (and awesome) standing charge (the Card offender bounced off like a rubber ball), the Cougars had only expanded their lead. With Smith getting 21 points and 10 rebounds, Bigalk scoring 18 and grabbing 8, Adam Fravel chipping in 10, and the team making 5 of 10 from deep, M-C toppled L-O 68-53. The boys improved to 6-3, 7-7. They’re in 4th in the SEC behind SG (10-0, 13-2), Houston (9-1, 13-3), and Lanesboro (7-2, 8-6). Of note, Smith became M-C’s 4th all-time leading scorer, passing Heath Olson (1119 points). Turn-About Is Fair Play Part 2 Kingsland’s boys found themselves in the same spot as M-C’s. They took the floor to face WinonaCotter moments after watching their girls lose. They too got redemption, though it wasn’t without a tussle. Cotter came out on fire. The Ramblers nailed 6 of 8 three’s in the 1st
WANTED: We know that sometimes life deals us a bum rap, situations can occur that we have little or no control over financially. In today’s ever-changing economic cycle, job challenges arise that may have caused financial hardships or unexpected medical emergencies may have dealt an unfair blow. As much as we try, sometimes it is very difficult to rebound from unexpected or out-of-control finances without help or understanding from some outside source. We want that opportunity to help. Re-establishing credit can be as important as buying a car. We have lenders working right now to finalize loans. Let’s see how this program works: From the start, our customers are under no obligation to enter this program, they can say no at any time. This program is designed to re-establish their credit in as short a period of time as possible. Other dealerships offer “Buy Here Pay Here” operations. Generally, you buy a vehicle they want to get rid of, and no credit is established since they do not report to the credit bureau (unless payments are not made) and there are no warranties or guarantees. If credit is established, it’s only with them so people are trapped inside their spiral of driving less than desirable vehicles and never improving
stanza, 13 of 21 total FG’s. The Knights weren’t exactly cold. They were 12 of 24 on FG’s. Cotter’s hothands gave them a 36-29 midway lead. In the 2nd, the teams switched ends of the court, Kingsland got to shoot the ball into a bigger basket, and after spotting W-C the first two points, the Knights went on a 23-2 run. Tanner Lange was a jet going to the basket (22 points), a surgeon with his passes (9 assists). Spencer Klevan was dominant in and around the paint (19 points), a beast on the boards (13). Devin Pokorney (14) and Sam Eberle (11) were also in double figures. Cotter’s Gus Cochrane led all scorers with 25, but Kingsland found the winners circle 69-62. They boosted their record to 11-5 overall (10-2 in 3-Rivers). They’re alone in 2nd place behind PEM (11-1, 13-5). R-P (104, 13-4), St. Charles (8-5, 12-5), and Southland (8-6, 11-6) round out the top five. BBB 1-24 • #10 in A R-P 53, St. Charles 66 (R-P: N. Thompson 21 pts & 7 rebs; T. Vix 15 pts & 7 assists. grams and positions. “This is our normal procedure, right?” Board member Peggy Merkel asked. “We have done this every year.” “This is our normal procedure that every school does this time of year,” Superintendent McDonald said. “Without this resolution, we could not make any future reductions in staff or programs. It is not that we have any planned, but it just allows us the flexibility to make those decisions.” The resolution directs the Superintendent of Schools and administration to consider the discontinuance of programs of positions to effectuate economies in the school district and reduce expenditures and, as a result of reduction in enrollment, make recommendations to the school board for the discontinuance or curtailment of programs and positions. The board will meet on February 6 at 4 p.m. in the Kingsland Café to continue strategic planning for the district. The next school board meeting will be Monday, February 15 at 7 p.m. in the district conference room.
