Whether you consider yourself a horse lover, a cowboy, or an equestrian, there is a newly opened business in Wykoff, Minn. that has people stopping in to find decorative and useful products. And if you are not the cowboy type, there are still many unique items to choose from. The Painted Pony opened in March of 2014 at 106 Gold Street in Wykoff with a wide variety of useful and decorative items which are taken in on consignment. Owner Sherrie Schmidt likes horses and knows a lot of people who like horses, so when she wanted to open a business, a western themed store was what she naturally was drawn to. Schmidt says she has “always lived on a farm”, so after moving into town, being at The Painted Pony gives her the feel of the farm while living in town. The name of her business came together after trying to think of a name herself and asking friends and family for suggestions. A woman she works with suggested the name The Painted Pony and Schmidt decided that would be the name she would use. Different types of clothing can be found in the store including shirts, vests, and jackets at reasonable prices with sizes ranging from child to adult. Much of the apparel is versatile and not necessarily western but could be pieced with western outfits. There are home decor pieces such as homemade signs which include sayings such as “cowgirl tough” and other craft items. Gift items for the horse

With another packed house, Wednesday, September 24, the Peterson council attempted to iron out project details, cost, and funding concerns regarding the 2015 County State Aid Highway 25 reconstruction. Discussion has been contentious at times, as the roughly 200-person community tries to weigh the impact of the county-mandated project. The scope of the project has been flexible and reduced in some measures, but the city council has opted to keep many of the project options in the discussion to get a better balance on what’s needed and what’s simply advantageous because of the timing.

Currently, the project’s plans include a total reconstruction of County 25 Mill Street, from River Street to Church Street, and along the south portion of Church Street. Reconstruction includes roadway, curb, gutter, catch basin, and sidewalks. Church Street will remain a “rural section,” utilizing ditches for drainage, instead of curb, gutter, and catch basin. A cooperative agreement is in place with the county for a 50 percent cost share of the curb, gutter, and sidewalks. Additionally, the 106-year old water main under the roadway is scheduled for See PETERSON Page 25 

Lanesboro makes changes to school bus routes By Jade Sexton jade@fillmorecountyjournal.com

Sherrie Schmidt, owner of The Painted Pony in Wykoff, Minn. strives to offer unique quality items in her business which opened in March of 2014. Photo by Barb Jeffers enthusiast in your family, such as books, bookends, and wall hangings can be found at The Painted Pony. Necklaces, bracelets, and other jewelry are available, which makes it easy to put together and entire outfit, complete with accessories in one stop. One of those accessories could be any of the belts in the store, some of which have rhinestones.

Horse tack is in no short supply at The Painted Pony with saddles, spurs, halters, and more. Of course, there are many types of cowboy hats and cowboy boots to choose from, as well, which are very popular according to Schmidt. People who have shopped at See PAINTED PONY Page 2 

Two bus stops in town will be added to the Lanesboro School bus routes starting in October. The Lanesboro School busing policy states the school buses will only pick up students that live at least one mile from the school. At the August school board meeting, Lori Anderson asked about adding two extra stops in town so students who live on the edges of town won’t have as far to walk. The students living in those areas could walk to the stops instead of all the way to school. Chairman Dave Ruen believed there would be many kids that would benefit from two bus stops in town. that need to be considered, such as whether or not there is room on the bus. The drop-off and pick-up will not be less than half a mile from school, and the stops can only be on current routes. The stops will be posted on the school web site. Superintendent Jeff Boggs said they would like to avoid picking up students too early in the morning. Also, if there is no room on the bus, other arrangements will have to be made. After the new routes are started, they will have a better idea of what is needed.
