Ag drives Preston growth with $4.1 million investment

Five years in the making, Preston Dairy and Farm has climbed the mountain atop a plan strategically executed in the name of growth. Terry Rindels, Manager of Preston Dairy and Farm, shared the details of how this ag-driven cooperative arrived at the former Gehling Auction Co. location. Back in 2010, the Preston Dairy and Farm Board of Directors asked Terry what he had in mind regarding a five year plan. After operating at the Fillmore Street location, near downtown Preston, for more than 45 years,

Rindels suggested to the board that they had outgrown their space and needed to build a new facility. While it may have seemed like a risky consideration, the growth of Preston Dairy and Farm warranted a need for expansion. As Rindels said, “We have experienced considerable growth,” further adding, “we outgrew where we were.” At the Fillmore Street location, they had a lack of storage and they couldn’t get the product out the door fast enough. It was a matter of logistics. With over 250 cooperative patrons spanning a 30 mile radius in every direction, this coopCome Enjoy

erative has grown in volume and customer-base. Rindels, who has been with Preston Dairy and Farm for over 23 years, has managed the cooperative for the past 10 years. While he’s a modest man, under his leadership, the organization has experienced phenomenal growth to the extent that they need more help to go along with their new facilities. At the Fillmore Street location, with a combined 8,400 square feet, they operated with a fertilizer shed, mill shed, and chemical storage. Ostrander speed limit discussed By R ich Wicks rich@fillmorecountyjournal.com

Ostrander city council met in regular session on September 1. Members present were Erin Brugh, Pam Kunert, Mayor Pat Nesler, and Clerk Chris Hyrkas. Following the Pledge of Allegiance and approval of the consent agenda, the council heard from department heads. Public Works Director Jimmie Dean stated that “Everything’s running well” despite heavy rains last week, and said some repair/ maintenance parts are on order. Dustin Tart (Maintenance) asked about placement of the park bench, which CHS has donated in memory of Larry Vreeman. The bench is to be placed at the park. Jimmie Dean said they’d scouted out a spot south of the pavilion and between the trees. He said if this location is

approved, the city will need to simply call Gopher One prior to digging to install the bench. The council OK’d this placement. Mayor Nesler also asked Dustin to please sweep grass off sidewalks after mowing. Police Chief Tom Mosher updated the council on news in his department. He said the state has implemented a new system called the Minnesota Adult Abuse Reporting Center (MAARC) which he said connects to social services, human services, and law enforcement agencies. Chief Mosher informed the council that a property on the north edge of town has been taken over by a bank, and will now get mowed and cleaned up. He reminded residents to always lock homes, buildings, and vehicles to help prevent theft or break-ins. Chief Mosher then See SPEED Page 8 

Rushford Village considers bond for pavement plan By K irsten Zoellner kirsten@fillmorecountyjournal.com

The city of Rushford Village has long known that it’s behind on maintaining public roads. Over the last few years, the city council has actively worked to develop a plan to reconstruct or rework specific roads and put all on a maintenance plan. In 2013, the council had a detailed Pavement Management Plan created, complete with road condition surveys, mapping, and a 10-year outlook. The $1.2 million plan was struck down in 2014 by a citizen petition. Now, more than a year since the petition, the council is once again looking at bonding for the project or portions of it.

“We recognize that maybe we didn’t present it well last year, since it was overridden by a petition,” stated Mayor Gordon Johnson. “Maybe we didn’t explain that we weren’t raising taxes. We didn’t identify the fact that whatever we pay every year now is what is going to pay this bond back. I believe that what with what we have budgeted for road work, that is a true statement.” Bolton & Menk Engineer Josh Pope was on hand to discuss his perspective of the project and options for doing the work. “It’s not going to hurt doing it all at once. From an engineering perspective, it makes sense to go ahead and attack it all in one See PLAN Page 6 
