Fillmore County 4-H Ambassadors program thriving By Hannah Wingert The 4-H program has been an important part of the Fillmore County fair for years, but many people aren’t aware of just how much work goes on behind the scenes and all year round. The 4-H ambassadors, a group of young people ranging in age from 7th grade to just finished high school, meet once a month throughout the year to discuss possible projects and ways to get involved in the community. There are currently 21 4-H ambassadors for Fillmore County, a number that fluctuates each year. Not everyone makes it to each meeting, but they always make an effort. The group is one of the largest 4-H ambassador groups in Minnesota. The 4-H ambassador program is completely run by the youth, but there are several adult leaders who take on a parent-type role within the organization to offer guidance and advice when necessary. 4-H as a whole, is staffed by a large group of screened and trained adult volunteers. Jeff and Deb Goeldi have been the ambassador leaders for over 10 years now and, now that their

children are grown, they’re ready to pass the job on to someone else. For the last year, Colin and Jennifer Pickett, who have four children of their own in 4-H, have been learning the ropes and are preparing to take over as ambassador leaders. “Our role as advisors is to watch them and make sure they stay on track. We help them mold their ideas into projects,” said Jennifer. Both Jennifer and Colin are excited to begin their new positions. The 4-H ambassador program has assisted with Christmas in Fillmore County and started or helped with other programs that benefit the residents of the county. “We have a county lock-in for kids every year,” said ambassador Jessica Fenske, who went on to explain how they plan events throughout the night, have educational projects, etc. Each year, the group brainstorms a few new programs to work with or start. During the Fillmore County Fair, the 4-H ambassadors staff an office that is open for any kids at the fair who have questions about 4-H or just want a place to hang out. The office has games, couches, a radio, and thanks to

a fan, cement floors, and a good cross-breeze, usually stays pretty cool. For kids who spend the whole week at the fair showing animals, the office is a great place to relax for a little bit.

The ambassadors divide the areas of the fair among themselves, so one or two are in charge of each event. They also take turns staffing the office. Some of them participate in live radio interviews

during the fair as well. Applications to become a 4-H ambassador are accepted in August of each year and recently, an interview was added to the process. “We’re not going to turn anyone away,” said Jessica, “We feel that See AMBASSADORS Page 3 

interviews, life skills that are very important. 4-H is open to anyone from kindergarten up through those who have just graduated from high school, known as year 13 in 4-H. It is not restricted to a certain demographic and has projects and clubs for many different activities and interests. While a huge part of 4-H is agriculture and animals, there’s much more to it than that. Individuals interested in more information about 4-H and the ambassador program are and welcome to call (507) 765-3896.

Attention, kids of all ages! The Fillmore Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) will be celebrating our 75th Anniversary in 2017. We are asking for your help by creating a poster or logo that we can use next year that represents 75 years of soil and water con-

servation in Fillmore County. Bring your entry to the SWCD booth at the Fillmore County Fair, located in the west end of the Commercial Building by the school house, on Thursday, July 21, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. or on Friday, July 22, from 2-4 p.m. All entries will be

Poultry returns to the Fillmore County Fair By Barb Jeffers Poultry is back at the Fillmore County Fair for 2016 after last year’s threat of the avian flu prevented birds from being entered for judging. Kari Goldsmith, along with her husband Chris, are the adult PDC (Project Development Committee) for the poultry project at the fair and have been involved with the poultry project since their daughter started 4-H 10 years ago. She

explains, “Last year was tough, the kids were not able to bring birds to the fair,” but adds, “our kids did an excellent job on their projects last year - very creative and informative,” and three of the seven that went to the state fair won Grand or Reserve Champion there. Goldsmith states, “This year we are back to a live bird show and everyone is looking forward to having the birds at the fair once

again” for kids to show and spectators to see. Although the kids enjoy their time at the fair, there is also an educational and social aspect, as well. Goldsmith notes, “Like any other project, the poultry kids learn a lot. 4-H is a great group for kids to belong to, they learn so much, no matter what they take, whether it is a craft or wood shop to bringing a 1400# beef steer or a 80# goat,” states Goldsmith.

“These projects teach kids responsibility and work ethic, but more importantly confidence in presenting a project. They also learn teamwork, you don’t have to be on the football field or basketball court to learn this,” states Goldsmith. The 4-H kids work as a team, especially as older members show younger members the ropes. Goldsmith says, “It is always nice to see the kids pitching in to help each other out when and where it is needed. Then when the work is done, you see them all hanging

out in the barns having a great time with each other” and many of those friendships last a lifetime. There is quite a bit involved in showing poultry, as Goldsmith describes what the kids who plan to show their animals need to do. “We encourage the kids to sign up for the project interviews that are offered for each species of livestock. For this the kids take a short test and then meet one on one with volunteers from the community and discuss their project See POULTRY Page 8 

and answer a few questions that the judge has,” states Goldsmith. When it comes to actually showing the birds Goldsmith explains, “We also like to see the kids all try showmanship during the show, this is when the judge is judging the exhibitor, not so much the animal. This shows the judge that the 4-Hers don’t just grab their

bird out of the coop the day of Entry Day, that they have actually worked with them and gained their trust and that the kids know their animal,” answering a variety of questions from the anatomy of their animal, nutrition, and other areas. The poultry show at the 2016 Fillmore County Fair will be held on Tuesday, July 19 at 1 p.m. Goldsmith urges everyone, “Please come and support our 4-Hers through-

out the fair this year,” saying, “they work hard on these projects,” and they should be appreciated. “Take time to walk through all the barns and the 4-H building, we have some very talented young people in our county,” says Goldsmith. And while you are spending time at the fair, stop in and grab lunch or dinner at the 4-H food stand to help support the hardworking 4-H members.

Rabbits popular at the fair will have an abundance of rabbit entries compared to most years. Heather Barth, who is a member of the Rabbit Project Development Committee, states, “We are expecting to have around 165 rabbits at the Fillmore County Fair this year,” which is 60 or 70 more

rabbits than were signed up last year. “I am not totally sure what caused this influx,” says Barth, but explains, “some families have had kids move up from Cloverbuds to be able to show their own animals, as well as some families getting more rabbits to have here than last year,” which may partially explain the jump in numbers. Barth says the board “has been phenomenal at helping to get the rabbit barn prepared for the influx of entries,” adding some additional structure which will hold about 70 cages. As Barth explains, there are many positive benefits that kids get from showing rabbits. “The rabbit project is a great project for any kid to be able to bring 4-H livestock to the fair” for a variety of reasons, she notes. “Rabbits range in size from just 2 1/2 pounds to just over 14 pounds, depending on the breed, so you don’t need a barn or farm, which makes it easy for kids that live in town to be able to participate,” says Barth. “They are also a very inexpensive project, as they are usually quite inexpensive to purchase and don’t require a lot of supplies or food and they usually

don’t have any vet bills,” which makes them a very good starter pet and show animal for kids. Barth, who has a son, Caleb, 9, that participates in the rabbit project, states that the project “teaches kids the responsibility of caring for an animal on a smaller level,” preparing them for larger responsibilities in the future. Kids also have to do various research and studying of their particular breed, as well as rabbits in general, so it also has an educational piece to go along with the actual animal, so the kids are learning as they enjoy time with their rabbits. During the fair, the kids meet new people that share their interest in rabbits and also learn to improve their communication during the judging portion as they talk to the judge about their rabbit. Barth states, “The non-4-H rabbit community also offers open rabbit shows throughout the year so kids can stay active with it all year round” and reap the benefits. While you and your family are attending the Fillmore County Fair, take a few minutes to stop by and see the cute and fuzzy rabbit exhibit.

Recycling 101 By LaVerne C. Paulson Recycling Education Coordinator The Fillmore County Fair will be held from July 19 through July 24. A great number of Fillmore County residents attend the fair and hundreds pa r ticipate by exhibiting 4-H and LaVerne C. open class Paulson projects. Many people attend the fair to watch the judging of the cattle, sheep, chickens, ducks, geese, hogs, rabbits, horses, and goats. Others enjoy the grandstand events, commercial exhibits, fine arts, gardening, flowers, and needlework, as well as the varied 4-H projects. One thing almost all of the fairgoers enjoy is the food. The 4-H clubs serve up some great food and plenty of it. Then there are the brats, the pork burgers, cotton candy, mini donuts, and hot dogs. Of course, all that delicious, fat free food has to be washed down with a bottle of pop or water. When you have finished your snack, simply toss the napkin

and bottle cap into a garbage container, and drop the empty bottle into one of the many recycling containers located throughout the fairgrounds. Just look for of the blue signs with the “chasing arrows” symbol on it, and there should be a recycling container close by. Since we started the latest recycling project several years ago, we have collected thousands of bottles and cans that would have otherwise found their way into the landfill. These containers are made into toys, insulation, decking, lawn furniture, or car parts. Recycling your bottles and cans shows the people of our county as well as visitors from around Minnesota and two neighboring states that the residents of Fillmore County support recycling and do indeed care about the environment. Bottles and cans are not garbage, they are recyclables... and most of you know there is a big difference. The recycling booth will again be located in the west end of the commercial building. Just look for the large white Fillmore County Recycling sign with the black letters. There will be numerous items on display, some recyclable, some not, for you to sharpen and improve your recy-

cling habits. There will also be copies of the most recent Fillmore County Single Stream Recycling Guide. It contains almost everything you need to know about what is recyclable and what is not in Fillmore County. Please pick one up so you can become even more aware of what to recycle. I will be at the fair each day, so if you have any questions or comments concerning recycling in Fillmore County, please feel free to chat with me for a few minutes about recycling, garbage in general, or household hazardous waste. In case you haven’t made note of the next HHW day on your calendar, it is scheduled for the first Tuesday in October which happens to be the 4th this year. It will be held from 12-5 p.m. as usual. I will remind you of this a few more times before the October party so you can continue to gather all that nasty stuff to make your contribution. Again, please visit the Resource Recovery Center/Recycling Center booth while you are at the fair... and, when you are done with that bottle or can, deposit it in one of the recycling containers. We need to send each and every one of them to the recyclers, not the landfill. I hope to see you at the fair.
