PRESTON’S HISTORY & HERITAGE

Preston was founded by John Kaercher (pictured) in 1853. The location was desirable, as the Root River afforded opportunities for Kaercher to establish his flour mills along the river. The area offered abundant supplies of timber, water power, stonework and railway service. Preston is named after the town’s first postmaster, Luther Preston, a good friend and employee of Mr. Kaercher. LOOKING FOR MORE INFORMATION? CONTACT OUR VISITOR’S OFFICE!

PLANNING ESSENTIALS

PRESTON PLANNING ESSENTIALS

Not sure when to visit Preston? Here, we give you a season-by-season breakdown!

The best time of year to visit Preston depends on what you want to do. Each season has something unique to offer. While some see the harsh winter as a snowy paradise and joyfully count each foot of snow, others look forward to summer campfires and long days on the Root River. Locals are lucky to have time to explore the best of each season and probably wouldn’t have it any other way. Ask two people who live here, in Preston, and they will probably disagree on which season is best. Visitors to Preston aren’t in such a different position, either. If you know what to expect during our different seasons, you can get a jump on your planning and visit during the times you’ll like best...or you can learn a new reason to visit during a season you hadn’t considered before.

WHEN TO VISIT WINTER

SUMMER

November to March

June through August

Snowmobiler or not, our winter is when our valley, covered in snow, lives up to its image. It's the time for cross-country skiing on our many miles of State Bike Trails, snowmobile treks, and sitting beside a quiet fireplace watching the snow settle. You can also fish in town for catch and release trout.

Rivers run full. Bike trails are clear. The town swimming pool is open for a quick plunge to cool down from the hot summer sun. Town festivals are in full swing. The town jumps to life with its unique shops, restaurants and many exciting and fun events. Hiking, biking, camping, fishing, golfing...a list of summer’s pleasures in Preston and the Root River Trail Towns goes on and on.

SPRING April through May Although weather is unpredictable in Minnesota, this is when the trout fishing comes alive and people start gearing up for the warmer days ahead.

FALL

September to early November

For those who might see the options of summer as a bit too much to handle, fall is essentially a quieter version. The fall colors are vibrant and you can travel through the area while stopping at one of our two orchards! What would fall be without an apple treat?

FILLMORE COUNTY AIRPORT

The Fillmore County Airport includes a 4,000 by 75-foot paved runway. The airport provides a convenient and valuable transportation link for the local communities by allowing businesses and individuals to use general aviation instead of dealing with the airline hub system. The airport has a suitable fuel system that is available for use 24/7 and is installed with a credit card reader. The Fillmore County Airport also has a courtesy car. More information available at www.co.fillmore.mn.us/airport.

VETERAN FRIENDLY

VETERAN FRIENDLY COMMUNITY

The Veteran Friendly Community campaign began in 2018. Preston has always had a core group of Veterans in the community who have been dedicated community members. If you travel downtown you will see the Preston Servicemen’s Club which is home to the Preston American Legion, VFW, Sons of the American Legion and the Ladies Auxiliary groups. You will also find a vintage Army tank at our Trailhead Park as well as a WWI Memorial at the entrance of the Fillmore County Fairgrounds. The Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery is located on the outskirts of Preston and the first Veterans were laid to rest on Veterans Day in 2015.

Friendly

During flag holidays you will find hundreds of flags on business storefronts and in front of people’s homes to show our American Pride. The National Trout Center located downtown offers free fishing rentals to any Veteran and their family. In 2019, the Preston Area Chamber of Commerce will also be launching a Veteran and Military Discount program. Lastly, it is projected that in the late Fall of 2019 city officials along with the State of Minnesota will break ground on the land that will house the first Southeast Minnesota State Veterans Home. For more information on the Veteran Friendly Community and the future Veterans Home please visit www.prestonmnchamber.com/live/veteranfriendly-community/

BE PREPARED FOR THE ADVENTURE Always pack these essentials: water, food, extra clothes, first aid, and a phone.

• Be sure to check the weather forecast and conditions before you go. • Tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll be back. • Be sure you have the right route. • Always be willing to adjust your plan.

TRAVELER TIDBIT

Two state bike trails run through the heart of Preston, offering 60 miles of paved trails for your enjoyment!

TOP 4 SPOTS TO TAKE A SELFIE IN PRESTON

IS IT INSTA-WORTHY? THESE ARE! BE SURE TO HASHTAG YOUR PHOTOS WITH

#OnlyInMN #GetHookedOnPreston #PrestonMN

1

THE TROUT

The Preston Parade Trout typically rests along Hwy. 52 throughout the warmer months. Several people stop by to snag a selfie with “The Trout” each year! Because lets be honest, how often do you see a catch that big?

3

THE HISTORIC CAMPUS You don’t have to be a history buff to admit that our historical campus at the Trailhead is pretty colorful. Take a selfie with the caboose or the elevator and you’ll have a unique historic photo that makes it look like you’re back in the 1800s, riding the rails!

1

2

2

THE MURAL

The Preston Area Arts Council and community members spent several hours creating the beautiful mural that now rests above the Preston City Hall entrance. The colors are amazing. You won’t find a mural like it! The best part, it stands for everything PRESTON!

4

THE TANK

Located just off of the bike trail near the Preston Trailhead is the famous Army tank. You don’t get an opportunity to take a selfie with an Army tank very often. But in Veteran Friendly Preston, it’s a must-see!
