INTRO

Filmmuziek is al jarenlang een essentieel onderdeel van Film Fest Gent. Film Fest Gent Musicstaat jaar na jaar garant voor een groot aantal muzikale projecten: van filmmuziekconcerten (p. 5) en het uitbrengen van een compilatiealbum (p. 4) tot het aanbieden van masterclasses en verschillende industry events (p. 10 – 11). Hiermee wist Gent zich internationaal op de kaart te zetten als trefpunt voor zowel gereputeerd als piepjong muzikaal talent en is ons festival niet meer weg te denken uit de festivalkalender.Sinds de oprichting van de World Soundtrack Academyin 2001 zit filmmuziek pas echt verankerd in ons DNA. Zo selecteert De Academy elk jaar de winnaars van de World Soundtrack Awards(p. 3), de meest prestigieuze filmmuziekprijzen ter wereld. Dit jaar zijn Marco Beltrami, W orld Soundtrack Discovery of the Year Award 2018 winnaar Tamar-kali en Belgisch filmmuziek-icoon Frédéric Devreese onze eregasten. Dit jaar zetten we met ons themaconcert H ollywood Nightmares: Scary Symphonic Scores( p. 5)horror muzikaal in de verf. Als eerbetoon aan het genre dat zich als geen ander steeds weet te vernieuwen, passeren h orrorklassiekers van elke generatie de revue. Brussels Philharmonic onder leiding van maestro Dirk Brossé zal de scores van onder meer ‘The Bride of Frankenstein’, ‘King Kong’ en ‘The Fly’ tot leven wekken. Na een geslaagde eerste editie in 2018, slaan we opnieuw de handen in elkaar met Vooruit voor VIDEODROOM (p. 6 – 8), een uniek cross-overfestival tussen film en muziek. Op VIDEODROOM hoor je dit jaar onder andere een eerbetoon van GHOST aan ‘Alien’ en een optreden van CURL, het Londense underground-collectief met Mica Levi. In de sectie Sound & Vision(p. 12) van het Film Fest Gent-programma ontdek je dan weer de meest uiteenlopende speelfilms en documentaires over internationale muzikanten en artiesten.

Since the early beginnings, the focus on music and the celebration of the film composer have been the main features that make Film Fest Gent truly stand out in the international festival calendar. This year being no exception, F ilm Fest Gent Musicagain offers a wide range of musical projects for you to enjoy. During the annual World Soundtrack Awards(p. 3) we celebrate outstanding achievements in film music. Central guests this year are Marco Beltrami, World Soundtrack Discovery of the Year Award 2018 winner Tamar-kali and Belgian film music icon Frédéric Devreese. Hollywood Nightmares: Scary Symphonic Scores (p. 5) will focus on iconic horror scores in celebration of the genre that is more than ever claiming its rightful place within the film industry. Brussels Philharmonic, conducted by maestro Dirk Brossé, will bring scores from iconic movies like ‘The Bride of Frankenstein’, ‘King Kong’ and ‘The Fly’ back to life. Film Fest Gent and Vooruit are joining forces again for the second edition of VIDEODROOM (p. 6 – 8): a 10-day crossover universe, balancing between film and music. This year’s edition of VIDEODROOM features an homage to ‘Alien’ by GHOST and a performance by CURL, the London underground collective with Mica Levi. And, like each year, Film Fest Gent’s Sound & Vision section (p. 12) showcases the best documentaries and feature films on a wide array of music and musicians. De World Soundtrack Awards, de belangrijkste internationale filmmuziekprijzen ter wereld, worden sinds 2001 uitgereikt door de World Soundtrack Academy tijdens een awardshow vol muzikale hoogtepunten. De avond is een hulde aan gevestigde namen, maar ook een ontmoeting met opkomend talent. Je kan genieten van een symfonisch concert dat volledig in het teken van de gasten staat: een selectie van hun werk wordt live uitgevoerd door Brussels Philharmonic onder leiding van maestro Dirk Brossé, vergezeld door filmfragmenten op het grote scherm. Op 18 oktober is Marco Beltrami, één van de meest briljante filmcomponisten van zijn generatie, onze eregast. De veelgeprezen Amerikaanse componist maakte al snel furore met zijn innovatieve score voor de ‘Scream’-franchise. Zijn werk voor ‘3:10 to Yuma’ en ‘The Hurt Locker’ leverde Beltrami bovendien twee Academy Award-nominaties op. Onlangs schreef hij nog de muziek voor de box-office hit ‘A Quiet Place’, genomineerd voor een Golden Globe voor Best Score, ‘Velvet Buzzsaw’ voor Netflix en de Oscarwinnende documentaire ‘Free Solo’ van National Geographic. Naar jaarlijkse traditie verwelkomt Film Fest Gent ook de winnende componist van de vorige World Soundtrack Discovery of the Year Award. Dit jaar nodigen we dus de Amerikaanse muzikant-componist Tamar-kali uit, die in 2018 de prijs won voor haar muziek in de Oscar-genomineerde film ‘Mudbound’ van Dee Rees.

As a yearly tradition, we welcome the winner of the previous World Soundtrack Discovery of the Year Award to the stage to perform new music. This year, our guest will be Brooklyn-born musician and composer Tamar-kali, who won the award in 2018 for her music in Dee Rees’ Oscar-nominated film ‘Mudbound’. In addition to the international guests, this year’s edition pays homage to an icon of Belgian film music, Frédéric Devreese, who recently celebrated his 90th birthday. His extensive repertoire, featuring scores for André Delvaux and Hugo Claus, will be honoured.

SCREAM

Naast de internationale gasten is er dit jaar een unieke hommage aan een boegbeeld van de Belgische filmmuziek, Frédéric Devreese, die eerder dit jaar 90 kaarsjes mocht uitblazen. Het repertoire van de componist, met scores voor André Delvaux en Hugo Claus, wordt in de bloemetjes gezet.

Since 2001, internationally established film music professionals unite at the World Soundtrack Awards to celebrate outstanding achievements in scoring music for motion pictures and TV series. A selection of our guests’ work will be performed by Brussels Philharmonic, conducted by maestro Dirk Brossé, with accompanying film clips on the big screen. Guest of honour this year is globally acclaimed composer Marco Beltrami. His oeuvre includes genre-bending scores for the ‘Scream’-franchise as well as Academy Award-nominated work for ‘3:10 to Yuma’ and ‘The Hurt Locker.’ Recently, Beltrami received a Golden Globe nomination for box office hit ‘A Quiet Place’ and scored the Oscar-winning National Geographic documentary ‘Free Solo.’

Compositiewedstrijd Met de jaarlijkse compositiewedstrijd voor jonge internationale componisten zijn de World Soundtrack Awards ook een platform voor aanstormend talent. Deze wedstrijd daagt jonge filmmusici uit om een nieuwe score te schrijven bij een geselecteerd film- of tv-fragment. Zo krijg je dit jaar de originele, symfonische scores van de drie finalisten te horen bij een scène uit Nicolas Roegs duistere thriller ‘Don’t Look Now’. Een internationale jury onder leiding van Dirk Brossé bepaalt wie naar huis gaat met de SABAM Award for the Most Original Composition by a Young International Composer, ter waarde van €2.500 en het L ondon Contemporary Orchestra Texture-pakket van Spitfire Audio.

The World Soundtrack Awards programme also includes three original, symphonic scores accompanying a scene from Nicolas Roeg’s ‘Don’t Look Now’, written by the finalists of the Composition Contest for Young International Film Composers. An international jury, headed by conductor-composer Dirk Brossé, awards the winner the SABAM Award for the Most Original Composition by a Young International Composer, worth €2,500 and the London Contemporary Orchestra Texture sample toolkit provided by Spitfire Audio.

Nu het genre aan een artistieke revival bezig is, met succesfilms als ‘Get Out’, ‘Hereditary’ en ‘Midsommar’, is deze editie de uitgelezen kans voor een themaconcert rond de horrorfilm. Le Motel is vooral bekend door zijn vele samenwerkingen met hiphopgod Roméo Elvis, Clap! Clap!, Yellowstraps en Veence Hanao. De producer combineert graag etnische muziek met elementen uit footwork, hiphop, jazz en techno. Op VIDEODROOM werkt hij samen met beeldend kunstenaar Antoine De Schuyter, en stelt meteen zijn nieuwe AV show voor. Ook Antwerpenaar Corrupted presenteert een zelfontworpen AV project, ‘Delusion’ – denk aan een flinke portie beats, footwork en visuals à la Flying Lotus en Amon Tobin. DTM Funk sluit af met een pittige set vol beats, leftfield electronica en juke.

Jozef Van Wissem

Jozef Van Wissem speelde op prestigieuze festivals als All Tomorrow Parties en Primavera, maakte samen met regisseur Jim Jarmusch vier albums en won de Cannes Soundtrack Award in 2013 voor de soundtrack van Jarmusch’ ‘Only Lovers Left Alive’. De minimalistische componist zakt tijdens VIDEODROOM af naar Vooruit om er zijn nieuwste project voor te stellen: een live score bij de wondermooie stille film van Yevgeny Bauer ‘The Dying Swan’ uit 1917. Minimalist composer Jozef Van Wissem will be visiting Vooruit during VIDEODROOM to present his latest project: a live score to accompany the achingly beautiful silent film ‘The Dying Swan’ by Yevgeny Bauer from 1917.

Haley Fohr a.k.a. Circuit des Yeux plays ‘Salomé’

Haley Fohr, alias Circuit des Yeux, nam de originele score van het exotische camp-pareltje ‘Salomé’ (Charles Bryant, 1922) onder handen. Met haar onvergetelijke stem – een kruising tussen Nico en Scott Walker – en geruggensteund door een live band, brengt Fohr een moderne, feministische update die het stereotype van de femme fatale onderuit haalt. Haley Fohr, a.k.a. Circuit des Yeux, took the original score of the silent film ‘Salomé’ (Charles Bryant, 1922) into her studio. With her unforgettable voice – with qualities reminiscent of Nico and Scott Walker – and with the support of a live band, Fohr will present a modern, feminist update that undermines the femme fatale stereotype.

In 2019 vieren we de veertigste (!) verjaardag van ‘Alien’, de iconische scifi klassieker van regisseur Ridley Scott. De film, met het ondertussen legendarisch geworden monster van H.R. Giger, krijgt op zaterdag 12 oktober een onvergetelijk eresaluut in Vooruit. Als onderdeel van VIDEODROOM sleutelen GHOST en Vooruit opnieuw samen aan een uniek parcours, waarbij klassieke scènes uit de film je nog eens de stuipen op het lijf jagen. In 2019 we’re celebrating the fortieth anniversary of the release of ‘Alien’, the iconic sci-fi classic from director Ridley Scott. Muzikant, slam poet en multidisciplinaire kunstenaar Camae Ayewa alias Moor Mother stelt in Belgische première ‘The Great Bailout’ voor, een vurig pleidooi waarin live performance en film screening gemixt worden. Ze riep de hulp in van het London Contemporary Orchestra, een klasse-ensemble dat samenwerkte met o.a. Radiohead en Steve Reich, en soundtracks van topfilms als ‘Phantom Thread’ en ‘There Will be Blood’ kleurde.

Moon Duo verkent sinds 2009 allerlei occulte universa waar psychedelische krautrock en elektronische drones regeren. Op hun nieuwe album ‘Stars Are The Light’ slaat het duo andere paden in: seventies funk en nineties rave vormen deze keer de leidraad. Hun wereldtournee starten ze in Vooruit, live geruggensteund door een even geestverruimende lichtshow van beeldend kunstenaar Emmanuel Biard.

CURL is een in Londen opererend collectief, label en gemeenschap, met het trio Brother May, Coby Sey en Mica Levi achter het stuur. De eclectische catalogus van CURL bevat een bonte mengelmoes van jazz, grime, soundscapes en hiphop. International Master in Composition for Screen

In september 2019 gaat het tweede academiejaar van de International Master in Composition for Screen van start. Film Fest Gent werkte de afgelopen jaren mee aan de ontwikkeling van deze Masteropleiding gericht op het componeren van muziek voor audiovisuele media. Studenten kunnen rekenen op de knowhow van acht partnerorganisaties en doen praktijkervaring op tijdens de verschillende masterclasses en workshops van het InMICS Composers Lab, dat vorig jaar in Gent van start ging. I n oktober 2020 studeert de eerste groep InMICS-studenten af met een ‘final conference’ tijdens Film Fest Gent 2020, waar hun werk wordt voorgesteld. September 2019 will mark the start of the second academic year of the International Master in Composition for Screen. Film Fest Gent has contributed to the development of a new joint master’s degree dedicated to international students wishing to work as composers for audiovisual media. The programme also offers students the opportunity to boost their practical know-how during the InMICS Composers Lab, which kicked off in Ghent last year. Film Fest Gent en Watch That Sound nodigen lagere en middelbare scholen uit voor een educatieve muziekworkshop. Kinderen maken er op een actieve en creatieve manier kennis met muziek en geluid in film. Creative Partnership: Marco Beltrami & Michaël R. Roskam Het Film Music Seminar is een unieke kans om bij te leren van een grootmeester in de filmmuziek. Curator dr. Martine Huvenne gaat in gesprek met tweevoudig Oscar-genomineerd componist Marco Beltrami. Aan gespreksonderwerpen alvast geen gebrek: Beltrami’s imposante carrière staat bol van de indrukwekkende projecten waarvoor hij zijn grenzen als muzikant keer op keer verlegde. Het arsenaal van de Amerikaanse componist reikt van bombastisch, symfonisch werk tot elektronische soundtracks, waarvoor hij in de leer ging bij de Italiaanse avantgardecomponist Luigi Nono. Beltrami vervaagt vaak de lijn tussen verschillende stijlen en laat zich dikwijls inspireren door het geluid, wat voor een unieke sound zorgt.

Beltrami werd wereldwijd bekend dankzij zijn werk voor de ‘Scream’-franchise van Wes Craven. Zijn horror-scores zitten ook verweven in Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Hellboy’. Maar Beltrami bindt zich niet aan één genre: ook regisseur Tommy Lee Jones’ westerns ‘The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada’ en ‘The Homesman’ voorzag hij van een eigenzinnige soundtrack. Zijn werk voor Oscarwinnaar ‘The Hurt Locker’ van Kathryn Bigelow levert stof voor een discussie over het verschil in een muzikale samenwerking met een mannelijke of vrouwelijke regisseur. In het recente werk van Beltrami valt John Krasinski’s Golden Globe-nominee ‘A Quiet Place’ op. Hoe gaat een componist om met het scoren van een film die draait om de afwezigheid van geluid? Dichter bij huis vinden we het werk van Beltrami ook in films van de Franse regisseurs Bertrand Tavernier (‘In The Electric Mist’) en Jean-François Richet (‘Mesrine’). Afsluiten doen we met een Belgische samenwerking. Michaël R. Roskam, die met Beltrami samenwerkte voor zijn Amerikaanse project ‘The Drop’, deelt zijn inzichten tijdens het laatste deel van het seminarie.

The Film Music Seminar is your yearly catch-up with the world of film and music collaborations. This year, curator dr. Martine Huvenne welcomes two-time Oscar nominated composer Marco Beltrami. His impressive career is filled to the brim with acclaimed, high-profile projects. Often finding his inspiration in a film’s sound, Beltrami blurs the line between symphonic masterpieces and electronic soundtracks, the latter being heavily influenced by the mentoring of Italian avant-garde composer Luigi Nono. Beltrami rose to international fame with his work on Wes Craven’s ‘Scream’-franchise. His horrorscores also seep through Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Hellboy’. With director Tommy Lee Jones’ ‘The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada’ and ‘The Homesman’, Beltrami had the opportunity to score two westerns. Through his work on the Oscar-winning ‘The Hurt Locker’ with director Kathryn Bigelow, we open up the conversation about the differences between working on film music with a male versus a female director. COMPOSER TALK Hildur Guðnadóttir

Moderated by Robert Kraft

Maar Guðnadóttir profileert zich al jaren als een pionier in experimentele pop en hedendaagse muziek. Ze componeerde al voor dans, theater en film, waaronder samenwerkingen met Jóhann Jóhannsson, Hauschka en Ryuichi Sakamoto. Naast componist is Guðnadóttir ook een getalenteerd cellist en zangeres. Als soloartiest bracht ze al 4 albums uit die meermaals genomineerd werden voor de Icelandic Music Awards. De Composer Talk wordt in goede banen geleid door Robert Kraft, die tussen 1994 en 2012 aan het hoofd stond van Fox Music, een periode waarin scores als die van ‘Titanic’ en ‘Moulin Rouge’ onder zijn leiding records verbraken. Na zijn periode bij Fox Music richtte hij Kraftbox Entertainment op, waarmee hij de filmmuziek in de kijker blijft zetten, en is hij actief als producer van onder andere de film ‘SCORE: A Film Music Documentary’. Over the past year, Icelandic composer Hildur Guðnadóttir rose to prominence as one of film music’s most promising revelations. Just last year, she earned a nomination for the World Soundtrack Discovery of the Year Award for her work on ‘Sicario: Day of the Soldado’. In the meantime, her score for HBO’s hit series ‘Chernobyl’ has caught the ear of international audiences. Next to ‘Chernobyl’, which earned Guðnadóttir her first Emmy nomination, her work is found in Todd Phillips’ highly anticipated ‘Joker’, premiering at the prestigious film festivals of Venice and Toronto this year. But Hildur Guðnadóttir had already been manifesting herself at the forefront of experimental pop and contemporary music for years. She has composed music for theatre, dance performances and films, including collaborations with Jóhann Jóhannsson, Hauschka and Ryuichi Sakamoto. Next to composing, Guðnadóttir is a gifted cello player and singer. As a solo artist,

she has released four acclaimed albums which earned her several Icelandic Music Award nominations. The Composer Talk will be led by Robert Kraft, Fox Music’s president from 1994 to 2012. He is currently involved in his own Kraftbox Entertainment, founded in 2013, which continues to give film music the attention it deserves. Het afgelopen jaar leerde het publiek de IJslandse Hildur Guðnadóttir kennen, een van de meest veelbelovende revelaties in de filmmuziekwereld. Vorig jaar nog werd ze genomineerd voor de World Soundtrack Discovery of the Year Award voor haar muziek in ‘Sicario: Day of the Soldado’. Ondertussen gooit Guðnadóttirs score voor de baanbrekende HBO-hitserie ‘Chernobyl’ wereldwijd hoge ogen. Ze vervaagt de grens tussen filmmuziek en sound design met haar onconventionele aanpak: samen met sound recordist Chris Watson trok ze naar een verlaten kerncentrale waar Watson de omgevingsgeluiden opnam. Die geluiden verwerkte Guðnadóttir tot een innovatieve compositie die geen enkel instrument telt. Naast ‘Chernobyl’, waar Guðnadóttir haar eerste Emmy-nominatie voor kreeg, is haar werk te horen in de langverwachte film ‘Joker’ van Todd Phillips, die dit jaar in première gaat op de prestigieuze filmfestivals van Venetië en Toronto.

The Sound & Vision section of Film Fest Gent showcases the best documentaries and fiction films about concerts, musicians and music styles, transcending the boundaries of traditional film genres.
