Ontmoeten Film Fest Gent is meer dan het jaarlijkse filmbad waarin je de beste films ontdekt die de voorbije maanden gemaakt zijn. Het is ook het moment waarop we alle spelers uit de filmsector samenbrengen, aan het woord laten en confronteren met wat wereldwijd aan de orde is in de AV-industrie. Een ambitie die we in 2020 door COVID-19 grotendeels moesten schrappen, maar die we dit jaar terug centraal stellen. Nooit eerder brachten we zoveel filmtalent van over de hele wereld samen: we laten ze in gesprek gaan met elkaar en met het publiek. We geven ook een platform aan nieuwe filmen filmmuziekprojecten en we gaan samen met de beroepsverenigingen in debat over wat de sector aanbelangt. Het industrieprogramma dat we in deze brochure presenteren, levert ongetwijfeld nieuwe inzichten en interessante perspectieven voor de filmindustrie, voor de filmstudent die overweegt om er deel van uit te maken, en voor de filmliefhebber die graag een blik achter de schermen werpt.

Maar festivals zijn ook het moment om alle spelers uit het beroep samen te brengen, oude bekenden terug te zien en de nieuwe stemmen op te merken. Om te horen wie waarmee bezig is en wat er zit aan te komen. Op de FFG-editie 2021 kan je je COVIDachterstand aan ontmoetingen inhalen in het Film Fest Café op de Kinepolis-site. Director’s Talks Ook dit jaar zakken heel wat interessante gasten af naar Gent: het perfecte moment om hen een microfoon onder de neus te duwen. Tijdens de Talkies van Film Fest Gent op de middag (13:00) in het Film Fest Café - en de verschillende Director's Talks en Composer's Talks laten we regisseurs, auteurs, componisten en cinematografen aan het woord. Director’s Talk Jacqueline Lentzou Jacqueline Lentzou’s verfrissende, eigen filmtaal kan omschreven worden als intiem of dromerig, maar het is vooral de bijzondere gevoeligheid waarmee ze haar personages in beeld brengt die opvalt en haar tot een van de meest markante namen op het programma maakt. De afgelopen jaren veroverde ze het internationale kortfilmcircuit met eigenzinnige pareltjes. Jacqueline Lentzou’s refreshing and idiosyncratic film language can be described as intimate and dreamy, but the most striking - perhaps - is the incredible sensitivity with which Lentzou approaches her characters. She received international acclaim with her shorts.

Gemodereerd door regisseur Louisiana Mees. Moderated by director Louisiana Mees. Jacqueline Lentzou is een van de grootste talenten van de hedendaagse Griekse cinema. Ze maakte al naam en faam met een resem eigenzinnige kortfilms. Ze heeft een geheel eigen filmtaal, iets wat ze ook bewijst met haar langspeeldebuut Moon, 66 Questions, dat in première gaat op Film Fest Gent. Jacqueline Lentzou is one of the most exciting new voices in Greek cinema today. She has received international acclaim for her shorts, and for her feature debut Moon, 66 Questions.

The First 54 Years laat zich bekijken als een handleiding voor militaire bezetters. Avi Mograbi wordt beschouwd als de belangrijkste Israëlische documentarist. Hij is een toegewijde getuige van de conflicten in het Midden-Oosten en stelt als politieke filmmaker kritische vragen in zijn werk. In zijn nieuwste film bezorgt hij een fictieve handleiding voor een militaire bezetting. Avi Mograbi is considered Israel’s most important documentarist and a committed eyewitness of the Middle East conflict, who asks critical questions in his work. His latest feature offers a fictional manual for military occupation.

In augustus 2020 sloten Miguel Gomes en Maureen Fazendeiro zich op in een pittoresk landhuis met cast en crew en het idee om een geïmproviseerde film ineen te boksen. Het resultaat: een dromerige, kleurrijke fictie over een driehoeksrelatie. Met frisse spontaniteit en een eigenzinnige benadering tot het medium slaagt het regieduo erin om een heerlijke ode aan filmmaken ineen te puzzelen.

In August 2020, directing duo Miguel Gomes and Maureen Fazendeiro locked themselves in a picturesque mansion with cast and crew and the idea of putting together an improvised film. The result: a dreamy, colorful fiction about a love triangle. Crista, Carloto and João are building an airy greenhouse for butterflies in the garden. The three of them share household routines, day after day. And they are not the only ones.

De Portugese regisseur Miguel Gomes won in 2012 de Grand Prix op Film Fest Gent met Tabu en verbaasde in 2015 met het driedelige meesterwerk Arabian Nights. Samen met coregisseur en partner Maureen Fazendeiro draaide hij The Tsugua Diaries tijdens de pandemie Portuguese director Miguel Gomes won the Grand Prix at FFG2012 with Tabu and received international acclaim for his trilogy Arabian Nights. Together with co-director and partner Maureen Fazendeiro, he shot The Tsugua Diaries during the pandemic.

De Roemeense filmauteur Radu Jude is met zijn films een habitué geworden op Film Fest Gent en was ook al lid van de jury in 2019. Jude is vooral berucht voor zijn onvermoeibaar vermogen om het donkere verleden van zijn land binnenstebuiten te keren. Met zijn Gouden Beer-winnende nieuwe film kijkt hij echter naar het heden en de invloed van sociale media. Romanian film auteur Radu Jude has become a much-loved guest at Film Fest Ghent and was a member of our international jury in 2019. Jude is known for turning his eye toward the darker side of his country's past. With his new film however - which won the Golden Bear at the Berlin filmfestival - he looks at the present and the influence of social media.

Al sinds zijn debuut Calvaire (2004) - deel van een losse Ardennentrilogie samen met Alleluia (2014) en Adoration (2019) - speelt Fabrice du Welz fijntjes met de grenzen van drama, thriller en horror. Zijn nieuwste film, Inexorable, is een sinistere thriller die alweer het beste in du Welz naar boven haalt. His unique approach to genre filmmaking has made Belgian director Fabrice du Welz one of the most interesting filmmakers out there. His latest feature, Inexorable, is a domestic thriller which - yet again - brings out the best in du Welz.

Voor wie nog nooit een film van Angelopoulos zag, is dit meesterwerk misschien wel de beste introductie. Deze magnifieke film over de zoektocht van twee kinderen - een meisje van twaalf en haar broertje van zes - naar de vader die ze nooit hebben gekend of die misschien niet eens bestaat, is ook emotioneel zijn meest directe werk. In strak gecomponeerde beelden toont hij hun diverse ontmoetingen, inwijdingen en beproevingen. The prodigal father who figures in almost every Angelopoulos film here has evaporated into his mythical essence - leaving his children to become the wanderers in search of him. In order to exorcise their loneliness, they invent a secret universe for themselves, inhabited by their dreams.

Cinematograaf Giorgos Arvanitis wordt vaak in één adem genoemd met de Griekse meestercineast Theo Angelopoulos. Hij blikte bijna alle films van hem in en is dus mee verantwoordelijk voor de iconische tableaus en long takes in het oeuvre van Angelopoulos. DoP Giorgos Arvanitis shot most films by master of cinema Theo Angelopoulos. He is thus equally responsible for the iconic tableaux and long takes in the oeuvre of the director.

Andrea Arnolds intieme documentaire gaat over Luma, een melkkoe die in de openingsscène een kalfje krijgt. Daarna volgt Arnold het kalf tot het zelf een volwassen melkkoe is. Cameravrouw Magda Kowalczyk zit deze dieren zo dicht op de huid dat de lens bijna aandampt als hun natte neuzen voorbij zoeven, om zo het vlees op je bord een onvergetelijk gezicht te geven.

Andrea Arnold is een van de meest invloedrijke Britse cineasten. Haar films focussen vaak op kwetsbare mensen in de marge van het kapitalistische systeem. Ze won al drie keer de Prix du Jury in Cannes met Red Road (2006), Fish Tank (2009) en American Honey (2016).

Andrea Arnold’s films are often about outsiders consumed by a capitalist world, where freedom lies somewhere between the boundaries of “eat or be eaten”. For Cow you can take that literally. In this intimate documentary about a calf growing up as a dairy cow, cinematographer Magda Kowalczyk gives the meat on your plate an unforgettable face.

Animals - Nabil Ben Yadir In april 2012 verdwijnt Ihsane Jarfi in Luik. De dertiger wordt voor het laatst gezien in de buurt van een homobar, vlak voor hij in een auto met vier andere mannen stapt. Twee weken later wordt hij dood en zwaar verminkt teruggevonden. De vier passagiers worden veroordeeld voor homofobe moord. “We gedroegens ons als beesten”, zei een van hen tijdens het proces. Les Barons-cineast Nabil Ben Yadir inspireert zich op deze beestachtige misdaad. In April 2012, Ihsane Jarfi disappeared from Liège. He was last seen near a gay bar, just before getting into a car with four other men. He was found dead two weeks later. The four passengers were convicted for this hate crime. “We behaved like animals,” one of them said. Filmmaker Nabil Ben Yadir draws inspiration from this beastly crime.

Gasten Guests: Guy Dupont, Lies Van de Vijver, Daniël Biltereyst, Roel Vande Winkel Het boek Gent Filmstad: Cinema’s en filmaffiches, 1938 - 1961 bevat zeldzame foto’s, bouwplannen, filmprogrammaties, archiefdocumenten en interviews met cinemabezoekers uit de jaren ‘30, ‘40 en ‘50 en vervolledigen het beeld van de meer dan dertig bioscopen die Gent toen telde. De expo in De Krook loopt nog tot vr 29.10. Achter het digitaal platform Cinema Belgica zit een enorme databank vol gegevens over Belgische filmproducties, bioscopen en filmvertoningen. The book Gent Filmstad: Cinema's en filmaffiches, 1938 - 1961 contains rare photos, building plans, film programmes and interviews with cinema visitors from the 30s, 40s and 50s. Behind the digital platform Cinema Belgica is an enormous database full of data on Belgian film productions, cinemas and film screenings.

Vlaanderen krijgt twee nieuwe filmtijdschriften. Zowel Humbug als Fantômas lanceren hun allereerste gedrukt nummer op Film Fest Gent. Een perfect moment dus om de initiatiefnemers in gesprek te laten gaan met elkaar over de staat van filmkritiek met Ronald Rovers, de hoofdredacteur van het Nederlandse magazine Filmkrant. Both brand-new film magazines Humbug and Fantômas are launching their very first print issue at Film Fest Ghent. A perfect moment to allow the initiators to discuss the state of film criticism.

Tommy Pearson

Producer, regisseur en muzikant Tommy Pearson is al meer dan 25 jaar een bekende figuur in de Britse muziekwereld. Filmmuziek heeft zijn carrière gedomineerd, als concertproducer en presentator. Hij presenteert al 15 jaar het RPO's Film Music Gala in de Royal Albert Hall en host talloze talks en evenementen over filmmuziek, waaronder Conversations with Screen Composers voor BAFTA. Tommy is trots op zijn lange samenwerking met de World Soundtrack Awards. Broadcaster, producer, director and musician, Tommy Pearson has been a familiar figure in the UK music world for over 25 years. After an early career as a percussionist and composer, he became one of the busiest voices on BBC Radio. Tommy has produced and hosted concerts around the world and worked with most of the UK’s major orchestras. As onstage host, Tommy has presented the RPO’s Film Music Gala at the Royal Albert Hall for 15 years, and countless talks and events on film music, including the current Conversations with Screen Composers for BAFTA. Tommy is proud of his long association with the World Soundtrack Awards as host of the awards show.

Ruben De Gheselle is een filmcomponist die kleur en karakterontwikkeling altijd hoog in het vaandel heeft staan. Zijn muziek was al te horen op de nationale podia van België, zoals deSingel, Flagey, Concertgebouw Brugge en de Bijloke Muziekcentrum. Rubens scores ontvingen muziekprijzen variërend van Best Original Music op het Annecy International Filmfestival (2016) tot de lokale Emile Mathieu Award. In 2019 ontving een cd met zijn compositie Wildlands het label Choice of Klara. Ruben De Gheselle is a film composer who keeps colour and character development always on the top of his mind. Since 2019, he has been increasingly called upon for feature film projects by directors, such as Ilinca Calegueranu, Victor Ridley and Nathalie Álvarez Mesén. Ruben’s music and soundtracks received music awards ranging from Best Original Music in the Annecy International Filmfestival (2016), Best Music in a European Short in the Angers International Filmfestival (2014) to the local Emile Mathieu Award upon graduation in 2014. In 2017, he was selected as a Berlinale Talent.

WSA Industry Days Part II Wo/We 20.10 13:00 • Kinepolis 8 Masterclass: Music and Sound Design in Games by Alex Otterlei Alex Otterlei startte zijn carrière met muziek voor videospellen als Xyanide en de Divinityreeks van het Gentse Larian Studios. Momenteel doceert hij Sound Design, Foley and Voice Directing for Games in de opleiding Digital Arts and Entertainment in Kortrijk. In deze masterclass gaat hij dieper in op het belang van muziek in games en de taak van de sounddesigner in de gamesector. Alex Otterlei pioneered the art of writing soundtracks for role-playing games, to international acclaim. As a composer and sound designer he worked on games such as Xyanide and the Divinity series. He is currently teaching Sound Design, Foley and Voice Directing for Games, as part of the Audio Major which he helped create at Digital Arts and Entertainment in Kortrijk. Moderator: Youri Loedts (VAF) Gasten Guests: Wim Coryn (Wild Cherry Consult), Olivier Maeterlinck & David Hutsebaut (Sabam), Alex Otterlei, Pablo Schwilden Diaz (Demute), Austin Wintory De regeling rond vergoeding en auteursrechten tussen gameontwikkelaars en componisten is nog vaak een twistpunt. In dit panelgesprek overlopen de gasten enkele courante praktijken en gaan ze op zoek naar een manier om deze regeling te verbeteren. The arrangement about remuneration and author’s rights between game developers and composers is often a point of contention. Author’s rights societies seem to be radically opposed to buy-out contracts, whereas for indie developers it is often the only deal they can accept to rule out all of the risks. Game developers are also not eager to deal with local negotiations and contracts, especially when doing buy-outs is easy and cheap, and the music itself is of high quality. Therefore, composers often do not get a proportionate remuneration for their work. In this panel talk our guests examine how composers can get a proportionate remuneration for their work and search for a way to improve contract negotiations.

Moderator: Annette Gentz In 2021 werd Austin Wintory’s muziek voor het populaire PlayStation3-spel Journey de eerste videogamescore ooit die een Grammy-nominatie in de wacht sleepte. In deze Composer’s Talk zal Austin Wintory reflecteren over zijn carrièrepad als zowel game- als filmcomponist en inzoomen op zijn meest recente game The Pathless. In 2012, Austin Wintory’s soundtrack for the hit PlayStation3 game Journey became the first-ever Grammy-nominated videogame score. Excerpts from the score have been performed all over the world, including by such ensembles as the National Symphony, San Francisco Symphony and Pacific Symphony. His film work includes the Sundance-winning film Captain Abu Raed, along with over 40 other indie features. In this composer talk, Austin Wintory will reflect on his career as both game and film composer, and will zoom in on his latest video game The Pathless.

Een soundtrack wordt niet van de ene op de andere dag gemaakt en verschillende, soms extreme, invalshoeken van een scène moeten worden onderzocht. Ook voor Clara Sola vormde ruw, snel en gericht schetsen met muziek een belangrijk onderdeel van het werk- en dialoogproces tussen filmmaker en componist.

The Belgian composer Ruben De Gheselle and Costa Rican-Swedish director Nathalie Álvarez Mesén discuss their latest Film Clara Sola. A soundtrack is not made overnight and various, sometimes extreme, angles to a scene should be explored. For Clara Sola, too, a technique of rough, fast and focused sketching with music formed an important part of the working and dialogue process between the two artists. In this panel they discuss some of those scenes and how they came about from initial idea to final recorded form. Ruben De Gheselle and Nathalie Álvarez Mesén are alumni of the famous Berlinale Talents program. Clara Sola was selected for Film Fest Ghent.

Nainita Desai impressed the world with her original music for the documentaries For Sama and Sundance favourite The Reason I Jump. As a sound designer she cooperated with Bernardo Bertolucci, Werner Herzog, Anthony Hopkins and Angelina Jolie. During the talk she will delve into her immersive, yet sometimes minimalist approach to scoring documentaries, her eclectic background as a sound designer, orchestra maestra and how world music, found sound, electronics and the human voice fuel her emotive scores. This year, she is nominated for three WSAwards: Film Composer of the Year, Discovery of the Year and the Public. Choice Award.

15:30 - Kinepolis 8 Composer’s Talk: Max Richter Moderator: Tommy Pearson Max Richter is een monument in de hedendaagse muziekwereld, met baanbrekend werk als componist, pianist en producer. Richter brak in 2008 door als filmcomponist met zijn score voor de geanimeerde oorlogsdocumentaire Waltz with Bashir van Ari Folman. Ondertussen heeft hij al muziek geschreven voor meer dan dertig films. Ook op tv is zijn muziek vaak te horen, zoals bijvoorbeeld in de cultserie The Leftovers.

Max Richter stands as one of the most monumental figures on the contemporary music scene, with ground-breaking work as a composer, pianist, producer, and collaborator. He rose to prominence as a composer for film and TV in 2008 with his original score for Waltz with Bashir by Ari Folman, and has now written scores for over thirty features, including James Gray’s sci-fi opus Ad Astra and the Oscar-nominated Werk ohne Autor by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. His music can be heard on tv in the cult hit series The Leftovers, but also in Nosedive, the Black Mirror episode starring Bryce Dallas Howard, and BBC series Taboo for which Richter received an Emmy nomination.
