ECSA's Secretary General. He previously worked for the European Film Agency Directors, the Motion Picture Association, the European Commission and for Eurocinema.

Hans Helewaut

Composer Hans Helewaut’s work includes the score for the animation film Cafard, which won a World Soundtrack Award. He takes an active role in defending the rights of composers as a board member of Sabam, de Muziekgilde and Belgium Screen Composers Guild.

Luc Gulinck

Luc Gulinck is a jurist specialising in entertainment law. Having gained experience working for the influential dance label R&S Records and for majors Sony Music Entertainment and EMI Music, he now operates as an independent consultant for composers, performers, producers and other actors in the music and audio-visual industry.

Anselm Kreuzer - moderator

Anselm Kreuzer is a composer of music for television, film, and other audiovisual media. He has written numerous title tunes for TV shows, score music for several TV series, and a huge oeuvre of production music. He is a board member of Composers Club Germany since 2014 and a Board Member of ECSA.

Film Composer & Film Producer: Balancing a Budget

Dit panelgesprek brengt de beroepen filmproducent en filmcomponist dichter bij elkaar. Aan de hand van persoonlijke ervaringen, case studies en te vermijden valkuilen bespreken producenten Peter Bouckaert (Eyeworks) en Annemie Degryse (Lunanime) hoe ze een filmscore budgetteren, terwijl componisten Michelino Bisceglia en Liesa Van der Aa hun licht laten schijnen over wat er komt kijken bij het componeren van een score en hoe dat budget nu precies wordt besteed. Deze talk wordt georganiseerd i.s.m. de Belgian Screen Composers Guild. This panel talk aims to bring the professions of film producer and film composer closer together. Through personal experiences, case studies and pitfalls to avoid, producers Peter Bouckaert (Eyeworks) and Annemie Degryse (Lunanime) discuss how they budget a film score, while composers Michelino Bisceglia and Liesa Van der Aa shed light on what goes into composing a score and how said budget is spent. This talk is organised in collaboration with the Belgian Screen Composers Guild.

Peter Bouckaert

Peter Bouckaert is the managing and creative director of Eyeworks Film & TV Drama. He was deputy director of the Flanders International Film Festival for 10 years before joining Eyeworks, Belgium's leading film production company in 2000. Since then, Peter has produced an impressive number of films and quality drama series among which Ben X, Dossier K., Marina, The Treatment, Double Life, Cordon and many more.

Michelino Bisceglia

Composer and jazz pianist Michelino Bisceglia composed the score for Stijn Coninx’ Marina (2013) for which he won a WSA Public Choice Award. He also orchestrated and conducted the scores for Cafard and Mother’s Instinct, which also won World Soundtrack Awards. His recent

work includes the scores for the Netflix series Thieves of the Wood and the animation biopic Charlotte, which granted him another WSAnomination this year. balancing on narrative and surreal structures where content, image and music are put into one frame. She has collaborated with organisations such as deSingel, Toneelhuis, Kaaitheater, Handelsbeurs Concertzaal, M HKA, Concertgebouw Brugge, Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop Berlin and FC Bergman.

Annemie Degryse

Annemie Degryse has been working in animation as a distributor and producer since she graduated from KASK. She founded Lunanime in 2008 and co-owns the Lumière Group, which includes 5 city cinemas, theatrical distribution, production and a 2D animation studio. Annemie produced titles such as the series Ollie, and Bloomstreet 11, which won the Cristal Award for Best Animated Short in Annecy, and co-produced among others Josep, Funan and Coppelia.

Valerie Dobbelaere - moderator

Valerie Dobbelaere is the founder of Strike A Score, a screen composers agency that both represents Belgian screen composers and promotes screen composers on a European level. She previously coordinated the music projects and film (music) industry activities at Film Fest Gent for over 10 years. Valerie joined Post Bills, a Brussels based press and communication agency specialising in PR for film, TV & music projects for 5 years before creating her own agency.

Liesa Van der Aa

Liesa Van der Aa is a Belgian violinist, singer, composer and actor. Liesa’s work is always made and shown in a multidisciplinary context,

MARK ISHAM RUBEN DE GHESELLE

Mark Isham componeerde memorabele scores voor onder meer Judas and the Black Messiah, The Black Dahlia en Crash. Hij scoorde ook A River Runs Through It, dat zowel een Oscar als een Grammy-nominatie kreeg. Mark Isham heeft het in deze talk over zijn rijke carrière met moderator en collega-componist Ruben De Gheselle. American film composer and jazz artist Mark Isham's outstanding musical voice can be heard in the memorable scores for the numerous films on which he collaborated, such as Judas and the Black Messiah (Shaka King), The Black Dahlia (Brian De Palma) and Crash (Paul Haggis). Mark Isham also scored A River Runs Through It (Robert Redford) which received an Oscar nomination for Best Music and a Grammy nomination for Best Instrumental Composition for a Feature Film. Ruben De Gheselle is known for his intimate, hypnotic and sometimes dark scores for films such as the Cannes-nominated Clara Sola (Nathalie Álvarez Mesén, 2021), A Cops & Robbers Story (Ilinca Calugareanu, 2020) which premiered at DOC NYC, or the Canneserieswinning Lockdown. Ruben also worked on several internationally acclaimed short films including The Passerby (2020) and Beast! (2016) by Pieter Coudyzer and Elena (Birute Sodeikate, 2021). He won various prestigious awards such as the Grand Prix for best music in Marseille and an Ensor in 2022. Last year, he won the Georges Delerue Award at Film Fest Gent for the music of Clara Sola.

Korean Composers

Tijdens het unieke concert Korean Composers staat Koreaanse filmmuziek in de schijnwerpers. Brussels Philharmonic, onder leiding van Maestro Dirk Brossé, brengt muziek van Cho Young-wuk (Oldboy, The Handmaiden), de go-to componist van Park Chan-wook, en Lee Byeong-woo die met Bong Joon-ho werkte aan Mother en The Host. Beide componisten zullen op het concert aanwezig zijn. Ook de muziek van Jung Jae-il voor Parasite en Squid Game zal live worden uitgevoerd. The spotlight will be put on Korean film music in the unique concert Korean Composers. Brussels Philharmonic, conducted by Maestro Dirk Brossé, will perform music by Cho Young-wuk (Oldboy, The Handmaiden), the go-to composer of Park Chan-wook, and Lee Byeong-woo who worked with Bong Joon-ho on Mother and The Host. Dirk Brossé

Dirk Brossé, an internationally acclaimed conductor and composer, is currently Music Director of the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, and Music Director of Film Fest Gent. Dirk Brossé has guest-conducted many top orchestras all over the world and is also an award-winning composer, whose body of work includes scores for cinema, television and stage, such as the Emmy-nominated score for the BBC/HBO series Parade’s End, Daens, Tintin, Ben X, Pauline & Paulette and 14-18. He recently composed the music for the Belgian nature documentary Onze Natuur.

Bruno Coulais

Bruno Coulais' ambitious film music ranges from scores for French blockbusters like

Les rivières pourpres (2001), through epic documentaries like Le peuple migrateur (2001) to folkloric animated films like Wolfwalkers (2020). His big break came in 1996 thanks to his magnificent score for the nature documentary Microcosmos: Le peuple de l'herbe. It earned Coulais his first César and the Georges Delerue Award at Film Fest Gent. He also wrote the scores for the stop-motion film Coraline and for the universally lauded The Secret of Kells (2009) and Song of the Sea (2014).

Nainita Desai

Emmy-nominated and Royal Television Society award winning composer Nainita Desai is also the winner of the World Soundtrack Awards Discovery of the Year 2021. Her recent projects include Oscar nominated, BAFTA and Cannes winning feature documentary For Sama, Sundance and BIFA winning feature The Reason I Jump and nature documentary Untamed Romania. Mark Kermode placed her score for The Reason I Jump in the Top 3 film scores of 2021 with Empire Magazine championing her as one of the '5 film composers to watch out for 2022'.

Robin Broos - moderator

Robin Broos has been sharing his knowledge of film music on radio since 2018, as presenter of the Klara programme The Original Soundtrack. For Brussels Philharmonic, he creates the podcast De Klankband, about film music and music in film. In 2021, his lecture A Sci-Fi Soundtrack on music in science fiction film was awarded the Audience Award at the Razor Reel Flanders Film Festival in Bruges.

Creative Partnerships

Met Creative Partnerships schijnt Film Fest Gent het voetlicht op twee uitzonderlijke samenwerkingen: enerzijds tussen regisseur David Lowery en componist Daniel Hart (p. 8), en anderzijds tussen componist Johnny Jewel, monteur Nico Leunen (ACE) en regisseur Fien Troch (p.6). Journalist Tim Greiving zal beide gesprekken modereren. Film Fest Gent shines the spotlight on two exceptional collaborations: on the one hand between director David Lowery and composer Daniel Hart (p. 8), and on the other hand between composer Johnny Jewel, editor Nico Leunen (ACE) and director Fien Troch (p. 6). He has written program notes for the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Royal Albert Hall, and liner notes for more than one hundred soundtrack albums.

Daarbij vroeg Galperine aan vier filmmakers om beelden te maken bij zijn muziek, die exclusief getoond worden tijdens deze luistersessie. Galperine is aanwezig voor een inleiding en een Q&A. Evgueni Galperine, who, together with his brother Sacha, composed the scores for films such as FFG Explore Award-winner Gagarine, Golden Lion-winner The Happening and the HBO miniseries Scenes of a Marriage, presents his new album Theory of Becoming at Film Fest Gent. For this occasion, Galperine asked four filmmakers to make images to his music, which are exclusively shown during this listening session. Galperine is present for an introduction and a Q&A.

Changing the Face of “The Composer”: Alliance for Women Film Composers

De Alliance for Women Film Composers (AWFC) is opgericht vanuit de nood en het verlangen om de zichtbaarheid van vrouwelijke componisten te vergroten en nieuwe kansen te creëren. Women composers have always been writing and creating music, but they have historically been overlooked and kept invisible. The Alliance for Women Film Composers (AWFC) was founded out of a need and desire to raise visibility and create opportunities for female composers.

Catherine Joy

With a passion for music and collaboration, Catherine Joy is a composer for film, media and live performance. Early in her career she won Best Documentary Score for Gold Balls. More recently she scored the criticallyacclaimed feature Potato Dreams of America. Along with composing, Catherine is the founder and CEO of Joy Music House, a full service score production company and the President for the Alliance for Women Film Composers.

Daniel Hart

Composer and performer Daniel Hart made his feature film debut in 2013 with the critically acclaimed Ain't Them Bodies Saints, which began his collaboration with filmmaker

David Lowery. Over the past decade, he has also scored multiple TV shows, from Fox's The Exorcist, to SMILF, to The Society. Hart has written music for This American Life, and composed the score for S Town. He is also an accomplished musician and played with bands such as St. Vincent, Broken Social Scene and Other Lives.

Nainita Desai

Thomas Mikusz - moderator

In 2011 Thomas Mikusz co-founded White Bear PR, a public relations company, specialising in composers, music supervisors, international film & music festivals, and event management & production. He spearheaded successful award campaigns for artists such as Hildur Gudnadóttir (Joker, Chernobyl), Germaine Franco (Encanto) and Carlos Rafael Rivera (The Queen's Gambit). He serves on the leadership of The Alliance for Women Film Composers, amplifying and supporting the work of women composers.

Film Fest Gent brengt de crème de la crème van de internationale filmmuziekscene opnieuw samen in Gent voor de 22ste World Soundtrack Awards. Brussels Philharmonic, onder leiding van Maestro Dirk Brossé, speelt tijdens de uitreiking van de filmmuziekprijzen een selectie uit de oeuvres van Mark Isham, Bruno Coulais (winnaar van de Lifetime Achievement Award) en van Nainita Desai (winnaar van de Discovery of the Year Award 2021). Film Fest Gent brings the cream of the international film music crop together in Gent again for the 22nd World Soundtrack Awards. Brussels Philharmonic, conducted by maestro Dirk Brossé, will play a selection of works by Mark Isham, Bruno Coulais (winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award) and Nainita Desai (winner of the Discovery of the Year Award 2021) during the presentation of the film music awards.
