Returning to our essence

Film Fest Gent geeft in oktober, al bijna 50 jaar lang, het startschot van het nieuwe filmseizoen. Het festival is hét platform voor de makers om hun nieuwe film te tonen aan het publiek, en voor professionelen, pers en programmatoren om dat nieuws te ontdekken. Maar het festival zet ook in op het samenbrengen en inspireren van alle actoren uit de filmsector.

De voorbije – COVID – jaren waren best pittig. We moesten onze creativiteit vooral inzetten om op te vangen wat niet kon. Met deze editie willen we af van de ballast van wat niet kan of net moet, en gaan we terug naar de essentie, de passie van het filmberoep. Zo lichten we onder meer een aantal Creative Partnerships uit door een podium te geven aan enkele bijzondere filmmakers en componisten die samen hun beste werk leveren.

Maar ook van de vele Talks & Masterclasses die we in deze brochure presenteren, hopen we dat ze onze collega’s in de filmindustrie inspireren, filmstudenten goesting doen krijgen en filmliefhebbers een intrigerende blik achter de schermen bieden. En een aanleiding zijn voor boeiende gesprekken en ontmoetingen in het Film Fest Café.

For almost 50 years, Film Fest Gent has been kicking off the new film season in October. It is the platform for filmmakers to show their new film to the public, and for professionals, press and programmers

to discover them. The past - COVID - years have been quite tough. We mainly had to use our creativity to accommodate what wasn’t possible. With this edition, we want to get rid of this burden and return to the essence: a passion for film. We hope the many Talks & Masterclasses we present in this brochure will inspire our colleagues in the film industry, whet the appetite of film students and offer film lovers an intriguing look behind the scenes. And provide an occasion for fascinating conversations and encounters in the Film Fest Café.

Ook dit jaar zakken heel wat interessante gasten af naar Gent: het perfecte moment om hen een microfoon voor te schotelen. Tijdens de verschillende Director's Talks laten we enkele van de meest intrigerende regisseurs van het moment aan het woord: Céline Sciamma, Cristian Mungiu en Albert Serra. We vertonen telkens een van hun films voor de talk. Tickets voor de combinatie film en Director’s Talk kan je kopen op filmfestival.be of aan de festivalkassa. During the various Director’s Talks, we let some of the most intriguing filmmakers take the stage: Céline Sciamma, Cristian Mungiu and Albert Serra. We will screen one of their films before the talk. Twee voortrekkers van queer cinema ontmoeten elkaar. Céline Sciamma, de Franse regisseur die in 2019 zowat alle cinefiele harten veroverde met haar vurig historisch drama Portrait de la jeune fille en feu, gaat na de vertoning van haar meest recente film in gesprek met Lukas Dhont, die met Close de openingsfilm van FFG2022 levert. Beide cineasten hebben een oeuvre dat op gevoelige wijze seksualiteit, queer zijn en menselijke relaties uit. Sciamma debuteerde in 2007 met Naissance des pieuvres, die speelde in de Un Certain Regard-competitie in Cannes. Samen met Tomboy (2011) en Bande de filles (2014)

In 2019 keerde ze terug uit het Franse kuststadje met de prijs voor beste scenario en de Queer Palm voor Portrait de la jeune fille en feu. Ook Lukas Dhont heeft zich in een mum van tijd ontpopt tot een gereputeerde cineast. Zowel Girl (2018) als Close werden snel omarmd door zowel critici als fans. Two directors of sensitive queer cinema meet. After the screening of her latest feature Petite maman, French director Céline Sciamma will talk to Lukas Dhont, whose sophomore film Close is our opening film. Sciamma is best known for her ardent and heartbreaking 18th-century love story Portrait de la jeune fille en feu. Both filmmakers have made films that brim with sexuality, queerness and the intricacies of human relationships.

Petite Maman

Céline Sciamma laat je kennismaken met de achtjarige Nelly, die na het overlijden van haar grootmoeder mee afreist naar het ouderlijke huis van haar mama Marion. Terwijl haar ouders het huis leegmaken, ontmoet Nelly een meisje van haar leeftijd genaamd ... Marion. Sciamma's vijfde film is een betoverende parabel over herinneringen, kindertijd, familie en vriendschap. Door de ogen van een kind lijkt de wereld altijd een tikkeltje meer magisch. Céline Sciamma introduces eight-year-old Nelly, who travels with her to her mum Marion's childhood home after her grandmother dies. As her parents clear the house, Nelly meets a girl her age called ... Marion. Sciamma's fifth film is an enchanting parable about memories, childhood, family and friendship. Through the eyes of a child, the world always seems a touch more magical.

De Roemeense regisseur Cristian Mungiu is een gewaardeerd filmauteur. Mungiu werd in 2007 met de abortusnachtmerrie 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days de eerste Roemeense Gouden Palm-winnaar. Ook in zijn nieuwste schuwt Mungiu het pessimisme niet. In R.M.N. maakt hij een grimmige schets van een multi-etnisch Transsylvanië waar racisme en xenofobie welig tieren. Romanian director Cristian Mungiu is a reputable filmauteur who grew up in a post-communist Romania and is part of a generation of filmmakers that captures the fears of a society disillusioned by broken promises. With abortion drama 4 Month, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007), Mungiu became the first Romanian Palme d’Or winner. His latest film, R.M.N., is a grim portrait of a multi-ethnic community in Transsylvania where racism and xenophobia reign.

Crisis in Roemenië! Cristian Mungiu’s jongste film, R.M.N., speelt zich af in een vlek in Transsylvanië waar mensen van verschillende etniciteiten al decennia vredig samenwonen. Maar wanneer een groep Sri Lankaanse arbeiders in het dorp neerstrijkt, lijkt het racisme uit alle poriën van de inwoners te gutsen. Mungiu verweeft verschillende verhaallijnen tot een drama dat veel stof tot nadenken biedt, zoals over de onderlinge verhoudingen in de EU. Crisis in Romania! Cristian Mungiu’s latest film, R.M.N., is set in a small town in Transylvania where people of different ethnicities have lived together peacefully for decades. But when a group of Sri Lankan workers settles in the village, racism seems to gush out of every pore of the inhabitants.

De Catalaanse cineast Albert Serra staat te boek als een van meest radicale filmmakers in de hedendaagse cinema. Zijn films provoceren, betoveren, dagen uit, maar zijn bovenal kunststukjes beïnvloed door Europese mythes, geschiedenis en literatuur. In 2013 won hij het Gouden Luipaard in Locarno voor Història de la meva mort. Voor het controversiële Liberté (2019) kreeg hij de Prix spécial du jury in de Un Certain Regard-competitie in Cannes. Met zijn nieuwste, Pacifiction, streed hij voor het eerst mee voor de Gouden Palm. Catalan director Albert Serra is one of the most radical filmmakers of contemporary cinema. Provocative, bewitching, and challenging, his films are above all pure cinema, inspired by European myths, history and literature. Pacifiction was his first film competing for the Palme d’Or.

Pacifiction volgt de Franse bureaucraat De Roller op een Frans-Polynesisch eiland. De man, steeds opgedirkt in een wit zomerpak, lult zich charmant door elk gesprek. De Roller profileert zich als een politicus pur sang die elk babbeltje als een krachtmeting of performance opvat. De eilandbewoners respecteren hem en zijn leven oogt zorgeloos. Maar de mysterieuze aanwezigheid van een troep mariniers en de halsstarrige houding van een inheemse activist brengen daar verandering in. En houdt er zich voor de kust een onderzeeër verborgen? Pacifiction follows French bureaucrat De Roller on a French Polynesian island. The man, always dressed up in a white summer suit, charmingly lobs his way through every conversation. The islanders respect him and his life looks carefree. But the mysterious presence of a troop of marines changes all that.

Het zijn vaak net de creatieve samenwerkingen tussen componisten en filmmakers die tot de meest intrigerende oeuvres leiden. Met Creative Partnerships schijnen we het voetlicht op twee uitzonderlijke samenwerkingen. Journalist Tim Greiving (NPR, LA Times, The Washington Post) gaat in gesprek met regisseur David Lowery en componist Daniel Hart, en met componist Johnny Jewel, monteur Nico Leunen (ACE) en regisseur Fien Troch. Mis ook zeker de Lowery/Hart-retrospectieve niet. De Creative Partnership-talks zijn onderdeel van de WSA Film Music Days. Lees meer op p. 20. Dat Belgiës meest gevraagde monteur ook in Amerika bekendstaat als de redder van stroeve montages is ondertussen geen nieuws meer. Nico Leunen werkte samen met Brad Pitt aan Ad Astra (James Gray, 2019) en met Ryan Gosling voor zijn regiedebuut Lost River (2015), met een score van niemand minder dan Chromatics-frontman Johnny Jewel. Belgium's most sought-after editor worked with Brad Pitt on Ad Astra (James Gray, 2019) and Ryan Gosling called on Leunen for his directorial debut Lost River (2015), which was scored by none other than Chromatics frontman Johnny Jewel. In 2021, he became the first Belgian editor admitted to American Cinema Editors (ACE).

Johnny Jewel begon zijn carrière als filmcomponist met de score voor Bronson (2008) van Nicolas Winding Refn, met wie hij opnieuw samenwerkte voor Drive (2011). Met zijn bands Desire en Chromatics zorgde hij voor de kenmerkende, nostalgische eighties electronica-sound van de film. Na zijn werk voor Lost River zette hij zich aan zijn volgende project: Home van Fien Troch, waarvoor hij in 2016 op FFG de Georges Delerue Award won.

Johnny Jewel began his career as a film composer with the score for Bronson (2008) by Nicolas Winding Refn, with whom he collaborated again for the acclaimed score of Drive (2011). With his bands Desire and Chromatics, he set the tone for the film's nostalgic eighties electronica sound. After his work on Lost River, he moved on to his next project: Fien Troch's Home, for which Jewel won the Georges Delerue Award at Film Fest Gent in 2016.

In 2016 ontving Fien Troch een Special Mention van de Film Fest Gent-jongerenjury voor Home, een onderscheiding die de gevoelige en rake portrettering van de tieners in haar film extra in de verf zet. De voor Jewel vrij minimalistische soundtrack met sinistere soundscapes en duistere synths onderschrijft de nihilistische kant van deze film over onbegrip en miscommunicatie. Bovendien werd de film gemonteerd door Trochs vaste monteur, Nico Leunen. Home vormt zo het sluitstuk op het gezamenlijke oeuvre van deze talenten.

In 2016, Fien Troch received a Special Mention from the Film Fest Gent youth jury for Home. The score, which is fairly minimalist for Jewel fits perfectly with the nihilistic side of this film. Moreover, the film was edited by Nico Leunen. Home thus serves as the crown jewel to the collective oeuvre of these talents.

Sinds Lowery’s debuut St. Nick (2009) vormen hij en Hart een onafscheidelijk duo. Film en muziek zijn in hun projecten zo intrinsiek met elkaar verweven dat je Lowery’s werk niet voor de geest kan halen zonder Harts soundtrack te horen. Wie herinnert zich immers niet de Dark Rooms-song “I Get Overwhelmed” uit A Ghost Story (2017). Of Lowery’s film nu een tedere exploratie is van de fragiliteit van een mensenleven of een eigenzinnig ridderepos, Hart weet altijd de perfecte sound te vinden. De charmante bankovervaller (Robert Redford) in The Old Man & The Gun (2018) lijkt uit een ander tijdperk te stammen, een gevoel dat versterkt wordt door Harts nostalgische score. Dankzij een blokfluitkwartet en de nyckelharpa klinkt de muziek in The Green Knight (2021) zowel vertrouwd middeleeuws als bevreemdend hedendaags.

Since working together on Lowery's feature debut St. Nick in 2009, he and Hart are an inseparable duo. Film and music are so intrinsically intertwined in their projects that it is impossible to imagine Lowery's work without hearing Hart's soundtrack. Whether Lowery's film is an intimate exploration of the fragility of human life or an ambitious fantasy epic, Hart always manages to find the perfect sound. The charming bank robber (Robert Redford) in The Old Man & The Gun (2018) seems to be from another era, a feeling reinforced by Hart's nostalgic score. Thanks to a recorder quartet and the nyckelharpa, the music in The Green Knight (2021) sounds both recognisably medieval and alienatingly contemporary.

uit de jaren '70 tot een warm avontuur over de band tussen een verwilderd kind en de bosdraak die over hem waakt. Lowery reworked the family film of the 1970s into a wholesome adventure about the bond between a feral child and the forest dragon who watches over him.

A Ghost Story (2017)

Lowery’s serene vertelling is gehuld in lange takes en een vierkant beeldformaat. Toekomst en verleden kruisen elkaar stilzwijgend, zoals de geest en zijn geliefde. Lowery's serene narrative is cloaked in long takes and a square aspect ratio. Future and past silently intersect, like the ghost and his lover.

Ook liefhebbers van series komen aan hun trekken op Film Fest Gent. Naar aanleiding van de premières van Roomies en 1985 organiseert de Scenaristengilde i.s.m. Film Fest Gent een Serial Day met de scenaristen en regisseurs van deze gloednieuwe series. Op wo 12.10 en do 13.10 kan je de screening van Roomies meepikken en op vr 14.10 en zo 16.10 de vertoning van 1985.

Jean-Luc Godard, de legendarische regisseur achter iconische films als À bout de souffle (1960), Le mépris (1963) en Pierrot le fou (1965) is op 91-jarige leeftijd overleden. Het belang van Jean-Luc Godard als rebellerende iconoclast kan moeilijk overschat worden. Samen met François Truffaut stond hij aan de wieg van de Franse nouvelle vague, een golf die een cesuur betekende in de filmgeschiedenis. Meer dan een filmmaker, was hij ook een militant, een intellectueel en iemand die zijn ganse leven dweepte met alternatieve politieke stromingen. Maar bovenal vertelde hij zijn waarheidcinema - in 24 frames per seconde. Film Fest Gent biedt de legendarische regisseur Jean-Luc Godard een welgemeende adieu. Monsieur le cinéma is no more. Jean-Luc Godard, the legendary director behind iconic films such as À bout de souffle (1960), Le mépris (1963) and Pierrot le fou (1965) has died at the age of 91. Jean-Luc Godard's importance as a rebellious iconoclast can hardly be overestimated. Together with François Truffaut, he was at the cradle of the French nouvelle vague. More than a filmmaker, he was also a militant and an intellectual. But above all, he told his truth - cinema - in 24 frames per second. Film Fest Gent bids adieu to legendary director Jean-Luc Godard by screening two new films about him: À vendredi, Robinson (Mitra Farahani) en Godard seul le cinéma (Cyril Leuthy). After the screenings, Classics curator Patrick Duynslaegher and film historian Anke Brouwers will talk about the life and work of Godard.

Ergens in de jaren '60 zouden Jean-Luc Godard en de Iraanse regisseur Ebrahim Golestan elkaar op een festival ontmoeten. Dat is misgelopen en de heren zijn elkaar nooit lijfelijk tegengekomen. Op instigatie van documentairemaker Mitra Farahani zijn ze vorig decennium begonnen met een correspondentie. Farahani filmde deze uitwisseling. Het resultaat is even ongrijpbaar als een Godard-film. Somewhere in the 1960s, Jean Luc-Godard and the Iranian director Ebrahim Golestan were supposed to meet at a festival. It didn't work out and they never met physically. They started a correspondence last decade. The result is as elusive as a Godard film.

"He did everything. And the opposite of it too." Only a mysterious bon mot can describe Jean-Luc Godard, the master of enigmatic one-liners. Documentary filmmaker Cyril Leuthy clearly explains the erratic course of JLG since his 1960 nouvelle vague debut À bout de souffle: pioneering iconoclast, creator of radical left-wing cinematic pamphlets, video pioneer and true master of cinema.

Deze documentaire is een must voor cinefielen. Niet alleen steek je heel wat op van deze verkenning van alle mogelijke aspecten van het bewaren en restaureren van film, het is ook een liefdevolle collage die naar de essentie puurt van de predigitale cinema, toen film nog niet gedematerialiseerd was, maar o zo tastbaar en kwetsbaar. Het is een litanie van pellicule die in vuur en vlam staat, filmspoelen die tot stof vergaan, speurtochten naar ontbrekende shots en sequenties, met monnikengeduld opgepoetste klassiekers en verloren gewaande curiositeiten. Not only will you learn from this exploration of all possible aspects of preserving and restoring film, it is also a loving collage that peeks at the essence of pre-digital cinema, when film was not yet dematerialised but oh so tangible and fragile. Luc Gulinck is a jurist specialising in entertainment law. Peter Bouckaert

Peter Bouckaert is the managing and creative director of Eyeworks Film & TV Drama. He was deputy director of the Flanders International Film Festival for 10 years before joining Eyeworks, Belgium's leading film production company in 2000. Since then, Peter has produced an impressive number of films and quality drama series among which Ben X, Dossier K., Marina, The Treatment, Double Life, Cordon and many more.

Michelino Bisceglia

Composer and jazz pianist Michelino Bisceglia composed the score for Stijn Coninx’ Marina (2013) for which he won a WSA Public Choice Award. He also orchestrated and conducted the scores for Cafard and Mother’s Instinct, which also won World Soundtrack Awards. His recent

work includes the scores for the Netflix series

Thieves of the Wood and the animation biopic Charlotte, which granted him another WSAnomination this year.

Annemie Degryse

Annemie Degryse has been working in animation as a distributor and producer since she graduated from KASK. She founded Lunanime in 2008 and co-owns the Lumière Group, which includes 5 city cinemas, theatrical distribution, production and a 2D animation studio. Annemie produced titles such as the series Ollie, and Bloomstreet 11, which won the Cristal Award for Best Animated Short in Annecy, and co-produced among others Josep, Funan and Coppelia.

Valerie Dobbelaere - moderator

Valerie Dobbelaere is the founder of Strike A Score, a screen composers agency that both represents Belgian screen composers and promotes screen composers on a European level. She previously coordinated the music projects and film (music) industry activities at Film Fest Gent for over 10 years. Valerie joined Post Bills, a Brussels based press and communication agency specialising in PR for film, TV & music projects for 5 years before creating her own agency.

American film composer and jazz artist Mark Isham's outstanding musical voice can be heard in the memorable scores for the numerous films on which he collaborated, such as Judas and the Black Messiah (Shaka King), The Black Dahlia (Brian De Palma) and Crash (Paul Haggis). Mark Isham also scored A River Runs Through It (Robert Redford) which received an Oscar nomination for Best Music and a Grammy nomination for Best Instrumental Composition for a Feature Film. Tijdens het unieke concert Korean Composers staat Koreaanse filmmuziek in de schijnwerpers. Brussels Philharmonic, onder leiding van Maestro Dirk Brossé, brengt muziek van Cho Young-wuk (Oldboy, The Handmaiden), de go-to componist van Park Chan-wook, en Lee Byeong-woo die met Bong Joon-ho werkte aan Mother en The Host. Beide componisten zullen op het concert aanwezig zijn. Ook de muziek van Jung Jae-il voor Parasite en Squid Game zal live worden uitgevoerd.

The spotlight will be put on Korean film music in the unique concert Korean Composers. Dirk Brossé

Dirk Brossé, an internationally acclaimed conductor and composer, is currently Music Director of the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, and Music Director of Film Fest Gent. Dirk Brossé has guest-conducted many top orchestras all over the world and is also an award-winning composer, whose body of work includes scores for cinema, television and stage, such as the Emmy-nominated score for the BBC/HBO series Parade’s End, Daens, Tintin, Ben X, Pauline & Paulette and 14-18. He recently composed the music for the Belgian nature documentary Onze Natuur.

Bruno Coulais

Bruno Coulais' ambitious film music ranges from scores for French blockbusters like

Les rivières pourpres (2001), through epic documentaries like Le peuple migrateur (2001) to folkloric animated films like Wolfwalkers (2020). His big break came in 1996 thanks to his magnificent score for the nature documentary Microcosmos: Le peuple de l'herbe. It earned Coulais his first César and the Georges Delerue Award at Film Fest Gent. He also wrote the scores for the stop-motion film Coraline and for the universally lauded The Secret of Kells (2009) and Song of the Sea (2014).

Robin Broos - moderator

Robin Broos has been sharing his knowledge of film music on radio since 2018, as presenter of the Klara programme The Original Soundtrack. For Brussels Philharmonic, he creates the podcast De Klankband, about film music and music in film. In 2021, his lecture A Sci-Fi Soundtrack on music in science fiction film was awarded the Audience Award at the Razor Reel Flanders Film Festival in Bruges.

Nainita Desai

Emmy-nominated and Royal Television Society award winning composer Nainita Desai is also the winner of the World Soundtrack Awards Discovery of the Year 2021. Her recent projects include Oscar nominated, BAFTA and Cannes winning feature documentary For Sama, Sundance and BIFA winning feature The Reason I Jump and nature documentary Untamed Romania. Mark Kermode placed her score for The Reason I Jump in the Top 3 film scores of 2021 with Empire Magazine championing her as one of the '5 film composers to watch out for 2022'.

The Alliance for Women Film Composers (AWFC) was founded out of a need and desire to raise visibility and create opportunities for female composers.

Catherine Joy

With a passion for music and collaboration, Catherine Joy is a composer for film, media and live performance. Early in her career she won Best Documentary Score for Gold Balls. More recently she scored the criticallyacclaimed feature Potato Dreams of America Along with composing, Catherine is the founder and CEO of Joy Music House, a full service score production company and the President for the Alliance for Women Film Composers.

Daniel Hart

Composer and performer Daniel Hart made his feature film debut in 2013 with the critically acclaimed Ain't Them Bodies Saints, which began his collaboration with filmmaker

David Lowery. Over the past decade, he has also scored multiple TV shows, from Fox's The Exorcist, to SMILF, to The Society. Hart has written music for This American Life, and composed the score for S Town. He is also an accomplished musician and played with bands such as St. Vincent, Broken Social Scene and Other Lives.

Film Fest Gent brengt de crème de la crème van de internationale filmmuziekscene opnieuw samen in Gent voor de 22ste World Soundtrack Awards. Brussels Philharmonic, onder leiding van Maestro Dirk Brossé, speelt tijdens de uitreiking van de filmmuziekprijzen een selectie uit de oeuvres van Mark Isham, Bruno Coulais (winnaar van de Lifetime Achievement Award) en van Nainita Desai (winnaar van de Discovery of the Year Award 2021).

Film Fest Gent brings the cream of the international film music crop together in Gent again for the 22nd World Soundtrack Awards. Brussels Philharmonic, conducted by maestro Dirk Brossé, will play a selection of works by Mark Isham, Bruno Coulais (winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award) and Nainita Desai (winner of the Discovery of the Year Award 2021) during the presentation of the film music awards.
