First of all, I want to congratulate all our nominees. A lot of established composers and WSA favourites are nominated for a World Soundtrack Award yet again. Who will redeem their nomination will remain secret for at least a few more moments. We are, however, equally honoured to welcome some relative newcomers to the field of composition for film in our impressive collection of nominees. I can say without hesitation that a lot of interesting and exciting film music was composed this past year.

In the spirit of further attempting to make a career in composing for film more accessible, we have already announced one award winner this year. The Alliance for Women Film Composers has received the WSA Industry Award, which we hope will lower the threshold for female composers to enter the world of film music and the World Soundtrack Academy.

And of course, we also get to listen to some wonderful film music tonight, by our guest of honour Mark Isham (p. 5 ) , Lifetime Achievement Award winner Bruno Coulais (p. 6) and Discovery of the Year 2021 Nainita Desai (p. 7) , who returns as a Public Choice Award nominee, performed by Brussels Philharmonic conducted by Dirk Brossé. We are extremely grateful to receive these three world-renowned composers and this fantastic orchestra at Music Centre De Bijloke, a true

showpiece of the medieval heritage of Ghent. There is no better place for a lovely evening of enchanting film music.

The music Brussels Philharmonic will perform tonight was composed by our three special guests. Composer and jazz artist Mark Isham is our guest of honour. Not only will you enjoy some of the most wonderful pieces from his repertoire, he will also take the stage himself. Bruno Coulais will receive this year’s World Soundtrack Lifetime Achievement Award for his impressive career, as you will be able to judge for yourself. And furthermore, Brussels Philharmonic will perform the music of last year’s Discovery of the Year winner, which gives us the pleasure to listen to the work of Nainita Desai, who returns this year as Public Choice Award nominee.

Mark Isham

American composer and jazz artist

Mark Isham has been a well-respected name in the upper echelons of Hollywood for decades. His inimitable scores – influenced by jazz and electronic music – have earned him accolades including Grammy and Emmy Awards, and Oscar and Golden Globe nominations.

Born in New York and a student of piano and violin, Mark Isham fell in love with the trumpet. The composer has built an impressive career, collaborating with jazz legends as Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Bobby McFerrin, and filmmakers such as Robert Altman, Werner Herzog, Irwin Winkler, William Friedkin, Paul Haggis, Sidney Lumet, Alan Rudolph, Gavin O’Connor, Jodie Foster and Kathryn Bigelow.

Bruno Coulais

Lifetime Achievement Award

French composer Bruno Coulais has steadily built an impressive career in film music since the late seventies with his highly recognisable lyrical and imaginative scores, which often give away his taste for opera and the human voice. 1996 proved to be a turning point in his career, receiving universal acclaim for his score for the unique nature documentary Microcosmos, produced by Jacques Perrin, with whom Coulais frequently collaborated. They worked together on the hit film Les choristes (2005) for which Coulais and director Christophe Barratier received an Oscar nomination for Best Song.

In 2009, Coulais scored his first major English-language features. He wrote the music for the stopmotion film Coraline by Henry Selick (Coulais’ first American studio film) and he started

Nainita Desai

Discovery of the Year

2021

Winner of the World Soundtrack Discovery of the Year Award 2021, Nainita Desai has rapidly become one of the most indemand composers for drama and documentary alike after being named Breakthrough Brit at the 2016 BAFTAs and dazzling worldwide audiences with her restrained score of the Oscarnominated For Sama (2019). Born and raised in London to Indian parents, Desai already mastered five instruments as a child and went on to study mathematics, music technology and sound design. She began her career as a sound designer, working on films for Bertolucci and Herzog, but moved on to composing for screen. Desai is quickly building a distinctive oeuvre, with scores for - among others - Sundance favourite The Reason I Jump, BAFTA-nominated documentary American Murder, ITV series The Tower, as well as Netflix hit 14 Peaks and video game Telling Lies

About the Nominees

Film Fest Gent and the World Soundtrack Academy proudly reveal the nominations for the World Soundtrack Awards 2022. Among the nominees are three composers who scored nominations in two different categories: Nicholas Britell, Daniel Hart and last year’s Film Composer of the Year Daniel Pemberton. In a sign of the increasing importance and popularity of television, the song “Strange Game” from the HBO series Slow Horses is the first ever song from a television series nominated for Best Original Song, since they were first made eligible in 2021. And after last year’s hiatus, the Award for Best Original Score for a Belgian Production celebrates its comeback. The Academy has already announced one winner as well: this year's WSA Industry Award goes to the Alliance for Women Film Composers.

The Composition Contest

Every year, the World Soundtrack Academy offers young, international screen composers the chance to participate in the WSA Film Music Composition Contest. The participants are invited to write a score for an excerpt from a film chosen by Film Fest Gent. A professional jury consisting of Dirk Brossé (Jury President - Music Director Film Fest Gent, conductor), Teodora Ana Mihai (director), Frédéric Vercheval (composer) and Patrick Duynslaegher (Classics Curator Film Fest Gent, journalist) selected three finalists: Giacomo Rita, John Konsolakis and Robert Wallace. At the World Soundtrack Awards Ceremony & Concert, they will find out who wins the Sabam Award for Best Original Composition by a Young Composer, worth €2.500.

This year, young screen composers under the age of 36 were invited to write a score for a scene from Nosferatu, Murnau's timeless classic which celebrates its 100th birthday this year. For a century now, vampire Count Orlok sows fear among everyone who beholds this German Expressionist adaptation of the wellknown story of Count Dracula, while he chases and startles people, projecting that iconic shadow of his long fingers and bald head onto the walls. The chosen excerpt shows Orlok on a ship haunting yet another victim by arising from his coffin. The clip offers opportunities for sound effects and the musical expression of fear and horror.

Nominees

Sabam Award for Best Original Composition by a Young Composer

Giacomo Rita

Born in Macerata, Italy, Giacomo Rita got more acquainted with music at the age of fifteen, when he started playing the electric guitar, studying music, and composing his first pieces. He developed an interest in film and film music, and obtained a Master’s Degree in Cinema, Television and Multimedia Production at the University of Bologna. In 2017, he won the soundtrack category of Premio Carlo Gargioni. In 2020, he attended the Master of Fine Arts in Music for Motion Pictures and Contemporary Media at the Film Scoring Academy of Europe (Irish American University). Currently Giacomo is working on his first videogame soundtrack.

John Konsolakis

John Konsolakis’ involvement in music started from a young age as a clarinettist, and quickly expanded to include music composition and production. In the two years prior to moving to Edinburgh to study Composition and Performance, John was selected as the Winner of the International Animated Film Music Competition. He was selected by the University of Edinburgh as the Runner-Up of the Tovey Memorial Prize in 2018 and 2021 (for performance and composition respectively). Having performed with orchestras as both a principal clarinettist and guest soloist since 2012, John has honed his musical skills and possesses a great love and knowledge of orchestral writing and playing that he utilises in his compositions.

Robert Wallace

Robert Wallace was born in Washington DC and was raised a classical pianist from age five. Robert’s career has included multiple national and international awards for piano performance and composition, including performing twice at Carnegie Hall and at Vienna’s Ehrbar Hall. After completing high school in South Africa, he graduated from Berklee College of Music in May of 2020, magna cum laude, with focus on Film Scoring, Conducting, and Jazz Composition. Now living in Los Angeles, he works under the multi award-winning Michael Abels. Robert has over two and a half hours of music found in projects like Allen V. Farrow, Nightbooks, and Beauty and Breaking

Karl Frid - Pleasure

A talented and extremely versatile musician, Karl (often along with his brother Pär) has been composing and performing music for film and television since 2011. To help reinforce the themes and narrative in Pleasure, Frid turned to an unexpected dynamic duo — sacred opera and hip-hop.

Eiko Ishibashi - Drive My Car

Eiko Ishibashi is a multi-instrumentalist whose work ranges from acclaimed singer-songwriter albums to scores for film and television to improvised music settings. She also composed the music for the 2019 anime Blade of the Immortal.

Son Lux - Everything Everywhere All at Once

Son Lux is a geographically and culturally diverse band, with Rafiq Bhatia, Ian Chang, and Ryan Lott each bringing their unique sonic approach to create an otherworldly whole. The full score album for Everything Everywhere features collaborations with Mitski, David Byrne, Randy Newman and Moses Sumney, among others.

Maurizio Malagnini - Coppelia

The Italian-born Malagnini's first musical love was Italian opera, especially the lyrical melodies of Rossini and Puccini. Over the past five years, the international award-winning composer has distinguished himself by bringing elegant melodies and cinematic vision to numerous productions.

Isobel Waller-Bridge - Munich: The Edge of War

Isobel Waller-Bridge is a British composer for film, television, and theatre, and is also known for her electronic music and contemporary classical music. She has scored projects such as Fleabag, created by her sister Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Autumn de Wilde’s Emma

Best Original Score for a Belgian Production

Inexorable - Vincent Cahay

After his studies in dramatic art at the Conservatoire de Liège, Vincent Cahay acted in various theatrical productions. In the 2000s, in parallel with his acting activities, he began to compose music for the stage and the cinema.

Nowhere - Demusmaker

Demusmaker (real name Blaise Delafosse) composes and produces music for cinema and television. His brother Jérome Delafosse, director and adventurer, entrusted him with the music of numerous ambitious and innovative documentaries.

SpaceBoy - The Penelopes

The Penelopes are an indie pop band from Paris, consisting of Axel Basquiat and Vincent T. The Penelopes often appear at the Cannes Film Festival and have provided music for fashion brands such as Prada and agnès b.

14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible - Nainita Desai

Born and raised in London to Indian parents, Desai already mastered 5 instruments in childhood. Winner of the World Soundtrack Discovery of the Year Award 2021, Nainita Desai has rapidly become one of the most in-demand composers for drama and documentary alike.

Charlotte - Michelino Bisceglia Award-winning composer, conductor, and pianist Michelino Bisceglia was born in Genk, Belgium to a family of Italian origin. In 2014, Michelino Bisceglia won the WSA Public Choice Award for the score of Marina.

Gunpowder Milkshake - Frank Ilfman Frank Ilfman worked on his first TV production when he was just 17 years old and since then has scored more than 40 films and numerous TV shows. He is part of the European Film Academy and The British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild - Batu Sener Composer Batu Sener is working on some of the most exciting animation, action and sci-fi projects in Hollywood. He's been working alongside Oscar-nominated composer John Powell at 5 Cat Studios since he moved to Los Angeles.

The King’s Daughter - Joseph Metcalfe, John Coda, Grant Kirkhope Joseph Metcalfe, having taught himself the piano from the age of 4, began composing in his early childhood. While in his teens he wrote several award-winning musicals.

John Coda is an award winning composer, songwriter and music artist. He composed the theme songs and music for hit Even Stevens and That’s So Raven

Grant Kirkhope took up the trumpet at age 6. He scored the game Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, and is the only western composer to work directly with Nintendo on a Mario game.

Television Composer of the Year

Nicholas Britell – Succession (Season 3) Academy Award-nominated composer and pianist Nicholas Britell is known for his work with writer-directors Barry Jenkins and Adam McKay. Britell received multiple awards at the WSA: Discovery of the Year 2017, Film Composer of the Year 2019, TV Composer of the Year 2020 and Best Original Song in 2021.

Natalie Holt & John Williams – Obi-Wan Kenobi

Natalie Holt is a multi-award-winning British composer, known for her work on Marvel Studios' Loki and the acclaimed Lucasfilm series ObiWan Kenobi.

As one of the best known, awarded, and financially successful composers in US history, John Williams proves himself to be "America's composer" time and again.

Jung Jae-il – Squid Game Jung Jae-il is well-known for his achievements in the crossover between traditional Korean music and other music genres. He is the composer and music director of the Oscar-winning Parasite, directed by Bong Joon-ho.

Hesham Nazih – Moon Knight

Hesham Nazih is an Egyptian composer known for his distinguished style that interweaves authentic melodies with contemporary music. At Cairo International Film Festival he received the honorary Faten Hamama Excellence Award.

Theodore Shapiro – Severance

Theodore Shapiro is an American film composer from Washington D.C., known for composing various films such as Jennifer's Body, Old School, Safe Men, Idiocracy, 13 Going on 30, Girlfight and The Devil Wears Prada.

Cristobal Tapia de Veer – The White Lotus

Multiple award winning Cristobal Tapia de Veer is a Chilean born, classically trained musician, producer, arranger, multi-instrumentalist and award-winning composer for film & TV based in Montreal, Canada.

Germaine Franco – Encanto

Germaine Franco is the first woman to score a Disney animated feature film. Franco serves on the Advisory Board for Women In Media. In 2018, Univision celebrated her work as one of "15 Latinas Who Are Changing The World As We Know It".

Jonny Greenwood – The Power of the Dog, Spencer Jonny Greenwood is an English musician and composer. He is the lead guitarist and keyboardist of the alternative rock band Radiohead, and has written numerous film scores, such as Phantom Thread (2017) and There Will Be Blood (2007).

Daniel Hart – The Green Knight, The Last Letter from Your Lover

Daniel Hart is a composer and performer based in Los Angeles. In 2009, he worked with David Lowery on his debut St. Nick. Since then, Hart has composed the music for all of Lowery's films, such as Ain't Them Bodies Saints and The Green Knight.

Alberto Iglesias – Parallel Mothers

Alberto Iglesias Fernández-Berridi is a Spanish composer. He often works with Pedro Almodóvar and has been nominated for an Academy Award for his scores for The Constant Gardener, The Kite Runner, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Madres paralelas.

Daniel Pemberton – The Rescue, Being the Ricardos, The Bad Guys, Brian and Charles Daniel Pemberton has been nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe, and has won an Emmy for Rising Phoenix. He has worked with directors such as Guy Ritchie, Danny Boyle and Ridley Scott. Pemberton won the WSA Discovery of the Year 2014 and the WSA Film Composer of the Year 2021.

Hans Zimmer – Dune, No Time to Die, The Survivor

German-born composer Hans Zimmer is recognized as one of Hollywood's most innovative musical talents. He has won Academy Awards for his scores for The Lion King and Dune, and a World Soundtrack Award for Inception.

About the Performance

For an award ceremony and concert that honours the crème de la crème of world-renowned composers and songwriters it is only fitting we invite a world-renowned orchestra and conductor to do their music justice. The musicians of Brussels Philharmonic and their conductor, Maestro Dirk Brossé are more than up to the task. Exclusively for this concert, composer Mark Isham will perform the trumpet solos himself, Bruno Coulais's scores will be accompanied by the A Filetta choir, and other talented soloists will take the stage.

Dirk Brossé

MUSIC DIRECTOR, CONDUCTOR

Dirk Brossé, an internationally acclaimed conductor and award winning composer, is currently Music Director of Film Fest Gent. He has guest-conducted many top orchestras, all over the world, among them, the London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic, Vancouver Opera and Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. In 2008 he made his first appearance at the Royal Albert Hall in London, conducting the London Symphony Orchestra. In 2016 he made his debut at the Carnegie Hall, New York.

Maestro Brossé is a highly-regarded, award-winning composer, whose body of some work includes concerti, oratorios, lieder, chamber music and symphonic pieces, as well as scores for cinema, television and stage, such as the Emmynominated score for the BBC/HBO series, Parade’s End. Other scores include Prince of Africa, Daens, Tintin, Rembrandt, Ben X, Pauline & Paulette, 14-18 and Onze Natuur.

Maestro Brossé has made more than 100 CD recordings and has collaborated with world-class artists such as John Williams, Toots Thielemans, Gabriel Yared and Hans Zimmer. He is a versatile and creative performer with a keen interest in cinematic music; he is an early advocate of bringing movie scores to orchestral venues. He was chosen by John Williams to conduct the Star Wars in Concert World Tour in 2009, the first world tour of its kind.

Brussels Philharmonic

Otto Derolez

That is the firm belief of the Brussels Philharmonic. As a symphony orchestra founded in 1935 under the auspices of the Belgian public broadcaster, unveiling the symphonic world as best we can is deep in our DNA. By innovating while maintaining full respect for the value of the past, we keep the symphonic music of the past, present and future relevant and inspiring – for ourselves and all of society. We do this from the historic Studio 4 at Flagey in Brussels, together with our music director Kazushi Ono: he shares our open and adventurous spirit and our rock-solid belief in the need for cross-fertilization between art, life and society.

The orchestra’s international reputation comes to the fore in its specialisation in recording soundtracks (including the Oscar-winning music for The Artist), the many successful recordings for labels such as Deutsche Grammophon, and the ambitious projects on prestigious stages around the world (Carnegie Hall, New York, Philharmonie de Paris, Musikverein Wien, Grosses Festspielhaus Salzburg, Cadogan Hall, London).

SOLOIST

Otto Derolez has been the concertmaster of Brussels Philharmonic since 1999. He is considered one of the leading violinists of Belgium, and as of 2012 been Faculty Professor at YOA Orchestra of the Americas, coaching young musicians all over the world. Otto made his debut with the Brussels Philharmonic in 1999, with Richard Strauss's Ein Heldenleben

As a soloist, he has performed in prestigious concert halls all over the world, including the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Birmingham Symphony Hall, Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall, Festival Hall in Osaka, and Cité de la Musique in Paris, just to name a few. An active chamber musician, he has been a member of the Prometheus Ensemble since 1992. With this ensemble he recorded Schubert's Octet and Trout Quintet, Stravinsky's l'Histoire du Solda, Schoenberg's First Chamber Symphony and Transfigured Night.

Soloists

KAREL STEYLAERTS Cello

Karel Steylaerts studied cello at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels in the class of Carlo Schmitz and at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne with Maria Kliegel. In 1990, he was a laureate of the Tenuto Competition. He was a member of the Tröndlin Piano Forte Trio, with whom he released several critically acclaimed recordings. In 2006, together with violinist Shirly Laub and violist Tony Nys, Steylaerts founded TrioFenix, with whom he is regularly invited to perform at many national and international festivals. Their recordings of Beethoven's works were highly praised by both press and audience. Sinds 2008, Steylaerts is the cello principal at Brussels Philharmonic. She recently sang the Queen of the Night from Die Zauberflöte in a production by CloseOpera and the role of Nadia in Léhar’s La veuve joyeuse with the Brussels Philharmonic conducted by Hervé Niquet. She is much in demand as a concert soloist, with performances in Belgium and abroad. A FILETTA Choir

A Filetta’s music is a journey. It could be said that it is a polyphonic and vocal proposal which is challenging, audacious and contemporary, even though coming from a powerful oral tradition. The singers gladly confess that “the encounter” is written in their musical DNA. They have never wanted to limit this journey to the perimeter of their roots: encouraged by the tradition they inherited from, they quickly opened to others - other territories, other disciplines, other artists. Sacred music stands alongside profane songs with multiple influences, film scores with Bruno Coulais, creations for Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s choreographies, choruses for a Greek tragedy or pieces from a requiem requested by the Saint-Denis Festival.

MÉLISSA ZERBIB (mezzo-)soprano

Mélissa Zerbib discovered music through learning the piano at the age of 4 and the cello at the age of 6 at the Nice Conservatory of Music. At the age of 14, she joined the ORFEO youth choir with which she created operas for children by Jon Appleton and Bruno Coulais. Later, she joined the ensemble of the University of Nice with which she made her first steps as a soloist in Bernstein's Mass. As a soprano who can also sing mezzo roles, she joined the University's Opéra Atelier, performing the roles of Juno, Hippolyta, la baronne de Gondremarck and others. In May 2021, she obtained her Master's degree in classical voice interpretation from the University of Montreal. Since 2007, she has been singing regularly under the direction of Bruno Coulais in recordings of the original soundtracks of among others Coraline and Wendell and Wild

Mihai’s most recent achievements is the recording, together with pianist Oana Zamfir-Cocea, of the viola sonatas by Brahms and Shostakovich. As an orchestra musician, Mihai Cocea was the leader of the Liechtenstein Orchester and co-leader of the St Gallen Symphonic Orchestra, Switzerland. In 2020, Mihai Cocea was appointed an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music for his artistic activity on an international level. Since 2017, Mihai Cocea has been the leader of the viola section with the Brussels Philarmonic Orchestra.

Born in Bucharest, Mihai Cocea started the study of violin at 5, later at 13 discovering the wonderful sound of the viola. He attended the National College of Music George Enescu in Bucharest, continued his studies in London, at the Royal Academy of Music. As a soloist, Mihai Cocea performed with several orchestras, among which NOVA Rossia, The Moscow Soloists, and St. Andrews Symphony Orchestra. Among

SAMUEL NEMTANU Violin

After studying at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris with Boris Garlitsky and a Performance Diploma in solo and string quartet at the Chicago Roosevelt University, Samuel Nemtanu was appointed leader of the second violins of the Brussels Philharmonic. Samuel developed his passion for chamber music and founded the Brussels-based Carousel Ensemble, bringing together talents from the most important international stages. He also regularly participates in numerous chamber music concerts. As a result of his commitment to teaching and his instrumental experience he now trains the violinists of the Youth Orchestra of Flanders (YOF). Samuel is also a member of the French orchestra Les Dissonances which performs the symphonic repertoire without a conductor.
