WELCOME! sponsors to volunteers, who made this evening possible. No one will blame me for giving a special thanks to Brussels Philharmonic led by our FFG Music Director, Maestro Dirk Brossé. Besides their festival performance, their contribution to our anniversary project 2x25 was essential to its resounding success. Between the music written by the composers and its visual translation by the film directors, they formed an indispensable link. You can listen and watch the result on our website: filmfestgent.be/2x25.

Apart from the young talent, I feel, along with you, a little overwhelmed by all the frequently lauded talent present here tonight. It seems like a Clash of the Titans. Coincidentally, one of the dozens of films for which Laurence Rosenthal composed music during his 60-year career. Tonight, along with his Italian colleague Nicola Piovani, he will be presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award. By the way, you can experience how surprisingly lively Laurence Rosenthal’s music is long after this WSA evening. Just buy the album Laurence Rosenthal: Music for Film and Television, published by Film Fest Gent.

ABOUT THE MUSIC

ABOUT THE MUSIC of the Year award at the World Soundtrack Awards 2022. She can also be heard on her radio residency on NTS Radio.

The music Brussels Philharmonic will perform tonight was composed by our three special guests. Composers Laurence Rosenthal and Nicola Piovani will receive this year’s Lifetime Achievement Awards for their impressive careers, as you will be able to judge for yourself by the wonderful pieces from their repertoires. As is custom, our last special guest is last year’s Discovery of the Year winner, which gives us the pleasure to listen to the work of Eiko Ishibashi. The Japanese multiinstrumentalist and composer wrote a suite inspired by both Drive My Car and Evil Does Not Exist especially for this evening.

“It was a great honour to be invited to the World Soundtrack Awards last year and to receive an award, but more than that, meeting people from all over the world who work on soundtracks became a precious experience for me. I’m going to take part in the award ceremony this year and I’m really looking forward to it.”

EIKO ISHIBASHI

→ Eiko Ishibashi was born in Japan → Multi-instrumentalist who frequently works with Jim O’Rourke → Worked with director Ryûsuke Hamaguchi on Drive My Car (2021), Evil Does Not Exist (2023) and Gift (2023), which received its world premiere at Film Fest Gent

Discovery of the Year 2022 Eiko Ishibashi is a Japanese multiinstrumentalist whose work has ranged from acclaimed singer-songwriter albums to scores for film, television, theatre and exhibitions to improvised music. She has collaborated with international artists such as Jim O’Rourke, Keiji Haino, Charlemagne Palestine, Merzbow, Giovanni Di Domenico, Phew, and many others. Her own records have been released by Drag City, Black Truffle, and Editions Mego, amongst others. Amongst her film scores is Ryûsuke Hamaguchi’s 2021 Academy Award winning film Drive My Car for which she won the Discovery World Soundtrack Awards

ABOUT THE MUSIC

NICOLA PIOVANI World Soundtrack Lifetime Achievement Award Winner Nicola Piovani studied orchestration under the tutelage of Manos Hadjidakis and went on to write music for more than two hundred films and series, and still alternates this with composing for his other great love: theatre. He worked with important Italian directors including Marco Bellocchio and Nanni Moretti. After Nino Rota’s death in 1979, Piovani became Federico Fellini’s regular composer. He provided the scores for Fellini’s last three feature films. He broke through the Italian borders by writing music for films by filmmakers such as Bigas Luna (Jamón, Jamón), Belgium’s Jean-Jacques Andrien (Australia) and Dušan Makavejev (Manifesto).

One of the biggest awards for his work came in 1999, when his music for Roberto Benigni’s classic La vita è bella won him the Oscar for Best Music and he was nominated for a Grammy. More recently, Piovani provided the music for Bellocchio’s mafia drama Il traditore, Gabriele Muccino’s popular Gli anni più belli and Leonora addio, Paolo Taviani’s new film that competed for the Golden Bear at the Berlinale in February 2022. → Nicola Piovani was born in Rome in 1946 → Wrote music for over 200 films and series → Frequent collaborator of Federico Fellini → Won an Oscar for his score for La vita è bella

“The world needs symphonic music. And symphonic music needs the world.” That is the firm belief of the Brussels Philharmonic. As a symphony orchestra founded in 1935 under the auspices of the Belgian public broadcaster, unveiling the symphonic world as best we can is deep in our DNA. By innovating while maintaining full respect for the value of the past, we keep the symphonic music of the past, present and future relevant and inspiring – for ourselves and all of society. We do this from the historic Studio 4 at Flagey in Brussels, together with our music director Kazushi Ono: he shares our open and adventurous spirit and our rock-solid belief in the need for cross-fertilization between art, life and society.

The vision of our music director overlaps in so many ways with that of the orchestra: the authenticity with which the great repertoire is kept alive, the permanent quest for innovation and evolution, the commitment to giving the music of today and tomorrow a central role, and the passion for sharing the love of symphonic music widely and generously. The orchestra’s international reputation comes to the fore in its specialisation in recording soundtracks (including the Oscar-winning music for The Artist), the many successful recordings for labels such as Deutsche Grammophon, and the ambitious projects on prestigious stages around the world (Carnegie Hall, New York, Philharmonie de Paris, Musikverein Wien, Grosses Festspielhaus Salzburg, Cadogan Hall, London).
