“Now more than ever we need to communicate with each other, to listen to each other and to understand how we see the world, and cinema is the best medium for doing this.” EN Wise words from Martin Scorsese, who is not only honoured with a spectacular retrospective in the Caermersklooster complex but whose unrivalled passion for film and body of work, which is as honest as it is personal, should make him the patron saint of every film festival, even though he is thankfully still very much alive. I can hardly begin to summarise everything which can be seen, heard and experienced at this 40th anniversary edition of Film Fest Gent: simply browse through this Knack Focus Special and you will discover the rich harvest of films, events, concerts and moments of reflection, debate and discussion. What should a film festival in this second decade of the 21st century be like? This question can be answered with all kinds of well-founded reflections and theories which are difficult to fit into a modest column such as this. However, you could say that a festival should be everything which good cinema can be: exciting, intriguing, unruly, entertaining, sexy, emotionally enhancing, intellectually stimulating and thought-provoking. Or it should simply offer solace and beauty. Film Fest Gent is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Here and there, the programme discreetly refers to the road which lies behind us, but the main focus of this anniversary edition is on the future, on the unlikely transformations found in the world of moving images. A festival such as FFG gives you the opportunity to spend 12 days immersing yourself in cinema in its most multifaceted form and to sample the art of film in all its richness, diversity and ongoing capacity to surprise and inspire. Je ne souhaite pas me risquer à énumérer tout ce qu’il y aura à voir, à entendre et à vivre lors de cette quarantième édition du Film Fest Gent : il vous suffit de parcourir ce Knack Focus Special pour découvrir la multitude de films, d’événements, de concerts et d’instants de réflexion, de débat et de discussion au programme. Le rôle d’un festival de cinéma en cette deuxième décennie du 21e siècle pourrait être défini par de nombreuses considérations et théories établies qui entreraient difficilement dans un petit billet.

On peut cependant dire qu’un festival doit cumuler tous les atouts du cinéma de qualité en étant passionnant, intrigant, rebelle, amusant, sexy, enrichissant sur le plan émotionnel, stimulant sur le plan intellectuel et invitant à la réflexion. En d’autres termes, il doit offrir réconfort et beauté. Le Film Fest Gent fête ses quarante ans. Si le programme fait discrètement allusion, çà et là, au chemin parcouru, l’esprit de cette édition festive est résolument tourné vers l’avenir et les transformations rocambolesques du monde du grand écran. Un festival tel que le Film Fest Gent offre l’occasion de s’immerger pendant douze jours dans les formes les plus variées du film et de goûter au cinéma dans toute sa richesse, sa diversité et sa capacité de continuer à surprendre et à exalter. EN The 40th Film Fest Gent will open with The Fifth Estate, a compelling thriller driven by a masterful performance by British superstar Benedict Cumberbatch. Bill Condon’s biopic about the rise and fall of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is a true 21st-century saga about technology, politics and social responsibility. fr Le 40e Film Fest Gent démarrera avec la projection du film Le Cinquième pouvoir, un thriller d’investigation haletant, porté par l’interprétation majestueuse de la superstar britannique Benedict Cumberbatch. Julian Assange (Cumberbatch), porte-parole controversé du site de dénonciation WikiLeaks et autrefois simple programmeur, est devenu l’un des plus illustres ennemis des États-Unis. Once an unremarkable programmer, he is now one of the most prominent enemies of the United States: Julian Assange (Cumberbatch), the controversial spokesman of the whistleblowing website WikiLeaks. The Fifth Estate reveals the history of WikiLeaks through the eyes of Daniel Domscheit-Berg (Daniel Brühl), one of Assange’s first supporters and also his former right-hand man. Bill Condon (the director of Gods and Monsters and Kinsey) based this exciting portrait on Berg’s biography Inside WikiLeaks and an exposé by The Guardian journalists David Leigh and Luke Harding. In the best tradition of factual thrillers such as David Fincher’s The Social Network, he focuses on the friendship between Berg and Assange and how, thanks to the website’s rapid rise to fame, they become global stars almost overnight. It also shows how they are finally driven apart by the biggest information leak in the history of the United States. More than just an absorbing and topical thriller, The Fifth Estate is a drama with Shakespearean touches.

In this claustrophobic space thriller, Sandra Bullock and George Clooney are two astronauts who are repairing the Hubble telescope on behalf of NASA. After a collision with space debris, they find themselves floating helplessly in space, looking for each other, for oxygen and radio contact with earth. Cuarón has no equal when it comes to staging action scenes as realistically as possible. In his typically intense style and with astonishingly long takes, Gravity keeps viewers in a stranglehold for the whole 90 minutes. The fact that Cuarón once again proves himself to be an unconventional storyteller and a gifted professional turns Gravity into a refreshingly unpredictable and hugely intelligent action film. At the same time, however, it is also a nail-biting survival thriller set in outer space and a realistically raw drama in which Cuarón alternates breathtaking vistas with claustrophobic intimacy.

EN This year, Film Fest Gent is organising the third edition of the short film competition for Belgian students. All the students from the recognised film schools in Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels can enter the short film created as part of their thesis. A professional jury, consisting of actress Chris Lomme, actor Titus De Voogdt, film maker Stephan Streker, film maker and animator Raoul Servais, director of Wallimage and Bruxellimage Philippe Reynaert, screenwriter Bram Renders, administrative director of Euroscoop Chantal Krakowski and producer Ellen De Waele, will be rewarding the best entry with the National Lottery Award for Best Belgian Student Short Film, to the value of €2000. By doing so, Film Fest Gent wishes to emphasise the importance of the short film genre and give young, talented film makers the prospect of a good career. The audience can also vote for their favourite film on the day, which will then win the ACE Audience Award. fr Cette année, le Film Fest Gent organise la troisième édition de la Compétition des courts métrages belges étudiants. EN Film Fest Gent is also putting European short film talents in the spotlight and, as in previous years, is kicking off the competition to find the best European short film. This is being organised in collaboration with the European Film Academy and 14 other European film festivals, including Venice and Berlin. The talent selected as the winner in Ghent can then compete for the first prize next year: a screening of their short film at the European Film Awards Ceremony and the title of ‘Best European Short’. This winner will be selected by the international jury consisting of John Parish, István Szabó, Bahman Ghobadi, Fien Troch, Denis Dercourt and Gustavo Santaolalla. fr Le Film Fest Gent met également à l’honneur les talents européens du court métrage et, comme les années précédentes, donne le coup d’envoi de la course au prix du meilleur court métrage européen. EN We have had the pleasure of his company at several previous WSA concerts but this will be the first time that Alexandre Desplat, the most celebrated composer of his generation, will perform a selection of his incredibly rich and varied film compositions in front of an audience of 3,000 people and film music fans. Desplat continues to amaze with the sheer volume of compositions he produces, yet without compromising quality and imagination in the slightest. Last year, he wrote remarkable music for no fewer than eight (!) feature films: the Oscar winning Argo by Ben Affleck, Zero Dark Thirty by Kathryn Bigelow, Rise of the Guardians by Peter Ramsey, Renoir by Gilles Bourdos, Reality by Matteo Garrone, De Rouille et d’Os by Jacques Audiard, Moonrise Kingdom by Wes Anderson and Cloclo by FlorentEmilio Siri. This year’s Lifetime Achievement Award to be presented during the award ceremony of the WSA concert goes to the Italian composer Riz Ortolani, born in 1931 in Pesaro, Italy. Together with Ennio Morricone and the late Carlo Rustichelli and Nino Rota, Ortolani is one of the greats of Italian film music from the golden era of Italian cinema.
