Film Fest Gent ademt filmmuziek, zoveel is duidelijk. De combinatie van film en muziek is al sinds het prille begin een onmiskenbaar onderdeel van het festival, maar met de oprichting van de World Soundtrack Academy in 2001 zit filmmuziek pas echt verankerd in ons DNA. Door het samenbrengen van de educatieve, culturele en professionele aspecten van de kunst van filmmuziek, zorgt de Academy voor de instandhouding van de geschiedenis van de soundtrack en de wereldwijde promotie ervan. Die unieke focus komt tot uiting in de vele muziekprojecten die tijdens het festival, maar ook doorheen het jaar, georganiseerd worden: van filmmuziekconcerten en industry events tot een compositiewedstrijd en filmvertoningen met livemuziek. Vergeten we ook niet de compilatiealbums die uitgebracht worden en waarvoor het beste werk van filmcomponisten als onder andere Ryuichi Sakamoto, Alan Silvestri of Cliff Martinez door ons huisorkest Brussels Philharmonic ingespeeld werd. Bovendien werkte Film Fest Gent de voorbije jaren ook als partner mee aan verschillende internationale opleidingsinitiatieven. Hierdoor wist Gent zich op de kaart te zetten als trefpunt voor zowel gereputeerd als piepjong muzikaal talent en is ons festival niet meer weg te denken uit de drukbezette internationale festivalkalender. Het jaarlijkse muzikale hoogtepunt is ongetwijfeld het World Soundtrack Awards Gala & Concert, een prijsuitreiking waar filmcomponisten de erkenning krijgen die ze verdienen. De keuze voor jazzcomponist Terence Blanchard als centrale gast tijdens het aansluitende concert, ligt voor de hand in het jaar waarin een eeuw jazzmuziek gevierd wordt. Die avond verwelkomen we ook Joe Kraemer en David Shire. En wie nog meer wil genieten van filmmuziek zet maar beter het Symphonic Jazz Concert in zijn agenda, want dan bundelen Brussels Philharmonic en Brussels Jazz Orchestra de krachten om tal van jazzklassiekers tot leven te wekken. Dit jaar is Vooruit bovendien nog meer dan anders dĂŠ ontmoetingsplek voor alle overige muziekevenementen tijdens Film Fest Gent. Verwacht je aan een eigenzinnige mix
van beeld en film met elektronica, jazz, avant-rock, ambient of sound art. In de sectie Sound & Vision van het festivalprogramma ontdek je dan weer de beste films over internationale muzikanten en artiesten. The focus on music and the celebration of the film composer are the main features that make Film Fest Gent truly unique in the fully booked festival calendar. In 2001, the World Soundtrack Academy was created to oversee all aspects of the art of film music. During the annual World Soundtrack Awards Gala & Concert, awards are handed out to celebrate outstanding achievements. Central guests this year are Terence Blanchard, Joe Kraemer and David Shire. In addition, the Symphonic Jazz Concert will focus on a century of jazz music influencing the art of film scoring. Film Fest Gent and Vooruit are also joining forces again, focussing on the combination of images and music through live film scores, performances with projection, expanded cinema and everything in between. 17th World Soundtrack Awards Gala & Concert Jazzmuziek viert dit jaar zijn honderdste verjaardag, meteen reden genoeg om tijdens de World Soundtrack Awards te focussen op deze bij uitstek Amerikaanse muziekstijl. Bovendien viel de opkomst van de Jazz Age ook samen met de ontwikkeling en wereldwijde verspreiding van die andere alomtegenwoordige kunstvorm: film. De manier waarop beiden elkaar door de jaren heen beïnvloedden en vooral ook verrijkten, met tal van unieke symfonische jazzcomposities voor film als resultaat, komt volop aan bod tijdens onze twee concerten.
We verwelkomen verder Joe Kraemer, vorig jaar nog gelauwerd als Discovery of the Year en vooral bekend om zijn samenwerking met regisseur Christopher McQuarrie. ‘The Way of the Gun’, ‘Jack Reacher’ en ‘Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation’, het zijn stuk voor stuk actiekanjers waarin Kraemers forse muziek de spanning ten top drijft.
De World Soundtrack Awards, de belangrijkste internationale filmmuziekprijzen, worden sinds 2001 uitgereikt tijdens het jaarlijkse World Soundtrack Awards Gala & Concert. Gevestigde namen worden gelauwerd, terwijl ook beginnende componisten er in de kijker staan. De prijzen worden uitgereikt in het gezelschap van heel wat prominenten uit de internationale filmmuziekwereld.
De Lifetime Achievement Award gaat dit jaar naar David Shire voor zijn indrukwekkende, veelzijdige carrière. Hij brengt op piano nummers uit onder andere Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘The Conversation’, ‘The Taking of Pelham One Two Three’, ‘Saturday Night Fever’, ‘Return to Oz’ en ‘Farewell, My Lovely’.
Na het gala volgt een concert van de beste jazzsoundtracks terwijl clips vertoond worden op het grote scherm. Eregast dit jaar is gevierd trompettist en jazzmuzikant Terence Blanchard die als componist al tientallen films – en vier Grammy Awards – achter zijn naam zette. Door zijn jarenlange samenwerking met regisseur Spike Lee blijft Blanchard onlosmakelijk verbonden met films als ‘Malcolm X’, ‘25th Hour’, ‘Clockers’ en ‘Inside Man’. The annual World Soundtrack Awards Gala & Concert celebrates outstanding achievements in scoring music for motion pictures and TV series and is attended by scores of international composers and film music professionals. Guest of honour this year is world-renowned trumpeter, composer and band leader Terence Blanchard, known for his long-running collaboration with director Spike Lee for whom he scored such films as ‘Malcolm X’, ‘25th Hour’, ‘Clockers’ and ‘Inside Man’. During the concert, Blanchard will also be performing work from ‘Sugar Hill’ and the HBO documentary series ‘When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts’. Compositiewedstrijd Tijdens het World Soundtrack Awards Gala & Concert krijgt het publiek ook drie symfonische scores te horen bij een scène uit Bernardo Bertolucci’s ‘Il conformista’ uit 1970. Samen bepalen zij wie die avond naar huis gaat met de SABAM Award voor Beste Jonge Internationale Componist ter waarde van €2.500, meteen een belangrijke opstap naar een professionele carrière in de wereld van de filmmuziek. The WSAwards Gala & Concert programme also includes three symphonic scores accompanying a scene from Bernardo Bertolucci’s thriller ‘Il conformista’ (1970), written by the finalists of the Composition Contest for Young International Film Composers. This annual competition challenges young film musicians to compose a new soundtrack for a chosen scene from a film or TV series. A professional jury, headed by conductor-composer Dirk Brossé, awards the winner the SABAM Award for Best Young International Composer, worth €2,500.

Symphonic Jazz Concert Een avond zonder ceremonie of bedankingsspeeches, maar des te meer muziek volledig gewijd aan de invloed van jazz op film: dat is het Symphonic Jazz Concert. Het belooft een all-time Classics Night te worden, waarvoor Brussels Philharmonic en Brussels Jazz Orchestra voor de gelegenheid de handen in elkaar slaan. Onder leiding van maestro Dirk Brossé brengen ze samen in het Capitole de beste symfonische jazzsoundtracks van de afgelopen eeuw tot leven, vergezeld door de bijhorende filmfragmenten op het grote scherm. Denk aan Henry Mancini’s thema voor ‘The Pink Panther’, aan ‘Bullitt’ of ‘The Cincinnati Kid’ van Lalo Schifrin, ‘The Man with the Golden Arm’ van Elmer Bernstein of Alan Silvestri’s ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit?’.

Op het programma staan onder andere ook ‘Chinatown’ van Jerry Goldsmith en Alex Norths ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ terwijl Joe Kraemer een jazzherwerking voor groot orkest brengt van het overbekende thema van ‘Mission: Impossible’. Brussels Jazz Orchestra voert bovendien een eigen improvisatie op van Michel Legrands thema van ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’, terwijl ook meer recente scores zoals een suite van Justin Hurwitz voor ‘La La Land’ of ‘The Black Dahlia’ van Mark Isham een plaats krijgen tijdens dit concert. Tot slot mag ook David Shire, die dit jaar de WSA Lifetime Achievement Award ontvangt, niet ontbreken tijdens het Symphonic Jazz Concert. Hij begeleidt op piano de uitvoering van zijn werk uit onder andere ‘The Taking of Pelham One Two Three’ en ‘The Conversation’. Met twee Belgische toporkesten op het podium en de vertoning van filmfragmenten op het witte doek, wordt dit een niet te missen, unieke totaalervaring voor elke jazz- en/of filmliefhebber. Op zondagnamiddag 15 oktober slaat het Silent Movie Orchestra van KASK en Conservatorium aan het improviseren. Onder begeleiding van docent en gevierd trompettist Bart Maris creëren ze ter plekke een muzikale score bij een reeks atypische animatiekortfilms die op groot scherm vertoond worden. Geheel in het teken van de Italiaanse focus die de 44e editie van Film Fest Gent kleurt, bestaat het programma van deze matinee screening uit Italiaanse kortfilms, zorgvuldig geselecteerd door de Cineteca di Bologna. On Sunday 15 October, Film Fest Gent organises a matinee screening of a series of atypical Italian animation shorts, carefully selected by the Cineteca di Bologna. During the screening, the Silent Movie Orchestra of the School of Arts in Ghent will improvise a live musical score for these films, under the guidance of their teacher and renowned Belgian trumpeter Bart Maris.

Hoewel er elk jaar onnoembaar veel films worden gemaakt, blijven veel filmscenario’s op de plank liggen. Auteur Christian Janicot verzamelde 25 jaar geleden zo’n honderd van die onbekende verhalen in zijn boek ‘Anthologie du cinéma invisible’. Frederik Leroux en Heleen Van Haegenborgh baseerden zich op Janicots boek voor een schijnbaar onmogelijke opdracht: een live soundtrack maken voor een film die niet bestaat. Een abstracte audiofilm met avontuurlijke improvisaties.

Drie jaar later staat Goblin opnieuw in Vooruit: deze keer spelen ze een integrale live score bij het legendarische zombie-epos ‘Dawn of the Dead’ van George A. Romero die deze zomer overleed. The WSAwards Industry Day is an annual networking event where both young and established international film (music) professionals can learn, debate and network. VOORMIDDAG: masterclasses met nationale en internationale vertegenwoordigers van professionele organisaties. NAMIDDAG: panelgesprekken met film(muziek)professionals over hot topics binnen de sector. MORNING: masterclasses by national and international representatives from professional organisations. Film Fest Gent host dit jaar, i.s.m. SABAM en SACEM, een nieuwe editie van 3rd Character, een initiatief dat in het leven geroepen werd door het Internationaal Filmfestival van Aubagne en SACEM. Doel van de professionele meetings is om componisten in contact te brengen met regisseurs en producenten die een filmproject in de pijplijn zitten hebben. Op basis van het scenario of een bepaalde scène, krijgen de musici de kans om hun artistieke visie over het project of een gecomponeerde demo te pitchen met het oog op een mogelijke toekomstige samenwerking. For the third consecutive year Film Fest Gent and SABAM host 3rd Character, an initiative originally created by the International Film Festival of Aubagne and SACEM aimed at setting up professional meetings between music composers and directors/producers who are developing a film. During the WSA Industry Day, selected composers will be able to pitch their artistic vision on the project or present a demo to convince the filmmakers to collaborate on creating the film’s musical score.

EUROPEAN POSTGRADUATE
ARTS IN SOUND Een van de manieren waarop onze focus op soundtracks tot uiting komt, is de medewerking aan de European Postgraduate in Arts in Sound (EPAS). Deze eenjarige postgraduaatsopleiding stelt het geluid in relatie tot luisteren als artistieke discipline centraal. Studenten doorlopen in het eerste semester verschillende modules (vier in Gent, een in Amsterdam) gericht op de studie van geluid, enerzijds als op zichzelf staande discipline, anderzijds in relatie tot bioscoopen televisieproducties, performances en andere media. Tijdens het tweede semester krijgen studenten de kans hun eigen artistieke projecten verder uit te werken aan een van de partnerinstituten. EPAS (European Postgraduate in Arts in Sound) is a one-year international postgraduate programme about sound in an audiovisual context and is organised into five intensive modules during the first semester, each exploring sound as an artistic discipline from a different perspective. Four modules take place in Ghent, one in Amsterdam. During the second semester, students have the possibility to develop their personal artistic projects at one of the partner institutes.

COMPOSITION FOR SCREEN Film Fest Gent werkte de afgelopen jaren mee aan de ontwikkeling van de International Master in Composition for Screen (InMICS), een nieuwe internationale masteropleiding waarvoor verschillende Europese en Canadese kunstonderwijsinstellingen en organisaties actief op het vlak van audiovisuele creatie hun expertise bundelen. Studenten die als componist voor audiovisuele media aan de slag willen, kunnen tijdens deze tweejarige opleiding projecten ontwikkelen binnen een professionele omgeving. Ze krijgen daarbij de kans samen te werken met internationale professionals en zo hun netwerk en vaardigheden verder op te bouwen. Het eerste academiejaar van deze masteropleiding gaat in september 2018 van start.

WATCH THAT SOUND! Dit jaar nodigen Film Fest Gent en Watch That Sound jongeren voor het eerst uit om op een actieve en creatieve manier kennis te maken met muziek en geluid in film. Onder leiding van een muziekdocent en een muziekproducer maken de deelnemers zelf een soundtrack en de bruitage bij een film. De workshop duurt anderhalf uur en is toegankelijk voor kinderen van 6 tot 12 jaar. This year, Film Fest Gent and Watch That Sound invite young people to become acquainted with music and sound in film in an active and creative way. Guided by a music teacher and a producer, the participants create sound and music for a film. The workshop welcomes children, aged 6 - 12, and lasts one hour and a half.

In de zomer van 2017 kwam Cinema Canvas met een straffe selectie filmklassiekers naar zeven Vlaamse steden toe. Bij die films horen ook onvergetelijke soundtracks, dus bracht Cinema Canvas, o.a. in samenwerking met Film Fest Gent, een uniek compilatiealbum uit. Op de tracklist vind je onder andere muziek van Tears for Fears voor ‘Donnie Darko’ en een compositie van Alexandre Desplat voor ‘Moonrise Kingdom’. Het album is verkrijgbaar in de winkel en via iTunes. In the summer of 2017, Cinema Canvas toured around Flanders with outdoor screenings of film classics, selected by experts in the field. Because these films wouldn’t be half as legendary without the iconic music that accompanies them, Cinema Canvas and Film Fest Gent released a compilation album. The tracklist includes music from ‘Donnie Darko’, ‘Moonrise Kingdom’, ‘A Clockwork Orange’… Available in stores and on iTunes.

KASKcinema, Democrazy en Film Fest Gent slaan meerdere keren per jaar de handen in elkaar voor een nieuwe editie van Live Track Cinema, waarbij pop- en rockmuzikanten muziek en beeld op een creatieve manier laten samensmelten tot een audiovisueel spektakel. Op zaterdag 23 september gaat het aanstormende Gentse jazztrio Steiger aan de slag met de glasplaatanimaties van Joeri Norstein (‘Egeltje in de mist’, ‘Sprookje der sprookjes’ en ‘De slag om Kerzjenets’), terwijl op 8 december Hiele, kersvers resident dj van Vooruit, aan de beurt is.

Several times a year, KASKcinema, Democrazy and Film Fest Gent team up to organise Live Track Cinema, an audiovisual spectacle inviting pop- and rock musicians to merge music and image in a creative way. On 23 September, Ghent-based jazz trio Steiger tackles Joeri Norstein’s animation films ‘Hedgehog in the Fog’, ‘Tale of Tales’ and ‘The Battle of Kerzhenets’, while on 8 December, Vooruit’s resident DJ Hiele will perform a live score during Live Track Cinema.
