He shoots, he scores!
Film Fest Gent ademt filmmuziek, zoveel is duidelijk. Onder de noemer Film Fest Gent Music worden er niet enkel tijdens het festival, maar ook doorheen het jaar vele muzikale projecten georganiseerd: van filmmuziekconcerten (p. 9) en het jaarlijks uitbrengen van een compilatiealbum (p. 4) tot het houden van masterclasses en seminars (p. 10-11). Hierdoor wist Gent zich op de kaart te zetten als trefpunt voor zowel gereputeerd als piepjong muzikaal talent en is het festival niet meer weg te denken uit de drukbezette festivalkalender. Sinds de oprichting van de World Soundtrack Academy in 2001 zit filmmuziek pas echt verankerd in ons DNA. Zo selecteert de Academy elk jaar de winnaars van de World Soundtrack Awards (p. 3), de meest prestigieuze filmmuziekprijzen ter wereld. Dit jaar zijn Carter Burwell, de Franse componist Philippe Sarde en Nicholas Britell onze eregasten. Maar filmmuziekfans krijgen nog meer om naar uit te kijken: naar aanleiding van de 50e verjaardag van Stanley Kubricks meesterwerk ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ selecteerden we voor het themaconcert 2001 and Beyond: A Symphonic Odyssey (p. 5) scores van films die zich afspelen in de ruimte. Brussels Philharmonic onder leiding van maestro Dirk Brossé zal de scores van onder meer ‘Star Wars’ en ‘The Martian’ tot leven wekken. Daarnaast lanceren we dit jaar samen met Vooruit VIDEODROOM (p. 6-8), een uniek cross-overfestival tussen film en muziek. VIDEODROOM wordt geopend door ex-Sonic Youth frontman Thurston Moore, die een nieuwe score zal maken bij vier kortfilms van Maya Deren. De beste muziekfilms en documentaires over uiteenlopende internationale muzikanten en artiesten ontdek je dan weer in de sectie Sound & Vision van het Film Fest Gent-filmprogramma (p. 12). Bovendien werkte Film Fest Gent de voorbije jaren als partnerorganisatie mee aan verschillende internationale opleidingsinitiatieven (p. 10). Ter aanvulling van de gloednieuwe InMICS Master, ontwikkelde Film Fest Gent het InMICS Composers Lab, een intensief internationaal trainingsprogramma voor jonge componisten dat gelanceerd
wordt tijdens de komende editie van Film Fest Gent. Een aantal van de masterclasses van dit educatieve project worden ook opengesteld voor breed publiek (p. 10-11). Stuk voor stuk niet te missen evenementen voor wie van filmmuziek of simpelweg goede muziek houdt. Benieuwd? Je leest er alles over in deze extra bijlage. As a result, Film Fest Gent Music offers a wide range of musical projects for you to enjoy. During the annual World Soundtrack Awards (p. 3) we celebrate outstanding achievements in film music. Central guests this year are Carter Burwell, Philippe Sarde and Nicholas Britell. In addition, 2001 and Beyond: A Symphonic Odyssey (p. 5) will focus on scores of films which are set in space, in celebration of the 50th birthday of Kubrick’s masterpiece. Film Fest Gent and Vooruit are joining forces again and launch VIDEODROOM (p. 6-8): a 10-day crossover universe, balancing between film and music. And, like every year, Film Fest Gent’s Sound & Vision section (p. 12) showcases the best documentaries and feature films on a wide range of music and musicians. 18th World Soundtrack Awards met Carter Burwell live in concert De World Soundtrack Awards, de belangrijkste internationale filmmuziekprijzen ter wereld, worden sinds 2001 uitgereikt door de World Soundtrack Academy tijdens een luisterrijke awardshow. Gevestigde namen worden er gevierd, maar ook beginnende componisten staan in de kijker. Je kan genieten van een symfonisch concert dat volledig in het teken van de eregasten staat: een selectie van hun werk wordt gebracht door Brussels Philharmonic onder leiding van Dirk Brossé, vergezeld door filmfragmenten op het grote scherm. Film Fest Gent ontvangt op 17 oktober Carter Burwell als eregast. Nooit eerder werd muziek van de wereldwijd gelauwerde componist live uitgevoerd. Burwell is niet enkel bekend omwille van zijn meeslepende scores voor films als ‘Being John Malkovich’, ‘In Bruges’, ‘Anomalisa’ en ‘Twilight’, maar vooral vanwege zijn unieke samenwerkingen met de gebroeders Coen (‘Fargo’, ‘True Grit’, ‘Miller’s Crossing’) en Todd Haynes (‘Carol’, ‘Wonderstruck’, ‘Mildred Pierce’). Eerder dit jaar ontving de veelgeprezen Amerikaanse componist zowel een Oscar- als een Golden Globe-nominatie voor de zwarte komedie ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’ van Martin McDonagh.

Philippe Sarde ontvangt de World Soundtrack Lifetime Achievement Award voor zijn indrukwekkende carrière. De Franse componist staat bekend voor de veelzijdigheid in zijn muziek, van indrukwekkend symfonisch werk naar pure jazz. Sarde wordt gevierd met een bloemlezing uit zijn muziek voor films van verschillende vooraanstaande regisseurs
zoals Claude Sautet, Bertrand Tavernier, André Téchiné, Roman Polanski, Jean-Jacques Annaud en zelfs Robert Bresson. Naar jaarlijkse traditie verwelkomt Film Fest Gent de winnende componist van de World Soundtrack Discovery of the Year Award van het voorgaande jaar. In 2017 kaapte de Amerikaanse componist, pianist en producer Nicholas Britell het beeldje weg voor zijn muziek in het Oscarwinnende ‘Moonlight’ van Barry Jenkins. Compositiewedstrijd Tijdens de World Soundtrack Awards is er ook plaats voor opkomend talent. Bij een scène uit Isao Takahata’s animefilm uit 1988 ‘Grave of the Fireflies’ krijgt het publiek drie symfonische scores te horen die werden geschreven door de drie finalisten van de compositiewedstrijd voor jonge internationale componisten. Deze jaarlijkse wedstrijd daagt jonge filmmusici uit om een nieuwe score te schrijven bij een geselecteerd film- of tv-fragment. De jury onder leiding van Dirk Brossé bepaalt wie die avond naar huis gaat met de SABAM Award for Most Original Composition by a Young Composer ter waarde van €2.500 en het Hans Zimmer Strings-pakket van Spitfire Audio.

2001 and Beyond: A Symphonic Odyssey De 50e verjaardag van Stanley Kubricks meesterwerk ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ wordt uitgebreid gevierd tijdens 2001 and Beyond: A Symphonic Odyssey. Het concert verkent de muzikale rijkdom van verschillende generaties componisten die aan reizen door het heelal een eigen sound gaven. Een stukje kosmische filmmuziekgeschiedenis wordt tot leven gebracht, met de klemtoon op de grote componisten van de jaren zeventig tot nu. Zet je schrap voor de space opera’s van John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, John Barry, Elliot Goldenthal, Ennio Morricone, Harry Gregson-Williams en Cliff Martinez. En laat je overdonderen en meeslepen door de soundtracks uit onder meer ‘Star Wars’, ‘Star Trek’, ‘Alien’, ‘The Black Hole’, ‘Solaris’, ‘Black Mirror: USS Callister’ en in wereldpremière: ‘The Martian’. Brussels Philharmonic speelt in première een fragment uit de oorspronkelijke score van Alex North voor ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’; een score die door Kubrick op de valreep werd vervangen door bestaande klassieke muziek van onder andere Johann Strauss. Patrick Duynslaegher, artistiek directeur van Film Fest Gent: “‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ blijft een halve eeuw later een ongeëvenaarde bespiegeling over de mens in de tijd en in de ruimte. Ook op muzikaal vlak is het een datum in de filmgeschiedenis. Kubricks finale keuze om de soundtrack uitsluitend te vullen met klassieke stukken zorgde ervoor dat je niet meer naar Johan Strauss’ ‘De Blauwe Donau’ kan luisteren zonder dat je er de beelden bij ziet van majestatische ruimtetuigen die sierlijk door het heelal walsen. Zo dwingend is Kubricks audiovisuele taal dat beeld en muziek voor eeuwig met elkaar verbonden blijven. Thurston Moore ken je natuurlijk van oernoiseband Sonic Youth. Speciaal voor VIDEODROOM zakt hij af naar Vooruit voor een exclusieve en eenmalige show. GHOST: HAUNTED HOUSE is een totaalspektakel waar Raveyards, het Gentse audiovisuele electronica-collectief rond François de Meyer en Stefan Bracke, achter schuil gaat. Geïnspireerd door klassieke horrorfilms als ‘House on Haunted Hill’ en ‘The Haunting’ transformeert GHOST de Concertzaal van Vooruit in een écht spookhuis. Met installaties en performances door Christeene, Dolly Bing Bing & Alien Observer, Johannes Verschaeve, Hantrax en Oisoi. BLADE
Kilbourne is een transgender dj die groot werd in het LGBTQ-clubcircuit van New York. Ze heeft een voorliefde voor hardcore house, trance én horror-films en maakte een compleet nieuwe soundtrack bij ‘Blade’, de ondertussen legendarisch campy vampierenklassieker uit 1998 met Wesley Snipes in de hoofdrol. Kilbournes nieuwe score is een sterke mix van opzwepende gabber-house en sfeervolle ambient, waardoor ‘Blade’ een compleet ander karakter krijgt. Kilbourne has a predilection for hardcore house, trance and horror films, so she made a new soundtrack for ‘Blade’. Her mix of gabberhouse and ambient lends the 1998 Wesley Snipes vampire movie a completely new character.
GHOST is an all-encompassing conceptual spectacle from Raveyards, the Ghent-based audiovisual electronica collective. Various bands and solo artists will play short sets amid impressive video installations.

KEVIN TOMA PLAYS ‘FRANKENSTEIN’

It’s alive! James Whale’s ‘Frankenstein’, met de mythische Boris Karloff in de hoofdrol, zorgde in 1931 voor vele klamme handjes en verschrikte blikken. Zoveel decennia later staat Whale’s meesterwerk nog altijd als een huis. Kevin Toma schreef een originele soundtrack bij de film, waarbij hij afwijkt van de klassieke ‘Frankenstein’-interpretatie. Voor de muzikant draait het verhaal veeleer om een diepe, onuitroeibare eenzaamheid. Kevin Toma composed an original soundtrack to James Whale’s 1931 classic ‘Frankenstein.’ He deviates from the classical interpretation and chooses to highlight the dominating sense of loneliness. Hoewel pianist-componisten Dustin O’Halloran en Hauschka al jarenlang vrienden zijn, is het Oscargenomineerde ‘Lion’ van Garth Davis hun eerste samenwerking in filmverband. De soundtrack vormt het startpunt van dit concert. De gezamenlijk gecomponeerde score weerspiegelt hun gedeelde interesses in zowel klassieke als avant-garde composities. Improviserend op het thema van ‘Lion’, dagen Hauschka en Dustin O’Halloran elkaar muzikaal uit, elk achter hun piano. Though pianist-composers Dustin O’Halloran and Hauschka are longtime friends, Garth Davis’ Oscar-nominated ‘Lion’ marks their first collaboration. Improvising on this score, Hauschka and O’Halloran challenge each other, each at their piano.

Het werk van filmmaakster en kunstenares Oona Libens bevindt zich ergens tussen expanded cinema performance, geluidskunst en precinematografische goocheltrucs. In haar voorstelling ‘Pharmakon’ tackelt ze onze hang naar entertainment en social media. De New Yorkse componist en improvisator Lea Bertucci grossiert in alles wat electroakoestisch en minimal is, maar gebruikt vooral de ruimte rond haar als instrument. In ‘Pharmakon,’ Oona Libens explores our addiction to entertainment and social media. Composer and improviser Lea Bertucci flourishes in all things electro-acoustic and minimal. In her new show she plays with patterns of reflected light on the wall behind her.

Voor ‘Phantom Kino Ballett’ slaan topproducer Lena Willikens en kunstenares Sarah Szczesny de handen in elkaar. Samen creëren ze een alsmaar muterende wereld van geesten. ‘Phantom Kino Ballett’ is een experimentele video, waarin quotes uit filmscènes, flarden gesproken woord en interviews worden gecombineerd met beeldende kunst, beschilderde kostuums, stroboscooplicht en rookmachines. Het resultaat is een audiovisuele, hallucinogene collage. ‘Phantom Kino Ballett’ is an experimental video in which quotes from film scenes and snippets from interviews meet visual art, painted costumes, strobe light and smoke machines. De Zwitsers-Tibetaanse producer en zangeres Aïsha Devi maakt euforische, gedeconstrueerde, filmische dansmuziek. Voor haar nieuwe show werkt Devi binnen een 360° panoramische projectie, ontworpen door de Franse kunstenaar Emile Barret. De Kretenzische Abyss X vermengt geheimzinnige hymnes uit haar moederland met jazz, folk, techno en noise. Het Leuvense elektronica-collectief Slagwerk sluit de avond af met een dj-set waarop het goed vertoeven is. GAIKA PAYS TRIBUTE TO ‘AKIRA’ + AFTERPARTY
30 jaar geleden kwam ‘Akira’ uit, een Japanse film geschreven en geregisseerd door Katsuhiro Otomo. Deze legendarische post-apocalyptische anime kreeg al snel een cultstatus. Ook Londense producer en rapper GAIKA is alvast fan. Zijn werk is een mix van triphop, dancehall en grime, doorspekt met afrofuturistische politics. Tijdens VIDEODROOM brengt GAIKA een hommage aan ‘Akira’ door een complete remix van geluid én beeld te maken. 30 years ago, Katsuhiro Otomo’s cult movie ‘Akira’ was released. The dystopian themes and endless imagination have influenced London based rapper and producer GAIKA. He will honour ‘Akira’ with an original remix of sound and image.

WATCH THAT SOUND
Net zoals vorig jaar nodigen Film Fest Gent en Watch That Sound kinderen uit om op een actieve en creatieve manier kennis te maken met muziek en geluid in film. Onder leiding van een muziekdocent en een muziekproducer maken de deelnemers zelf de soundtrack en de bruitage bij een film. De workshop duurt anderhalf uur en is toegankelijk voor kinderen van 6 tot 12 jaar. Just like last year, Film Fest Gent and Watch That Sound invite young people to create sound and music for a film. The workshop welcomes children aged 6-12 and lasts an hour and a half.

Several times a year, KASKcinema, Democrazy and Film Fest Gent team up to organise Live Track Cinema, an audiovisual spectacle inviting pop- and rock musicians to merge music and image in a creative way. KASKcinema, Democrazy en Film Fest Gent slaan meerdere keren per jaar de handen in elkaar voor een nieuwe editie van Live Track Cinema, waarbij pop- en rockmuzikanten muziek en beeld op een creatieve manier laten samensmelten tot een audiovisueel spektakel. In november gaat het Brusselse Hi Hawaii aan de slag met een film naar hun keuze. Dit duo ging voorheen door het leven als GeRoeZeMoes en maakt zelfverklaarde ExperimentalFizzPopExplosion.

INTERNATIONAL MASTER
COMPOSITION FOR SCREEN Vanaf september 2018 gaat het eerste academiejaar van de International Master in Composition for Screen officieel van start. Film Fest Gent werkte de afgelopen jaren mee aan de ontwikkeling van deze Masteropleiding gericht op het componeren van muziek voor audiovisuele media. Studenten kunnen rekenen op de knowhow van acht partnerorganisaties en doen praktijkervaring op tijdens de verschillende masterclasses en workshops van het InMICS Composers Lab. September 2018 will mark the start of the first academic year of the International Master in Composition for Screen. Film Fest Gent has contributed to the development of a new joint master’s degree dedicated to international students wishing to work as composers for audiovisual media. The programme also offers students the opportunity to boost their practical know-how during the InMICS Composers Lab.
INMICS COMPOSERS LAB Deze projectreeks gaat van start tijdens de komende editie van Film Fest Gent en omvat professionele ontmoetingen met filmmakers, netwerkactiviteiten, een masterclass van sound editor Val Kuklowsky, het Film Music & Sound Seminar en de World Soundtrack Awards Industry Day. En het beste? Deze masterclasses worden opengesteld voor een breed publiek. This intensive lab will be launched during the 45th edition of Film Fest Gent and comprises professional meetings with film makers, networking opportunities, a masterclass by sound editor Val Kuklowsky, the Film Music Seminar and the World Soundtrack Awards Industry Day. And the best thing is: entries for these masterclasses are available to a broad audience.

FILM MUSIC & SOUND SEMINAR
Dit jaar is de centrale gast van het Film Music & Sound Seminar wereldwijd gelauwerd componist Carter Burwell. Sinds ‘Blood Simple’ (1984) levert hij steevast zijn bijdrage aan de films van de Coen Brothers, in nauwe samenwerking met sounddesigner Skip Lievsay (‘Gravity’). Ook Martin McDonagh kan altijd bij Burwell aankloppen. Voor zijn film ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’ ontving Burwell in 2018 zijn eerste Oscarnominatie. Moderator dr. Martine Huvenne gaat tijdens het Seminar met Burwell in gesprek en vraagt hem alles wat je wil weten over componeren voor film. This year’s central guest, Carter Burwell, is not only a frequent collaborator of the Coen Brothers, but also usually works with their sound designer Skip Lievsay. For his work on Martin McDonagh’s ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’ Burwell received his first Academy Award nomination. Moderator dr. Martine Huvenne will ask him everything you ever wanted to know about composing for film.

3RD CHARACTER PROFESSIONAL MEETINGS Voor film- en muziekprofessionals host Film Fest Gent opnieuw 3rd Character. Doel van deze professionele meetings is om kandidaat-componisten in contact te brengen met regisseurs en producenten van lopende filmprojecten. Op basis van het scenario of een bepaalde scène krijgen de musici de kans om hun artistieke visie over het project of een gecomponeerde demo te pitchen met het oog op een mogelijke toekomstige samenwerking. For the third consecutive year Film Fest Gent hosts 3rd Character, an initiative aimed at setting up professional meetings between film composers and directors/producers. During the World Soundtrack Awards Industry Day, selected composers will be able to pitch their artistic vision on the project or present a demo to convince filmmakers to collaborate on creating the film’s musical score. i.s.m. De World Soundtrack Awards Industry Day is hét jaarlijkse netwerkevent waar zowel jonge als gevestigde internationale film(muziek)professionals samenkomen om te leren, te debatteren en te netwerken.
