EN Our programme coordinator Wim De Witte, our consultants and I have spent many hours in the dark so this programme could see the light. Seeing the best but also the worst of what world cinema has to offer really gets under your skin. It makes you think about the essence of cinema. As Jean Renoir said several decades ago, “Le cinéma est une fenêtre ouverte sur le monde” (“Cinema is an open window into the world”). To this date, nobody has come up with a better definition of the core of film. This openness to the world has culminated in a festival trail defined by current affairs, which we have called Fort Europe. Across the various sections you can discover thought-provoking films that reflect, analyse, comment and fantasise about our most pressing concern today: the humanitarian drama at the borders of the European Union, which has put the media into overdrive and has shocked and mobilised public opinion. Or films that provide a historical perspective about what Europe represents today… or all too often does not. The directors in our Fort Europe programme (you can find the complete list of films at www.filmfestival.be) believe that there can be no artistic commitment without a political commitment and vice versa. What better place to share this message and their dreams than in the theatre? In the enchanting atmosphere where people are at their most receptive to impressions and ideas – in the dark. nos consultants et moi-même avons passé des milliers d’heures dans l’obscurité. Lorsque l’on est plongé si longtemps dans le meilleur, mais aussi le pire du cinéma, l’on est forcément amené à réfléchir à l’essence même du cinéma. Il y a plusieurs décennies, Jean Renoir disait déjà que « le cinéma est une fenêtre ouverte sur le monde ». À l’heure actuelle, personne n’a encore trouvé de meilleure définition. Puisque les films sont un regard ouvert sur le monde, il était logique que nous proposions un parcours dicté par l’actualité. Le parcours Fort Europe vous propose des films qui font réfléchir, qui analysent ou commentent des situations, qui laissent libre cours à l’imagination ou provoquent le spectateur. Leur point commun? Ils traitent tous de l’actualité la plus sensible du moment: le drame humanitaire aux frontières de l’Union européenne, qui affole les médias, choque et trouble l’opinion publique. Ces films offrent des perspectives historiques, actuelles et même futures de ce qu’est l’Europe en 2015 ou souvent de ce qu’elle n’est pas. Pour les cinéastes de notre parcours Fort Europe (pour la liste complète des films, voir www.filmfestival.be), il n’y a pas d’engagement artistique sans engagement politique, et inversement. Pourquoi choisir le cinéma pour délivrer un message et exhiber ses rêves ? Concert Alan Silvestri

WORLD SOUNDTRACK AWARDS

EN Held on October 24th, the World Soundtrack Awards will celebrate its 15th

anniversary with Alan Silvestri, one of the most brilliant film composers of his generation. Although Silvestri has succeeded in writing successful scores for films that were able to exist on their own, his name remains associated with some of the most popular films of the last decades: ‘Back to the Future’, ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ and ‘Forrest Gump’. Three titles that are not coincidental all directed by Robert Zemeckis. After the technically ground breaking director asked Silvestri to write the music for his third film, ‘Romancing the Stone’ in 1984, Silvestri composed the scores for all of Zemeckis’ films thereafter. A rather unique collaboration in film history, which will certainly be the focus of the concert. Recently they worked together on ‘The Walk’ (pre-opening of the festival, p.9), of which the film music will have it’s world premiere at the WSAwards concert. Following the 42nd Film Fest Gent‘s focus on British cinema, the Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to composer Patrick Doyle at the World Soundtrack Awards. Discovery 2014 Daniel Pemberton will also be performing that evening.

Robert Zemeckis, car depuis 1984 Silvestri a composé la musique de tous les films de Zemeckis. Une collaboration plutôt unique dans l’histoire du cinéma qui sera largement abordée lors du concert. Concert Great British Film Music EN Following its focus on UK Cinema, Film Fest Gent will also celebrate the

rich tradition of British film music by organising the concert GREAT BRITISH FILM MUSIC at The Bijloke, that will provide an anthology of the work of both classical and contemporary film composers, whom have made a remarkable contribution to the image and success of British cinema. Nearly every roaring name of British film music will pass the lineup, ranging from William Walton to John Barry, from George Fenton to Michael Nyman. Their celebrated music will be accompanied by film excerpts from, amongst others, ‘Richard III’, ‘Shakespeare in Love’, ‘Murder on the Orient Express’, ‘Dangerous Liaisons’, ‘The Ipcress File’ and ‘The Knack... and how to get it’. George Fenton will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award and will be joined by composers Michael Nyman, Stephen Warbeck and Craig Armstrong.

For over forty-five minutes, he performed dizzying antics on an illegally suspended wire – about four hundred metres above the streets of Manhattan and without a safety net or harness. Robert Zemeckis, the brains behind ‘Back to the Future’, brings the story of the French daredevil back to life in ‘The Walk’. A-list star Joseph Gordon-Levitt portrays the man who was arrested in 1974 for what would go down in history as the artistic crime of the century. Together with his mentor Papa Rudy (played by Ben Kingsley) and a group of accomplices, they overtook the Twin Towers in a manner reminiscent of a major bank robbery. As they watched Philippe dance between heaven and earth, the police were waiting for him on the ground, ready to arrest him.

With the help of pioneering 3D technology and visual effects that only really come to life on the biggest screen you can get, this biographical adventure really manages to scale the heights. Far more than being a truly visually stunning film, ‘The Walk’ is also a thrilling homage to superhuman daring, the pursuit of the impossible, Paris and New York of the seventies, and – last but not least – the WTC towers themselves.

Grâce à une technologie 3D révolutionnaire et des effets visuels parfaits sur grand écran, cette aventure biographique est un véritable exercice de haute voltige. EN In ‘The Ardennes’ a brutal home jacking goes hopelessly

wrong. Dave, one of the two robbers, manages to run off, leaving his brother Kenneth behind. Four years later, Kenneth is released from prison but a lot has changed over time. Dave has his life back on track and is trying to help Kenneth wherever possible, but is witnessing how his highly-strung brother tries to win back his ex-girlfriend Sylvie. ‘The Ardennes’ is an amazing and a rather unique mix of genre and arthouse cinema. This dark thriller is an uncut Flemish noir, not suitable for viewers who can’t take a little bloodshed, but highly recommended for anyone who wants to see a purebred filmmaker at work and enjoy the remarkable performances by Veerle Baetens, Kevin Janssens and Jeroen Perceval. Robin Pront: “As a young filmmaker I couldn’t imagine a better start for my first feature film. To open Film Fest Gent is the greatest honour you can achieve with your film in Belgium.”

‘Tank’, the latest short film by animation pioneer Raoul Servais, will have its world premiere at the 42nd Film Fest Gent. The short film is inspired by the poem ‘Le Tank’, written by PierreJean Jouve, about the new war machine that was first used by the British in World War I. Servais calls his work “a free interpretation of the first tank attack, describing the traumatic experience for the trench soldiers and the tank crew”.

FR Dans ‘D’Ardennen’ un cambriolage brutal tourne désespérément mal. Dave, l’un des deux voleurs, est contraint de laisser derrière lui son frère Kenneth. Quatre ans plus tard, Kenneth sort de prison et a beaucoup changé. Dave est à nouveau dans le droit chemin et tente d’aider son frère dès que possible, mais il observe avec tristesse l’incontrôlable Kenneth tenter de reconquérir son ex-petite amie Sylvie à tout prix. ‘D’Ardennen’ est un mélange étonnant de cinéma de genre et de cinéma d’auteur. Ce thriller sombre est un film noir flamand à l’état pur, à déconseiller aux spectateurs qui ne supportent pas la vue du sang, mais chaudement recommandé à ceux qui veulent voir un vrai cinéaste au travail et profiter des prestations étonnantes de Veerle Baetens, Kevin Janssens et Jeroen Perceval.

Robin Pront : « En tant que jeune cinéaste, je ne pouvais rêver d’un meilleur départ pour mon premier long métrage. Ouvrir le festival du film de Gand est le plus grand honneur dont un film peut bénéficier en Belgique. »

competition for Belgian students. All the students from the recognised film schools in Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels can enter the short film. A professional jury, consisting of Ely Dagher (director), Amira Daoudi (graphic designer), Charlotte De Bruyne (actress), Emmy Oost (producer), Mathias Sercu (actor), Dirk Van Extergem (festival director Offscreen) will be rewarding the best entry with the National Lottery Award for Best Belgian Student Short Film, to the value of €2000. The audience can also vote for their favourite film on the day, which will then win the ACE Audience Award. European Short Film competition

EN Film Fest Gent is also putting European short film talent in the spotlight and, as in previous years, is kicking off the competition to find the best European short film. This is being organised in collaboration with the European Film Academy and 14 other European film festivals, including Venice and Berlin. The talent selected as the winner in Ghent can then compete for the first prize next year: a screening of their short film at the European Film Awards Ceremony and the title of ‘Best European Short’. This winner will be selected by the international jury consisting of Sir Alan Parker, Caroline Strubbe, Franco Lolli, Boyd Van Hoeij and Marjane Satrapi.

This children’s film by the Walloon director Olivier Ringer tells the story of Cathy and her friend Margaux who have been asked to care for a duckling. They secretly set off in search of the perfect habitat for the creature. PROJECTION POUR AVEUGLES ET MALVOYANTS En collaboration avec l’ASBL Les Amis des Aveugles, le film ‘Les oiseaux de passage’ (‘Piepkuikens’) sera projeté avec audiodescription entre les dialogues.
