As I am writing this introduction, the schedule is now finally completed. Some major must-see films were added at the last minute, such as ‘Pasolini’ by Abel Ferrara, the director’s cut of Lars Von Trier’s ‘Nymphomaniac’ and the gripping French psycho killer film ‘La prochaine fois je viserai le coeur’ by Cédric Anger. Programmer Wim De Witte and I have seen over 1700 films at festivals, private screenings, on DVD or via streaming to finally select 107 feature films. Films that are - fortunately - too diverse and often too unique to be summed up in one word. One conclusion, however, is that they are a reflection of what is currently going on in cinema and today’s society. There are certainly some trends to be noticed: the advance of a documentary/fiction hybrid; the chilling thriller as a response to all the turmoil in these apocalyptic times; the vitality of French cinema, with young talent in front and behind the camera yet again creating a new nouvelle vague; the innovation in Flemish cinema, delivering us movies in diverse styles. The most important thing for us while selecting, was not to look for films that fit into a preconceived picture, but rather let ourselves be surprised and amazed by everything that came our way. The result, as you can see for yourself in this Knack Focus Special, is a celebration of cinema today in all its forms. A mix of author’s cinema and genre film. American indie movies and international arthouse film. Hyped films everyone is eagerly looking forward to, and titles you’ve never even heard of. Films by known masters (Jean-Luc Godard, Atom Egoyan, Mike Leigh, Zhang Yimou, Marco Bellocchio, Errol Moris, François Ozon, Bruno Dumont, Godfrey Reggio, Wim Wenders, Gregg Araki, Naomi Kawase) and up-and-coming young talent. Small, big and medium-sized movies, contenders for the Oscars and aesthetically innovating films. Poignant films that fly by in just 70 minutes and an epic saga that requires 338 minutes of your time (worth every minute): ‘From What is Before’ by Filipino slow cinema champion Lav Diaz. But also films with Brad Pitt, Isabelle Huppert, Jérémie Renier, Robert Duvall, Catherine Deneuve, Bill Murray, Gong Li, Guillaume Canet, Willem Dafoe, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Matthias Schoenaerts, Jessica Chastain, Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton and Robert Downey Jr. Film Fest Gent is also more than just a film festival. We offer you the great Fellini-Expo at Caermersklooster, showing that we are a festival that embraces the cinema of the future, while also cherishing the memory of film in the past. Film Fest in Vooruit explores the boundaries of the cinematic experience from a multimedia perspective through films, performances, lectures and concerts. And of course there are the many and diverse film-related concerts, culminating in the WSA Ceremony & Concert as a festive closing ceremony to the 41st edition of the festival. You will surely have noticed by now: it will by no means be easy to choose from the abundance of films and events during this twelve-day marathon. ‘The Loft’ has been in the making for quite some time now. In 2010 the remake was announced, followed by the shoot, in the summer of 2011. In 2012 word got out that Joel Silver, American mega-producer behind ‘The Matrix’-Trilogy, would release the film. Director Erik Van Looy: “We have come a long way in order to make ‘The Loft’, but opening Film Fest Gent definitely feels like coming home. Along with ‘The Alzheimer Case’ (‘De zaak Alzheimer’) this will be my second feature that will open the renowned festival, and I must say I’m quite proud. I’m already looking forward to the 14th of October and convinced that it will be a beautiful and exciting evening”.

‘The Loft’ a traversé un parcours assez impressionnant. Le remake, annoncé en 2010, a été tourné un an après, pendant l’été de 2011. En 2012, la nouvelle s’est ébruitée que l’américain Joel Silver (‘Matrix’-trilogie), l’un des plus grands producteurs de cinéma, voulait se charger du release, qui a été repoussé trois fois. Le réalisateur Erik Van Looy: « ‘The Loft’ fut une aventure de longue haleine, mais avec l’ouverture du Film Fest Gent, nous nous sentons de retour à la maison. Après ‘La Mémoire du Tueur’ (‘De Zaak Alzheimer’), il s’agit de mon deuxième film qui a l’honneur d’ouvrir ce prestigieux festival et j’en suis très fier. J’attends avec impatience le 14 octobre ».

EN The 41st edition of Film Fest Gent will open on Tuesday the 14th of October with ‘The Loft’, Erik Van Looy’s long-awaited American remake of the phenomenal success ‘Loft’ by Bart De Pauw and Erik Van Looy. This film tells the story of five married friends who secretly share a loft, where they receive their girlfriends and mistresses. An excellent scheme that turns into a nightmare, when one morning they find the body of an anonymous woman in the loft. Matthias Schoenaerts is the only actor from the original film that also stars as one of the leading roles in this remake. The other four friends are played by Karl Urban (‘Star Trek Into Darkness’), James Marsden (‘X-Men’, ‘2 Guns’), Wentworth Miller (‘Prison Break’) and Eric Stonestreet (‘Modern Family’).

FR La 41e édition du Film Fest Gent s’ouvrira le mardi 14 octobre avec ‘The Loft’, réalisé par Erik Van Looy. EN Alejandro González Iñárritu is back with an amazing film. Iñárritu, one of the best directors of his generation, directs this beautiful, absurd comedy. Michael Keaton, in a role of a lifetime, plays Riggan Thomson a washed-up celebrity, famous for his role of Birdman. In search of his glory days, he mounts a Broadway play with the help of his daughter Sam (Emma Stone), an actress and an idealistic producer. But Riggan is slowly losing his mind due to the pressure and a conflict with the protagonist of the play (Edward Norton). The Mexican filmmaker directed an incredible film, with a stellar cast who are on the top of their game. It’s difficult not to see the reference to ‘Batman’, but Michael Keaton’s performance is the highlight of the film. Impressive visually, because of the work of cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki (‘Gravity’), the film is visually already one of the greatest films of the year. The American press certainly appreciated Birdman when it opened the last Venice Film Festival. The Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu (‘Amores Perros’, ‘21 Grams’, ‘Babel’) delivers a surprising satire of modern celebrity culture and Hollywood’s current obsession with superheros.

FR Alejandro González Iñárritu, le réalisateur mexicain considéré par beaucoup comme l’un des metteurs en scène les plus doués de sa génération, nous revient, surprise, avec un film drôle, touchant, complètement absurde et surtout excellent. Dans le rôle principal, un Michael Keaton des grands jours. Le film relate l’histoire d’une ancienne vedette, Riggan Thomson à la recherche de reconnaissance. Pour ce faire il monte un spectacle à Broadway, avec l’aide de sa fille (Emma Stone) fraichement sortie d’une

cure de désintoxication, d’une actrice et d’un producteur farfelu. Petit à petit, Riggan commence à perdre la raison et à ne plus distinguer la réalité de la fiction, écrasé par la pression et par le conflit avec le protagoniste de la pièce (Edward Norton). Alejandro González Iñárritu signe ici son meilleur film, porté par l’excellente prestation de Michael Keaton. Il est difficile de ne pas faire de liens avec sa vraie vie et son rôle célèbre dans ‘Batman’. Visuellement magnifique, le film se classe dans le peloton de tête des très grands films de l’année. La presse cinématographique a bien su apprécier ‘Birdman’ lorsqu’il a ouvert la dernière édition du Venice Film Festival. Le metteur en scène mexicain Alejandro González Iñárritu ( ‘Amours Chiennes’, ‘21 Grammes’, ‘Babel’) nous livre après tout une satire inattendue de la culte contemporaine des célébrités et de l’obsession actuelle de Hollywood avec les super-héros.

EN François Ozon is not only an incredibly productive filmmaker, with 16 films in

17 years, but also a valued guest at Film Fest Gent. Ozon is a director who loves to change genres and styles (psychological dramas and burlesque comedies, but also dark dramatic and historical films) but always has recurring themes in his work. With ‘Une Nouvelle Amie’, an adaptation of the novel by Ruth Rendell, the filmmaker chose to work with French actor Romain Duris (‘L’Auberge Espagnol’) for the first time. The film follows Clair (Anaïs Demoustier, ‘Elles’) after the death of her best friend. She falls into a deep depression but a surprising discovery about the husband of her late best friend will change everything.

avec 16 films en 17 ans, mais aussi un invité très apprécié au Film Fest Gent. Malgré une filmographie qui mélange les genres, les tons (il passe d’un drame psychologique, aux comédies burlesques, mais aussi aux drames profonds et films historiques), on retrouve des thèmes récurrents dans son oeuvre. Pour ‘Une Nouvelle Amie’, adapté du roman de Ruth Rendell, il fait appel pour la première fois à Romain Duris (‘L’Auberge Espagnol’). L’histoire tourne autour de Claire (Anaïs Demoustier, ‘Elles’). A la suite du décès de sa meilleure amie Léa, Claire fait une profonde dépression. Une découverte surprenante au sujet du mari de son amie va lui redonner le goût de vivre. 16/10

Short film EUROPEAN SHORT FILM COMPETITION EN Film Fest Gent is also putting European short film talent in the spotlight and, as in previous years, is kicking off the competition to find the best European short film. In collaboration with the European Film Academy and 14 other European film festivals, including Venice and Berlin. The talent crowned the winner in Ghent can then compete for the first prize next year: a screening of their short film at the European Film Awards Ceremony and the title of ‘Best European Short’. This winner will be selected by the international jury consisting of Bret Easton Ellis, Sergei Loznitsa, Dana Linssen, Patrice Toye and Héloïse Godet. FR Le Film Fest Gent met également à l’honneur les talents européens du court métrage et, comme les années précédentes, donne le coup d’envoi de la course au prix du meilleur court métrage européen. Celle-ci est organisée en collaboration avec la European Film Academy, ainsi que 14 autres festivals européens de cinéma, dont celui de Venise et de Berlin. EN Fellini is not just a famous artist, he is a legend. Even people who have never set foot in a cinema know his name. The world he created is so recognisable and unique that he is one of the few film directors in history whose name has become an adjective: ‘Fellinian’. We all know the associations he brings to mind: a series of bizarre creatures – dwarfs, albinos, grotesquely obese ladies, blonde bombshells, caricaturesque bourgeois, well-rounded penguin nuns, hunchbacks, glamour girls obscenely rolling their tongues, depressed clowns and hypocritical priests. FR Plus qu’un artiste renommé, Fellini est une véritable icône. Même ceux qui ne mettent jamais les pieds dans un cinéma connaissent son nom. L’univers qu’il a créé est si particulier et unique qu’il est l’un des rares réalisateurs dont le nom a donné naissance à un adjectif: «fellinien». Concert ROTA/FELLINI EN No one has set the world of a film director to music as successfully as Nino Rota did for the work of Federico Fellini. Simply hearing the first notes is enough to conjure up scenes by the Italian maestro. The first part of the concert focuses on Rota’s compositions for Fellini, while the second part showcases Rota’s collaboration with Francis Ford Coppola, Franco Zeffirelli and Luchino Visconti. GOBLIN PLAYS SUSPIRIA + AFTERPARTY EN Dario Argento’s baroque and surreal horror classic ‘Suspiria’ from 1977 is one of the highlights of his oeuvre and of the horror genre in general. A stylised exercise in dream logic with some absurd and gruesome set pieces that once seen, can never be forgotten. One of the key components of the success of ‘Suspiria’ was the soundtrack of Italian prog rock band Goblin, who previously wrote the soundtracks for Argento’s classic ‘Profondo Rosso’ and George A. Romero’s ‘Dawn of the Dead’. Goblin chief and keyboard player Claudio Simonetti has put together a new version of Goblin and will perform the soundtrack live at the film screening of ‘Suspiria’ in Vooruit’s Theaterzaal. After the film screening, there will be a DJ set in the bar by Spencer Hickman, better known as the man behind the soundtrack reissue label Death Waltz.

FR Baroque et surréaliste, le classique de l’horreur ‘Suspiria’ de Dario Argento, sorti en 1977, marque l’un des temps forts de son œuvre et du genre de l’horreur en général. Un exercice stylisé dans la logique du rêve avec quelques scènes absurdes et effrayantes qui sont inoubliables. EN Search for life and love. After his years at the crazy Nature Theatre of Oklahoma in New York, Zachary Oberzan went solo. He is a man of many talents: besides acting he also knows his way around the film and music scene. In ‘Tell Me Love Is Real’, Oberzan digs into his own past. In the winter of 2012, he almost collapsed to an overdose of Xanax in a hotel room. With great humour and the spirits of Amelia Earhart, Serge Gainsbourg and Bruce Lee, he pushes himself to the limit, thus building a bridge to the audience. FR À la recherche de la vie et de l’amour. Invited by Film Fest Gent, Vooruit and Ghent’s Internet live stream television station and art collective Stroom, Wolfers composed a new soundtrack for one of his favourite movies; Werner Herzog’s ‘Aguirre, Der Zorn Gottes’. Legowelt has a shortened, more visually oriented version of this film and he will perform the soundtrack live. After the film, there will be a party in Vooruit’s Balzaal with not only Legowelt, but also Chris Ferreira and Nosedrip.

FR Danny Wolfers est un producteur néerlandais de musique électronique et un DJ mieux connu sous le nom de Legowelt. Sur demande du Film Fest Gent, du Vooruit et de la chaîne gantoise de télévision en streaming sur Internet et du collectif d’art Stroom, Wolfers a composé une nouvelle bande originale pour l’un de ses films préférés ; ‘Aguirre, la colère de Dieu’ de Werner Herzog. Legowelt propose une version plus courte, mais plus orientée d’un point de vue visuel, de ce film dont il jouera la bande originale en direct. World Soundtrack Awards CLIFF MARTINEZ EN In line with tradition, the 41st edition of Film Fest Gent will end with a festive event, the World Soundtrack Awards Ceremony & Concert, the annual film music event that has now reached its 14th edition. This year’s guest of honour is Cliff Martinez, American film music composer and former drummer of the rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers. The concert will mainly focus on his long-term collaboration with Steven Soderbergh, for whom he is the longstanding composer (‘Sex, Lies and Videotape’, ‘Traffic’, ‘Kafka’, ‘Contagion’, ‘The Limey’ and ‘Solaris’). Needless to say, the programme also includes his cult score for ‘Only God Forgives’ (starring Ryan Gosling) by Nicolas Winding Refn. See and hear the man who once played his drums for 72 hours straight, and who now continues to push the boundaries of film music with his elegant and atmospheric mix of meditative melodies, orchestral elements, electro sounds, guitar samples and techno club music. The WSA also welcomes Dan Romer, who was crowned Discovery of 2013. The former frontman and acoustic guitar player of indie pop-rock band Fire Flies earned this title for his moving score for ‘Beasts of the Southern Wild’, by director Benh Zeitlin. During the WSA concert, Francis Lai will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding career in film music. Lai became world famous with ‘A man and a woman’ (1966), his first score for a film by Claude Lelouch. Additionally Jeff Neve’s captivating music for the prestigious drama series ‘In Flanders Fields’ will also be getting some deserved attention in the Flemish Section.

Bret Easton Ellis is one of the most important contemporary American writers, whose novels (‘Less than Zero’, ‘The Informers’) all received film adaptions.
