New shape. Same old brilliant cinema. If changing the shape of the entire printed programme was a sneaky Marketing Dept. ploy to force me to write less, it can already be seen as a major success. But fear ye not, dear reader, for I shall not be silenced! I’ll just have to be a bit more succinct, that’s all… Joking apart (there was a joke in there somewhere), I hope the new shape is to your liking. We just decided it was time for a change (which, for the record, has my full blessing!) and it had nothing at all whatever to do with the fact that standard A5 is considerably cheaper than ‘sixmo’ (as I was once told the old shape was called). I looked back and this document had been ‘sixmo’ since October 1999! Last century! Don’t let it now be said we’re stuck in our ways. Limited space now dictates we think of below as a kind of “if you only see three things in this programme” type routine, even though we fully understand you are likely to want to see more. This is difficult, what to choose? Tale of Tales is a 17th century adult fairy tale adaptation like you will never have seen before – “Python meets Pasolini” as The Telegraph most aptly put it; also Italian, Suburra is a super-slick, muscular and hugely cinematic tale of crime and corruption in contemporary Rome; and Adapting Miss Highsmith kicks off our nationally-touring season of the very best film adaptations of the titular author, some well known, some not, all great! Rod White, Head of Filmhouse

After losing sight, John Hull knew that if he did not try to understand blindness it would destroy him. In 1983, he began keeping an audio diary. Expanding on the award-winning short film of the same name, Notes on Blindness takes a creative approach to the documentary form, using cinema to complement these remarkable audio recordings. The result is a poetic and intimate story of loss, rebirth and transformation, documenting John’s extraordinary journey into ”a world beyond sight”.
A stunning new imagining of the Disney classic adventure - in which an orphan boy called Mowgli (Neel Sethi) is raised in the wilderness by wolves, a bear and a panther. He sets out on a journey across the jungle, hunted by the fearsome Shere Khan (Idris Elba) and encountering an array of recognisable characters along the way...

The Sicilian island of Lampedusa lies around 200km off the southern coast of Italy and has been the focus of global news in recent years as the first port of call for hundreds of thousands of migrants arriving from Africa and the Middle East. Director Gianfranco Rosi spent months living with locals on Lampedusa as hundreds of people reached its shores. Placing focus on a small group of characters and with an emphasis on quiet observation, Fire at Sea gives us astonishing insight into this deeply human tragedy.
Michael Moore sets off for an international conquest. Styling himself as a friendly invader of sorts, the affable Moore seeks to find out why other countries excel in certain areas - gender equality, prisons, education, nutrition - while the United States struggle. His journey takes him across Europe and North Africa, meeting everyone from government officials to Norwegian inmates and Where to Invade Next is a funny, thought-provoking watch for cinemagoers of all nations to consider.

Ken Loach’s first feature film, Poor Cow, is a heart-rending adaptation of Nell Dunn’s novel told with the director’s signature improvised style, dry wit and refusal of sentimentality. Joy (Carol White) leaves home at 18 years old to marry Tom (John Bindon), with whom she has a son. This marks the first of a series of poor decisions and circumstances outside of her control as she contends with domestic abuse, single parenthood and dead-end jobs.
Six men - inexplicably on a yacht in the middle of the Aegean Sea - begin a game that tests their fortitude, endurance and manhood, to establish who is “The Best in General”. The victor’s prize will be a signet ring - the Chevalier. Screening as part of The First World War in Cinema, a four-year series of films, programmed in association with the University of Edinburgh, that relate to the First World War, some timed to coincide with the real events of 100 years ago and others which are not tied to specific dates.

Adapting Miss Highsmith Described by Graham Greene as the ‘poet of apprehension’, Patricia Highsmith specialised in tightly plotted thrillers exploring the fear, jealousy, guilt and violence bubbling under the surface of outwardly civilised characters. Neurotic men dominate her fiction, antiheroes with a plethora of dark secrets and obsessions, though she was equally capable of studies of great sensitivity and tenderness, as evidenced by one of her few forays outside the thriller genre, Carol. The artistry and intelligence of her work is widely considered to have transcended the thriller genre and rival that of mainstream literature, and has made for much compelling cinema. This season showcases the very best of them…
Strangers on a Train
Plein Soleil
Fri 8 & Sat 9 Jul
Fri 15 to Sun 17 Jul
Alfred Hitchcock • USA 1951 • 1h43m • Digital • PG • Cast: Farley Granger, Robert Walker, Ruth Roman, Leo G Carroll.
René Clément • France/Italy 1960 • 1h59m • Digital • French, Italian and English with English subtitles • PG - Contains mild violence Cast: Alain Delon, Maurice Ronet, Marie Laforêt, Erno Crisa.
Often seen as Alfred Hitchcock’s return to form, Strangers on a Train was adapted from Highsmith’s debut novel, published just a couple of months after her 29th birthday. Two young men whose chance meeting on a train journey leads to a supposedly foolproof murder swap...
In the same year he starred in Luchino Visconti’s family drama Rocco and His Brothers, Alain Delon took on the role of Highsmith’s most famous character, the eponymous, ice-cold sociopath in the sun-soaked adaptation of The Talented Mr Ripley.

Hossein Amini’s accomplished take on Highsmith’s ninth novel sees American fraudster Chester McFarland (Viggo Mortensen) and his wife (Kirsten Dunst) encounter ex-pat tour guide Rydal Keener (Oscar Isaac) while holidaying in Greece. When Chester’s criminal past catches up with them, Rydal agrees to help the couple evade the authorities.
Die Gläserne Zelle
Nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 51st Academy Awards®, Hans W. Geissendörfer’s adaptation features Helmut Griem as an architect who’s released from prison after serving time for a crime he didn’t commit. Struggling to find work and troubled by his wife’s relationship with his lawyer, he soon finds that - like many a Highsmithian protagonist - his life is tumbling dangerously out of control.

1h20m •12A
Patricia Highsmith (1921-1995) was one of the greatest crime and suspense writers of the 20th century. Her novels were critically and commercially acclaimed and inspired major filmmakers, past and present, from Hitchcock to Todd Haynes. Adrian Wootton, CEO of Film London, explores Highsmith’s colourful life, her extraordinary career and the films of her stories with slides and film clips. £5/£4
Already freely adapted by Wim Wenders as The American Friend, Highsmith’s third Tom Ripley novel gets a straighter reworking courtesy of Liliana Cavani, the Italian director most famous for her 1974 succès de scandale The Night Porter. John Malkovich takes on the lead role, while Dougray Scott plays the terminally ill framer tangled up in Ripley’s schemes. With a strong supporting cast including Ray Winstone and Chiara Caselli, the film also boasts an atmospheric score by Ennio Morricone.

An adaptation of one of Highsmith‘s most intensely personal works - her second (pseudonymously published) novel The Price of Salt - Todd Haynes’ film recently came top in a BFI poll of the Best LGBT Films of All Time. It tells of the affair between an elegant middle-class woman called Carol (Cate Blanchett) and Therese (Rooney Mara), a young photographer who works in a NYC department store. Evocatively shot on Super 16mm, the film is also a masterclass in costume and production design.

Expanding on footage shot of progressive jazz enigma Thelonious Monk for West German television in the late 1960s, Charlotte Zwerin (Gimme Shelter) was enlisted to adapt these raw outtakes - rare in their extraordinary intimacy - as the focus on a new documentary in 1988. A lively film, with incredible performance footage and newly shot interviews with friends and family, Straight, No Chaser was described by the New York Times as “some of the most valuable jazz ever shot”.

Louis Malle • France 1958 • 1h29m • Digital • French with English subtitles • PG - Contains mild language and violence • Cast: Jeanne Moreau, Maurice Ronet, Georges Poujouly, Yori Bertin, Jean Wall.
In one of the seminal French films of the 1950s, a veteran of the Indo-China and Algerian Wars (Maurice Ronet) and his lover (Jeanne Moreau) plan the murder of her arms-manufacturer husband. But on his way from the crime scene he’s trapped in a lift. Influenced by Hitchcock and Bresson, Malle consciously puts his individual stamp on an adaptation of an ingenious but otherwise conventional noir, much influenced by Double Indemnity. Miles Davis was persuaded to provide a superb score improvised in a single night.
Bayou Maharajah Mon 1 & Tue 2 Aug Lily Keber • USA 2013 • 1h38m • Digital • cert tbc • Documentary
Bayou Maharajah explores the life and music of New Orleans piano legend James Booker, the man Dr. John described as “the best black, gay, one-eyed junkie piano genius New Orleans has ever produced.” A brilliant pianist, his eccentricities and showmanship belied a life of struggle, prejudice, and isolation. With rare concert footage, personal photos and exclusive interviews, the film paints a portrait of this overlooked genius.
