Introduction

MAD MAX: FURY ROAD

THE THIRD MAN

THE LEGEND OF BARNEY THOMSON

Film reviews, and the negative side of positivity… I do wish film critics and reviewers would stop writing positive reviews for bad* films. I know how naïve and daft that sounds, given that the appreciation of cinema is as much in the eye of the beholder as anything else, but it sure makes my job harder (bless...). Good reviews raise expectations across the board: of the people selling them and of the people thinking they might want to watch them. Consequently, us poor exhibitors get pressure to show these bad* films... from both ends! Conversely, almost, critics/reviewers are often very harsh on films that, actually, will be very well thought of by large swathes of the cinemagoing public, though those films are more likely to be review-proof. It’s a minefield! (*When I say bad films, I am referring to films I would consider to be not good... objectivity, hopefully, applied!) It’s all very well us showing any film for which a positive review can be found, but – beyond the fact there would be far too many of them – we have to think about whether, ultimately, you would thank us for it. Hopefully, we only rarely get that wrong. Most critics and reviewers don’t often consider that which we simply must: what might audiences make of the film? It’s very easy to write a glowing review demonstrating your extraordinary insight and singular intelligence, when you’re never likely to be held to direct account for your judgement in a way an admission-charging, ‘curated’ cinema like this one, believe you me, often is. And if there’s a film you’ve read a few decent reviews of that you think might tickle your fancy, and we’re not showing it, it’s likely because we think those reviews are... well... misleading. So, Dear Film Reviewer, spare a thought for us poor film programmers when you’re working on your legacy and reputation as iconoclast, controversialist or visionary aesthete. Someone somewhere is likely ‘picking up the tab’ for your largesse! And now July’s films, at least one of which you will currently not find any reviews for anywhere, so ‘hot off the press’ is it... Cleanse your ‘arthouse’ palate immediately post-EIFF with the best blockbuster re-boot in many a year, Mad Max: Fury Road (we’ve thrown on the first two Mel Gibson ones too, for good measure), before getting all serious again with Alex Gibney’s study of the Church of Scientology, Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief. While you’re in the mood for documentary, check out Asif (Senna) Kapadia’s quite brilliant Amy, which details, in similar style to Senna, the all-too-brief life and untimely death of the incredible Amy Winehouse; or even Wim Wenders’ wonderful The Salt of the Earth, a profile of social documentary photographer (and oh so much more) Sebastião Salgado; or both! By now you’ll be longing for some narrative fiction I’m sure, so soar to the musical heights of Handel’s Messiah with the boys in The Choir (under the tutelage of Dustin Hoffman), and then have a right good laugh with Robert Carlyle’s directorial debut, the marvellous, Glasgow-set, jet-black comedy (and EIFF’s recent opening film), The Legend of Barney Thomson. If that’s all a bit too ‘current’ for you, and you subscribe to the view of our sometime chief projectionist that “all the best films have already been made”, the month is spread through with some classics from Orson Welles (in this his centenary year), including restorations of two of the best films ever made, The Third Man and Touch of Evil (two films that are NEVER EVER out of my top 5 of all time) and the rarely seen, finally available, Mr Welles’ favourite of all his films, Chimes at Midnight. There, not a bad* film among them! Rod White, Head of Filmhouse

George Miller • Australia/USA 2015 • 2h • Digital 15 - Contains strong violence, threat Cast: Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Hugh Keays-Byrne, Josh Helman, Nathan Jones.

Amir Amirani • UK 2014 • 1h44m • Digital • 12A - Contains moderate injury detail, partially obscured strong language Documentary featuring Damon Albarn, Brian Eno, Danny Glover, Ken Loach, Noam Chomsky, Tony Benn.

The future truly belongs to the mad. Thirty years after the release of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, we return to the barren, post-apocalyptic wasteland - where water is scarce and gasoline sacred - for more frenetic vehicular action. Tom Hardy dons the leather shoulder pad and has honed his thousandyard-stare as the titular hero, once again embroiled in a furious struggle for justice in the desert wilds. This time, alongside fierce warrior Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) and irradiated ‘War Boy’ Nux (Nicholas Hoult), he wages war on the oppressive, grotesque cult leader, Immortan Joe (played by Hugh Keays-Byrne, who also played the main antagonist in the first Mad Max). Having freed the tyrant’s imprisoned wives (Zoë Kravitz, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Riley Keough, Abbey Lee, Courtney Eaton), they find themselves pursued by his vicious horde. As they learn to trust one another, their fight for survival becomes a quest for redemption, punctuated by jaw-dropping action, visceral thrills and stunningly realised production design.

“A powerful and (...) moving tribute to organised dissent and the power of the people.” - Screen Daily On February 15 2003, millions of people, in over 800 cities across the world, marched against the impending invasion of Iraq, seen as a pretext for US and UK geo-political gain. The largest mobilisation in human history - reported as a failure - is powerfully retold in this moving and dramatic film, illustrative of the movement as a tipping point for global social change, and a devastating critique of the state of democracy today. With gripping contributions from a remarkable cast including Damon Albarn, Danny Glover, Richard Branson, Noam Chomsky, Ken Loach, Tony Benn, Jesse Jackson, Tariq Ali and Hans Blix, We Are Many is a vital record for vigilance against present and future wars.

Joshua Oppenheimer • Denmark/Indonesia/Norway/Finland/UK 2014 • 1h43m • Digital • Indonesian and Javanese with English subtitles 15 - Contains graphic descriptions of killings and torture Documentary

Following the filming of his landmark The Act of Killing - in which perpetrators of the 1965 Indonesian genocide recreated past their atrocities - director Joshua Oppenheimer turned his gaze to a single victim, a plantation worker called Ramli. In looking through the footage shot by Oppenheimer (and his anonymous Indonesian collaborators), Ramli’s family discover the identity of the men who killed him. Determined to finally break the silence and fear under which his community continues to live, Ramli’s younger brother, Adi, sets out to confront the men responsible for his murder.

Showing from Fri 3 Jul Alex Gibney • USA 2015 • 1h59m • Digital • cert tbc Documentary

The final completed film of stars Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe is an elegy for the death of the Old West from writer Arthur Miller and director John Huston. Gable stars as Gay Langland, an aging hand travelling the byways and working at rodeos with his two comrades, Guido (Eli Wallach) and young Perce Howland (Montgomery Clift). The three men come up with a plan to corral some misfit mustangs and sell them for dog food, but Gay’s new girlfriend Roslyn Taber (Marilyn Monroe), a high-minded ex-stripper who has just divorced her husband in Reno, is appalled by the plan.

Acclaimed documentarian Alex Gibney is famed for delving into the innermost dealings of major institutions. From ‘big oil’ to WikiLeaks, his films shine an exploratory light on the cultures and environments that foster these high-profile stories. Inspired by Lawrence Wright’s 2013 book of the same name, Going Clear sees Gibney turn his attention to the strange and storied history of the Church of Scientology. Showcasing remarkable testimonies from former members, including Oscar-winning director Paul Haggis, the film blends these experiences with fascinating archival material to produce a rather chilling exposé.

In an Iranian ghost town, a lonely vampire stalks her prey. Her victims are Bad City’s most unsavoury men: those who mistakenly take as granted the submissiveness of a chador-cloaked woman like herself. But things suddenly change when she encounters Arash, a cat-loving hipster whose respect for the codes of honour between men and women throws her killer instincts off-balance. Shot through by striking black-and-white cinematography, Ana Lily Amirpour’s debut feature expertly fuses disparate elements of horror, film noir and Westerns. It also features an extraordinary soundtrack, with music ranging from ‘80s New Wave to the Middle Eastern fusion beats of Bei Ru and the underground Iranian rock of Radio Tehran and Kiosk.

Showing from Fri 3 Jul Thomas Cailley • France 2014 • 1h38m • Digital • French with English subtitles • 15 - Contains strong language, moderate sex Cast: Adèle Haenel, Kévin Azaïs, Antoine Laurent, Brigitte Roüan

An energetic crowd-pleasing comedy, surely destined for an English-language remake. Easy-going Arnaud has few plans for his summer, other than helping his brother with the family carpentry business. Whilst on a job he meets an enigmatic girl, Madeleine, and is attracted to her somewhat domineering personality. When she signs up for an army training course, Arnaud follows suit, in the hope of getting to know her better.

In 1947, the long-retired Sherlock Holmes (Ian McKellen) lives out his days on the south coast of England, tending to his beloved beehives and living down the legend created by his now-estranged friend, Dr Watson. As his once-fêted memory fades away, he attempts to piece together a part of his own past - the reason why he abandoned London and his career almost three decades before. With Mr Holmes, director Bill Condon (Gods and Monsters) crafts a Sherlock story only tangentially dedicated to serpentine sleuthing. Instead, he and McKellen together craft the very human story of a 93-year-old detective desperately trying to reconnect with lost recollections, and at last facing the mistakes made over a long career.

Famously, MGM virtually disowned Browning’s masterpiece, so that it remained unseen here until the 60s. That’s testament, surely, both to its sheer dramatic power and to the material itself: a group of circus ‘freaks’ decide to exact revenge on a trapeze artist and her strongman lover who have been plotting together against one of their number, a relatively wealthy midget infatuated with the acrobat. Browning’s unsentimental sympathies for both his cast and the characters they play are immediately evident in his matter-of-fact, non-voyeuristic depiction of their lives and in the story’s celebration of their strong sense of solidarity. The film combines moral outrage with cinematic expertise to brilliant effect. A genuine one-off, and quite unforgettable.

Based on ancient Celtic myths, this stunningly beautiful animated feature is the soulful and magical tale of a brother and sister on an adventure to save the spirit world. Following their mother’s mysterious disappearance, Saoirse (O’Connell) and her brother Ben (Rawle) live with their distraught father (Gleeson) by the sea. With Saoirse still yet to utter her first word, Ben’s frustrations give way to wonder as he discovers that his sister is a selkie - a mythical changeling who can turn into a seal.

An uplifting drama that truly finds its voice through impressive choral performances, this latest feature from François Girard (The Red Violin) takes familiar themes - a troubled musical prodigy pushed to fulfil his potential and produces something rather more engaging. The debuting Garrett Wareing is supported by an excellent understated performance from Dustin Hoffman as the head choirmaster. Coupled with the myriad talents of Kathy Bates, Josh Lucas, Debra Winger and Eddie Izzard, The Choir hits the emotional highnotes with aplomb. Asif Kapadia • UK 2015 • 2h3m • Digital 15 - Contains very strong language, strong drug languages Documentary

Beginning in 1975, a French police magistrate (The Artist’s Jean Dujardin) works tirelessly over six years to help the drug-addicted youth of Marseilles. Through them, he also hopes to build his case against an elusive heroin kingpin, who remains untouchable thanks to his network of ruthless and violent underlings. Buoyed by sweeping, stylised setpieces which have drawn comparison to Tarantino and Scorsese, this compelling crime drama more than justifies its title’s knowing nod to William Friedkin’s Oscar-winning classic The French Connection (which screens on 27 July, see page 21).

This new film by Olivier Assayas (Summer Hours, Carlos) follows Maria Enders (Juliette Binoche), an internationally-acclaimed actress whose breakthrough role was playing Sigrid, a young woman who seduces and abandons her older female boss, in the play and film versions of Maloja Snake. Invited after 20 years to perform in a revival of the play, she finds herself now cast as the older woman, with Jo-Ann Ellis (Chloë Grace Moretz), a young Hollywood starlet with a penchant for scandal, set to play Sigrid. Beginning rehearsals, the pair travel to the remote Sils Maria region of the Alps, where Maria finds herself face to face with an ambiguously charming woman - one who seems, in many ways, to be an unsettling reflection of herself.

An absorbing, moving and insightful documentary from Asif Kapadia (who directed Oscar-winning documentary Senna) that charts the amazing highs and terrible lows in the life of the wonderfully talented but terribly troubled Amy Winehouse, who died in 2011. Great use of home video, camera phones, archive footage and interviews combine to craft a mesmerising - and often very sad - film brimming with magical musical moments, offering a remarkable portrait of a wonderful talent. Amy received its UK Première at the Edinburgh International Film Festival 2015.

The Terminator Fri 24 to Sun 26 Jul James Cameron • UK/USA 1984 • 1h47m • Digital English and Spanish with English subtitles 15 - Contains strong language, moderate horror, violence Cast: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Biehn, Linda Hamilton

In the year 2029, humanity is all but extinct. Pockets of survivors remain, living either as slaves or as part of the ragtag resistance movement fighting to overthrow their cruel robot overlords. From these ruins, two soldiers are sent back in time to 1984, both intent on influencing the outcome of the conflict to come. One is a human guerrilla fighter; the other, an unstoppable (and ripped) T-800 killing machine. THE LEGEND OF BARNEY THOMSON

NEWRELEASE

The Legend of Barney Thomson Showing from Fri 24 Jul Robert Carlyle • UK 2015 • 1h33m • Digital • cert tbc Cast: Robert Carlyle, Emma Thompson, Ray Winstone, Tom Courtenay, Martin Compston.

A delightful jet-black comedy about a downtrodden barber whose mundane life is turned upside down when he accidentally turns killer. Based on a novel by Douglas Lindsay – the first of seven books about Barney Thomson – the film was shot in Glasgow, with the city a vibrant and vital backdrop to the hilariously black story. Locations include the East End (where the barber shop is located), Shawfield dog track and the Barrowlands, which doubles as the bingo hall where Barney’s controlling mother Cemolina spends quality time. Emma Thompson is a revelation as the mother, complete with Glaswegian accent and a serious amount of make-up to help transform her into a truly memorable character. Robert Carlyle directs (his feature debut) and plays the lead alongside the hilariously fierce Thompson, Martin Compston as a rival barber and Ray Winstone as a fishout-of-water London cop exasperated by his Scottish colleagues. We are delighted to screen The Legend of Barney Thomson following its World Première at the Opening Night of Edinburgh International Film Festival 2015. MAIN FEATURES CONTINUE ON PAGE 14

SLOW WEST

LA GRANDE BOUFFE

MAYBEYOUMISSED

Slow West Showing from Fri 31 Jul John Maclean • UK/New Zealand 2015 • 1h24m • Digital 15 - Contains strong violence Cast: Kodi Smit-McPhee, Michael Fassbender, Caren Pistorius, Ben Mendelsohn, Rory McCann.

When the aristocratic Jay Cavendish (Kodi Smit-McPhee) leaves Scotland in pursuit of his lost love, Rose (Caren Pistorius), the poetry-quoting youth swiftly finds himself adrift in the lawless American West. Taken under the protection of mysterious traveller Silas Selleck (Michael Fassbender), the pair trek across the rough wilderness, pursued by the bounty hunters who are also looking to track down Rose’s family. A vivid new addition to the recent renaissance of the Western genre, Slow West is the stunningly assured debut from director John Maclean, a distinguished BAFTA-winning short filmmaker, former member of influential Scottish groups The Beta Band and The Aliens, and graduate of the Edinburgh College of Art.

La grande bouffe Blow Out

Tue 4 to Thu 6 Aug Marco Ferreri • France/Italy 1973 • 2h10m • Digital • French and Italian with English subtitles • 18 - Contains strong sex Cast: Marcello Mastroianni, Michel Piccoli, Philippe Noiret, Ugo Tognazzi, Andréa Ferréol.

A judge, a television producer, a pilot and a chef have, for whatever reason, decided life has become bland. Their solution is to shuffle off this mortal coil via a grand blow-out. But their weapon of choice is not the rope, the blade or the bullet - for these seemingly successful men, their end is to come via the continuous consumption of food, drink and sex over a weekend. A study of stoic, sickening self-indulgence that takes a swipe at the French bourgeoisie with a compelling mix of humour

A FULLER LIFE

MAYBEYOUMISSED

A Fuller Life Wed 5 & Thu 6 Aug Samantha Fuller • USA 2013 • 1h20m • Digital 15 - Contains infrequent references to rape and sexual assault Documentary featuring William Friedkin, Monte Hellman, Buck Henry, Tim Roth, Constance Towers, Wim Wenders.

A gripping tribute to a true American maverick. His body of work as a director, writer and producer is one of the most radical and exhilarating in the history of American cinema. Orson Welles

MAGICIAN: THE ASTONISHING LIFE...

TOUCH OF EVIL

A Touch of Orson 6 May 2015 marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of Orson Welles - director, actor, producer, author, screenwriter, phenom. Prodigously talented as a boy, his interest in and knowledge of literature, theatre, music and magic went hand-in-hand with his precocious intelligence. By his late teens he had travelled across the Atlantic, toured Ireland and forged a career in the theatre (famously started by talking his way into a production at the Gate Theatre, Dublin), before returning to the United States to become the “boy wonder” of New York’s theatrical stage. Acclaim, controversy and a TIME magazine cover at 23 followed, along with infamous radio productions and an unprecented two-film deal with RKO leading to the incomparable Citizen Kane.

THE THIRD MAN

NEWRELEASE

Magician: The Astonishing Life and Work of Orson Welles Sat 4 & Sun 5 Jul Chuck Workman • USA 2014 • 1h31m • Digital • 12A - Contains infrequent strong language, moderate sexualised nudity Documentary featuring Peter Bogdanovich, Oja Kodar, Jeanne Moreau, Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Julie Taymor.

The extraordinary tale of how a precocious prodigy from Wisconsin caused a stir in the worlds of theatre, radio and cinema all before his 26th birthday, then spent the rest of his life trying to live up to his own reputation. In the process, he found himself stymied as much by distrustful studios and reluctant funders as by his own stubborn unwillingness to compromise the artistic vision which, today, is seen as possessed of an unfailing foresight. This is the story of Orson Welles - and, as the man himself said, it’s all true.

Touch of Evil

Studio favour would prove short-lived, however (thanks, in part, to William Randolph Hearst), and the meddling money-men would sadly compromise much of Welles’ directorial work.

Showing from Fri 10 Jul

Despite this, his creative vision and immense on-screen talent are still so evident, in his own productions and the films of others. As Jean-Luc Godard put it: “Everyone will always owe him everything”.

Self-righteous Mexican narcotics cop Vargas (Charlton Heston) hits the border hell-hole of Los Robles, and goes up against Welles’ local colossus of law enforcement, Hank Quinlan - a cop who won’t stop short of fabricating evidence to back up his (invariably correct) intuition. Morally ambiguous, flawed, and quite, quite brilliant.

THE THIRD MAN

RESTOREDCLASSIC

The Third Man Showing from Fri 17 Jul Carol Reed • UK 1949 • 1h45m • Digital • PG - Contains mild threat Cast: Joseph Cotten, Alida Valli, Orson Welles, Trevor Howard, Bernard Lee.

Summoned to occupied post-war Vienna by his old friend Harry Lime (Orson Welles), brash American pulp writer Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten) arrives to find his old chum being widely mourned, especially by the actress Anna (Alida Valli), though less so by British Major Calloway (Trevor Howard). In this quartered, ruined, double-talking city, however, it’s as well to take nothing at face value... The Third Man remains among the most consummate of British thrillers: Reed and Greene’s sardonic vision of smiling corruption is deliciously realised with superb location work, a roster of seasoned Viennese performers and Anton Karas’ jaunty zither score. This stunning 4K restoration (based on a 4K scan) was handled by the Deluxe laboratory in the UK on behalf of STUDIOCANAL.

Orson Welles • USA 1958 • 1h51m • Digital 12A - Contains moderate violence, threat, drug references Cast: Orson Welles, Charlton Heston, Janet Leigh, Marlene Dietrich, Akim Tamiroff.

Orson Welles • USA 1947 • 1h31m • Digital PG - Contains mild violence, scenes of smoking Cast: Rita Hayworth, Orson Welles, Everett Sloane, Glenn Anders, Ted de Corsia.

Orson Welles • USA 1942 • 1h28m • 35mm • U Cast: Joseph Cotten, Dolores Costello, Anne Baxter, Tim Holt, Agnes Moorehead.

Orson Welles • USA 1946 • 1h35m • Digital PG - Contains mild violence Cast: Edward G Robinson, Loretta Young, Orson Welles, Philip Merivale, Richard Long.

Welles’ unsettling 1947 noir, starring his then-wife, Rita Hayworth. The director plays an Irish sailor who accompanies a beautiful woman (Hayworth) and her husband on a sea cruise, and becomes a pawn in a game of murder. Don’t attempt to follow the plot too closely (studio boss Harry Cohn offered a reward to anyone who could explain it to him), just revel in the dazzling visuals and Welles’ tongue-in-cheek approach to storytelling.

Chimes at Midnight Fri 31 Jul to Mon 3 Aug Orson Welles • France/Spain/Switzerland 1965 • 1h53m • Digital PG - Contains moderate violence Cast: Orson Welles, Jeanne Moreau, Margaret Rutherford, John Gielgud, Marina Vlady.

The somewhat buffoonish recurring character Falstaff was described by Orson Welles as “Shakespeare’s greatest creation”. Often directly compared to him, particularly in his later years, his connection to the character is perhaps one of the most organic in all of cinema. Sir John Falstaff is re-imagined and resplendent through Welles’ vision and performance in this portmanteau of five of The Bard’s plays. The comedy and warmth remain but, inevitably and with great poignancy, these give way to tragedy.

Hacked about by a confused RKO, Welles’ second film still looks a masterpiece, astounding for its almost magical re-creation of a gentler age when cars were still a nightmare of the future and the Ambersons felt safe in their mansion on the edge of town. Right from the wryly comic opening, detailing changes in fashions and the family’s exalted status, Welles takes an ambivalent view of the way the quality of life would change under the impact of a new industrial age, stressing the strength of community as evidenced in the old order while admitting to its rampant snobbery and petty sense of manners. With immaculate period reconstruction, a stirring score by Bernard Herrmann, and virtuoso acting shot in long, elegant takes, it remains the director’s most moving film.

Welles’ third film is a hugely enjoyable thriller, as Wilson (Edward G Robinson) from the Allied War Crimes Commission patiently stalks a former top Nazi (Welles), now ensconced as a prep school teacher in a small Connecticut town and newly married to the innocent Mary (Loretta Young). Studded with great scenes like the stranger’s furtive flight through the dockyards and the murder in the woods with boys streaming by on a paperchase.

Orlando/Mad Max

ORLANDO

MAD MAX

OVERTHERAINBOW

Over the Rainbow is Filmhouse’s monthly screening strand for new and classic queer cinema and events. In July, we’ve the chance to make our first retrospective selection: Sally Potter’s gorgeous Orlando.

Orlando Sat 25 & Sun 26 Jul Sally Potter • UK/Russia/Italy/France/Netherlands 1992 • 1h30m 35mm • English and French with English subtitles • PG Cast: Tilda Swinton, Billy Zane, Quentin Crisp, Charlotte Valandrey, John Wood.

Combining a terrific and totally in-tune trio of talents Sally Potter, Virginia Woolf and Tilda Swinton - Orlando is a bold, unsentimental and strikingly cinematic reworking of the 1928 novel long considered a classic in both feminist and gender studies. As the film’s eponymous, agelessly innocent aristocrat (Swinton) journeys through 400 years of English history, first as a man and later as a woman, Potter’s depiction of Orlando’s quest for love becomes a sumptuous dance through time. Its use of stunning visual opulence in arthouse period drama has since carried through to the work of filmmakers like Wes Anderson and Sofia Coppola, both of whom have succumbed to its influence.

Mad Max Dig out your leathers and studded shoulder pads (but leave the shotguns at home) for George Miller’s original Mad Max duo. Furious, frenetic, fender-bending action awaits in the desolate desert as we remind ourselves of the strong, silent qualities that made Mel Gibson a star of the ‘80s.

Mad Max Tue 30 Jun only George Miller • Australia 1979 • 1h33m • Digital 15 - Contains strong threat, violence, injury detail Cast: Mel Gibson, Joanne Samuel, Hugh Keays-Byrne

This creative, original, exciting, low-budget genre landmark gave the young Mel Gibson his first starring role. Set in the near future, Mad Max presents a postapocalyptic society descending into chaos, with the forces of law and order barely holding their own. Gibson plays Max, a good cop who’s fed up with his job. After chasing crazed criminals for years and seeing so many of his buddies killed in action, he just wants to retire and spend the rest of his days with his wife and child. Spending an idyllic break with his family on the beach, Max decides to put away his badge and uniform for good. But this is not to be... Though the plot is that of a simple revenge western, director George Miller infuses the film with a kinetic combination of visual style, amazing stunt work, creative costume design, and eccentric, detailed characterisations.

MAD MAX 2: THE ROAD WARRIOR

Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior Thu 2 Jul only George Miller • Australia 1981 • 1h35m • Digital 15 - Contains strong violence and a scene of sexual violence Cast: Mel Gibson, Bruce Spence, Michael Preston, Max Phipps, Vernon Wells.

Following the events of the first Mad Max film, Gibson’s cynical drifter is left roaming the desert wasteland. When he encounters a small (but petrol-rich) community of survivors, he finds himself defending them against the might of the masked, fuel-covetous Humungus and his gang of bikers. With ten times the budget of its predecessor, Mad Max 2 was at the time the most expensive film ever made in Australia. The characterisation and dialogue are intentionally minimal, but the stunts are simply jawdropping, even by today’s standards - as is its liberal use of leather, mascara and exotic hairstyles. The long-awaited new instalment in George Miller’s cacophonous canon, Mad Max: Fury Road, is screening at Filmhouse from Mon 29 Jun - see page 5.

Maidan/Come and See/Degree Show

MAIDAN

SPECIALEVENT

Maidan Thu 30 Jul only Sergei Loznitsa • Ukraine/Netherlands 2014 • 2h14m • Digital Ukrainian with English subtitles 12A - Contains infrequent strong language Documentary

Sergei Loznitsa’s film Maidan captures the trajectory of the Ukrainian civil uprising in 2013/2014 from peaceful rallies to bloody street battles. In a minimalist style and with long, still shots, the film depicts the point of view of the crowd, peeking into the organised chaos of a revolution. Loznitsa withholds any grand narrative and manages to give the viewer a sense of participating in history-making, particularly as the film progresses, and the mood tips from euphoric to besieged. Beyond Borders Scotland - an organisation dedicated to cultural dialogue - presents this special screening and will host an open post-film discussion with activists of the Euromaidan protests, offering first-hand insights into the time in the square, the movement itself and the current situation in Ukraine.

THE FRENCH CONNECTION

QMU DEGREE SHOW

Come and See

Degree Show

A monthly one-off screening of a great film we simply thought you mnight like to see, again or for the first time, on the big screen.

Queen Margaret University Degree Show

The French Connection Mon 27 Jul only William Friedkin • USA 1971 • 1h44m • Digital • English and French with English subtitles • 18 Cast: Gene Hackman, Fernando Rey, Roy Scheider, Tony Lo Bianco, Marcel Bozzuffi.

William Friedkin’s hugely influential thriller from 1971 is a fictionalised account of New York City’s largest drug bust. But at the same time it is about blurring the line between good guys and bad guys (now default in your typical crime movie), and the gritty, yet often boring pursuit of narcotics crime. Gene Hackman is the relentlessly obsessive Jimmy ‘Popeye’ Doyle, as certain of his hunches as he is unmindful of the line that separates cop from criminal. He bears down on international drug smuggler Charnier (Fernando Rey), resulting in one of cinema’s most dizzying chase sequences. The French Connection is unusual in that it is selfconsciously not a melodrama: there is no romantic subplot, no family life, no heroic actors or actions. It is spare, cold, and generally unpleasant. It is also masterful. Cédric Jimenez’s stylish, ‘70s-set The Connection (page 9) views the same international drug smuggling operation from the European side of the Atlantic, and screens at Filmhouse from Fri 10 to Sun 12 Jul.

Thu 9 Jul only 1h40m

QMU’s cream of the crop; 10 shorts made by our Film & Media students covering a diverse range of subjects and genres. The documentaries profile an award winning artist, take you on a musical journey to the streets of Morocco and show you how to build an Earthship. The dramas feature characters dealing with the effects of grief, poverty, illness... and junk mail. Perhaps immodestly, we think it’s one of our strongest ever screenings: we hope you’ll agree. http://www.qmu.ac.uk/mcpa/coursesFilmAndMedia. htm
