Introduction

FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS

MUSTANG

JOHNNY GUITAR

TARKOVSKY

A festival of film, before the Film Festival… Welcome to the early summer May/June bumper double issue of the Filmhouse programme. We go ‘double’ and cover two months at this time of year as our local International Film Festival takes up our screens for much of the second half of June, and so it seems like the perfect opportunity to, well, save a bit of cash if I’m honest. I hope the lovely front cover doesn’t fade too much what with all that time it will have to spend, pride of place, on your coffee table... Whilst I can’t tell you it’s twice as good as the usual programme (“How could anything be twice as good as last month’s incredible selection?!” I hear you cry), I can tell you there’s very near to twice as much in it, and, at Filmhouse, quantity is never at the expense of quality. Just when you thought you’d spent an eternity waiting for a film telling the story of a mid 20th century opera-obsessed heiress and socialite who loved singing but couldn’t sing a note – a fact that escaped no-one’s notice but hers – two of them come along at once! Let me explain. Back in March, we showed a French film, called Marguerite, which was (loosely) based on the life of one Florence Foster Jenkins, whose name lends itself to the title of the second film about her in almost as many months. Off-key she may have been, but not so Meryl Streep’s note-perfect performance. She’s a joy to watch, as is Hugh Grant, who plays her indulgentto-a-fault partner, a failed Shakespearean thesp called St. Clair Bayfield, and Big Bang Theory’s Howard Wolowitz, Simon Helberg, completes the main cast as FFJ’s reluctant accompanist, Cosmé McMoon. (Helberg’s real-life ivory-tinkling prowess – as witnessed by yours truly at an EIFF party some years back – cannot have hurt his chances of landing the role, that’s for sure!) And pushing the tuneful/tuneless juxtaposition further than perhaps I ought, Stephen Frears direction is pitchperfect too, turning what might have been an uncomfortable ‘laugh at’, into a genuinely warm and affecting tale. Mustang was one of the most talked about titles post-Cannes Film Festival last year, gathering a clutch of awards since - and it’s easy to see why. It tells the story of a group of five, lively, orphaned sisters – in various stages of pre-to-late adolescence – in a village in Turkey, as they struggle against the increasingly extreme strictures placed upon them by their über-conservative guardians – in particular their barbaric uncle. If that all sounds too bleak, well, it isn’t. Trust me. Love & Friendship is Whit Stillman’s hugely entertaining film of the little known and posthumously (some 50+ years) published Jane Austen novella, ‘Lady Susan’. It sees Kate Beckinsale in the [epistolary novella’s title] role of a recently widowed socialite/Machiavellian schemer on the prowl around London society for a husband for her daughter, and maybe for herself too, albeit decidedly on her own terms. Great fun! And pay attention, it rattles along at a fair old pace! We’re delighted to bring you, fully restored, what Martin Scorsese referred to as Nicholas Ray’s “intense, unconventional, stylized picture, full of ambiguities and subtexts”, western one-of-a-kind, Johnny Guitar. We’re also delighted to bring you, all in brand new digital ‘prints’, an entire feature film retrospective of the ultimate directors’ director, Andrei Tarkovsky – Andrei Rublev, Stalker, Solaris et al! Now if that isn’t the perfect ‘arthouse’ cinema ‘palate cleanser’ prior to the 70th – yes the 70th – edition of our proper all-grown-up International Film Festival (15-26 June) then I simply don’t know what is! Rod White, Head of Filmhouse

Winner of Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars®and the Grand Prix at Cannes, László Nemes’ brilliant debut feature is propelled by the same harrowing intensity as its central character - a Sonderkommando at AuschwitzBirkenau who is forced to assist in the grisly day-to-day management of the exterminations. When Saul recognises a boy who miraculously, but only fleetingly, survives the gas chamber, he decides to give him a proper burial. However, his search for a Rabbi to recite the mourner’s Kaddish places both his own life and the escape plan hatched by his fellow inmates in jeopardy.

Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant star in the cinematic retelling of the life of the eponymous New York heiress who obsessively pursued her dream of becoming a great opera singer. The voice Florence (Streep) heard in her head was divine, but to the rest of the world it was hilariously awful. At private recitals, her devoted husband and manager St Clair Bayfield (Grant) managed to protect Florence from the truth, but when she decides to give a concert at New York’s Carnegie Hall, St Clair realises he may have bitten off more than he can chew...

Matinee Special! If you’re a Senior Citizen you can go to a matinee screening and get either soup of the day OR a cup of tea or filter coffee and a traycake for only £8! Offer is subject to availability and only available in person.

In Terrence Malick’s seventh film, a gliding camera once again accompanies a tormented hero on his search for meaning. Channelling aspects of myths and stories from an array of cultures, this latest intriguing, expressive film sees a screenwriter (Christian Bale) embark on an odyssey through the playgrounds of Los Angeles and Las Vegas - searching for love and a better understanding of the events in his life. In eight thematically distinct chapters (named after Tarot cards), we are taken on a journey through his relationships with those in his life. Cinematography from three-time (consecutive) Academy Award® winner Emmanuel Lubezki ensures that this, once again, is a treat for the eyes as well as the mind.

Krzysztof Kieslowski • France/Switzerland/Poland 1994 • 1h39m Digital • French with English subtitles • 15 Cast: Irène Jacob, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Frédérique Feder, JeanPierre Lorit, Samuel Le Bihan, Marion Stalens.

A tale of parallel lives which, in Kieslowski’s uniquely poignant yet oblique fashion, draws together the threads and themes of the entire Three Colours trilogy. Swiss model Valentine (Irène Jacob) discovers that a nearby retired judge (Jean-Louis Trintignant) has been using his radio equipment to eavesdrop on his neighbours’ phone conversations. Confronting him, he urges Valentine to follow her conscience in deciding whether to denounce him or not. Meanwhile, law student Auguste (Jean-Pierre Lorit) is unaware that his girlfriend, Karin (Frédérique Feder), has been unfaithful to him. The paths of the judge, the student, his girlfriend and Valentine - all of whom live in the same street - begin to cross and re-cross in a web of coincidence. Superbly acted, photographed and scored, this most complex film of the trilogy echoes the distinctive grace notes which span Kieslowski’s entire career.

Deniz Gamze Ergüven • France/Germany/Turkey/Qatar 2015 1h37m • Digital • Turkish with English subtitles • 15 - Contains infrequent strong sex references Cast: Günes Sensoy, Doga Zeynep Doguslu, Tugba Sunguroglu, Elit Iscan.

Five young sisters in a remote village in Turkey walk home from school, stopping to play by the shore with some of their classmates - boys. The perceived immorality of this wholly innocent act will have harsh and excessive consequences, with the family home progressively transformed into a prison and school replaced by a ‘marriage preparation’ routine of cooking, cleaning and sewing lessons from their female relatives. Lale (Günes Sensoy), the youngest, is our protagonist in this rousing, thoughtful and poignant tale of growing, sisterhood and pursuing freedom, which won the Audience Award at Glasgow Film Festival 2016.

Growing Pains A Season of Films Programmed by Jessie Moroney Filmhouse’s monthly screening strand showing classic and contemporary films dealing with some of the more complex aspects of childhood. All films will be introduced by Jessie Moroney, a member of the programming team who recently attended the Practical Programming course run by the Independent Cinema Office, which assists participants in developing a fresh programme for their home venues How does a child assert their own identity in a world ultimately control by adults? For the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, we are screening Tomboy, along with the Edinburgh Premiere of Siri Rødnes’ short film, Take Your Partners. June’s screening is the tale of a young boy trying to strike the delicate balance between earning his mother’s approval and embracing his own identity - Pelo Malo.

The title of Celine Sciamma’s film gives much away. The ten-year-old person with short hair that we are introduced to in the opening shots of Tomboy is known as Laure to her family, a daughter who can dress as she wants, and have a blue-painted bedroom in their new home. However, unbeknownst to her parents, Laure presents to the neighbourhood children as a boy named Mikäel. In the background of childhood play and love, the film navigates the difficulties of questioning gender and sexuality at a young age. PLUS SHORT Take Your Partners

How does a child come to terms with who they are, while still trying to please those around them? At the centre of Mariana Rondón’s film is Junior, a nine-year-old boy who wants to get his curly hair straightened in order to look sleek and fabulous for his school photo. Why is his mother so against that? Exploring Junior’s desire to please his intolerant, often distant mother while also expressing his true self, Pelo Malo shows us how the awakening of a nonconformist identity can impact one’s life completely.

Sunday Bloody Sunday

Tue 24 May at 8.45pm

John Schlesinger • UK 1971 • 1h50m • Digital • English, Italian, Hebrew and French with English subtitles • 15 Cast: Peter Finch, Glenda Jackson, Murray Head, Peggy Ashcroft.

D A Pennebaker • USA 1967 • 1h36m • 35mm • 15 Documentary

Based on Penelope Gilliatt’s original screenplay, John Schlesinger’s film and the words “ahead of its time” are often spoken in the same breath. The London love triangle of a doctor in his forties, a divorced woman in her thirties and the young man they both love separately was certainly bold for its era, and remains a poignant drama now. Their arrangement enters its rueful final days when Bob (Murray Head) reveals his intention to leave for New York to sell his sculpture works. These last moments of intimacy between the two couplings reveal the complications of their circumstances and also within themselves. Céline Sciamma’s film Tomboy screens as part of Growing Pains on Tue 17 May - which marks the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (see page 7). Other films with strong LGBTQIA themes this month include Pelo Malo (page 7), Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures (page 11) and Peter Greenaway’s Eisenstein in Guanajuato (page 14).

In 1965, DA Pennebaker documented Bob Dylan’s British tour; the result is one of the most acclaimed music films of all time. Shot with a handheld camera in black-andwhite, the film follows Dylan from limo to hotel room as he relaxes with friends, antagonises the press and deals with managers. Introduced by Dr Pasquale Iannone (Short Courses, University of Edinburgh)

THE GOLD DIGGERS

SPECIALEVENT

The Gold Diggers Wed 25 May at 8.30pm Sally Potter • UK 1983 • 1h25m • 35mm • U Cast: Julie Christie, Colette Laffont, George Antoni.

The Gold Diggers is the first feature film from English film/ theatre director, screenwriter, actor and musician Sally Potter, with an all-female crew and score by avant-garde musician/composer Lindsay Cooper. Feminist, political but without a pedagogical goal, this experimental narrative film and its language have many affinities with the ‘avantgarde’ of prog rock. With a title alluding to Busby Berkeley musical comedies from the 1930s and the well-worn expression used to describe actresses and dancers pursuing relationships with wealthy men in the 19th/20th Century, the film is about two women (Julie Christie and Colette Laffont)trying to make their lives in a world made and directed by men. The screening will be introduced by composer/ sociologist François Ribac, senior lecturer at the University of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté (Dijon, France). It is part of The 2nd International Conference of the Project Network for the Study of Progressive Rock, organised by the University of Edinburgh.

A fascinating look at the realities of modern warfare, Gavin Hood’s tense thriller Eye in the Sky takes us through one very long and very stressful day in the lives of those tasked with making life or death decisions. The goal of Operation Cobra is the capture of a radicalised British citizen who has joined the Somali terrorist group Al Shabab. “Capture” becomes “kill” when they learn that Al Shabab is planning suicide attacks - but reports in London suggest that a young civilian girl has entered the kill zone...

Colours of the Alphabet tells the story of three Zambian children and their families over two school terms, and asks the question: does the future have to be in English? A lyrical, inspiring and beautifully-filmed documentary which spends 9 months in a Zambian village grade one class as the children, and their parents, come to terms with the often bemusing reality of education in their country. A country where there are 72 ethnic languages spoken, however, you are told that to get ahead means understanding the world in the country’s only official language - English. Despite less than 2% of Zambians using the language in their daily lives.

Simon Stone • Australia 2015 • 1h36m • Digital • 15 - Strong language, sex Cast: Paul Schneider, Geoffrey Rush, Anna Torv, Miranda Otto, Sam Neill, Odessa Young.

The 27 May screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Alastair Cole. Co-hosted with Africa in Motion Film Festival. On Wednesday 1 June, there will be a special screening co-hosted with the Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities, in collaboration with the University of the West of Scotland, Edinburgh Napier University, and the University of Edinburgh. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with the filmmakers and scholars, looking at the research project surrounding the film and lens-based research in academia.

In this smouldering, low-key adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s ‘The Wild Duck’, renowned theatre director Simon Stone makes his feature film debut. Christian (Paul Schneider) returns home to Australia to be best man for the wedding of his father (Geoffrey Rush), a wealthy mill owner in their struggling logging town. Reconnecting with his childhood friend Oliver (Ewen Leslie), Christian’s return begins to stir up long-suppressed memories, as a family secret begins to reveal itself...

Arabian Nights

ARABIAN NIGHTS VOLUME 1: THE RESTLESS ONE

Arabian Nights Thrillingly inventive, wildly ambitious, and as urgent as it is playful, Miguel Gomes’ three-part epic Arabian Nights (patterned on the structure of Scheherazade’s One Thousand and One Nights) is a fascinating and entertaining modern-day folk tale that channels the director’s outrage at his native Portugal’s enduring economic crisis and imposed austerity measures.

Volume 1: The Restless One, which focuses on the government’s flawed economy recovery plans and the plight of the working class, is a collection of tall tales that include appearances by cunning wasps, island-dwelling virgins, technocrats with erection-inducing potions, a talking cockerel who runs for municipal election, and exploding whales.

The second part of Gomes’ trio has the decidedly more heart-rending theme of desolation, nicely offset once again by more peculiar stories and characters. These include Simão the mass murderer on the run, a distressed judge presiding over a series of absurd cases, and Dixie the Maltese poodle, who is shuttled between dour owners living in a brutalist concrete nightmare. Housed within these wistful stories are some grim truths about economic paranoia and a society that has lost its impetus.

Our narrator Scheherazade (Crista Alfaiate) emerges in physical form in this third and final Volume - a lush costume spectacle which once again doesn’t hesitate to bring together incongruous settings and characters. With Marseille masquerading as Baghdad, the Grand Vizier meets his raconteur daughter, filled with new energy as she launches into her final tale. This last section draws the most from Gomes’ literary inspiration of the Arabian Nights and turns its gaze to storytelling and how stories shape our lives.

A layered examination of the often-controversial photographer Robert Mapplethorpe from the directorial duo behind Inside Deep Throat and Party Monster. Mapplethorpe tackles the late artist’s notoriety head-on, stopping to appreciate his body of work along the way, and doesn’t shy away from his insatiable ambition and personal relationships - two things that regularly intertwined throughout his life. While telling his story with an engaging blend of interviews and archive footage, the documentary presents his work, uncensored, and invites us to Look at the Pictures. Our Photography on Film season (pages 31-33) is curated in partnership with Stills Centre for Photography and the 31 May screening of Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures at 8.40pm will be introduced by Stills Director Ben Harman. On Tue 7 June, Stills will host a debate on the subject of Mapplethorpe’s photography - see page 31 for details.

As we approach a critical referendum on UK membership of the EU, Democracy takes us behind the scenes of the European Parliament as a little-noticed piece of legislation transforms into a crucial battleground. Jan Albrecht, a young and seemingly naïve Green MEP, takes charge of the Data Protection Bill; soon cornered by lobbyists with scant concern for citizen freedom, he proves a quietly tenacious opponent. Shot over two years, Democracy elevates its premise into a subtle, strange and powerful exploration of the legislative process. Followed in the cinema by short audience-led reflections on the challenges posed by the EU Referendum, with guests including Robin McAlpine (Common Weal).

The 3.30pm screening on Sunday 5 June will be a ‘Pay What You Like’ screening. Audience members are invited to donate whatever amount they wish to in exchange for their ticket. A promising pitcher, mild-mannered Jake (Blake Jenner) is welcomed (in a manner of speaking) to the baseball team at Texas Southern University as they embark on a firstweek-of-term crusade of parties, juvenile hijinks and the relentless pursuit of attention from women. While this college comedy is centred very specifically on the male experience and the energetic posturing of young college athletes, their charismatic bravado is a mask that slips... In the Bélier family, sixteen-year-old Paula is considered indispensable as the interpreter for her Deaf parents and brother. When her gift for singing is discovered, Paula is encouraged to participate in a prestigious singing contest in Paris - a decision that would mean leaving her family. Will you see it, as two different reviewers in the Guardian did, as “a feelgood movie to rival the Oscar®nominated Amélie” or as “yet another insult to the deaf community”? In a post-screening panel session with Deaf and hearing guests, we invite signers and non-signers alike to explore the issues raised by the film, including children’s responsibilities when their parents are considered disadvantaged, the casting of hearing actors as Deaf characters, and just what’s permissible in the pursuit of a good story.

A deadpan comedy that goes beyond the usual generation-gap formula. Our curmudgeonly protagonist (Antti Litja) is a man from the past. Virtually everything that’s occurred since 1953 has managed to ruin his day. Living a secluded life in rural Finland, things change when he has a fall, injuring his ankle. Forced to travel into the city for treatment, he is set on a collision course with an array of things he dislikes - namely taxis, modern appliances, women driving and spending time with his family. His career-driven daughter doesn’t have the time and his apathetic son doesn’t have the motivation - can The Grump find some common ground?

Whit Stillman • Ireland/Netherlands/France/USA 2016 • 1h32m Digital • U - Contains no material likely to offend or harm Cast: Kate Beckinsale, Chloë Sevigny, Xavier Samuel.

Kate Beckinsale inhabits the irresistibly devious lead role in this well-told adaptation of Jane Austen’s novella, ‘Lady Susan’. A much-admired widow, Lady Susan Vernon arrives at the lavish estate of her in-laws to wait out the rumours circulating about her in polite society. During her stay she resolves to find herself a new husband, and upon the unexpected arrival of her debutante daughter (Morfydd Clark), she finds herself rather threatened by the competition...

The Measure of a Man La loi du marché Fri 10 to Wed 15 Jun Stéphane Brizé • France 2015 • 1h33m • Digital • French with English subtitles • 15 Cast: Vincent Lindon, Karine de Mirbeck, Matthieu Schaller, Francoise Anselmi.

Vincent Lindon gives one of his finest performances as unemployed security guard Thierry, who must submit to a series of quietly humiliating ordeals in his search for work. Nothing if not determinist, Stéphane Brizé’s film dispassionately monitors the progress of its stoic protagonist until at last he lands a job on the front line in the surveillance and control of his fellow man - and finally faces one too many moral dilemmas. A powerful and deeply troubling vision of the realities of our new economic order.

Nicholas Ray • USA 1954 • 1h50m • Digital • PG Cast: Joan Crawford, Sterling Hayden, Mercedes McCambridge, Scott Brady.

Bursting from the screen in delightfully garish Trucolor tones, Johnny Guitar may be named after Sterling Hayden’s character but the real protagonist is quite clearly Joan Crawford’s fierce saloon-owner, Vienna. Nicholas Ray’s subversive 1954 Western returns to cinemas here in a new vivid digital restoration. When plans emerge for a new railroad through the area, restless and uneasy locals - led by the jealous Emma Small (Mercedes McCambridge) - resolve to disrupt this and get rid of Vienna once and for all. Refusing to yield and aided by Hayden’s title character, Vienna faces down the mob, who fear the change and new faces that a railroad would bring. Open to all manner of valid interpretations and readings and produced during the McCarthy era - it is a cinematic oddity in the best possible sense.

A thoroughly irreverent dramatisation of the ten days in October 1931 which director Sergei Eisenstein spent in Mexico with Jorge Palomino Cañedo during the making of the tragically unfinished ¡Que viva México! As with so much of Peter Greenaway’s best work, the film’s excitement comes from its sheer informational overload, in being bombarded by so many noteworthy figures and historical titbits that the film flies by in a dramatic deluge. And yet, this is also just marvellous window-dressing around a central, slowly-developing love story between Eisenstein and Palomino Cañedo: a forthright homosexual drama which has already stirred controversy in Russia with its ebullient queering of the country’s cinematic forefather.

The Giver

What kind of society would exist if persons with disabilities are ‘released’ (given death by lethal injection) and suffering no longer existed. Would it be a utopian or dystopian society? What are the ethical consequences of such a eugenic society? These are some of the questions which will be considered at the screening of the film ‘The Giver’ which is based on the best selling novel of the same name. The film will be shown as a fringe event of the 13th World Congress of the International Association of Bioethics in order to present the annual Edinburgh International Biomedical Ethics Film Festival.

In a colourless, egalitarian society, all citizens self-medicate to remain happy and follow the rules passed down by the Elders. They exist without memories of what happened before this, and only a chosen few have access to the history, thoughts, feelings and ideas that once shaped the world. Jonas (Brenton Thwaites), a teenager, is on the verge of graduating into adulthood, and is assigned to be the Receiver of the Memories - for which he will be trained by The Giver (Jeff Bridges). Suddenly exposed to emotions Jonas begins to question the society and the motives of the Chief Elder (Meryl Streep) who oversees it.

To mark the release of Terrence Malick’s Knight of Cups (see page 5), we’re screening his two 1970s classics. Badlands is his mesmerising, effortless debut that tells a dark true-crime story. When 25-year-old Kit (Martin Sheen), looking every inch the smalltown James Dean, walks into 15-year-old Holly’s (Sissy Spacek) life, their whirlwind romance quickly sees their lives completely unravel. Within days, Holly’s father (Warren Oates) is dead and they are on the run across South Dakota. The sole narrator in the telling, young Holly’s love for Kit distracts her from his violent nature and the futility of their meandering life. It’s a road movie that, while inspired by real events, would go on to influence many more, and in their aimless journey we realise just how naïve even the most callous of us can be. Malick began his next film with another opportunistic couple travelling through the American country, searching for a life. Days of Heaven is set in 1916, and begins with Bill (Richard Gere) and Abby (Brooke Adams), along with her younger sister (Linda Manz) fleeing Chicago to the Texas Panhandle, where they find work with a wealthy farmer (Sam Shepard). Posing as siblings, the pair conspire to inherit their employer’s money. Dream-like shots of sundrenched wheat fields will live long in the memory, as will the swarm of locusts and ensuing fire. Badlands

Richard Linklater’s return to the wild freedom of youth in Everybody Wants Some!! (see page 12) has drawn happy comparisons to his 1993 high school classic Dazed and Confused - a double bill was a no-brainer, so to speak. Drawing its own comparisons at the time to the likes of American Graffiti, Linklater’s loose and playful Dazed and Confused is set in a small U.S. town in the the 1970s. We dive headlong into the final day of high school - a world of drinking, smoking, hazing, lust and aimless driving. From the end of school to the final, sprawling end-of-year party in the woods, the film coasts easily from character to character, as everyone’s hopes, fears and questions about life after high school are laid bare. Skipping on a decade, Everybody Wants Some!! takes place in the outrageous week of freedom before classes begin at Texas Southern University. Jake (Blake Jenner) arrives as a new student, hoping to impress as a pitcher for the baseball team. Shenanigans ensue as his team-mates revel in these blissfully irresponsible days, with the impending start of term drawing closer all the while. Dazed and Confused

Further highlighting significant advances made by the television/on-demand industry in recent years in terms of production quality and scale, Suburra (based on the novel) is a stylish, hard-edged crime thriller co-produced by the Italian national public broadcaster Rai. When a notorious gangster known as “Samurai” (Claudio Amendola) wants to turn to the ancient Roman harbour into the new Las Vegas, it sets into motion a deadly game of deception, decadence and collusion between organised crime and politicians. Elevated by an atmospheric score from French electronic duo M83 and an impressive ensemble cast, the film builds steadily to an audacious, operatic finale.

Directed by and starring Don Cheadle, Miles Ahead presents fictionalised sketches of the great Miles Davis drawn from one of his darker periods, a self-imposed retirement in the late 1970s. It’s a remarkable portrait of Davis as an artist seemingly in decline, wracked with pain from a variety of ailments and sweating for the next cheque from his record company, dodging sycophants and industry executives, and haunted by memories of old glories and humiliations. The nonlinear structure eschews the usual biopic formula in favour of a more freeform story that neatly matches the sprawl of Davis’ music, burrowing deep into the psyche of one of the most important artists of the 20th century.

A lyrical and playful film about remembering, forgetting, losing and loving, Laurie Anderson’s Heart of a Dog is a pleasantly ambling experience shaped by the director’s notions, memories and feelings. Largely shot by the filmmaker herself, Anderson’s personal film reflects on an array of topics, ideas and those now missing from her life. These include her friend Gordon Matta-Clark, her husband Lou Reed and her beloved terrier Lolabelle. Accompanied by Anderson’s wry voiceover, we are invited to share in her stories, her regrets and her loves - for family, for friends and for four-legged companions.

Learning to Drive Mon 27 to Thu 30 Jun Isabel Coixet • USA/UK 2014 • 1h30m • Digital • cert tbc Cast: Patricia Clarkson, Ben Kingsley, Jake Weber, Sarita Choudhury, Grace Gummer.

Shocked to learn that her husband is leaving after 21 years of marriage, literary critic Wendy (Patricia Clarkson) decides she needs to learn to drive. Enter driving instructor Darwan (Ben Kingsley), and soon the two strike up a friendship that transcends cultural differences. Deftly bypassing obvious clichés, Isabel Coixet’s film is a charming, funny study of middle-aged angst with a terrific performance from Clarkson in particular. Learning to Drive was an official selection at Edinburgh International Film Festival 2015.

A rare opportunity to see one of the most remarkable documentaries in film history, currently unavailable to watch for UK audiences. Using collaborative working methods and in conversation with Songhoy communities, celebrated documentary maker Jean Rouch documents the journey of traditional gow lion hunters in Niger to confront ‘the American’: a ferocious lion that has been killing their livestock. Opening with the words of a traditional griot, Rouch fuses aspects of oral culture with magical realist documentary, evoking a dizzying sense of participatory experience. Introduced by a traditional Scottish storyteller.

Described by Pauline Kael as one of the world’s few truly animist films, Padre Padrone is a classic of Italian cinema and features some of the most vivid imagery ever committed to screen. A magical realist account of the life of a young Sardinian shepherd, the film tells the story of Gavino, an intense young man in the shadow of his overbearing father who is taken out of school to look after his family’s flock of goats in the Sardinian mountains. Introduced by a traditional Scottish storyteller.

But when Ben discovers Saoirse is actually a selkie, and that her life is in danger from Macha the Owl Witch, he finds himself in a race against time: can he set aside his broken heart to bring their family together once again? Weaving together Irish folk myth with the poignant realities of everyday life, Song of the Sea is a rhapsodic, magical-realist celebration of folk tale, imagery, and the importance of passing on tradition. Introduced by a traditional Scottish storyteller.

Mirt Sost Shi Amit

A striking work of Ethiopian cinema fusing traditional oral culture with cinematic poetry and a classic of the socialist, anti-imperialist Third Cinema movement. Reminiscent of John McGrath’s celebrated The Cheviot, The Stag and the Black, Black Oil, and highly pertinent to Scotland’s long history of land reform, Gerima’s film tells the story of a family of peasants rising up against their oppressive landlord, situated against the day-to-day rhythms of work and communal storytelling. This screening is supported by Africa in Motion Film Festival

Highschooler Johnny and his 11 year old sister Jashaun face difficult questions after the death of their errant father. Looking to the future, what sort of life can Johnny and Jashuan expect on the Res? Is it better to cut and run, or stand and fight? Shot entirely on location, and featuring a remarkable cast of non-actors, Zhao’s debut is a moving testament to community dignity and the ties that bind. IberoDocs Scotland’s Ibero-American Documentary Film Festival IberoDocs – Scotland’s Ibero-American Documentary Film Festival - is back to celebrate its 3rd edition. In 2014 we were a newborn festival exploring the idea of migration and trying to figure out how to fit in. In our second edition we compared ourselves with a toddler, exploring film through the lens of identity, and by the end we were running with joy and confidence. Well, this year we're rebelling. We're crossing the line - pushing boundaries and exploring borders, as filmmakers from all the Ibero-American space do. These filmmakers are risk-takers in format and in content, and this year we celebrate them in our “Focus on First Works” strand, which is dedicated to those emerging and up-and-coming filmmakers that have had the courage to do the unexpected and were able to make true stand-out films as a result. Also new for this year is our first Short Docs programme, including filmmakers from across Ibero-America in what will be the festival’s most experimental section. In addition we will have our dedicated Lusophone strand, featuring documentaries from Portugal and Brazil and, of course, IberoDocs Film Festival will once again have special events, opening and closing receptions, and parties. We hope to see you at Filmhouse in May! The IberoDocs Team x iberodocs.org

An intimate insight into the Patronas, a group of Mexican women who, every day since 1995, make food and toss it - still warm - to the migrants who travel atop the freight train ‘The Beast’ as it makes it way to the U.S. This documentary is a personal diary that draws a border between the life they were given, and the life they chose. A brave and remarkable example of love and solidarity that contrasts with the violence of one of the cruelest stretches in the world for undocumented travellers. Sergio and his father, Simão, haven’t seen each other for over 20 years. On the eve of the 2014 World Cup, Sergio returns to his hometown, São Paulo, hoping to watch the games with Simão, as they used to when he was a kid. It seems to be a perfect plan for a father-son reunion: a whole month together, their schedule based on the World Cup calendar. But as the days go by, their relationship starts to wander into unknown territory and their pact to watch the entire tournament together turns into a dangerous ritual...

Looking from Afar is a programme of six short films in which the perception of the self and its surroundings country, culture, landscape - seem to expand or sharpen when seen from a distance through space, time, matter or the intangible. From a young Brazilian man, in his new Lisbon home, facing the end of his Fortaleza adolescence, in The Party and the Barking, through the savagery of voice and memory set against a teenage face, in Le Boudin, to the lonely cart rolling along the obsolete Colombian railways, across the wild and the ruins, in Echo Chamber, we will take you far and wide.

This is the story of a man who created a jungle next to the highway, building with his bare hands beautiful and unbelievable works of engineering in the forest. This is also the story of how he ended up burning them to ashes to reconstruct them, time after time, over decades. He is known as ‘Garrell’, also as “Tarzan from Argelaguer”, and he is not driven by any apparent purpose, except one: going “on the go”. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Conxi Fornieles, director of Travelling Light.

Pepe Mujica has become famous for being the ‘world’s poorest president’. The former guerrilla fighter and flower grower is currently considered one of the most charismatic politicians of Latin America. Old and young believe in him thanks to his humble lifestyle and his unconventional manners, where political protocol is concerned. His political visions, among them his sensational regulation of the marihuana market, have created international interest.

MR. BLANDINGS BUILDS HIS DREAM HOUSE

Light and Shadow:

Architecture on Screen Architecture and design plays an important part in our everyday lives, both consciously and subconsciously shaping the towns and cities we live in physically and visually and the everyday objects we use. Films have often used architecture as an integral character, setting the atmosphere and forming an essential backdrop to plot. As Part of the 2016 Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design, the Edinburgh Architectural Association in conjunction with Filmhouse have brought together a series of feature films and accompanying Scottish shorts that explore the role of architecture and design within film and beyond.

The year is 2019, and LA is playing unwitting host to a group of escaped synthetic humans called replicants. Bred for slavery on off-world colonies and outlawed on earth, these illegal immigrants are hunted by Blade Runners, and Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) has the task of ‘retiring’ them. What follows is a visually stunning and thematically dense future noir that delves deep into what it means to be human. Introduced by Dr Jonny Murray, Lecturer in Film and Visual Culture, Edinburgh College of Art and Ben Rainger, Edinburgh Architectural Association.

Renowned artist Edward Burtynsky travels through China photographing the evidence and effects of its massive industrial revolution and the implicit impact on the environment. Jennifer Baichwal captures the artist at work amid some of the most surreal landscapes of the 21st century, such as the mountains of ‘ewaste’ in China where 50% of the world’s computers are recycled. The third (and final) pairing of Cary Grant and Myrna Loy, Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House is an entertaining screwball comedy set during the post-war rush to suburbia. Keen to escape the confines of their apartment in busy New York, advertising executive Jim Blandings (Grant) and his wife Muriel (Loy) set to work on fixing up an old house in rural Connecticut, which turns out to be rather more dilapidated than first thought...

An fascinating and engaging journey through graphic design and visual culture, with the Helvetica typeface as its starting point of exploration. Created in 1957 as an attempt at a ‘perfect’ sans-serif font, it is a useful starting point in the examination of a range of issues - including the technological revolution, the origin and implication of typefaces and their application in contemporary modes of information. Presented and discussed by an impressive selection of experts and a dash of filmmaking flair.

The visual style of Peter Greenaway is utterly at home in the Italian capital in this vivid 1987 film, in which the frame is often completely consumed by the looming architecture of Rome. American architect Stourley Kracklite (Brian Dennehy) is commissioned to put together an exhibition based on the architecture of Etienne-Louis Boullée - a project that receives a rather mixed response from his Italian colleagues. His obsession growing, Kracklite devotes himself completely to the exhibition, as his health and marriage to Louisa (Chloe Webb) begin to erode...

In the titular futuristic city of Fritz Lang’s reconstructed and restored silent classic, a ruling class live in opulence, while a literal underclass toil in a vast subterranean workshop. Lured from his Edenic existence by the saintly Maria (Brigitte Helm), Freder Fredersen (Gustav Fröhlich) witnesses this misery and vows to persuade his despotic father, Joh (Alfred Abel), to change the system. But Joh has no qualms about the status quo, and works with a loony scientist to create a robotic ‘Evil Maria’, who they hope will turn the workers from revolutionary thoughts.

The husband-and-wife team of Charles and Ray Eames are widely regarded as America’s most important designers. Perhaps best remembered for their mid-century plywood and fibreglass furniture, they also created a mind-bending variety of other products, from splints for wounded military to photography, interiors, multimedia, films and toys. But their personal lives and influence on American life - from the development of modernism, to the rise of the computer age - has been less widely understood. In the 1960s, Fidel Castro commissioned three young architects to design and build Cuba’s National Art Schools, with the great excitement of the country’s artists mixing in with the revolutionary fervour of the time. When the realities of their new nation become apparent, however, production is halted and the buildings are left tragically unfinished. Forty years later, with the Schools still functioning in this state and decay setting in, the architects are invited back to finish what they started. This documentary tells the stories of devoted designers and the struggle to create and build in times of great upheaval. Photography on Film Stills is pleased to have the opportunity to collaborate with Filmhouse on this season of films. Above all, the programme demonstrates the exciting power and reach of photography. It offers insight into the fascinating people and stories from the medium’s recent history and how filmmakers have depicted them. It illustrates how the camera can empower those who use it and how the photographic image remains compelling, provocative and sometimes controversial. From 24 April – 25 May, to coincide with Stills’ forthcoming 40th year as Edinburgh’s only gallery dedicated to photography, we will present a display within the Filmhouse café that draws upon our archive of past exhibitions. On the evening of the 7th June Stills will host: ‘Beauty/Obscenity?’ A debate on the photographs of Robert Mapplethorpe with contributions from Edinburgh-based photographer David Grinly and myself, timed to follow the screenings of Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures at Filmhouse (see page 11). To many, Don McCullin is the greatest living war photographer, often cited as an inspiration for today’s photojournalists. From 1969 to 1984 he was the star photographer at the Sunday Times, where he covered stories from the civil war in Cyprus to the war in Vietnam, from the man-made famine in Biafra to the plight of the homeless in the London of the swinging sixties. For the first time, McCullin speaks candidly about his three-decade career covering wars and humanitarian disasters on virtually every continent, and the photographs that often defined historic moments. Married at a young age to the boorish Sigfrid in the southern Swedish city of Malmo in the early 1900s, Maria faces a bleak future. Happening upon a camera she won in a lottery but never used, Maria tries to pawn it, but instead is shown how to use it by solicitous storeowner Sebastian Pedersen. Slowly, and with no consciousness of ‘art’, Maria discovers her natural bent for taking insightful, haunting pictures, helped along by lessons in the darkroom from Sebastian, who, due to reticence and perhaps their notable age difference, refrains from acting on his growing feelings for his protegee. A beautifully evocative period drama from Swedish veteran Jan Troell.

The most stigmatised people in Calcutta’s red light district are not the prostitutes but their children. In the face of abject poverty, abuse and despair, children have little hope of escaping their mothers’ fate to create another kind of life. Drawn into their world, filmmaker Zana Briski finds herself teaching the children how to take photographs. Her lessons unleash vital insights into their souls. But where will they go from here? Winner of Best Feature Documentary at the 77th Academy Awards®

Blow-Up Sat 28 May at 6.15pm Michelangelo Antonioni • UK/Italy/USA 1966 • 1h51m • 35mm 15 - Contains moderate nudity and drug use Cast: David Hemmings, Vanessa Redgrave, Sarah Miles, Jane Birkin, Peter Bowles.

Thomas (David Hemmings), a nihilistic London fashion photographer based in part on David Bailey (who is said to have been approached to play the role himself ), lives a life of excess in newly-Swinging London. Becoming bored with his lucrative career, he one day takes candid photos of a rendezvous between a woman (Vanessa Redgrave) and a middle-aged man. She pursues him to ask for the illicit photos, and he imagines that he has witnessed a scene of sexual intrigue - never thinking that he may have accidentally obtained visual evidence of a murder... Introduced by Anne Lyden, International Photography Curator, National Galleries of Scotland.

An absorbing documentary that deftly interweaves two fascinating narratives. One is that of the discovery of the photographic work of Vivian Maier and the process by which she achieved her recent, posthumous glory as one of the greatest American street photographers. The other narrative is that of Maier’s life itself, which, because of her secretiveness, the scarcity of official records, and the absence of relatives or close friends to testify, becomes a mystery story, with filmmaker John Maloof as detective. Maloof became Maier’s archivist after his purchase of a box of photographic negatives at a public auction led him to discover her work. His obsession with finding out the details of her life drives the filmmaker to seek out her neighbours and the people for whom she worked as a nanny, and to travel from Chicago, where she lived, to a village in France that she photographed on at least two separate visits. Finding Vivian Maier probes the life of a deeply private person and tries to fill the gaps in the world’s knowledge of her with the indications she left, in her photographs, of how she experienced the world. Introduced by Ben Harman, Director of Stills: Centre for Photography, Edinburgh.

A full feature film retrospective of Andrei Tarkovsky.

Andrei Tarkovsky • USSR 1962 • 1h35m • Digital • Russian and German with English subtitles • PG Cast: Kolya Burlyaev, Irina Tarkovskaya, Valentine Zubkov, Yevgeny Zharikov.

Andrei Tarkovsky • USSR 1974 • 1h46m • Digital • Russian with English subtitles • U Cast: Margarita Terekhova, Oleg Yankovsky, Filipp Yankovsky, Ignat Daniltsev, Nikolai Grinko.

Tarkovsky’s first feature is in many ways an orthodox Russian film of its period. Ivan (Kolya Burlyaev) is a teenage Soviet spy on the German front in World War II who undertakes dangerous missions behind enemy lines, until the inevitable mission from which there is no return. Many of Tarkovsky’s later images and themes are already present and correct: Ivan silently wading through still water, eerily immanent forestscapes, the poetry of forbidden zones, and life-and-death struggles played out in slow motion. 23 May screening will be introduced by Dr Pasquale Iannone (Short Courses, University of Edinburgh)

Tarkovsky’s non-narrative, stream of consciousness autobiographical film-poem blends scenes of childhood memory with newsreel footage and contemporary scenes examining the narrator’s relationships with his mother, his ex-wife and his son. The intensity of the childhood scenes in particular is so hypnotic that questions of the film’s alleged impenetrability dissolve under the impact of moment after moment of the most visually stunning, rhythmically captivating filmmaking imaginable. 8 June screening will be introduced by Dr David Sorfa (Senior Lecturer in Film Studies, University of Edinburgh)

Filmed under the watchful eye of Russia’s communist regime,Tarkovsky’s adaptation of Stanislaw Lem’s 1961 novel is a remarkable feat of cinema. When contact is lost with a space station orbiting an ocean-covered planet on the edge of the galaxy, the authorities send cosmonaut psychologist Kris Kelvin to investigate. Lushly beautiful and haunting, Nostalgia is also a challenging, thought-provoking meditation on man’s search for self. We follow a musicologist, Gortchakov (Oleg Yankovskiy), during a research trip to Italy where the composer he’s studying lived for several years. Gortchakov is apparently oblivious to his beautiful translator and the wonders of Italy, instead dwelling on memories of Russia. Things start to change when he encounters Domenico, a somewhat unstable man who has kept his family locked up for seven years while waiting the end of the world. Domenico has now decided that rather than wait he should do something about the end; and he’s decided Gortchakov should help. 26 May screening will be introduced by Dr Pasquale Iannone (Short Courses, University of Edinburgh).

An epic and frequently puzzling inquiry into freedom and faith, which unfolds in an unspecified totalitarian society. A shaven-headed guide known as Stalker agrees to escort a writer and a scientist to a forbidden wasteland area known as the Zone, where, in a miraculous ‘Room’, all one’s wishes can be granted. But as the man of words asks, “How do I know I want what I want?” Tarkovsky majestically creates, through editing rather than special effects, the unstable universe of the Zone, and, amidst the grime and the destruction, summons up moments of pure magic. 28 May screening will be introduced by Dr Alexandra Smith (Reader in Russian, University of Edinburgh)

Tarkovsky’s masterpiece first screened at the Cannes film festival in 1969, then somewhat disappeared until it was shown here four years later at the 27th Festival. Hailed at the time as “one of the greatest films ever made”, it deals with the life of Andrei Rublev, a Russian icon-painter of the early 1400s. “I do not understand historical films which have no relevance for the present. For me the most important thing is to use historical material to express Man’s ideas and to create contemporary characters.” (Andrei Tarkovsky) 29 May screening will be introduced by Dr Alexandra Smith (Reader in Russian, University of Edinburgh)

The Edinburgh Asian Film Festival

Ana Nojoom bent alasherah wamotalagah Fri 3 Jun at 8.30pm

I am delighted to introduce the 1st Edinburgh Asian Film Festival (EAFF 2016). This pioneering event adds an Asian flavour to vibrant Edinburgh and the iconic Filmhouse. EAFF has grown out of the BFI-supported London Asian Film Festival (LAFF); Europe’s longest-running Asian cinema showcase produced by non-profit organisation Tongues on Fire. EAFF 2016 offers viewers a bounty of border-breaking and boundary-pushing cinema, featuring Yemen’s first female filmmaker and spotlighting the burgeoning Pakistani and Indian Indie film sectors. EAFF‘s exhilarating cocktail of compelling, uplifting and thoughtprovoking stories guarantees cross-cultural appeal. I encourage everyone to seize this opportunity to experience a diverse kaleidoscope of Asian films, previously inaccessible to Edinburgh audiences.

With its first-time female director, I Am Nojoom does for Yemeni cinema what Wadjda did for Saudi Arabia. Khadija Al-Salami’s award-winning film explores the clash between tribal customs and modern-day attitudes in contemporary Yemen. This is the true story of Nojoom, a young girl growing up in a small village. Everything changes when her father marries her off to settle family debts. Unprepared to live in an abusive relationship, 10-year old Nojoom runs away. The ensuing courtroom battle sends shockwaves into the community and beyond.

This powerfully path-breaking documentary investigates Pakistan’s radical Red Mosque faith school network, where young children are trained to devote their lives to jihad, or holy war. The film features up-close-and-personal conversations with the school’s controversial custodian; the ISIS and Taliban-supporting cleric Maulana Abdul Aziz. With astounding access and chilling footage, the film’s Indian and Pakistani directors offer a timely and relevant insight into the causes that have led to the growth of radical Islam in Pakistan and around the world.

Set in the remote Pakistani province of Balochistan, the film’s stunning backdrops are reminiscent of the wide cinematic vistas in Lawrence of Arabia. “Wherever we placed the camera, the framing would be beautiful” says Jami, who both wrote and directed the film. Moor tackles the themes of honour, family ties and greed - taking as a starting point the rapidly declining railway system and the postcolonial corruption at its root. Tracing a family’s journey from tribal frontiers to cosmopolitan Karachi, Moor is a must-see masterpiece of modern independent Pakistani cinema.

Caught in a sting operation, Dr. Siras, an ageing professor, is suspended from Aligarh Muslim University for having sex with another man. A young rookie journalist, Deepu, decides to investigate the murky story and an unlikely friendship develops between the two. With Deepu’s support, Dr Siras fights a court case against invasion of privacy and the violation of his fundamental rights. Based on true incidents, Aligarh gently explores the inner world of a man who seeks freedom from an intolerant society.

Manto Sun 5 Jun at 5.45pm Sarmad Sultan Khoosat • Pakistan 2015 • 2h7m • Digital Urdu with English subtitles • 15 Cast: Sarmad Sultan Khoosat, Sania Saeed, Shamoon Abbasi, Nadia Afghan.

Director Sarmad Sultan Khoosat takes the title role in this biopic tracing the last four and half years of Manto’s life. Born in India, the controversial short-story writer moved to Pakistan following the Partition, and the film opens in a Lahore asylum where he is being treated for alcohol addiction. Manto’s pen continues to flourish, however, allowing him to leave a literary legacy that remains iconoclastic and radically relevant to this day. Introduced by Dr. Ashvin Devasundaram, Creative Director of EAFF 2016.
