AMERICAN HONEY A FILM WRITTEN AND DIRECTED By ANDREA ARNOLD S IN S ID E 1 0 0 F IL M R E V O S P LU

Earplugs will be provided. Well, it’s October again, and the leaves are well on their way off the trees (I’m using ‘poetic’ licence there as it’s only the 21st September today and the leaves are still very much attached), which means one thing: we’ll soon have to contend with that insufferably loud leaf blower who clears the car park adjacent to our offices. It is quite amusing when he does it in windy conditions, given he takes twice as long as usual. We’re always left thinking, there has to be a better way… Come October, we invariably enter a really busy period at Filmhouse, replete, as it usually is, with a whole host of festivals and seasons. First up is the Edinburgh Spanish Film Festival, going from strength to strength in its 3rd incarnation; Play Poland kicks off and showcases the best in recent Polish Cinema; Scotland Loves Anime (which has sold out every screening for a few years now, so be warned!) is next up; and the month concludes with Africa in Motion, showing the very best cinema from across the continent. Speaking of ‘loud’, we’ve arranged to screen Mark Cousins’ ace Nuclear Age doc, Atomic – which some of you may have been lucky enough to catch at EIF this year, accompanied by a thunderous rendering of its score, live, by Glasgow band Mogwai – in a recorded version, at the volume recommended by its creators. Great film. Great score. Played Loud. Earplugs will be provided where requested; you know, like they do at gigs! ‘First-run cinema’-wise, Andrea Arnold’s Cannes Jury Prize-winner American Honey gets its release, as does Raymond Briggs’ beautiful and poignant Ethel & Ernest, which tells the story of the lives of his parents through, among other things, The Blitz. We’re also taking the chance to catch up on David McKenzie’s marvellous Hell or High Water; and much, much more…! Rod White, Head of Filmhouse

Olivier Ducastel, Jacques Martineau • France 2016 • 1h37m • Digital French with English subtitles • 18 - Contains strong real sex. • Cast: Geoffrey Couët , François Nambot, Bastien Gabriel, Arthur Dumas.

Roger Mainwood • UK 2016 • 1h34m • Digital • cert tbc • With the voices of Jim Broadbent, Pam Ferris, Brenda Blethyn, Luke Treadaway.

In this beautifully shot nocturnal film - an awardwinner at Berlin (as Paris 05:59) - Theo and Hugo meet each other in a sex club. Having slept together, they exit into glow of pre-dawn Paris and wander the near-empty streets together, encountering a variety of characters - from food vendors, to metro passengers, to hospital staff - as the pair talk, eat and fall for one another. As ever, the course never runs smooth, but there’s a sincerity to both men that holds them together as they wander through the night.

This is an enchantingly animated film adaptation of a heart-warming true story of two people (with voices provided by Pam Ferris and Jim Broadbent) who fall in love against the background of immense social change in the mid 20th Century - the Depression, the Second World War, post-war prosperity and cultural upheaval. One love, forty years, and always a cup of tea.

Behemoth Bei xi mo shou Wed 2 Nov & Thu 3 Nov

Pablo Trapero • Argentina/Spain 2015 • 1h50m • Digital • Spanish with English subtitles • 15 • Cast: Guillermo Francella, Lili Popovich.

Zhao Liang • China/France 2015 • 1h35m • Digital • Chinese with English subtitles • cert tbc • Documentary.

Pablo Trapero’s tense thriller - the 2015 Silver Lion winner at Venice Film Festival - is based on the case of a Buenos Aires family that kidnapped people for ransom in the 1980s. We are placed in the strange, middle-class world of the Puccios in post-Falklands War Argentina, with the eldest son Alejandro (Peter Lanzani) initially turning to abducting wealthy persons for ransom after he becomes unemployed. As other family members become involved, their nefarious work earns them money, influence and political connections, but are family ties enough to withstand the pressure?

A staggering portrait of modern China, embedded deep in the aggressive industrialisation that ravages huge regions through open-pit coal mining and steel production, Behemoth is a masterful fly-onthe-wall film of haunting, grotesque vision. Shot guerilla-style without permission, with references to the Old Testament and Dante’s Divine Comedy, Zhao Liang’s film takes us from panoramic views of scarred terrain, to the very human scars wreaked upon the workforce, to the uninhabited ‘ghost towns’ created by the unchecked surge of industry.

THE FIRST WORLD WAR IN CINEMA

La grande illusion Mon 24 Oct at 8.30pm Jean Renoir • France 1937 • 1h54m • Digital • French, German and English with English subtitles • U - Contains mild violence and language • Cast: Jean Gabin, Pierre Fresnay, Erich von Stroheim.

One of the great anti-war statements, this humanist masterpiece draws on the director’s own experiences as a pilot. Rich with humour, poignance and humanity, it stars Jean Gabin and Pierre Fresnay as two French POWs whose repeated escape attempts lead to their transfer to Wintersborn fortress... This screening is timed to mark the 100th anniversary of the recapture by the French Army of the strategically key Fort Douaumont, which had been taken, devastatingly for the French, by a small German raiding party only a matter of days into the Battle of Verdun. French PoWs can be seen celebrating the recapture in the film.

GROWING PAINS

Innocence Thu 27 Oct at 5.50pm Lucile Hadzihalilovic • Belgium/France/Britain 2004 • 2h1m • 35mm French with English subtitles • 15 Growing Pains shows films dealing with some of the more complex aspects of childhood. All films followed by an informal chat and will be introduced by Jessie Moroney, a member of the programming team who attended the Practical Programming course with the Independent Cinema Office, which assists participants to develop a fresh programme for their venues.

This haunting story follows the year in the life of three girls and their passage through their youth as they attend a secluded boarding school. Rarely coming into contact with the adult world, the dynamic of how these children relate to adults, failing to understand their behaviours while also seeing them as role models, forms the undercurrent to the girls’ discoveries as the year passes them by.

Pedro Almodóvar • Spain 2004 • 1h45m • Digital • Spanish with English subtitles • 15 - Contains strong language, sex references and hard drug use • Cast: Gael García Bernal, Fele Martínez

From director David Mackenzie (Hallam Foe, Starred Up) comes this gripping and thoroughly entertaining contemporary western. Scripted by Taylor Sheridan (Sicario) and with music from Nick Cave and Warren Ellis (The Assassination of Jesse James...), this tale of two brothers planning a heist to save their Texas farm from foreclosure - a hit at Cannes this year - is at the very least equal to the sum of its excellent parts.

La mala educación

A Hitchcockian thriller which enhanced Almodóvar’s reputation as one of the world’s most consistent and interesting directors. Two men, one of whom is a film director, meet up in the 1980s, twenty years after they attended a Catholic school together during Franco’s rule. A semi-autobiographical account of two teenage boys, falling in love and contending with sexual and emotional abuse. Visually sumptuous, with an intricate plot and excellent performances all round. There’s more Almodóvar to be found in our Sunday Double Bills this month - see pages 9-10

Mon 31 Oct at 6.30pm

Stanley Kubrick • UK/USA 1980 • 2h24m • Digital • 15 - Contains strong violence and language • Cast: Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, Scatman Crothers, Barry Nelson.

Jules Bass • USA 1967 • 1h35m • Digital • U With the voices of Boris Karloff, Allen Swift, Phyllis Diller.

Hired as caretaker of an isolated and deserted mountain hotel, struggling author Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) is haunted by his frustrated creative ambitions and fears of failure. Nurtured by the claustrophobia and isolation of his surroundings, his underlying insanity gradually evolves into rampant madness as he attempts to murder with an axe the only other occupants of the hotel - his wife and son (Shelley Duvall and Danny Lloyd). Truly hypnotic, disturbing, and ultimately entertaining.

Celebrating Halloween with a rarely screened stop-motion cult classic, EIFF plans to lure you to the island of Baron Frankenstein (voiced by Boris Karloff ), where preparations are underway for a very hip party indeed. The groovy skeleton band is tuning up, and invitations have been sent to all members of The Worldwide Organisation of Monsters. Be there or be a scared square!

Blazing Saddles is both an irreverent, gag-strewn parody of classic westerns and a provocative assault on racism. Along the way we’re treated to musical theatre, fourth-wall-breaking, foul-mouthed seniors and Wilder as quick-draw sharpshooter The Waco Kid. ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER + TALK TO HER Sun 23 Oct at 1.30pm 3h49m • 15 • £12/£10 • 15 minute break between films

Two very different stories that share common depths of character and emotion that cut through their melodramatic veneer. All About My Mother won the Best Director award at Cannes, and sees Cecilia Roth play a single mother to a young aspiring writer. When he is tragically killed in an accident, she moves to Barcelona in search of his father - encountering a variety of other women in the midst of their own personal crises. 3h57m • 18 • £12/£10 • 15 minute break between films

Our second Almodóvar Double Bill pairs two of the Spaniard’s more darkly comedic pieces. The brooding Tie Me Up! To follow, Penélope Cruz shines in the wonderfully vivacious Volver. A characteristically clever, intricate tale, brilliantly told, of death, superstition, secrets and lies amongst women of three generations of one family. Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! (¡Åtame!)

Rebel with a Camera: The Cinema of Ousmane Sembene Ousmane Sembène, otherwise known as the father of African cinema, is one of the key figures of world cinema, and yet his works, still relevant today, remain unknown to many. Following the screening of the new and highly acclaimed documentary Sembene!, we’re screening three of Sembène's films explored in the documentary: Xala, Moolaadé and Black Girl, each of which was in itself a key and groundbreaking work of world cinema. The programme is coordinated by Aya Distribution with the support of the BFI, awarding funds from The National Lottery.

Black Girl

La noire de...

Sat 8 Oct at 6.30pm Ousmane Sembene • Senegal/France 1966 • 1h • Digital • French with English subtitles • 12A • Cast: Mbissine Thérèse Diop, AnneMarie Jelinek, Robert Fontaine, Momar Nar Sene.

The film tells the tragic story of Diouana, a young Senegalese woman who finds work as a childminder for a French couple in Dakar. When the couple return to the south of France, she goes with them, dreaming of a life of luxury and fine clothes on the Côte d’Azur. However, things don’t turn out as she planned...

Xala The Curse Sun 9 Oct at 5.45pm Ousmane Sembene • Senegal 1974 • 2h3m • 35mm • French and Wolof with English subtitles • 12A • Cast: Thierno Leye, Seune Samb, Myriam Niang, Douta Seck, Makhouredia Gueye.

A businessman is struck with impotence and his attempts at a cure prove disastrous. In this fierce satire, Ousmane Sembène lashes the bourgeoisie of an unnamed, newly independent, African state (but clearly Senegal) for their slavish imitation of their past colonial masters, down to their corruption and conspicuous consumption.

MoolaadÉ Sun 16 Oct 5.45pm Ousmane Sembene • Senegal/France/Burkina Faso/Cameroon/ Morocco/Tunisia 2004 • 2h5m • 35mm • Bambara and French with English subtitles • 15 - Contains strong language, sex and female circumcision theme • Cast: Fatoumata Coulibaly, Maimouna Hélène Diarra, Salimata Traoré, Dominique Zeïda.

Collé Gallo Ardo Sy, a circumcised woman, has managed to help her only daughter escape from the ritual of ‘purification’ organised every seven years. Now that the next ritual is about to happen, four young girls have fled from the village to escape from excision. Moolaadé is a moving, embracing and lifeaffirming film with the power to change long-held attitudes, a film regarded as Sembène’s masterpiece, made when he was already 81 years old.

Milk

The Best Man

Mon 10 Oct at 5.45pm

Tue 25 Oct at 5.50pm

Gus Van Sant • USA 2008 • 2h8m • Digital • 15 - Contains strong language and sex references • Cast: Sean Penn, Josh Brolin.

Franklin J Schaffner • USA 1964 • 1h42m • 35mm • PG • Cast: Henry Fonda, Cliff Robertson, Edie Adams, Margaret Leighton.

This superb biopic, with a transformative performance from Sean Penn, covers the final years of Harvey Milk’s life. He faces bigotry based on his sexual orientation, but responds by spearheading a campaign of activism that organises the gay community into a group with genuine financial strength - that Milk translates into political muscle.

Adapted by Gore Vidal from his play of the same name, The Best Man is a biting political melodrama about a presidential race between an honest but flawed liberal (Henry Fonda) and a brash but ruthless Southerner (Cliff Robertson). Both vying for approval from the outgoing President (Lee Tracy), Franklin Schaffner’s film is an entertaining battle of oneupmanship and political sabotage.

In association with The Scottish Parliament, Milk will be introduced by the Deputy Presiding Officer Linda Fabiani MSP, who will also lead a post-screening discussion with Patrick Harvie MSP, Co-Convenor, Scottish Greens, about the themes in the film.

The Best Man will be introduced by Owen Dudley Edwards, Honorary Fellow at The University of Edinburgh, who will also host a post-screening audience discussion about the historical and political themes raised by the film.

James Stewart’s young senator, upholding true American values in a corrupt Senate House, is quintessential Capra. Sidney Buchman’s crackling dialogue is also lent sharp-tongued conviction by Claude Rains as the slimy senior senator. Wed 9 Nov at 5.40pm

Tue 22 Nov at 6.00pm

Alan J Pakula • USA 1976 • 2h18m • 35mm • English and Spanish with English subtitles • 15 • Cast: Dustin Hoffman, Robert Redford, Jack Warden, Martin Balsam, Hal Holbrook, Jason Robards.

Oliver Stone • USA/France 1991 • 3h26m • Digital • English and Spanish with English subtitles • 15 • Cast: Kevin Costner, Tommy Lee Jones, Kevin Bacon, Gary Oldman, Michael Rooker, Jack Lemmon.

Released during the Carter-Ford presidential race, this film may even have helped to turn the tide in Carter’s favour. It chronicles the real-life story of journalists Bob Woodward (Robert Redford) and Carl Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman), as they uncover the facts behind an attempted burglary at the Democratic Party headquarters at Watergate...

Three years after the death of John F. Kennedy, District Attorney Jim Garrison (Kevin Costner) decides to conduct an in-depth investigation into the President’s murder. Oliver Stone seamlessly blends real footage of Kennedy’s murder with his own re-staged scenes.

In association with The Scottish Parliament, All the President’s Men will be introduced by Deputy Presiding Officer Christine Grahame MSP who will lead a post-screen discussion with Kezia Dugdale MSP about the themes in the film.

In association with The University of Edinburgh, Filmhouse will present a varied programme of Shakespeare adaptations by some of the great filmmakers. A Double Life

Romeo, Juliet & Darkness

Mon 17 Oct at 6.00pm

Sun 23 Oct at 6.10pm

George Cukor • USA 1947 • 1h44m • 35mm • English and Italian with English subtitles • PG • Cast: Ronald Colman, Signe Hasso, Edmond O’Brien, Shelley Winters.

Jiri Weiss • Czechoslovakia 1960 • 1h32m • 35mm • Czech with English subtitles • PG • Cast: Ivan Mistrík, Daniela Smutná.

Earning both an Oscar® and a Golden Globe for its star Ronald Colman, George Cukor’s A Double Life is the suitably dark and melodramatic tale of an impressionable actor - recently divorced from his co-star wife (Signe Hasso) - whose starring role in a hit production of Shakespeare’s Othello turns his mind to murder...

Pavel (Ivan Mistrík), a young student living in Prague in 1942, hides a Jewish girl (Daniela Smutná) in his building’s attic. Amidst the brutality of the occupying German army, love blossoms. When the two are discovered by his mother, she forces the residents of the building to decide whether Hana can remain. The forbidden love of Romeo and Juliet is skilfully placed into this turbulent period of Czech history.

The screening will be introduced by Dr David Sorfa, Senior Lecturer in Film Studies at The University of Edinburgh.

Kiss Me Kate (3D)

Thu 27 Oct at 8.30pm

Mon 31 Oct at 6.05pm (£2 extra charge for 3D)

Peter Greenaway • UK/Netherlands/France/Italy/Japan 1991 • 2h4m 35mm • 15 Cast: John Gielgud, Michael Clark, Michel Blanc.

George Sidney • USA 1953 • 1h49m • Digital • English, French and Italian with English subtitles • U • Cast: Kathryn Grayson, Howard Keel, Ann Miller, Keenan Wynn.

Prospero’s Books engages with Shakespeare’s The Tempest, not as theatre transposed to film but rather through the figure of Prospero (Sir John Gielgud) with issues of art and science, human intelligence and the powers of reason and unreason. The most striking aspect of the film has to do with role of “books”, covering the natural sciences, history, magic, painting, and calligraphy. The screening will be introduced by Dr Suzanne Trill, Senior Lecturer in English at The University of Edinburgh.

Makibefo Wed 2 Nov at 6.15pm Alexander Abela • UK/Madagascar/France 2001 • 1h13m • Digital Malagasy and English with English subtitles • cert tbc - Guideline cert 12A • Cast: Martin Zia, Neoliny Dety, Gilbert Laumord.

This unique adaptation of Macbeth was filmed in Faux Cap on the southern tip of Madagascar and acted (with a great deal of impressive improvisation) by Antandroy fishermen. Shot in high-contrast blackand-white, the austerity of dialogue (all in native Malagasy) gives way to striking visuals that tell the familiar story in a captivating new context. In association with Africa in Motion film festival.

A ‘50s MGM adaptation of the Broadway hit, shot in groundbreaking 3-D, Kiss Me Kate takes The Taming of the Shrew and places it front and centre as the setting for this entertaining tale. Two musical theatre actors - a divorced couple - are cast opposite each other in a major musical version of the Shakespeare play, which has come to the attention of local gangsters who arrive to collect a debt... Conflict, confusion and slapstick naturally ensues. The screening will be introduced by Dr Annette Davison, Senior Lecturer in Music.

A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy Mon 7 Nov at 8.50pm Woody Allen • USA 1982 • 1h28m • 35mm • 15 Cast: Woody Allen, Mia Farrow, Tony Roberts, Mary Steenburgen.

Inspired by Ingmar Bergman’s Smiles of a Summer Night as well as A Midsummer Night’s Dream, this 1982 ensemble comedy was described by Woody Allen as “a small intermezzo with a few laughs” . Set in the early 1900s at a weekend party attended by three couples, the tone is light as their emotional, intellectual and sexual entanglements play out. The screening will be introduced by Dr Andrew Taylor, Head of the Department of English at The University of Edinburgh.

Tue 8 Nov at 5.45pm

Mon 21 Nov at 6.00pm

Kenneth Branagh • UK 1989 • 2h17m • Digital • English and French with English subtitles • 12A • Cast: Kenneth Branagh, Derek Jacobi

Fred M Wilcox • USA 1956 • 1h38m • 35mm • U - Contains mild horror sequence Cast: Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis, Leslie Nielsen.

Directed by and starring Kenneth Branagh, Henry V is a gritty adaptation of Shakespeare’s epic and brutal play. The BAFTA and Academy Award® winning film is widely considered one of the best film adaptations of The Bard’s work, commended for the performances and direction as well as the accessibility of its Shakespearean language.

A US spaceship comes across a remote planet, deserted except for world-wearied Dr. Morbius (Water Pidgeon), his daughter (Anne Francis) and their robot Robby. Something has destroyed the other inhabitants, and now begins to pick on the crew... An iconic sci-fi flick, surprisingly but effectively based on The Tempest, with an ingenious script and special effects, Forbidden Planet also features a youthful Leslie Nielsen as Commander Adams.

The screening will be introduced by Dr Dermot Cavanagh, Senior Lecturer in English at The University of Edinburgh.

The screening will be introduced by Professor James Loxley, Professor of Early Modern Literature at The University of Edinburgh.

Chimes at Midnight Wed 23 Nov at 6.00pm Orson Welles • France/Spain/Switzerland 1965 • 1h53m • Digital • PG - Contains moderate violence • Cast: Orson Welles, Jeanne Moreau.

Falstaff was described by Orson Welles as “Shakespeare’s greatest creation”. Often directly compared to him, his connection to the character is perhaps one of the most organic in all of cinema. Sir John Falstaff is re-imagined and resplendent through Welles’ vision and performance in this portmanteau of five plays. The comedy and warmth remain but, inevitably, these give way to tragedy. The screening will be introduced by Dr Daniel Yacavone, Lecturer in Film Studies at The University of Edinburgh.
