Introduction
THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY
BEFORE I GO TO SLEEP
JIM JARMUSCH - STRANGER THAN PARADISE
MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT
No more Festival. No more Fringe. And Colin Firth’s back! Twice! For cinemas, things are looking up... I’ve often wondered how people choose the films they go to see (if I had the key to this, I suspect I’d be a very rich man), and, in particular, what role the nation’s film critics have to play in it. Film distributor sales bods spend an awful lot of time letting us film bookers know what reviews their films are going to get (yes, they can tell the future!), but I sometimes wonder whether those reviews bring more influence to bear on the cinemas who might book the films than they do on audiences who might pay to watch them. We’ve all been stung at some point by great reviews simply not translating into ticket sales, for whatever reason. Some films can be considered to be somewhat ‘review-proof’. For example, it doesn’t really matter how many 5-star reviews (and there were many!) Lav Diaz’s 4h10m Philippine epic Norte, the End of History gets, the audience for it will be (and was!) small. (But then we don’t play films like that because the reviews are good, we play them because they are good.) Conversely, there are films that, no matter how poorly they are reviewed, people will go and see anyway. The Expendables ‘trilogy’ might be an example of that, though from where I’m sitting the reviews for those actually seem rather generous... There’s another less extreme example of this in our current programme, Lasse Hallström’s Helen Mirrenstarring The Hundred-Foot Journey is not, I predict, going to get stellar reviews (it isn’t what you might call a ‘critic’s film’) but will be thoroughly enjoyed (I also predict) by a large and happy audience. For my part, I read an awful lot of reviews, and as such have learnt, over time, to factor in the writers’ own tastes and proclivities to establish what I’m likely to think of it. Having said that, some critics are so unpredictable (in some cases, I suspect, wilfully) that this system doesn’t always bear the desired fruit. And as if this whole thing wasn’t complicated enough, I just spotted that the Guardian has posted two different reviews for the film Wakolda (which we screened in August), one giving 2 stars and the other 4. Now where does that leave us...?! And what multi- and variously-starred films have we got for you this month...? We get this programme underway with Rowan Joffe’s top drawer Colin Firth/Nicole Kidman-starring thriller/adaptation of SJ Watson’s bestseller Before I Go to Sleep; and classic French and Indian cuisine come head-to-head in the aforementioned and hugely enjoyable The HundredFoot Journey – whatever you do, don’t go in hungry! Colin Firth (we sometimes joke his films keep this cinema afloat) turns up again in Woody Allen’s latest, Magic in the Moonlight, as a magician hired to debunk a medium, played by Emma Stone; Ida is Pawel Pawlikowski’s monochrome masterpiece, telling the story of a young novitiate nun in 1960s Poland who discovers a dark family secret; and if there’s more blackly comedic fun to be had with Stellan Skarsgård in the frozen wastes of northern Norway than in In Order of Disappearance, I ain’t seen it. That doyen of US indie filmmaking, Jim Jarmusch, gets a cheeky little retrospective too, sponsored by our friends at Drambuie. Rod White, Head of Filmhouse

The Hundred-Foot Journey Showing from Fri 5 Sep Lasse Hallström • USA 2014 • 2h2m • DCP English, French and Hindi with English subtitles PG – Contains mild bad language, threat Cast: Helen Mirren, Om Puri, Manish Dayal, Charlotte Le Bon, Amit Shah.
A charming drama from the director of Chocolat. Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal) is a culinary prodigy with the gastronomic equivalent of perfect pitch. When Hassan and his family, led by Papa (Om Puri), move to a quaint village in the South of France with the grand plan of opening an Indian restaurant in the picturesque countryside, they are undeterred by the fact that only 100 feet away stands a Michelinstarred classical French restaurant. However, upon encountering the icy proprietress, Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren), the Kadam family realise they may have bitten off more than they can chew. Outraged by the new arrivals, Madame Mallory is determined to have their business shut down. As cultures clash and food flies, a heated battle escalates between the two establishments – until, that is, Hassan’s passion and talent for French cuisine begin to enchant Madame Mallory, and even she can’t deny this young chef is something special.

One day, terrifying new truths begin to emerge that make her question everything she thinks she knows about her life – as well as everyone in it, including her doctor (Mark Strong) and even her husband (Colin Firth).

This new film from Alex Gibney (The Armstrong Lie, We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks) tells the story of Fela Kuti (1938 - 1997) – his life, his music and his social and political importance. This in-depth look at the man who created Afrobeat (a fusion of jazz, traditional West African rhythms, funk, highlife, and psychedelic rock) brings audiences close to Kuti’s fight against the dictatorial Nigerian government of the 1970s and 1980s. With his audacious music and a great deal of courage, Fela Kuti helped bring a change towards democracy in Nigeria, promoted Pan Africanist politics to the entire world and became an inspiration in the global fight for the rights of all oppressed people.
In Order Of Disappearance Hans Petter Moland • Norway 2014 • 1h57m DCP • Norwegian and Swedish with English subtitles 15 – Contains strong violence, very strong language Cast: Stellan Skarsgård, Tobias Santelmann, Kristofer Hivju, Bruno Ganz, Birgitte Hjort Sørensen.
When placid, hardworking snowplough driver Nils Dickman’s only son is found dead from an apparent drug overdose, he decides to take revenge against those responsible – a ruthless drug gang. He’s outnumbered for sure, but Nils knows the terrain... A hugely enjoyable, gruesome, ingenious, brilliantly-cast, pitch-black comedy set against the wonderfully cinematic white landscape of a rural Norwegian winter. Like Death Wish set in Fargo, but funnier... and bloodier!

Woody Allen • USA 2014 • 1h38m DCP • 12A – Contains moderate sex reference Cast: Colin Firth, Emma Stone, Eileen Atkins, Marcia Gay Harden, Jacki Weaver.
Pawel Pawlikowski • Poland/Denmark 2013 • 1h22m • DCP Polish with English subtitles • 12A – Contains suicide scene Cast: Agata Kulesza, Agata Trzebuchowska, Dawid Ogrodnik, Jerzy Trela, Adam Szyszkowski.
Anton Corbijn • UK/USA/Germany 2014 • 2h2m DCP • 15 – Contains strong language Cast: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rachel McAdams, Grigoriy Dobrygin, Willem Dafoe, Robin Wright, Nina Hoss.
Set in the 1920s on the opulent and idyllic French Riviera, Woody Allen’s latest is an enchanting romantic comedy starring Colin Firth and Emma Stone. The film follows cynical and arrogant Englishman Stanley (Firth), a master illusionist who is invited to the Catledge Family mansion to unmask a possible swindle involving an alluring young clairvoyant named Sophie (Stone). At first, Stanley is confident he can expose Sophie as a fraud in no time. But as he witnesses her accomplish numerous supernatural feats, Stanley begins to question his rational worldview – if Sophie’s powers are real, anything could be possible...
A stunningly beautiful film by Pawel Pawlikowski, the acclaimed director of Last Resort and My Summer of Love, which won the Best Film award at last year’s London Film Festival. Shot in luminous black and white, this graceful and haunting drama explores the life of Anna, an orphan brought up in a convent in Poland. Just before taking her vows, Anna visits her only living relative, her mother’s sister, for the first time. Aunt Wanda, a hard-drinking Communist Party judge who has lost any vestiges of faith, informs Anna of her Jewish heritage; her original name, Ida; and of her parents’ murder during the Nazi occupation. The two women embark on a journey into the wintry countryside to find the parents’ unmarked graves, and dark secrets are unearthed.
Anton Corbijn’s sumptuously shot, impeccably structured adaptation of John le Carré’s 2008 best-selling novel is a thoroughly gripping tale set in the dangerous and dingy world of a post-9/11 German intelligence unit. Tensions are high as unit head Günther Bachmann (a truly accomplished performance by the late Philip Seymour Hoffman) is drawn into a deadly web of intrigue and espionage on the streets of Hamburg. A captivating story full of twists and surprises, expertly brought to life by a thoroughly talented cast. “Hoffman shines in a role that demands not showmanship, but a kind of complexity and contradiction that can be rendered only through the kind of dull character details that he excelled in, accumulating them from the inside out.” - Washington Post

Jim Jarmusch • USA 1980 • 1h15m • DCP 12A – Contains a single use of strong language and references to violence Cast: Chris Parker, Leila Gastil, John Lurie, Richard Boes, Sara Driver.
Jarmusch’s debut feature, 75 minutes of frayed downtown cool, is a touching vision of what it was like to be head over heels with art, love, and oneself in late-1970s New York. “A structured, mature affair, already rippling with the narrative symmetries, evocative allusions and existential absurdities that would mark all Jarmusch’s later works.” Eye for Film
Stranger Than Paradise Tue 16 Sep at 6.15pm & Sun 21 Sep at 3.20pm Jim Jarmusch • USA/West Germany 1984 • 1h29m DCP • 15 – Contains strong language Cast: John Lurie, Eszter Balint, Richard Edson, Cecillia Stark, Danny Rosen.
This low-budget, black-and-white portrait of three directionless young people – a detached New York hipster, his fedora’d best friend, and his 16-year-old Hungarian cousin – established Jarmusch as a major new talent. “Like a French New Wave film by way of Bela Tarr, directed with a hipster American comic sensibility and an outsider’s fascination with the details of the everyday.” - Turner Classic Movies Online

Three rebellious deadbeats (Tom Waits, John Lurie and Roberto Benigni) form an unlikely alliance when they land in the same New Orleans jail cell in this pitch-perfect and endlessly quotable comic odyssey. “The excitement comes from the realization that we are seeing a true filmmaker at work, using film to create a narrative that couldn’t exist on the stage or the printed page of a novel.” - New York Times
This small group portrait of misfits and foreigners adrift in the American South gives attention to the cultural memory of places and a sense of the way taste can both bring people together and keep them apart. “Jarmusch’s formal inventiveness is framed by a rare flair for zany entertainment... one of the best films of the year.” - Time Out
Jarmusch’s only documentary to date is a scrapbook of interviews, archival clips, and concert footage of Neil Young’s band Crazy Horse, shot over the course of their 1996 world tour. “Cuts right to the savage heart of it all, thrusting the music center stage and leaving the rumors and anecdotes (most of them, anyway) to the biographers.” - Austin Chronicle

One of Jarmusch’s warmest films, Night on Earth veers from broad comedy to more sober territory with its set of five taxicab vignettes in LA, New York, Paris, Rome and Helsinki. “Brimming with exactly the sort of fragmentary exchanges and subliminal missed connections that most moviemakers leave out – and that, for Jarmusch, are about the only things worth putting in.” - Entertainment Weekly
Jim Jarmusch • USA/Germany/Japan 1995 • 2h DCP • 18 – Contains strong language and violence Cast: Johnny Depp, Gary Farmer, Lance Henriksen, Michael Wincott, John Hurt, Robert Mitchum.
Jarmusch’s masterpiece is a hypnotic Western about the spiritual rebirth of a dying 19th-century accountant (Johnny Depp) that doubles as a barbed reflection on America’s treatment of its indigenous people. “Looser in structure than the director’s earlier work, but pervaded with the same deadpan humour and superb imagery (cameraman, Robby Müller), this is an original and very weird account of the American wilderness.” - Time Out

After receiving an unsigned letter informing him that he’s the father of a 19-year-old son, Bill Murray’s ageing, lethargic lothario Don Johnston sets out on a tour through America to visit a series of five old flames. “Moving, mirthful and minimalist... a bittersweet treat.” - BBC
Jarmusch’s intoxicating thriller is a spy film gutted of action, a mystery that takes place almost entirely in the time between plot points, and a James Bond movie whose 007 hails from the Ivory Coast rather than Scotland. “A work of dazzling formal discipline that riffs on the simple notion of repetition and variation.” - Time Out
Only Lovers Left Alive Tue 28 Oct at 6.00pm & Sat 1 Nov at 3.30pm Jim Jarmusch • UK/Germany/France/Cyprus/USA 2013 • 2h3m DCP • English, French and Arabic with English subtitles 15 – Contains strong language Cast: Tom Hiddleston, Tilda Swinton, Mia Wasikowska, John Hurt, Anton Yelchin.
Jarmusch’s stylish take on the vampire genre, starring Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton, is a hyper-literate mélange of science, literature, music, history and deadpan humour. “Possibly the funniest – and certainly the coolest – vampire film around.” - Film4

THE AFRICAN QUEEN
The First World War in Cinema A four-year series of films, programmed in association with the University of Edinburgh, that relate to the First World War, some dated to coincide with the real events of 100 years ago and others which are not tied to specific dates.
The African Queen Thu 11 Sep at 6.10pm John Huston • UK 1951 • 1h45m DCP • PG – Contains moderate threat and violence Cast: Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, Robert Morley.
John Huston’s 1951 classic The African Queen is based on the 1935 novel of the same name by CS Forester, and is set shortly after the outbreak of the First World War. The book itself was inspired by real events of June-October 1915, in which undistinguished Royal Navy officer Geoffrey Spicer-Simson was despatched to lead an expedition to Lake Tanganyika (in German East Africa – now Burundi, Rwanda and Tanzania) to sink a fleet of German steamers. This involved, amongst other things, hauling two well-armed motorboats (that SpicerSimson named Mimi and Toutou) 150 miles across rough country and down the hazardous Lualaba river. This story forms the basis for Giles Foden’s 2010 novel Mimi and Toutou’s Big Adventure: The Battle of Lake Tanganyika. Coming soon in this season: The Battles of the Coronel and Falkland Islands (1927), Raymond Bernard’s Wooden Crosses (1932) and Joyeux Noël (2005).

Find out how Scotland’s national dance company translate prose to poise in a special making-of short with the choreographer and dancers, shot behind the scenes at Scottish Ballet’s headquarters. THE GRADUATE
SPECIALEVENT
The Graduate Tue 9 Sep at 6.10pm Mike Nichols • USA 1967 • 1h45m • DCP • 15 Cast: Dustin Hoffman, Anne Bancroft, Katharine Ross, William Daniels, Murray Hamilton.
In arguably the most iconic movie of the ‘Hollywood New Wave’ of the 1960’s, Dustin Hoffman plays Benjamin Braddock, promising academic and track star, who returns to Los Angeles after graduation. At a party thrown by his parents, he his lured by old family friend Mrs Robinson into taking her home. He first flees from her advances, but shortly thereafter begins an affair with her. But then Ben’s unwitting parents goad him into taking the Robinsons’ daughter, Elaine, on a date... An intelligent, bittersweet comedy drama with wonderful performances and a sublime soundtrack by Simon and Garfunkel.
The Graduate is being screened as part of the nationwide ‘Cultural Memory and British Cinema-going of the 1960s’ project, based at University College, London. Although many cultural commentators feel that sixties films sum up the changes transforming British society at the time, the films themselves reveal little about how they were received and remembered. The project aims to uncover how cinemagoers actually remember the films they saw. The screening will be introduced by film historian Dr Melvyn Stokes, and you are invited to an informal discussion about your memories of filmgoing in the sixties afterwards.

After making a name for himself with such underground gross-out epics as Pink Flamingos and Desperate Living, director John Waters made a bid for somewhat wider acceptance with this black comedy, which is sedate only by the standards of his previous work. Francine Fishpaw (Divine) is a housewife whose life has become a living hell. Her husband Elmer runs a porno cinema and is having an affair with his secretary. Francine’s life has become so miserable that her dog commits suicide rather than witness it, but a light appears on the horizon – Todd Tomorrow (Tab Hunter), the handsome and dashing owner of a local drive-in specialising in art films... Screening in ‘Odorama’ – pick up your scratch ‘n’ sniff card on the way in!
Walter Hill • USA 1979 • 1h33m • DCP • 15 – Contains strong language, sex references and moderate gang warfare Cast: Michael Beck, James Remar, Dorsey Wright, Brian Tyler, David Harris.
One of the great cult films of all time, The Warriors features a brilliantly simple plot. At a gathering of all the street gangs in New York City, the organiser of the event is assassinated, and the Warriors from Coney Island are blamed. The gang then has to travel all the way across the city back to their turf with hundreds of other gang members and thousands of cops after them, all in one night... “Walter Hill has elevated his story of a novice gang on the run into a heroic epic of Arthurian dimensions, with sex as sorcery and the flick-knife as sword. Anyone expecting gritty realism will be disappointed, because Hill is offering something better: shooting entirely on NY locations at night, he has transformed the city into a phantasmagoric labyrinth of weird tribes in fantastic dress and make-up who move over (and under) the streets as untouched as troglodytes by the civilisation sleeping around them.” Time Out

Tartan Features: Micro-Budget Feature Filmmaking in Scotland Mon 29 Sep at 6.15pm 1h30m • 15
A panel discussion introducing and discussing a new feature film movement in Scotland that believes that micro budget feature film production can co-exist and even feed into the larger Scottish industry as a whole, creating an infrastructure for skills and talent development while encouraging a sustainable industry. Over the past year several feature films have been made in Scotland at budgets of £1,000 to £50,000, using Scottish crew and talent, screening at International festivals and picking up awards. At this event the panel will showcase some of this work through trailers and clips as well as holding an open discussion with the audience as to how things can progress in the future. The panel will be made up of representatives from Write Shoot Cut, Digital Onset, Blue Iris Films, Blackbox Digital Media and more. Tickets £6/£5

“This intelligent film proves it is the smaller, more personal stance that can ultimately make the bigger difference.” The Guardian “If you want to defeat a boxer, challenge him to a game of chess.” From London, Ukraine and Syria, to the US, Iran and Spain… hailing the revolutionary spirit of clowns, music or ping pong, Everyday Rebellion is a moving and playful celebration of the triumph of creativity over repression, and a vibrant reminder that power must always give way to humanity. Guided by evidence that boldly asserts non-violence is twice as effective as violence in creating change, millions of people are dropping their fists and adopting peaceful tactics to resist blind. Conceived as part of a transmedia project on non-violence, this panoramic how-to protest guide vividly demonstrates that the future of civil disobedience has never looked brighter.
Sat 20 Sep at 3.15pm Benoît Chieux & Jacques-Rémy Girerd • France/Luxembourg 2013 • 1h29m • DCP • French with English subtitles • PG With the voices of Sabine Azéma, Josiane Balasko, François Morel, Bruno Lochet.
A hand-drawn fantasy collision of love, power and biodiversity – perfect for all ages. Aunt Hilda lives for her plants. While she nurtures her own private paradise inside a fairy-tale-like palace, a powerful global company is developing a new laboratory-created plant that promises to end world hunger. But Hilda has seen it all before, and believes the price the world will have to pay will be too great. As the super-plant multiplies across the world, destroying every weaker species, Hilda and her friend the professor realise they have no choice but to fight Dolorés, the larger-than-life company boss whose plans are motivated by much more than greed. Presented in association with WDM Screening preceded by family-friendly activities.
We look forward to welcoming one of the film’s co-directors, Arman T Riahi, to the screening on 19 September, to inspire creative and effective personal action after the film. SEASON CONTINUES OVERLEAF

Performance theatre tackles the spectacle of politics headon in this fascinating unpicking of the democratic process. At a time when so many in Scotland are grappling with the kind of society they want to build and live in, Ash & Money feels like essential viewing. In 2010, a series of party funding scandals rocked Estonia. To expose political hypocrisy and manipulation, a young theatre group took on their boldest, most ambitious project to date: the creation of a new political party. Was it a hoax or were they for real? A pertinent, thoughtprovoking exploration of social issues that exposes the weaknesses of democracy while pointing to the power of civil society.
Beathe Hofseth & Susann Østigaard • Norway/India 2013 1h20m • DCP • Tamil with English subtitles • 15 • Documentary
A gripping story of defiance, filmed over three eventful years in the life of an inspiring young woman who refuses to compromise her integrity or her dreams. Thulasi is a Dalit or ‘untouchable’. Born outside of caste, she ran away from home aged 14 to escape forced marriage. Now a promising boxer in her early twenties, she continues to defy society’s expectations – in and outside the ring. Yet despite her talent, focus and determination, Thulasi has been denied the opportunities she deserves. Undefeated, she punches well above her ‘light-fly’ weight – battling poverty, corruption, sexual harassment and the pressure to marry – to win the right to define her own path. Winner: Oxfam Global Justice Award
We look forward to welcoming co-director Ene-Liis Semper to explore the film further.
Stay with us after the films: all Take One Action screenings include simple, inspiring opportunities for audiences to connect and share ideas for creative and effective personal action. Please take your seats in the cinema at the advertised time.

“A film whose sharp storytelling and engrossing protagonists... give it greater eye-opening potential than a dozen front-page scoops.” - Variety When conflict rages, how do you prove whether war crimes are being committed – and how do you get the world to take notice? This close-up look at a team of Human Rights Watch investigators offers unprecedented access to the front-lines of the fight for global justice. E-Team follows four ordinary individuals with extraordinary responsibilities, as they document and report on human rights violations committed in several war zones. It succeeds, with vivid immediacy, in conveying the urgency, the danger and the complexity that underpin their work – and the difficulties of balancing a family life with such emotionally gruelling activities. A powerful insight into one of the most crucial weapons against the abuse of power: the battle to bring perpetrators to the full glare of international attention and, hopefully, to justice.

“Nails the way a spontaneous act of courage can focus the mind and clarify an ideology.” - NY Times “A gripping look at an eco-activist’s journey, (...) a vital and involving documentary.” - LA Times To save vast expanses of Utah being auctioned for oil and gas leases, nascent activist Tim DeChristopher successfully bid $1.7 million he didn’t have on thousands of acres of land. Arrested and threatened with prison, he defies the courts to inspire countless others to take action for better environmental policies, arguing that civil disobedience has become one of our most powerful tools in the fight against climate change. As hopeful and defiant as its protagonist, Bidder 70 draws a powerful portrait of a man coming to grips with the destruction we have wrought on the planet and deciding to keep up the fight. Presented in association with Christian Aid and Stop Climate Chaos
Can people who have been discriminated against for generations fight for their fundamental rights without resorting to violence? Adivasis, India’s aborigines, have long borne the brunt of India’s more destructive agricultural policies and large-scale infrastructure projects, as land grabs and environmental destruction rob them of their homes and traditional existence. In 2012, hundreds of thousands of them embarked upon a country-wide peace march, spanning hundreds of kilometres, to demand a life of dignity. Descending en masse upon Delhi, they vowed not to be moved until their demands, in which land rights were key, be heard and acceded to. Millions Can Walk provides fascinating insight into their lives and, in bearing witness to the philosophy of nonviolent resistance at the heart of this epic march, offers an inspiring tribute to their perseverance. Presented in association with Christian Aid and WDM
“Intelligent, persuasive and accessible, a gentle but urgent clarion call to action.” - Toronto Star Does inequality matter? Arguments against its corrosive effects rarely come as cogently and powerfully expressed as in this rousing exposé. Robert Reich, who served in the Ford, Carter and Clinton administrations, charts the history of America’s rich/poor divide and argues that the status quo is unsustainable. An inspiring and respected teacher, Reich presents his facts with oodles of wit and charm, in a film that mixes extracts from his Berkeley lectures with encounters with ordinary Americans struggling to make ends meet. But this is not just an American story: the UK is one of the most unequal countries in the developed world. In Scotland the three richest families own more wealth than 20% of the population. What are the root causes of inequality and what can we do about it? Join us to find out in a refreshingly entertaining way. Presented in association with Oxfam and Unison Stay with us after the film for conversations with representatives from Oxfam and Unison.

“A powerful and (...) moving tribute to organised dissent and the power of the people.” - Screen Daily On February 15 2003, millions of people, in over 800 cities across the world, marched against the impending invasion of Iraq, seen as a pretext for US and UK geo-political gain. The largest mobilisation in human history – reported as a failure – is powerfully retold in this moving and dramatic film, illustrative of the movement as a tipping point for global social change, and a devastating critique of the state of democracy today. With gripping contributions from a remarkable cast including Damon Albarn, Danny Glover, Richard Branson, Noam Chomsky, Ken Loach, Tony Benn, Jesse Jackson, Tariq Ali and Hans Blix, We Are Many is a vital record for vigilance against present and future wars. We look forward to welcoming director Amir Amirani to the screening on 27 September, for a Q&A session exploring the film and the legacy of the anti-war movement.
“Refreshing...thoughtful...” - Indiewire “Most people could learn a lot from these little activists.” Washington Post As a Kolkata slum dweller, your chances of access to safe drinking water, your health prospects and the likelihood of your accessing education will remain dismally low. Resignation dominates in the adult world, but, as The Revolutionary Optimists shows, the most formidable activists pushing for change are the youngest. Amlan Ganguly, a genial lawyer turned community educator, faces down child labour, early marriage and endemic poverty with the unfailing belief that children must meaningfully participate in the decisions and factors that affect their lives. He runs a community project that empowers children to take an active role in improving their community: together they help cut malaria rates; fight for better access to water and chip away at gender discrimination. Filmed over several years, The Revolutionary Optimists sketches a hopeful canvas of change in motion, as Ganguly and the children he works alongside mine the strength and vision to build a slow, joyful revolution. Presented in association with NIDOS We are delighted to be welcoming Amlan Ganguly, along with inspiring agents of change working to empower children in Scotland.

Sat 27 Sep at 8.20pm & Fri 3 Oct at 1.00pm YOUNG PROGRAMMERS APPROVED!
“Has a strong claim to being the most ambitious American film ever made.” - The Guardian Banned for a decade in the US and screening in the festival on a rare 16mm print, this pioneering agitprop drama traces in absorbing neorealist style the interpersonal contours of a mineworkers’ strike against so-called ‘austerity measures’. When safety cutbacks in a zinc mine lead to injury, Mexican and US miners withdraw their labour. But only when the workers’ wives get involved – bringing a moving and lyrical definition to solidarity – does the balance of power start to shift. Featuring mainly real-life miners and their families – “the first feature film made of labour, by labour, and for labour,” Salt of the Earth remains a fresh and rousing call for nonviolent resistance in the face of consumer and corporate exploitation. Presented in association with Unison Special offer: concession price tickets available to all Unison members with evidence of current membership.

“This cool and incisive snapshot of global capitalism at work is as remarkable for its access as for its refusal to judge.” - NY Times Brad Pitt exec produces this extraordinary exposé of the hope, ambition, scepticism and corruption that threaten to exacerbate Africa’s resource curse and leave its ordinary citizens behind. In Ghana, a small American energy company fights to hold on to its discovery of oil just as a new government comes into power. Meanwhile, in Nigeria, an established industry continues to take its toll from the people, most notably in the Niger Delta. Amid political uncertainty, power-plays unravel, shares and reputations are gambled, and pipelines attacked by militants demanding more distribution of the revenues. With unprecedented access and an unflinching, original eye, this Faustian doc foregrounds the global drama behind the fuel we all continue to take for granted. Presented in association with NIDOS
“Profoundly moving, radiantly smart.” - Film Journal International In 2014, Scotland legalised same-sex marriage: only the 17th country ever to do so. Reflecting this cause across the Atlantic, The Case Against 8 charts the deeply moving stories of two gay couples in their quest to take on a system stacked against them. In 2008, Californians passed Proposition 8, a measure that repealed the right of same-sex couples to marry. In its wake, two of American politics’ heavyweight legal foes – Bush and Gore’s respective councils Ted Olson and David Boies – unite their differing ideologies to the same end: to overturn the amendment. Shot over five years, with unparalleled access to the key players in the controversy, this Sundance award-winning doc brings vividly to life one of the most significant civil rights battles in recent decades. “The majesty and beauty of water at its most pure.” - Los Angeles Times “Mesmerizing.” - Variety Immersive environmental cinema at its best: multiaward winning director Jennifer Baichwal (Manufactured Landscapes) returns with this mesmerising symphony on humankind’s relationship with water, reflected through the vision of internationally acclaimed photo artist Edward Burtynsky. Shot in stunning ultra-high definition, Watermark plunges you into the turbulent interconnections between our seas and watercourses and neo-industrial human endeavour. Baichwal and Burtynsky take us to vast, floating farms, the biggest arch dam in the world, the leather tanneries of Dhaka, the US Surf Open, and the Kumbh Mela in Allahabad, where thirty million people gather for a sacred bath in the Ganges. Tumultuous, lush, unfamiliar and epic, Watermark asks how we are drawn to water, what we learn from it, and what the consequences of its use are.

Last year, it was the uplifting Girl Rising. In 2012, it was our premiere of Oscar nominee Chasing Ice. This year, it could be a Sundance winner or an exciting newcomer. What’s certain is that it will have fired the imagination and social spirits of hundreds of festival goers in the preceding days and weeks so, whatever you do, don’t miss it! “A tender, original debut feature.” -” Le Nouvel Observateur This entertaining adventure about a giraffe-obsessed boy offers a tender fable of a father’s love triumphing over adversity. Loosely based on a real-life story, it is also a subtle reflection on the absurdities of life under occupation. In many ways, Ziad is a lucky boy: his dad, Yacine, is a vet at the zoo and Ziad spends as much time as he wants with the zoo’s giraffes, his favourite animals. But Ziad lives in the West Bank… When the male giraffe dies during an Israeli air raid, the traumatised female, Rita, stops feeding. Alarmed by his son’s despair, Yacine promises to find Rita a mate. But in a Palestinian zoo so strapped for cash that bears are fed carrots, fulfilling such a promise might well take a miracle. Presented in association with the Scottish Palestinian Forum Screening preceded by family-friendly activities.

Introduction to European Cinema
The Great Beauty La grande bellezza
Sunrise A Song of Two Humans
Wed 24 Sep at 5.45pm
Wed 8 Oct at 6.15pm
Now in its tenth year at Filmhouse, Introduction to European Cinema returns for 2014/15 with a completely new programme of films. The only season of its kind in the UK, IEC provides a great opportunity to see some of the classics of European cinema on the big screen, many of which are very rarely shown. Curated by specialists in European cinema from the University of Edinburgh¹s Division of European Languages and Cultures, the screenings form part of a University course, Introduction to European Cinema, but you don¹t need to be a student to come along! Each screening will be preceded by a short introduction by Dr Leanne Dawson (Lecturer in German and Film Studies at the University of Edinburgh and IEC Course Organiser) or another University of Edinburgh academic working on European Cinema. The rest of this term’s screenings were still to be confirmed as we went to print, but will be listed in next month’s programme. To keep up to date with screening dates and times, ‘like’ IEC’s Facebook page ‘Introduction to European Cinema at Filmhouse’ or follow @Filmhouse on Twitter.
Paolo Sorrentino • Italy/France 2013 • 2h21m • DCP Italian, Japanese, Spanish and Chinese with English subtitles 15 – Contains sexualised nudity and hard drug use Cast: Toni Servillo, Carlo Verdone, Sabrina Ferilli, Carlo Buccirosso.
FW Murnau • USA 1927 • 1h34m 35mm • Silent with recorded music track U – Contains melodrama and very mild violence Cast: George O’Brien, Janet Gaynor, Margaret Livingston.
In Paolo (The Consequences of Love, Il Divo) Sorrentino’s intoxicating cinematic fresco of contemporary Rome, Toni Servillo plays Jep Gambardella, a long-stalled writer and wealthy bon vivant whom we first meet turning 65 in grand style. A visit from the widower of an old girlfriend provokes memories of young love, and Jep’s dormant creative instincts begin to stir...
One of the greatest films ever made, Sunrise has rarely been equalled in its sheer physical beauty, its romantic intensity, its emotional poignancy, and its extraordinarily creative use of the cinematic medium. Billed as ‘A Song of Two Humans’, it’s a landmark in the history of cinema that turns melodrama into high art with the story of a hard-up farmer (George O’Brien) whose affair with a city girl (Margaret Livingston) leads him to the brink of killing his doting wife (Janet Gaynor).
The Last Laugh Der letzte Mann Wed 1 Oct at 6.00pm FW Murnau • Germany 1924 • 1h15m 35mm • Silent with recorded music track U – Contains no sex, violence or bad language Cast: Emil Jannings, Maly Delschaft, Max Hiller, Emilie Kurz.
The 1924 film in which FW Murnau freed his camera from its stationary tripod and took it on a flight of imagination and expression that changed the way movies were made. Emil Jannings is the hotel doorman whose life is ruined when he is demoted to washroom attendant, and his beautiful uniform is taken away from him.
Filmhouse Explorer Get a half-price ticket to any of the films in this season with Filmhouse Explorer – see page 4 for details!
Battleship Potemkin Bronenosets Potyomkin Wed 15 Oct at 6.15pm Sergei Eisenstein • USSR 1925 • 1h12m DCP • Silent with recorded music track PG – Contains moderate violence Cast: Aleksandr Antonov, Vladimir Barski, Grigori Alexandrov.
It’s 1905 and the words of Lenin are reverberating throughout Russia: “Revolution is war. Of all the wars known in history, it is the only lawful, rightful, just and truly great war.” The crew of the czarist battleship Potemkin have had their fill of the maggoty meat being served them, and they rise up in revolt. Naturally, the film is close to political propaganda, but it is also a historical document – today perhaps most importantly for the history of film – and its technical and visual accomplishments are second to none. A must-see for anyone interested in the art of film.

Andrei Zvyagintsev • Russia 2003 • 1h50m 35mm • Russian with English subtitles 12A – Contains moderate emotional intensity and threat Cast: Vladimir Garin, Ivan Dobronravov, Konstantin Lavronenko, Natalya Vdovina.
Andrei and Ivan are teen brothers in the throes of adolescence when their long-lost father suddenly reappears after a 12-year absence. Their mother and grandmother seem to take it in their stride, but the boys don’t know what to make of this outsider who for them has only existed in ancient family photos. When he suggests a fishing trip, they hesitantly jump at the chance to get to know him. Once on the road, they discover he’s no better at being a dad than they are at being sons. The older, more pliable Andrei adapts to this new reality fairly quickly, but the more nervous, thoughtful Ivan resists this stranger’s attempts to enter his life. Constantly surprising and filled with beautiful images and performances.
