“You’re not a real cinema. You don’t even sell popcorn!” A cinema like us can have issues with perception. An old church with high windows you can’t see into, with less of the external paraphernalia one might associate with a cinema. It’s a marketing challenge, for sure. Everyone knows what a multiplex is and exists for. (It’s where you go to slurp Coke® and munch popcorn noisily, talk, text, and ‘smartphone’ your ‘friends’ to tell them you’re at the cinema, isn’t it?) Our core function is perhaps not quite so widely, readily understood, though I’m never entirely sure why. It is just films ultimately, albeit only the good ones… (?!) I recall many years ago an elderly geezer I got talking to in an infamous Tollcross hostelry referring to Filmhouse as “that porn cinema on Lothian Road”; one time a taxi driver referred to it as “that private club place opposite The Bull and Bush?” when I asked to be ferried here. “That cinema opposite the Ambassador Sauna” was another, as written, drily, by an erstwhile manager of the Cameo (you know, the ‘independent’ Cineworld-owned cinema in Tollcross). More often than not though, I’d hear “the place that shows those weird foreign films”. Thankfully, such perceptions are less prevalent than they once were. Too many films, too little space! If I were you I’d make sure I didn’t miss Julieta, Captain Fantastic and Hunt for the Wilderpeople, easily the staff favourite at EIFF this year. Oh, also, Woody Allen’s Café Society. The very fine Little Men. Oh, and the splendid wine doc, Sour Grapes. Oh, and Spanish classic El Sur. And then there’s the Take One Action Film Festival… Incidentally, the quote at the top of the page was hurled at my then boss across the room by a Cameo staffer at a ‘Save The Cameo’ public meeting at the time of its proposed closure back in 2005. It’s a great quote. We still use it on occasion, in mocking self-deprecation. Rod White, Head of Filmhouse

Julieta

Things to Come

Showing to Thu 22 Sep

Showing from Fri 2 Sep

Pedro Almodövar • Spain 2016 • 1h39m • Digital • Spanish with English subtitles • 15 - Contains strong sex.

Mia Hansen-Løve • France/Germany 2016 • 1h42m • Digital • French, English and German with English subtitles 12A - Contains infrequent strong language, drug misuse.

Cast: Emma Suárez, Adriana Ugarte, Inma Cuesta, Michelle Jenner.

Pedro Almadóvar’s twentieth feature, inspired by three short stories by Canadian writer Alice Munro, centres around twin performances by Emma Suárez and Adriana Ugarte as the titular character at different stages of life. From young Julieta’s (Ugarte) chance encounter and whirlwind romance with Xoan (Daniel Grao) to, via guilt-ridden loss, her relationship with teenage daughter Antïa (Priscilla Delgado) in later life, Julieta retains the colour and texture of the Spaniard’s previous work despite its deeply emotional dramatic focus.

L’avenir

Cast: Isabelle Huppert, André Marcon, Roman Kolinka, Edith Scob.

Philosophy teacher Nathalie (Isabelle Huppert) abruptly finds herself in a summer of personal revolution. Upon finding out that her husband is leaving her and with her mother’s death imminent, she is faced with untethered freedom for the first time in many years. Wrestling with publishers over her book’s cover artwork, swithering about what to do with her mother’s pet cat and sparring with a young protégé (Roman Kalinka), Nathalie takes her first steps into an uncertain future...

NEW RELEASE

Hunt for the Wilderpeople Showing from Fri 16 Sep Taika Waititi • New Zealand 2016 • 1h42m • Digital • 12A • Cast: Julian Dennison, Sam Neill, Rima Te Wiata, Rhys Darby.

One of the funniest and most delightful films of the year, The Hunt for the Wilderpeople is a pleasure from beginning to end. Writer/ director Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows) has crafted an effortlessly funny odd-couple story about rap-loving troublesome orphan Ricky (newcomer Julian Dennison) and gnarly gruff loner Hec (Sam Neill) who end up being chased by police deep into the New Zealand bush. A compassionate, generous, engaging and often laugh-out-loud funny film.

Rudy Kurniawan was, it was rumoured, a wine savant, had an expert memory for taste and in 2006 made $35 million in two wine auctions from the sale of his wine. In 2008, however, a French wine producer realised that wine from his family’s domain was being sold from a year they hadn’t produced it... Featuring obsessive collectors, outraged wine producers, suspect auction houses and specialist FBI personnel, Sour Grapes is a fascinating documentary telling of an ‘Emperor’s New Clothes’ tale for the modern age.

Woody Allen • USA 2016 • 1h36m • Digital • 12A

Cast: Viggo Mortensen, Frank Langella, Kathryn Hahn.

Cast: Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Steve Carell, Blake Lively.

Deep in the woodland of the Pacific Northwest, away from society, a father (Viggo Mortensen) dedicates his life to transforming his six young children into extraordinary adults through rigorous physical and intellectual training. When a tragedy strikes the family, however, they are forced to leave this self-created paradise and begin a journey into the outside world that challenges his idea of what it means to be a parent and brings into question everything he’s taught them.

Set in the Hollywood Golden Age of the 1930s, Allen’s latest annual effort is a pleasingly charming comedy-of-manners with enjoyable turns from his young leads Jesse Eisenberg and (in particular) Kristen Stewart. Bobby, a young Bronx native moves, to Hollywood where he falls in love with the secretary (Stewart) of his powerful uncle (Steve Carell), an agent to the stars. After returning to New York he is swept up in the vibrant world of high society nightclub life.

CLASSIC RE-RELEASE

Losing Ground Tue 13 Sep at 3.25pm & 6.10pm Kathleen Collins • USA 1982 • 1h26m • Digital Cast: Seret Scott, Bill Gunn, Duane Jones, Billie Allen.

The first feature directed by a black female American director, Losing Ground is a wry, smart comedydrama that was very nearly lost to obscurity following a meagre release in 1982. Philosophy professor Sara (Seret Scott) and her husband Victor (William Gunn) are entering the prime of their lives, and yet their interests are diverging rapidly. With Sara playing the lead in a smitten student’s amateur film and Victor living upstate surrounded by young women, it’s a perfect recipe for jealousy....

The Confession is a gripping account of the rise of modern jihad, its descent into terror and the disastrous reaction of the West. In 2001, Moazzam Begg was abducted by the US military and under interrogation gave a forced confession, admitting to being an Al Qaeda operative. Begg was held and tortured in detention sites in Kandahar and Bagram. This extraordinary documentary captures the entirety of Begg’s story in an in-depth interview, from his forced confession and testimony as a free man, to his experience as a British Muslim and living the War on Terror.

CLASSIC RE-RELEASE

El Sur The South Mon 26 to Thu 29 Sep Victor Erice • Spain/France 1983 • 1h34m • Digital • Spanish with English subtitles • PG Cast: Omero Antonutti, Sonsoles Aranguren, Icïar Bollaïn.

Based on the novel by Adelaida Garcïa Morales, El Sur is a delicately realised yet haunting portrait of maturation, estrangement, alienation, and dislocation, about a young girl, Estrella (played in her teenage years by a young Icïar Bollaïn), whose father harbours a secret. One of the great unfinished European films (originally scripted as two and a half hours long) it was recently listed by Pedro Almodóvar as one of his favourite films from Spanish cinema - “I cry every time I watch it”, he remarked.

Daesh Deserters Speak Out

Salam Neighbor

Tue 6 Sep at 6.10pm

Wed 7 Sep at 6.10pm

Thomas Dandois, François-Xavier Tregan • France 2016 • 52m Digital • German, English and French with English subtitles 12A Documentary

Zach Ingrasci, Chris Temple • USA 2015 • 1h15m • Digital English and Arabic with English subtitles • 12A • Documentary

Personal testimonies from Islamic State defectors and those who have helped them escape. This exceptional documentary reveals what daily life is like inside Daesh and looks at the conditions surrounding the dangerous work of exfiltration. In southeast Turkey, a few dozen kilometres from Syria, at great risk to themselves, a clandestine network is exfiltrating fighters who have decided to leave. For the first time, these deserters have agreed to give a detailed account of the roles they played and what life is like under the yoke of Islamic State. The screening will be accompanied by a short film.

What is it like to live in a refugee camp home to 80,000 other people? Zach Ingrasci and Chris Temple chose to find out - by moving in themselves. The young filmmakers were granted unprecedented access to the refugee camp in Za’atari, Jordan: to live there for one month and film it all. This is a project that poignantly and with a youthful sensitivity explores the human nuances behind the media’s often one-sided coverage of life as a refugee. The screening will be followed by a discussion/ Q&A.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

Music by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis Sat 10 Sep at 2.45pm & 8.00pm

Cast: Guy Pearce, Danny Huston, Emily Watson, Ray Winstone.

Andrew Dominik • USA 2007 • 2h40m • 35mm • 15 - Contains strong violence and sex references

A bloody, fascinating Aussie western, The Proposition stars Guy Pearce as an outlaw put in an unenviable position by a British copper (Ray Winstone): either track down and kill his loony older brother (Danny Huston), or his younger sibling will be executed. The desperate story plays out in the stunning but spartan barren Outback - a place as hard and unforgiving as the men who roam it. It’s a savagely entertaining look at the nature of man. The 3.30pm screening is priced £6.00/£4.50

Cast: Brad Pitt, Casey Affleck, Sam Rockwell, Mary-Louise Parker.

This masterful Western by New Zealand director Andrew Dominik (Chopper) delves into the private life and public exploits of the US’s most notorious outlaw. As the charismatic and unpredictable Jesse James plans his next great robbery, he wages war on his enemies, who are trying to collect the reward money - and the glory - riding on his capture. But the greatest threat to his life may ultimately come from those he trusts the most.

The Road

Music by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis Sun 11 Sep at 3.35pm & 8.45pm John Hillcoat • USA 2009 • 1h52m • 35mm • 15 - Contains infrequent strong violence, language and gory images

20,000 Days on Earth Mon 12 Sep at 3.25pm & 8.45pm Iain Forsyth & Jane Pollard • UK 2014 • 1h37m • Digital 15 - Contains strong language, nudity detail Documentary featuring Nick Cave, Warren Ellis, Ray Winstone.

Cast: Viggo Mortensen, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Charlize Theron.

A brilliantly directed and largely faithful adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s novel, The Road is also an unforgettable piece of filmmaking in its own right. A man (Viggo Mortensen) and his young son (Kodi Smit-McPhee) travel alone through a postapocalyptic landscape, ravaged by an unspecified catastrophe. Man and boy head towards the coast, not knowing if anything awaits them, trying to keep alive ideas of goodness and civilisation in a world where survival is a daily struggle.

The Road to God Knows Where Tue 13 Sep at 3.30pm & 8.45pm Uli M. Schüppel • Germany 1990 • 1h29m • Digital • 12A Documentary

With The Road to God Knows Where, young German director Uli M. Schüppel - armed with a 16mm camera and a cassette machine - set out on a fiveweek odyssey of the USA with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. Sch√ºppel was primarily interested in the six personalities of the band, unobtrusively observing their days, nights and on-stage performances. A far cry from the usual rock’n’roll tour film, the result is a documentary packed with candid, amusing and surprisingly profound moments.

A fictitious 24 hours in the life of musician and international cultural icon Nick Cave. With frank insights and an intimate portrait of the artistic process, the film examines what makes us who we are, and celebrates the transformative power of the creative spirit. We meet those who have affected his life, personally and professionally, including hilarious moments shared with his regular collaborator Warren Ellis. These voices from the past revisit Cave in daydream-like scenes as he drives through his adopted hometown of Brighton.

U.S. Politics in Film

TICKET OFFER

The next few months promise high political drama as the race for the White House heats up, in what has proved a uniquely unpredictable and interesting U.S. election year. There’s a long history of great filmmaking about U.S. elections, and about American politics more generally. Over the coming weeks we’ll be working in partnership with The Scottish Parliament’s Festival of Politics and the University of Edinburgh, with the support of the U.S. Consulate General Edinburgh, to present some of the highlights of this tradition. Each screening will be followed by a discussion about the film and the issues it raises. Guests will include leading politicians and others working in frontline politics, as well as scholars and commentators. This unique season will coincide with the Harry Benson: Seeing America exhibition on display at the Scottish Parliament from 12 August to 3 December 2016. More information on this FREE exhibition can be found at www.parliament.scot/visitandlearn/98066.aspx

The Manchurian Candidate

Frost/Nixon

Tue 6 Sep at 5.50pm

Tue 27 Sep at 5.45pm

John Frankenheimer • USA 1962 • 2h6m • Digital • 12A • Cast: Frank Sinatra, Laurence Harvey, Janet Leigh, Angela Lansbury.

Ron Howard • USA/UK/France 2008 • 2h2m • Digital • 15 Cast: Michael Sheen, Frank Langella, Kevin Bacon, Sam Rockwell.

Korean War veteran Major Marco (Frank Sinatra) is troubled by a recurring nightmare in which Congressional Medal of Honor hero Raymond Shaw (Laurence Harvey) carries out Communist instructions to shoot fellow American PoWs. Working for Intelligence, Marco unravels a cunning Red plot to brainwash his old platoon and to turn Shaw into an assassin.

The 1977 interview of disgraced post-Watergate ex-President Nixon by British chat show host David Frost turned out to be one of the most explosive in American TV history. Here, Michael Sheen and Frank Langella reprise the roles they originally played on stage. Gripping and funny, the film is a verbal boxing match, the razor-sharp script filled with timely insights into the power of the media.

In association with The Scottish Parliament, The Manchurian Candidate will be introduced by leading politicians, who will also host a postscreening discussion about the themes in the film.

This superb biopic, with a transformative performance from Sean Penn, covers the final years of Harvey Milk’s life. James Stewart’s young Wisconsin senator, upholding true American values in a Senate House riddled with wrongdoing, is quintessential Capra. Turning your back on the system to keep your head high: an inspiring story of solidarity, hope and civil disobedience. Spain’s economic crisis in 2008 heralded a wave of unemployment and evictions. This documentary provides fascinating insight into a social movement that offers those left behind a chance to build a new sense of dignity: one born of defiance and mutual support.

In association with The University of Edinburgh, Filmhouse will present a varied programme of Shakespeare adaptations by some of the great filmmakers. Pushing across boundaries of language, genre and culture, the programme emphasises the diversity of approaches filmmakers have taken in responding to Shakespeare’s plays, going far beyond ‘conventional’ renditions of the text. The majority of screenings will be introduced by academics or other experts, thanks to a collaboration between The University of Edinburgh English and Film Studies departments. Dr David Sorfa, Film Studies, University of Edinburgh Sun 2 Oct at 4.00pm

With this celebrated adaptation, Laurence Olivier was the first person ever to direct himself to a Best Actor /Actress Oscar®. Olivier plays The Prince of Denmark opposite Eileen Herlie as his mother Gertrude. Greatly influenced by the pioneering camerawork of Gregg Toland (Citizen Kane), the striking monochrome adds greatly to this masterpiece. The film will be introduced by Dr Dermot Cavanagh, Senior Lecturer in English, The University of Edinburgh

1h10m • 12A

There are over four hundred film adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays and more appear every year. The bard does indeed seem to be for all times... In this lecture and discussion, David Sorfa will give an overview of the ways in which Shakespeare has been adapted for the screen with a particular emphasis on the films included in this season. We will try and identify exactly what draws cinema to Shakespeare and what this has to tell us about the way in which we thought 400 years ago and how we think now. £5

Throne of Blood

Kumonosu jo Tue 4 Oct at 6.00pm

Akira Kurosawa • Japan 1957 • 1h50m • 35mm • Japanese with English subtitles • PG - Contains infrequent moderate horror and violence • Cast: Toshiro Mifune, Isuzu Yamada, Takashi Shimura.

Considered by many the finest of all film versions of Shakespeare, this rendering of ‘The Scottish Play’ translates the story to medieval Japan. With Macbeth as the samurai Washizu (Toshiro Mifune), the adaptation deletes most of the minor characters and conceives a stunningly graphic fate for the usurper. The screening will be introduced by Dr Chris Perkins, Lecturer in Japanese at The University of Edinburgh.

To Be or Not To Be Wed 5 Oct at 6.00pm Ernst Lubitsch • USA 1942 • 1h39m • 16mm • English and German with English subtitles • U • Cast: Jack Benny, Carole Lombard.

Released two months after Carole Lombard lost her life in a plane crash, Ernst Lubitsch’s To Be or Not To Be is a quite astonishing anti-Nazi satire that sees a troupe of actors in occupied Warsaw use their abilities to deceive the invading force. Featuring references to Hamlet and The Merchant of Venice, our thespian protagonists, led by Joseph Tura (Jack Benny) and his wife Maria (Lombard), lead the Nazis a merry dance with various charades and escapes. The screening will be introduced by Dr Jonny Murray, Senior Lecturer in Visual Culture and Film at Edinburgh College of Art.

A Double Life

Romeo, Juliet & Darkness

Mon 17 Oct at 6.00pm

Sun 23 Oct at 6.10pm

George Cukor • USA 1947 • 1h44m • 35mm • English and Italian with English subtitles • PG • Cast: Ronald Colman, Signe Hasso, Edmond O’Brien, Shelley Winters.

Jiri Weiss • Czechoslovakia 1960 • 1h32m • 35mm • Czech with English subtitles • PG • Cast: Ivan Mistrík, Daniela Smutná.

Earning both an Oscar® and a Golden Globe for its star Ronald Colman, George Cukor’s A Double Life is the suitably dark and melodramatic tale of an impressionable actor - recently divorced from his co-star wife (Signe Hasso) - whose starring role in a hit production of Shakespeare’s Othello turns his mind to murder...

Pavel (Ivan Mistrík), a young student living in Prague in 1942, hides a Jewish girl (Daniela Smutná) in his building’s attic. Amidst the brutality of the occupying German army, love blossoms. When the two are discovered by his mother, she forces the residents of the building to decide whether Hana can remain. Kiss Me Kate (3D)

Thu 27 Oct at 8.30pm

Mon 31 Oct at 6.05pm (£2 extra charge for 3D)

Peter Greenaway • UK/Netherlands/France/Italy/Japan 1991 • 2h4m 35mm • 15 Cast: John Gielgud, Michael Clark, Michel Blanc.

George Sidney • USA 1953 • 1h49m • Digital • English, French and Italian with English subtitles • U • Cast: Kathryn Grayson, Howard Keel, Ann Miller, Keenan Wynn.

Prospero’s Books engages with Shakespeare’s The Tempest, not as theatre transposed to film but rather through the figure of Prospero (Sir John Gielgud) with issues of art and science, human intelligence and the powers of reason and unreason. The most striking aspect of the film has to do with role of “books”, covering the natural sciences, history, magic, painting, and calligraphy. The screening will be introduced by Dr Suzanne Trill, Senior Lecturer in English at The University of Edinburgh.

Makibefo Wed 2 Nov at 6.15pm Alexander Abela • UK/Madagascar/France 2001 • 1h13m • Digital Malagasy and English with English subtitles • cert tbc - Guideline cert 12A • Cast: Martin Zia, Neoliny Dety, Gilbert Laumord.

This unique adaptation of Macbeth was filmed in Faux Cap on the southern tip of Madagascar and acted (with a great deal of impressive improvisation) by Antandroy fishermen. Shot in high-contrast blackand-white, the austerity of dialogue (all in native Malagasy) gives way to striking visuals that tell the familiar story in a captivating new context. In association with Africa in Motion film festival.

A ‘50s MGM adaptation of the Broadway hit, shot in groundbreaking 3-D, Kiss Me Kate takes The Taming of the Shrew and places it front and centre as the setting for this entertaining tale. Two musical theatre actors - a divorced couple - are cast opposite each other in a major musical version of the Shakespeare play, which has come to the attention of local gangsters who arrive to collect a debt... Conflict, confusion and slapstick naturally ensues. The screening will be introduced by Dr Annette Davison, Senior Lecturer in Music.

A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy Mon 7 Nov at 8.50pm Woody Allen • USA 1982 • 1h28m • 35mm • 15 Cast: Woody Allen, Mia Farrow, Tony Roberts, Mary Steenburgen.

Inspired by Ingmar Bergman’s Smiles of a Summer Night as well as A Midsummer Night’s Dream, this 1982 ensemble comedy was described by Woody Allen as “a small intermezzo with a few laughs” . Set in the early 1900s at a weekend party attended by three couples, the tone is light as their emotional, intellectual and sexual entanglements play out. The screening will be introduced by Dr Andrew Taylor, Head of the Department of English at The University of Edinburgh.

Henry V

Forbidden Planet

Tue 8 Nov at 5.45pm

Mon 21 Nov at 6.00pm

Kenneth Branagh • UK 1989 • 2h17m • Digital • English and French with English subtitles • 12A • Cast: Kenneth Branagh, Derek Jacobi

Fred M Wilcox • USA 1956 • 1h38m • 35mm • U - Contains mild horror sequence Cast: Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis, Leslie Nielsen.

Directed by and starring Kenneth Branagh, Henry V is a gritty adaptation of Shakespeare’s epic and brutal play. The BAFTA and Academy Award® winning film is widely considered one of the best film adaptations of The Bard’s work, commended for the performances and direction as well as the accessibility of its Shakespearean language.

A US spaceship comes across a remote planet, deserted except for world-wearied Dr. Morbius (Water Pidgeon), his daughter (Anne Francis) and their robot Robby. Something has destroyed the other inhabitants, and now begins to pick on the crew... An iconic sci-fi flick, surprisingly but effectively based on The Tempest, with an ingenious script and special effects, Forbidden Planet also features a youthful Leslie Nielsen as Commander Adams.

The screening will be introduced by Dr Dermot Cavanagh, Senior Lecturer in English at The University of Edinburgh.

The screening will be introduced by Professor James Loxley, Professor of Early Modern Literature at The University of Edinburgh.

Chimes at Midnight Wed 23 Nov at 6.00pm Orson Welles • France/Spain/Switzerland 1965 • 1h53m • Digital • PG - Contains moderate violence • Cast: Orson Welles, Jeanne Moreau.

Falstaff was described by Orson Welles as “Shakespeare’s greatest creation”. Often directly compared to him, his connection to the character is perhaps one of the most organic in all of cinema. Sir John Falstaff is re-imagined and resplendent through Welles’ vision and performance in this portmanteau of five plays. The comedy and warmth remain but, inevitably, these give way to tragedy. The screening will be introduced by Dr Daniel Yacavone, Lecturer in Film Studies at The University of Edinburgh.
