FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT
H O M E O F T H E E D I NB U RG H I N T E R N AT I O N A L F I L M F E S T I VA L
Now I’ve mentioned this before… …but you, our audience (assuming that, if you are reading this, you watch films here too!), make me so happy and proud at times I feel it impossible to resist mentioning it again. That is, with what feels like increasing regularity and on a whole host of different new releases, you make us the best-attended cinema of our kind, in the UK, outside London. Sometimes, even including London. It’s remarkable. You are remarkable. And I say all this without a hint of the irony I might have been known to employ in this column… once or twice before. But let’s not any of us rest on our laurels… for even with our apparent, relative, venue/audience synergies, for us it’s still quite a job to make ends meet, and we’d love a whole lot more folks to join us on our endless quest for great cinema. It’s an unpredictable business selling a ‘product’ (a term I never like using to describe films) over which we have no control of quality and ultimate audience appeal (though obviously we can control what shows here!), and our commitment to you that we won’t deliberately try and lure you to spend your hard-earned on films we don’t believe worth the price of a ticket does limit our options – but we reckon you’d stop coming if we played fast and loose with that! If Dame Judi as Queen Victoria floats yer boat you’re in for a royal treat with Stephen Frears’ Victoria and Abdul; the story of the relationship between ‘Pooh’ author and son, A.A. and C.R. Milne, is a tale beautifully told in Goodbye Christopher Robin; and what with an almost entire JeanPierre Melville retrospective (in this his centenary year), Hungarian Berlinale Golden Bear-winner On Body and Soul and our annual Take One Action Film Festival, I feel confident in claiming there is something for everyone! In Bed with Victoria
Director Oliver Laxe was the protagonist of Ben Rivers’ The Sky Trembles and the Earth is Afraid and the Two Eyes Are Not Brothers (which screened here in 2016), in which he walks off the set of this very film and into a stark, surreal new story. The film he’s made here is similarly fascinating - a spare, meditative ‘western’ set in the stunning Atlas Mountains and infused with elements of Sufism, a mystical trend of Islam. Set between old and contemporary worlds, it hinges initially upon a caravan of travellers escorting a dying Sufi master to his home village. Among them, two rogues have other plans...

Matthew Heineman • USA 2017 • 1h30m • Digital • 18 - Contains strong images of real killings, dead bodies. • Documentary.
First seen in one of several unfruitful therapy sessions, the powerhouse blonde lawyer Victoria (Virginie Efira), soon finds herself at a friend’s wedding where the plot officially kicks in. She also crosses paths with Vincent (Melvil Poupaud), who’s engaged in a stormy relationship with Eve (Alice Daquet). This second feature from writer-director Justine Triet (Age of Panic) opened Critics’ Week in Cannes.
An astonishing film on the Syrian citizen journalists/ activists of Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently - a group they formed after ISIS occupied their home city in 2014. Risking their lives daily - both in Syria and in exile - these people are undercover, on the run and in constant danger; yet, their fight against their occupiers’ ideology continues through information battles over online clicks and views. City of Ghosts is directed by award-winning documentarian Matthew Heineman (Cartel Land), and truly puts a human face on a very real, very immediate conflict.

Kathryn Bigelow • USA 2017 • 2h23m • Digital • 15 - Contains strong threat, violence, language. • Cast: John Boyega, Will Poulter, Anthony Mackie, Algee Smith, Jacob Latimore, Hannah Murray, John Krasinski.
About as relevant and urgent as it’s possible to get, Philippe Van Leeuw’s claustrophobic and powerful film - which UK Premiered at Edinburgh International Film Festival - throws us amongst a middle-class family, barricaded inside their flat in the middle of Damascus. Whilst in the distance, war rages, nearby snipers lie in wait, and opportunistic men stalk the streets. As what’s going on outside makes its way inside, formidable matriarch Oum Yazan (Hiam Abbass) is the one charged with making the sorts of decisions no-one should ever have to make...
Her first film since 2012’s Zero Dark Thirty, Kathryn Bigelow collaborates for a third time with writer Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker) on this sweeping, powerful drama set amidst the Detroit riots of 1967. A shifting multi-character story starring John Boyega, Will Poulter and Anthony Mackie, Detroit opens with a heavy-handed police raid on an unlicensed bar setting in motion a city-wide wave of backlash and dissent. Across the city, a soul band find refuge from the rioting in the Algiers Motel, an impromptu party that has tragic consequences...

God’s Own Country Fri 15 to Thu 21 Sep Francis Lee • UK 2017 • 1h44m • Digital • 15 - Contains strong sex, language. • Cast: Josh O’Connor, Alec Secareanu, Gemma Jones, Ian Hart.
A wonderfully performed, unsentimental story of love and longing in the Yorkshire Pennines. Francis Lee’s debut feature had its UK Premiere (and won the Michael Powell Award) at EIFF, and is certainly one of the best British films of the year. Young Johnny (Josh O’Connor) works hard on the family farm, seeking solace and escape through drink and casual sex. This monotony is broken when Romanian worker Gheorghe (Alec Secareanu) arrives, and the strength of feeling between them comes to a head when they set off for the hills to repair a stone wall...

The Farthest Mon 2 to Wed 4 Oct Emer Reynolds • Ireland 2016 • 2h1m • Digital • PG - Contains infrequent mild bad language, natural nudity. • Documentary.
Emer Reynolds’ mesmerising documentary follows the amazing story of the Voyager 1 mission, the first man-made object to leave our solar system and head off into deep space. Through a series of warm and generous interviews with scientists involved in the mission, the story of Voyager 1, and remembrances of the Golden Record bearing recordings (notoriously including a Chuck Berry song) and images of life on Earth, the tale of this incredible achievement is detailed in a magnificent documentary that is nothing less than memorable.
The 29th Godzilla film produced by the legendary Toho production company (who made the original in 1954), Shin Godzilla was the highest-grossing live-action Japanese film of 2016. It’s a peaceful day in Tokyo when a strange fountain of water erupts in the bay, causing panic to spread among government officials. At first, tangled in a web of bureaucracy and political mire, they suspect only volcanic activity. But one young executive dares to wonder if it may be something different... something alive.

Ceyda Torun • Turkey/USA 2016 • 1h19m • Digital • Turkish with English subtitles • U - Contains infrequent very mild bad language. Documentary.
David Lowery reunites his lead pairing from 2013’s Ain’t Them Bodies Saints - Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck - for this exploration of legacy, loss and the human longing for meaning and connection. Recently deceased, a white-sheeted ghost (Affleck) returns to his suburban home to console his bereft wife (Mara), only to find that he has become unstuck in time, forced to passively watch his life and love drift away. Surreal, ecstatic and one of the most memorable films of the year, A Ghost Story will haunt you - in every sense.
Roaming Istanbul in their thousands, the feline cast in this enchanting documentary have no master, no fixed abode and, of course, no doubts about their importance to the people of the city. Some fend for themselves - scavenging around - while others rely on good-natured humans for shelter and sustenance. Director Ceyda Torun: “Cats have been a part of Istanbul for thousands of years, and so, everyone who grows up in Istanbul or lives in Istanbul has a story about a cat. Stories that are memorable; sometimes scary, sometimes spiritual, but always very personal.”

Hailed as one of the best Japanese films of the year, this enthralling, powerful animated historical drama is set in the 1930s and ‘40s in Hiroshima and Kure, Japan, roughly straddling the period before and after the atomic bomb struck Hiroshima. Belle de jour
Fri 1 to Mon 4 Sep
Fri 8 to Thu 14 Sep
James Ivory • UK/Japan/USA 1992 • 2h20m • Digital • English and German with English subtitles • PG - Contains mild sex references, infrequent mild violence. • Cast: Anthony Hopkins, Vanessa Redgrave, Helena Bonham Carter, Joseph Bennett, Emma Thompson.
Luis Buñuel • France/Italy 1967 • 1h40m • Digital • French with English subtitles • 18 - Contains strong sexual theme and fetish scenes Cast: Catherine Deneuve, Jean Sorel, Michel Piccoli, Geneviève Page.
This Merchant Ivory adaptation of E.M. Forster’s novel picked up three Academy Awards®, including one for Emma Thompson. Set in Edwardian England, Howards End involves the intersecting lives of three families - the aristocratic Wilcoxes; the bourgeois Schlegels; and the working class Basts. When the Wilcox country home - Howards End - is bequeathed to Margaret, the patriarchal Henry Wilcox’s (Anthony Hopkins) reaction will threaten to tear apart the Schlegel family as they try to both soften the Wilcoxes’ prejudices and help the Basts out of poverty.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind Tue 19 to Thu 21 Sep Steven Spielberg • USA 1977 • 2h17m • Digital • PG - Contains mild language and scary scenes. • Cast: Richard Dreyfuss, François Truffaut, Teri Garr, Melinda Dillon, Bob Balaban.
Screening here from a new restoration, Close Encounters takes the favoured dream of every UFO enthusiast (a government cover-up) and turns it into a majestic adventure. En route to investigate a blackout, Richard Dreyfuss has an ‘encounter’. Over the next few days, he’s haunted with visions of a strange conelike mountain. He’s not the only one either... With its sharp imagery, engaging story and one of the most memorable five-tone motifs in cinema, Spielberg’s sci-fi fable has aged remarkably well.
Luis Buñuel’s iconic film tells the story of Séverine (Catherine Deneuve), a beautiful, bored upper middle-class housewife in a loving but sexually frigid marriage, who acts out her fantasies by becoming a prostitute in a brothel. The film moves back and forth between current reality, flashback, and her fantasies, often leaving it to the viewer to determine which is which. Buñuel stays detached from the proceedings, non-judgmental, coolly unemotional, contrasting lush interiors and chic costuming by Yves Saint-Laurent with dark fantasies and the threat of violence...

The Asphalt Jungle Sun 17 Sep at 1.00pm & 8.35pm John Huston • USA 1950 • 1h52m • Digital • PG - Contains mild violence • Cast: Sterling Hayden, Louis Calhern, Jean Hagen, James Whitmore, Sam Jaffe, Marilyn Monroe.
A minor classic of film noir and one of the earliest heist capers, The Asphalt Jungle has spawned countless imitations, few of which even remotely approach the intelligence and detail of the original. The familiar tale of a jewel theft gone wrong is notable for its gritty procedural detail and an emphasis on the inner lives of small time crooks. It also features a brief but star-making appearance by a young Marilyn Monroe. Jean-Pierre Melville’s The Red Circle was directly inspired by The Asphalt Jungle. Sun 10 Sep at 6.00pm Werner Herzog • Canada/USA/France/Germany/UK 2010 • 1h35m Digital • English and German with English subtitles • U - Contains no material likely to offend or harm • Documentary.
Herzog explores the earliest known visions of mankind: the Chauvet-Pont-d’Arc cave art of southern France. Since their discovery access has been extremely restricted, and so Herzog and co are faced with a challenging, brief low-light shoot. Accompanied by Herzog’s distinctive voiceover though, their bobbing torch-beams perfectly illuminate these incredible images - the horses, lions and rhinoceroses almost surge off the cave wall. There is an additional £2 charge for 3D.

Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht Tue 31 Oct only Werner Herzog • West Germany/France 1979 • 1h47m • Digital German with English subtitles • 15 - Contains moderate horror and gore. • Cast: Klaus Kinski, Isabelle Adjani, Bruno Ganz, Roland Topor.
Herzog’s remake of what he considers to be the most visionary of all German films, FW Murnau’s Nosferatu. Held together by Klaus Kinski’s performance as the vampire, Nosferatu the Vampyre recreates several scenes from the classic while slightly altering some of the original’s thematic structures. In Murnau’s, the vampire is pure evil invading a small German community (Herzog feels it prefigured the rise of Nazism). Herzog’s is much more sympathetic - an outcast.

Dekalog Sat 16 Sep at 11.00am (Part 1) & Sun 17 Sep at 11.00am (Part 2) Krzysztof Kieślowski • West Germany/Poland 1989 • 5h9m (Part 1) + 5h11m (Part 2) • Digital • Polish with English subtitles. • 15
A fantastic opportunity to see Dekalog on the big screen, only at Filmhouse. Shot with nine different cinematographers, Krzysztof Kieślowski’s landmark series is an incredible feat of visual storytelling. Originally made for Polish TV, Dekalog focuses on the inhabitants of a housing scheme at the tail-end of Communist Poland, whose lives become subtly intertwined as they face emotional dilemmas that are at once deeply personal and universally human. Drawing from the Ten Commandments for thematic inspiration and an overarching structure, these stories grapple with complex moral and existential questions concerning life, death, love, hate, truth, and the passage of time. Each screening will include two 15 minute breaks.
Book for both Parts 1 + 2 for £25/£20 concession, or individual parts for £15/£12 concession.

Followed by a discussion with Jacob Engelberg and academic Maria Pramaggiore. BSL interpretation available for discussion.

The Book of Gabrielle
+ What (THE FUCK) is lesbian cinema? Sun 29 Oct at 2.30pm Lisa Gornick • UK 2017 • 3h (film 1h20m) • Digital • 15
A clever dramedy about an intimate yet platonic relationship that develops between a female graphic artist and an older male erotic novelist. Saul delights in Gabrielle’s description of past affairs and ongoing relationship with Olivia (Anna Koval), just as Gabrielle likes to explore masculinity through Saul. Does he help Gabrielle find her artistic voice or is Saul finding his? Does she need to break from his patriarchy in order to find herself? Preceded by a comedy show with projected drawing about who makes lesbian films, who they’re for, and ultimately what they’re about, explored in an off-the-cuff, irreverent way.

Double Bill: El Mariachi + Desperado Sun 24 Sep at 2.00pm 3h20m • 35mm • 18 • £12/£10
On Saturday 23 September, Filmhouse compete in the annual Edinburgh Chili Cook-Off (come on down, show your support!), and what better way to round off the weekend than with a 35mm double of Robert Rodriguez’s break-out hits on the Sunday? An enormously entertaining story of a travelling musician (Carlos Gallardo) who is mistaken for a gun-toting killer by a local drug lord, the ultra-low budget El Mariachi blew audiences away at Sundance 1993. Prior to its success, the U.S. studio had lined up Desperado as an English-language remake. Now, however, Rodriguez was free to make a sequel bolstered with the emerging talents of Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek. This pair of cult hits would form the first two parts of his Mexico Trilogy and put Rodriguez well and truly on the map. Double Bill: Loot + Entertaining Mr Sloane Sat 30 Sep at 2.00pm 3h30m • Digital • 15 • £12/£10
To celebrate the re-release of Stephen Frears’ Prick Up Your Ears (see August brochure) starring Gary Oldman as playwright Joe Orton - here we present a pair of his plays, both brought to screen in 1970. Loot is a wickedly funny farce about a pair of thieves - Hal and Dennis - who rob a bank and stash the cash in a coffin containing Hal’s late mother. Desperate to outwit the crooked police Inspector Truscott (Richard Attenborough, on top form), its comedy holds plenty of barbs for the church, social mores and society at large. Entertaining Mr Sloane was Orton’s break-out stage hit, and Douglas Hickox’s film was actually the second time it made it to screen (ITV produced a version in 1968). It received a mixture of critical praise and public outrage for its edgy plot in which a lodger (Sloane, played by Peter McEnery here) with a dark past invades the lives, and beds, of the dysfunctional family he’s living with, turning sibling against sibling... Far from the Madding Crowd Tue 12 Sep at 1.15pm Thomas Vinterberg • USA/UK 2015 • 1h59m • Digital • 12A - Contains moderate violence, sex references • Cast: Carey Mulligan, Juno Temple, Michael Sheen, Matthias Schoenaerts, Tom Sturridge.
A splendid recent adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s novel, directed by Thomas Vinterberg. Far from the Madding Crowd is the story of independent, beautiful and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan), who attracts three very different suitors: Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), a sheep farmer, captivated by her fetching wilfulness; Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge), a handsome and reckless Sergeant; and William Boldwood (Michael Sheen), a prosperous and mature bachelor. Wonderfully shot with great performances.
The Artist Tue 26 Sep at 1.15pm Michel Hazanavicius • France/Belgium 2011 • 1h40m • Digital • Silent PG - Contains scene of mild threat • Cast: Jean Dujardin, Bérénice Bejo, John Goodman, James Cromwell, Penelope Ann Miller.
The Artist is an honest-to-goodness black-and-white silent picture made by modern French filmmakers in Hollywood. Michel Hazanavicius’ playful love letter to the movies’ early days spins on a variation of an A Star Is Born-like relationship between a dashing Douglas Fairbanks-style star (Jean Dujardin), whose career wanes with the coming of synchronised sound, and a dazzling young actress (Bérénice Bejo), whose popularity skyrockets at the same time. The Artist won five Oscars® in 2012, including Best Picture.

Jean-Pierre Melville Dust off your fedora hats and trenchcoats for this season of films by one of France’s most iconic and influential directors - Jean-Pierre Melville. Born Jean-Pierre Grumbach in Paris in 1917, he adopted the nom de guerre “Melville” while working for the French Resistance in World War II - and kept it as his professional name when he returned from the war. He would go on to be a huge influence on the French New Wave and an array of notable filmmakers since - including Martin Scorsese, John Woo, Michael Mann and Quentin Tarantino. Amusez-vous!
TICKET OFFER (see page 19)
Bob le flambeur
Les Enfants Terribles Fri 1 to Sun 3 Sep Jean-Pierre Melville • France 1950 • 1h45m • 35mm • French and English with English subtitles • 12A • Cast: Nicole Stéphane, Edouard Dermithe, Renée Cosima, Jacques Bernard, Melvyn Martin.
Melville’s collaboration with Jean Cocteau on this adaptation of the latter’s novel is a claustrophobic, psychologically astute drama about a sister and brother retreating into an isolated world of erotically charged game-playing - a journey that stretches from a fateful childhood snowball fight into a strange, stunted young adulthood of tension and unspoken desires between friends and siblings. Despite disagreements with the author, it remains one of the finest of all Cocteau adaptations. The Sat 2 Sep screening at 6.15pm will be introduced by Dr Pasquale Iannone (University of Edinburgh).

Jean-Pierre Melville • France/Italy 1961 • 1h57m • Digital • French and English with English subtitles • PG - Contains mild sex references. Cast: Jean-Paul Belmondo, Emmanuelle Riva, Irène Tunc.
Obsessed with the American film noirs of the ‘40s, Jean-Pierre Melville spent the best part of his career recreating their world. But in Bob le flambeur, he went far beyond mere imitation - playing with the conventions of the genre masterfully. As the ageing, broke, and broken gambler, Bob is the archetypal noir hero. Yet as soon as he’s established, Melville shows us the soft underbelly of this hardboiled hero. The Tue 5 Sep screening at 6.00pm will be introduced by Dr Pasquale Iannone (University of Edinburgh).
Melville’s excursion into Robert Bresson territory, set in a French town during the German Occupation, boasts Jean-Paul Belmondo as the priest and Emmanuelle Riva as the faithless young woman. Melville uses the barest of material assets, but maximum emotional and metaphysical toughness, to persuade even the most sceptical of observers into acknowledging the Divine. The Wed 6 Sep screening at 6.05pm will be introduced by Dr Pasquale Iannone (University of Edinburgh).

Jean-Pierre Melville • France/Italy 1962 • 1h48m • Digital • French with English subtitles • 12A - Contains moderate violence. • Cast: Jean-Paul Belmondo, Serge Reggiani, Daniel Crohem, Jean Desailly.
Jean-Pierre Melville • France/Italy 1967 • 1h45m • 35mm • French with English subtitles • PG • Cast: Alain Delon, François Périer, Nathalie Delon, Cathy Rosier.
Melville’s second foray into the Parisian underworld borrows its epigraph from Céline: ‘One must choose: die... or lie?’ At the heart of this ambiguous world is Silien (Jean-Paul Belmondo), a professional informant, who juggles twin friendships with a police inspector (Daniel Crohem) and a burglar (Serge Reggiani). Just out of jail, Reggiani finds Crohem lurking in ambush when on his next job. Everything seems to point to Belmondo as the informer, until a rather different story is revealed...The Sat 9 Sep screening at 6.00pm will be introduced by Dr Pasquale Iannone.
The opening of Le samouraï offers the following text (from Bushido): “There is no greater solitude than that of the samurai unless it is that of the tiger in the jungle... Perhaps...” - a sentiment which truly encapsulates Alain Delon’s impassive, lone hitman Jef Costello. His meticulous methods of assassination and anonymity are thrown into jeopardy when - with multiple witnesses - a nightclub hit goes awry. The screening will be introduced by Dr Pasquale Iannone (University of Edinburgh).

Jean-Pierre Melville • France 1949 • 1h28m • Digital • French, German and English with English subtitles • U - Contains no material likely to offend or harm • Cast: Howard Vernon, Nicole Stéphane, Ami Aaröe.
Gu (Lino Ventura) is a vicious gangster who has just escaped jail. He needs one last job to finance leaving the country with Manouche (Christine Fabréga), but the police - led by steely Inspector Blot (Paul Meurisse) - have managed to convince his gang that he is an informer. Labelled a traitor, Gu finds his gang’s loyalty instantly evaporating, but Manouche reveals her nerves of steel and her determination to stand by her man, whatever the cost... The screening will be introduced by Dr Pasquale Iannone (University of Edinburgh).
Melville’s accomplished debut centres on a Francophile German officer (Howard Vernon) billeted with an elderly man and his daughter in a village outside Paris, who defiantly remain mute in his presence. Meanwhile, he delivers idealistic monologues about a marriage between Germany and France that will bring a new Europe... PLUS SHORT

Army of Shadows
L’armée des ombres Mon 25 to Wed 27 Sep
Jean-Pierre Melville • France/Italy 1969 • 2h25m • Digital • French, German and English with English subtitles • 15 • Cast: Lino Ventura, Paul Meurisse, Jean-Pierre Cassel, Simone Signoret.
Widely unseen and/or criticised at the time of its French release, Army of Shadows has been only been given its due acclaim in the past twenty years or so. Based on Joseph Kessel’s 1943 novel - it’s a compelling account of the lives of underground fighters against the Nazis. Resistance leader Gerbier (Lino Ventura) escapes internment and returns to Marseille, determined to find the traitor. And so begins a tale of intrigue and dignified valour... The Tue 26 Sep screening at 5.45pm will be introduced by Dr Pasquale Iannone (University of Edinburgh).

Le Cercle rouge
Wed 27 to Fri 29 Sep Jean-Pierre Melville • France/Italy 1970 • 2h20m • Digital • French with English subtitles • PG - Contains mild violence, nudity, language and drug reference. • Cast: Alain Delon, André Bourvil, Gian Maria Volonté, Yves Montand, François Périer.
Melville’s great achievement with this film is his relocation of the American gangster film to France, while incorporating his own poetic and philosophical obsessions. Darker and more abstract than his earlier work, The Red Circle shows the breakdown of the criminal ‘codes’ under which Melville’s characters had operated, as Corey (Alain Delon) navigates the underworld to plan a jewellery heist... The Wed 27 Sep screening at 8.20pm will be introduced by Dr Pasquale Iannone (University of Edinburgh).
Un Flic Fri 29 Sep to Sun 1 Oct Jean-Pierre Melville • France/Italy 1972 • 1h38m • Digital • French with English subtitles • 12A - Contains moderate violence. Cast: Alain Delon, Richard Crenna, Catherine Deneuve, Riccardo Cucciolla, Michael Conrad.
Opening with an unforgettable, atmospheric robbery scene, Melville’s final film is a potent cat-and-mouse tale of thieves, informants and Un Flic (a cop), played by the peerless Alain Delon. Tangled in a love triangle with his less-than-scrupulous acquaintance Simon (Richard Crenna) and the alluring Cathy (Catherine Deneuve), Delon’s police chief Coleman is drawn deeper and deeper into the Paris underworld - despite his duty to bring it down and bring a gang of armed robbers to justice. For all its ambiguities, one thing is clear - life in the shadows will end in tragedy. The Sat 30 Sep screening at 6.20pm will be introduced by Dr Pasquale Iannone (University of Edinburgh).

Waterworld Fri 8 Sep at 10.45pm Uncanny Valley is a place for dreams as well as nightmares. The hope here is to shine a lantern on the nocturnal neo-classics lurking in the shadows. The unsung heroes of grungy science-fiction, Lovecraftian terrors by modern horror masters, social commentary in the form of farce comedies and, most importantly, strange and uncanny tales that evade definition. Be it a journey into the darkest depths of the world we live in or whimsical flights of hysteria and cringe-worthy dilemmas, we hope to showcase the flicks of decades now adrift and ones best shown at night.
Kevin Reynolds • USA 1995 • 2h15m • 35mm • 12A - Contains moderate violence, threat and one use of strong language. • Cast: Kevin Costner, Dennis Hopper, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Tina Majorino.
Drawing inspiration from The Road Warrior (Mad Max), this sea-faring, sci-fi adventure breeds nothing but excitement, with remarkable special effects and action sequences that are as impressive today as they were upon its release (and, with a then-record spend of $175 million, you’d hope so...). The polar ice-caps have melted, survivors cling to floating cities. As Smokers, led by the barbarous Deacon (Dennis Hopper), attack a settlement in search of a child bearing a map to Dry Land, a solitary Mariner (Kevin Costner) is drawn into the fray...
As we head into the future with borrowed ideas and twisted dreams, we have our fiction to craft, and it’s about movies. Uncanny Valley screenings are fortnightly on Friday nights and cost £8/£6 concessions (£5 students).

But in this zany nineties comedy, Charlie is soon convinced that Harriet is in fact Mrs X: The Honeymoon Murderer - as reported in the tabloid of choice of his Scottish parents. Is this paranoid poet marrying the girl of his dreams or will the night of their honeymoon be Charlie’s last?

A year before Rocky Horror jumped the cinematic landscape to the left, Brian De Palma released this musical Gothic horror. Struggling composer Winslow (William Finley) falls in love with singer Phoenix (Jessica Harper) after his pop cantata is stolen by satanic producer Swan (Paul Williams) for the opening of the ultimate rock palace, The Paradise. Paul William’s outlandish score of doo-wop, surf, and rock overtures is central to this rarely seen cult classic. Does Winslow succeed in getting Phoenix to sing his music? Or does anyone else that tries die?
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Fri 3 Nov at 11.15pm Tobe Hooper • USA 1974 • 1h23m • Digital • 18 - Contains strong violence and horror. • Cast: Marilyn Burns, Gunnar Hansen, Allen Danziger, Edwin Neal, Paul A Partain, William Vail .
Tobe Hooper’s visceral, horror classic is disturbingly subtle and ultimately terrifying. On a road trip, Sally and Franklin Hardesty (Marilyn Burns, Paul A. Partain), along with three friends, find themselves caught in a web, awakening a darkness they can’t see right away, never mind believe. Are they merely cattle, trapped and destined for slaughter? The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is an assault on the senses as much as it is on the mind, and must be seen... to be believed.
Could you kill your best friend? That is the question that has been thrust onto Class B of Zentsuji Middle School in this violent Japanese cult hit. With youth delinquency on the rise, the Japanese government introduces the Battle Royale Act, which allows for a class, chosen at random, to be flown to a remote island against their will, issued with weapons and set loose to fight to the death. Only one can survive and the clock is ticking. Shackled to explosive collars, allegiances are strained and the students quickly form battle lines. 1 dead. 41 to go...

The ultimate in alien terror and body horror, with a pulsating, minimalist score from Ennio Morricone, John Carpenter’s 1982 sci-fi is a nail-biting chiller. After a mystifying incident in which two Norwegian scientists are killed, Antarctic helicopter pilot MacReady (Kurt Russell) is tasked with visiting their base. They find it destroyed, along with evidence of alien existence. Returning, they discover that an organism has integrated itself into their own facility. Able to mimic any lifeform, it hungers to absorb other forms of life - it could be any of them.

Lindsay Anderson Stephen Sutcliffe’s exhibition Sex Symbols in Sandwich Signs at Talbot Rice Gallery features a newly commissioned film portrait of director Lindsay Anderson. Partly based on his diaries (on display within the exhibition), ‘Casting Through and Scenes from Radcliffe’ offers a powerful insight into a tormented personal life that helps explain the vitriol behind films like If… Weaving Anderson’s accounts together with the fictional novel Radcliffe, it also presents the work of one of Anderson’s most frequent collaborators, the writer David Storey. Anderson’s cinematic adaptation of Storey’s This Sporting Life introduced Richard Harris to the big screen, and introduced Anderson to a person who would become the object for his homosexual fantasies and a profound source of frustration. These screenings celebrate the work of one of British Cinema’s most important directors, whilst links to Sutcliffe’s work and the University of Stirling’s Lindsay Anderson Archive provide a unique context from which to consider his personal and artistic achievements.
If.... Mon 11 Sep at 6.00pm Lindsay Anderson • UK 1968 • 1h51m • Digital • English and Latin with English subtitles • 15 - Contains strong violence. • Cast: Malcolm McDowell, David Wood, Richard Warwick, Christine Noonan.
A true British classic. Malcolm McDowell stars as Mick, a teenager who leads his classmates in a revolution against the stifling conformity of boarding school. Anderson captures the spirit of youthful rebellion, linking it with the sweeping political changes of the time through the photos of Mao, Che Guevara and Vietnam on Mick’s bedroom walls. Indeed, as the playground revolution kicks into gear, the film itself begins to disintegrate - switching between colour and sepia and the narrative becoming increasingly elliptical, as reality and fantasy merge.
Both screenings will be introduced by James Clegg (Curator, Talbot Rice Gallery). Sex Symbols in Sandwich Signs is on at Talbot Rice Gallery until Sat 30 September.
This Sporting Life Tue 12 Sep at 6.00pm Lindsay Anderson • UK 1963 • 2h14m • Digital • 12A - Contains moderate sex and violence • Cast: Richard Harris, Rachel Roberts, Alan Badel, William Hartnell, Colin Blakely.
Frank (Richard Harris), an aggressive Yorkshire coal miner, becomes a local celebrity as a professional rugby player. He yearns for the love of his landlady, Mrs Hammond (Rachel Roberts), a passionless widow, who eventually has a physical relationship with Frank but refuses any emotional involvement. David Storey adapted his own novel for Lindsay Anderson, who directs here with a rare power, aided by a truly careermaking performance from Harris.

Jeanne Moreau This month, we celebrate the life and career of the late Jeanne Moreau, who will forever be associated with some of the greatest European films of the 1950s and 1960s. Here are three of them.
TICKET OFFER (see page 19)
Lift to the Scaffold
Ascenseur pour l’Échafaud Sun 17 to Tue 19 Sep
Louis Malle • France 1958 • 1h29m • Digital • French with English subtitles • PG - Contains mild language and violence • Cast: Jeanne Moreau, Maurice Ronet, Georges Poujouly, Yori Bertin, Jean Wall.
In one of the seminal French films of the 1950s, a veteran of the Indo-China and Algerian Wars (Maurice Ronet) and his lover (Jeanne Moreau) plan the murder of her arms-manufacturer husband. But on his way from the crime scene he’s trapped in a lift. Inspired by Hitchcock and Bresson, Malle consciously puts his individual stamp on an adaptation of an ingenious but otherwise conventional roman noir. Miles Davis was persuaded to provide a superb score - improvised in a single night.
Jules et Jim
The Lovers
Wed 20 to Fri 22 Sep
Wed 27 & Thu 28 Sep
François Truffaut • France 1961 • 1h46m • Digital • French, German and English with English subtitles • PG - Contains mild language, sex references and brief drug reference • Cast: Jeanne Moreau, Oskar Werner, Henri Serre, Vanna Urbino, Boris Bassiak.
Louis Malle • France 1959 • 1h30m • 35mm • French with English subtitles • 15 - Contains moderate sex and nudity, and adultery theme. • Cast: Jeanne Moreau, Jean-Marc Bory, Judith Magre.
Truffaut’s truly iconic tale of a romantic triangle, set in Paris between the end of the Belle Époque and the beginning of the Second World War. Jules and Jim are young artists who enjoy a devoted friendship - until they meet Catherine (Jeanne Moreau), the epitome of la femme fatale. Both fall head over heels in love with her, but she - capricious, exuberant, independent and narcissistic - is impossible to possess, a fact Jules and Jim cannot accept. Elliptical, witty and radiant, Jules et Jim is one of the finest French films ever made.
Les amants
With Louis Malle’s follow-up to Lift to the Scaffold, Jeanne Moreau became a star once and for all. A deeply felt and luxuriously filmed fairy tale for grownups, perched on the edge between classical and New Wave cinemas, The Lovers presents Moreau as a restless bourgeois wife whose eye wanders from both her husband and her lover to an attractive passing stranger (Jean-Marc Bory). Thanks to its frank sexuality, it was heavily censored around the world. If today its shock has worn off, its glistening sensuality and seductive storytelling haven’t aged a day.

Kief Davidson, Pedro Kos • USA 2017 • 1h42m • Digital • English, Haitian, Spanish and Kinyarwanda with English subtitles • 12A Documentary.
Dylan Williams, Erik Pauser • Sweden/UK/Denmark 2016 • 1h18m Digital • English, German and Malaysian with English subtitles • 12A Documentary.
This inspiring film documents a quest for social justice that sparked a global health revolution. Committed to improving access to medicine in some of the poorest regions on the planet, a fledgling group of health advocates unexpectedly defeated tuberculosis in 1980s Haiti and Peru; formed an alliance with HIV/AIDS activists and challenged the World Health Organisation’s neo-colonial policies. Their community-based approach is celebrated in this stirring, emphatic rebuke to global inequality. In association with the Global Health Academy.
Ever wondered what links environmental destruction, land grabs, global finance, UK policy and political corruption in the global South? This gripping, often shocking film follows an unlikely group of activists as they overcome death threats and intimidation to expose both the global forces and local corruption behind the destruction of Malaysian Borneo’s rainforest. In association with the National Union of Journalists. Followed by Q&A with director Dylan Williams and protagonist Clare Rewcastle Brown.

Elina Hirvonen • Finland 2017 • 1h30m • Digital • Finnish with English subtitles • 15 • Documentary
A Damascus radio host and her friends capture the euphoria of Syria’s revolution - and their country’s descent into war. Armed with cameras and a newly-defiant idealism, Obaidah Zytoon’s friends all hoped for a better future for Syria when they took to the streets in early 2011. Her footage, shot over several years, provides an intimate and complex record of how this initial elation was crushed by violent repression and the rise of extremism. In association with National Union of Journalists. Followed by Q&A with director Andreas Dalsgaard and Gill Moreton (DART Center for Journalism and Trauma).
Anti-immigration rallies, accusations of faking the news... tempers have flared up in Finland. PLUS SHORT Hate for Sale Anna Eijsbouts • Netherlands 2017 • 3m Join us after the film as we consider our own relationship to the migration debate, with guests including Ewan Aitken (Cyrenians).

Four years in the intertwined lives of two determined Tunisian women as they seek to shape their country’s nascent democracy in the post-revolution years.
