Introduction

IRRATIONAL MAN

HOW TO CHANGE THE WORLD

TAKE ONE ACTION FILM FESTIVAL

STEAMBOAT BILL, JR.

Comedy and theatre? Pah, that’s so last month... Film’s the thing! A couple of months ago on these pages I had a bit of a go at film journos/reviewers about their annoying habit of writing positive reviews for ‘bad’ films (and vice versa), and the repercussions that has for us. I read it back recently and felt I’d been a bit mean. I even went as far as metaphorically beating myself up about it. But then I saw one or two of the UK reviews for Woody Allen’s new film Irrational Man (that opens here on 11 September) and all the irritation that drove me to write it in the first place came flooding back! I’m not going to point you in the direction of these reviews (telling you they exist is daft enough!), suffice to say if you let these reviews get in the way of you seeing the film, I think you’ll regret it. I greatly enjoyed this darkly humorous, “slinky, jazz-infused existential teaser”, and Joaquin Phoenix (in a role not of the kind the director would have played himself as a younger man) makes a great vessel for Woody’s words. One often finds there’s a divide between the US and UK film critical establishments (in the US they tend to be rather more tolerant of sentimentality, amongst other things), and woe betide the UK cinema programmer who puts too much store by positive reviews from across the Atlantic. In this case, hell mend me, I’m with the major US critics who have (rightly!) written in full praise of the film. Jeez… lighten up, you Brits! I’ve been watching a few of the films that will appear in the upcoming Take One Action Film Festival (check out takeoneaction.org.uk) and, boy oh boy, am I feeling righteously indignant about some of the injustice that’s happening in the world today. (I guess that’s exactly how the organisers of this marvellous festival want you to feel…) I say this with not a hint of sarcasm, for I think I may finally have come to the very obvious realisation that righteous indignation is, in itself, never likely to be enough, and perhaps I need to do as the fella says and Take One Action myself... As if to confirm September as the month for activism and social justice, How to Change the World reveals the fascinating story behind the founding, early years, arguments, fallings out, legal wranglings etc etc of Greenpeace; as well as Ramin Bahrani’s Michael Shannon and Andrew Garfield-starring 99 Homes, a dark tale set in the ruthless, stealing, scamming, world of real estate in the US and a young man’s moral disintegration within it. EIFF Michael Powell Award winner (for Best British Film) 45 Years, starring Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay as a couple about to celebrate the appropriate anniversary, hits our screens from the 11th; and Palio tells, beautifully, the full story behind the famously bonkers horse race that takes place in the main square of Siena in Tuscany twice a year, and the associated corruption and politicking that runs alongside it. There’s some great restorations as well: Antonioni’s seminal Monica Vitti and Alain Delon-starring L’eclisse; in beautiful widescreen monochrome, Richard Brooks’ 1967 adaptation of Truman Capote’s classic true crime novel, In Cold Blood; and Buster Keaton’s completely ace silent classic Steamboat Bill, Jr. [Sound of steam whistle, to fade…] Rod White, Head of Filmhouse

Noah Baumbach • USA 2015 • 1h26m • Digital 15 - Contains very strong language, strong sex references Cast: Lola Kirke, Greta Gerwig, Heather Lind, Joel Marsh Garland, Michael Chernus.

Michelangelo Antonioni • Italy/France 1962 • 2h3m • Digital Italian with English subtitles • PG - Contains moderate language Cast: Monica Vitti, Alain Delon, Francisco Rabal, Louis Seigner.

Matthew Heineman • Mexico/USA 2015 • 1h40m • Digital Spanish with English subtitles, several scenes of unsubtitled English • 15 - Contains images of real corpses, strong language, drug references Documentary

The second feature screenplay collaboration between director Noah Baumbach and partner Greta Gerwig, Mistress America is a companion comedy that plays out on the streets and suburbs of New York City. Tracy (Lola Kirke) is a college freshman - feeling lonely and detached from the university experience - who is brought under the wing of her adventurous soon-to-be stepsister Brooke (Greta Gerwig). Baumbach’s film is a stylish and energetic 86 minutes, with great sidecharacters, strong chemistry between the lead pairing and an abundance of quips.

Iris Showing from Fri 4 Sep Albert Maysles • USA 2014 • 1h20m • Digital 12A - Contains infrequent strong language Documentary featuring Iris Apfel, Carl Apfel, Billy Apfel, Harold Koda, Bruce Weber.

This penultimate film of the late, great documentarian Albert Maysles (Grey Gardens, Salesman) follows quick-witted, flamboyantly-dressed, 93-year-old style maven Iris Apfel. An outsized presence on the New York fashion scene for decades, Iris is a singular woman whose enthusiasm for fashion, art and people reminds us that clothing - like life - is nothing but an experiment. Despite the abundance of glamour in her current life, she continues to embrace the values and work ethic established during America’s Great Depression.

The conclusion of Michelangelo Antonioni’s informal trilogy on modern malaise (preceded by L’avventura and La notte) L’eclisse tells the story of a young woman (Monica Vitti) who leaves one lover (Francisco Rabal) only to drift into a relationship with another (Alain Delon). Using the architecture of Rome as a backdrop for the couple’s doomed affair, Antonioni reaches the apotheosis of his modernist style, returning to his favourite themes: alienation and the difficulty of finding connections in an increasingly mechanised world.

Matinee Special! If you’re a Senior Citizen you can go to a matinee screening and get either soup of the day OR a cup of tea or filter coffee and a traycake for only £8! A harrowing look at the journeys of two modern-day vigilante groups and their shared enemy: the murderous Mexican drug cartels. Director Matthew Heineman embeds himself with two vigilante groups as each vies to bring their own brand of justice to a society where institutions have failed. One small-town Mexican physician known as “El Doctor” leads a citizen uprising against a cartel that has wreaked havoc on the Michoacán region for years. Meanwhile, in Arizona’s “Cocaine Alley”, an American veteran heads a small paramilitary group whose goal is to stop Mexico’s drug wars from seeping across the border. All tickets purchased for Cartel Land between Fri 4 Sep and Thu 10 Sep will come with a free SuperTicket. Full details at cartellandmovie.co.uk/superticket

Justin Simien • USA 2014 • 1h48m • Digital 15 - Contains strong language, drug use, racial stereotyping Cast: Tessa Thompson, Tyler James Williams, Kyle Gallner, Teyonah Parris.

Richard Brooks • USA 1967 • 2h15m • Digital • 15 Cast: Robert Blake, Scott Wilson, John Forsythe, Paul Stewart.

Woody Allen • USA 2015 • 1h35m • Digital • 12A - Contains infrequent strong language, moderate sex references Cast: Joaquin Phoenix, Parker Posey, Emma Stone.

When a young, intelligent and outspoken woman of mixed race (Tessa Thompson) attends a prestigious, predominantly white school, the privileged order is shaken to its core. Justin Simien’s sharply written and assured satirical comedy-drama launches a broadside on racial privilege, interracial taboos and class divides in contemporary society and culture (with cinema itself, amusingly, a particular target).

45 Years Showing from Fri 11 Sep Andrew Haigh • UK 2015 • 1h35m • Digital 15 - Contains strong language, sex Cast: Charlotte Rampling, Tom Courtenay, Geraldine James, Dolly Wells, David Sibley.

Andrew Haigh’s subtly devastating 45 Years is a beautiful portrait of the fractured relationship of a couple delightfully played by Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay - as they head towards their 45th wedding anniversary party. A powerful and enthralling follow-up to Haigh’s critically acclaimed Weekend, the film (which won the Michael Powell Award for Best British Feature Film at the 2015 Edinburgh International Film Festival) dwells on how an apparently happy union can be tormented by an echo from the past, with a decades-long bond threatened by insecurities and irrational jealousy.

On 15 November 1959, ex-convicts Perry Smith and Dick Hickock entered a Midwest American farmhouse and brutally murdered an entire family, expecting to find their $10,000 savings hidden in a safe. But there was no safe - and no money. After attempting to evade police capture, they were given a sensational trial, documented and detailed in Truman Capote’s now-classic ‘nonfiction novel’, In Cold Blood. Released only a year after the book’s publication, Richard Brooks’ bold cinematic adaptation stayed true to the story’s immediacy, with filming taking place in authentic locations, including the site of the murder and the penitentiary where Smith and Hickock were later held. Featuring stark black-and-white cinematography from Conrad L Hall and a superbly expressive jazz score by Quincy Jones (both brilliantly served by a new digital restoration), In Cold Blood is a ripped-from-theheadlines horror story ripe for rediscovery.

Woody Allen’s 45th feature sees him returning from continental Europe to the leafy collegiate environs of Rhode Island. Here, writer and newly-appointed professor Abe (Joaquin Phoenix) is in the midst of grappling with a long-standing bout of ennui - unable to write, uninterested in life and unhappy in his competing relationships with colleague Rita (Parker Posey) and brilliant student Jill (Emma Stone). But, after overhearing a passing conversation at a restaurant, Abe finds himself drawn down an unexpected path, leading him towards philosophical crises, hidden dangers and late-night games of Russian roulette... Jerry Rothwell • Canada/UK 2015 • 1h50m • Digital 15 - Contains strong language, images of bloody real animal slaughter Documentary

Steamboat Bill thinks his business woes have been solved when he learns that his long-estranged son is returning home from college. But he’s sorely disappointed to find that Bill Jr (Buster Keaton) is not quite the hardy seafarer he expects him to be. And Bill Jr’s sudden affection for the daughter of Bill’s more successful rival isn’t helping matters one bit... One of the final films over which Keaton was to exert creative control, Steamboat Bill, Jr. is a disaster-struck romance featuring some of The Great Stone Face’s most notorious stunt work - including one particular falling house!

Set in 1992, during the growing conflict between Georgia and Abkhazian separatists in the wake of the Soviet Union’s dissolution, this compassionate story focuses on two Estonian immigrant farmers who decide to remain in Georgia long enough to harvest their tangerine crop. When the fighting arrives at their doorsteps, Ivo (played by legendary Estonian actor Lembit Ulfsak) along with friend Margus (Elmo Nüganen), treat two wounded soldiers from opposite sides. A beautifully eloquent statement for peace and the futility of bloodshed over racial and ethnic division.

This rousing documentary chronicles the adventures of the eclectic group of Canadian hippie journalists, photographers, musicians, scientists and American draft dodgers who set out to stop Alaskan atomic bomb tests in 1971 and ended up founding Greenpeace International. They agreed that a handful of people could change the world - they just couldn’t always agree on how to do it.

Buster Keaton & Eddie Cline • USA 1921 • 20m

Crystal Moselle • USA 2015 • 1h30m • Digital 15 - Contains strong language • Documentary

In this astonishing documentary, the filmmakers are granted access to the Angulo family, a reclusive clan of six brothers living with their parents and sister in a New York apartment. Rarely leaving the house (in one year none of them crossed the threshold), the homeschooled brothers pass the time re-enacting Hollywood movies from their extensive DVD collection. Deeply unsettling yet utterly compelling, this amazing study of a very unusual family asks as many questions as it manages to answer.

Palio Showing from Fri 25 Sep Cosima Spender • UK/Italy 2015 • 1h32m • Digital • Italian with English subtitles • 12A - Contains moderate violence, injury detail, sex references • Documentary

Twice a year, the Italian city of Siena hosts the oldest horse race in the world: the Palio, in which strategy, bribery and corruption play as much a part in winning as the skill of the riders. Cosima Spender’s documentary takes an intense look at a world in which horses are allocated by lot, and jockeys openly make deals promising large cash sums to try and secure the best start. Central to her story is the deep-seated rivalry between Gigi Bruschelli, who has won 13 Palios in 16 years, and his former trainee, Giovanni Atzeni, who is less interested in bribes and collusion, riding for the love of the race. Their passionate and dramatic battle underpins this epic microcosm of Italian life.

Jan Hrebejk directs this gripping drama about a rich society wedding thrown into chaos by the arrival of a stranger with a horrifying accusation to make - one which implicates the groom in a violent incident from the past. Beautifully acted by an expansive cast, and shot with the elegance and clarity of a Robert Altman classic, the film recalls Dogme 95 masterpiece Festen in its exploration of privilege, corruption and the horrible repercussions of suppressing ugly secrets. At once acidly funny and painfully moving, Honeymoon makes for compulsive viewing.

Elements of Change

War Redefined, the capstone of the five-part Women, War & Peace series, challenges the conventional wisdom that war and peace are men’s domain, through incisive interviews with leading thinkers, politicians and seasoned survivors of war and peacemaking. Interviewees include Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Liberian peace activist Leymah Gbowee, Bosnian war crimes investigator Fadila Memisevic and globalisation expert Moisés Naím.

Leona Goldstein • Germany/Rwanda 2014 • 1h23m Unsubtitled English and French with English subtitles • 15 Documentary featuring Godelieve Mukasarasi, Florida Mukarubuga.

The annual Beyond Borders Film Festival exhibits documentary-style films about individuals and communities caught in conflict and change, to shed light on themes often overlooked by mainstream media. The 2015 Beyond Borders Film Festival explores some of the most crucial and immediate changes happening in the modern world, with a special focus on women and conflict, the changes brought by modern warfare, and the changes experienced by those at the epicentre of conflict. WOMEN: AGENTS OF CHANGE

Burden of Peace Sat 5 Sep at 4.05pm

Joey Boink & Sander Wirken • Guatemala/Netherlands 2015 1h17m • Spanish with English subtitles • 12A Documentary

Burden of Peace tells the impressive story of Claudia Paz y Paz, the first woman to lead the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Guatemala. The country, ravaged for years by a devastating civil war in which nearly 200,000 Mayan Indians were systematically massacred, is today one of the most violent in the world. As Paz begins an attack against corruption and drug gangs, she does something everyone had hitherto thought impossible: she arrests former dictator Efraín Rios Montt on charges of genocide, leading to the firstever conviction of a former head of state for genocide in a national court.

God Is Not Working on Sunday!

God Is Not Working on Sunday! reveals the reality of today’s Rwanda, a country still coping with the consequences of genocide. Twenty years on, it is considered one of the most economically successful countries on the African continent. And, in particular, the emancipation of women has moved the country forward. But the trauma of war still persists in the minds of many women. Director Leona Goldstein follows the work of activists Godelieve and Florida as, together, they help women overcome difficult memories of the past and the burdens of their present lives, and encourage women to speak out, fight for their rights and support each other.

Tue 8 Sep at 5.45pm

Tue 10 Nov at 6.15pm

This fifth season of Filmsophy will focus on the theme of ‘regeneration’ and is offered in association with the MRC Centre for Regenerative Medicine - a world-leading research centre studying stem cells, disease and tissue repair to advance human health. The films screened will allow an opportunity to discuss the Centre’s groundbreaking research. We will seek to distinguish between science fiction and science fact, and to gain a valuable insight into the lives of those touched by the diseases and injuries that regenerative medicine aims to treat.

Mark Romanek • UK/USA 2010 • 1h44m • Digital 12A - Contains moderate sex and nudity Cast: Carey Mulligan, Andrew Garfield, Keira Knightley, Charlotte Rampling, Sally Hawkins.

Darren Aronofsky • USA/Canada 2006 • 1h35m • 35mm 15 - Contains one use of strong language and some moderate violence Cast: Hugh Jackman, Rachel Weisz, Ellen Burstyn.

Based on Kazuo Ishiguro’s acclaimed best-selling novel, Never Let Me Go is a haunting story of love and loss. Kathy (Carey Mulligan), a young woman in her early thirties, recalls her childhood years growing up with her friends Ruth and Tommy at Hailsham, an idyllic-seeming English boarding school. The Hailsham regime taught its pupils to believe they were special, encouraging creativity, sporting activity and a healthy lifestyle, reinforced by regular medical checks. The children were sheltered from the outside world, and afraid of what lay beyond the school gates, though this had little impact on their day-to-day happiness. But as they grew older, they learned that a dark secret hung over their future.

Three intertwining stories about men - from past, present and future - pursuing eternity with their love is the central premise of Darren Aronofsky’s third feature film. In a deeply personal and ambitious project, Aronofsky explores love, death and grief through the stories of Tomás, Tom and Tommy (Hugh Jackman), with layered subtleties that complement the often vivid and ornate visuals. Garnering a reputation as rather divisive among critics, this is a grandiose, sincere and unquestionably original piece of cinema.

I Am Breathing

Pedro Almodóvar • Spain 2011 • 2h • Digital • Spanish with English subtitles • 15 - Contains strong sex, sexual violence, brief gore & very strong language Cast: Antonio Banderas, Elena Anaya, Blanca Suárez

Films will be preceded by short introductions and followed by a range of post-screening events featuring scientists from the Centre and other invited speakers. The screenings will be introduced and discussion sessions hosted by James Mooney, Short Courses lecturer and course organiser at The University of Edinburgh. Tue 13 Oct at 5.45pm Emma Davie & Morag McKinnon • UK/Denmark 2012 • 1h12m Digital • 15 Documentary

When Neil Platt is diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease at the age of 33, he makes the unusual decision to document his final months, not just in a blog (which he painstakingly dictates via frustratingly inaccurate speech recognition software) but by inviting a film crew into the home he shares with his tireless wife Louise and toddler son Oscar. The result is a heartbreaking, funny and tender portrayal of incredible fortitude and love.

The Skin I Live In La piel que habito Tue 8 Dec at 6.00pm

Brilliant Toledo plastic surgeon Robert Ledgard is obsessed with his latest revolutionary human skin treatment. Not exactly shy of breaking a few ethical rules here and there, he’s also got a laboratory in his basement.... and a beautiful woman in a flesh-coloured unitard he keeps imprisoned in a room upstairs... Suffice to say, Thierry Jonquet’s source novel, ‘Mygale’, gives the world’s favourite Spanish auteur ample opportunity to explore his customary themes and stylings, albeit in a genre he’s perhaps not readily associated with.

“Concise, engrossing, infuriating.” - Variety “Masterful.” - Libération In this smart, eye-opening and incendiary documentary, Harold Crooks (co-writer of The Corporation and codirector of Surviving Progress) examines the UK and global financial system. He argues that the inheritance of generations of entrepreneurs and workers has been appropriated by a tiny elite whose sole purpose is to artificially increase it - separate to any social utility or adequate taxation - at the expense of the world. Centred on the City of London and its offshore tax havens, the film blows the lid off the idea that big finance makes the world go round, with leading economists as well as defectors from the world of big finance creating a compelling, coherent and forceful call for action.

“Vibrant and eye-opening.” - The Hollywood Reporter In this beautiful, spirited and challenging art-doc, director Petter Ringbom charts the interventions of a whole new generation of black and white South African activist-artists tackling issues of race, human rights and equality through music, photography and dialogue. Brett Murray’s painted caricature of South African president Jacob Zuma results in a lawsuit and death threats. Photographer Zanele Muholi’s work exposes hate crimes in the LGBT community. The Smarteez design collective champions freedom of expression. And musician Xander Ferreira challenges racism through boundary-crossing lyrics and performance.

THE SHORE BREAK

The Shore Break UK Premiere

Fri 18 Sep at 5.45pm Ryley Grunenwald • South Africa 2014 • 1h30m • Digital • English and isiMpondo with English subtitles • 12A Documentary

In a close-knit community in South Africa, two cousins take sides against each other in a story which beautifully and steadily spotlights corruption, the nature of “development”, international land-grabbing and our own consumer dependencies in the West. Stunningly shot in Ryley Grunenwald’s IDFA awardwinning film, the Wild Coast Region is one of the most underdeveloped areas in South Africa. Here the Pondo people retained a traditional way of life and agriculture - that is, until the arrival of TEM, an Australian company with plans to mine titanium, a key mineral in mobile phones and computers. Wary of the erosion of community-led development, local tour guide Nonhle is against the mine and co-ordinates widespread resistance to it. But her cousin Madiba, representing an array of outside interests, believes economic prosperity will derive from the mine - at least for him and his allies. But which way will the shore break?

PLUS SHORT A Sense of Place Max Smith • UK 2013 • 3m We look forward to welcoming director Ryley Grunenwald and writer and lands rights campaigner Andy Wightman to explore the film further and provide opportunities for audiences to connect and respond together.

Greg Barker • USA 2014 • 1h32m • Digital • English and Arabic with English subtitles • 15 - Contains strong real violence, sight of dead bodies and injuries Documentary

Sat 19 Sep at 3.15pm

“A heartfelt portrait of courage.” - The Guardian “Gathers in complexity, insight and moral force with each story.” - Total Film The most powerful, shocking and ultimately inspiring film to come out of the Arab Spring so far, Sundance veteran Greg Barker’s We Are the Giant takes its audience inside the lives of six extraordinary people. From Libya to Bahrain, they grapple with the agonising and universal dilemmas at the heart of all struggles for justice and freedom: whether to take up arms and fight, or to advocate change through peace and non-violence. Filmed largely in secret (sometimes at great risk) and woven together by wonderful animated segments which call up connections between the past and present, the film is witness to the very different, painful choices that come to define the protagonists and their nations.

When a Greenpeace ship set sail to protest against dangerous global climate change at the first oil drilling site in the Arctic Ocean, no one on board could have known what was coming. Seized at gunpoint and detained as pirates, the fate of the ‘Arctic 30’ sparked a bitter international dispute. This powerful documentary captures up close from start to finish the extraordinary events that made global headlines in 2013.

PLUS SHORT Aliah Valentino Bedini • Italy 2012 • 5m Presented in association with Amnesty International. We are delighted to welcome protagonist and award-winning Bahraini human right activist Maryam al-Khawaja.

SHORT FILMS SPECIAL The screening will open with 30 minutes of the best new international short films about humanity and the environment. Full details available via the Take One Action Film Festival brochure and website. Starting on Friday 25 September, Filmhouse are screening Jerry Rothwell’s documentary about the founders of Greenpeace, How to Change the World. (See page 7)

Addressing topics such as the search for identity and self-determination, enforced heterosexualisation and the struggle for acceptance, their subjects have one thing in common: they all describe the need for love, and their fear of fulfilling this love openly. Time and again, their fears prompt the question: is it better to hide away, resign oneself to the situation and leave the country, or stay and fight openly for diversity? The members of The NEST have opted for the latter and are determined to continue their struggle for recognition. Screening preceded by Take One Action’s inaugural Campaign Short Film Awards: celebrating the very best in film media spurring grassroots social action. Presented in association with Africa in Motion. Stay with us after the film for conversations with Sunny Dolat (stylist, production designer and cofounder of The NEST) and Zara Kitson (LGBT Youth Scotland). “An inspiring story of personal courage.” - The Hollywood Reporter Based on real-life events, this moving Pakistan-set thriller from Academy Award-winning director Danis Tanovic (No Man’s Land) charts a young salesman’s journey from excited newbie to shocked whistleblower. Ayan can barely believe his luck when he is recruited to work for Lasta, a multinational pharmaceutical company selling infant formula. It’s not long before his natural charm and knack for glad-handing make him into a minor star, and Lasta expand his responsibilities. However, one day he is devastated to see firsthand what the selling of baby formula really means in certain cases. Shocked, Ayan sets out to challenge the system and the powers that be.

“An intriguing, quietly inspirational story of one man’s struggle against politics” - The Hollywood Reporter Violence is part of everyday life in Colombia, where the military, guerrillas, paramilitaries, and drug cartels have been fighting for decades, and hundreds of thousands of people have been killed. But unorthodox presidential candidate Antanas Mockus and his enthusiastic supporters attempt to reverse the vicious cycle with an imaginative and positive election campaign. As mayor of Bogotá, dressed in a Superman costume and with an indomitable trust in the good of his fellow citizens, he took on towering crime rates and people’s bad traffic habits. But his idealism is both his strength and his weakness in an aggressive political system in which he struggles to restore people’s faith in being able to make a difference. Can good ideas and an idealistic drive alone change a political culture where violence is rampant? This is the portrait of an inspiring man and a powerful youth movement, whose stories are relevant far beyond Colombia’s borders. Presented in association with Unison Scotland Stay with us after the film for inspiring conversations and opportunities for creative, effective personal action.

“Should be seen by everyone who lifts fork to mouth three times a day.” - Film Journal In a story whose after-taste is global, producers Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation) and Eva Longoria (actress and Cesar Chavez Legacy award winner) chart the inspirational fight by migrant US farmworkers to bring supermarket giants to the table over fair wages. Supermarkets have tremendous power over the agricultural system, reaping $4 trillion globally every year. Yet countless farmworkers in the EU and US continue to live in poverty and are forced to work in subhuman conditions. Focusing on an intrepid group of tomato pickers, this is a powerful story of justice trumping greed.

One World Media Award: Women’s Rights in Africa In Morocco, a country where over 60% of women have never been to school, a new generation of women have started work as official Muslim leaders. They are called Morchidat or spiritual guides. The profound story of a quiet social revolution in Morocco, Casablanca Calling follows three Morchidat - Hannane, Bouchra and Karima - as they set out to change their country, starting at street level. Their mission is to teach an Islam based on compassion, tolerance and equality, and to separate its original teachings from prejudice, misinterpretation and misunderstanding. Their work takes them into mosques, schools, homes, orphanages, prisons and out in the countryside. They support the education of women and girls, campaign against early marriage and encourage young people to build a better Morocco rather than dreaming of life in the West. An intimate portrait of three female leaders, a society in transition, and a mission to educate a nation.

“Endearing...unexpectedly humorous.” - The Hollywood Reporter “The intelligence as well as the charm of The Wanted 18 lies in how it balances the farcical nature of labelling cows a national menace with the seriousness of purpose behind the community’s bid for dignity and autonomy under occupation.” - Variety During the First Palestinian Intifada - the unarmed civilian insurgency that included protests, stone throwing, civil disobedience and refusal to pay taxes to Israel - a group of townspeople in the West Bank town of Beit Sahour decide to buy eighteen cows and produce their own milk. Seeking to create an alternative economy as a stepping stone towards self-sufficiency and sovereignty, their venture proves so successful that the collective farm becomes a landmark. Even the cows become local celebrities - until the Israeli army takes note and declares that the cows pose “a threat to the national security of the state of Israel”. Through interviews and playful animation, The Wanted 18 charts a stirring portrait of a community united in defiance. Presented in association with Scottish Palestinian Forum.

A moving and urgent account of how inequality impacts our societies, inspired by best-seller The Spirit Level. As Britain today faces yet another round of harsh austerity measures while rising wealth is concentrated in ever fewer hands, what is the true cost of inequality? Director Katharine Round presents moving, personal stories from across the income spectrum. From the carer on a zero-hour contract to the ambitious Wall Street psychologist who aspires to the affluent lifestyle of the burnt-out traders he supports, The Divide successfully articulates how the rising gap between rich and poor negatively impacts people from the bottom to the top of society.

Winner: Best Documentary Feature, Tribeca Film Festival “Even the slyest political satire couldn’t outdo this riveting doc.” - Variety This gripping political thriller offers an incisive wartsand-all snapshot of a nascent democracy. Shot over three years, with remarkable access to the corridors of power in Robert Mugabe’s Zimbabwe, Democrats focuses on two political opponents tasked with drafting a new constitution. Mangwana, a blustery cynic unashamedly buoyed by the might of ruling party ZANU-PF, stands in stark contrast to the cautious Mwonzora, from the barely tolerated Movement for Democratic Change. Director Camilla Nielsson charts the two men’s complex relationship as they travel throughout the country during a nationwide consultation process marred from the outset by corruption and intimidation. Yet as meetings descend into violent clashes and Mwonzora faces imprisonment, Democrats captures unmistakable progress towards more democratic rule - and serves as a vivid illustration of our common struggle for dignity.

A testament to the transformative power of music and the resilience of the human spirit. The inspiring true story of The Recycled Orchestra of Cateura, a youth music group from the slums of Paraguay. Their choice of instrument - recycled garbage - blazes with hope in the face of inequality and environmental injustice. More than 60% of Paraguayans live in poverty, and in the slums of Cateura, young people have fewer chances than most. Enter Favio Chavez, a musician and teacher who sees boundless opportunity where others see garbage. Working hand-in-hand with local garbage pickers, children and parents, the orchestra is soon catapulted into the global spotlight. But when a natural disaster strikes their country, Favio must find a way to keep the orchestra intact and maintain a source of hope for their town.

Scottish Queer International Film Festival (SQIFF) has handpicked a selection of the best short films from our Festival, all addressing the theme of uncertainty and/ or defiance in presenting different versions of our queer selves. Amongst other weird and wonderful tales, a trans man buys a blow-up version of himself from the supermarket, a woman shaves her head to look like a balding guy, a queer man in Uganda faces his image of himself in response to violent discrimination, a gay couple deal with the difficulties of showing their affection in public, and a young woman explores her illicit sexual desires for the first time. We will be joined by several of the filmmakers after the screening for a Q&A. All films in the programme will screen with English subtitles to make this event more accessible for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

SQIFF takes place 24th to 27th September at the Centre for Contemporary Arts and other venues in Glasgow. For more details, go to www.sqiff.org

These senior citizens may each be almost a century young, but for Kara, (94) Maynie, (95) and Terri, (93) the journey to Las Vegas and the World Hip Hop Dance Championships is just the beginning of a life’s journey. Along with twenty-four other nonagenarians they defy the odds and hip-hop their way into the hearts and minds of thousands of young fans from around the world, pushing their bodies and artificial joints to the absolute limits of old age. Along the way we hear how these extraordinary characters contributed to New Zealand as we know it. Their stories are a reminder of their history as a nation and the joy of living life to the fullest.

Michelangelo Antonioni’s provocative look into the world of mod fashion, and an engaging murder mystery that examines the existential nature of reality through photography. Thomas (David Hemmings), a nihilistic London fashion photographer based in part on David Bailey (who is said to have been approached to play the role himself), lives a life of excess in newly-Swinging London. Becoming bored with his lucrative career, he one day takes candid photos of a rendezvous between a woman (Vanessa Redgrave) and a middle-aged man. She pursues him to ask for the illicit photos, and he imagines that he has witnessed a scene of sexual intrigue - never thinking that he may have accidentally obtained visual evidence of a murder... Come and See.../The Guns of Loos/Roger Waters The Wall

TREMORS

Come and See... A monthly one-off screening of a great film we simply thought you might like to see, again or for the first time, on the big screen.

Tremors Sun 20 Sep at 8.30pm Ron Underwood • USA 1990 • 1h36m • Digital • 12A - Contains moderate threat, gore, infrequent strong language Cast: Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, Finn Carter, Michael Gross, Reba McEntire.

An affectionate tribute to 1950s B movies, this cult classic sees the small town of Perfection, Nevada, come under attack from giant underground worms, with reluctant local handymen Val (Kevin Bacon) and Earl (Fred Ward) attempting to save its residents from gruesome deaths. Despite under-performing at the box office on release, Tremors became a hit on VHS and spawned multiple sequels. Combining horror with a hefty dose of humour, Tremors is the last great Hollywood monster movie to rely heavily on practical creature effects rather than CGI. Director Ron Underwood will take part in a live postscreening Skype Q&A. This 25th anniversary screening will be introduced by local author Jonathan Melville, whose new book, Seeking Perfection: The Unofficial Guide to Tremors, is the first on the franchise. Copies will be available to buy on the night.

The Guns of Loos marked a bold new approach to depicting the war on screen. The striking recreations of the conflict at Loos provide the backdrop to an intense psychological drama about a factory owner faced with the horrors of returning from the war. Combining strong performances with outstanding cinematography, the film received rave reviews on its release in 1928, with many critics declaring it the best war film ever made. Soon forgotten during the emergence of the ‘talkies’, this commemorative screening is a very exciting opportunity to see a truly unique film brought back to the big screen. The event is made even more special by the accompaniment of a brand new musical score by one of the UK’s leading silent film composers and performers, Stephen Horne, which has been commissioned by DCA in association with the Great War Dundee partnership. Tickets £10/£8

Roger Waters, co-founder and primary songwriter of Pink Floyd, fuses the epic and the personal in Roger Waters The Wall, a concert film that goes well beyond the stage. Based on the groundbreaking concept album, Roger Waters The Wall could be called a concept film: it’s a state-of-the-art show that dazzles the senses, combined with an intensely personal road trip that deals with the loss Roger has felt throughout his life due to war. After the film we will present The Simple Facts, a unique opportunity to see Roger Waters and his Pink Floyd bandmate Nick Mason - reunited, unscripted and in conversation, answering questions submitted by fans from around the world. Tickets £12/£10
