BRIDGE OF SPIES

THE MARTIAN

THE BLACK PANTHERS: VANGUARD OF THE REVOLUTION

LISTEN TO ME MARLON

Scotland Loves… As I write this we’ve just had our annual Scotland Loves Anime weekend, and true to expectation had one of our busiest weekends on record. When we held the inaugural SLA back in 2010 and decided to name it Scotland Loves Anime, we really didn’t know whether Scotland really did love anime or not, but having taken that (albeit informed) leap of faith, I reckon we’ve proved beyond any reasonable doubt that it does. So... the name can be seen as some sort of self-fulfilling prophecy, and I’ve been thinking about perhaps adopting such nomenclature across the board to build up the audiences for other things we do. Scotland Loves French Cinema, or Scotland Loves German Cinema (to name but two national cinemas being showcased this month) or, even, Scotland Loves Hardcore Portuguese Art House Cinema (there is one in this programme) but I’d be stretching credibility there, perhaps. If there is a downside to hosting a ‘festival’ that sells out every show over the weekend, it’s that it necessitates the use of our biggest screen to the exclusion of all other films, and this time around Suffragette, a film doing numbers that would warrant our biggest screen, had to be relegated to a smaller one. Apologies to all who were turned away, but it really is essential to us that we can maximise our income by putting each film into the screen best suited to the likely scale of its audience. (Indeed, if you ever come along to see a film expecting a different screen than the one it’s in, this is nearly always the reason why we have moved it.) We obviously have to set the dates of such a thing (SLA) quite far in advance and so are at the mercy of the film release schedules as to what else lands on that weekend. It was looking good for a while with the aforementioned Suffragette set for the 30th of October until Sony set SPECTRE for release on the 26th and Suffragette’s distributor felt the understandable need to not go into direct competition with it and moved it to the 12th very late in the day. So it goes. Looking to put pressure on our Screen One this month is Dame Maggie in The Lady in the Van, Nicholas Hytner’s film of Alan Bennett’s play, adapted by the author and based on an incident in his own life, when, as the title and star might suggest, an elderly lady in a van took residence in his London street... Funny, poignant and hugely enjoyable. Brooklyn tells, in classical style, the tender, bittersweet and ultimately very moving tale of a young Irish girl (played by Saoirse Ronan) who ups sticks to New York in the 50s, based on the bestselling novel by Colm Tóibin. Toward the end of the month comes Steven Spielberg’s deeply satisfying, Coen brothers-scripted biographical Cold War espionage thriller Bridge of Spies, which stars Tom Hanks as a noble New York lawyer hired to defend a supposed Soviet agent, played by our very own top thesp, Wolf Hall’s Mark Rylance. On top of the national seasons mentioned above we’ve an [almost] week of Greek Cinema, Ridley Scott’s hugely enjoyable The Martian, Iranian state-banned filmmaker Jafar Panahi’s impish and outraged Taxi Teheran, and a couple of ace documentaries: The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution which tells the history of the revolutionary black nationalist movement founded in the 1960s; and Listen to Me Marlon, which chronicles the life of the man (Brando, that is) through the hundreds of hours of the great man’s self-help tapes. Terence Davies • UK/Luxembourg 2015 • 2h15m • Digital • cert tbc Cast: Agyness Deyn, Peter Mullan, Kevin Guthrie, Jack Greenlees,.

A lyrical and lovely film version of Under Milk Wood, which despite originating as a ‘play for voices’ lends itself wonderfully to the visual arts. Starring Rhys Ifans and Charlotte Church, the film is directed elegantly by Kevin Allen. A Welsh language version has been shown, but this English language version (the two were shot backto-back) is just as lush and enthralling, with the lyricism of the language matched by rich dream-like imagery. This is the first screen adaptation since Richard Burton’s 1972 version, and it certainly revels in its visceral and visual interpretation of Thomas’ rich text and striking imagery.

The Scottish Premiere of Terence Davies’ (The Long Day Closes) long-anticipated, exquisitely shot adaptation of Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s 1932 novel - presented by Metrodome and Edinburgh International Film Festival. Scratching a livelihood out of the stunning but harsh terrain, the Guthrie family cowers in obedient fear of its brooding patriarch (Peter Mullan), a man prone to sudden and ferocious bursts of anger. As Guthrie’s wife retreats into silence, the film’s attention shifts to his daughter Chris (Agyness Deyn), a beautiful and intelligent young woman divided between her hatred for the coarse people in her village and her love of the landscape. She and her brother Will (Jack Greenlees) dream of freedom and escape, and life changes for Chris with the arrival of handsome young Ewan (Kevin Guthrie). Agyness Deyn, Kevin Guthrie and director Terence Davies are expected to attend as special guests for this Scottish Premiere. Filmhouse will have a limited number of tickets for this event available for public sale. Presented by Edinburgh International Film Festival

Adapted for the screen by Alan Bennett from his 1999 hit West End play of the same name, The Lady in the Van is based on the true story of an elderly woman who lived in her van - a van which remained parked in Bennett’s driveway for 15 years. The 1970s-set story explores this unusual and unlikely bond between a rather eccentric transient woman (Maggie Smith) and the liberal, middle-class writer (Alex Jennings), with Maggie Smith returning to the role she’s played twice before, on stage and in a radio production.

Anime Nere Showing from Fri 13 Nov Francesco Munzi • Italy/France 2014 • 1h43m • Digital • Italian with English subtitles • 15 - Contains strong language, violence, drug use Cast: Marco Leonardi, Peppino Mazzotta, Fabrizio Ferracane.

In rural Southern Italy, the ‘Ndrangheta organisation operate a vast and lucrative network of drug trafficking, extortion and money laundering. Black Souls leads us into a sinister world in which violence and vendetta are inherited from generation to generation. Using professional and non-professional actors, Munzi’s film focuses on three brothers - Luigi (Leonardi), Rocco (Mazzotta) and Luciano (Ferracane) Carbone - who become engaged in an escalating blood feud with a rival family, recently reignited through the impetuous actions of Luciano’s son.

Having already flouted the regulations of the state ban on his filmmaking with This Is Not a Film, Iranian auteur Jafar Panahi gets behind the wheel in Taxi Tehran. Now ‘re-trained’ as a driver, Panahi drives a modest cab around Tehran, picking up and dropping a host of people, with the whole experience captured on fixed internal cameras - for security purposes, of course. His passengers are actors, non-professionals and friends of Panahi, improvising their roles as customers and bringing a range of characters - some more serious than others - to the rolling narrative of the city and its people.

Brooklyn Showing from Fri 20 Nov John Crowley • Ireland/UK/Canada 2015 • 1h51m • Digital 12A - Contains infrequent strong language, moderate sex Cast: Saoirse Ronan, Domhnall Gleeson, Emory Cohen, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent.

Young Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan) arrives in New York City in the early 1950s, having left the comfort and security of her mother’s home in Ireland. Initially overwhelmed by the city, she soon finds herself swept up in a new, exciting Brooklyn romance. Returning home to visit her family, Eilis easily settles back into Irish life, and a reunion with a former acquaintance leaves her with an agonising decision between two men, two countries and two lives.

A provocative sensation at Cannes, Gaspar Noé’s Love is notable in that it collides, head-on, with one of the last taboos of cinema: the authentic sex scene. The narrative hinges on the relationship between cinema school student Murphy (Karl Glusman); Omi (Klara Kristin), with whom he has fathered a child; and a previous, darker relationship of his. Feeling trapped by his parental responsibilities, he recalls his past with Electra (Aomi Muyock) and the - explicitly demonstrated - intimacy once shared by all three of them. The narrative timeline shifts around with ease, and Noé’s camera expertly captures the “sentimental sexuality” (as referred to by Murphy) with initially unsettling realism. Please note there is an additional £2 charge for 3D screenings at Filmhouse.

Steven Spielberg • USA 2015 • 2h21m • Digital • 12A - Contains infrequent strong language, moderate threat, violence Cast: Tom Hanks, Mark Rylance, Amy Ryan, Alan Alda.

Paul Sng and Nathan Hannawin • UK 2015 1h25m • Digital • 18 Documentary featuring Jason Williamson, Andrew Fearn.

At the height of the Cold War, American lawyer James Donovan (Tom Hanks) still holds firmly to the principle that all are entitled to a fair trial. This belief is put to the test when he is assigned the defence of hated Soviet agent Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance), who is expected to be given little more than a show trial before his summary execution. Matters then become increasingly complex as an American spy is captured behind the Iron Curtain, and Donovan is sent to Berlin to act as a go-between in the potential exchange between East and West. A consummately crafted study pitting one man’s idealism against both lynch-mob mentality and realpolitik, Bridge of Spies is Steven Spielberg’s richlylayered follow-up to the Oscar-winning Lincoln, and features a gripping screenplay co-written by rising British dramatist Matt Charman and the Coen Brothers.

Invisible Britain, part band doc, part look at the state of the nation, follows the group on their recent tour of the UK, visiting places which probably don’t even exist in the minds of many - the neglected, broken down and boarded up parts of the UK that most would prefer to ignore. Taking its cue from the likes of Patrick Keiller’s extraordinary Robinson Trilogy, the wanderings of Iain Sinclair, and J.G. Ballard’s comment “The future is just going to be a vast, conforming suburb of the soul”, the documentary is a combination of raw footage of the band, interviews with fans, and a look at what individuals and communities are doing to resist socalled austerity measures. This film aims to tell the story of how the most relevant British band in years stuck two fingers up to the zeitgeist and gave voice to the pent up rage and anger at ineffectual politicians and their neglect of the institutions which underpin civilised society. This screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Paul Sng.

The 1960s - the USA is in a state of great unease, with Vietnam, equality and civil rights at the top of the agenda. A new revolutionary culture is emerging .The Black Panther Party for Self-Defense would, for a short time, put itself at the vanguard of that change. This is the first feature length documentary to explore the Black Panther Party, its cultural significance and painful lessons wrought when a movement derails. It skilfully brings together rare archival footage and interviews with the people who were there - police, FBI informants, white supporters/detractors and Black Panther Party members.

Play Poland Film Festival is the largest mobile film event in the United Kingdom, aiming at presenting and promoting contemporary Polish cinema.

Karolina Bielawska • Poland 2015 • 1h15m • Digital • Polish with English subtitles • 15 • Documentary

Wajda School has been active for over 10 years. It was founded in Warsaw by Andrzej Wajda and Wojciech Marczewski. It offers a unique combination of production and education for film professionals.

Before she officially became Marianna, she lived as a man. She had a family, children, and a job at the Warsaw Metro. But she had a constant sense of unease - a female mind trapped in Wojtek’s male body. When she was 43 years old, Marianna realised that she could no longer live as a man. Her mother still calls her ‘Wojtek’, her ex-wife avoids encounters, and her children have grown distant. Marianna understands their reactions, fears and grudges, but there is no one who understands her. Call Me Marianna is not a story about a transsexual. It is a story about loneliness, hope, and the price one has to pay for it.

This year’s festival will visit ten global locations, including Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Belfast, London, Ottawa and, for the first time, Kuala Lumpur. Play Poland is organised by Polish Art Europe Ltd. For more information on the festival go to www.playpoland.org.uk

Nicolas Vanier has successfully adapted the famous 1965 TV series by Cécile Aubry for the big screen.

A wonderful family film from the team at Aardman. Santa Claus is nearing retirement, with his superefficient but joyless son Steven ready to take over. But the future of the position of Head of Christmas looks less certain when a child is left without a present and the only person prepared to put things right is Steven’s hapless brother, Arthur.

Le silence de la mer

Sun 8 Nov at 6.30pm Jean-Pierre Melville • France 1949 • 1h28m • Digital • French, German and English with English subtitles • 15 Cast: Howard Vernon, Nicole Stéphane, Ami Aaröe, Jean-Marie Robin, Georges Patrix.

Le Silence de la mer centres on a cultivated Francophile German officer (Howard Vernon) billeted with an elderly Frenchman and his daughter in a village outside Paris, who defiantly remain mute in his presence. Meanwhile, the officer delivers idealistic monologues about a marriage between Germany and France that will bring about a new Europe, though he gradually realises how absurd such a belief is. This screening will be introduced by Martine Pierquin from Short Courses at the University of Edinburgh.

SK1 L’affaire SK1 Sun 8 Nov at 8.40pm Frédéric Tellier • France 2013 • 2h • Digital • French with English subtitles • 18 Cast: Raphaël Personnaz, Olivier Gourmet, Nathalie Baye.

The inability of the French police to bring to justice a notorious serial killer became a cause célèbre in France in the 1990s and was groundbreaking in its use of DNA evidence... Loosely based on the investigation into real-life murderer Guy Georges (aka the Beast of the Bastille), the story extracts suspense from the procedural aspects of the manhunt, the false leads, dead ends, and the stifling bureaucracy of a police force hindered by dwindling budgets and a knee-jerk insistence on outdated, traditional methods.

Mon amie Victoria

Jean-Paul Civeyrac • France 2014 • 1h35m • Digital • French with English subtitles • 15 Cast: Guslagie Malanda, Nadia Moussa, Catherine Mouchet, Pascal Greggory.

A serial killer is on the loose in Paris, identified only by a sinister calling card left on the victims. It is up to the Inspector (Pierre Fresnay), with the unwanted help of his fame-hungry wife Mila (Suzy Delair) to infiltrate a hostel and discover which of the eccentric array of guests could be the most notorious criminal in the land. At the behest of Joseph Goebbels, films in France at this time were strictly light entertainment. As a result, this is more of a comedy than a drama and yet what suspense and intrigue there is in the film is so cleverly placed it only enhances the experience.

Based on Victoria and the Staveneys by Doris Lessing, an eight-year-old orphan, Victoria (Keylia Achie Beguie), is taken into the home of a white bourgeois family for a single night, fuelling her dreams of comfort and privilege for the rest of her life. As an adult (now played by Guslagie Malanda), she reconnects with the youngest son of her host family, bearing his child after a brief affair. All the while she drifts from job to job, independent yet lacking focus except for that one night from her childhood.

This screening will be introduced by Martine Pierquin from Short Courses at the University of Edinburgh.

Stanislas Merhar and Clotilde Courau play Pierre and Manon, a married couple working in fragile harmony on Pierre’s documentary film projects, the latest of which is a portrait of a resistance fighter (Jean Pommier). When Pierre takes a lover (Lena Paugam), he feels entitled to do so, and he treats both wife and mistress with disengagement bordering on disdain. When Manon catches Pierre in the act, her immediate response is to find common ground with her husband. The Clearstream Affair

Wed 11 Nov at 6.00pm

Fri 13 Nov at 8.40pm

Vie sauvage Sat 14 Nov at 6.00pm

Stefan Liberski • Belgium/France/Canada 2015 • 1h40m • Digital French, Japanese and English with English subtitles • 15 Cast: Pauline Étienne, Taichi Inoue.

Vincent Garenq • France/Luxembourg/Belgium 2014 • 1h46m Digital • French, English and Mandarin with English subtitles • 15 Cast: Gilles Lelouche, Charles Berling, Laurent Capelluto.

Cédric Kahn • Belgium/France 2014 • 1h42m • Digital • French with English subtitles • 15 Cast: Mathieu Kassovitz, Celine Sallette.

Amélie (Pauline Étienne) is in love with all things Japanese, which prompts her to buy a one-way ticket to Tokyo and completely immerse herself in the culture. She decides to become a French tutor, and soon finds herself enjoying a passionate relationship with her only student, the charming Rinri (Taichi Inoue). As the couple explores the joys (and awkwardness) of their first real romance and the colourful city around them, many cultural barriers fall but some still remain. Director Stefan Liberski will be in attendance to introduce the film and take part in a Q&A.

Based on the real exploits of Denis Robert - an investigative journalist who spent years tracking the illicit activities of the Luxembourg-based Clearstream bank, uncovering ties with leading French companies and government officials, this is a cracking high finance thriller. His quest to try to reveal the “affaire des affaires” connects with the investigation carried out by Judge Renaud Van Ruymbeke (Charles Berling), deeply committed to fighting against corruption.

Carole and Philippe (Céline Sallette and Mathieu Kassovitz), tired of propriety and consumerism, opt to renounce civilisation and live off the land. Calling themselves Nora and Paco, they lead a nomadic life in their caravan, gradually adding children to the mix. But when Nora tires of their itinerant lifestyle and gains custody of their sons, Philippe refuses to allow his progeny to be raised according to the societal codes he abhors.

Emmanuelle Bercot • France 2015 • 1h58m • Digital • French with English subtitles • 15 Cast: Catherine Deneuve, Rod Paradot, Benoit Magimel, Sara Forestier, Diane Rouxel.

Chronicling the turbulent teenage years of a French youngster with police record as long as your arm, Standing Tall is a gritty and compassionate look at an adolescence riddled by violence, punishment and the idea that rehabilitation is a long way off, but not entirely out of the question. Carried by an electric lead performance from newcomer Rod Paradot, this fourth feature from actress turned director Emmanuelle Bercot can be as volatile as its main character. We hope to be joined by Rod Paradot for an introduction and Q&A.

Sat 14 Nov at 3.50pm François Delisle • Canada 2015 • 1h36m • Digital • French, Spanish and Arabic with English subtitles • 15 Cast: Sébastien Ricard, Fanny Mallette, Geneviève Bujold.

A separated couple meet again after ten years when the body of their missing son is found. During their forced reunion, they both handle the death of their child in their own way. Amid the guilt of losing a loved one, they haltingly move toward affirmation of life, acceptance of death and even the possibility of a reconciliation. Chorus is a love story that emerges from mourning and leads to two survivors clinging to each other as if to heal the deepest cut of all.

Sun 15 Nov at 3.45pm Samuel Benchetrit • France 2015 • 1h40m • Digital • French and English with English subtitles • 15 Cast: Isabelle Huppert, Michael Pitt, Gustave Kervern.

Set within a run-down block of flats, this quirky and endearing comedy-drama marks a strong fifth feature from writer-director-actor Samuel Benchetrit (I Always Wanted to Be a Gangster). It unfolds in a series of cleverly conceived vignettes. Both amusing and tender the film focuses on several downtrodden characters scraping by in a forgotten industrial wasteland. Among the building’s diverse tenants are the terminally depressed Sternkowitz (Gustave Kervern). Upstairs from him lives Charly (Jules Benchetrit), a teenage boy with permanently absent parents who befriends his new next door neighbour, the actress Jeanne Meyer (Huppert). The casting also includes American actor Michael Pitt as an astronaut who lands on the roof of one of the blocks.

Eric Barbier • France/Luxembourg/Belgium 2014 • 1h48m Digital French with English subtitles • 12A Cast: Berenice Bejo, Yvan Attal.

Actor Louis Garrel (Saint Laurent) made his directorial feature debut at Cannes Critics’ Week by adding a twist to the two-guys-and-a-girl scenario. Set over the course of three tumultuous days and nights, the freewheeling narrative works best during a handful of energetic set-pieces. Vincent has known Mona barely a week but he’s already completely in love with her. But Mona has a secret - she goes home to prison every night. When Vincent doesn’t understand her intentions, he asks his only friend, Abel, for help.

A moving and invigorating family comedy-drama based on a bestselling novel by David Foenkinos and directed by actor-turned-filmmaker Jean-Paul Rouve. Romain (Mathieu Spinosi) is a sort-of aspiring writer who takes a job as a night watchman in a Paris hotel. When his grandfather dies and his father (Michel Blanc) retires, Romain’s family is thrown seriously off course, with his parents experiencing a mid-life crisis and his grandmother (Annie Cordy) ditching the retirement home in search of her haunted past.

Simon (Yvan Attal), a thief released on parole, agrees to carry out the biggest job of his life: to steal the “Florentin,” a mythical diamond being auctioned by its owners. To succeed, he must get close to Julia (Berenice Bejo), a diamond expert, for whom the sale is of considerable personal importance. Simon uses his thieving skills to seduce Julia, who’s been put in charge of the jewel’s auction following her mother’s mysterious death. Like his stylised 2006 thriller The Serpent (also starring Attal), Barbier provides an extremely polished sheen to the proceedings.

Here’s a perfect seasonal choice for all ages. On Christmas Eve, Antoine (Victor Cabal) not only looks forward to the usual toys, but dreams of hitching a ride on Santa’s sleigh, so he can visit the star where he believes his deceased father resides. With a clear wink at The Little Prince, just one of director Alexandre Coffre’s sources, Antoine seems to get his wish when he sees someone in the traditional red-andwhite costume climbing up and down the building. This someone even has a flowing white beard. In fact, it’s not Santa but a cat burglar (Tahar Rahim) set on stealing anything he can lays his hands on. Only the most hard-hearted could fail to be won over by this sentimental, comic fairy tale.

The festival is jointly organised by Filmhouse Edinburgh and Goethe-Institut Glasgow, in collaboration with partner venues and institutions from across Scotland.

BELOVED SISTERS

A young woman, Victoria, dances through the Berlin scene with abandon until she meets a group of four men. After slipping away with one of them, their tender flirting is rudely interrupted by the others: they’ve not come out to party, but to settle an old debt by pulling off a dodgy deal. And, with one of them now unable to drive, they hastily decide that Victoria should take his place... We hope to welcome cameraman Sturla Brandth Grøvlen for a Q&A following this screening.

The first full-length work of Bertolt Brecht, this television production of Baal transposes the action from the Weimar Republic to contemporary West Germany. Here, the eponymous anarchic poet (Rainer Werner Fassbinder) lives in abject squalor and finds himself alternately feted and rejected by bourgeois society. Baal roams through forests and along motorways, greedy for schnapps, cigarettes, women and men. After the film’s initial broadcast, Brecht’s widow prohibited any further screenings, and it was only in 2011 that Brecht’s granddaughter reversed the decision, leading to the 2014 restoration shown here.

In one of Fassbinder’s most highly-regarded and accessible films, he takes the lead role as Franz, an unemployed showman and prostitute whose fortunes change after he wins the lottery. Swapping his workingclass roots for a new milieu, he falls in with an antiques dealer who introduces him to his elegant circle of gay friends - including the manipulative Eugen, the scion of a once-prominent family fallen on financial hard times. As the two move in together, Eugen’s exploitation of Franz (both emotionally and financially) becomes ever more apparent. Inbetween Worlds

B-Movie: Lust & Sound in West-Berlin 1979-1989

In Echigo, the snow often lies several feet deep, covering landscape and villages well into May. Over the centuries, the Japanese town’s inhabitants have learned to organise their lives accordingly. Veteran director Ulrike Ottinger journeys to this mythical snow country - accompanied by two kabuki performers - to record their very distinctive forms of everyday life, along with festivals and religious rituals. Her resulting documentary combines the influences of kabuki, the remarkable Snow Country Tales of the 19th-century writer Bokushi Suzuki, the music of Yumiko Tanaka and the realities of life in Echigo to create a visually striking and moving work. £6/£5

The five interwoven strands of Finsterworld explore uncharted territory amidst innocence and perversion, and the fine line between kindness and barbarity. Depicting a school trip to a former concentration camp, the relationship between a policeman and a documentary filmmaker, the strange rituals of a retirement home pedicurist, the tale of a forest hermit raising a baby raven, and a rather snobby couple on a road-trip, the film opens up a series of little abysses which lead to a cumulative dramatic impact. £6/£5

During the last days of the Second World War, Maria (Hanna Schygulla) marries Hermann Braun - but their marriage lasts only one night before he is called back to the front and reported missing. In his absence, Maria’s belief that her husband is alive and will return to her leads to inevitable tragedy. THE OFFICERS’ WARD

THEFIRSTWORLDWARINCINEMA

The Officers’ Ward Thu 19 Nov at 8.25pm François Dupeyron • France 2001 • 2h15m • 35mm • French with English subtitles • 15 Cast: Eric Caravaca, Denis Podalydes, Grégori Derangere, Sabine Azema, André Dussollier.

August 1914. In the sultry heat of an uncommonly hot summer, Europe marches to war. The wide-eyed Adrien (Eric Caravaca) is part of this mass mobilisation of men that sent France’s youth into combat with Germany for the glory of la patrie. Caught up in the adrenaline of the moment, he spends a wild night with a beautiful, nameless woman who has just seen her husband depart for the front. But there is no time for reflection: Adrien is called up the next day. Riding to a hilltop to observe advancing German troops, he hears a whistle and an explosion. Adrien’s war is over, but the battle for his life is about to begin. What follows is a deeply moving story about a group of war-torn men struggling to confront the fact that they are alive but with wounds that are shocking to everyone. François Dupeyron turns this story of disfigurement into one with much wider implications. Eschewing sensationalism and finding humour and resilience in his subject, he has crafted a profoundly emotional and powerful celebration of our ability to survive and to overcome life’s greatest tragedies.

APOCALYPSE NOW

Come and See... A monthly, one-off screening of a great film we simply thought you might like to see, again or for the first time, on the big screen.

Apocalypse Now Tue 1 Dec at 8.20pm Francis Ford Coppola • USA 1979 • 2h27m • Digital • English, French, Vietnamese and Khmer with English subtitles 15 - Contains strong violence, gore and strong language Cast: Marlon Brando, Martin Sheen, Robert Duvall, Dennis Hopper, Harrison Ford.

Heralded by many as the film that crystallises most perfectly the experience of the Vietnam War, Francis Ford Coppola’s hallucinatory masterpiece has been painstakingly restored by his own Zoetrope studios under his close supervision. Troubled US Captain Willard (Martin Sheen), is given a special mission, to go far upriver into Cambodia. Once there, he is to track down renegade Colonel Kurtz (Brando) - a man who is waging his own personal and violent war - and assassinate him. Arriving on location massively overweight and with a shaven head, Brando was not exactly what Coppola had in mind as the power-crazed Kurtz. But, amid the psychedelia and barbarism, the brooding presence of the actor glimpsed in half-shadow brought a mythical quality to the role.

Edinburgh Greek Film Festival

URANYA

Edinburgh Greek Film Festival Years ago the Greek Festival was like a message in a bottle reaching us from a country about which we had ideas but few details. Now Greece is the crucible in which notions of the future of Europe, and of us all, are being tested to destruction. Greeks now feel like very near neighbours – noisy now and again, a bit daft, very entertaining and with stories to tell. This festival has the Greece we all know and the Greece behind it. We have a small town dealing with the Colonel’s dictatorship as an incidental inconvenience, an island whose history would break your heart and open your understanding, a Quixotic, reluctant, panoramic Odyssey and a cameo of Greek family life as it would be if a child took charge. Despite recent events, Greece has neither calmed down nor exploded. Greece continues. And makes films we are delighted to be able to show to Scotland.

It’s 1969. Greece has The Colonels but the village has matters of real importance on its mind. The lads are saving up to lose their virginities with professional help - the only way, so they think. But the moon landing will be televised and the village has no TV set. Should they buy a TV instead? But TV is run by the Colonels. Nobody’s father wants the Colonels; everybody’s mother wants a TV. Can little boys have it all? Can grown men behave? Yes and No maybe, but not necessarily in that order. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Costas Kapakas.

At last - a big sweeping romantic historical drama from Greece, where history has never lacked drama. Little England is the island of Andros, whose shipping once rivalled England’s. The islandmen rule the waves, the women run almost everything else. This is a story of star-crossed lovers, star-crossed sisters and, of course, Mothers - Patriarchy with added matriarchs on one small island. Ioanna Karystiani’s novel has been crying out for filming since its publication in 1997 and here it is, directed by her husband Pandelis Voulgaris in his most assessible and involving film.

They find Greece and a possible father. They prefer Greece. They accept their baggage. Not all Odysseys have to take you home, or to end. Three intertwining stories about men - from past, present and future - pursuing eternity with their love is the central premise of Darren Aronofsky’s third feature film. In a deeply personal and ambitious project, Aronofsky explores love, death and grief through the stories of Tomás, Tom and Tommy (Hugh Jackman), with layered subtleties that complement the often vivid and ornate visuals. Garnering a reputation as rather divisive among critics, this is a grandiose, sincere and unquestionably original piece of cinema.

Not exactly shy of breaking a few ethical rules here and there, he’s also got a laboratory in his basement.... and a beautiful woman in a flesh-coloured unitard he keeps imprisoned in a room upstairs... Suffice to say, Thierry Jonquet’s source novel, ‘Mygale’, gives the world’s favourite Spanish auteur ample opportunity to explore his customary themes and stylings, albeit in a genre he’s perhaps not readily associated with.

The story of foul-mouthed cop John McClane is an action classic that deserves to be seen on the big screen. It’s Christmas time in Los Angeles, and there’s an employee party in progress on the 30th floor of the Nakatomi Corporation building. The revelry comes to a violent end when the partygoers are taken hostage by a group of terrorists headed by Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman), who plan to steal the 600 million dollars locked in Nakatomi’s high-tech safe. Meanwhile, New York cop McClane (Bruce Willis) has come to LA to visit his estranged wife, Holly (Bonnie Bedelia), who happens to be one of the hostages... Edward Ross, the author of Filmish: A Graphic Journey Through Film, will be here to introduce the film, and there will be a book signing after the movie.
