STATISTICS 2012 July 11th Mugello

#09 Gran Premio d'Italia TIM Mugello facts and statistics

T

his is the 27th occasion that a GP has been held at the Mugello circuit, including 22 consecutive years since 1991. Mugello has seen many great races over the years and below are some of the facts and figures from these previous Grand Prix events: The first time a Grand Prix event was held at Mugello was in 1976 when the 500cc race was won by Barry Sheene, riding a Suzuki, by a margin of just 0.1 sec from Phil Read (Suzuki) in one of the closest finishes of all time. The only two venues on this year’s calendar that have a longer ongoing sequence of hosting Grand Prix events are Jerez and Assen A total of 84 Grand Prix races for solo motorcycles have been held at the Mugello circuit as follows: MotoGP – 10, 500cc – 16, 350cc – 2, 250cc – 24, Moto2™ – 2, 125cc – 25, 50cc/80cc – 5. Yamaha have been the most successful manufacturer in the four-stroke MotoGP era with five successive victories from 2004 through to 2008, in addition to the win with Lorenzo last year. Honda have had three victories in the MotoGP class at Mugello, and Ducati a single win with Stoner in 2009. Valentino Rossi is the most successful rider across all the classes at Mugello, with a total of nine victories; one each in 125cc and 250cc classes to add to his seven successive MotoGP wins. Loris Capirossi was the first Italian rider to take a premier-class victory at Mugello when he won the 500cc race in 2000 after a race long battle with his countrymen Biaggi and Rossi, both of whom fell in the closing stages. The highest recorded maximum speed at Mugello is 349 kph (217 mph) set by Dani Pedrosa in the first free practice session in 2009. The MotoGP race at Mugello in 2004 is the shortest ever premier-class Grand Prix race. The race lasted just six laps, after the first attempt to run the race was stopped due to rain and then restarted for the remaining laps under the rain rules as they stood at that time.

Jorge Lorenzo betters Valentino Rossi’s podium statistics

J

orge Lorenzo’s second place finish in Germany was the 51st time he has stood on the podium in the MotoGP class from just 75 starts. This gives him a podium finishing rate of 68% which moves him above Valentino Rossi in the following list of riders with the best podium rate in the “modern-era” of Grand Prix racing (from 1975). This record of Lorenzo’s is even more impressive taking into account that during his career in the MotoGP class he has been competing against Valentino Rossi, Casey Stoner and Dani Pedrosa who also appear in the following list.

PODIUM RATE FOR RIDERS OF THE MODERN-ERA OF GP RACING Rider 1. Wayne Rainey 2. Mick Doohan 3. Jorge Lorenzo 4. Valentino Rossi 5. Kenny Roberts (Snr) 6. Eddie Lawson 7. Casey Stoner 8. Dani Pedrosa 9. Wayne Gardner 10. Freddie Spencer 10. Pat Hennen

July 11th Mugello

Grand Prix racing numbers 63 – Dani Pedrosa’s win in Germany was the 63rd time he has stood on the podium in the MotoGP class. This is just

one premier-class podium less than achieved by three times 500cc world champions Wayne Rainey during his GP career.

59 – Following his sixth place finish in Germany, Zulfahmi Khairuddin has scored 59 points so far in 2012, which is already the greatest number of points achieved by a Malaysian rider in a single season of Grand Prix racing; a record previously held by Shahrol Yuzy who scored 58 points in the 250cc class in 2002.

28 - Ben Spies celebrates his 28th birthday on the Wednesday before the Italian Grand Prix and Yuki Takahashi’s 28th birthday is on the Thursday.

22 – Casey Stoner’s crash in Germany resulted in him not finishing a race for the first time since the Spanish GP last year, since when he had finished on the podium at twenty-two successive races.

20 – Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa have both qualified on pole on 20 occasions in the MotoGP class, jointly holding the record for most premier-class poles by a Spanish rider.

16 - At least one Italian rider has stood on the podium in the premier-class GP race at Mugello for the last sixteen years. The last premier-class podium at Mugello without at least one Italian rider was 1995.

14.996 seconds – Dani Pedrosa’s winning margin at the German GP was the second largest of the four-stroke MotoGP era in dry weather conditions. The only race that has a larger winning margin was the Czech GP at Brno in 2008, when Valentino Rossi won from Toni Elias with a margin of 15.004 seconds.

5 – Five riders in the MotoGP class have scored at every one of the opening eight races of the year: Dani Pedrosa, Cal Crutchlow, Valentino Rossi, Nicky Hayden and Hector Barbera.

STATISTICS 2012 #09 Gran Premio d'Italia TIM

July 11th Mugello

Moto2 class facts & figures Marc Marquez won the tremendous 125cc GP race at Mugello in 2010 when just 0.161 seconds covered the first four riders across the line; this was his first GP victory. Last year he qualified on pole for the Moto2 race in Italy and won after a race long battle with Stefan Bradl and Bradley Smith – with less than half a second covering the three riders at the chequered flag. Pol Espargaro twice finished on the podium at Mugello when competing in the 125cc class – third in both 2008 and 2010. He qualified 6th for the Moto2 race last year in Italy, but crashed on lap thirteen, then re-started to take 28th place. Thomas Luthi has had two podium finishes at Mugello: 2nd in the 125cc race in 2005 and 3rd in the 250cc race in 2008. In 2010 he battled for a podium finish throughout the Moto2 race at Mugello, but just missed out and finished 4th. Last year at Mugello Luthi qualified down in 24th place on the grid, but made a big improvement in the race to finish sixth. Andrea Iannone retired from the 125cc race at Mugello in 2009 on lap six with mechanical problems when battling with the leading group. He dominated the Moto2 race at the Italian GP in 2010, with pole position, flag-to-flag race win and fastest lap. Iannone qualified down in 15th place on the grid last year, but battled his way through the field up to the fight for the podium, before eventually finishing fifth.
