“Way forward”

Foreword On this holiday period, I found myself writing these words for our third edition of the FIM Environment Newsletter. Looking back, it has been a year with hard work and a lot of satisfaction from a personal and professional perspective; contributing to the improvement of the FIM sustainable policy is a great satisfaction. And with that spirit of goodwill, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our readers for their proactive, inspiring and sincere comments that are making us growing every day in this sustainable motorcycling community, a community that is acquiring every day more environmental awareness.

This is also a time for reflection while we are reaching the end of a cycle and each end gives us the opportunity for a new beginning. For 2012, one of our aims is the improvement of the work carried out.

I want to especially address a few words to all those volunteers who have donated their valuable time to our sporting community to ensure that our events are as sustainable as possible, the members of the CIE, the members of the working groups and committees of the Continental Unions and National Federations.

Please receive from El Salvador, my home country, my most sincere congratulations on this holiday season and I wish you all a fantastic New Year.

Continuous improvement is a very important strategy for this administration and this always requires welcoming your comments and suggestions that are from our point of view really inspiring and showing your proactivity.

In addition, I would like to send to our Environmental Stewards a cordial greeting and my most sincere thanks for their dedication and contribution.

AND THE WINNER IS… The 2011 FIM Environmental Award has been presented during the FIM Gala Ceremony held on 4 December in Estoril, Portugal.

After having reviewed the 5 candidatures, the Jury composed by Mr Andrzej Witkowski, FIM Award and Recognition Committee Representative, Mrs Kattia Hernandez, FIM International Environment Commission (CIE) Director, Ms Jill Savery, Olympic Gold medallist and environmental consultant and Mr Even Wiger, Director of Sustainability at the FIA Foundation decided to award Motorcycling Australia (MA) for their impressive work on the McAdam Park circuit to promote sustainability that included the following achievements: 

Contribution to the development of a sustainable motorcycling,



Commitment to reduce the environmental footprint of motorcycling events in Australia, especially at the McAdam Park circuit, and promote the respect of the environment,



Involvement of the local community while organising events,



Involvement and education of future generations,



Development of a global programme that includes all actions taken before, during and after event,



Presentation of a model for other sporting venues.

A special mention was also given by the Jury to Federación Catalana de Motociclismo (FCM) for their continuous effort to promote a sustainable motorcycling and for their support to the motorcycling community in the Catalan region.

FROM CONTINENTAL UNIONS & NATIONAL FEDERATIONS Environmental Workshop in Guayaquil Equador For the second time, an environmental workshop for riders was organised on the occasion of the FIM Latin American 85cc Motocross Championship and Women’s Motocross Cup in Guayaquil (Ecuador). Just like last year in Tangancicuaro (Mexico), this workshop created interesting interaction.

Host speaker was Mr Ovidio Morales, Director of the FIM Latin America Environmental Commission.

He explained the facilitator role of the Commission in regard to organisers and riders and their respect of environmental acquirements. In this ever changing world, continuous efforts and improvements were necessary in order to achieve the objectives of “going beyond” the sport, incite the persons to make the efforts also in their day to day life and to transform them into “life objectives”.

Moreover, he raised the riders’ environmental awareness and motivation highlighting the following topics: 1.

The “golden rule” that riders should not accelerate their motorcycles when it was not necessary.

Trash should always be disposed correctly.

Fuel and oil should be disposed correctly.

Riders should always use an environmental mat.

Riders should not use chemicals or soap when they wash their motorcycles.

A plastic card reminding them of these principles was distributed to the riders (see below).

Mr Morales remained available for riders and organisers during the entire weekend giving additional information whenever requested.

The Environmental Commission, together with FIM Latin America, intends to continue this initiative in the future.

FIM Africa – Improving the Environment FIM Africa Environmental Working Group, chaired by Mr Marius Matthee, had celebrated their annual meeting in the framework of the FIM Africa Congress recently held in Cape Town.

One of the main targets of this Working Group has been to continue their full commitment in improving the FIM Africa Environmental Policy.

Moreover, they also agreed upon the content of the recently compiled FIM Africa Environmental Action Plan that will give additional guidelines to the FMNs which are not yet fully committed to develop a strong environmental policy or that did not include the respect of the environment in their duties as National Federations.

Killarney Raceway goes greener September is springtime in the Cape and the Western Province Motor Club, with the support of Motorsport South Africa (National Federation) and the International Motorcycle Federation (FIM), recently planted several trees as part of a greening campaign at their Killarney Circuit near Cape Town.

This was done in celebration of Arbor Week, but also to reiterate their continued commitment to provide an environmentally friendly venue.

With this effort the WPMC further wishes to contribute in neutralising motorsport’s carbon foot print and to make the supporting public aware of the club’s contribution towards sound environmental practices. Sporting events worldwide is getting bigger by the day and is seen as an important economic factor in society, but so too the negative aspects associated with it. These also concern the Environment and the planning and staging of environmentally-sound sporting events is thus essential.

The Killarney Circuit (WPMC) was the recipient of Motorsport South Africa’a annual environmental award in 2009 which is presented the to circuit, organiser or club who has taken the most care of the environment during the course of the calendar year. An achievement which was also acknowledged by Mrs. Helen Zille, Premier of the Western Cape province, in her foreword of a book commemorating 50 years of racing history at Killarney.

FIM Seminars – training National Federations Part of the social responsibility of our institution is to create environmental awareness and train our Environmental Stewards working in the various World Championships, Continental and National events focusing on our sustainability policy.

In 2011, the FIM Environment Commission carried out the following seminars:  Rugby, Great Britain (12 March), instructor Peter Gregory Participants: 14 participants from 1 FMN  Serres, Greece (2-3 April), instructor Paul Janssens Participants: 11 participants from 3 FMNs  Montevideo, Uruguay (3-4 April), instructor Katia Hernandez Participants: 21 participants from 5 FMNs  Frankfurt, Germany (12 November), instructor Karl-Friedrich Ziegahn Participants: 20 participants from 2 FMNs  Warsaw, Poland (3-4 December), instructor Peter Gregory Participants: 31 participants from 8 FMNs
