OF THE MONTH Maroondah Winter Shelter

Maroondah Winter Shelter first opened its doors in 2018. The program provides support for homeless men in the Maroondah area. Volunteers provide care and support for up to 12 homeless men by providing homecooked meals, safe overnight shelter and an opportunity to wash and shower.

The program operates during winter, 7 nights per week and accommodation is provided in 7 different churches in Maroondah.

At dinner time our guests and volunteers all sit down together to eat. One guest with tears in his eyes said, this is just like being at home. I feel as though I am with family.

Referrals to the program come via Uniting Ringwood and Wellways. Our program starts 1 June-mid September. We welcome more volunteers, especially for the overnight shift 10pm-7am.

In 2020 when Covid hit, the program was not needed because most homeless people were given accommodation in motels.

Instead, it became a takeaway meals program and offered meals 4 times per week to people needing support. Winter Shelter Meals also provided meals to the staff from Circus Royale who were unable to perform during lockdowns and therefore unable to generate any income.

The meals program has now become a sit-down dining program operating from Croydon and Ringwood, twice per week. If you are interested in any either of our programs, please contact Gitta Clayton or see our web site to apply for the homelessness program or the community meals.
