“What is your name?” “…” “Well, I will give you a name then. Your name is Paul now.
Hello,
Ian gave out some food for the baby chick, since he felt bad that it was looking through the waste.
Paul.”
Ian put a warm muffler around the baby penguin. They made friends.
One day, Ian asked Paul. “Where is your home? Where are your friends?” Paul smiled, but didn’t say anything.
Paul came to see Ian each and every day. Ian cooked for Paul. Together, they had lots and lots of fun.
One day, the news told of a snow storm coming. Ian was thinking of Paul, so he hurried to make food for him. But Paul didn’t eat anything, and quickly, he went out of the base.
Ian thought something was s t ra n g e.

After quite a while, Ian and his friends knew that they were at the end of the ice hill.
“Wow!” “I have never been to this kind of place.”
“This is real Antarctica.” Everyone looked at the wonderful sight that they have never seen. “By the way, Where is Paul?”
Ian and his friends quickly came down the ice hill. Then they just stood there in a big surprise. There was nowhere to put their feet on the snowy ground. It was packed with a great many eggs.
“He must have gone downward, over there.”
“Oh! He’s over there!”
“What are these?” “Are they really penguin eggs?” “All of them?” Many of the eggs could not hatch and froze with cracks.
Ian shouted, looking through the field glasses. Paul was silently walking on the snowy field.
“How come there are no mother penguins?”
Ian and his friends were quiet for a moment. They started making their way again, but they couldn’t find Paul.
When they got to the place, everyone could see what the thing was.
Then, there was something sparkling far over there. “Did you see that over there?” Ian asked.
“Yes,
Yes! I saw that!”
“What is that?” They hurried their way.
Water bottles, cans, clothes, and… All kinds of things that were thrown away from the Antarctic station.
Quietly Ian went near, and lifted up the cloth. Very quietly.
“Paul!
Here you are!
The eggs that did not break were put in order, and the garbage bags from the base were piled over one place. Paul has been gathering litter from the station and built a tiny house, getting the eggs that were alive, and keeping them warm.
Ian and his friends headed over to the station riding a sled. They all took steps little by little… so that the eggs won’t be hurt. Their way home felt much farther than before.
“Shouldn’t we have a little break?” Someone said. “No way. The eggs may freeze. We are almost there.” Ian said.
“We must help Paul! The eggs will be frozen hard if we leave them here.” “Let’s move them to the station.” “If you do this, they won’t break.” Ian and his friends wrapped the eggs one by one, with thrown away bubble wrap.
“One, two, one, two.” Finally, Ian and his friends came back to the station. All the friends and all the crew moved the eggs inside together.
“Be careful!”
“Hey! Is this your first time to see a penguin egg?” The sled dogs came along to greet the unborn penguins.
“Now, we will start hatching our PENGUIN BABIES!”

“Take care of the ones that are ill.”
With Paul,
Ian also made nests with flour
and kept the eggs warm.
No one realized yet,
but
miracles were happening inside the eggs day by day.
Many times, the crew people fell asleep beside the eggs,
