Albuquerque To Host 2014 NCAA Men’s and Womens’s Division 1 Indoor Track & Field National Championship

lbuquerque, NM (November 27, 2012) – The Albuquerque Convention and Visitors Bureau (ACVB) is pleased to announce that Albuquerque, New Mexico will host the 2014 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Division I Indoor Track & Field National Championships.

The meet will take place March 13-15, 2014.

The University of New Mexico (UNM) Track & Field program will serve as the host institution with support from the ACVB and the City of Albuquerque. The City of Albuquerque introduced a 200-meter Mondo track in 2005 at the Albuquerque Convention Center. In the years since, it has served as UNM’s indoor facility, hosted three USA Indoor Track & Field Championships, two NCAA Division II Indoor Championships, and it will soon host the NCAA Indoor Championships, among many other high caliber track and field events.

Albuquerque to Host Far West Regional Soccer Tournament

lbuquerque, NM (December 2012) – The Albuquerque Convention and Visitors Bureau (ACVB) is pleased to announce that Albuquerque, New Mexico will host the 2014 Far West Regional Youth Soccer Tournament.

The US Youth Soccer tournament will take place June 14-22, 2014 with matches taking place at the State Farm Bernalillo Soccer Complex just north of Albuquerque.

The complex is home to 22 top-notch soccer fields along with two lighted championship fields with seating for 2,000 spectators.

The tournament is expected to generate more than 14,000 hotel room nights to be used by 19,000 players, coaches, parents and fans. The nine-day tournament is expected to generate nearly $5.7 million in direct spending in Albuquerque.

US Youth Soccer is a nationwide body with more 300,000 dedicated coaches and over 3,000,000 youth players ages 5-19. The organization is made up of 55 member state associations. The Far West Region is comprised of the 13 Western US states including Alaska and Hawaii.

“Albuquerque is a haven for soccer at all levels and the Far West Regional Tournament is another in a long line of desirable soccer events for this destination. It combines highly competitive soccer with substantial room nights and impactful levels of direct spending,” said Dan Ballou, Director of Sports Marketing at the Albuquerque Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Sandia Peak Ski Area Delays Opening Sandia Peak Ski Area will postpone the start of the 2012-2013 ski season. We were scheduled to open on December 15th, and will announce an opening date as soon as conditions allow.

Our snowmakers are working hard and we have had a tremendous start to this year’s snowmaking. We are hopeful for a great ski season, and with any significant snowfall we could be ready to open within 48 hours.

Getting Your Financial House In Order I

f you’re thinking—or just dreaming—about becoming a homeowner, before even setting foot on potential properties, it’s critical to make sure your financial house is in order.

Here are tips that can help: • Ensure that you can truly afford your home.

Take into account your entire financial picture.

A number of online tools can help you estimate the price of a home you can afford based on your income, debts and other obligations. For example, there’s Front Door’s affordability calculator at www.frontdoor.com. There are also mortgage calculators that can show you how a larger down payment can lower your monthly mortgage payment.

• Consider the positives—and the negatives— of homeownership. Homeowners can reap considerable benefits including tax breaks, home appreciation and the opportunity to build personal wealth. Today, home equity—the value of the house minus the balance owed— represents a large portion of a typical family’s wealth.

However, it’s important to remember that owning a home comes with a number of financial obligations. Having to replace a roof,

an appliance or something larger can cause considerable hardship if not properly planned for.

• Start building equity from day one. If you have a down payment of less than 20 percent, mortgage insurance is often necessary. This is typically obtained through either the governmentbacked Federal Housing Administration (FHA) or a private mortgage insurer. Private mortgage insurance is commonly used when putting at least 5 percent down, while FHA loans can require as little as 3.5 percent. While many first-time borrowers believe 3.5 percent is the better option, the added costs layered on top of the mortgage—in addition to recently increased FHA insurance premiums-are significantly more expensive than with a 5 percent down payment on a privately insured loan. By putting the 5 percent down, you can enter a home with more equity and build equity faster.

• Remember the additional costs of homeownership. These can include closing costs; homeowner’s insurance; city and county property taxes; utilities; and, if you buy in a planned subdivision or a condominium, homeowner’s association fees.

f you’ve ever regifted an item, you’re not alone. In fact, according to a recent national survey by Bookoo.com, nearly two-thirds of Americans have regifted items, and 92 percent think it’s completely acceptable to do so. While regifting is most popular during the holidays (62 percent), it is a common practice throughout the year with other popular times including: birthdays (58 percent), housewarming gifts (50 percent) and thank you gifts (39 percent).

Not surprisingly, people are least likely to regift during Valentine’s Day (8 percent) and anniversaries (8.5 percent), and they tend to most often regift items to friends (63 percent), neighbors (45 percent) and colleagues (34 percent). Spread Cheer, Not the Flu, Throughout the Winter T

he winter season with its many holidays is an important time for families to get together and share traditions among generations. Unfortunately, too often it is also a time to share colds and flu. While hygiene measures, such as covering coughs and sneezes, washing and disinfecting hands and frequently touched surfaces, and limiting contact with others when sick, can help reduce the spread of respiratory illness, when it comes to the flu, the best way to avoid infection is to get a flu shot.

No matter how healthy or youthful a senior may feel, the body’s immune system, and its ability to fight illness, weakens with age, making them more susceptible to the flu and its complications. In fact, an estimated 60 percent of flu-related hospitalizations each year occur in people 65 years and older. Flu can be especially dangerous for seniors with chronic medical conditions like heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or diabetes. Hospitalizations for these chronic conditions typically also increase during flu season.

Influenza viruses spread easily from person to person in droplets created when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk—from as far as 6 feet away. In addition, when people get the flu, they can pass the virus on to someone else before they even know they are sick. Flu symptoms typically don’t appear until one to four days after the virus enters the body. During this time, people may still spread the virus to others.

“Nationwide, 91 percent of adults 65 years of age and older have at least one chronic condition and 76 percent have two or more,” said Birkel. “So most older adults are not only at increased risk of influenza because of their age, they also have other factors increasing their risk of complications should they contract the flu.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends annual influenza vaccination for everyone 6 months of age and older. Since infants younger than 6 months of age cannot receive the flu vaccine, it is especially important for family members and caregivers to get immunized.

Adults 65 and older are also especially vulnerable to the complications of influenza, according to the National Council on Aging (NCOA), whose Flu + You initiative is educating seniors and their families about the risks of influenza and the importance of getting an annual flu shot.

“The NCOA knows how important the holidays are to older adults and their families,” said Rick Birkel, PhD, MPA, Senior Vice President of Healthy Aging, Director of the Self-Management Alliance at NCOA. “This is why we are urging families to take steps to help protect themselves from the flu.”

So while washing your hands can be beneficial, take the next step to help protect the whole family by getting a flu shot. It’s not too late. The peak of flu season occurs anywhere from late November through March. In fact, as long as influenza viruses are in circulation, even in the spring, it is beneficial to get vaccinated.

After immunization, it takes about two weeks for the vaccine to help protect against the virus.

This season, influenza vaccines are plentiful and widely available for all ages.

Adults 65 years and older have two vaccine options, says NCOA’s Birkel—the traditional flu shot and a higher-dose flu shot developed to address the natural weakening of the immune system that comes with age. Both flu vaccine options are covered in full by Medicare Part B for those 65 years and older with no copay and are available across the country at physicians’ offices, pharmacies and many other providers. School Attendance Matters N

early 7.5 million U.S. students are chronically absent every school year—missing enough school to put them at severe risk of dropping out or failing to graduate—but a new public service advertising (PSA) campaign aims to reverse this trend.

Research shows that students who attend school regularly in the early years are more likely to learn to read well by the critical 3rd grade milestone, score higher on standardized tests and graduate and go on to college than students who are chronically absent. Education is crucial to breaking the cycle of poverty, but chronic absenteeism is most prevalent among low-income students. Chronic absenteeism, which is defined as missing at least 10 percent of school days in a given year, or about 18 days, affects the educational outcomes of millions of students.

To help, the U.S. Army, through its partnership with the Ad Council, has created a new series of English- and Spanish-language PSAs asking parents of middle school students to remember the influence they have on their children’s attendance, reminding them that even one or two days missed each month of school can jeopardize their child’s chances of graduating.

“The U.S. Army recognizes the immense importance of having an educated public and is deeply committed to programs that benefit America’s youth,” said Mark Davis, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army.

Winter Driving And Tire Tips

onditions such as snow-covered roads and black ice can make winter driving unpredictable. The good news is that preparing early for winter weather and anticipating and avoiding dangerous circumstances can help drivers maintain control and stay safe on the road.

To help, here are some tips from the experts at Cooper Tire & Rubber Company.

• Drive cautiously: For starters, double the anticipated stopping distance when braking anytime conditions are not dry. It will take longer to come to a stop in snowy or icy conditions.

• Do not assume a four-wheel-drive vehicle will stop faster than a twowheel-drive vehicle-four-wheel drive offers no braking advantage.

• Always reduce speed during winter conditions.

• When purchasing winter tires, replace all four tires. Due to the different grip capabilities of summer, all-season and winter tires, the driver will not get all the handling and traction benefits if all tires are not replaced.

• Examine tread: The only part of a vehicle to touch the road is the tires, and tire tread is a vital part of handling, cornering, accelerating and braking.

• For winter weather driving, a general rule is the more tread depth, the better. A tire’s minimum tread depth should be more than 2/32 of an inch deep all around the tire. Drivers can check tread depth by using a U.S. penny. Insert the edge of the coin into the tread with Lincoln going in headfirst. If the top of his head is visible at any location on the tire, the tire is worn out and it’s time to replace it.

• While examining the tread, also look for signs of uneven wear or damage such as cuts, cracks, splits, punctures and bulges. These conditions shorten the life of tires and, if not corrected, further tire damage, tire failure or air loss may occur.

• Find tires made for the season. For example, Cooper Tire has been a proven winter tire brand for decades, providing high-performing and ex-

• Test air pressure: Tire pressure plays a critical role in the overall performance of tires. Underinflation creates excessive stress on the tire, while overinflation can cause uneven wear in addition to handling and braking issues.

• Tire pressure decreases by about one pound per square inch for every 10-degree drop in outside air temperature, so it is vital that drivers check the air pressure regularly as winter weather approaches.

• Drivers should follow the guidelines found in the vehicle owner’s manual or tire placard (or sticker) attached to the vehicle door edge to determine the correct air pressure for their vehicle’s tires. A common myth is that the tire pressure listed on the sidewall is the optimal pressure, while in reality it is the maximum pressure.

• Air pressure should be checked when the tires are cool, meaning they are not hot from driving even a mile.

• Should any of these checks reveal the need for required maintenance—or when in doubt about the condition of their tires—drivers should take vehicles to a tire dealer for a professional inspection.
