NEWS A fine year 2014 was a fine year for Fine & Country, with the opening of 42 offices, as well as the launch of a new department, Fine & Country Golf, and the creation of the Fine & Country Foundation. Fine & Country now has offices in more than 300 locations worldwide. In the UK, offices opened in areas including Bristol, Fulham, Padstow and Nottingham, and internationally, offices have opened in Russia, Portugal, Dubai and South Africa. Fine & Country’s international presence was further strengthened by the launch of Fine & Country Golf, with strategic partnerships with Troon Golf and European Tour Properties allowing for marketing and selling properties from an exclusive portfolio of elite golf developments around the globe. “The new venture represents an exciting step for Fine & Country. This is the first time we have specialised in golf real estate. We are seeing more people interested in not just buying a property but buying their dream lifestyle,” comments Robert O’Brien, Head of Fine & Country Golf. Fine & Country has also grown in terms of its charitable endeavours. The Fine & Country Foundation was launched to help combat one of the largest social issues in the UK – homelessness. Malcolm

Lindley, Managing Director of Fine & Country and a Trustee for the Foundation has set a goal of raising £1,000,000 in the first year. “We as a network have a social responsibility to help others and by combining the charitable efforts within the network, we can achieve great things,” Malcolm explains. Fine & Country has even bigger plans for 2015, with exciting new developments already in the pipeline.

Portuguese plans Fine & Country are extremely pleased to announce the opening of Fine & Country Chiado in February 2015. Located in the heart of Lisbon, Fine & Country Chiado joins the network of estate agents in over 300 locations worldwide, representing the brand’s expansion in Portugal. The new office will specialise in marketing, promotion and sale of luxury residential and tourist real estate in the areas of Greater Lisbon and Cascais and Estoril. There will also be focus on the promotion of the Portugal Golden Residency Permit to

non-EU nationals who are required to purchase a property in excess of €500,000 to qualify. Fine & Country Chiado, Lisbon will deal with the luxury end of the market in Chiado, Principe Real, the Baixa and Lapa. This includes individual villas and penthouse apartments ranging from €1,000,000 – €4,000,000, all within easy reach of the historic centre. Owners of the business, Charles Roberts and Nuno Durão, are launching the office in the wake of two successful years for Fine & Country Portugal. “The market has been very good for the past two years. This was primarily driven by the Golden Residency Permit and Portugal’s Non Habitual Residence Tax Laws that permit foreign applicants to have zero taxation on their pension and investment income,” says Durao. “The Fine & Country brand is becoming more established in Portugal every day with large offices in Estoril, Lisbon and three offices in the Algarve. We are moving our Lisbon office to bigger and better premises due to the success of the brand. We hope to be opening yet another new office in Comporta (Blue Coast), south of Lisbon, in March 2015 and a second Lisbon office in the latter half of 2015,” adds Roberts.

Foundation achievements Reflecting the goals of the Fine & Country Foundation, a team of eight staff from the Fine & Country Park Lane Head Office took part in Centrepoint’s annual Sleep Out event on 6 November. The event gives those involved an insight into some of the realities of homelessness, including the cold, damp, noise and sleep deprivation in a fundraising exercise that saw the team raise more than £3,000. Centrepoint will use these funds to support young homeless people in the UK and provide housing, education, healthcare and life skills. In addition to the sleep out, the annual Cambridge Christmas Carol Concert, organised by Fine & Country Cambridge, raised more than £1,500 for the Fine & Country Foundation. The money will be shared between three local homeless charities; Wintercomfort, Emmaus and Jimmy’s Cambridge. The event was held on 8 December at the Cambridge Union Society Debating Chambers. The concert was sponsored by local businesses including Beauwater, Langham Press and Marshall, and Fine & Country Cambridge served guests complimentary mince pies and mulled wine as part of the festivities. The Cambridge Christmas Carol Concert is now in its third year. More than 200 people attended to enjoy the musical talents of the Fairhaven singers. Under Musical

ore than a decade ago, I spent Hogmanay in Glasgow. It’s immediately apparent that the city has undergone some significant change on this visit. Even Glasgow Central Station looks unfamiliar, after its 2010 expansion. With yellow sunlight filtering through the glass roof, the stunning old building evokes a nostalgic image of the heyday of rail travel, despite its contemporary elements. Central Station Glasgow was opened in 1879 and the adjacent Grand Central Hotel came shortly after in 1883. Originally designed by Robert Rowand Anderson in Queen Anne style, with its picturesque details, intricate gables and multi-paned windows, the hotel has undergone a multi-million pound restoration, and its plush lobby beckons. The Grand Central Hotel took its place in history as the venue to which the world’s first long-distance television pictures were transmitted on 24 May 1927, by John Logie Baird. The soaring ceilings certainly instill a sense of grandeur as does the Hollywood guest list – Laurel and Hardy, Frank Sinatra and Roy Rogers have all laid their heads here. My friend Darryl and I are soon to join them.

Our corner suite is light and bright and I’m tempted to fill the clawfoot tub with bubble bath and while away the afternoon there, but Glasgow is calling. The winter days are not long enough for us to dally, so we abandon our unpacking and head outside. It’s chilly, but the sky is a deep blue and the sun is casting a warm glow over this historic city.

We pause for a moment at the Citizen Firefighter statue directly outside the hotel’s entrance. The somewhat intimidating bronze statue stands as a symbol of recognition for firefighters past and present. Leaving our hero to protect the hotel, we follow the curves of the station to the large glass-walled bridge nicknamed Hielanman's [Highlandman’s] Umbrella.

The following morning again dawns bright and sunny. After a generous breakfast at The Grand Central Hotel, we stroll to the banks of the River Clyde. More than 70 bridges crisscross the river

During the Highland clearances in the 19th century, 30,000 Highlanders came to Glasgow to find work. They often met under the bridge, mostly at weekends. The moniker came from this, paired with the city's inclement weather. Today, underneath the umbrella is a bustling array of shops and bars that could keep any Highlander entertained.

We wander through the city, following whim and fancy with no particular destination in mind. As the sun begins to fade, we find ourselves at the medieval Glasgow Cathedral. Technically, it’s not really a cathedral, but the title is honorific and deservedly so. The history of the cathedral is linked with that of the city, and allegedly it is on the spot where the patron saint of Glasgow, Saint Mungo, built his church. After a circuit of the impressive façade, the final beams of daylight peek past the grey stone spire and we take our leave, ready for a bite to eat and a night of stand-up comedy in lilting Glaswegian accents.

from the estuary to its source and our walk of discovery takes us past several. Few are known locally by their proper names. The Tradeston pedestrian bridge, an interesting modern construction formed of two angled triangles, is known as the Squiggly Bridge. The Clyde Arc, a curved dome that hints of the Gateway Arch in St Louis, Missouri, is known as the Squinty Bridge, likely due to its angular path across the river. Bell’s Bridge, on the other hand, is named for the Bell's & Sons whisky company, who sponsored its construction. It seems fitting that whisky should be linked with the construction of Glasgow.

This section of the river is particularly picturesque. The disused Finnieston Crane, a giant cantilever crane that is retained as a symbol of the city's engineering heritage, looms over the water, just along the bank from the Clyde Auditorium. It’s not hard to see why the Auditorium is known as The Armadillo, although its arches were in fact inspired by an interlocking series of ship's hulls, in reference to the Clyde's shipbuilding heritage. The SSE Hydro performance arena nearby looks for all the world like an alien spacecraft, hunkering on a circle of grass. On the opposite bank, the bulbous crescent of the Glasgow Science Centre reflects the sun on its titanium-clad frame and the squat, oblong BBC Scotland building mirrors The Armadillo in a perfect reflection on its windows.

From here, it’s a mile’s walk to the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, housing one of Europe's great art collections. Before we start, we grab a bite at the KG Café in the Museum’s basement. The building is as impressive as the collection, built in a Spanish Baroque style, and following the Glaswegian tradition of using Locharbriggs red sandstone. It is immense, and wandering its 8,000 exhibits takes us all the way to dinner. In the Tempus Restaurant at The Grand Central Hotel, over heaped bowls of hearty Wild Boar Bolognese, we consider our plans for the evening. Glasgow’s nightlife has much to offer, but so does The Grand Central Hotel, and it’s the hotel that wins. The end of the evening sees us sipping cocktails at the Tempus Bar overlooking the station concourse, as we plan our next trip to Glasgow. n

ike any world-class sport, polo has developed particular etiquette and fashions for both participants and spectators. With a lengthy history that spans a range of countries, the terminology and culture surrounding the sport are rich and varied. There are four players on each side, all with specified roles either attacking or defending. The game is divided into six chukkas with each lasting 7 minutes with a 3 minute interval in-between. The term chukka originated in India from the word for a circle, or a round. During the interval the players change horses, which are always referred to as ponies. Originally, no horse higher than thirteen hands and two inches (54 inches) was allowed in play. This restriction no longer exists, but the term pony is still used – not because of the size or specific breed of the horses but because of their agility. The game is played on an expansive grassed area up to 300 yards (274 metres) long by 160 yards (146 metres) wide. This equates to approximately nine football fields. Ponies cover one to two miles during a chukka, hence the need to change ponies, to provide rest and recovery time. Given the size of the ground and the speed at which the game is played, spectators find binoculars useful.

Like many polo traditions, the wearing of white trousers can be traced back to India, where the game was played by nobility and later introduced to British army officers stationed there in the 19th century. Competing in the intense heat, players preferred clothing that was light in both weight and colour. Jodhpurs, the tailored riding britches still worn by many players, took their name from the Indian state of Jodhpur. Inspired by traditional pants worn by Indian grooms called churidars, they were flared at the hip coming to a tight fit at the knees and down to the ankle. Before the invention of stretch fabric, these jodhpurs were very practical, allowing the wearer to have movement in the hips and comfort from the knee to ankle when sitting down. Pratap, the son of the Maharaja of Jodhpur and an enthusiastic polo player, is attributed with the introduction of this style when he arranged for the tailoring of riding trousers for a champion polo team that visited England in 1897 for Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee celebration. The trousers had leather patches on the inside leg for protection from the saddle. Pratap was military assistant to the Prince of Wales (later King Edward) who was an equestrian devotee and a dedicated follower of fashion and may have been responsible for further increasing the popularity of the britches. As with other sports clothing, the style was incorporated into fashionable street-wear beyond the practical use. Even early Hollywood directors took to wearing jodhpurs on set. The polo shirt achieved even more popularity as a fashion statement, well beyond its practical application. Again, the exact origins of the shirt are not known. The distinctive element of the button-down collar, which prevented it flapping in the faces of players, was initially developed by British polo enthusiasts in India. On a visit to England, John E. Brooks noted the buttondown collars worn by polo players and took the idea back to the US where it was incorporated into the Brooks Brothers dress shirts. This style of shirt was introduced in 1896 and achieved instant popularity.

The dress code for spectators varies according to the venue; however it tends to begin from the feet up. Given that grass will most likely be underfoot, stilettos, which tend to sink into the ground, are certainly not the wisest choice. Added to this is the custom of inviting the public onto the field at half time to stomp the divots made by the ponies.

There is an important practical use for this convention, as it repairs the field for the second half of the match. In earlier times the job was done by paid labourers who tapped in the divots using a large malletstyle tool. It is unclear when and where the custom of free labour was introduced, but it has been made more famous by its inclusion in the film Pretty Woman.

The next evolution of the shirt occurred with the development of pique cotton technology, a style of weaving that increased durability and breathability. It was, however, the tennis player Lacoste, who married the design with the material to produce a garment that created a sensation when he wore it in the US Open in 1926. It was Ralph Lauren, however, who ensured that the polo-shirt name was inextricably tied to the garment when he used the brand name Polo for a line of casual wear in which the polo shirt was a prominent inclusion.
