Just 205 entries – from a record 12,777 – were deemed to be at the top 3-star level by Great Taste judges.
The robustness of almost everything has been challenged this year by COVID-19 and the Guild of Fine Food’s well-established food accreditation scheme was no exception. For almost three decades, Great Taste and its rigorous judging system has been unearthing the best food and drink in the UK and beyond. In the process, it has nurtured budding small producers with feedback (whether they win an award or not) and given the country’s independent retailers and restaurants inspiration and a point of difference. As you flick through the pages of this magazine, you’ll notice that some of this year’s top judges have offered their takes on what makes the scheme so special. When lockdown was decreed in March, though, the mammoth judging task had only just begun and the Guild still had some 12,000 products to get through – without the venues and judges needed to assess them. In early May, a remote judging system was established, with tasters working from home and sharing their experiences over Zoom, before the Guild got back into the judging rooms – at its London offices and Dorset HQ – in early July to tackle more entries. Due to social distancing requirements, there were fewer experts in each room, so the food was passed through more teams to ensure that the judging criteria were met and that allimportant feedback was provided. Remarkably, in the space of just 14 weeks, a record number of entries (12,777) from more than 100 different countries was assessed. In total, 3,818 products were awarded a 1-star, while 1,294 received a 2-star and just 205 were deemed to be at the level of 3-star. And it is that very top tier that this publication focuses on. You’ll find every single one of those 3-star items in this publication and – thanks to a herculean effort from everyone involved in 2020 – you can be assured that all of them have earned that award.
