Give Creatively with Donor-advised Funds Americans are generous and contribute billions of dollars to charity each year, using a variety of methods. One creative way of gifting is through a donor-advised fund, a separately identified fund or account that is maintained and operated by a section 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Donor-advised funds, which offer immediate tax benefits, are becoming increasingly attractive option for individuals, families and organizations looking for alternatives to direct giving or private foundations. With more than $25.2 billion in assets and over 152,000 account holders in 2009, according to the National Philanthropic Trust, donor-advised funds are the fastest growing charitable giving vehicle in the U.S. Donor-advised funds are usually offered by foundations, mutual fund groups, other financial firms and universities, who often partner with a charity on the offering. By working through the public charity administrating the donoradvised fund, donors make irrevocable contributions to the fund, which then invests the money in an account the donor creates from a list of different mutual funds. Individuals can contribute to the account cash or appreciated assets, such as securities, cash or real estate. Next, the donors make a recommendation, if they choose, on the grants the fund will issue to charity. The donor can also specify that the income and/or principal from the fund be available for distribution to charity. While donors can recommend which charities should receive contributions, the fund makes the actual grants. The benefits of donor-advised funds The benefits donors receive from using donor-advised funds include the ability to donate a wide variety of assets, an immediate tax deduction, flexible grantmaking and the opportunity to create a legacy. The charitable assets can also be passed on to future generations to oversee and/or can be given directly to charitable organizations Another advantage of donor-advised funds is that the donor does not incur the cost of establishing and administering a private foundation, making donor-advised funds appealing for people giving less than $1 million. Many donor-advised funds require a minimum contribution of $5,000 or $10,000, and some funds may require a larger upfront contribution, whereas a private foundation can cost $500,000 or more to establish. Since the contributions are being made to a public charity, the donor receives an immediate tax deduction, including a deduction for a cash donation of up to 50% of the donor’s adjusted gross income (AGI), or a deduction for securities and other appreciated assets of up to 30% of their AGI. Moreover, donors can avoid capital gains taxes on gifts of appreciated property and estate taxes, helping the investment in the fund grow tax-free. When contributing assets to donor-advised funds, a donor can potentially give more to charity and pay less in taxes. The following example demonstrates the tax and giving advantages of contributing appreciated assets to a donor-advised fund. “Covering” The Shot Most good players have a good idea what “Covering” the shot means in golf. Covering the shot means getting the right side to work properly through the swing. It’s more of an “Around-the-body” swing than most people think. By “around”, I mean away from the intended line (like a tennis forehand). For a right-handed player, the right side is the power side in golf. For golfers, a right-handed player must get the left side out of the way, so that the right side can power through to finish. To accomplish this action, I keep my right side “high” at impact. The tendency for almost every one of us is to go down at the ball rather than around. No dipping!

Notice the set-up position at address and where the hands and shoulders are. What I want to do is return to that position at impact with the hands and right shoulder. Of course, my body is in action during impact, so a lot of things are going on with the rest of my body. But, the “impact position” should somewhat resemble the “address” position with the hands and right shoulder as illustrated.

The tendency for most of us is to go after the ball with the right shoulder moving “down” toward the ball. As you can observe, the right shoulder gets down alright, but where does it go from here? Actually…nowhere, and you are now stuck. You can see this happening in the second impact photo, which is not only incorrect, but can also be painful on the back.

The correction is shown here as the “Good Impact” illustration. Just have the whole right side glide through, stay as high as you can with the right shoulder while the left shoulder turns left. Hips, hands, and arms will follow through naturally as long as the left side just gets out of the way, and will allow you to have a proper finish. The finish is easy as long as the right side stays high and “covers” the shot. Ask your pro next time about this, I’m sure he will agree that you must be able to “cover” the shot to hit a “better” shot. Good luck, and good golfing.

Median Home Prices Increase 17% in March ’13 Median Home price increased from $184,000 to $215,000 (march ‘12 - March ‘13) Naples, FL (April 12, 2013) - The Naples area overall median home price increased 17 percent for the 12 months that ended in March 2013, according to a report released by the Naples Area Board of REALTORS® (NABOR®), which tracks home listings and sales within Collier County (excluding Marco Island).

Overall pending sales increased 22 percent in the $300,000 to $500,000 category from 1,414 units to 1,729 units; 13 percent in the $500,000 to $1 million category, from 1,052 units to 1,190 units; increased 18 percent in the $1 million to $2 million category, from 452 units to 532 units; and increased 12 percent in the $2 million plus category, from 277 units to 310 units, respectively for the 12-month period ending March 2013. • The average DOM (Days on the Market) decreased 8 percent overall from 171 days in March 2012 to 157 days in March 2013. • Inventory decreased 14 percent from 7,599 units in March 2012 to 6,565 units in March 2013.

InterviewQ&A Fine: Where were you born, where did you grow up? What was your hometown like? Todd Turrell: I grew up in Upper Arlington, a suburb of Columbus, Ohio. My dad was a dentist and Professor of Dentistry at Ohio State. I really wanted to be Jacques Cousteau, but that’s kind of hard to do in Columbus so I went to college in Florida and studied Ocean Engineering and Marine Biology. Fine: Where have you lived in the US, the world, etc? Todd Turrell: I have lived in Florida for well over 30 years, first in Boca Raton while attending FAU (Florida Atlantic University), then in Naples since 1981. While Naples is my primary home, I spend a lot of time in the Bahamas where our firm works and we play (about 30 trips a year, believe it or not). Thank goodness for our fast, little plane and the new Customs facility at the Naples airport. Fine: Where did you go to school and what was your major? Todd Turrell: After earning my Ocean Engineering

degree I went back to school for an MBA from Nova University while working as an Engineer. Fine: What was your first job out of school and what is the history of how you got into the marine and environmental consulting business? Todd Turrell: When graduating from FAU I had to choose between a few different job offers, one in the offshore oil industry like many Ocean Engineers, one as co-pilot for a small private jet I had some experience on while teaching flying in Boca Raton, and finally the job I took in Naples as an Ocean Engineer. Fine: When did you move to Naples and why? Todd Turrell: I moved to Naples in 1981 and worked as engineer until I was certified as a PE (Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Florida). I started my own business in 1988 offering Marine and Environmental consulting services. Fine: What does Turrell, Hall & Associates actually do as a business? What are some of your past projects?


Todd Turrell: Our firm provides Marine and Environmental consulting services in Florida, the Bahamas and the Caribbean at large with experience on other projects around the world. Our Marine work includes anything in the sea or along the coast. We design docks and marinas and help manage and maintain waterfront projects as they are built and age. My partners Tim Hall and Marielle Kitchener are Biologists and manage the environmental side of the business along with a staff of young biologists/engineers who grew up in Naples. We work on land and in the sea, assessing habitats and trying to balance the impacts of development or public works with nature. We have an excellent team that works with State, Federal and local agencies to address issues and permit the activities of man in the environment. Projects have included permitting and design aspects of many of the marinas and docking facilities around Naples and Marco, various residential and commercial developments, the Naples Botanical Gardens, the Pelican Bay mangrove preserve and work on Everglades restoration in the Picayune Strand State Forest. Island projects have included the Winding Bay golf course and club in the Abacos, the Albany marina and golf course community in Nassau, Government plans for ports and safe harbors in the southern Bahamas and many, many private island facilities. Fine: What are some of your current and future projects? I know that your map business is a somewhat new venture, how did that come about and how is it going? Todd Turrell: Our map project is indeed new and arose from clients wanting to blow up maps we did in reports for them. I collect antique maps of the Caribbean and Florida going back to the 1600s and was sad there just weren’t maps made anymore you would want to hang on your wall. There are road maps, navigation maps and tourist maps, but we wanted to make a modern, colorful map of our coast just like they did in the old days. Why do you call this home? Todd Turrell: Naples has always been a nice clean place to live. I have friends come from all over the world and they always marvel at how tidy things are around here. I can also jump in the plane and be in the Bahamas or the Keys in less than an hour, which we do frequently.

Fine: What are some of your hobbies or what do you like to do in your free time? Todd Turrell: I guess my primary hobbies are world travel, exploration of the most remote areas of the Bahamas and I write. Our book on Naples Waterfront history has been well received and I’m working on another one or two good ones. Fine: Do you have any favorite local fishing spots? Todd Turrell: I used to fish in the 10,000 islands constantly, but the last decade or so we have concentrated in the Bahamas where we keep a “liveaboard” dive and exploration vessel. Fine: What are some of your favorite restaurants here in Naples? What are some of your favorite food items to order at those places? Todd Turrell: I love seafood and Italian. Cosmos is my favorite Italian spot where I love the soups and live for the Osso Buco Ravioli! Pelican Bend in Isles of Capri is my favorite, simple seafood spot (best grouper sandwich around). My girlfriend and I went to the Blue Heron, also in Isles of Capri, for her birthday. She had the Cioppino and I had lobster sautéed with mushrooms and shallots and put back in the shell - both were fabulous. Fine: I know Naples feels like paradise and people come here for vacation, but do you have any favorite vacation spots? Todd Turrell: We spend a great deal of time in the Bahamas, which is kind of my second home and I guess our favorite. We travel the world looking for our next favorite, from Europe to New Zealand, South America and even Russia and Asia - we’re still looking! Fine: What advice could you give to other business owners and entrepreneurs? Todd Turrell: Be prepared to work long, thankless hours in the first few years and always be truthful and honest to a fault. Fine: Do you have any favorite local charities in Naples? Todd Turrell: We support many, such as the Naples Equestrian Challenge and Liberty Youth Ranch.

Hurricane Preparedness Checklist What is Truly Important to You? If you were told that you had one hour to prepare your home for a hurricane and leave the area, what would you do? What would you take with you? What is irreplaceable? Is your home hurricane-ready and do you have an exit strategy? This article is the first of a three-part series on preparing for an emergency. The second article will cover financial documents that are essential to secure in case of an emergency, and the third article will address your Health Care Emergency Plan. The President of the United States has a “satchel” or briefcase referred to as “The Football.” It carries the nuclear war plan. While our important papers and memorabilia may not be quite as important as the secrets held inside the president’s briefcase, we do have certain essential and irreplaceable items. So, the exercise laid out here will walk you through the steps you should take to prepare for an emergency. This checklist deals with Hurricane preparedness. Enjoy and be prepared! 1. Make a list of all the steps that you will have to take to secure your home. There are two distinct plans: One is to be prepared to ride out a milder storm, and the other is to plan for the worst. Here we are talking about a true evacuation. The physical steps to secure your home are readily available. Check out the Florida Emergency evacuation plan at www. colliergov.net and prepare your home. Some of the more obvious steps can be located at www.ready.gov/hurricanes 2. Make a list of all of your important financial papers. While we suggest you have a backup in the “cloud,” this is not common at this time. So, using old-school technology, make a copy of all your important legal and personal papers (which we will expand on in Part II) and keep those copies in one place (your “football”). 3. Make a list of the most important items that you would take with you if you had to leave in an emergency. Example: Family photos (do you have a back-up copy on your computer that is backed up in the “cloud?”). Obviously, you are not going to grab your 50-inch Plasma TV and your oriental rug, however grandma’s broche or grandpa’s cufflinks may be on your very short list. Other items might include your child’s first art project. At least store a copy on your computer and back up your computer to a hard drive. 4. Make sure you have a backup to your computer and that you take the backup with you. External hard drives are readily available or, as an alternative, backup you data on a large thumb drive. There are several helpful websites such as www. sugarsync.com available to assist you in this endeavor. 5. Make a list: Important action steps in physically preparing for a hurricane can be located at www.floridadisaster.org/documents/ EmergencyKit-FDEM.pdf and www.floridadisaster.org . Make a plan in advance to ensure you, and your family, are protected during and after the storm.

Naples Market First quarter 2013 posted impressive numbers. Consider closed sales in the $750,000 to $1,000,000 range increased 67% through February with 30 closings vs. just 18 a year ago.

Presently, available inventory in the combined Naples, Bonita Springs, Estero market stands at 6,649, a six month supply based on closings over the past 12 months.

Not to be outdone, the greater than $1M segment racked up 107 closings during this year’s first two months, a 14% increase over the same period 2012. In addition, year-to-date pended sales greater than a million are up 47%. Not too shabby, as the saying goes.
