FINE: Tell us a little about yourself and your background. Kim: I’m a single mom of four boys ages 24, 23, 20 and 17, and a grandma to baby Aydan. My family is my life. I love teaching children to swim! I’ve enjoyed doing Cross Fit for 3 years along with triathlons. FINE: How did you get started in swimming and becoming a swim instructor? Kim: I started working at the Collier County YMCA in 1986 and that’s when I started teaching swim lessons. I was 18 years old and had some awesome role models, like Beth Blackman and Barb Fisher, who taught me so much. I fell in love with teaching and haven’t stopped since. I started my own business in 2001. It was a good move for me! Being a single mom with four boys, I could make my own schedule and still be there for my boys. FINE: What makes you stand out from other instructors and techniques? Kim: I think every instructor has his/her own way of teaching. I really love what I do. It is so rewarding to see a child, who is scared of the water when you first meet them, begin to love the water a month or two later. I am a loving but firm instructor. FINE: I would call you a concierge swim instructor. You will meet at any pool for your students and parents – whatever is most convenient for them. Kim: Yes, I will come to them making sure that I cater to their schedule. I think learning how to swim at a young age is important and I will drive all over Collier County to help kids learn this skill. FINE: What age groups do you teach? Kim: I start teaching children at 6 months old and up from there.
FINE: What do you love about Naples? Do you have any favorite places to eat, shop or any favorite outdoor spots? Kim: I love the climate because I do not like being cold! I don’t really have a favorite place to eat. I like cooking at home, but I do like Texas Tony’s. For shopping, I enjoy the outlet stores. There is so much I enjoy about the outdoors - swimming, biking, running or just being at the beach. FINE: What would you say is the most important thing to learn in swimming? Kim: To be safe! Teach your children to love the water at a young age and to be safe. Very, very, important!!
FINE: Do you have any idea how many kids you have taught over the years? Kim: Wow! When I am giving swimming lessons to the children of the parents I have already taught, I guess you can say I have taught a lot of children!! 1. Get CPR Certified and take First Aid classes.
Kim’s Rules For Parents:
2. Have a safety gate put in around your pool and have alarms on all your doors. 3. Always keep an eye on your children. It only takes a second for them to get out of your sight. 4. Never leave children alone by the pool, even children who can swim. Remember, a child can slip in the pool and hit their head. 5. Teach your children how to swim at a young age. THEY CAN DO IT!! 6. Have fun at the beach and pool this summer and BE SAFE!

I had a chance to meet Lexie at Tony’s off Third and taste some of her amazing creations! She is very gifted at baking and she is a fantastic person as well! With summer and wedding season upon us, Lexie will be very busy and her cakes and delectable creations are sure to please!
interview by corrie ritz photos by Sammy Duffy Photography FINE: Do you have a favorite cake? Lexie: I vividly remember the bride each cake was made for, and the vision she wanted to create. The fun part is figuring out how I am going to translate that into an edible work of art! My favorite cakes are any with sugar flowers or lots of filigree piping work. Even though they take a lot of time, I love the detail required for both of those techniques. FINE: What about flavors? Which is your favorite? Lexie: How can I choose?! I love red velvet with cream cheese frosting, or sea-salt caramel cake! YUM! We offer over 20 different flavor combinations. Often times, people will do each tier of their cake as a different flavor!
FINE: Tell us a little about yourself and your background. Lexie: I can describe myself in three words: Joyful, Creative, and Positive. I moved to Florida about two and a half years ago from Michigan, and boy am I glad I did!! Especially after the terrible winter everyone had up North this year! I first learned to bake from my grandmother, Miriam. She taught me that the best part of baking is being able to share your creations with the people you love! Who doesn’t appreciate a delicious handmade treat? FINE: I have seen your cakes and treats up close and tasted them!! They are pieces of art, but edible and oh so good! Did you go to school for baking or are you self-taught? Lexie: THANK YOU! I have so much fun making each and every one of them! I graduated from the Baking and Pastry program at The Secchia Institute for Culinary Education in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I learned so much from the instructors there about the foundations of baking and the precision required for each recipe to turn out perfectly. Since then, I’ve taught myself about sugar work and decorating. Like anything, it takes lots and lots of practice. My first cake was NOT pretty, but my family was eager to taste test anything I made, no matter how lopsided it may have been.
FINE: How many cakes do you make a week/month? Lexie: Now that wedding season is here, I can make up to four custom cakes on any given weekend. We always have dozens of orders for birthday and celebration cakes that come with our signature decorations that you can find in our bakery. FINE: You must enjoy your job?! You are always so helpful and cheerful! Lexie: What’s not to LOVE? I work with a wonderful team and I have such creative freedom! I am so grateful for my job and I truly enjoy going into work every single day! FINE: What do you love about Naples? Favorite places to eat, shop, etc? Lexie: Besides everything? This town is unbelievable! I love all of the art shows, festivals, and entertainment that seem to always be taking place! The view at Bayside at Venetian Village is spectacular, so I eat there quite a bit! Their crispy Mahi-Mahi is out this world!

(April 17, 2014) – Million dollar home sales in Naples continue to skyrocket with the $2 million and above single family home market increasing 83 percent from 48 sales in the first quarter of 2013 to 88 sales in the first quarter of 2014, according to the 2014 First Quarter Market Report released by the Naples Area Board of REALTORS® (NABOR®), which tracks home listings and sales within Collier County (excluding Marco Island). Overall closed sales increased 5 percent from 2,237 in the first quarter of 2013 to 2,352 in the first quarter of 2014. However, closed sales in all price categories above $300,000 increased by double digits with the $2 million and above price category experiencing the highest increase of 80 percent from 61 sales in the first quarter of 2013 to 110 sales in the first quarter of 2014. Overall, homes in the $300,000 and below price category realized the biggest median closed price adjustment from $159,000 in the first quarter of 2013 to $173,000 in the first quarter of 2014, which reflected a 9 percent increase. “The Naples area housing market does not appear to be slowing down,” said Pitocchi. “REALTORS are busy; especially agents who are showing homes priced over $1 million. In addition, for the first quarter of 2014, cash sales are continuing to dominate the market as shown by sales of 74 percent versus financed sales of 26 percent.” Inventory in all price ranges has continued to decline. In the first quarter of 2014 there were 4,405 available properties, a 14 percent decrease from the 5,136 available during the same quarter last year. As reflected in the statistics, the tight supply and high demand of homes is not triggering dramatic price increases. The median closed price in the price segments above $300,000 increased 9 percent from $540,000 in the first quarter of 2013 to $590,000 in the first quarter 2014. The NABOR® 2014 First Quarter Report provides comparisons of single-family home and condominium sales (via the Southwest Florida MLS), price ranges, and geographic segmentation and includes an overall market summary. The NABOR® First Quarter 2014 sales statistics are presented in chart format, including these overall (single-family and condominium) findings: • Overall closed sales increased 5 percent from 2,237 sales in the first quarter 2013 to 2,352 sales in the first quarter of 2014. • The overall median closed price increased 15 percent from $230,000 in the first quarter 2013 to $265,000 in the first quarter 2014. The overall median closed price of homes $300,000 and under increased 9 percent from $159,000 in the first quarter 2013 to $173,000 in the first quarter 2014.

List your home with a REALTOR® who can help you price it correctly and it will likely sell quickly,” said Pitocchi.

Don’t Get Stuck in “The Box”
( B e S u re t o O b t a i n Yo u r H o m e o w n e r s I n s u r a n c e B e f o re H u r r i c a n e S e a s o n ) Don’t get stuck in “The Box” refers to the “Hurricane Box.” From the beginning of Hurricane Season, June 1st, through the end of Hurricane Season, November 30th, it will be difficult, if not impossible, to buy certain insurance coverage for the peril of Windstorm or Hurricane damage (as well as other insurance coverage). If a named Tropical Storm or Hurricane enters an approximately 16,000 sq. mile box extending over Florida and the adjacent states and well into the Atlantic Ocean, then the insurance companies will suspend binding coverage. This occurrence is also referred to as “The Storm is in the Box.” Each insurance company may have their own definition of “The Box.” One thing is for sure, if you live in Florida or you are about to buy a house during Hurricane Season, you are inside “The Box.” Note: The restriction also applies when a tropical storm or hurricane watch or warning has been issued by the National Hurricane Center. Action Steps to Avoid the Box: If you are purchasing a new home or revising your existing Homeowners Insurance, then it is essential to avoid “The Box.” Simply put, insurance companies do not want to extend homeowners insurance to you immediately before a hurricane (and expose themselves to
