FINE: Tell us about yourselves, your backgrounds, and where you are from? Where have you lived in the country or are you originally from Florida? Tell us about your education or your work/professional background?
where on the east coast. We fell in love with the natural beauty of Southwest Florida and came back every year afterwards. Finally, we moved fulltime in 1997, started Richlin Interiors in 1999, then (Rebranded) Richlin International in 2008.
Maxine: We are both from Western Pennsylvania. I was an engineering technician for a large public utility for 18 years working in the engineering and construction department. After raising a family and before moving to Florida, I returned to school and earned a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design and Housing from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. We moved to Florida in 1997, and I then worked in the design community of southwest Florida while pursuing my certification from National Council of Interior Design Qualification, NCIDQ. In 1999 I became licensed as a registered interior designer by The Florida Board of Architecture and Interior Design. The same year I founded Richlin Interiors, a full-service interior design firm serving commercial and residential clients in both Florida and Pennsylvania. Loving the new environment that we had just moved to, I immediately expanded my knowledge base to include building solutions for the fragile and sensitive environment that we live in. I am a LEED (Leadership in Energy Efficient Design) accredited professional with a specialty in building and design, LEED AP, BD+C. Sensitive to the area’s rapidly changing demographics including the Baby Boomers…. I acquired the designation of Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) sanctioned by The National Association of Home Builders, (NAHB). During my tenure as 2008 President of American Society of Interior Designers, Florida South Chapter, Rich came on board to oversee field installations and found a niche for himself in our organization. Fast forward to rebranding to Richlin International (see below) shortly afterwards, I earned my Master of Science in Interior Architecture from Chatham University and started yet another endeavor in academia; teaching design at the university level. It has become a passion of mine.
FINE: What services do you offer and what makes Richlin unique or sets it apart from other similar companies?
FINE: How and when did you first start Richlin Interiors, and when did you change to Richlin International? What made you choose Naples Florida for your location? Maxine: In 1983 I had experienced a life altering automobile accident in PA and was out of commission for almost six months. Friends of ours offered their condominium for a three-week reprieve before my return to work. We had never heard of Marco Island, but thought it may be a great opportunity to hit the “reset” button on our lives. We were planning to move to Florida when our son went to college…. but thought it would be some-
Maxine & Richard: Over the years Richlin had specified many products from European manufacturers and eventually these manufacturers wanted a presence in this geographical area and courted us for several years to take on distributorships and dealerships for Florida. They were eager to place these products with representatives that had a working knowledge of the manufacturing and service of high end luxury products……..all at the same time that the housing bust hit. UGH. On the bright side, the trends in the U.S. had shifted to sleek contemporary lines; however most manufacturers in the United States and Canada were tooled up for only traditional profiles. “Modern” lines in the Italian design could be procured through purchasing hubs such as High Point, N.C. but the product was actually made in Asia in the “Italian Style.” This country has traditionally stayed within the lines of traditional and transitional, so these imported products were the only options for the consumer and design community. As an entrepreneur that quickly built the Richlin International brand, Rich continues to maintain an alliance with global manufacturers of only the highest product quality and service histories. He has formed relationships with manufacturers that aim at successfully delivering products for the housing sector faster, better, and more competitively than the South Florida industry counterparts. We had already owned commercial properties in Naples and our first location was a stand alone building in which we opened our first location showcasing luxury kitchens, bathrooms, closets, lighting, and closets. Maxine’s job was the interaction with clients, programming, schematic, and design development. Rich and I were both involved in contract administration along with great employees that we were very fortunate to have. Rich took over as orders were processed, shipped from Europe…mostly Italy…then project management and quality control for installation and post occupancy evaluation. FINE: You are also an exclusive distributor of several very popular and contemporary brands, can you tell us about those products?

FOSCARINI TWIGGY Maxine & Richard: Most of our lines are currently leading players on the international furniture scene. The manufacturers search for quality by constant updating the designs in keeping with all that is good in contemporary lifestyle trends. A perfect example of this constant conscientious query are the efforts by brilliant designers and architects that create for Poliform. The Poliform collection is set out as a wide diversified choice and includes systems and furnishing accessories for the whole house: bookcases, complements, wardrobes, beds, kitchens, sofas and armchairs. All finishes and color schemes flow from room to room. Poliform’s comprehensive production range carries with it the design idea of a ‘Poliform house’ with stylistically compatible component parts; a ‘global project’ for each architectural situation thanks to the exceptional versatility of its modular systems. FINE: You are celebrating 20 Years of being in business, congratulations! What was Richlin’s original core business model and how has that changed or grown over the last 20 years? Maxine & Richard: We started out as a full service commercial and residential Interior Design firm. We worked directly with clients such as home and business owners. After acquiring territorial exclusivity for our products, we morphed into a trade service working with architects, designers, builders, developers, etc. As Richlin International team members, we now assist these industry partners in fulfilling the requests of their clients and end users. FINE: Do you have any announcements, changes, and plans for the near future? Maxine & Richard: In addition to another location soon to be announced, we’ll soon be offering a new line of high-end innovative contemporary office interiors suitable for home or office in 2020. We are collaborating with an Italian manufacturer to give shape to workspaces, transforming everyday objects into functional components that are capable of eliciting emotion.
FINE: What are some of your favorite things about Naples and why you like living and having a business here? Maxine & Richard: The residents are very committed to making Naples a great place to live and work. It is so exciting to see how fast it is growing, but at the same time there is a place for everyone. Naples and The Greater Collier County Area take care of their fellow citizens. Great place to have a business, raise a family, and make lifelong friends! FINE: What are some of your favorite things to do in Naples? Maxine & Richard: Boating and Eating! FINE: What are some of your favorite restaurants in town and do you have any favorite food items? What are some of your favorite restaurants? Maxine & Richard: We are Vegans and love to cook and entertain at home. End users that entertain at home are very exciting to us!!! We love to procure products we have tested and share the joy of an environment in which they can entertain in an individual signature style. TAX TIPS FOR DEALING WITH YOUR RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS
Roth it? Really? —— Should I Pay Tax Now on Purpose? Is it time to consider a Roth IRA? When does it make sense to accelerate your obligation to pay more taxes electively? General answer: NEVER The general rule of income tax planning is to defer income (into the future) and accelerate deductions (into this year) to lower your income tax bill. So, when does it make sense to pay taxes early in total contradiction to this general rule? Answer: when the tax-free growth on your Roth IRA far exceeds the cost of paying taxes early. Further, do you think that you will be in a higher tax bracket or tax rates will increase significantly over the years? Did you know that the highest income tax rate in 1981 was 70 percent as opposed to today’s highest rate of 37 percent? What is a Roth IRA? Roth IRA: A Roth IRA is like a traditional IRA; however, the contributions are made with after-tax dollars. The funds in the Roth IRA are allowed to grow tax-free, and when you withdraw the original contributed funds or the growth on the original funds, the distributions are also tax-free. It is truly amazing. For young people in a low-income tax bracket, this is a boondoggle, especially if there is a very long time horizon before having to take out the funds from the Roth IRA. Roth IRA Contribution Limitations: Note: there are caps on how much an individual can contribute to a Roth IRA each year. The cap for 2019 is $6,000 (or $7,000 for a catch-up contribution if you are over 55). Further, there is a prohibition on high-income earners contributing to a Roth IRA. The income limit is $137,000 for a single taxpayer and $203,000 for a married taxpayer. If you fall into this category, then you may wish to consider a Backdoor Roth IRA discussed below. Finally, please note that under certain circumstances, you may make Roth IRA contributions for a spouse (this is a well-kept secret).
There is no income or net worth limitation on who may use this conversion opportunity; therefore, it is often utilized by high-networth individuals who will not need to touch their IRA for a very long time. Non-IRA assets should be used to pay for the tax that triggers upon conversion (to avoid additional income on the funds withdrawn to pay the taxes). Roth IRA Distribution Rules - The beauty behind the Roth IRA: The Roth IRA grows tax-free precisely like a traditional IRA but, the Roth IRA does not have the same Required Minimum Distribution rules (RMD). Therefore, you can leave the IRA funds invested longer and allow the funds to continue to grow tax-free without forced out distributions (i.e., RMD). The Roth IRA can also pass to a spouse without taxation exactly like a traditional IRA, except the spouse does not have any RMD either. Therefore, the IRA funds can continue to grow tax-free throughout the surviving spouses’ lifetime. Note: the non-spouse beneficiaries (children and grandchildren) will have an RMD but, the inherited Roth IRA will continue to grow tax-free, and the distributions will all be tax-free. What is a Backdoor Roth IRA? Backdoor Roth IRA: If you earn more than the current income limits, you will not be eligible to contribute to a Roth IRA. For these high-income-earners, there is a well-known solution. It is referred to as a Backdoor Roth IRA. That is the nickname; it is nothing more than a contribution to a traditional IRA, which subsequently converts to a Roth IRA. Please ask your tax professional(s) to elaborate if you are in this fortunate category. The ROTH IRA presents many opportunities to combine several techniques to obtain a very successful tax and financial planning result. For example, you can utilize a charitable remainder trust, a life insurance trust, and a partial Roth IRA to reach all of your estate planning goals.
What is a Roth IRA Conversion? Roth IRA Conversion: If you have built up a traditional IRA and you wish to switch all or any part of it to a Roth IRA, you may do so. This switch is called a Roth IRA Conversion. The only catch is that you must immediately pay the income taxes on the value of your converted funds (with your next quarterly estimated income tax payment).

DIRECTIONS: STEP 1, PREPARATION • Bring a large pot of water to a boil over high heat (add a little salt to the water) • Boil the Linguini pasta for 8 minutes • Remove the pot after 8 minutes and drain the water STEP 2, MAKE THE PESTO • Add Basil, Garlic and EVOO to a blender • Blend together to make the Pesto STEP 3, CLAMS • Steam clams – Use as many clams as you like! • Place cleaned clams into a large kettle, wide pan, or wok For every pound of clams, add half a cup of water. • Layer the clams into the cooking container with the water (or white wine). Cover the cooking container and place over high heat. • Steam the clams Allow the clams enough time to open their shells - this will be indicated by a burst of steam and popped-open shells, anywhere from 2–3 minutes to 5-10 minutes, depending on the type of clams.
