In the world of diet, nutrition and healthcare, the trend over the last decade has been an awareness and move towards a more organic and natural approach to what we put in our bodies on a daily basis. With the food industry focusing on marketing taste and convenience, and with the rise in the use of chemicals in our food and GMO products, we have all become more discerning food shoppers. There is a place in Naples that has taken all of the guesswork out of the equation – Food And Thought. They have an All Organic grocery with all organic produce, a restaurant, a juice and coffee bar, a vitamin and supplement section, a store with clothing and other products, and so much more! Plus, the food in the restaurant is fantastic! I wanted to interview Jameson, the manager of Food And Thought, to get some more information about this fantastic store. FINE: Tell us about yourself and your background, where you are from and what was your family like? Where have you lived in the country or are you originally from Florida? Jameson: I was born and raised in Naples, Florida! My lovely wife Hannah is from Woodstock, Vermont and we have two beautiful kids. We really enjoy healthy Florida living! Cultivating more faith and having a good relationship with God is very important to us, and we truly hope to help our children appreciate that relationship as well. We love living on the gulf, and we enjoy everything it has to offer such as outdoor sports, running and cycling. I am here because my parents moved to Naples early in their own lives. My mom has been in town since she was 13 years old and my father came down to Naples when he was 15 years old. They met 5 years after moving here, and got married. They currently still live in town. FINE: What are some of the main objectives and goals of Food And Thought as a grocery, restaurant and store for our area? What are all of the things that you are providing as a store? Jameson: Food and Thought strives to offer the best selection of all organic, local, sustainable and always non-GMO products. This, however, is not just standard in our grocery store! We have the same militantly organic standard for our Cafe, Juice Bar and Produce Department. So there is no need to be a label reader here! We have taken the work out of the decisions for everyone who steps through our doors. Keeping up with products for people who have specific dietary needs like GF, V, Veg, Paleo and non-fat diets are very important to us.
One of our goals as a business is “To Be The Change We Wish To See In The World.” This motivates us to do things the right way for our customers by not cutting corners in any way. We make real food from scratch with the best ingredients to make healthy, convenient options for everyone. We also set out to make everyone a happier, healthier, and more sustainable person. We also want to help educate people on food, where it is coming from, as well as sharing tips on sustainable and environmentally friendly living. The impact that we make is very important to us, so we do our best to practice what we preach and continue to better our business in every way. FINE: What makes Food And Thought unique in this market and what makes you stand out from the competition? Jameson: I believe our business model and costumer service sets us apart from similar businesses. I have never been to another place like ours! Our courtyard is an enjoyable and relaxing haven that feels as comfortable as home. People come to eat, work, hang with friends, or to meet people and relax. We certainly have a wide variety of offerings under one roof, including a sustainable clothing store with something for everyone. There are brands like Patagonia, Prana, Toad and Company, etc. Another big point that makes us unique is that fact that we have our own organic farms supplying our store daily with produce. We are able to control our supply to make sure everything that comes into our store is 100% organic and is of the highest quality! FINE: Tell us a little bit about your produce and your farms? Jameson: Food and thought has its own 15-acre organic farm, located less than 20 miles from our Market. There are many varieties of vegetables and fruits grown and brought to our store daily! The “Season” here is just starting and will continue through the end of April. When we aren’t growing our own produce, we source all of our organic produce from as many certified local vendors as possible, but as the seasons grow and locations change, we continue to chase it. This allows us to

We also visit the farms that we buy or partner with, to ensure that the quality and standard of produce is exactly what our patrons are looking for. This practice has been lost with most businesses but is still very important to us. FINE: What are some trends that you have seen in this industry and how have you changed your business over the years? Jameson: Our business model has remained almost the same since we opened in 2004 and our passion for having an all-organic store will never change! We have always wanted to be a true health food store, delivering the healthiest food to our consumers, families and friends in our community. Although, trends change and diets and fads come and go, we feel it is pertinent to remain educated on new products and supplements for everyone’s changing needs. FINE: With the Naples market, have you seen an increase in the number of people coming to your store? Do the grocery shoppers also eat in the restaurant? Jameson: We have seen an increase in people’s awareness to the benefit of organic food and healthy eating. This in turn has created more business for us to continue to grow our store and build a better business for our community. Many new comers to our store start with eating at our Café and juice bar for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Over time they start to move into the supplement department, grocery store and produce department. I have noticed that newly pregnant women are taking a keen interest in healthy eating. They say you are what you eat and that carries real weight! Sadly, it takes a lack of good health sometimes for people to heed the warning and make a change. I believe a good diet and a healthy lifestyle are the best forms of life insurance. Our actions can impact others to make a change for the better. There is nothing more rewarding than helping others! FINE: What are some short term future plans for Food And Thought?

You can look forward to it’s opening around October of 2019. I also feel strongly that there is a need for more Food And Thought locations and I would love to see the business grow and expand to other cities in the future. FINE: What do you and your family enjoy about Naples? Jameson: Growing up in Naples, my family and I have always enjoyed water sports and boating. We would water ski and go to Key Waden almost every weekend. My friends and I love to surf and fish as well. The nice weather and clean air year round makes it easy to want to be outside and enjoy what South Florida has to offer. The beaches are beautiful and there are so many attractions for families as well. The Conservancy, The Naples Zoo and the Everglades Wonder Gardens are great places to visit. There are so many state parks as well! You can snorkel, dive, paddle board, hike, bike and camp onsite to make it more than just a day trip! FINE: What do you like the most about your job at Food And Thought? Jameson: I love my job in every way! I work for a company that I stand behind and believe in 100%! I have a great boss and love the Food And Thought family that I am privileged to work with every day. I feel like they are my extended family. Our customers are also fantastic and they feel like family as well. The atmosphere here could truly not be any better - I have the best office in town! FINE: What are some of your favorite things to do in Naples? What are some of your favorite restaurants? Jameson: Food And Thought is my favorite place to eat in town but it’s nice to get away from work and have a nice dinner date with my wife every now and then. We both really enjoy going to Bleu Provence, Barbatella and Alexander’s.
Jameson: Fortunately, we are in the process of expanding our market by adding an additional 8,000 square feet. We will be renovating and updating almost our entire store! Although the construction will not disrupt the fabric of our customer’s lives, we plan on being open regular hours and getting the work done when we are closed at night and on Sunday. We will increase the size of all our departments, add cash registers, expand and expedite the service of our Cafe’ and relocate and expand the Juice Bars offerings. After the build out is finished we plan on changing our store hours as well, we will be opening the café and juice/coffee bar earlier every day. As well as staying open later, for a more relaxing dinner service with our expanded beer and wine offerings. FINE: Do you have plans to open more stores and any possible future locations? Jameson: We are in the process of opening another Store location off of the North East corner of Livingston Road and Immokalee Road. This

IT’S TIME TO THINK ABOUT TAXES
Year-end Federal and State Tax Strategies While there are many year-end tax strategies that stand the test of time, with the recent changes to the federal tax code, it is imperative to understand which changes provide new opportunities and which changes may bring about unintended consequences.
Cash is easiest, however, appreciated securities may be the best thing to gift to charity.
The following is a quick checklist including tax strategies, reminders and immediate action steps you may take to ensure you can start 2019 on the right foot.
Gifting - If you have a taxable estate, then gifting a maximum annual exclusion gift of $15,000 to each person in your family (outright or in a specially designed Crummey type trust) is enormously important to chip away at your gift, estate, and generation-skipping transfer tax.

Your administrative action plan
Charitable Rollover - Instead of taking out money from your IRA and other retirement accounts and then gifting money to charity, you can direct the funds directly to your favorite charities from your retirement account. This will result in a lower Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) and maximize your charitable income tax savings (even in a year when you are not itemizing your deductions). The maximum Charitable Rollover is $100,000 per year. This can also go toward your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) for the year.
5/5 withdrawal rights - Determine if any trust which you are the trustee or beneficiary has special withdrawal powers. If so, analyze whether removing these assets from the trust(s) makes sense. CRT/CLT distributions - If you are a trustee or beneficiary of a charitable remainder or lead trust you must comply with the periodic distributions mandated by the trust.
Harvest losses - Talk to your advisors about selling off assets that have a loss in value and use the losses to offset the gains from the sale of assets that have increased in value. The idea is to pay little to no taxes on the combined transactions. Get rid of poor performers and replace them with new investments in the new year.
Trust distributions to pull out Distributable Net Income- If you are a trustee or beneficiary of a trust, it is essential that you make the appropriate annual distributions to push out the Distributable Net Income (DNI) to the beneficiary and report the same on a K-1. This often shifts the income to a taxpayer in a lower tax bracket than the trust tax bracket.
Bunch deductions - With the new doubled Standard Deduction ($24,000 for a couple), you may not need to list or itemize your deductible expenses on your income tax return; therefore, if you have large expenses that can be bunched into alternate years, you may wish to take the standard deduction in alternative years and itemize in the other years. For example, you could give large charitable gifts every other year when you can enjoy itemizing and make few gifts in the year that you use the Standard Deduction.
Lock in income, gift and estate tax benefits while they last - In other related articles we discuss the major new tax changes including many benefits that expire in a number of years. Take advantage of these extremely favorable options while they are still available.
Defer income - If you can control the timing of receipts of bonuses and large sporadic income, then postpone it until January to have an additional year before having to pay the tax on the deferred income.
Crummey Letters and annual accounting - If you are a trustee or beneficiary of a trust, there are several annual administrative tasks, such as sending notice of right to withdraw assets and providing a reasonable accounting of the year’s activities. Change of domicile evidence - If you have just relocated to Florida, lock in the very favorable real estate tax savings by declaring Florida your domicile and filing for homestead tax exemption.
Roth your IRA - It is never too late to decide to pay taxes now on your IRA and convert it to a tax-free Roth. That said, the rules are complex, and a tax advisor should run the numbers to see if a Roth Conversion makes sense. Still employed? Maximize your contributions to your retirement plan - Contributions to retirement accounts including IRA’s and Roth IRA’s can greatly reduce taxes and provide great psychological and financial well-being. If your children and grandchildren cannot afford to maximize their contributions, ask your advisors how you might help them accomplish this goal. Maximize your contribution to your Health Savings Account - Like an IRA, contributions to a Health Savings Account (HSA) and equivalent accounts allow taxpayers to put away pre-tax dollars and pay for medical care with pre-tax dollars. Things to remember!
As we approach the end of the fiscal tax year, take the time to sit with your CPA and discuss year-end tax strategies. Feel free to share this list and consider these key items that may have an impact on your financial and psychological well-being.
