Owner of Old Naples Surf Shop FINE: Tell us a little bit about yourself. What is your background, where did you grow up, where have you lived? Sharda: Our family moved to Naples in 1972 from Manchester England where I grew up. I graduated from Naples High School and then Rollins College in Winter Park where I met my husband. We have two native Neapolitan children! FINE: How did you get into the retail business and did you have other stores before this one? Sharda: Old Naples Surf Shop is my only experience at owning a retail store – I did volunteer at the nature store for the Friends of Rookery Bay, which gave me the motivation to go into business. I felt that I could bring a new dynamic to the beach/surf retail business in Naples and offer our residents and visitors a unique shopping experience. FINE: What made you choose Naples and what was the motivation behind opening the Old Naples Surf Shop? When did you open the store? Sharda: Naples has been my home for the majority of my life. My parents, sister and children live here, too. Old Naples Surf Shop is a local institution, opening in 1983 – I acquired the shop in 2011. Due to the expanding, younger demographic, Naples seemed the obvious location to grow the surfing lifestyle business. Our mission is to provide customers with an amazing shopping experience – friendly environment, excellent customer service and a fun array of merchandise from which to shop! We are truly locals serving locals. FINE: Tell us a little bit about the brands and lines you carry for shirts, shorts, etc. and if there is a reason behind which lines you carry?

Sharda: We carry all the major surf brands – Billabong, Quiksilver, Hurley, Volcom, Reef, Rainbow, Vissla, etc. These brands are the standard in the surf industry offering the best in beach, surf wear, footwear and accessories. I’m always looking for the unique and strive to provide our customers with a wide variety of choices that can’t be found anywhere else. Additionally we have brought exciting new and original international names to town. We are also huge supporters of our local brands and carry, amongst others, Brethren, Saltwater Syndicate and Snikwah. FINE: Tell us a little bit about the surfboards and skateboards that you carry? Does this west coast of Florida with the Gulf cater to certain types of surfing or boards over others? Sharda: We carry surfboards, skate boards, skim boards and stand up paddle boards. Our surfboards are from well known Florida shaper, Ricky Carroll; foam top surf boards and Beater Boards from Catch Surf; skateboards from Sector 9 and Globe; skim boards from Zap, a Florida west coast company. Our Paddleboards are primarily from WatersEdge SUP, also a Florida company. ONSS is the exclusive retailer for most of these brands in our area. When deciding which boards to bring in we always consider the typical gulf conditions and offer boards that will work best in this area. We also have customers who travel to the east coast as well as overseas and have the ability to acquire custom boards from Ricky Carroll to best suit their needs. Zap Skimboards is located in Venice so their boards are designed to work well in Gulf coast conditions. FINE: What are some other activities or items that you offer to customers here? Sharda: We are developing a comprehensive watersports program that features paddle boarding and skim boarding.
SHOP Our experienced instructors offer private and group skim boarding lessons and we’ll be including specific skim boarding clinics throughout the year culminating in the ONSS 13th Avenue South Skim Jam held in October each year. Surfing lessons are available depending on the conditions.
As boating and paddle boarding enthusiasts, our family loves to find a quiet spot on the Gulf side of Key Island or anywhere in Rookery Bay. Sunday morning you might find us walking the shop mascot Griffin in the beautiful Naples Botanical Gardens hammock trails or along the Gordon River Greenway.
We also offer paddle board lessons, both private and group, with trained, certified and experienced instructors. During the season we will have beginner stroke clinics as well as paddle board yoga and fitness classes. Eco-tours are also available on an individual basis.
FINE: Is there anything that you would like to add for our readers?
FINE: What are the best beaches or places to surf, paddleboard, skim board, etc.? Sharda: The locals’ favorite surf and skim spot is still around the Pier where you’ll find surfers and skimmers out when conditions are good. For beach paddle boarding we prefer the beaches south of the Pier where you can go for a long, quiet paddle. There are also some beautiful natural areas in Rookery Bay and Delnor Wiggins State Park for paddle boarding, as well as the new Gordon River Greenway. FINE: What are some trends that you see here in town in the surf industry? Sharda: We’re seeing a demographic shift to a younger, professional and multi-generational family participation in beach and water sports. Surf industry trends, aside from fashion, are moving back to longer surfboards and shorter SUP boards FINE: What are some of your favorite local spots here? Restaurants, cool beaches, any hidden treasures? Sharda: So many wonderful places to eat and shop in the area ……all the local businesses on Third Street and the surrounding avenues are favorites.
Sharda: I have a sincere hope that the delicate balance between our very fragile natural environment and the demands for new development and redevelopment can be achieved by sensible and sustainable growth. By fostering a love for our beaches, the water and truly unique environment I hope that we all will take care of and preserve what we have for future generations. I also believe in providing fun safe activities for our children on the water and beaches. By hosting the 13th Avenue South Skim Jam each year we give our kids an opportunity to compete and show off their skim boarding talents. FINE: Do you have any favorite local charities or organizations? Sharda: I support as many local charities as much as possible including the Friends of Rookery Bay, Lighthouse of Collier, Humane Society and the Everglades Foundation.

Our hands are the only thing connected to the golf club, so why don’t we make it perfect?
The grip is an important but often overlooked fundamental part of the golf swing. A correct or incorrect grip will greatly influence the distance, direction, and trajectory of each shot. Beginning with your left hand on the club for a right handed player, place the grip in the fingers of the left hand with the heel of the palm stabilizing the club, and thumb down the center of the shaft, you should see 3 knuckles. Next place your right hand underneath covering the left thumb and wrap your hand around the grip until the thumb is positioned down the center of the shaft. Both thumbs positioned down the center of the shaft are the backbone that supports the golf club in the correct positions throughout the swing. Place your hands on correctly on the club the same way every time for more consistent golf shots.

Whether you are young or more mature, marriage is most often about love and not money. Unfortunately, without careful planning before the marriage, your assets, especially your Florida homestead property, may very likely be compromised by tying the knot. This article will focus exclusively on the effect of marriage on your Florida homestead property. Designed in part to protect your spouse and children, the Florida homestead laws (which are mandated by the Florida Constitution and the Florida Probate statute) impose certain restrictions on the transfer of your homestead property. The following scenarios illustrate how the homestead laws may operate to override your wishes and result in the unintentional gift of homestead property to your spouse: Sale of Homestead Regardless of whether your homestead is in your sole name or held as tenants by the entireties (a joint tenancy exclusively available for married couples) you may not sell your interest in the real property without the signature of your spouse. Imagine if you entered into marriage with a two million dollar home and never realized that you no longer control the ultimate disposition of your property. Divorce Under Florida law, your homestead most likely will be subject to equitable distribution. The facts and circumstances, such as length of marriage and who used the property, may be taken into consideration in determining how your homestead will be divided. Death of Homestead Owner If you are survived by a spouse, Florida law requires you to give your homestead outright to your spouse. If you fail to do so and have children, your homestead will pass to your surviving spouse for his or her lifetime use, with the remainder passing to your heirs at law. If you fail to do so and you do not have children, your homestead will pass outright to your spouse. So, for example, if you are survived by a spouse and your estate planning documents leave your homestead to your nieces and nephews, Florida’s homestead law will override your wishes and your intended beneficiaries will be disinherited.

Consider the following brief list of solutions for avoiding the default homestead rules discussed above… Premarital or Postmarital Agreement A well-written marital agreement entered into before or after marriage can be used to provide clear instruction as to what will happen to the disposition of property, including homestead real property, in the event of death or divorce. With this agreement, one spouse waives his or her homestead rights discussed above. Typically, the homestead waiver provides that the owner of the interest in the homestead has unfettered right to dispose of the property as he or she deems appropriate without the spouse. Voluntary Signature from Spouse During your lifetime, if your spouse joins in the conveyance of your homestead, you may sell it or transfer it to another person or entity. But, if you wish to retain a right to dispose of the property at your death, you will want to obtain a homestead waiver. Irrevocable Trust or other Entity Structure There are numerous irrevocable lifetime transfers that will effectively permanently remove your homestead from the Florida default homestead rules prohibiting the disposition of the homestead that is in your estate. These are too complex to cover in detail here. Just note that it is imperative that your professional advisors know and understand your long-term intentions and objectives before establishing your estate plan (specifically including the freedom to control the disposition of your Florida homestead). In conclusion, it is wise to meet with your attorney, accountant and financial advisor prior to marriage to clarify your long-term estate and financial plan. A well-drafted and negotiated marital agreement will result in diminished future uncertainty and foster a better financial understanding of the reality of the joint circumstances.

High Point Market is one of the top thrills for interior designers to venture to each year. High Point Market sets the trends for the upcoming season and releases the newest styles and innovative furniture and accessories that set the tone for the months ahead. This is a great place for designers to stay ahead of the curve by staying on top of the latest and greatest designs. Twice a year in the quiet town of High Point, the population doubles in size and welcomes over 85,000 vendors, distributors and interior designers. Here are my favorite design styles from Market that will be hot this spring:
SCULPTURE
A great example of an innovative sculpture furniture piece is the Cherry Blossom cabinet from Ambella Home collection. It is a media cabinet to hide your television in, but it really is so much more. It is a piece of art. This cabinet incorporates dimension and shape, but also brings in a touch of femininity and texture.

One of my favorite design elements that I saw at Market was the use of watercolor. Instead of incorporating a color through wallpaper or drapery, why not add it through a show-stopping cabinetry piece? The Mabel Watercolor cabinets designed by John Strauss are inspired by watercolor paintings, as well as natural forms such as agate and crystals. This piece is a great statement piece and brings color into your space in fun and creative way.

ACRYLIC FINISHES
The use of acrylic was very popular at Market, whether on handle pulls on dressers, legs on cocktail and dining chairs, to dining table bases. It’s a fresh and fun look that gives an illusion of more space and clean lines. One of my favorite pieces that incorporated acrylic are the dining table bases from Belle Meade Signature.
