If you were told that you had one hour to prepare your home for a hurricane and leave the area, what would you do? What would you take with you? What is irreplaceable? Is your home hurricane-ready and do you have an exit strategy? Whether Florida is your home or your second home, it is critical to put a plan in place BEFORE hurricane season comes along. It’s important to identify what is truly essential and what is truly irreplaceable. All the rest… well, it can be replaced. GET ORGANIZED Irreplaceable items are undoubtedly a great place to begin. Identify your family heirlooms, select the photos you do not want to lose, and gather your important documents. Here is a brief list of items to gather: • All forms of identification including licenses, passports, social security cards, and birth certificates for all of your family members • Estate planning documents • Real estate records (including deeds, tax information such as closing documents and list of improvements, etc.) • Medical records: This includes prescriptions and a list of your medical providers. We recommend having a week’s supply at a minimum. For example. if you wear glasses, bring a backup pair, contacts, and prescription for replacement. • Insurance policies: Often overlooked, but critically important are pictures of all your valuables including jewelry and artwork. • Pets medications, medical information, and other important documents: Prepare at least a two-week supply of food and have a durable animal carrier readily available in case of an evacuation. • Phonebook or cloud backup of all important contact information: Also, make a list of direct numbers for emergency services. • Tax documentation for at least the past three years • Passwords • Portable backup for your personal and business computer or access via the cloud

Beyond having a destination, it is key to have a support system, including family and friends. What is your backup plan if you cannot drive or ambulate? What happens when the storm turns toward your backup location? Since we originally wrote our series on Hurricane Preparedness five years ago, we had dodged any significant natural disaster… until Irma. As we see many people still recovering from the effects of this year’s storms, we are reminded to stay vigilant and alert as we approach hurricane season, yet again.
• Checklist for buttoning up the house for a quick departure • Jewelry that is either irreplaceable or valuable: If there is too much to carry, possibly place non-daily wear jewelry in a safe deposit box. Have a readily available sealable waterproof container to store all of these important documents and supplies. Keep these instructions and supplies accessible, so you can collect them in the case of an accident or sudden evacuation.
