WATERGATE CAKE

ingredients:

1 Box white cake mix 3 eggs 1 c vegetable oil 1 c lemon-lime flavored carbonated drink 2 (3 ounce) packages instant pistachio pudding mix 1 cup frozen whipped topping, thawed 1 cup cold milk

directions:

Combine cake mix eggs, oil, soda drink and 1 box pistachio pudding. Pour batter into a greased and floured 13 x 9 inch pan or 2 round pans or a bundt pan. Bake at 350* for 30 – 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into cake comes out clean. Cool completely. While cake is baking, mix 1 box of pistachio pudding, whipped topping, and milk. Chill. Ice cooled cake with chilled frosting.

This cake is great with any pudding flavor. The pistachio pudding is wonderful for a St. Patrick’s Day celebration with its limey green color. I’ve enjoyed this cake, over the years, at my Mother In-laws. The recipe was passed down, to her, from her Mother In-law.

MANAGING YOUR TRUST As estate planning attorneys, for years we created revocable trusts for clients and generally recommended the use of trusts to hold assets for the further benefit of the surviving spouse as well as children and more remote descendants. However, with recent changes in the federal estate tax law, including an estate tax rate of 40%, a federal exemption to $5,450,000 for 2016 and the addition of portability (the ability to use a deceased spouse’s unused federal estate tax exemption), this general rule may no longer always apply. One of the most common tools used by estate planners is a credit shelter trust. In a credit shelter trust, assets up to the amount that can pass free from the federal estate tax will be held in further trust for the spouse. These assets, while available to care for your spouse, are not included in your spouse’s estate and avoid estate taxation when the surviving spouse passes. However, because the assets of the credit shelter trust are not included in your spouse’s estate, there is no step-up in the basis of these assets on the surviving spouse’s death. While we still recommend that clients create and fund a revocable trust as a method to minimize or avoid probate, the decisions regarding the trust provisions for a surviving spouse (e.g. distributing the assets outright to your spouse, or holding them in further trust for your spouse) are more difficult. Due to the changes in the estate tax laws, increase in the capital gains tax rate and other income tax changes, in many cases the potential income tax is a greater issue than the estate tax. As a result, in some cases it may be beneficial to alter your estate plan and provide for an outright distribution to the surviving spouse while giving your spouse the option to disclaim this distribution. If your spouse disclaims the distribution (i.e. refuses to accept the outright distribution), the disclaimed property would pass to a credit shelter trust for the spouse’s benefit. Further, since portability became part of the federal estate tax law, many estate planners have indicated that clients

no longer need to equalize their estates or use a credit shelter trust to minimize the estate tax. While this may simplify the estate planning discussion, recent studies have indicated that couples who have a taxable estate are better off continuing to equalize their estates and use credit shelter trusts rather than relying on portability. This is especially true in cases where the clients have property in a state with a death tax. The decision to forego a trust for your spouse and rely upon the possible use of a disclaimer also raises a number of other issues. This decision to minimize potential income taxes must be weighed against the loss of control over your assets which may be especially true in the case of second marriages or in cases where children are those of one spouse but not the other. Consideration must also be given to issues concerning creditors, whether the clients hold property in a state which also assesses a state death tax and whether a surviving spouse may relocate to a state with a death tax to be closer to children. Although estate planning has never been a “one size fits all” proposition, changes to the estate and income tax laws have often made the estate planning alternatives and decisions more complicated and require that you consider income tax, estate tax and control issues when designing an estate plan to meet your goals.

COSMOS CAFE AND PIZZERIA Ingredients Fregola pasta, 300 g 4 Artichokes 6 Tablespoons of Bottarga 1 Clove of garlic 1 Packet of saffron powder Parsley Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) Salt White wine Preparation – Fregola Pasta Bring 1 Liter of water in a pan to a boil and add the 300 grams of Fregola Pasta Boil for 10 minutes Preparation – Sauce Clean Artichoke Cut artichoke into quarters, or 4 pieces for each artichoke Soak the artichoke quarters in water and lemon juice Chop and mince the 1 clove of garlic In a large saucepan, sauté garlic in 3 Tablespoons of EVOO When brown, add the artichoke quarters Add a pinch of salt Add saffron packet Add a dash of white wine Stir around and sauté briefly Allow simmering for a bit Final Preparation Drain water from Fregola Pasta Add Fregola pasta to the large saucepan with the sauce Stir around and allow to simmer for a few minutes on low heat Add Parsley and Bottarga Ready to serve – 4 people

High Point Market is one of the top thrills for interior designers to venture to each year. High Point Market sets the trends for the upcoming season and releases the newest styles and innovative furniture and accessories that set the tone for the months ahead. This is a great place for designers to stay ahead of the curve by staying on top of the latest and greatest designs. Twice a year in the quiet town of High Point, the population doubles in size and welcomes over 85,000 vendors, distributors and interior designers. Here are my favorite design styles from Market that will be hot this spring:

SCULPTURE

A great example of an innovative sculpture furniture piece is the Cherry Blossom cabinet from Ambella Home collection. It is a media cabinet to hide your television in, but it really is so much more. It is a piece of art. This cabinet incorporates dimension and shape, but also brings in a touch of femininity and texture.

One of my favorite design elements that I saw at Market was the use of watercolor. Instead of incorporating a color through wallpaper or drapery, why not add it through a show-stopping cabinetry piece? The Mabel Watercolor cabinets designed by John Strauss are inspired by watercolor paintings, as well as natural forms such as agate and crystals. This piece is a great statement piece and brings color into your space in fun and creative way.

ACRYLIC FINISHES

The use of acrylic was very popular at Market, whether on handle pulls on dressers, legs on cocktail and dining chairs, to dining table bases. It’s a fresh and fun look that gives an illusion of more space and clean lines. One of my favorite pieces that incorporated acrylic are the dining table bases from Belle Meade Signature.
