ANGELIC DESSERTS BAKERY & CAFE My family and friends discovered a fantastic bakery in the Galleria at Vanderbilt Shoppes a few years ago when they had just opened, Angelic Desserts Bakery. The owners, Russ and Marina, were wonderful and offered us a taste of many of their incredible items. It was instantly clear that this was a unique bakery with a lot of passion behind everything in the store. Their passion is to produce breathtaking and delicious handmade custom cakes, cupcakes, pastries and desserts, all from scratch with organic, Non-GMO, ingredients. This is a true Artisan bakery with a European touch! FINE: Tell us about yourself and your background? Where you are from and what was your family like? Where have you lived in the country or are you originally from Florida? Tell us about your work/professional background? Marina: I am originally from Serbia and grew up in a small town where we had our own vegetable garden and made everything from scratch. We also did not waste any food! I ended up moving to the United States when I was 17. I started my family there a few years later and began to bake at my house in Chicago as a stay at home Mom. The baking at home became more serious as I spent more time perfecting my passion. I went to school for a little bit, got a job at Dominic’s Grocery Store in Chicago as a baker and manager, and really liked that a lot! I didn’t like seeing how the food was handled though; everything was frozen and had preservatives, and I just wanted to bake everything fresh that day. My goal was always to have a true bakery, making everything from scratch with healthy, non-processed, Non-GMO, organic ingredients. When I came to the US, the food tasted different. For example, I could not find any good tomatoes; they just didn’t taste g vvery good. The tomatoes we grew back in Serbia were like candy and ttasted great.
FINE: How and when did you first have the idea to start the Angelic Bakery? What made you choose Naples and the Vanderbilt Galleria area for your store location?
Marina: I always wanted to have a true bakery where everything is made fresh daily, with no preservatives and all healthy non-processed ingredients. I moved to Naples because of several reasons. I recently lost our daughter, Angela, 2 years ago to Cystic Fibrosis and her Doctors had said that the warmer, cleaner air down here would be better for her lungs. We had vacationed here as a family many times. After visiting Naples again, and seeing how beautiful this place really was, we decided that Naples was the best location for my daughter and our family. When I came to Naples, I started working at a local restaurant and handled all of their baked goods. The owner let me bake whatever I wanted and was very nice and supportive with that. I asked if I could use some of my ideas with the baked goods? He said yes and I started to make some of my creations. The customers really liked what I was doing and would even ask to buy an entire cake or pie instead of just one piece. That was a great experience. I then decided to start doing a booth at the farmers market in the Galleria at the Vanderbilt Shoppes. The response to my baked goods was fantastic. I was just so pleased to see people enjoying my baking. I started looking at store locations and ended up leasing this space in the Galleria Shoppes. We have grown quickly and it is such a blessing to be here! My passion is baking and I wanted to give customer’s organic healthy baked goods, organic coffee, organic milk, etc. FINE: What makes Angelic Bakery unique and different from other bakeries? Russ & Marina: We are a specialized bakery, catering to a lot of different people with different food needs and requirements. We listen to our customers and make what they want. There are so many different food allergies and special diets now; anyone can come in our store and find exactly

FINE: Can you tell us about some unique food selections and some of the different items in the bakery? What about some of the lunch and drink items that you offer as well? Russ & Marina: Vegan customers are actually our most popular customers right now. We have a lot of vegan food items, such as Vegan Belgium Chocolate Cake, Vegan Cupcakes, Vegan Cinnamon Rolls, Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies, Vegan Carrot Cake, Vegan Key Lime Pie, and Vegan Baklava just to name a few.
FINE: What are some of your favorite things about Naples and why do you like living here? Russ & Marina: We really love the weather and being able to do things outside all year. We love to be outside in nature. When we were back in Chicago, the winters seemed long and we couldn’t really be outside for a good portion of the year. Here, it is so beautiful and peaceful, it is truly a wonderful place and sometimes I can’t believe we live here! FINE: Tell us about some of the charitable and philanthropic things you have done with the bakery in our community? Russ & Marina: We do a lot of philanthropic work locally, from baking items and handing them out to people, to supporting local charities that are close to our hearts. Here are some that we support:
Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Shelter for Abused Women Homeless Shelters Toys for Tots Salvation Army Golisano Children’s Hospital Local Families with hardships
The lunch items came from us trying to find healthy lunch options in town. We wanted to find places that made lunch items fresh without a lot of sodium and preservatives. We started offering some unique lunch items such as Cabbage Rolls and home made Soups. With our soups, we make the broth; we do not buy stock broth. Our soups are very healthy and our customers really like them. FINE: What are some of your favorite things about the bakery? Russ & Marina: We really love to interact with our customers, to hear what they want or need, and to be able to make something custom and fresh for them, and to see them really enjoy the food. We enjoy being a part of the community and have a passion for helping people. We want to grow with our customers and as a local business serving the community.

We decided to open a flower store in the front because we were doing so many weddings, that we wanted to supply our own flowers, offering many rare and unique flowers that are not typically sold in stores. The back is for extra food storage and much needed space for our bakery. It is really working out well!

They are named Angel cookies after my daughter Angela, and it is such a blessing because seeing people buy them and enjoy them always reminds me of how incredible and special my daughter was!

Bucatini Alla Gricia INGREDIENTS: • 1 box Bucatini style pasta • 2 Cups heavy cream • 8 oz Pecorino Romano cheese, freshly grated • 8 oz Pancetta, cut into small pieces • • 1 clove of garlic, peeled and smashed • 2 Basil leaves • 1 Tablespoon Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) • 1 box of chopped tomatoes
COOKING INSTRUCTIONS: Step 1 • In a pot, add 2 cups heavy cream and bring to a boil • When cream is boiling, remove from the burner, and add a handful of Pecorino Cheese, and put the cream and cheese into a blender and blend together Step 2 • In another pot, bring water to a boil and add the Bucatini Pasta, cook for 10 min Step 3 • At the same time, in a saucepan on medium heat, add EVOO to sauté the cut Pancetta and smashed garlic Step 4 • After the pasta is finished boiling for 10 minutes, empty the water and add the sautéed Pancetta and garlic to the pasta in the pot • Put the heat on medium and stir the pasta, Pancetta, garlic and sauce • Add the 2 Basil leaves to this mix, stir for about 2 minutes Step 5 • Pour ½ of the blended heavy cream and cheese from Step 1 to the pasta • Add a pinch of pepper to the pasta • Pour the rest of the blended heavy cream and cheese over the pasta • Stir for another 2 minutes • Mix well and serve immediately
