Outdoor Bars Outdoor bars are another upgrade that can really bring your backyard to the next level. They are the perfect addition to your outdoor living space if you like to entertain. As with outdoor kitchens and living rooms, your outdoor bar can be simple or extravagant. Popular upgrades include wine and beer coolers, bar sinks and builtin kegerators for a genuine bar experience. When planning your outdoor bar, keep in mind the same considerations as for outdoor kitchens and living rooms. Ensure that all your appliances are safe for outdoor storage and use, and design with your primary functions in mind.

Lighting and Heating It is important to plan for adequate heating and lighting options to enable you to make the most of your outdoor space. High quality space heaters are essential, and a fire pit, fireplace or even pizza oven can become the focal point of your outdoor lounging space in the evenings. If you have an outdoor kitchen or bar, make sure that you have ample lighting options in thatDEPaRtMEntS area in case you end up hosting a late night appetizer party or midnight

Children’s Play Areas Play areas for the children are essential if you have young kids, and the options are endless. When planning this area, keep in mind the ages of your children and the estimated lifespan of the play area. Many play area options, such as swing sets and tree houses, can be enjoyed for many years, especially if you have children of varying ages, so be sure to invest in wellmade, durable equipment.

96

Landscaping Quality landscaping can work wonders for an outdoor living space. Paths, greenery, water fountains, waterfalls, flowers and plants can provide the perfect final touches to make your outdoor living space truly magical. If you are not a gardener or plant person, a professional can work with you to plan your overall yard and find plants and greenery to brighten up your space with minimal maintenance.

The options are endless to turn your backyard into an oasis of pleasure. Enjoy the summer!

t CNG Stone Products, you will get the best quality materials installed by trained craftspeople who take pride in their work. “I’m very lucky to be working with a strong team with lots of experience,” says Scott Tresek, owner of CNG Stone in Regina. “We put a lot of pride in our work.” CNG Stone offers a wide selection of beautiful exotic granite to choose from. Not sure what to pick? The sales staff will help you find what will work with the colours in your kitchen or bathroom. Tresek explains that with their laser-measuring technology, measuring and cutting is a very quick but precise job. Paying close attention to detail and accuracy, the measuring process can be done within 20 minutes. Once the granite is measured and cut, installation generally takes just a few hours. Because they understand the inconvenience of having a kitchen renovated, CNG Stone Products focuses on being quick and exact with their delivery and installation. “We guarantee that the granite will be installed within two weeks after the cabinets are installed,” remarks Tresek. Quality product combined with impeccable craftsmanship and outstanding service: that’s what you get when you choose CNG Stone Products. The showroom is open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Call or visit them online for more information or to book a consultation.

“We had a fire in our home and decided that since we were renovating, we would change the countertops too. We had them work on the kitchen and the bathrooms. Scott and Susan took the time to show us their wares and helped us choose the right countertop. The crew were very hard working, personable and professional. They were a real pleasure to work with. We would definitely suggest CNG Stone Products to anyone.” —James and Kathryn Harris

“We were doing a kitchen reno with our addition and had gone to a few other companies, but our custom cabinet maker suggested CNG Stone Products. Susan was really great! She was on board with whatever I wanted to do. Her customer service was awesome! The installers showed up when they said they would. They were clean, courteous and careful. They even gave me information about how to clean and care for the granite. We are so pleased that we are planning on doing more work in our home and CNG Stone will be the first people we call.” —Laurie Pechey

f you’re in the market for a stylish home at an affordable price, look no further than Artisan Design Build. The company creates innovative, highquality homes with a focus on value for the money. “The value that we provide is hard for a competitor to match,” says Michelle Lam, Artisan’s marketing manager. “People can’t believe they’re getting what they are for the amount they’re paying, especially those who are doing comparison shopping.” One of Artisan’s popular collections is the Spark series laneway homes. These designs are available in four models, ranging from 1249 sq. ft. to 1572 sq. ft. Floor plans include two and three

bedroom models, making them ideal for young couples, families and retirees. “Our laneways, along with our finishes, provide an option for new homebuyers that they would not have otherwise,” says Lam. Laneway homes feature a driving lane behind the home for access to parking with the option for a garage, rather than an attached garage. These homes start at $244,804 plus the lot. Artisan excels in modern design, carefully sourcing finishes to offer a luxurious feel without the expensive price tag. Their design and build process is streamlined to be efficient, enabling them to keep costs down. All of Artisan’s designs feature high-end finishes such as quartz countertops, tile backsplashes in the

kitchen, and undermounted sinks. The quality of the build matches the modern style with triple pane windows and ICF basements. For buyers interested in a townhouse style design, Artisan has recently released the Glide townhomes, part of the Ice series. The three-bedroom floorplan features an open-concept design, with nine-foot ceilings on both the main and upper floors. Stucco exteriors, large windows and flat rooflines create a sleek curb appeal. “These townhomes offer a desired premium modern lifestyle,” says Lam. Glide townhomes are 1404 sq. ft. and offer a large kitchen island, master bedroom with ensuite and walk-in closet,

second-floor stackable laundry, and a semidetached garage. The modern design, along with features such as air conditioning and ENERGY STAR high-efficiency gas furnaces, adds to the townhouses’ outstanding value. Prices for a Glide townhome currently start at $389,000, a promotional price that the Artisan team encourages buyers to take advantage of. Artisan homes are built in such neighbourhoods as Edgewater and Harbour Landing, with plans to also join the new developments of Coopertown and Westerra. Interested buyers can view several showhomes from the company’s collections, including an Ice series home at 5274 Aviator Crescent and a Spark series laneway home at 5301 Mitchinson Way. Recently opened is a three-bedroom, garagefront design from Artisan’s Spark series, at 5752 Pearsall Crescent. “People think our showhomes are filled with upgrades, as our style is modern, and the finishes are what would typically be considered upgrades in the building industry,” says Lam. “But with our showhomes, what you see is what you get.” View the show homes Monday to Thursday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., and weekends and holidays from 12 to 5 p.m. Your standard for living is about to go up. ith spring coming, days getting longer and the sun shining, it’s easy to see that your windows are going to need a good cleaning after a long winter. And of course, window cleaning is one household chore we all love to hate. The streaks always appear, no matter how many times you wash and dry, and of course, there are all those windows you can hardly reach, or the ones that need a ladder to climb up to. It’s timeconsuming and potentially dangerous,

and something that no one really wants to do—well, almost no one. The team at Capital Window Cleaning has been doing windows for more than 20 years. They enjoy cleaning windows, and they’d be happy to clean yours.

Don’t risk injury Capital’s team of window-cleaning experts are fully trained with all the right equipment to get the job done. Why risk your personal safety and wellbeing,

when you can hire professionals who can get it done quickly and leave your windows sparkling clean.

Don’t pay forsomeone else’s mistakes Many people are willing to offer you a deal to clean your windows, but did you know if they are not properly insured, you could be liable if they injure themselves on your property? The Capital team is properly insured, so there’s no risk to

Family-friendly Capital also uses non-toxic window cleaning products. This means your family and your pets aren’t exposed to any unnecessary harsh chemicals. Finally, getting someone else to clean your windows means you don’t have to, and you can spend your time doing something else. Capital Window Cleaning will get the job done well and efficiently. That includes any window— inside or out—with any kind of glass. Evening and weekend appointments are available, and Capital Window Cleaning can provide a free estimate when you’re ready to let the spring sunshine in through shiny clean windows. The choice is clear… your windows will be too.

Get ready for spring and fall cleaning Once you book your appointment for spring and fall, Capital Window Cleaning will contact you when your booked date is approaching. edicated and dependable are two words that come to mind when one thinks of Darren and Jaimie McClare of D’s Deeds Yard and Home Maintenance. When Darren and wife, Jaimie, opened their business in the fall of 2008, they did so by loading their baby in a wagon and walking around the Lakeview neighbourhood handing out 20 fliers. Since then, the business has grown steadily with many new customers who have heard of the couple’s reliable and friendly service from satisfied neighbours.

D’s Deeds offers a wide variety of services to meet all your yard and home maintenance needs throughout the year. Services including rooftop snow removal, commercial and residential yard maintenance, yard clean ups, tree and shrub planting, rototilling, junk removal, sod and sprinkler installation, sprinkler blow-outs and skid steer services. D’s Deeds has expanded recently, and with their larger team, is now able to install both decks and wooden fences. In addition, Jaimie, with five years of interior design experience, is able to advise

clients on colour choices for both interior and exterior use. D’s Deeds works with homebuilders as well as homeowners. Darren and Jaimie are proud to be a family-owned and-operated business and to live and work in Regina with its great

people. “We treat our customers like friends, not as a business opportunity,” says Darren. “We love being known for our work ethic and our honesty (good oldfashioned help). We will never turn down a job for being too small. We are honest, fair priced, and go above and beyond the expectations of our customers.” D’s Deeds offers discounts to seniors and new homeowners. Having grown their business almost entirely by word-of-mouth, you know that the team at D’s Deeds not only meets, but exceeds, their clients’ expectations. “Darren is a hardworking young man and is always there to help,” says client, Edward Kleckner. “D’s Deeds is truly a family-run business: everyone pitches in to help each other. They have a good strong work ethic and are concerned about their customers.” Barbara S., another satisfied customer, exclaims, “Anyone who calls for the services of D’s Deeds will be dealing with not only a hard-working young man, but one with genuine warmth and high intelligence as well as an amazing work ethic!” “Most companies don’t make time for small jobs, but for us, no job is too small,” notes Darren. Charity Begins at HOME…

#1 Fundraising Office in Canada!

$83,462.01 . . . and so does corporate responsibility. CENTURY 21® Dome Realty agents and staff are committed to Easter Seals and sending kids to camp. Each year, CENTURY 21® Dome agents and staff organize and volunteer at numerous fundraising events and also donate themselves to this cause. As the CENTURY 21® charity of choice internationally, our office has been invited to experience a number of events where we can see firsthand the incredible difference this organization makes. We are extremely proud of the accomplishments of our team of agents and staff, but we feel the best accomplishment is to be a top fundraising office in Canada supporting Easter Seals year after year. The teamwork and hard work of our offices to raise funds for children with disabilities to be able to attend summer camp, and then to see

the smiles we put on those children's faces, is an amazing feeling. Camp Easter Seal is about helping children living with disabilities to be able to experience opportunities that they may be unable to experience elsewhere. Since 1994, CENTURY 21 Dome in Regina has been raising funds for Camp Easter Seals in Watrous, Saskatchewan, and since then, we have raised over $1,250,000. CENTURY 21® system members around the world have supported Easter Seals since 1979 as their national “charity of choice” through local fundraising activities and volunteerism. To date, more than $100 million has been raised for this charity.

EXPERTAdvice The Ins and Outs of Applying for a Mortgage

F

or most people, applying for a mortgage is not something that is done very often. Whether you are a first time homebuyer looking to apply for your first mortgage, or you are a homeowner and have had a mortgage for a long time and are looking to apply for a new mortgage, you may be wondering what you will need and how the process works.

Cari Skjerven Mobile Mortgage Specialist Affinity Credit Union Regina Area 306.552.6468 Cari.skjerven@affinitycu.ca

The best place to start is to get a preapproval initiated. Talk to a mortgage specialist so they can assess your situation and take a look at your financial picture to determine what mortgage amount you can qualify for. This process will provide you with a price range you can work within when shopping around for a property. To complete the pre-approval, the mortgage specialist will require a few things from you. These include employment/income verification, confirmation of down payment funds and closing costs and your assets and your liabilities. As well, they will obtain a record of your credit history. If the pre-approval amount doesn’t meet your expectations, there may be options they can offer you to make changes to your financial picture which could potentially increase the mortgage amount you can qualify for.

It is important to seek out a mortgage expert who will take the time to assess your individual situation and one who has your best interests in mind to ensure you are in the right place for home ownership, or to change your home ownership situation. Once your pre-approval is in place, you can start shopping around for a property that fits within your price range. When you find the one and decide to make an offer, you will be required to put down a deposit. This will come from the down payment funds that were verified during the pre-approval stage, so it is important to ensure you have that cash on hand. If the offer is accepted, then a copy will be sent to your mortgage specialist to obtain final mortgage approval. Once all the conditions have been removed, your mortgage specialist will make arrangements for you to sign the mortgage documentation. This will then be sent to a lawyer with instructions to finalize the transaction, so you will need to choose a lawyer and provide your mortgage specialist with their contact information. Sometimes the mortgage process moves along quickly; at other times it can take longer. Regardless of how long it takes, it will all be worth it in the end when you are in the home of your dreams.

HOME

LIBRARY that Works for

YOU A written history has been part of our culture for thousands of years.

BY TRINA ANNAND

A

fter the invention of the Gutenberg Printing Press in the 1400s made mass production of books possible, people have amassed large collections of them. There was a time when a home library was a necessity, it not only displayed a person’s knowledge, but also spoke of their thirst for experience. With the advent of the minimalistic lifestyle and eBooks, you may wonder if the home library has become less popular, but according to Fran Underwood, senior interior designer at Underwood and Moore, the home library is enjoying a rebirth in the modern home.

FineHomes

Regina

43

Stemming from the mentality of everything in its place, the modern home library is the ultimate storage solution and décor statement at the same time. Underwood says she has seen a rise in the number of clients looking for home libraries. “People are still looking for ways to keep books. The home library has been downsized just like every other room. My clients are struggling to find ways to accommodate what they want to keep; they have attached a lot of memories to items they have collected. A bookshelf is not just a place to store books anymore,” remarks Underwood. Decorative accessories, mementos and photo albums have all made their way into the modern library. Homeowners looking for

a dramatic statement can create a full floor-to-ceiling wall of books, removing the need for a dedicated library room. “Books from the past tell us something about where we’ve been, contemporary books tell us who we are now,” says Marlo MacKay, communications coordinator for Dalhousie Libraries. “In the future, our books will give people the impression of what it was like to live in this time. Traditional books still very much have their place. I can’t get an author to sign my eReader.” Electronic readers do have their place; after all, it would be physically impossible for someone to carry around hundreds or even thousands of books. Unlike physical books, eReaders lack a multi-sensory experience; you cannot sit

down with a digital device, feel the paper between your fingers, smell the age of the book and read annotations made in pencil by previous generations of readers. When a library is created in a family home it serves an important function, it brings a family together. Without having each person’s books scattered around the house, interaction happens, creating a reading space in this busy world of after school activities and texting is fundamental. “Each book is like a friend because I’ve connected with it on a deep level. I think for people who have children in their home it’s especially important to have books around. When I was a child we always had books and I know that fostered a love of reading,” says MacKay.

“The more kids we can get to fall in love with reading, the lower illiteracy rates will be.” Reading with children is not only a way to make time for family, but an educational process ensuring a great future for a child. Now bookcases come in all shapes and sizes, and a variety of materials, wood, glass, metal, plastic, the possibilities are limitless. For those without a vast collection of books, there are minimalistic options that hang on a wall, invisibly giving the sense of books that are hovering, another bookcase creates the illusion that books are simply stacked on one another until they touch the sky. Today’s modern aesthetics are as much about the beauty of the stored items as

the storage solutions themselves. Rather than organizing books in traditional alphabetical format, a rainbow of colour can be created by pairing colours together, creating a design statement. If hiding books is the order of the day, simple or ornate doors can hide the visual clutter and present a blank wall to the eye. “Regardless of the size of your space, you can create a storage solution for books. You need to make use of every available corner; a lot of people don’t think to use the full height of rooms. Books often pass from generation to generation and they tend to pile up. The key to incorporating a library into a home is to pick the books you love and make a home for them,” says Underwood.

No matter what a person’s personal style is, or the space in a home, there is always room for a good book. “My home library tells a story. Upon seeing my bookcase you might be able to guess what I was like, if you had never met me. It is important to keep the books that have touched you in some way, books that make you laugh, cry and have changed you. And most importantly, books that are connected to memories and people,” notes MacKay. A home library is far more than a way to organize a home, it is a way to make and share memories, the perfect space to spend a rainy day. Give it a chance, and it can become the heart of a home.

MODULAR HOMES BUILT TO YOUR SPECIFICATIONS BY APOLLINE LUCYK PHOTOS CALVIN FEHR

ave you ever had a house built for you? If so, you know that endless complications can arise during the building process which can greatly increase the stress of an already monumental project. Problems finding contractors, cost overruns, construction delays, move-in delays and banking issues are only some of the complications that can surface when building a house. There is, however, a way you can avoid many of these problems and still end up with a beautifully built new home. Dufferin Homes in Moose Jaw, Sask. sells affordable, quality Canadian-built ready-to-move homes and commercial buildings to customers all over

Saskatchewan. Owned and run by fatherand-son team, Glen and Roger Blager, Dufferin homes works closely with two modular homebuilding companies — Triple M Housing Ltd. in Lethbridge, Alta. and Grandeur Housing in Winkler, Man. — to construct high quality, modularbuilt homes and structures for both urban and rural customers. Thanks to their connection with these two distinct modular homebuilding companies, Dufferin Homes offers a wide variety of modular-built homes and commercial structures, which can be made to fit most specifications you require. “Seventy-five per cent of our business is to farms and acreages for

acreage or ranch-style homes. The recreational cottage market and also the small commercial prebuilt office market are really taking off lately. We are also seeing an increased interest for infill housing in the cities and have done six homes right in Regina,” comments Roger. All Dufferin Homes are built to National Building Code standards, and both of the manufacturers they work with construct all their buildings and structures 100 per cent indoors, assuring high quality materials are used. Dufferin Homes offers a wide variety of residential and commercial models which come “ready to go” with appliances, along with other standards such as window

In today’s fast-paced society and all the responsibilities that pull us in different directions, the last thing you want to worry about is delayed building processes and unfixed prices on such a significant project. With Dufferin Homes, you can avoid much of this and purchase a high quality home with far less headache and hassle. The team at Dufferin Homes are professional and very dedicated to their clients, from the initial sale through to the delivery of your home. They love to see their clients fully happy with their new homes, and are always available

to answer questions and help with decisions along the way. Thanks to their commitment, Dufferin Homes is an A+ Member of the Better Business Bureau. As one happy client remarks, “This year I purchased a ready-to-move home through Dufferin Homes in Moose Jaw. I could not be more pleased with my new home. Robbyn in sales is so helpful and patient. The moving crew is fearless (my home site is up a steep hill). Jack and his crew make sure everything is in place after your home arrives. I would recommend Dufferin Homes to anyone interested in purchasing a quality, affordable home.”

here are many occasions when a delivery service comes in handy. Sometimes you are not physically able to lift the contents of a load; sometimes your vehicle isn’t large enough. Sometimes you just don’t have the time. Maybe you’d rather avoid a yard of topsoil dirtying up your vehicle. Or maybe it is as simple as wanting to use a professional mover to ensure your valuables arrive in excellent condition. Whatever your reason, Trevor Coderre of Hello Delivery ensures your belongings are protected every step of the way.

For more than 10 years, Coderre has been hauling and delivering large and small loads with a smile. He is a Regina native. His rates are reasonable and his service is top notch. “I love meeting new people. I love going the extra mile,” he says. “I am the end of the line; dealing with me guarantees that your haul will be taken care of as if you were doing the work yourself. We are predominantly a home delivery service. You buy an appliance, a piece of furniture or home electronics, and we will take care

of the rest. We will pick up your purchase and deliver it to your door.” Coderre has trusted partnerships with reputable local businesses such as Gilroy’s, Krazy Kileys, Maytag, Franny’s and Fiorante Floors & Home Furnishings, but does not place any limitations on where he will go to pick up or deliver a load. “Summer is coming. EXPERTAdvice Purchasing Property: What’s Important?

comfortably and happily for years? Does it have good potential for equity growth of your real estate investment?

Rick Roland, B.Ed., BA, REALTOR® Royal LePage Regina Realty 3889 Arcola Ave East 306.591.0163 www.rickroland.ca www.reginahomesales.ca rroland@sasktel.net

For the nest scenario, the purchase focus should be your family’s present and future needs. Is there enough space for bodies and accumulated belongings? Four bedrooms will usually accommodate three kids plus a parent or two, but don’t forget to account for bikes, sleighs, hockey equipment and Barbie doll houses, as well as space for kids, pets and tired parents. Choose a neighbourhood with people you would like to associate with. Check out police statistics for safety and the nature of reported crimes in the area. Interview neighbours after you have fallen in love with a home, but before you “tie the knot.” Find out what your potential next door neighbour thinks about the area.

P

You may have to pay a little more for the home that has everything. Some people walk away from their perfect home because they didn’t get it at “their” desired price. While you shouldn’t pay more than you can afford, you may have to stretch to purchase the home that has everything you are seeking. Alternatively, you may decide to scale down the wish list to keep within budget.

The most significant yet easy step is determining what is important to you. Why are you buying a property? Is it to own the perfect nest where you (and your family) can live safely, securely,

Those who want the dream home that has it all and appears to have good potential for equity growth should be prepared for a careful and thorough home search. Look also for the good deal: the “ugly duckling” into which you can inject

cash and sweat equity to turn a profit when selling. Be conscious of your skill and expertise level when setting yourself up for projects. Put a dollar value on the personal time it will require. Be accurate when costing materials and contracting. Discuss with your mortgage broker the possibility of getting renovation costs added to the initial mortgage so that the project can be totally funded at the onset and not taken out of savings. Under-funded projects often result in unhappiness. Weigh out the importance of equity growth, safety, security, comfort and happiness elements. What would you not want to compromise on? Determine the affordability factor. Know the upper limit of your abilities, and understand the risks of stretching yourself to the limits. Things such as change in health, job security, marital relationships and the world economy all happen. Don’t base decisions on catastrophic possibilities, but be realistic about what the future could hold. A mortgage should be viewed differently than other consumer debt; it is essentially a type of forced-savings program. The entire mortgage payment is coming out of your bank account, but only the interest portion is going “out the window.” It is a cost of home ownership. The principal portion of your monthly payment is building equity in your home. This, plus any growth in the property’s value will be available when you sell. Happy house hunting!

Extra insulation and careful air sealing are additional features you will find in your R-2000 home. Water-saving faucets, showers and toilets, as well as the use of recycled materials, assist in keeping the ecofootprint at a minimum. For indoor air quality, R-2000 home builders use products that are focused on the reduction of air pollutants. This is done by using such materials as approved paints, varnishes and finishes.

Spring CLEANING: Start the Season Fresh BY APOLLINE LUCYK

Spring cleaning can be one of the most refreshing and rewarding activities you undertake all year. Consider these tips to help you get through the process.

64

FineHomes

Regina

Declutter front entrance, pantry and workspaces every spring.

De-clutter high-traffic areas Maria Nagel from Simply Stowed Custom Closets recommends that your front entrance, pantry and workspaces be de-cluttered and reorganized every spring. Nagel fields many calls about creating customized storage for front entrances. “Everyone’s kind of bombarded by the amount of items in their entryways. It’s okay in the winter, because people only have one or two pairs of boots,” she says. But we need better storage systems in place to contain all our summer shoes, because “people get tired of the dirt.” Above all, don’t clutter your front entryway with shoes you no longer wear; they only collect more dirt and mess your home. The pantry is another important area to clean in spring. Deep freezes should be sorted through as well. We tend to collect extra canned goods, food items and noodles, and if we’re not careful, our pantries fill up with unneeded items with overdue expiry dates. Come spring, make note of all items and dispose of those that have passed their expiration date. Closets also need spring organization and cleanout. We all have shoes and dresses bought on a whim, and some still have the tags still intact. Free up some much-needed space by taking these items to the local consignment store or Salvation Army. Don’t ignore your desk with discarded dried-up pens, loose receipts and paperwork that have accumulated over the months. This will this refresh your workspace and may even expose some misplaced paperwork!

Pat recommends that before you begin to clean your house for dust and grime, you should change your furnace filter every three months. “If your furnace filter is not changed, it will start pumping dust and dirt out into your house, so it’s very important to change it before you do your spring cleaning,” she recommends. Sharla from Tidy Time Saver Professional House Cleaning Service notes that blinds are also important to clean throughout the year, and can easily get missed. “Blinds are a huge area for germs and allergens to collect,” Sharla remarks. Both Pat and Sharla recommend that you focus first on your kitchen and bathrooms, areas where the most germs collect. Pat also recommends cleaning from the top down. Dust and grime fall downwards, so starting at the top will

prevent you from needing to re-clean areas. Get behind furniture, and into the nooks and crannies that you don’t usually clean.

Why hire professional cleaners or organizers? Spring cleaning can be a daunting task. If you are tight on time, or simply don’t have the inclination, a professional cleaning company can be a real life saver. “The real benefit of hiring professionals is that you don’t have to lift a finger,” says Sharla. “And we know exactly where the dust collects, and can clean it efficiently. We can be in and out in a few hours.” Consider hiring a professional cleaning or home organization service or both. You’ll gain more personal and family time in a fresh, clean and organized home. Who doesn’t want that?

Clean for dust and dirt “Spring is the time when we get to finally open all our windows after the winter,” remarks Pat from Just Maid Time. After months of being shut inside our houses, it is important to do a thorough cleaning to remove all the dust and grime that has collected over the winter.

Remember the pantry. They can fill up with unneeded items with overdue expiry dates

clay soil may eventually seep through the basement wall. Or, as the clay soil gets wet and swells and then dries, powerful forces crack basement walls and floors,” and these cracks can let water into your basement.

Regina’s Peculiar Soil Problem

The City of Regina’s website states that Regina’s heavy clay soil can contribute to basement flooding in two ways. It can block the flow of water away from the building’s backfill zone, and it can swell and crack concrete walls and flooring. It explains: “Water trapped between the basement wall and the undisturbed

While 2011 and 2012 were very wet years, 2013 was unusually dry, and therefore the gumbo has now retracted greatly, causing the outer walls in many basements to sink. Wet gumbo can cause problems, but excessive dryness can, too. It is important to maintain relatively stable moisture levels around the foundation of your house.

Regina is built on an ancient lake bed. Because of this, the ground in the Regina area absorbs water easily and shifts almost continually throughout the year. This soil, commonly referred to as gumbo soil or native clay, is technically called sodium bentonite. “Ten grams of this clay

repair company brings an engineer to inspect the damage and draw up a plan for repair and prevention. The foundation crew will then return to install several steel beams vertically against the wall to hold it in place against further damage.

2. Knee or Pony Walls A slightly more substantial procedure, these walls are only used in basements that cannot be repaired by wall bracing. Some older basements were built with cindercrete blocks, bricks or even with stones, and wall bracing is insufficient to fix the problems. In these cases, a new concrete wall is poured on the inside of the existing basement wall to brace it and support the home.

Preventative Measures Although there is no sure way of protecting your basement from these various problems, there are measures you can take to prevent, or at least postpone, issues from arising. The most important preventative measure to secure your house from basement flooding is to ensure that the moisture level in the soil around the foundation does not get too high or too low. Bauer and Obleman recommend that your eavestroughs, leaders and downspouts are kept clean, and drain the water far from your house.

It is also wise not to have much foliage around your home’s foundation, adds Bauer. “Trees and shrubs can become snow traps during the winter, and in the summer they take away moisture from your foundation, making your foundation walls weaker,” he advises. Extra snow accumulation can lead to excess water around your house when the snow melts. If you encounter serious basement problems, the following options can help to make your basement structurally sound.

1. Basement Wall Bracing Basement wall bracing is a common service to restore and strengthen your basement. When required, the foundation

3. Exterior Dig-outs and Waterproofing In cases of serious moisture problems, a basement may require waterproofing. This process involves digging around the foundation, repairing the outside of the wall, sealing it and covering it in a waterproof membrane. Weeping tile is then installed and the space around the house is backfilled with rock and sand; the gumbo dug out from around your house is put on the last two feet, creating a watershed. While basement problems exist in the Queen City, take heart — there are solutions to reclaim them.

Doing Your Basement Repairs Right…

solid foundation is something that is crucial these days, whether it is for a relationship, a sports franchise, financial institution or your home. AAA Solid Foundation Repair is a firm believer in this premise and regards your home as your “castle.” AAA Solid Foundation Repair, consecutive Consumer Choice Award winners for 2013 and 2014, works to determine what is in the client’s best interests. Dale Obleman, coowner of the company with 30-years-plus experience in the industry, has a personal motto: “same problem, different address,” implying the company has encountered many different basement scenarios.

70

FineHomes

In the foundation business for more than 20 years, AAA has built their business upon some highly regarded principles that are prevalent in any successful enterprise. They recommend that consumers understand the importance of working with a reputable contractor that satisfies a list of guidelines. AAA Solid Foundation Repair is a registered business with the City of Regina. They are an A- plus member of the Better Business Bureau of Saskatchewan and have the necessary insurance to protect both their employees’ and customers’ best interests. Furthermore, they recommend that potential clients

ask for references for work from past customers. Steve Bauer, Obleman’s partner, suggests “if your contractor cannot provide references for a job, either they have not done very good work in the past or have a past in which they have not done much work at all.” Both owners agree that the market for basement contractors has greatly increased, and that people in need of basement repairs should do their homework on who is doing their contracting. Every homeowner is entitled to having projects completed properly the first time rather than paying twice to redo inferior work.

Experience Peace of Mind with “FAILSAFE” BASEMENT REPLACEMENT PHOTOS HENRY GODNITZ

I

f you live in a home with a basement in the Regina area, you know that our clay-based soil wreaks havoc on foundations. While construction standards vary over time and location, it is safe to say that a majority of local basements will need serious work. Many will need replacement. Eight years ago, a Regina home in the midst of a basement replacement collapsed as the cribbing and wooden beams supporting it broke away. Fortunately, nobody was hurt, but the home was left beyond repair. This particular incident triggered inventor, Monty Wensel, to establish Failsafe Basement Replacement & House Lifting Inc. He recognized the need for a safer, more secure method of lifting homes and suspending them.

72

FineHomes

Regina

Failsafe utilizes its own innovative “Atlas” house lifting system, and has completed more than 100 successful lifts in North America since 2007. Now in the fifth generation of development, the Atlas HLS 5.0 (patent pending) provides tradespeople unencumbered access when demolishing and replacing basements. The emphasis on safety provides peace of mind to those who live in the home and those working beneath it. For the typical homeowner, the task of replacing the basement of their home is a daunting proposition. If the owner acts as the general contractor, there is a significant amount of specific knowledge and information they will need. Coordinating the procedure and booking various tradespeople is also a challenge. In addition, there is the anxiety of having your home

supported by stacks of wood cribbing. Failsafe Basement Replacements & House Lifting offers premium ICF basement replacement packages beginning at $80,000 for a modest sized home. Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) construction for the basement walls results in a superior build quality, will greatly improve thermal efficiency, and will actually increase both the value and livability of your home. By including an exterior entrance and a nine-foot ceiling, a basement can be converted into a comfortable, revenue-generating suite. Infloor radiant heat is also a popular option. According to Cameron Wensel, sales manager, Failsafe strives to put clients at ease during a potentially stressful procedure: “We’ve gone to great lengths

with our educational and marketing material, which is now featured on the new website. There are explanations of the process, the Atlas HLS 5.0 equipment and some of the options clients will want to consider when replacing a basement.” “Everyone has different needs: some want a basic basement, some want a walk-in suite, and some with a bungalow on a crawlspace want to add both a basement and a main story addition to triple their living space,” adds Wensel. “We encourage anyone even considering a basement replacement to have a look at the web site. It may spark a creative idea or answer a question you didn’t know you had. ard work is all he knows. He practices his craft with great skill. He is a craftsman. JD (Gyslain) Gaudreau of JD Drywall Ltd. has been honing his technique for over 32 years, skills he inherited from both his dad and uncle, who did the same line of work before him. With the many changes occurring in the trades, JD separates himself by doing everything by hand — no tape guns or bazookas. Top drywall installation involves planning and selecting the right length drywall for the each job. From

start to finish, JD brings hard work and expertise to ensure seamless installation. Some may say his approach is “old school,” but this allows him the freedom to put more detail into his work. In 2014, JD hopes to expand and grow his business — one craftsman at a time. “We’re living in a great economy. There is a lot of new development construction in Regina. I will take on any job and I’ll find a way to make it work. We do all sorts of drywall, taping, sanding… even textured ceilings.”

Regina’s strong economic performance will translate to a job growth of approximately 2.3 per cent in 2014. With a focus on detail, JD hopes to capitalize on that growth. “I like working,” he says. “I’ll take whatever comes my way.” Both in and out of town, JD specializes in basement projects, but can do any type of drywall work. He does everything from new home construction to renovations to garage work. No job is too big or small. “Ninety per cent of my customers come from word-of-mouth referral. My business is mostly referrals,” JD says with pride. His customers appreciate his hard work and trusted approach to business — and the fact that JD Drywall Ltd is a family-run business. JD is the owner/operator; his wife, Sandra, is the bookkeeper; and his brother, Joel, also works with him. Daughter, Deena, and son, Marcus, help with clean up on job sites. CONDOLIVING What’s In It For Me? BY ALYSSA RUDYCK

T

here is a common misconception that the word condo refers exclusively to a privately owned apartment unit. In fact, the term condominium is actually a legal definition that refers to a type of ownership — not a type of structure. Condos can come in many different shapes and sizes, from apartments, row houses and townhouses to duplexes, bungalows, and even mobile homes. Condo ownership means owning the interior space of a dwelling, with the

78

FineHomes

Regina

freedom to renovate and decorate as you please; it also means sharing the exterior elements — including hallways, elevators and recreational facilities — with every other owner in the building, as well as a managing entity. Whether condo living is the right environment for you largely depends on your lifestyle. It is ideal for people with hectic schedules or those who spend a significant amount of time away from home because it requires less time commitment than owning a house. Condo

owners do not own the exterior of their home, and therefore are not required to maintain their yard. Certain chores are supplied for residents, such as grass cutting and snow and leaf removal, since these sections are considered common areas. In some cases, services also include interior maintenance, such as plumbing, heating and electrical problems. Condo ownership can be a great first step for first-time homeowners such as young couples, students, single professionals or anyone else ready to

leave rental properties, but not quite fiscally prepared for the mortgage on a starter house. As an added bonus, condo ownership gives inexperienced homeowners the chance to gradually learn how to properly manage their home, without being overwhelmed or intimidated by having the full responsibly thrust on them all at once. Condo life is also ideal for current homeowners who are looking to downsize. These individuals may be empty-nesters or retirees looking to transition into a smaller space, and simplify their lifestyle while retaining all the comforts of owning their own home. Along with having outdoor maintenance taken care, condos are also a great way to minimize housework, as they are generally less spacious and take less time to clean. Although condo living has been described as the best of both worlds because it gives people the advantage of home ownership without the hassles, there are many other advantages to condo living besides having your yard work done for you. Condo ownership can be fiscally rewarding. Condos are competitive in price and, because they come in all different shapes and sizes, are available at a wide range of prices, allowing those of moderate income to own their own dwelling. Although owners will most likely be subject to condo fees, they can potentially save money on maintenance fees, repairs and renovation costs. Another perk is that paying mortgage payments instead of rent is a contribution to your personal assets. With the potential to grow in equity, condos are not only a great way to save money before buying a house, but are a means of making money through resale or renting it out after you have moved on. Many condominium complexes include built-in amenities, such as exercise rooms, rec rooms, hot tubs, indoor or outdoor pools, saunas, tennis courts, community clubs and more. Condo fees contribute to these additional facilities, but who wouldn’t be willing to pay a little extra for a hot tub? Location, location, location. Again, because condos come in many different shapes, they can be found in many

different areas, including the heart of downtown or close to major shopping centres and malls. These are prime places to live, especially in larger cities, as they place young people close to the action, and older people within walking distance of most major amenities. Once you have decided that condo living is right for you, there are a few things to watch for while perusing the market. When evaluating a potential property, find out how much the monthly condo fees are, as these will likely be more expensive in buildings with additional amenities. Don’t live where you will be paying for access to facilities you aren’t going to use. Familiarize yourself with the condo board. Find out how they operate, and what you, as a homeowner, are responsible for. Ask about any conditions, such as pet

restrictions, age restrictions and rental restrictions. Find out if they have enough money in their reserve fund to cover the cost of all future maintenance issues, and whether costs for improvements are taken directly from this fund, or if you may be asked to contribute an additional sum of money to future development. Find out who your neighbours are going to be. While condo complexes can be a great way to meet new people and become part of a community, watch out for buildings where tenants seem particularly noisy, inconsiderate, or prone to leaving their old couch in your parking space. Lastly, assess whether or not the parking situation suits your needs by determining where residents are required to park and how many spots you would be given. Condo living has much to offer for those who choose it.

f all the rooms in your home, the master bedroom offers the greatest opportunity for rest and rejuvenation. It’s a place to ease the stresses of the day, indulge in self-care and discover a sense of calm amidst a busy life. From Egyptian sheets to en suite soaking tubs, options abound for transforming your sleeping space into a serene sanctuary.

Colour Me Peaceful A peaceful mood can be evoked with a colour palette that makes you feel relaxed. While cool shades such as blue, green and grey tend to evoke a calm feeling, warm colours such as red and yellow — while sometimes overstimulating — can make for a cozy atmosphere if used in moderation (used on just one wall or with accent pieces such as cushions.) Start by creating a colour file with images you gather online. Hone in on three to four colours you are most drawn to, then choose one as a base. From there you can build on the palette with similar hues, a contrasting tone (warm if your base is cool, and vice versa) and an accent shade. This palette will be your guide when choosing furniture, bedding, rugs and lighting. For walls that promote rest, consider using cool, light neutrals within your palette for a clean look that will help to clear your mind. Want to experiment before deciding? Paint a large square of each colour you’re considering on one wall, and keep the samples up for a few days, noting how the colours look at different times of day. Once you’ve

chosen, paint the entire wall that colour; if you’re still in love, you’ve likely found the perfect hue.

Blissful Bedding A bedding upgrade is the quickest way to a good night’s rest. If you don’t yet have a memory foam mattress, consider making the switch. Aside from being ultra-comfortable, memory foam helps to support the body and ease pain, which can minimize the amount you wake through the night. Even if you don’t opt for this particular style, it’s important to your sleep health to invest in a quality mattress that suits your needs. If your current mattress is over a decade old, you’re due for a new one! A down featherbed is the next step to bed bliss. This goes beneath your fitted sheet, creating a plush, billowy layer.

Window Coverings for Wellbeing When choosing window coverings, assess what kind of light the room has. If streetlights shine into it, you might opt for roller shades that manage light and control glare. If it’s bright in the morning (and the light wakes you earlier than you’d like) you’ll want ample coverage so you can sleep soundly. Window treatments such as silk drapery panels, pleated floor-to-ceiling drapes and sheer fabrics (all in your palette, of course) can add romance and luxury.

Adding Ambience to Your Walls Now it’s time to add more personality through wall decor. While patterned wallpaper is likely too busy for an entire room, one dramatic wall papered with a design that blends with your palette can bring interest and dimension to the space.

Another option (if you’re not ready for the full memory foam mattress upgrade) is a memory foam topper. Whatever you choose, make sure you flip and rotate the topper every three months to preserve its lifespan. For the ultimate sleep, try Egyptian bedding. It has the longest cotton fibers available, making sheets, blankets and pillowcases both strong and extremely soft, so you can drift into dreamland quickly and easily.

Luxury Lighting Nothing creates a soothing ambience as effectively as soft, sophisticated lighting. One option is to add wall sconces to either side of your bed’s headboard. From antique to modern, sconces are available in a range of styles, and can replace nightstand lamps, simultaneously decluttering your bedside table and framing your bed beautifully. Consider your overhead lighting to be both functional and mood-setting. A plain fixture can be given a stylish boost by covering it with a paper lantern or replacing it with an elegant chandelier. And don’t forget the power of candlelight! Try scented soy or beeswax candles for a natural dose of calm.

For artwork, choose imagery that relaxes rather than stimulates you. Naturethemed paintings typically evoke feelings of peace and serenity, and abstract art can loosen the mind, with a focus on colour and texture rather than detail. Have a favourite place you’ve travelled to? Choose a couple photos from the trip, and get them professionally framed or printed on canvas. Lastly, experiment

with hanging mirrors to reflect light and open up your bedroom. This will give you a feeling of relaxed expansiveness.

Serene Soaking An ideal bedroom sanctuary includes an en suite space to soak, where you can release tension and relax before bed. Soaking tubs come in four general styles. Free-standing includes the oldfashioned clawfoot and pedestal kind, as well as modern versions. Framed soaking tubs are supported by a wood or metal frame, and commonly seen in minimalist bathrooms. A drop-in soaking tub is designed for an enclosure that’s typically flush with the bathroom floor. Corner baths are generally larger than other soaking tubs, and work well in corners with windows, so you can enjoy natural light or starry views. Most of these soaking tubs are available with massage and bubble jets — a must for those who are serious about serenity. However you go about creating a more peaceful bedroom atmosphere, remember that proper rest is essential to your wellbeing. Approach this project with the knowledge that it’s an investment in your health and happiness, and get ready to unwind.

They have a steam shower to fit every home and budget with all their models ranging between

$4,000 and $7,000 – dramatically less than constructing one from scratch and so much easier to install. EAGO steam showers from Dynamic Bath & Shower come completely self-contained with stress-free, simple installation. They can be easily integrated into a new home build or even a renovation, as all steam shower panels will fit through existing standard doorways for ease of set up and installation. Additionally, a flexible drain connector is available that will meet any existing roughed-in plumbing. There is no extra expense for faucets, taps or shower heads; simply install and start enjoying immediately. Studies have shown that the use of steam showers can improve one’s health and wellbeing. Steam showers are beneficial to the respiratory system and immune system, removing harmful toxins from the body, providing relief from respiratory infections and reducing the incidence of snoring. Using

a steam shower after working out reduces the production of lactic acid, which stops sore muscles before they begin. Steam prevents skin from becoming dehydrated and itchy during the cold winter months. Deeply moisturizing, steam increases skin’s elasticity, reducing the appearance of age lines. “Essentially our steam showers are great showers with the ability to provide a wellness experience when you want one,” says Andy Reimer, sales and marketing representative for Dynamic Bath & Shower. Steam showers are great investments and raise the value of your home. Dynamic Bath & Shower’s EAGO steam showers can be purchased directly from their Thatcher Avenue location, at the Co-op Home Centre or through your home builder. For people wishing to incorporate a steam shower, massage tub or infrared sauna into their building plans, spec sheets are available online which can be sent directly to your homebuilder.

The American Journal of Public Health states, “The effects of steam induce a feeling of euphoria, relaxation, and tranquility.” Dynamic Bath & Shower offers affordable elegance and luxury that will enhance your health and well-being. As owners, Ike Dyck and Donna Stomp like to say, “We didn’t invent elegance. We just make it affordable.”

Functional

Kitchens

Designing a Kitchen that “WorKs” for You by Apolline lucyk

N

ever before have we had so many diverse options available for our kitchens. For this reason, it is more important than ever to take functionality into account when designing your new kitchen. Kitchens are one of the most important areas of our house, and as cooking becomes more of a family activity, kitchens are becoming bigger and busier. It is more important than ever to make sure your kitchen works for you.

Keep things off the counter One of the most important features of a functioning kitchen is ample counter space. For this reason, it is good to have niches and pull-outs to stow away your appliances. “More and more often people want to keep their appliances off the counter,” remarks Greg Huber from Kekuli Bay Cabinetry. “It is very rare now that we will build a kitchen with the microwave right on the counter. Usually it will be above the counter, and pull-out microwaves are becoming very popular.”

Don’t forget drawers Huber says that drawers have become one of the most popular features in modern kitchens, because of their convenience. “Today, everything’s in a drawer, if possible,” he says. “The days of having cabinets with doors around your kitchen are gone.” People are finding they don’t want to rummage around for the box of lasagne at the very back of the cupboard. Instead, they are opting for drawers and pull-outs in where everything is easily accessible. “It makes things so much more convenient,” he says. Huber notes that in the past, people had fewer drawers in their kitchens, but with the emergence of customizable drawers and pull-out options, they have really risen in demand. “Years ago, there would be a cutlery drawer, and maybe a couple other drawers in the kitchen. Today, everything’s a drawer, if possible, and we customize them based on what customers want to do with them.” He says that you can also put a pull-out

behind a cupboard door if you wish to have the look of a cupboard, but the convenience of a drawer.

Make room for extra hands Since cooking is becoming more of a group activity, people are planning their space to accommodate more people in the kitchen. “Prep sinks are becoming popular,” says Huber. “Traditionally it was always just a single sink mounted under the window. And that’s still happening. But often, if people have the space, they’ll incorporate a prep sink in another area of the kitchen, because kitchens aren’t just for one person anymore.” With a prep sink in another area of your kitchen, you can have separate work stations for different people working in the kitchen; this can be far more functional when there is more than one person working in the kitchen.

Invest in quality appliances There are many new kitchen appliances on the market to make your life easier, and your kitchen more productive. Huber says it’s remarkable how many new options people have in kitchen appliances every year. “Warming drawers are very handy, and have become quite popular in kitchens these days,” he remarks. “Cooktops paired up with built-in double ovens seem to be coming back, as well,” he notes. Huber also says that pull-out fridges have become very popular in the last few years for their convenience. A pull-out fridge is incorporated into your base cabinetry, either in the wall cabinetry or in an island. Greg says they can be incorporated as part of a secondary work station in the kitchen. Since there are so many useful appliances on the market, it is important to be confident you have found the best appliances to suit your kitchen and culinary needs. Most appliances can be worked into the cabinetry as well, for a more elegant or rustic look.

GRANITE OR QUARTZ COUNTERS ARE THE MOST POPULAR

Choose durable countertops Stone and quartz countertops are very popular at the moment due to their durability and high heat resistance. It is especially important to have countertops which are durable and heat-resistant in your kitchen, as they need to withstand regular use, and the occasional kitchen mishap. However, there are also other more excellent materials which can be installed for countertops such as laminate, butcher block, stainless steel, marble and concrete. These materials can be very durable and resistant as well, if properly cared for. It is useful to note that some surfaces allow an integrated sink for seamless look, while others require a surface mount or an under mount sink.

Find the right flooring Since kitchens are always so busy, they must withstand a lot of foot traffic, spills and scrapes. Thankfully, there is a diverse range of options to choose from these days that will help your kitchen function at its best.

WOOD IS A WARM AND WELCOMING LOOK

Do you want a wide range of colours and styles to choose from? If so, ceramic tiles may be your best bet. If you like the look of stone, porcelain tiles may be the way to go. Laminate is a great option for

kitchen will be. Huber says that top lighting is very important in kitchens, and pot lights are very popular nowadays; they do not collect dust, and are easier to clean than most light fixtures. Undercabinet lighting is also very popular: it helps illuminate your counter space. Over-counter lighting is also very popular in kitchens as a way to dress up your cabinets and get more light into the kitchen.

busy families, as they stand up well to scratches and stains. Meanwhile, wood is consistently in style and gives kitchens a warm and welcoming look, while cork is becoming increasingly popular because it’s nice to walk on. Other options include natural stone, concrete, vinyl, linoleum and laminate. Be sure to consider and evaluate the pros and cons of each style before committing to a type of flooring.

or 20 years, the Cupboard Brothers — Ken and Kim Kowalchuk — have been building top-quality custom cabinets for homeowners and builders around the province. What started out as a two-person operation quickly grew into a thriving business. Today, Cupboard Brothers employs a staff of approximately 45 skilled people, offering the latest in computer and manufacturing technology in the industry. Over the years, Cupboard Brothers has acquired a reputation for building a topquality product that is competitively

priced. How are they able to do this? Ken explains that everything is built on site in their processing plant at 1333 Park Street in Regina. “Nothing is outsourced. We’re not stuck to a catalogue,” he adds. As custom cabinet builders, Cupboard Brothers are happy to take on any project you have for them. Whether you are building a new home or doing renovations, the staff will sit down with you and design the cabinetry that will best fit your lifestyle. Imagine owning beautiful high-quality cabinets that are designed to your specifications. Elegant,

detailed and stunning: your cabinets will serve you well for as long as you own your home. Ken points out that every aspect of the cabinet is built to last for years to come. The cabinet boxes are entirely made from 5/8-inch materials, including the backs. This reinforces the durability of the cabinet. “A lot of cabinet companies will use 1/4-inch thick centre door panels, but we use 3/8 inch. So, it’s very, very rigid and prevents the doors from warping and twisting,” he affirms.

The Cupboard Brothers’ high quality custom cabinetry is not limited to kitchens and bathrooms. “We also offer customized closet solutions,” Ken comments. Cupboard Brothers can design beautiful and unique closet units that will keep you organized and make your room look stunning. For the garage and workshop, Cupboard Brothers builds strong and sturdy cabinets that are stylish and functional. The attitude of continuous learning and constant improvement allows the Cupboard Brothers to look at the manufacturing process and develop newer, more efficient techniques. This allows the quality of the product to remain high, while keeping a competitive cost for the customer. As Cupboard Brothers continues to grow and develop, so does their product line. Introducing an exciting new “DIY” product line has opened the doors for new consumers to experience the Cupboard Brothers’ quality. Perfect for the smaller contractors, or customers wanting to do it themselves, this new product may be shipped anywhere in the province. Conveniently available online, you still get the Cupboard Brothers’ quality and competitive price. “The difference between our DIY product line and anywhere else is that we’re still providing the same cabinet quality and finish as you would see on our custom product,” says Ken. Do you have a lot of building projects on the go? Ask about their Builders’ Advantage to receive further discounts. Whether looking for something custom built or a DIY project, you can trust Cupboard Brothers to offer you style, selection and quality. DRESSING THE FIFTH &

Sixth Walls BY MEREDITH HERON

I

see the effort people often expend in choosing the perfect wall colour, but all too often they miss the opportunity to dress their fifth and sixth walls: floors and ceilings. For that matter, there is nothing I love more than adding a bit of unexpected to a ceiling or a floor. Ironically, I find it easy to convince clients to adorn a child’s ceiling in either a nursery or a toddler’s room — less so in other areas — but they are always game to dress these rooms up.

the remaining walls. I tend not to do this with just paint; I prefer it to be a paper or a pattern using paint-like striping. This is for the little lady above brother’s room, so we painted the stripes on the ceiling to liven things up a bit.

| If you paint your walls a deep colour, you

|

may not want to leave your ceilings a pure white. We often soften our ceiling colours a bit and use a chalky white or opt for a different colour altogether. This makes the transition less jarring and keeps the room feeling bigger and more open. People often ask me whether or not they paint their crown moulding the same as the wall colour or make the ceiling colour different altogether. I tend to match my crown to the ceiling unless I’m opting for a different colour on the ceiling. In that case, I make sure my crown and my trim match so that the ceiling colour will stand out. Once you’ve addressed your ceilings, look down to the floors. Area rugs are a great way to lessen the bowling-alley feel if you have hardwood floors, although I often get people who claim they want to see their floors — their big ticket investment item. I usually point out that the contrast of an area rug on the floor will only serve to highlight the flooring and do double duty to anchor the furniture arrangement, which is always more pleasing to the eye. There are so many options for area rugs these days; indulge me as I share a few of my own favourites.

Ideally, when papering a ceiling, the room should have crown moulding. I don’t always stick to this, but it really does yield a much more impactful finished product.

| In this space, we added a hand-blocked

wallpaper to a nursery for a sweet young lady. The bonus is that it really is only one wall of wallpaper, so it requires a minimal investment. I am not a fan of accent walls unless they are ceilings or if they make sense in the architectural layout of the room. I’m willing to concede a headboard wall, for example, but you have to make sure that you have achieved balance on

FineHomes

|

In this two-storey living room, we needed to make the seating area feel more intimate and inviting. We opted for a custom-designed hide area rug. The Align rug is part of my new exclusive collection of rugs. It’s a tone-on-tone hide, and the geometric pattern adds some life to the arrangement without being overly bossy. It both grounds the space and keeps it feeling open and airy — no easy task!

|

We wanted to have fun in this foyer. The clients love colour, and they are not shy and retiring in their choice to adorn the walls in a deep magenta. We knew that opting for a bold colour on the walls meant we had to balance it out with a statement piece for our area rug. Our Max rug does just that. We’ve married it with this custom daybed in lieu of a regular bench/ console unit and then pumped it up with our pillow story. I love to make bold statements in a foyer; transition spaces are where risks can be taken. Pattern and colour on either a ceiling or a floor require minimal commitments and are easy to change. Wallpaper these days is not made the same way as in the past, nor is it as traumatic to remove it or change it up. We always recommend hiring a professional installer to prepare your walls and hang your paper, and warn that if you are inclined to do it yourself, to never do it with your spouse; more divorces happen because of cowallpapering attempts!

s there a fresh colour palette that you may have never considered? Furniture placement you never thought possible? Decorative accents that make you smile everytime you lay eyes on them? How about window dressings that magically create uncomplicated sensibility, yet sexy, style?

This is the Imagination of hnh designs People often think that hiring an interior designer is expensive, an extravagance they cannot afford. However, what you might not realize is that not only will hiring a designer help your vision of your future or current home become a reality, it can ultimately save you money. Indecision, self-doubt and being overwhelmed almost always results in overspending and dissatisfaction. This is where a good designer can guide you to achieve spectacular results.

Kerri Ermel of hnh designs is “THAT” designer What sets Kerri apart from other interior designers is how much she values her customers and caters to them. She is happy to help you with as much of your interior design as you wish, from simply giving suggestions in a one-time consultation to taking your project right to completion. Kerri moved to Regina in 2007 after working as a registered nurse and owning a design and custom window covering business in Estevan for several years. After settling in Regina, she worked as a designer for Alford’s before reopening her company, hnh designs inc. Kerri associates and has worked with many professionals around the city, and can recommend trusted contractors and suppliers, if need be. Along with design and decor services, hnh also offers custom Hunter Douglas blinds, as well as custom drapery, bedding and accessories.

Kind Words that Keep Kerri Rolling... “Given the positive experiences we had with Kerri on two previous projects, we didn’t even consider looking for alternative services; our first and only call was to Kerri. She was integral to the design and development of our new home from the start of the blueprint design to the completion of the finishing touches.” —Sean Wallace, Calgary, Alta. OPPOSITE Kerri Ermel

Kerri has a sense of adventure and an entrepreneurial spirit, qualities which led her to the creation of hnh designs.” —Robin Endsin, Regina, Sask. “Our experience with Kerri has been nothing short of wonderful! Our very first meeting to create window treatments left us breathless and appreciative of her brilliant design. Kerri demonstrates an impressive level of expertise and professionalism. Her clarity on what the space requires for the best outcome is educational, inspirational and invigorating. Entertainment UNITS FINDING THE PERFECT PIECE BY TRINA ANNAND

106

FineHomes

Regina

A

s our culture advances so does our methods of entertainment. It seems like every day there is a new bigger and better TV: 20-inch floor model TVs have given way to 50- and even 80inch 3D smart TVs that come with all sorts of different accessories. As a result of all the technology we need better ways to organize it; it is no longer simply a matter of plugging in a TV. When an entertainment system has been completely customized to your every need, why shouldn’t the unit that houses it? “Storage is very important in the modern open plan home because you can see any clutter from multiple spaces. A custombuilt unit can be versatile and funky, and with the right craftsman at your side the piece can become a timeless heirloom,” notes Chantelle Butterfield of Funktional Space. Butterfield also points out that it is important to design a custom unit intuitively. In recent years we have had a very steep technology shift. Use adjustable shelves where possible when designing your piece for a more one-of-a-kind look. Units can have custom-sized lit shelves that can hold precious mementos or decorative items for display. With today’s larger TVs and homes, a completely built-in entertainment wall can often be the solution for accommodating even the largest TV. With wall-to-wall shelving, home owners can keep a home neat and tidy; whether enclosed or not, shelves can store anything from electronics and DVDs to books and toys. Butterfield has a simple tip for anyone looking to buy or build an entertainment unit: always remember to measure your electronics. A large TV on a small unit can look top heavy or be unstable, and electronics don’t often fit in standard-sized shelving. Custom units don’t need to only inhabit the family room, they are equally at home in a bedroom or even the patio with TVs made to last outside. Just imagine catching your favourite show under the stars. For those with a more restricted budget, Butterfield notes there are a number of great ready-made options. “Custom isn’t the only option. A lot of people are opting for store-bought pieces or mounting their TVs on the wall. You can achieve a modern, sleek look or a rustic, cozy look with this option. A long low glass piece

or even a wood antique piece can create that perfect style to fit in your home.” A common trend for the last few years has been to mount a TV above a fireplace so that a room’s focal points are not split. The problem with this is that it is not comfortable for prolonged periods; the right layout can accentuate both your fireplace and a beautiful entertainment unit. In 2014 homeowners can expect to see more white tones, warm greys and

real wood, Butterfield notes. She also emphasizes that it’s important to not get stuck on trends. “People often pick very trendy styles and finishes, but it’s important to remember that trends have a shelf life. Something that is fantastic now might look cheap and dated in a few years. Buy pieces that you truly love and that are high quality. An entertainment unit can be one of the best investments you make for your décor,” she remarks.

WALK-IN

BATHTUBS & SHOWERS BY SHELL BUSEY

A

lot of homeowners — especially those who are having mobility issues — have asked my opinion of walk-in bathtubs and showers. I’m not really in a position to be advising people as to what they should or should not have, but I do have an opinion which I will share with you in this column. When dealing with walk-in bathtubs and showers, I’d like to give you a “heads up” on a few items that you should be aware of and research if you are considering either of these options to help ease mobility issues. Let’s talk about walk-in bathtubs. This is the type of tub where you open the door, sit down and fill it with water. As you can appreciate, while you’re sitting in the tub waiting for it to fill up with water, you could require a little more heat in the room (for example, radiant heat on the wall) to keep you warm while the tub is filling.

108

FineHomes

Regina

When you are in the tub, what is keeping the temperature of the tub at a comfortable level? Some of these tubs have elaborate controls and systems to keep the water warm. Is there a bladder where the water will go, then be preheated and re-circulated in the tub? These items are most likely optional, but keep in mind there will be good, better and best walk-in tubs available to you. What happens when the water is being drained out? Keep in mind that you have to leave the door closed and stay in the tub while the water drains. How will you rinse yourself off? These tubs are a considerable investment, so make sure you are satisfied with the answers you are receiving. You may have to enlarge your existing bathtub drain to accommodate the drainage for the new walk-in tub. If the plumbing has to be moved to install the tub, make sure a permit is issued. If you live in a townhouse or condo building, you will need to first check with your strata council or management

company to ensure that you are approved to install a walk-in tub in your unit. There are alternative solutions available such as bathtub conversion kits, which will convert your present bathtub into an accessible one. You can also have a custom safety seat bench to provide safe transfer into the bathtub and for safe seating. You may want to consider a roll-in/walkin shower. With all the jets you can have installed on the shower wall, personal hand-held showerheads, and built-in benches and safety hand rails, these showers can be a viable option to walkin bathtubs. I’m not negative about walk-in tubs, but I want to bring these items to your attention before you decide to make a sizeable investment. the finished product, which is why we pay a lot of attention to detail,” says Jean Duperreault, owner of Duperreault Renovation. Duperreault Renovation will take on any job, no matter the size. They can do everything from exterior maintenance, such as roofing, siding, landscaping, deck and patios, to window replacement. They also provide interior renovations and finishing services in bathrooms, kitchens and basements, including flooring and tiling. Although they don’t do major electrical work, the possibilities are endless as to what they can accomplish. “Any need — interior or exterior — we can look at it and provide a solution,” says Duperreault.

Before

Duperreault Renovation is comprised of Jean, and his son, who is a third year apprentice in the industry, and one other employee. They are joined by a handful of others during the busier seasons. Although his team is small, Duperreault considers their size to be an asset in many ways, enabling them to offer customers certain advantages that larger companies may not be able to provide. “Because we are a small company, we don’t have a lot of jobs on the go [at once], so, we can start a renovation project faster than most larger companies,” Duperreault explains. We are more flexible than large companies, as their deadlines are a lot more restrictive than ours. As well, we listen to our customers closely and can adjust the job as we go.” Duperreault explains that another advantage of being a smaller company is that they are able to spend more time with their clientele, allowing them to fully understand exactly what customers want. They counsel clients as much as possible on the best solution for their individual situation.

Before

“The whole concept behind what we are doing is to try and provide the client with a finished product that they would be proud to show off… which is why we try to do a lot of consultation with them,” says Duperreault. “If we are not in a position to satisfy the customer’s needs, we will suggest other companies who might be a better fit for them.”

RETROFIT YOUR HOME

and Bring Your Dreams to Life BY ALYSSA RUDYCK PHOTOS CALVIN FEHR

T

here are many different reasons to retrofit your home. Whether you have been living in the same house for 30 years and are in desperate need of an upgrade, or have just purchased a new house that needs a little “TLC” before it feels like home, retrofitting is a great way to upgrade your lifestyle by working with what you already have. Kris Pockett, owner

114

FineHomes

Regina

“Usually people are just looking to freshen things up and make [their home] more comfortable,” says Kris Pockett, owner of Kris Pockett Construction. “A lot of older homes don’t have much for lighting, and are always cold and damp. Now that homes have gone up in price, a lot of people are choosing to take equity out of their homes and reinvest it back into the house…

[which] usually means better lighting, better windows, better insulation, better flooring, nicer kitchens.” Pockett has been successfully retrofitting houses for the past six years with the help of his experienced team, who are capable of performing almost every aspect of a complete home renovation. This includes design concepts, framing, building, insulating, floor installation, painting, plumbing and electrical work.

Before

“We have completely gutted out homes and brought them back to life with all the modern comforts,” says Pockett, who explains that retrofitting does more than just add comfort and value to your home by updating it structurally and stylistically; it is also financially beneficial for anyone shopping for a new home. Instead of spending more money on a new house on a smaller lot, in an area that is still being developed, Pockett recommends buying an older, much more affordable house, on a bigger lot in a mature neighbourhood, with wider streets and taller trees, and then upgrading it to fit your lifestyle. “As long as the foundation is solid, you’re typically way further ahead financially retrofitting [an older] house than spending three times as much to get half the lot and two-thirds the house. Retrofitting easily pays for itself in that respect.” Pockett is happy to report that he has had many satisfied customers over the past six years. So many in fact, most of their business has come from referrals alone. He makes a point of doing very little sub trading, finding it more convenient for customers by saving them time and money.

Before

“Most people are very impressed [with us] along the way…and when they see the final product, that’s what blows them away,” Pockett remarks. “I enjoy the challenge of bringing these older houses back to life and making them productive again. That’s basically what it’s all about for me every day… I like to just come in and work with customers on designing a space and bringing their dreams to life. It’s a really nice feeling at the end, when you wipe up that last bit of paint and say ‘there you go,’ and walk away leaving them happy.” Kris Pockett Construction 2412 Parliament Ave Regina, SK 306.541.3046

O

ne of the challenges when choosing window coverings is envisioning how they will look on actual windows and function in your own home. With so many shades designed for specific light coverage, it’s helpful to see how natural light is filtered, and to test out various styles and systems.

Hunter Douglas, an industry innovator, provides full-sized working displays that enable you to see their latest colours, fabrics and operating systems, from ultra-glide retractable cords to remotecontrolled shades. A new, updated display showing these cutting-edge options is at Parkland Carpet One, with every system available to try. Customers interested in seeing the difference between LiteRise®, EasyRise™ and PowerRise® systems can sample the products for themselves, with an expert on hand to explain the variations. This is especially helpful for parents with young children, who are interested in child-safety options for their home. The display features optimal lighting, so you can see how light transfers through each kind of shade. Parkland Carpet One Floor and Home also showcases Hunter Douglas window coverings on windows throughout the store, allowing an understanding of what you can expect the products to look like at home.

Using these visual displays, choosing window coverings becomes much easier. There are a few steps you can take before embarking on the selection process that will help narrow your options even more. 1. Measure your windows, depth of the window and casings. Some shade styles work better with large windows, and some with smaller sizes. Having the dimensions on hand will help you choose the correct proportions, and order accordingly. 2. Note the light direction for the windows you want to cover, as well as the room’s function. An east-facing window will let in different morning light than a west-facing window, and bedrooms may require more coverage than other rooms. Knowing the kind of light (and heat) each room receives ensures you’ll make an informed decision on coverage and UV protection. 3. Take views and location into account. If your living room looks onto a beautiful garden, you’ll want coverings that accentuate the view. Alternately, if you’re on an urban street with high traffic, you’ll want coverage that ensures privacy. 4. Consider your family members’ needs. If you have young children (or plan to in the future), you may wish to consider child-safe operating systems. If you or your partner does shift work, you may need more light coverage. Creating a media room? Maximum coverage will enhance the atmosphere.

alk into an office building, a store or your neighbour’s new garage and look at the floor. Chances are you will find yourself standing on beautiful, gleaming polished concrete. Polished concrete floors are tremendously popular today. Improved equipment, more colours and better techniques have made it possible to take a regular dull and unattractive concrete floor and turn it into a work of art. Moreover, not

only do these floors look smart, they are also extremely long-lasting and require minimal maintenance. After 30 years in the flooring business, Steve Charron decided to open up his own company. In June 2012, he teamed up with Ryan Watton and together they opened Mirror Image Concrete Polishing in Earl Grey. Steve and Ryan travel around the province polishing concrete both inside and outside commercial and residential buildings. With a thriving

local economy and growing population, business is booming for Mirror Image Concrete Polishing, which has expanded greatly over the past year-and-a-half. Steve and Ryan note that concrete polishing is a cost-effective method of finishing a floor because it makes use of the materials already there; nearly every building today is built on a concrete slab foundation. The age of the concrete does not matter. Even if your concrete floor is cracked, chipped or uneven, Mirror Image

can level and polish it to make it look better today than it did brand new. Steve says they often hear customers remark that they cannot believe this is their floor! Concrete can be polished either wet or dry. Both methods are effective, with the industry being split 50/50 between them. Steve and Ryan prefer to cut wet and polish dry, but can do either method. However you choose to have your concrete polished, the finished product will be free of dust, mold and allergens and will stand up to everyday wear and tear far better than any carpet, linoleum or other type of floor covering. Mirror Image is now offering self-levelling concrete and self-levelling concrete that can be polished to make your uneven or damaged concrete level and look brand new. The guys at Mirror Image Concrete Polishing have 35 different colours from which to choose for both polished concrete and decorative flooring. They have teamed up with a graphic artist to provide clients with the option of having an impressive, eye-catching stencil of their choice (for example, a company logo or personal image) incorporated into their floor. Your company’s logo stencilled into a sleek, durable polished concrete floor is perfect for conveying the enduring nature of your business. Polishing concrete is a highly skilled, labour intensive business. Steve and Ryan at Mirror Image believe in doing the job right and do not cut any corners, so you can be assured that you are getting a top quality product at a reasonable price. They are always looking for hardworking, dedicated people to join their crew. For beauty that lasts, call or email Steve or Ryan at Mirror Image Concrete Polishing today.

Concrete Finishing Mustang Construction offers a wide range of concrete flatwork including driveways, sidewalks, patios and basement flooring. Thanks to their ability to restore driveways, they are the only company in the city to offer a one-year warranty on their driveways. Has your driveway lost its smooth surface and shine? Mustang Construction can grind down the top layer to have it looking shiny and as good as new. They offer this service as a warranty option for any new driveway they pour.

Foundation Problems: Brace It or Replace It? Mustang Construction is equipped to execute any foundation repairs your house may need, from c-channels and bracing to waterproofing, they can even install a new foundation under an existing house. Since the team at Mustang Construction is able to do all foundation repairs, they can provide unbiased advice about which service would be most beneficial to your home and the retail value of your property. Meggeson notes that basement repairs can become very pricey, depending on how many repairs are ultimately needed. Sometimes you can be better off simply having a new basement foundation poured for your existing house. “Foundation repairs can get very expensive,” he says. “Sometimes with only $20,000 more, you can have a new foundation put under your house, which can add $60,000 or $70,000 onto the retail value of your home… and then you will have a basement built right to 2014 building standards.” With Mustang Construction, your concrete work is always in good hands. Whether you need a new garage floor, your driveway refinished, or even a whole new basement, Mustang Construction can take care of all your concrete finishing needs.

his year, Shaver’s Sash & Door will celebrate their 100th anniversary. Founded in 1914 by H.A. Shaver, Shaver’s Sash & Door has remained a family business, evolving with the times to provide customers the best quality in custom manufactured wooden fixtures, mouldings and millwork.

Allen’s father, Roy Shaver, worked for his grandfather after school and weekends until his grandfather passed away in 1953; Roy then purchased the business. He continued to operate at the Cornwall location until building a new facility on the corner of 6th Ave. East and McKay Street in 1964.

“Herman Addison Shaver originally started building houses in and around the Regina area in 1910,” explains Allen Shaver, the current owner of Shavers Sash & Door — and great-grandson to the company’s founder. “In 1914, he changed to more of a manufacturing business… [producing] a variety of products, such as wooden pulleys for grain elevators... row boats for the Regina Beach Boat Club, but eventually settled on building windows and doors, which became the mainstay for the company for many years to follow.”

Much like his father, Allen worked many long hours to make the business successful. By the age of 11, he was able to run all the machines and was a great asset to his dad. As years went on, Allen began replacing the aging equipment with new technology. As the company continued to grow, a bigger facility was needed. In 1999, Allen partnered up with his sister, Arlene Grams, and fellow employee, Gord Plessl, to purchase the building on 230 4th Ave. East, where they are currently located.

Shaver’s may have started small, but they have evolved into a highly skilled group of nine, who use the latest technology to manufacture everything from curved staircases, curved door units, barrelled and coffered ceilings to railing and stair components, mouldings, casings, baseboards and cabinets. “Over the past 100 years, Shaver’s have worked on many interesting projects,” says Allen. “There have been multiple historic restorations to various buildings across the province, including the ‘Prince of Wales’ entrance to the Legislative Building dedicated to Prince Charles, windows on the former Telephone Exchange Building, the Weyburn and Wynyard courthouses and the University of Regina on College Avenue. These were all constructed with the original heritage of the buildings in mind… we’ve also constructed various unique and impressive projects in highend, multi-million dollar homes completed around the city.” “What sets us apart is our ability to do whatever the customer wants,” says Grams. “There are really no limits, because we know the boys can do it, and will do a fabulous job. They are second to none.” According to Grams, it is the high quality of their workmanship, combined with their ability to create these completely customizable pieces that keeps customers coming back. She explains that their history lives on not only through the continued involvement of their family, but though their customers as well, who might return decades later looking to make further additions to their home or their children’s homes. Shaver’s lives up to their motto every day: “Good as New is Easy. Good as Old Takes Talent.” Contact them today and put their talent to work for you. Your

BACKYARD

OASIS BY APOLLINE LUCYK

S

pring is soon here and it’s time to start thinking about preparing your backyard for hours of outdoor enjoyment. Make this the year to do those backyard upgrades you’ve been dreaming about.

Hot Tubs Hot tubs are one of those great backyard accessories you can enjoy year-round. Hot tub technology has advanced significantly over the years, so now is a great time to research your options. Many new hot tubs have hydrotherapy jets. With a hydrotherapy hot tub, your relaxation time actually doubles as a hydrotherapy massage, helping improve circulation, decreasing joint pain and often accelerating the body’s natural healing processes. Some also have chromatherapy (colour therapy) and aromatherapy features… and they come in all sizes!

Outdoor Pools There’s nothing like having your own pool to jump into with family and friends. If you plan to install an outdoor pool in your back yard, ensure that you are well-versed in outdoor pool maintenance. Skimming, vacuuming, cleaning and chlorinating are all essential practices to keep your pool refreshing and inviting.

Outdoor Kitchens and Living Rooms Outdoor kitchens and living rooms are one of the most innovative ways to upgrade your backyard. When planning, it is important to consider what you will want to use this space for. The main functions of your outdoor kitchen or living room greatly affect what furniture and appliances you choose to install, along with the overall layout of the area. For example, if it is to be primarily a lounging space equipped to host a dinner party, allow for ample lounging space and lounging furniture, and just stick to the basics in the kitchen and food preparation areas. However, if you love to cook, and plan to use your outdoor space for luscious dinner parties and family feasts, be sure to also allow for ample food preparation space and all the appliances you need. When planning your outdoor living space, choose resilient materials and appliances which are safe for outdoor storage and use. It’s good to plan for ample storage space for both kitchenware and appliances

FineHomes

Regina

133

to protect them from harsh weather conditions. Finally, be prepared for rain or shine. It is wise to design your outdoor living space with a partial roof, pergola, gazebo or an umbrella that can be set up for an extra sunny day or unexpected rain or drizzle.

If you have an outdoor kitchen or bar, make sure that you have ample lighting options in that area in case you end up hosting a late night appetizer party or midnight

134

FineHomes

Regina

lunch, and make sure light fixtures are disbursed around the whole space to create ambiance.

The City Square Plaza, RCMP depot and many other commercial and high-end residential projects stand as a testament to their skill and experience at paving stone and hardscape construction. Client satisfaction is put first and foremost at RIPSC. “As a small business

owner, every single project gets my full personal attention,” says Lyle Ulrich, owner. “I limit the number of projects I have at any time so I can ensure a personal connection with my clients.” And Ulrich’s personable approach to business and attention to detail has gained him many devoted clients. “We have many lifelong clients who contact us immediately after purchasing their new home to make sure we are available to once again transform their yard into an ideal setting,” he remarks.

RIPSC offers a wide variety of hardscaping options for both residential and commercial properties, from outdoor bars and retaining walls for outdoor living areas to attractive, high-quality driveways. “The popularity of paving stone and hardscape products has increased recently due to an increase in new and exciting products such as straight and curved blocks to build outdoor bars and retaining walls,” Ulrich shares. “Seating walls with pillars surrounding a patio have become very popular as well, and highlighting these

areas with low voltage LED lighting has become very popular in the last few years.” Outdoor bars are an especially popular feature in the spring and summer months, and Ulrich has noticed a great increase in demand for them in recent years. Outdoor bars form the perfect gathering point for friends and family, and can be designed to accommodate your catering needs and budget. Outdoor bars can be sleek and simple to provide a focal point to the yard with minimal maintenance and upkeep, but they can also be as elaborate as you wish. RIPSC can outfit your space with barbeque, an outdoor fridge, a bar sink, power outlets and much more. They can also install low-voltage LED lighting to make your bar an extra special place to relax in the evenings. Driveways fashioned from paving stones have also become increasingly popular due to their visual appeal and durability. Ulrich notes that the most important part of building a driveway that will last is constructing a solid base preparation, and “this is where we excel,” he says. “We construct a driveway that will require little, if any, maintenance for decades to come.” With RIPSC, an average driveway installation takes only three to four days,

and with a paving stone driveway, you can park on it the minute the crew leaves. There are countless ways to make your space more inviting and functional, and Ulrich is always more than happy to discuss hardscaping options with customers. “Outdoor living areas such as courtyards and patios are an ideal location to show off your style,” he shares. “By using paving stones, a look of elegance and comfort will be conveyed.” Contact the Regina Interlocking Paving Stone Company today to reimagine your outdoor space. BRINGING OUT THE BEAUTIFUL IN CONCRETE BY TONYA LAMBERT PHOTOS AIDAN MORGAN

B

EUMA Concrete Specialties has been meeting the concrete building needs of people in the Regina area for over 20 years. BEUMA was formed in 1991 when cousins, Roy Beuker and Andy Idema, decided to merge their contracting companies to better meet the demands of a rapidly expanding customer base. Business for BEUMA has changed over the years in sync with market trends, including new, improved techniques, and an ever-expanding repertoire of

equipment and materials. Largely concerned with the construction of community swimming pools in their early days, the cousins have shifted to doing pool decks, patios and outdoor kitchens. This aligns with the firm’s increasing focus on decorative forms of concrete: they have transitioned from pool deck coatings to decorative concrete floor coatings to decorative concrete. Andy has since retired from the company, but still comes by occasionally to help out. Roy’s wife, Bev, has recently

become more involved in the decision making and administrative aspects of the business. As Roy explains, “There aren’t many jobs like decorative concrete; it’s creative, it’s fun, you get to operate all kinds of machinery, and at the end of the project, you can’t help but pause and look back with pride on something that is really, really sharp looking.” Andy, and staff members Thomas, Sam, Dan and Mira, all agree. People are choosing to use decorative concrete more and more often in OPPOSITE L-R Sam, Bev, Roy, Dan, Thomas, Mira

their homes, yards and businesses. A remarkably durable substance, concrete can now be made to look extremely attractive. The vast array of methods for adding aesthetic appeal to concrete, combined with the flexibility in shaping it, means that clients have the option of participating in the creation of a one-ofa-kind utilitarian work of art. The crew at BEUMA Concrete Specialties offers customers several types of decorative concrete from which to choose. Stamped concrete, especially popular for outdoor work like pool decks, sidewalks and patios, is designed to look natural — like stone slabs or wood. It can even incorporate items such as semiprecious stones, fossils or shells. Polished concrete is an increasingly common form of flooring for office

buildings, basements and garages. The concrete floor is ground to a smooth mirror-like finish. Polished concrete floors are popular because they are longlasting, smart looking, environmentallyfriendly, and both easy and inexpensive to maintain. An infinite palette of colors is available, either through a dye process or by integrally colouring the concrete at the Redi-Mix plant. For those desiring a more unique finish, BEUMA offers acidstaining; this alters the colour of the concrete not through dye, but through a chemical reaction creating a distinctive mottled look. One of the rising trends in interior design is the use of concrete countertops and sinks. At BEUMA, they are skilled at creating stylish countertops, sinks and even garden benches and furniture to meet the exact individual specifications

and needs of each client. Fixtures can be built into countertops at the customer’s request. If you are looking to add value to your home, office or yard in the form of a durable, practical and gorgeous new decorative concrete addition, BEUMA Concrete Specialties are the people to call. As owner Roy Beuker notes, “BEUMA Concrete Specialties is large enough to finish your project on time, but small enough to care about providing old-fashioned, Saskatchewanstyle customer service and quality workmanship.” BEUMA Concrete Specialties 2853 23rd Avenue Regina, SK 306.352.0080 www.beuma.ca

an excellent customer experience and proficient industry experts. “Our staff is very well trained,” says Scott Bellamy, owner of Curb-Ease™ in Regina. While Bellamy has been in the curbing business in Regina for one year, the Curb-Ease™ franchise has been in operation for almost 20 years, giving them a wealth of knowledge and experience which they diligently pass

on to their employees. Bellamy explains that all installation crews are fully trained and qualified to produce a premium quality job. As a national company, workmanship and materials are guaranteed by the Curb-Ease™ corporate head office, where they maintain an aggressive research and development initiative to improve on existing products, and

introduce new products that service customers’ needs. Curb-Ease™ offers the widest variety of patterns available, including brick, slate, stone and even wood grain. When it comes to landscape edging, Curb-Ease™ leads the industry in quality products, professionalism and customer satisfaction. To further customize their borders, Curb-Ease™ also offers a variety of colour options. Whereas many other curbing companies use a dye to colour the outside of the concrete, Curb-Ease™ is unique in that they use integral colours to colour their concrete. This means the colour goes all the way through, and will remain consistent for years, even if the concrete is damaged or chipped. “A lot of times we try to match the colour to bricks or trim that customers

have on their house,” says Bellamy, explaining that the design process is often collaborative. “A lot of customers have an idea in mind of what they want. They may have a landscaper that has already started the design…and we can go in and cater to that, or we can also sit down and plan out a design concept with customers from the beginning.” Due to their superb customer relations and professional workmanship, CurbEase™ has flourished on “word of mouth” since coming to Regina in May. Bellamy explains that after neighbours have seen them in action, they are often called back to the same block to do more installations after completing a job. “The quality of our product and workmanship speaks for itself,” says Bellamy, who notes that people recognize

the quality of their product, and value the fact that their crews are personable and professionally trained. Bellamy warns customers not to be fooled by similar products, as CurbEase™ decorative concrete borders are only installed and offered by certified professional Curb-Ease™ owneroperators. Whether it is an acreage, park or front yard, they are equipped to take on both residential and commercial jobs of any size, and will beat any competitor’s written estimate. Top tipS

With so many options available on the market today, there is something to suit every design and budget. Whether you’re going for something glamorous and elegant or simple and refined, your backyard’s landscape — and you — will benefit from the tranquil beauty of a water feature.

Miniature Ponds Both scenic and versatile, miniature ponds can enhance yards with even the most limited of spaces. Be sure to choose a dry, level site that gets plenty of sunshine throughout the day and isn’t too close to a tree — falling leaves will contaminate the water. There are two types of ponds to choose from: pre-formed or liner-type ponds. Both have advantages and disadvantages, you just need to figure out what will work best for you and your yard. Pre-formed ponds are better for novices — they come in various shapes and sizes, and are made of a heavy-duty material that can withstand extreme Canadian conditions.

If you’re more creative and want to custom-design the shape and size of the pond on your own, a liner-type pond is the better option. Just be aware of the type of liner you purchase — some are not fish-friendly. In order to keep the pond as naturallooking as possible, incorporate rocks of varying shapes, colours and styles, as well as plants. Speak with your local gardening centre for tips on what types of plants will best suit your pond.

Be sure to call your utility company before you put your shovel in the ground to mark any buried lines that may be in your yard. Also, keep in mind what utilities you’ll need for your water feature, like electricity and water Remember to work with your landscape, not against it — you’ll save yourself some headaches in the long run Keep the safety of children in mind

If you want to add some wildlife, koi and goldfish are good options for Canadian ponds, as they’re good and hardy. Just add a few at a time, and keep a close eye on them—disease problems can occur if you’re not careful.

Waterfalls and Water Walls Waterfalls or water walls can add stunning visual interest to your yard — and there’s nothing like the sound of falling water to help you relax after a long day. Do you prefer a more natural and organic look?

Water cascading down rough stones or slate might be a good option. For added effect, have the waterfall tumble into a whirlpool for a spa-like feel. If you want to install a water feature that provides an unexpected surprise, a stairway fountain is another option.

“Bubblers” Do you prefer a more eclectic, compact look? Re-purpose an item like a bowl or garden pot to give it new life as a “bubbler.” All you need is a pump, some rocks and pool tubing. Birdbaths are another option if you prefer something smaller with little maintenance. You just need to change the water every other day to keep it fresh and safe for the birds that will frequent it. The options are limited only by your imagination.

DIY LANDSCAPING Supplies, Support and Plans in One Location BY TOBIE HAINSTOCK

S

o, you want to do some landscaping. You know what you want and how you want it to look. You’re even looking forward to doing it yourself. But you just might need a little helpful advice along the way.

But where do you start? You look at your yard and you know what you’d like to see there, but you just don’t know where to begin and what will work out for the best. “Bring in your ideas and we will help you come up with a plan that will work right for your yard,” Stefan says.

purchased as well as step-by-step instructions. “Be sure to check out the online video support featured on our website.” Video instruction can be found at www.therustyshovel.ca and more advice is provided through hand outs and followup emails that go along with your purchase

With a love for outdoor living, and a combination of more than 35 years experience in the landscaping industry, Sean Stefan and partner Steve Kesslering of The Rusty Shovel offer more than gardening and landscaping supplies. “We offer supplies and support to our customers,” states Stefan.

In most cases, a do-it-yourself project such as this is a one-time-only situation and you want to get it right the first time. Because of the extensive experience of the The Rusty Shovel staff, they are able to pick out trouble spots in the design, or factor in future issues that most people wouldn’t think to consider. “We try to think of the things that you’re not thinking of in order to help carry the project through to completion,” says Stefan.

Offering fast and friendly service is a priority at The Rusty Shovel. According to Stefan, if you bring in your ideas and order your product in the first part of the week, you will have your supplies and instruction by the weekend, if not that same day, depending on the type of project. With their sprinkler systems for example, when you provide a scale drawing of your yard plan, they will put a package together with all the parts you need and provide a copy of your plan that shows exactly where each sprinkler

A lot of customers are coming into The Rusty Shovel planning to do the landscaping themselves to save on labour costs.

He adds that when you visit The Rusty Shovel, you get the products you

should go and what nozzle and fittings are required for each sprinkler. Stefan says they have a great line of landscaping and sprinkler products to choose from when planning your outdoor look. “It’s good to come by and see what we have available to help you through the planning process,” he says. Blu-lock by Hydro-Rain is a popular sprinkler pipe-fitting system featured at The Rusty Shovel. This is a quicker and easier method than traditional pipe fittings because it utilizes push-and-go technology that requires no tools or tightening. Another popular product line is the Aquascape pond and pondless waterfalls. These items come with easy-to-follow instructions which will have your yard looking fantastic in no time. Pond and pondless kits feature Aquascape’s 20 products in 20 steps philosophy, which will help you create beautiful water features without having to guess whether or not it will work when it’s finished. A great looking and functional yard is enjoyable not only for you, but for your friends and neighbours as well. Beautifully landscaped yards equal a beautiful looking city, and everyone enjoys that. For more information about completing your own landscaping or sprinkler installation, call 757.2227, visit them online or drop by at 680 Angus Street. The Rusty Shovel is open Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Rusty Shovel Landscape Shop 680 Angus Street, Regina 306.757.2227 www.therustyshovel.ca L–R Sean Stefan and Steve Kesslering

N

o cheating now! It’s only the final weeks of winter and not a great time to plant just yet; ok, maybe a few things for those of you who are keeners. Iwill offer some tips a bit later in this article for early seed starting and the like. For those of you who are following my travel articles in Fine Lifestyles, you will know that I’m basking in the heat of the Caribbean sun this month, enjoying the lushness of foliage only imagined in Canada. Perhaps you will consider joining me on one of these fantastic excursions one day. The mention of tropical foliage actually twigged a notion for me and that is to incorporate some more unusual plants in my garden this season. Actually, as I travelled around the prairie provinces last summer, I did see some pretty creative use of tropical plants in municipal gardens and street planters. This is the time of the year to do some serious planning for the upcoming garden season, so let’s go with that. First of all do not be frightened by palms; they are much tougher than most give them credit for. Depending on the time of year that you purchase them, their price ranges in the neighbourhood of a large hanging basket of annuals. Naturally, palms are not hardy in mid-western Canada, so they too are considered annuals, unless you have a substantial amount of room in the house or a greenhouse to overwinter them. Perhaps the most commonly found palm is the areca, usually sold in 10- to 14-inch black containers. As with most tropical plants, the growing media is very light, insisting that there is ample water at regular and frequent intervals. The reason the media is so light is that these plants are mass produced in the “deep south” under shade cloths and almost constant irrigation. Force feeding and abundant moisture stimulates rapid growth in a very short period of time and increases the profit margin of the grower also. Keeping this in mind, you may well want to plant the palms into a more moisture-retentive mix, much like Pro-Mix BX. I have had great success using this media accompanied by regular feeding with a soluble plant food.

Other notable tropicals include hibiscus, dipladenia or mandevilla, jasmine and, of course, calla lilies. These characters have become staples in the garden centre “exotic” sections and are actually rather easy to grow. Again, remember to acclimatize these plants as they are sun lovers, but grow fast and furious in shadier exposures. Consider them to be like you taking a sunny vacation in the south, without proper sunblock or gradual exposure to the sunshine: your skin will burn. Now, for the seed sowers in the crowd — as well as the “early birds.” Tomato and green pepper seeds can be started anytime now, with a good date to remember being St. Patrick’s Day, March 17. Keeping this in mind, it is indeed time to order your supplies. Crucial to successful germination and healthy seedlings is sterilized media and good air circulation. These two points of

concern are easily attended to if proper equipment is used. Venting the seed beds by simply uncovering the container for a few minutes daily will allow fresh air into the germination area. Some retail germination kits will have a lid for the container with venting capabilities. A good preventative for fungal infections on these seed beds is to dust the surface of the media lightly with baking powder. This abates most of the common fungal issues encountered in a moist, warm and humid condition. Bear in mind that very few seeds require light to germinate, however light is essential in gradual doses after germination as well. Enjoy this time of the year as we prepare for the grand growing season ahead. Best of luck. Ken Beattie is the manager of Habitat Programs with the Canadian Wildlife Federation kenb@cwf-fcf.org.

Remember that even though these palms come from the sunny south, they have been grown in shade, so they must be acclimated to our sun. Areca palms, as with most palms, will tolerate moderate to deep shade in Canada, but perform best in good light. If you intend to have your planters in full sun, set the containers into progressively stronger light, otherwise the palms will brown terribly. This won’t kill the plant, however, with a short growing season they look a bit “tattered” for a good part of the season. I have used palms as accents in the garden in tall, slender containers as well as planting them directly into my garden. If you plant directly into the garden, amend the soil so that it has oodles of peat moss, compost or other such organic matter; areca as well as other palms just love this addition, and it helps with your watering schedule too.
