n August, when the first sounds are heard of the geese beginning their annual trek south, I feel dread for having to part ways with summer. But as the seasons change and the calls of the migrating geese become more frequent, I stop to listen to the hypnotic ushering-in of the autumn season. In spite of my reluctance to bid farewell to the summer months, many good things come with the arrival of autumn: boots, sweaters, cider and walks through crunchy leaves. Composite resins are tooth coloured materials that can be bonded onto teeth in a single visit. These resins are applied directly onto the tooth in one appointment whereby there is no need for a temporary restoration and no need to send any model work to a dental technician for fabrication. The material emulates the optical properties of natural teeth and anterior teeth can be repaired with minimal preparation. Bonding is typically more affordable than porcelain veneers. emporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction is relatively common and can produce such widespread effects as jaw pain, difficulty chewing, headaches, ear pain, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), a feeling of fullness in the ears and even dizziness. TMJ dysfunction is also associated with clicking and, in extreme cases, locking in the jaw. If an individual has any of the above symptoms, they should seek assessment and treatment by a qualified healthcare practitioner — such as a physical therapist — who, upon determining the reason for the symptoms from the assessment, can develop an appropriate treatment program.

TMJ problems can come on insidiously over time for no apparent reason or as a result of specific trauma. In the case of specific trauma (for example, bruxism or grinding of the teeth, over-opening, chewing hard food or even blunt force) part of the healing process leads to tissue fibrosis which can require mobilization procedures in order to restore full painfree motion. Myofascial release therapy can be used as a treatment option to release restrictions that have developed and are often a source of pain. As physical therapists, we often see TMJ dysfunction due to interrelationships with other parts of the body that have become dysfunctional and are leading to malalignment issues in the jaw. Many hours of treatment have been delivered to local TMJ area pain in cases where the TMJ is the victim rather than the criminal. Proper assessment is required in order to ascertain the interrelationships between seemingly disparate body parts. It is important to find the primary driver

responsible for the difficulty experienced in the TMJ. Otherwise, specific treatment to the TMJ itself may only provide temporary relief since the root of the problem has not been addressed. Craniosacral therapy, myofascial release and biomechanical care (or a combination thereof) can deal with problematic areas leading to TMJ pain, including dysfunction due to trauma. Jeff and his associate Katie Wanner are both biomechanical therapists additionally trained in myofascial release and craniosacral therapy. Their treatment is based upon a body-wide scan and assessment involving range of motion, mobility of fascia, dural mobility, appropriate joint movement and interconnections between associated regions of the body. Thorough assessment and proper mechanical diagnosis of the primary driver is the best launching pad to address the symptoms of TMJ pain and dysfunction.

f you have houseplants or a garden in the summertime, you know the importance of watering plants and tending to the garden. In fact, taking care of gardens and plants is essential to their survival. Nourishing a garden is an often-used metaphor for how to take care of relationships. Help your child to create balance when using electronics. Encourage this by setting a positive example by putting down your devices when you’re spending time with others. 6. Slow things down. Find time to take a break and play together. Creating loving memories helps to nurture and recharge your relationships. Being present with oneself and another human being allows us to grow in trust and joy. Bar soaps and harsh facial washes can strip skin of necessary moisture. Using a light cream cleanser can clean and condition the skin while maintaining that delicate moisture balance. It’s also important that he avoid cleansing with water that is too hot as this may irritate the skin causing it to over dry and possibly develop broken capillaries. Instead always use lukewarm water. Regular use of a good moisturizer prevents moisture loss and dehydration — which actually will make the skin produce more oil for protection. WHAT IS AN ULTRASOUND SCAN? An ultrasound scan is often referred to as a sonogram or ultrasonography. It is a type of medical imaging. High frequency sound waves are used to image soft

HOW CAN I GET AN ULTRASOUND? A referral is made by a physician. The physician will fill out a requisition indicating the type of exam and reason for exam. An appointment is then needed. Call The Ultrasound Gallery at 306.979.6939 to reserve yours. Most people don’t know the requisition can be used to book an appointment at any ultrasound clinic, even if there is a specific ultrasound clinic name at the top of the requisition. PROCEDURE Before the scan, a sonographer will ask pertinent questions regarding the reason for the exam. Warm gel is applied to the skin and a transducer that sends and receives sound waves is moved on the body. This produces a live image that can be frozen and an image stored. Most procedures take about 30 minutes to complete. A radiologist reads the images and makes a report. The results are sent to the ordering physician in approximately two working days. WHAT IS THE WAIT TIME? Presently, The Ultrasound Gallery is booking appointments within a few days, depending on the type of exam.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? In Saskatchewan ultrasound exams are covered by Saskatchewan Health Services. All valid health cards from Canadian provinces (except Quebec) cover the cost of an ultrasound. ith fall upon us, crafting season is picking up. It’s time to discover new hobbies and pick up old pastimes. And there’s no better way to get back in the groove than to take a class at Prairie Chicks Quilting and Scrapbooking! Prairie Chicks offers a range of classes for crafting, scrapbooking and quilting. Our educational, hands-on quilting classes are popular, and one of the main reasons I started this business in the first place. As owner, I love quilting and enjoy seeing other people explore this hobby.

My advice for first time quilters? Don’t be afraid to start! It’s not as hard as it looks. If you can sew in a straight line, you can take a class. It’s also advisable for quilters to invest in the best tools you can afford when you start. Quilters are asked to bring their own sewing machine and supplies for the projects. It is helpful to be familiar with your sewing machine before coming in for a class as they can be quite different from one another. For a sewing machine you don’t need anything fancy: a basic one can get you quite far. When it comes to selecting fabrics for your quilt, the easiest way to choose colours is to go with a line of fabrics, since designers of each line coordinate them so they all work together. The class instructor can also help you make decisions — the staff at Prairie Chicks can help select your palette. Quilting fabrics are of higher quality than regular fabrics, so it’s worth going to a quilting store to avoid wear and tear on the quilt you spend so much time on. Our weekend classes fuse handiwork in a social setting, creating a great atmosphere to work on something together. With

classes for beginners up to experienced, confident sewers, Prairie Chicks has options for everyone to make a range of quilts, aprons, table runners and more. For the crafty kids, we offer monthly classes allowing them to explore a variety of crafts. Chile is an amazing place offering a banquet for the senses and provender aplenty for stimulating conversation. How would I describe this country? A lengthy ribbon of mountains, abrupt shorelines, magnificent plants and cultures with roots deep in a mysterious past.

T

o my delight, from the Pacific coast vantage, Chile was unbelievably beautiful and became more outstanding each day. To put our voyage into perspective, it took more than a week to travel from Lima, Peru to Ushuaia on the Argentine border in Tierra del Fuego. Shall we say our North American maps are a little biased? Perhaps my most wondrous and thought provoking find was in a tiny museum in Iquique, Chile: several well preserved human mummies. Ten thousand year old mummified

human remains are still unearthed with incredible regularity from the Atacama Desert regions. These remains pre-date the Inca Empire by 6,000 years. Chile is known for its wine industry and I was primed to sample; apparently, my sad little face told it all when we looked at this rather bleak northern scenery. When in doubt, check with the excursion desk, or in my case, the senior sommelier onboard. The bustling coastal city of Valparaiso offered great hope as we ventured ashore with directions and a shopping list from the sommelier. Our map and directions took us to the very popular city region of Viña del Mar. As implied there was viña — or better yet, vino and a whole lot of mar. Robust reds abound with Carmenere and Cabernet Sauvignons leading the pack, according to my taste buds. Oceania is known for its extensive wine list and as we travelled the wine country, the list expanded to adopt several unusual vintages. Sailing further south, the weather suited our latitude in mid-February, cool with steady winds laden with salt mist. The fiord lands started for us in the tiny city of Puerto Montt, continued to Punta Arenas and then on to the spectacularly region of Patagonia. Just saying the name “Patagonia” brought excitement to my voice. Who would have thought this

corner of the globe was so outstanding? Ushuaia is a city reminiscent of Jasper, Alberta. Straddling the Argentine border, it boasts the status of most southern city. Charles Darwin sailed these waters on the famous Beagle of which the channel bears the name. He and his crew actually charted most of our itinerary, journaling the diversity of flora and fauna of this great southern continent. The great Southern Beech forests must have impressed Darwin, along with the bizarre Araucaria or Monkey Puzzle trees. Many of the plants in the furthest points south exhibit unusual floral structures and have unique adaptations to ensure pollination and survival under adverse climatic conditions. Fuchsia abound, as do Barberry and a vast array of mosses and ferns, many which bear the names of explorers such as Magellan and Darwin. Once again, Oceania offered top notch service and one of the most enticing itineraries I have ever taken. It was chock full to overflowing with excellent excursion choices, interesting ports that many ships can’t navigate and the hallmark “family” crew who spoil us time and time again. Gracias mi amigos! I

n A Room of One’s Own, Virginia Woolf wrote “a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction.” This sentiment holds true for more than just writers. Having a refuge from the others in your home is a must; in fact, many psychiatrists recommend having a personal space where you can retreat to maintain healthy relationships. While the style and function of a home is usually dictated by the sum of its inhabitants, it is ideal to have a place to call your own, whether that be a small reading nook or your very own “ma’am cave.”

In 2012, the Merriam-Webster Dictionary added the term “man cave” to its pages, defining it as “a room or space (as in a basement) designed according to the taste of the man of the house to be used as his personal area for hobbies and leisure activities.” If this term was defined over three years ago in the dictionary, why is there still no official equivalent for women? “Women are busier than ever, working full time, looking after loved ones and their home,” says Peggy Reid of Reid and Siemenson Design Group. “Now more

than ever we need a space in the house that we can call our own, where we can decompress and which provides our own sanctuary. It doesn’t matter the size. The important thing is that it becomes a place of joy and escape that we can call our own!” A ma’am cave can be anything you want it to be, but most of all, it’s a place you can relax and pursue your own interests, from yoga to crafting to simply reading a book. Since it is a place to enjoy yourself, it is the ideal space to get creative and personalize it to your own style.

When you’re planning your design, Reid suggests first deciding what activities you will be using the room for, since that will dictate how you use the space. If you practice yoga, you will need to allow yourself sufficient floor space. Try using soft, muted colours and candles. Reid loves the Mint Tisane/Meditation Room candle by LAFCO. If you plan to do a lot of reading or writing you will need the proper lighting, a task chair and a desk. Because this room is all about taking some “me” time, comfort is key. Try to incorporate comfortable seating where you can read or listen to music. Surrounding yourself with pieces that inspire you will not only elevate your mood, but also reminds you of the good things in life. Reid suggests incorporating framed family photos, works of art, and favourite accessories into your design. Instead of the usual office supplies, try being creative such as using coloured glasses as pencil holders or painting an old cabinet turquoise for a hit of colour. You can also try incorporating your favourite colour, either on the wall or with accents throughout the room. This room is also a great place for wallpaper to help you really define your style. “If you love nature, try something fun like Schmacher’s A-Twitter which features a graphic branching tree with a flock of song birds,” Reid suggests. E

ntrepreneurship was once considered a man’s game, but more women are starting their own businesses and excelling in business than ever. After all, these are the “lean in” times, where women are encouraged to lean into their careers and where campaigns like #banbossy are taking over the conversation, encouraging everyone to avoid using the word bossy around young girls to encourage their ability to lead and narrow what has been termed the confidence gap between young boys and girls. According to Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey there were 950,000 selfemployed women in Canada in 2012, which accounts for 35.6 per cent of all self-employed persons (up only 4.4 per cent since 1990). Yet, the proportion of women-owned businesses that plan to expand is generally higher than men. And when a woman does decide to open her own business she tends to stay in business longer, meaning her survival rates are higher. Success often begins with education, and the percentage of young women with a postsecondary degree or diploma has

increased from 43 per cent in 1990 to 71 per cent in 2013. However, while significant leaps in women’s education and business success have been steadily on the rise, there are still many barriers facing women in the workplace. Women-owned startups often receive significantly less investor funding, and fear of failure is listed as one of the biggest concerns among women starting their own business. Women also have to deflect the perception of many employers that family responsibilities will interfere with their competence at work. Women are still learning to use what are perceived as feminine qualities (nurturing, relationship focused) to their advantage

in the workplace, while others are fighting the idea that they need to “act like men” to succeed. Despite the many challenges women face in business, there are great role models to look to for motivation. These women range from Arianna Huffington, co-founder and editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post, who is frequently cited as one of the most influential people in the media today, to Sheryl Sandberg, the chief operating officer of Facebook, whose work in the male-dominated tech field with Facebook and Google has proven inspiring to many, to J.K. Rowling, author of the best

selling book series in history and who was originally told to write under her initials because boys wouldn’t want to read books written by a woman. But what does it take to get to the top? Some of the common traits of successful women are assertiveness, confidence, strategy, opportunity recognition and the ability to handle stress. xpectant mothers often tame their insatiable cravings with eclectic food combinations like pickles and ice cream. But while pregnant with her first child, Jordana Jacobson craved something entirely different: a venture into the world of entrepreneurship. Fortunately for future Saskatoon parents, that’s exactly where her first experience with maternity shopping led her. “I ended up going to Alberta and buying everything there because the selection in our city was so limited,” she says. “I knew there would be people like me looking for other products.” Recognizing the significant void in the Saskatoon market for fashionable maternity clothing and hip baby gear, she launched CRAVINGS maternitybaby-kids. With her first daughter just four months old at the time, the now mother-of-two hit the ground running with unprecedented success. Cravings first opened almost 10 years ago and has gone beyond maternity and baby products to include a large selection of quality kids footwear up to size 3, clothing for children up to size 8, toys, back-toschool items and so much more. “Our goal from the beginning was to bring unique, quality products to Saskatoon in a boutique atmosphere. We want to make

this exciting — and sometimes scary — time easier for our customers.” To facilitate this goal, Jacobson developed an employee education and training program to ensure her customers receive an exceptional level of service. This year the store won the SABEX Award for Customer Service, which Jacobson calls one of her most meaningful professional accomplishments to date. Working with newly pregnant mothers and other friends and family who are excited about a new baby in their lives is wonderful for Jacobson and her staff. “People are so happy at this point in their lives,” she says. “We get to know our customers and their children as they grow up; one of the many great things about owning this type of business.”

Being active had always been a priority for Jacobson, but in 2012 she took her passion for fitness one step further and began competing in women’s bodybuilding competitions. That same year, she went from winning the provincial title to Nationals where she placed first in her class. She continues to compete and is also now a judge for the Saskatchewan Amateur Bodybuilding Association. “I started judging in 2014 and I also do posing sessions with female bikini competitors. I really enjoy helping people,” says Jacobson. Juggling the family, Cravings and a demanding sport takes organization, perseverance and resilience. Jacobson starts each day at 4:45 a.m. in order to get to the gym for an hour and a half workout. “This is when I take time for myself,” she says. “I put my headphones in, tune everything else out and focus on me.” Her advice to would-be entrepreneurs sounds a lot like the advice many new mothers receive. “It’s one of the most difficult, and also most rewarding, things you can do,” she says. “Find challenges, step outside your comfort zone and go for it.” CRAVINGS maternity-baby-kids 3-2105 8th St E., Saskatoon 306.477.8200 shopcravings.ca

ew people understand the effort it takes to start a business from the ground up like Sharla Shaw, owner of Tidy Time Saver. In 2000, Shaw pursued her dream of being a business owner by starting her highly successful residential cleaning business. Today, Tidy Time Saver offers residential house cleaning services to busy families in Regina and Saskatoon. “We provide cleaning services on weekly, bi-weekly, monthly and one-time bases. We also do renovation clean ups plus move-in and move-out cleaning,” she adds. Shaw truly values the relationships her staff has built with their clients. Their hard work and dedication to what they do is one of her primary motivations on a day-to-day basis. “I take a great deal of pride in knowing I’ve chosen the right people. They all work very hard and I do everything I can so they can continue doing what they enjoy doing.” Shaw is pleased to offer helpful hints and advice to promising entrepreneurs, firmly believing the key to a successful business is to be consistent in the way things are done. Once the right formula of expertise, friendliness and excellent customer service are in place, stick with it. A good attitude about your business is also an excellent way to help keep your business successful. “Really, what we do at Tidy Time Saver is help people simplify their lives. By offering regular cleaning service, we give them more time to spend with family and friends and doing other things that they love to do,” remarks Shaw. She advises women entrepreneurs to be strong willed. “Have a backbone,” she says. “Giving in will affect your confidence and the decisions you make day-to-day.” Shaw is very conscientious about separating her personal and professional lives. She is very earnest in her advice about how entrepreneurs can maintain a healthy balance of work and family life. She recommends business owners get a landline installed for their businesses and keep their work days defined from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. This might be a difficult thing to do, but it’s very necessary to create the boundaries you need for a healthy family life and a successful business.

Having a mentor has inspired Shaw not only to build a successful business, but to give back to the community that supports her business. For Shaw, that role model has been Debbie Sardone, founder of Cleaning for a Reason, a nonprofit organization that provides free house cleaning to that undergoing cancer treatment. For makeup artist Holly Decker, every face is beautiful.

“I

see makeup as an art form,” says Decker, who was voted one of Canada’s Top 5 Makeup Artists at the 2015 Mirror Awards in Toronto last spring. “It’s not about needing makeup to be beautiful, it’s showing people how they can enhance their beauty by using makeup properly. I feel like I’m creating art with every face.” Decker grew up in Saskatoon but started her career in Vancouver 14 years ago, gaining skills in the film and fashion world as a freelance makeup artist while raising her three sons. Moving back in 2012, she saw a niche for her talent and decided it was time to take her career to the next level. “A lot of people in the rest of Canada don’t see Saskatoon as being an artistic community,” she says, “but there’s so much talent here. I wanted to be a part of what’s happening in Saskatoon and help put this city on the map for what we have to offer.” She launched Holly Decker Makeup Artistry in 2013, and in the past two years has become one of the city’s most in-demand artists, with projects ranging from fashion campaigns and music videos to wedding shoots and model portfolios. She also volunteers her services as key makeup artist for Saskatchewan Fashion Week, held in Regina. Decker says clients appreciate not only her ability to enhance their looks, but how comfortable she makes them feel. “Makeup artistry is intimate,” she says. “I make people feel

comfortable by talking them through the process.” Decker shares a studio with photographer Erin Crooks, whom she met on a photo shoot in 2012 and collaborates with often. “We are very connected on a creative level,” says Decker. “She’s someone I can work with artistically that I trust and know is going to do amazing work. As an artist, it’s an amazing feeling to be able to connect with another artist in that way.”

Decker and Crooks are part of a larger creative community at The Two Twenty, a coworking space founded in 2010 in the Riversdale District. The Two Twenty is made up of studios and offices that are home to several of the city’s creative and progressive businesses. “We all support one another,” says Decker. “I love being part of the growth happening there.” Decker features the work of Saskatchewan jewelry artists in her studio, including AKA Jewelry and CoupleThings. Along with being one of the country’s Top 5 Makeup Artists at Canadian Hairdresser Magazine’s 2015 Mirror Awards — an honour received her first time entering the competition — Decker has been named one of Canada’s Top 10 Makeup Artists for Salon Magazine’s 2015 and 2016 Contessa Awards. While her drive, hard work and passion for makeup artistry have been instrumental, she credits her success largely to the community of Saskatoon. “For artists, the only way we can make it is through the support of people in the community,” she says. “My best work has happened in

fter running her home-based design business for more than a decade, Tamara Bowman decided she was ready to take her company to the next level. In 2011, she launched Metric Design Centre, where she now leads a team of 16 offering interior design services, interior products and full package renovations to residential and commercial clients. This fall, Metric will triple the size of its showroom in a brand-new location on Circle Drive. Tamara shares what drives her, the trait every leader should possess and the legacy she hopes to leave. How did you get the concept for Metric? I find spaces fascinating and am intrigued by how design affects the vibe of a person’s life. I wanted to create an allinclusive service for busy professionals who were not only looking for that fully tailored space, but the convenience of it being completed for them out of one location. What motivates you each day? My drive is to not only be successful personally, but to create a team environment where people help each other grow. Women Entrepreneurs of Saskatchewan Insisting on Success for Every Woman By Tonya Lambert

For 20 years, Women Entrepreneurs of Saskatchewan (W.E.) has been providing women with the tools needed to realize their entrepreneurial dreams. By guiding women entrepreneurs from initial idea to implementation to increased growth, W.E. has had a dramatic impact on the provincial economy, improving the lives of thousands of women, men and children. AN EXPANDING FOCUS

W

.E. began in 1996 with only six members. Since then, it has grown substantially to include an annual membership of about 900. The support available to these women has also increased exponentially. In the past, the main focus of W.E. has been on empowering women entrepreneurs by providing various forms of start-up assistance, such as business advisory services, loans, training seminars and networking events. This year, under the new leadership of Prabha Vaidyanathan, the W.E. purview has grown to include a greater emphasis on supporting existing businesses to grow and thrive.

“We’re not only here to help you start your business, we are here to help you scale up your business,” explains Vaidyanathan. “We’re an organization that inspires and provides support to women entrepreneurs wanting to take their business success to the next level.” INCREASED OPPORTUNITIES “Any woman in the province who is even remotely contemplating being in business should come to us,” says Vaidyanathan. “We are the starting point and we can support you through every phase.” Business Beginnings is the first step to becoming a W.E. member. The one hour session is designed to demystify the process of becoming a business owner. It is here that potential members

learn about the multitude of benefits to becoming a W.E. member. A nominal annual membership fee of $105 provides women entrepreneurs with unlimited access to a business advisor. “W.E.’s advisors help women gain a profound understanding of business development and management,” says Vaidyanathan. “Advisors provide information and guidance on formulating a business plan, identifying obstacles and brainstorming solutions.” For many women entrepreneurs, financing can seem an insurmountable barrier to success. Kelly Larwood Cultivating a Desire to Be Exceptional By Tobie Hainstock

K

elly Larwood is no stranger to hard work. At Suncoast Enclosures, she is always willing to go above and beyond what her customers expect. o establish oneself as a dynamic brand in our city’s ever-competitive real estate market takes an impressive combination of savvy and integrity. Throw in some wicked personality and strong networking skills and you’ve got yourself a person who’s on your side. This is exactly Heather Fritz. As a realtor with the city’s newest independent brokerage, Boyes Group Realty Inc., Fritz delivers results alongside her larger-than-life personality. With an extensive and successful background in sales — Fritz is a former sales executive for a Fortune 500 company, has an extensive media background and has owned and operated her own photography business for 11 years — she explains that progressing into real estate was a natural move: “Residential real estate allows me to work in what I believe should be a very client-focused sales field. r. Donna Jubin always wanted to become a doctor. After studying medicine at the University of Saskatchewan and achieving her Bachelor of Anatomy, she went on to do a two-year residency in family practice, focusing mainly on women’s health and obstetrics. “I loved every minute of family practice for more than 12 years, but the work/life balance was difficult. I became interested in cosmetic laser medicine and dermatology, and in 2006 decided to refocus my career,” Dr. Jubin explains. It’s so satisfying to be able to help people and make them feel better about themselves. Helping people be the best they can be builds confidence and we have the expertise at this clinic. Cosmetic and laser medicine is the perfect fit for me because I can combine my medical expertise and science background with my interest in art and love of people. You need to have an artistic eye to succeed in this industry; it is the perfect synergy of art and science for me. How do you stay motivated?

I think you need to surround yourself with people who also believe in your dreams and your goals. What are your success habits?

a It’s about always doing things with integrity.

I expect that from my staff, as well. When you mix integrity, hard work and a great vision, it’s the perfect recipe for success. That is how we build trust and loyalty with our clients. What are the characteristics of a good leader?

a I think it’s a sign of a true leader when you have a clear vision of what you want to accomplish. When you communicate that to others around you and they believe in that same vision and goal with passion and excitement, you now have a team working with you. The more people you have believing in that, the more momentum you get and the more likely you are to succeed. A true leader inspires others to believe in their vision. What is your greatest professional accomplishment?

arrie Mulligan discovered her passion for investing and wealth advising by chance. Disappointed with her own results, Mulligan set out to build her portfolio by educating herself. “I refused to teach my sons what didn’t work for us,” says Mulligan. “Realizing you need to change is the first step, knowing how to change is a life-long journey.” Mulligan discovered her dream career, when someone pointed out she could help others. Working with a variety of investors, Mulligan especially enjoys working with women and female entrepreneurs. “I see the need for women to take control of their financial success, and they appreciate a feminine twist to their advising,” says Mulligan. “For myself, I took off the blindfold of investing and, believe me, it’s much better with eyes open.” With this mandate, Mulligan founded PowerHouse Women and Wealth to educate women on financial and personal development. Starting this fall, PowerHouse has partnered with Contagiously Positive Personal Development and Coaching to create a series of seminars for women on personal growth and wealth. ound Impressions Hearing Centre in the Grosvenor Park Shopping Centre has been open for a year and already it is becoming known as the place to go in Saskatoon if you are experiencing hearing loss. Owner Cassandra Grabowski, Master Degree Audiologist with 21 years of experience, has created an environment at Sound Impressions that is filled with caring and understanding, a place where every person from the smallest child to the most elderly senior is valued. A very open, honest and patient person, Grabowski is someone who inspires confidence in others. Here, Grabowski talks about her work, the women who have influenced her and her love of apple pie! What woman inspires you and why? This is going to sound cliché but it’s my mom. Back in the ’70s not many moms worked out of the home. My mom was a music teacher; she taught music lessons from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. while still maintaining the house, yard and garden, and raising five kids. She showed my sisters and me that women can do it all. She used to always say, “You don’t need a man; you need an education. If you get a man, great.” What excites you about your field? Definitely the new technology. When I started, there weren’t many options. Now, there are hearing aids made for iPhones, hearing aids that are Bluetooth compatible. You can stream

music into your hearing aids. You can use the recording device on your iPhone to stream everyone talking at a meeting into your hearing aids. What is your greatest professional accomplishment? I was appointed a clinical instructor for the School of Audiology and Speech Sciences in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia. I love teaching and I really enjoy helping the students to succeed. It’s one thing I’m really, really proud of. What is the best business advice you’ve received and would like to pass on to others?

On an interview with Oprah, someone asked what had made her a success. She said that you always need to know where your money is going because if you don’t then you run into trouble. You have to be hands on when you run a business. I would include that in my advice for anyone starting a business — that, and do what you love. If you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who would it be and why? Malala. I think she is just a phenomenal young woman. To survive an assassination attempt and continue to advocate for education for girls is incredible. I would probably make it a combo dinner with Oprah! Malala

inspires my daughter, Tabitha, so I would include her in the dinner, as well. What is something people would be surprised to learn about you? I love to eat pie for breakfast. It’s better to eat it in the morning and then you can wear it off by the end of the day! Apple and lemon meringue are my favourites but I’ll eat any type of pie. W

ith two successful businesses in the beauty and fashion industries no one would guess owner Melissa Hampson grew up as a tomboy. After embracing her inner ‘city girl’ the self-professed girlie-girl found her true calling. “I grew up on a farm in Nebraska. I was always out in the barn or chicken coop mucking around and taking care of the animals. My farm roots really taught me a strong work ethic — something I use everyday,” says Hampson. In just 18 years, Hampson has had an impressive career, starting with Spa Ahava and then opening Edgewater Spa. The two spas have since amalgamated into one, becoming Edgewater Spa carrying the famous Ahava line from the Dead Sea. Most recently the entrepreneur turned her passion for fashion into Ahava, a women’s clothing boutique currently expanding to include more great lines and consignment offerings. As a woman, Hampson wanted to create service that truly catered to women’s needs. Edgewater Spa is a space for reenergizing the body, mind and soul with an extensive menu of services from skincare to massage. At Ahava clients can find products such as Barefoot Venus and Hemp Soap from Big River, SK, lines that made the spa a destination. Hampson also carries new and gently used clothing and accessories from brands like Hue and Jackson Rowe. With both businesses — located conveniently on Broadway — clients can enjoy a day of spa service and shopping without having to travel across the city. “It’s really important for women to take care of themselves. We tend to take on a lot more than we should,” says Hampson. “That’s why I go to the gym everyday. If I am not healthy my business and relationships won’t be either. It’s important to find balance in the chaos.” Much of Edgewater Spa’s services can be tailored to accommodate groups allowing

clients a chance to bond with family and friends. With nearly two decades of business experience the owner understands everyday is unique. “After all these years I still learn something new everyday. You need to be adaptable to survive in business,” says Hampson. “Nothing comes easy. If that were the case, we would all have what we wanted. Opening my own business was the hardest thing I have ever done.” With a large staff, two businesses, a well-known spa line and a family, the entrepreneur’s best piece of advice is to stay focused and balanced. “Be present in your business. Work in and on it, but always be open to change.” With an ever-evolving business plan Hampson is set to create an empire built not just on her interests, but also her strengths. “When you own a business you have to work hard, harder than anyone who works for you because they are depending on you. I wouldn’t be where I am today without my amazing staff,” says Hampson. Making an ordinary day extraordinary is the entrepreneur’s specialty and with two thriving businesses, the future looks bright for Hampson and her team.

eather Kehoe of Heather Kehoe Realty/CENTURY 21 Fusion™ and H. Kehoe Style Contracting (HKSC) is one of Saskatoon’s most successful entrepreneurs. It was her strong passion for sales and marketing combined with her love for home design and real estate that inspired her to start her real estate business. Succeeding as a REALTOR® comes down to Kehoe’s understanding of her clients’ wants and needs. “Buying a home is one of the most important purchases people are ever going to make. It’s the most money they are going to spend and it’s a very personal choice. I love guiding my clients through that process.” Recently, in collaboration with her partner, Brad Williamson, the contracting company HKSC has been added to Kehoe’s repertoire of business ventures. He understands me from a business perspective and is very motivating.” Kehoe acknowledges REALTOR® and coach Mike Ferry as a professional motivator. “I admire his teaching methods and appreciate his approach on business,” she states. According to Kehoe, one of Ferry’s key points is ‘no matter how much money you make, wake up every day like

your bank account is empty.’ By starting each day with nothing, you are more motivated to go out and give it everything you’ve got. Over the years, Kehoe has read many books and utilized a number of resources to assist her on her journey. Darci Lang, author of Focus on the 90%, teaches about focusing on the positive aspects of life and business. Darren Hardy, well-known publisher and author of The Compound Effect, offers advice about starting with realistic goals and building on them. “My girls (Saige and Caprice) also motivate me. I work hard at both of my businesses to teach my girls that they can do anything they put their mind to and to help build a foundation for them to become strong independent women,” says Kehoe. She adds that it’s important for women entrepreneurs to be confident in what they say and do, and find a good mentor or “pacing” partner. Communication, planning and accountability are key elements to building and sustaining your business. Safety First Investing with a

Rules Based appRoach

S

ounds like a pretty solid approach doesn’t it? It may be that “the proof is in the pudding,” as it relates to the Cooper Schneider Private Wealth investment strategy. They approach investing with a “safety first” mentality. “When I design portfolios for clients my first concern is protection of capital,” states Daryl Cooper, Portfolio Manager of Cooper Schneider Private Wealth, a Saskatoon based ScotiaMcLeod team. Having managed money for over 20 years and having lived through two major stock market crashes, Cooper has seen firsthand the devastation many investors have had by not having an exit strategy. Their money management system does not speculate on whether the market will be up or down nor does it contain exotic or risky securities. Rather, they follow a strict rules based system that supports their safety first theory. “Our duty is to the client, and we have no reason to show bias towards any course of action other than making our clients’ financial dreams a reality,” Cooper adds. “We manage over $230 million dollars. We have to be sharp. We can’t afford to be lazy or sloppy.” Cooper reinforces, “Money management is important because one cannot predict the market. Our rules based system has us investing in some of the strongest sectors and geographical regions. An alternate approach might be to diversify in every sector just in case it goes up

—that strategy might see you have a weighting in Canadian banks, mining, gold, oil and gas stocks — however, we are not in those areas currently as our indicators show there are better places to be.” When asked for an example of how their system works Cooper shared some compelling insights on health care that demonstrates how he applied his rule based process. “Fifteen years ago many analysts were making a case to invest into the health care sector due to the aging baby boomer population. Despite these suggestions, health care essentially traded sideways for about 10 years only breaking out to the upside in 2011. Had you tried to forecast the rise of this sector from a fundamental perspective, you would have waited a long time before achieving any real return from this trade.” Using his systematic approach, Cooper’s methodology alerted him to long term strength in health care back on December 19, 2011 when the ZUH ETF (BMO US Healthcare ETF) entered the favoured zone at a price of $16.42. For the next three and a half years ZUH has remained at the top of the favoured zone showing consistent leadership relative to

its peer group of ETFs. As of September 21, 2015, ZUH closed at $41.59 for a cumulative return of 153 per cent during this timeframe. The power of the Cooper Schneider Private Wealth rules based approach, and why they are passionate about it, is that they are often able to identify areas of strength in the market, and also to keep you in that trade as the trend continues per the indicators they use. It is Cooper’s belief that his rules based approach is able to pick out sectors before they crash. He explains that one way to protect capital is to follow where “cash is not going.” For example, he decided to sell oil and gas equities over a year ago. Using another ETF as an example, the i-shares Energy ETF (XEG) indicated a sell in late September of 2014. It was a good call as oil has been in pretty much a steady downtrend ever since. “We will be staying away from oil and gas until momentum returns into its favour. Any purchase now” — as of date of writing in late September — “would be pure speculation and we just don’t speculate, period!” Cooper adds. XEG closed at $18.51 on September 26, 2014 and a year later on September 21, 2015 closed at $10.97, down 41 per cent, a major savings

of wealth for their clients as those funds were deployed into stronger sectors. “Nobody has a crystal ball into the future so an objective approach where we align our investments with global money flows in the best interests of our clients simply increases the probability that we will be able to ‘let winners ride and cut losses short!’ It is a highly disciplined and repeatable process that is designed to uncover the best risk/reward relationships in the market at any given time with a neutral approach to entering and exiting those positions as needed,” explains Cooper. “We are always upbeat about investing; it doesn’t have to be burdensome. Our process is very relaxing and unemotional. This is a critical time for investors and knowledge is power. If things get ugly in the market we can act fast if needed to protect client’s assets. ith most jobs needing only a computer, phone and Internet connection, more people are working from home than ever before. Work/life balance is a hot topic when it comes to business trends, with millennials and Gen-Y workers stating it’s one of their main priorities when choosing a job.

According to Smallbiztrends.com, 69 per cent of U.S. entrepreneurs start their businesses from home, and many have employees who work from their own homes as well. For entrepreneurs, starting a business costs an average of $15,000, and cutting the overhead by working from home allows more freedom for the business owner in those important first few years.

According to the WorkShift initiative, led by Calgary Economic Development, there are about 4.3 million Canadians with jobs that are compatible with working from home. Allowing these people to work out of office, the report states, would have a bottom-line economic benefit of $53 billion across the country, as well as community perks such
