nternationally-acclaimed master diamond cutter Mike Botha of Embee Diamond Technologies in Prince Albert recently finished cutting the Esperanza Diamond, a stone so pristine that Botha says “it probably redefines colourless.” Rather unusually, the cutting took place in public at Stanley Jewelers Gemologist in North Little Rock, Arkansas. Botha says the public nature of the cutting didn’t bother him as he is used to having students watch him work. However, it did slow the process down somewhat as he had to stop regularly for questions and photos. About 500 people showed up to watch while another 2,000 followed the historic event on YouTube. The Esperanza Diamond was discovered by Bobbie Oskarson on June 26, 2015 at Arkansas’ Crater of Diamonds State Park, the only keep-what-you-find diamond park in the world. For $8 per day, visitors can dig for diamonds. Oskarson, who named her 8.52 carat find after her niece, initially thought the stone was a piece of quartz. Oskarson, a Colorado woman, sought guidance from Denver’s Neil Beaty, an independent certified gemologist

appraiser and member of the American Gem Society (AGS). It was through another fellow AGS member — Stanley Jewelers Gemologist — that Botha, an AGS member, was chosen to design and cut the unique find. Botha was born and raised in South Africa, where he trained as a diamond cutter from 1967 to 1970. Since then, he has cut diamonds in South Africa, Russia, Mauritius, Canada and the U.S. He has lived in Canada since 1997, first in Vancouver, then moving to the Northwest Territories before finally settling in Prince Albert. Botha is the creator of Sirius Star®, the world’s brightest diamond. Botha says it was an honour to be chosen to cut the extraordinary Esperanza Diamond. He notes the Esperanza Diamond’s rough shape was unusual. “It was shaped like a sweet potato,” he says. “Diamonds are usually octahedrons, dodecahedrons, a hybrid of the two, or a cube.” Botha says the Esperanza is a rare Type IIa diamond, which account for no more than two per cent of the world’s diamond supply. Type IIa diamonds contain no nitrogen, making them especially hard. While the purity of Type IIa diamonds makes them especially valuable, the Esperanza is exceptionally pure: there are no apparent

inclusions and its colourlessness is ‘off the charts.’ “When the diamond is placed on white paper, it virtually disappears,” notes Botha. It took Botha just over a month to design a special cut for the Esperanza. “With all the diamonds I cut, my goal is to achieve maximum light return,” states Botha. The result is a 4.623 carat diamond with 147 facets in what Botha calls a triolette shape. “From the ends, it is triangular in shape; from the side, it looks like a boat. When seen from above, it looks like a teardrop,” explains Botha. Now that the cutting is complete, the AGS laboratories will grade the diamond. Botha expects that their reports will state the Esperanza Diamond is colourless, flawless and of very high clarity. Los Angeles jewelry designer, Erica Courtney, will then set the diamond into a platinum necklace. The Esperanza Diamond necklace is set to be sold by Heritage Auctions in Dallas on December 7, fetching an estimated $300,000 and possibly more given its incredible lack of colour. Oskarson, who discovered the diamond, says the money will be used to pay off debts and purchase a house.

With a European runway, guests were seated amongst the action as models made their way through an intricate maze-style path flanked by glass panels and VIP guest seating. Those lucky enough to snag a front row ticket not only got up close and personal with the swanky clothed models, but were also privy to some fabulous gifts. Swag bags, courtesy of title sponsor Midtown Plaza, were full of everything fabulous from the premiere shopping centre’s shops and boutiques, including a separate bag full of Sephora goodies. It’s no wonder the fashion event was sold out. The luxe evening was also a great cause, as guests were supporting the not-for-profit

Featured PARKLUXE Designers REBECCA KING Local fashion designer Rebecca King showcased her latest collection of unique knits, structured yet cosy autumn sweaters and jackets, a beautiful faux cape cardigan and some amazing riding hats that can be worn while on the horse’s saddle or downtown on a cool day. With her clothing in retailers across Western Canada, King continues to be a staple in Saskatchewan’s fashion community after returning from Calgary. The designer said of her experience with PARK, since working with them first in Alberta, “It means a lot to have the support of PARK. They heavily curate the designers that they work with and I have had many great opportunists because of them.” The

public had an opportunity to shop King’s runway collection during PARKSHOP at Midtown Plaza. Guests of PARKLUXE were able to purchase her designs off the runway at her pop up shop during the fashion show. HOUSE OF NONIE Showcasing 12 very clean-cut, tailored designs from her collection, it was House of Nonie designer Nina Kharey’s first showing in Saskatoon. Giving the audience a taste of her design eye, models wore split tunic style blouses, asymmetric skirts in white and black, culottes in black and beige, wrapped shirts and dresses along with a beautiful long sleeveless wrap vest and equally as luxurious wrap wool coat in black. “I like making designs that suit any women, as I personally am more attracted to those,” says Kharey of her collection. Also partaking in PARKSHOP, Kharey’s designs were available for purchase after the show and at Midtown Plaza the following day, with many people in awe of the well-put-together collection, which boasted beautiful fabrics and meticulously finished details.

ANNEKE FORBES Designer Anneke Forbes certainly has a way around a sewing machine, especially when it comes to her beautiful tailored blazers and modern style leather jackets. The ladies wear designer unleashed 10 handmade jackets, styled perfectly beginning with her lambskin leather motorcycle jacket in powder blue and black — both more fitted, to be worn to an art gallery opening rather than the open road. Forbes’ cropped Kerchief Blazer was a crowd favourite, modelled in both black and bronze. The problem with a compound movement, such as a squat or a deadlift, is that too much flattening of the natural lumbar curvature will predispose the back to ligamentous strain or, in many cases, lumbar disc injury. People who become injured tend to quit their exercise program citing a weak back without being properly assessed as to why the problem occurred. In cases where injury has been sustained, it is of utmost importance to seek proper therapeutic assessment to determine the cause, learn proper techniques, and resume the activity safely.

he New Year is traditionally a time for us to work on our resolutions. Often, declarations of new goals are in the personal fitness realm. Unfortunately, many personal fitness programs that start in early January end before the month is over, for one reason or another. While this article can do nothing to improve oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s personal motivation (that has to come from within), it is my hope that it will help prevent one reason many personal fitness programs stop suddenly: lower back injury.

This lifting style will eventually create lower back pain and is either caused by inefficient lower back control or insufficient hip mobility.

Proper lifting technique is demonstrated here (must have had some great treatment).

There are many reasons why this lumbar flattening occurs. In some, it occurs because of lack of control and maintaining the neutral motion. In other instances, it is due to loss of hip mobility. If the hip cannot properly flex, undue stress will be placed on the lower back. Hip motion can be limited due to tight muscles, muscular trigger points, myofascial restrictions, increased tone or articular restrictions within the joint. A skilled therapist can determine the best way to treat the problem, recommend strategies for self-management and instruct how to safely get back to the gym. By preventing lower back injury and strain with recruitment of proper movement, and seeking proper assessment and treatment, personal fitness goals can be much more attainable and enduring. Hip mobility is essential to maintain. Whether you are an athlete requiring specific range for sport, a weekend warrior, or part of the aging population, gaining optimal hip mobility will increase functional movement. For the middle aged and even the elderly, good hip mobility may decrease the chances of requiring hip replacement in the future and will certainly assist in maintaining the mobility required to move from sitting to standing and vice versa.

On the evening of July 24, more than 600 people gathered at TCU Place in Saskatoon to support a fundraiser that will assist the innovative Neural Health Project at the University of Saskatchewan. The memorable evening included a VIP reception, numerous entertainers, a nutritious meal, speeches and shared stories, a silent and live auction, a dance and unparalleled comradery and compassion that affected everyone present.

Maltman is ecstatic about the more than $1 million raised through the event. “Through a true collaborative Saskatchewan effort, the ONE VOICE event was a total success… it almost became like a sacred space of sharing;

The Centre utilizes a modern method of teaching that incorporates skills learned in other sports. They use six types of tennis balls, designed to advance along with the player’s skill set. Within an hour, beginning players are able to rally 10 to 20 times! Never before has learning tennis been so easy or so much fun! “One of the biggest joys of teaching tennis,” says Liendo, “is seeing the smile of someone when they get it. There is no price that you can put on that.” Lakewood Indoor Tennis Centre is not only a place to build a better backhand, it is also a great place to socialize. he holiday season is fast approaching and we recognize that this season is often anticipated with feelings of ambivalence. One part of our self may be happy about having some down time to relax and to spend with friends and family and the other part of our self may be experiencing feelings of sadness, disappointment and loss. While there are people who have the holiday season to share with loved ones, there are others who are disconnected from their family and who may not have anyone with whom to share the holidays. There are people who are fortunate to be healthy and who have employment and a life that brings them joy. There are others who are struggling with physical and/or mental illness and who may have lost a job close to the holiday season or over the course of this past year. There are people who have experienced a loss of a loved one due to death or separation. We ask people to be mindful of these facts and to be empathic towards other people’s experiences. Also, be compassionate with yourself when you are feeling sadness or disappointment. Don’t judge yourself harshly if you are feeling a sense of loss and grief. If you are feeling this ambivalence, take time to care for yourself. Plan for something that will bring you joy, whether you are alone or with other people. As the season approaches, be thinking about what you can do during the holidays that you enjoy. Make a plan for doing things in which you are interested. We must continue to keep in mind that life is a precious gift that can be taken away in an instant and should be valued on a regular basis…” TIPS FOR PARENTING CHILDREN DURING THE HOLIDAYS AFTER SEPARATION/DIVORCE Remember that the priority needs to be on the well-being of the child. While holiday stresses and expectations can easily lead to emotions running high, it is not fair for the child to get caught in the crossfire between parents. Adults need to make an extra effort to be civil, respectful and act with integrity. Communication is critical around the holidays. When possible, make plans for access well in advance and consider some flexibility in custody arrangements. Overly rigid arrangements and conflict over custody can lead to stress and anxiety for the child. Gifts may also create feelings of hurt and jealousy. When possible, discussing gifts in advance with your ex-partner can help avoid negative feelings for all involved. Your child (like you) will likely feel a sense of loss over holiday traditions that may no longer continue. Give thought to making new traditions that can be appreciated and enjoyed within the new family systems. Be aware of your own attitude and body language. Children are often more sensitive around the holidays. If your child feels the need to ask if you’re okay, they are likely feeling your emotions.

Hosting a special brunch this season? Why not set up a charming mimosa side bar that offers plenty of variety for guests?

You'll need the following: • One ice bucket with ice • Three or four glass dishes for fruit • Three or four glass juice bottles • Juice labels • Glasses

Ingredients for the mimosas include: • Champagne • Sparkling cider • Orange juice • Grapefruit juice • Raspberry lemonade concentrate • Raspberries, blueberries, blackberries or pineapple to mix in • Ice

Make all juice and refrigerate in glass bottles the night before. Chill champagne and sparkling cider and set out your table with ice bucket and glasses. Hang your “Mimosas” sign and other decór. In the morning, put everything out and invite your guests to make their favourite mimosa!

Get Ready for an

EXCITING SEASON

he fast-paced, action-packed sport of professional lacrosse has come to Saskatoon! The Saskatchewan Rush is aptly named as the team’s players need to be quick on their feet to keep control of a ball that travels at speeds up to 100 mph as it is passed back and forth up and down the length of a field the size of a hockey rink. The hard-hitting, quickmoving style of play for which the team is known is certain to keep their new fans on the edge of their seats — when they aren’t jumping for joy celebrating yet another goal being scored! The Rush, who for the past 10 seasons have played in Edmonton, are the 2015 National Lacrosse League Champions. President Lee Genier says there is every reason to believe this season will also be a great one. “We have an incredibly strong team that is comparable to the Oilers of the 80s. Mark Matthews, one of our forwards, is considered to be the Wayne Gretzky of lacrosse. He’s 6 ft. 5 in., 230 lb. and scores five goals per game.” The Rush have re-signed the entire 2015 championship team — the second youngest in the league — a fact which bodes for a great future. Seven of its players — Aaron Bold, Brett Mydske, Kyle Rubisch, Chris Corbeil, Ryan Dilks, Mark Matthews and Zack Greer — were part of Team Canada which won the gold medal at the World Indoor Lacrosse Championships in September. No other team in the history of the sport has had so many members play on the national team. As well, the head coach of Saskatchewan Rush, Derek Keenan,

was one of the assistant coaches for Team Canada. It is unheard of for a championship team in professional sports to make the move to a different market, but the Rush feel it was the right move to make. “The city and the people are so very excited about us being here,” says Genier. “The people of this province are incredibly passionate about their sports.” The Saskatchewan Rush will play out of SaskTel Centre with its capacity to seat 15,100 fans. “I and some of the guys were in Saskatoon for the press conference in July,” explains defender Ryan Dilks, “and we got to tour the arena. We were really impressed. It’s the perfect size — not too big and not too small. Can’t wait to see what it looks like full of fans!” Season ticket sales are going well with fans from across the province quickly grabbing them up. Prices are incredibly affordable for professional sports games with season tickets ranging from $199 to $549 and individual game tickets from $22 to $55. Special ticket packages comprised of four tickets and team toques are available for Christmas and make great stocking stuffers. New and expanded businesses and community facilities dot the landscape everywhere one looks. Indeed, Humboldt has been leading the province in per capita economic growth.

Located one hour’s drive east of Saskatoon at the junction of Highways 5 and 20, the city of Humboldt is surrounded by some of the best farmland in the province. The community’s deep agricultural roots can be seen depicted in the many downtown murals showcasing Humboldt’s heritage. The agricultural industry has always been the lynchpin of Humboldt’s business sector. The city’s many businesses provide

products and services connected to the industry either directly or indirectly, helping to meet the needs of the city’s inhabitants and the 30,000 residents in the surrounding rural district. Humboldt’s prosperity is magnetic, attracting an increasing number of people; since 2011, the population has grown by more than 16 per cent to

reach 6,800. New residents and business owners, Stacy Hamill Anthony and Dennis Johnson are among those who have seen the city’s huge potential. “We started DS 1A driving school three years ago, deciding Humboldt was a great place for our company with all the economic growth in and around this community,” explains Anthony. “We moved into the city in January and have been welcomed with open arms. Humboldt has that small town feeling, but with many city amenities, so we can enjoy the best of both worlds. Here, we find that our neighbours have become our extended family and the business community our friends.” To accommodate its growing population, local health services within the city have flourished and include a fully staffed medical clinic, four pharmacies and a range of dental, chiropractic, optometric, physiotherapy and other health and

wellness services. In 2011, the city opened the Humboldt District Health Complex. This state-of-the-art medical facility houses the hospital along with the community home care services and public health services. Caleb Village, a seniors’ assisted living complex, also opened recently and additional adult living suites are under construction within the community. In 2012, a new high school opened in the city. The school and the Carlton Trail Regional College are connected to the Uniplex, a vast sports and convention centre on the east side. The Uniplex houses the city’s curling rink, skating rink (Home of the SJHL Humboldt Broncos), indoor aquatic centre, fitness area and meeting rooms. Centennial Park, which surrounds the complex, includes six ball diamonds, a skateboard park and the exhibition grounds. Students and area residents

benefit from having so many recreational facilities in one convenient location. While the booming business sector is attracting people to Humboldt, it is the combination of small town friendliness with big city conveniences that makes them put down roots and stay. Olympic bobsledder, Lyndon Rush, was born and raised in Humboldt. “Growing up in Humboldt was special,” says Rush, “because I felt like I wasn’t just another kid. ne of the first sights to greet travellers as they approach the city of Humboldt from the west is the large impressive complex known as the Uniplex. This outstanding building combines a conference centre and different sporting venues all under one roof. Its large variety of facilities — ranging from a hockey arena, curling rink and aquatics center to a grand central hall and both large and small meeting rooms — makes it the setting of choice for organizations and individuals from across Saskatchewan to hold important events. Conferences and meetings, competitions and tournaments, weddings and birthday parties — all these events and more can easily be accommodated within the welcoming walls of the Humboldt Uniplex. The staff is incredible to work with in regards to setting up session rooms, having coffee and water available and assisting us in whatever our needs are.” The Humboldt Convention Centre located within the Uniplex consists of the spacious Jubilee Hall along with six meeting rooms. With its 5,040 sq. ft., Jubilee Hall can comfortably accommodate 240 people at tables or up to 500 with theatrestyle seating. “The future of Saskatchewan is in the creativity of its people,” said W. Brett Wilson, looking out at a room filled with some of the most creative minds in the province. Gathered together at the Wilson Centre’s 8th Annual Pitch Party, attendees came to celebrate their entrepreneurial successes, create connections and collaborate on new ideas and business ventures.

his year, the W. Brett Wilson Centre for Entrepreneurial Excellence at the University of Saskatchewan moved from its long-time home in the Edwards School of Business to a new, larger location within Innovation Place. Here, the Centre has created a space that serves as a catalyst for creative thinking, a place of inspiration, imagination and innovation. “In Saskatchewan, we have such a wonderful entrepreneurial climate and,

at the Wilson Centre, we want to ensure we are a valuable piece of it,” explains Stephanie Yong, the Centre’s director. “We have always loved being a part of the early stage of entrepreneurship. We love being involved in ideation.” To keep with the Centre’s shift in focus to stimulating creativity, the theme for the 2015 Pitch Party was innovative thinking. What is creativity? How do you learn to think in different ways? Where do you find inspiration? What role does innovative

thinking play in your life? The evening’s program began with an introduction to the innovative ideas of the winners of the 2015 i3 Challenge — TruVation Technologies, Tailor Magic and Aerial Twenty Two. An annual business idea competition hosted by the Wilson Centre, the i3 Challenge provides entrepreneurs with much-needed start-up capital and business support. Next, Yong unveiled the Wilson Centre’s new Building Ideas Program. Known as

User Based Idea Building, the program consists of five steps: 1) Discover, 2) Reflect, 3) Identify, 4) Create and 5) Test. You begin by discovering what is important to your end users. Next, you reflect and research, learning about your end users and organizing your ideas. After this comes a brainstorming session in which you identify as many possible solutions to the problem as you can. Then, you select the best solution and transform your idea into reality. Finally, it is time to test out the product of your innovative thinking. The evening’s four guest speakers — Brian Storey, a serial entrepreneur from Saskatoon; Monique Martin, a local multi-disciplinary artist and art educator whose works have been exhibited around the world; Stephanie Yong, Director of the Wilson Centre; and W. Brett Wilson, entrepreneur and philanthropist whose $1 million donation to the University of Saskatchewan allowed for the creation of the Wilson Centre — addressed the

topic of creativity and innovative thinking through individual presentations as well as a panel discussion.

fail as long you fail successfully. To fail successfully means you have learned from your mistakes to avoid repeating them.

“Creativity for me is a process of thinking that challenges your norms,” stated Yong. Martin expanded on this, saying, “If you do the same thing every day, you are going to get the same answer. You have to change the process to change the answer.” Martin stated she regularly uses the idea of synectics which is the forcefitting of ideas as a means of training her brain to be more creative. She advises doing things differently, switching up your routines and looking for connections between seemingly different things. “Creativity is a lifestyle,” says Martin. “It can’t just be turned on when needed.”

Finally, Martin addressed the value of embracing opportunities. “Opportunities multiply as they are seized,” stated Martin. “Every opportunity is important.” Don’t avoid an opportunity because it seems small; you never know to what big opportunity it might lead.

Storey reminded the audience that for a business endeavour to be successful, it needs to be both fun and profitable. If you don’t enjoy what you’re doing, you won’t do it well and, consequently, you won’t succeed. According to Yong, it’s okay to

Richards says the basic mechanics of moving haven’t changed over the years, though some refinements have been made such as putting protective plastic covers over mattresses and stretch wrap over upholstered furniture. “The technology of physically moving hasn’t changed. You still need people to come and carry things out of your house, put them on a truck and carry them into your new house. It is in the organization of the move that things have changed. So much is now arranged online or by phone. Today, we move people we haven’t even met. However, I still prefer to go to a person’s house and give an estimate, but we can and do give quotes remotely.” Richards asserts doing a home visit before the move is the best way to obtain an accurate estimate. It also helps to prevent any unwelcome stressful surprises from occurring. “For local moves, I insist on going to a person’s house,” says Richards. “I know what information I need; the person who is moving doesn’t; that isn’t their job. hen homeowners are renovating, a lot of focus goes into the elements they see everyday: floors, paint colours and kitchen counters, for example. And rightfully so. The design features of your home should reflect your personal style and you want to be comfortable with the look and feel of your home. But all those design bells and whistles in front of the walls are completely pointless without all the right elements behind them.

Insulation Insulation is one of the most important players behind the scenes in your house, directly affecting its warmth, energy efficiency and safety. If you’re opening up your walls, upgrading your insulation is a no-brainer. I’ve been using stone wool insulation (like Roxul’s ComfortBatt) for years now because it’s fire resistant; water repellent; resistant to mould, mildew, rot and bacterial growth; and is made from natural stone and recycled material. The bonus? Stone wool insulation is DIYfriendly. Any homeowner can take on this project with a utility knife and a little sweat equity.

Waterproofing We all know one of the biggest threats to your home is water. The amount of damage that can be caused by water is astronomical and can cost tons of money, not to mention the time and stress of repair. The room in your home that is

the main culprit of water damage has historically been the bathroom. The good news? If you’re renovating, you have the chance to fix the problem, or better yet, prevent it before it’s a problem. Many homeowners don’t realize that there are now entire waterproofing systems— like those provided by Schluter — that are a one-stop shop for keeping your bathroom high and dry. I love using Schluter’s Kerdi product behind shower and tub surrounds because it’s fast and easy to install — like drywall, but waterproof. It’s light and easy enough to work with that you can score it with a utility knife, and it even comes printed with a grid pattern for foolproof cutting.

Soundproofing On Income Property, I’ve done over 100 basement renovations for homeowners adding an income suite to their homes. When I talk to these homeowners about their concerns and “must-have” items, soundproofing between the two units is pretty much at the top of the list. If you’re renovating your basement, chances are you’re taking down the ceiling for one reason or another, like accessing ductwork, electrical or plumbing. And much like with putting extra insulation on your walls, popping in some Roxul Safe ‘n’ Sound mineral wool insulation is an easy, DIY project that ups the safety and sound absorption in your home by a huge amount. The ultimate sound dampener, Safe ‘n’ Sound provides an acoustic barrier that actually absorbs the sound instead of leaving it to bounce around between walls. It also provides higher sound absorption against low frequency ranges that other types of insulation struggle to block, so say goodbye to the thumping bass of your kids’ music and video games bleeding up from the basement. Just make sure to insulate around ductwork wherever possible, since sound travels through them. Since trusses usually run the shorter span, plans were made based on this assumption. However, when the trusses were finally revealed, they were discovered to run the other way. Al-Ro quickly installed posts to hold the extra weight. Then, Mellau worked with the engineer to get the trusses for the extension which had already been made strengthened. The engineer wanted to put in a beam, but Marie didn’t want one. Mellau convinced the engineer to remove it from the design.

AFTER to begin work. Marie was relieved; her home’s water problems were soon going to be taken care of by a wellrespected professional and, in the meantime, the weatherproofing helped put her mind at ease. In April, Al-Ro returned to begin work on the house. The hidden water damage was soon revealed. When the stucco was removed, it could be seen that all the plywood surrounding the windows was rotten and the chimney chase was also leaking, causing a huge crack to develop in the fireplace. “When I saw all the rotten plywood and water damage, it just made me want to cry,” says Marie. It was discovered the root cause of all the problems was the windows. Though they were very high-end, the windows were nonetheless faulty. This wasn’t an installation problem. The original contractor cannot be blamed; he followed the suppliers’ instructions. It was a manufacturing issue and with Mellau’s help, the Rosses were able to get the manufacturers to replace all the windows free of charge.

The window problems had led to the stucco issues. Because the windows were already leaking before any of the original stucco had even been applied, it wasn’t able to seal properly, resulting in more leakage and damage. This meant the entire stucco exterior of the home had to be removed and redone. In addition to the other exterior issues, Mellau noted the house was developing some roofing problems and made arrangements to get them fixed. With so much construction already necessary, the Rosses decided that now was the best time to extend their kitchen. Marie, who loves to cook and bake, had found she needed more space with a growing family which now included grandchildren. Plans were drawn up for an 11 ft. by 25 ft. extension with a 9.5 ft. island. Al-Ro stepped up to the plate, assisting with all aspects of the new addition. Al-Ro did the framing, the concrete foundation and the stucco for the extension while helping to find reputable contractors for the other work. “To do good work, you need time,” says Mellau. “There are drawings to be done, permits to be

During the course of the project, Al-Ro redid the entire exterior of the Ross’ home, from the framing, windows and stucco to the downspouts, lights, soffits and fascia. While working, they discovered the front concrete steps weren’t supported by anything, so they put in screw piles to provide support. Throughout the project, Al-Ro identified several additional issues with the home, fixing these by themselves whenever possible and finding suitable contractors when necessary. Al-Ro used the superior EIFS (Exterior Insulation and Finish System) when installing the new stucco. The only exterior cladding system with two-thirds of the insulation on the outside of the building and with a drainage system for condensation, EIFS is perfect for Saskatchewan winters. “The extremes in weather in Saskatchewan are hard on buildings,” says Marie. “Stucco applied as EIFS is the most energy efficient exterior out there if it is done correctly. EIFS should be the No. 1 choice for Saskatchewan with its drainage, weather proofing and insulation.” It was a challenging project but, from start to finish, Al-Ro and the Rosses worked alongside each other. “Al-Ro has an amazing crew!” asserts Marie. “They are hard workers who are strong, organized and work well together. Thanks to Robert Mellau and Al-Ro, I have fallen in love with my house again!”

Her family home in Toronto, before and after major renovations; her country-style retreat; the family’s Georgian Bay island cottage; her rental property on another Georgian Bay island; her first country retreat; and her mother’s house, which is in a converted Methodist church. While you may have seen many of these properties on her TV shows, the book offers hundreds of design tips and never-before-seen photos that are nice to browse through for inspiration. The book also offers 45 delicious recipes divided into spring and summer, and fall and winter categories. The latter

includes comfort food dishes such as Roasted Sweet Potato Salad, Comfy Cozy Carbonara and Mustard and Za’atar Roasted Chicken. The reader can easily imagine dining on these very meals in one of Richardson’s spectacular homes. Refined magazine writer Melanie Furlong interviewed Sarah Richardson about the newly released At Home: Sarah Style. FL: What was the impetus for your new book? SR: When I wrote Sarah Style, I knew I wanted to do a second book and thought it made sense to draw a distinction between the design projects executed for clients and those that were more personal. The first book was designed

to let readers find their style from a collection of rooms divided by category, and At Home: Sarah Style takes you on a full guided tour of complete homes. FL: Do you have a favourite project in the book? SR: I love each one for different reasons because they represent different journeys and experiences from a design perspective. I’m excited to share new and never-before-seen images such as our city home and my Mom’s home, which is a converted 1906 church. FL: Which of these properties was the most difficult to design? SR: I never think of projects in terms of difficulty because the design process

engages me and captures my imagination, and the process of watching a renovation unfold is thrilling, exciting and fun. Every project also has its challenges, but they are what ultimately shapes and guides the renovation. Remote locations such as the island properties can be tricky from a logistics perspective, but that is ultimately balanced by the rugged natural beauty, making it all worthwhile. I will admit that our city home required a lot of planning and prioritizing, as we wanted to be sure we made the right choices for the long haul. We don’t plan to move, so every choice needed to be a forever choice. FL: In the book, you mention that you and your husband have different tastes as far as palette is concerned. Do you find designing your own homes more challenging than working with clients? SR: Not at all. Everyone has different tastes, and it’s important to celebrate the opinions, likes and goals of everyone living in a house in order to create a space that works for the entire family. Alexander has always loved a bright palette, but after years of exploring and renovating together, I would say we know how to make sure we are both represented in every room. Sharing a home and a life should focus on collaboration, and thoughtful design can incorporate something for everyone.

FL: What influences your designs? SR: So many factors influence me. The architecture of the building and the natural surroundings guide the overall character of the interior, as I want it to be sympathetic and connected. Like a person, every home has a character, and I like to find that and bring it to life. But the biggest influence by far for me is about the human experience. I design houses to be used, enjoyed and shared, so I’m motivated to design spaces that are not only beautiful but also welcoming, comfortable, functional and practical. FL: Do you have any new TV programs planned for the near future? SR: I’m currently working on a new show for HGTV that will air in the spring and developing some new ideas for a brand new series. I’m always planning and I’m excited to tackle another challenge.

Sometimes clients will already have a piece of art or other wall décor they would like to incorporate into their design and that becomes the starting point for the space. The furniture may be chosen to reflect the colours, textures or shapes within the existing wall décor. Others

The first type of wall décor to consider is more like a wall treatment or a wall covering. The key to using any of these treatments is preparation of the wall. Ensure the surface is smooth and clean. Consider things such as electrical outlets or anything else that might interfere with the installation. Wallpaper is perfect for making a room a little more interesting and there are thousands of great options ranging from bold to subtle. There really is something for everything and wallpaper is hot right now. Wood treatments are also popular. Wood paneling or tongue and groove feature walls are a perfect way to warm up a room. The options in these two categories are not like the ones we all remember from our basements growing up or the cabin at the lake. They are available in many textures, colours and wood species. Upholstered panels are also a great idea. There are so many fabric options and it is an easy do-it-yourself project if you are up for it. The second type of wall décor includes the items traditionally paired with a painted wall, or in many cases, over top of a wall

covering. Items such as art, photographs and mirrors make a statement, and there are a few things to consider when selecting and installing them. The first is the décor-to-wall ratio. Your selected piece(s) should cover just over half of your wall. Anything larger or smaller will change the proportions of your room and will either overwhelm the space or just appear too small. The second is the height at which you hang it. Again, hang it too high or too low and the proportions of the room will be affected. Most importantly, you want to be able to view the décor, which means the piece(s) is mainly at eye level. Make sure there is enough space around the décor to allow for viewing. You should also consider the other things in the room, such as windows, furniture and other wall accessories. If there is a lot already going on in the space, opt for a single large piece so as not to create confusion. If the rest of the room is somewhat minimal, use smaller pieces grouped or clustered together for an amazing feature in the room. with a Crunchy Pecan Oat Crust

bsolutely no one will know this is a healthier version of a chocolate pie! Gluten and dairy free, you can enjoy this one with very little guilt. It is decadent, indulgent and simple to make!

1 cup of pecans (hazelnuts or walnuts would work too!) 1/4 cup melted coconut oil 3 Tbsp. maple syrup 1/2 cup almond flour 1 cup gluten free rolled oats Pinch of salt

Preheat the oven to 350 F. In your food processor, chop the nuts until very fine, then mix all ingredients together until combined. Grease a 9-inch pie pan with coconut oil and scoop the nut mixture onto the pie pan. Press down with your hands to create the crust; the more packed down the crust, the better! It should go all the way up the sides of the pan, just like a regular pie crust. Poke a few fork holes in the bottom and bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Set aside while you prepare the filling.

1–1/2 cup cashews 3/4 cup maple syrup 1/2 cup coconut oil – melted 1/3 cup raw cacao powder 1/2 bag of Enjoy Life Chocolate Chunks, melted 2 tsp. vanilla extract Pinch of salt 1/2 teaspoon of instant coffee

In a high speed blender, blend all ingredients together (if you don’t have a high speed blender, you might want to soak them overnight). If the mixture is too thick, add a bit of almond milk to thin. Pour the filling into the crust and don’t forget to lick the spoon; this filling is to die for! Freeze uncovered for an hour. Cover with tin foil and freeze overnight. Let it sit out for 15 minutes before cutting. Serve with whipped coconut cream and shaved chocolate.

ower light conditions, colder weather and drier air all contribute to less than ideal growing conditions for many plants indoors. Like countless Canadian gardeners, I lug an assortment of my growing treasures from the garden — all freshly potted in their winter indoor soil —followed by the struggle to find a niche somewhere in the house for them. This ritual is becoming quite the chore; plants grow not only in girth, but in numbers, too. Friends and relatives, neighbours and the local schools all provide excellent warehouse space for the winter months, but suffer from the same poor growing conditions. As gardeners we know our “keepers” should be well cleaned and rid of unwanted insect pests prior to bringing them indoors. It seems however, no matter how diligent, there are always plenty of pests to go around over the winter months. Fungus gnats — those wee tiny flies that resemble fruit flies — seem to be the most prolific. These pests tend to emerge around the holiday season and increase in number as the light improves in March. For the longest time, I was blaming the bananas and other fruit as the culprits, but that is not the case. Fungus gnats lay their eggs in the moist soils

of our houseplants, and it only takes a few flies to build an empire. The eggs hatch, then the practically invisible larvae stealth in the foliage and emerge as adults within 14 days. I am convinced they are born pregnant as their brood multiplies exponentially into the thousands. Control or at least moderate abatement of the fungus gnat armies starts with the houseplant soil. Where possible, allow your indoor plants to dry before watering, a simple task often overlooked by eager gardeners. More plants succumb to overwatering than to drought. It is also a good idea to cultivate the soil as best you can, either with a fork or perhaps a wooden stir stick. Disturbing the soil will allow the surface to dry more rapidly and expose the insect eggs to the air, which also dries them out. Another great trick is to apply a drench of insecticidal soap and water to every houseplant. The concept is that insecticidal soap coats the egg cases in the soil and suffocates them. Be sure to use an insecticidal soap and not dish detergent or other such combination. Follow the mixing instruction on the container and pour the solution on until it drains out the drainage hole, thus ensuring full coverage. Finally, one of the best tricks I have learned over the years. Fungus gnats will also lay their eggs in the drains of the sink, actually in the trap below. Before retiring in the evening, simply add a few drops of cooking oil or the insecticidal soap solution to each drain in the house, then cover with the plug. Combining these two control methods will certainly reduce the population of gnats

and provide you some peace of mind. The truth is these annoying pests are not particularly harmful, but are more of a nuisance and the cause of “gardener’s embarrassment.” Humidity is also often a challenge indoors during winter heating season. Drier air provides an excellent climate for spider mites and a number of other “sucking” type insects. Spider mites are so tiny they are difficult to see with the naked eye until it’s too late. Telltale signs of a gross overpopulation are thick, tiny webs which span the axils of the leaves and stems. Once this stage has been reached, these insects are tremendously difficult to control, let alone eradicate. The best method of control is prevention. Understanding spider mites cannot reproduce in high humidity is crucial and our best defense. Increasing the ambient humidity around your houseplants doesn’t have to be a huge chore; simple methods work well. Congregations of plants that take similar conditions is the easiest way to start, followed by the use of pebble trays. These trays can be a shallow dish of stone or aquarium gravel upon which your specimen plants sit. I usually place an upturned saucer in the middle to act as an island, then place my plant on that. This way, the pot is not constantly sitting in damp conditions, and he water evaporates within the immediate vicinity, raising the humidity. Many people mist their plants in hopes of increasing the humidity, but actually this is more of a tease for the plants than a benefit.
