nhance the beauty and the value of your home with the stunning look of granite. At CNG Stone Products, you will get the best quality materials installed by trained craftspeople who take pride in their work. “I’m very lucky to be working with a strong team with lots of experience,” says Scott Tresek, owner of CNG Stone in Regina. “We put a lot of pride in our work.” CNG Stone offers a wide selection of beautiful and exotic granite to choose from. Not sure what to pick? The sales staff will help you find what will work with the colours in your kitchen or bathroom. Tresek explains how measuring and cutting is a very quick but precise job with their laser measuring technology. Paying close attention to detail and accuracy, the measuring process can be done within 20 minutes. Once the granite is measured and cut, installation generally takes just a few hours. Because they understand the inconvenience of having a kitchen renovated, CNG Stone Products focuses on being quick and exact with their delivery and installation. “We guarantee the granite will be installed within two weeks after the cabinets are installed,” remarks Tresek. Quality product combined with impeccable craftsmanship and outstanding service — that’s what you get when you choose CNG Stone Products. The showroom is located in Regina at 1445 Scarth Street and is open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information or to book a consultation, call 306.585.9876 or visit them online at www.cngstone. com. You can also like them on Facebook.

“We required very specific cuts of granite for our custom built island. CNG Stone Products were very aware of the specifications and the precision needed for this design. They custom cut everything according to detailed measurements. They were very confident and very understanding of what needed to be done. The staff is very professional! They delivered on time and even took some time to educate us about how to care for the stone!”

“I was redoing the cupboards in my kitchen when a friend at work recommended CNG Stone. She had nothing but good things to say about Susan [at CNG]. My friend was right. Susan is very helpful. When I went to see her, I already had an idea of what I was looking for. Susan walked me through all the colours and even sent me photos of other ideas. The install went very well; there were no issues at all. Everything was very well taken care of. I can’t say enough good things about the experience!”

“We were referred to CNG by our builder HTH Homes, and my aunt and uncle had countertops done by CNG as well. They exceeded our expectations with their knowledge and professionalism of the product, the timely matter in which the product was made and installed, and their openness to have us call anytime if needed. I would absolutely recommend CNG to anyone. They are a very knowledgeable, professional company and Susan is very helpful and patient with deciding on a product; she really cares about the quality of the work they provide. When you walk into their business, you see people who enjoy what they do and value what they make, which made us feel very comfortable. We really love the finished product and have had so many compliments on our counters. Thank you to CNG Stone for making our home perfect!” —Aaron and Jenal Wingfield

“We hired CNG Stone for our renovation and were very pleased right from the start. The pricing of the project was very fair and the service was wonderful! Susan [at CNG] is very good at what she does. She and the installers were very professional. They communicated well and were on time with delivery. The installers were very clean and polite, and that’s important when they are coming into your home where you’re small children are playing. Overall, we were very pleased with everything and would highly recommend them to anyone!” —Dean and Shannon Fedor

Eight Quick and Simple Ways to Clear the Clutter in Your Home

1. STOP AT YOUR ENTRY Deal with mail, loose change, keys and other daily life items right at the front door. With a console or wall-mounted shelf, give everything a home using small containers, such as a jar for change or a small bowl for keys. Take the opportunity to sort mail at the door — recycle the junk right away and file the rest in a pretty storage box.

2. LEAVE YOUR SHOES AT THE DOOR Your whole house will be cleaner if you slip your shoes off at the front door. Just think, no more mopping up mud and puddles! 3. MAGAZINES Are you done with any of the magazines in that pile on the living room floor? Cull the ones you’ve read or leafed through and donate them to charity or your doctor’s office. Organize those you can’t bear to part with by putting them in a decorative box or wicker basket. 4. CLEAR THAT TABLE Clear and clean surfaces give us the feeling of living in a restful space. So don’t let “coffee table clutter” ruin your mood. Store multiple remote controls in a lidded box, or consider purchasing a universal remote that can be programmed to control your TV, DVD and stereo. 5. TOY TIME To stop kids’ stuff from taking over, give each of the little ones their own storage crate to hold playtime

essentials. For an easier clean-up, colourcode a crate for each child. 6. LOADS OF LAUNDRY Don’t let that overflowing hamper get you down. Organize in advance by separating whites, colours and darks into three or four plastic laundry baskets, one for each wash, placed in the bottom of a closet. As soon as one’s full, grab it and do a single load, rather than waiting to do a marathon of laundry. 7. BATHROOM BEAUTY Simple and chic glass kitchen canisters can easily be moved from room to room to help with clutter. In the bathroom, use large ones for skin and hair care products and smaller ones for makeup, cotton pads and Q-tips. You can nestle them under the sink, but they’ll be pretty enough to leave out on the counter. 8. HIDDEN HARDWARE Don’t waste precious time searching through a tool box crammed with tools, nuts, bolts and accessories. Give your gear some breathing space with a pegboard; it’s a retro solution available at most hardware stores. Buy it by the sheet and hang it on the wall, the back of a door or inside a closet, then purchase the attachable accessories designed to keep your bits and pieces organized. That way, you’re guaranteed to find that Robertson screwdriver when you really need it.

Bungalow: Typically, doors are flat panelled with simple

casings. Depending on the exterior style of the home, the door can be painted or left as a wood finish. Glass, quite common in bungalow doors, is rectangular in shape. While the aesthetic function of your front door is to make a good first impression to your guests, its practical function is to withstand natural elements. Between the sun, wind, rain, snow and extreme temperature fluctuations, we demand a lot from our doors. Wood is a material known for its beauty and versatility. For doors to be left with a natural wood appearance, oak, cherry maple, walnut or mahogany are the top choices. Paintable wood doors are best made from softer woods, such as pine or hemlock. Solid wood doors are exquisite additions for your home, though they demand upkeep to ensure natural expansion and contraction don’t do damage. An option some homeowners take advantage of is wood veneered doors that are less susceptible to warping. The durability of steel makes it a top choice for homeowners. Best when painted, steel doors will not warp, crack or twist over time and are also available in high-end finishes, such as a stainable, laminated wood veneer. Aluminium has a baked-on finish that will never rust or require repainting. If you want the wood look but are steering clear of a true wood product, opt for a fibreglass door. It can be easily replicated to look like real wood, although it will need re-staining every few years. Bold, vibrant colours give style and elicit a “welcome” to visitors. When faced with narrowing down your top colour choices, opt for a complementary colour that plays off your home’s exterior. Another easy option is to select a natural shade, as they tend to go with almost every colour imaginable. When truly stuck for a colour inspiration, pick up a hue you’ve already established in the yard or with front porch accessories.

The New Artisan ICE Series

A

rtisan Design Build started constructing custom homes in 2008 with a focus on environmentally-friendly technology. Since then, Artisan has grown to also provide value-filled homes to the entry-level market, and most recently, homes that break the “cookie-cutter” mentality and offer a contemporary lifestyle at an affordable price. That need for upscale, but affordable modernthemed homes was the genesis of the new ICE Series. All design aspects focus on the modern lifestyle. The stucco exterior boasts extralarge windows, allowing plenty of natural

sunlight to shine through, an ultramodern flat roof structurally engineered for the snowy Saskatchewan winter, and beautiful high-end wooden accents. Inside you will find a spacious open concept floor plan with nine-foot ceilings on both the main and second floors; luxurious stone quartz countertops and tile backsplash in the kitchen, which boasts extra-large 42-inch high cabinets, and soft closing cabinets and drawers throughout. Upstairs is the large master bedroom with a spacious walk-in closet and large spa ensuite showcasing a soaker tub with tile surround, a walk-in shower and duel “his and her” sinks.

But perhaps the best feature is what you don’t see. Each of these homes is built with an ICF foundation (Insulating Concrete Forms). ICF foundations are the latest in environmental technology and provide substantial benefits over traditional building methods. The combination of rising energy requirements and rising fuel costs mean we need to make the most of the latest in building technology to heat and cool our homes. By building ICF foundations, these double foam insulated foundations allows concrete homes to be built stronger, more energy efficient, more comfortable and environmentally-

friendly. ICFs provide greater energy solutions for any structure, resulting in performance values up to R-50 and energy savings of up to 50 to 70 per cent when compared to traditional methods. Artisan Design Build’s ICE series homes, while relatively new to the market, have already received an overwhelmingly positive response. There are now plans to launch four garage front plans and a townhome model in the coming new year. The townhome model has especially sparked a particular area of interest from buyers. In the end, Artisan Design Build looks at their builds from the client’s perspective.

They want to be able to provide a highly desirable product at an incredible value for an attainable price. They want clients to feel like they’re getting as much value from their dollar as possible. Whether it’s a starter home or long-term, their goal is to provide Artisan Design Build

homeowners with a luxurious lifestyle at an affordable price! Artisan Design Build Ltd. 7-1801 Turvey Road E, Regina 306.546.8030 www.ArtisanDesignBuild.ca

New Showroom

loform Countertops has opened a brand new showroom just down the street from their original Regina location. The new showroom displays a wide range of the countertops that Floform sells. “We have lots of slabs on the perimeter walls, and lots of mobile samples that people can take home with them,” says Brian. “The larger slabs on the walls give people a better idea of what the pattern encompasses, and we have a number of actual L-shaped vignettes with sink and faucet options set up in the showroom as well.” Floform has recently started to sell and install tiling and backsplashes. With the great variety of products on display at the new showroom, customers can choose their countertops, backsplash, sinks, faucets all at once, which is a wonderful added convenience. Floform works with many of the homebuilders, cabinet shops and other related businesses in the city. “We’ve got lots of very loyal homebuilders and cabinet shops… in Regina and southern Saskatchewan that we deal with and have dealt with for years,” comments McIntyre. The showroom is for all their customers, whether they are buying directly from Floform, or working through a

cabinet shop or a homebuilder. Anyone purchasing their products is encouraged to visit the showroom to see the full patterns, and decide which styles they want for their house. Although Floform Countertops has only been in Regina six years, Brian McIntyre, branch manager, has been in the business since the late 1970s. He originally operated Custom Countertops in Regina, until he partnered with Floform Countertops six years ago. “We’ve got a really good team for picking things out,” McIntyre comments. “They’re knowledgeable and a lot of them have been here quite a while.” Floform offers in-home consultations for measuring and design, free price estimates and a full installation service. “On any given day, we probably install six to eight kitchens in Regina, and we’ve got three or four crews going at any given time,” says McIntyre. Floform has the widest selection of countertops in the city — quartz, granite, laminate, wood and solid surface countertops. Weekly shipments come in from their fabricators in Saskatoon and Seattle, enabling them to offer their customers very low wait-times. “We have our own logistics,” he says. “We have Floform semis going from Seattle to Winnipeg each week, and the other way as well. We are working towards doing any material for kitchen countertops that people might want,” he adds. “We already have the best selection in the city and are increasing personnel to make service quicker.” The staff members at Floform are very excited about the new showroom because it displays so much of what they offer. Come by the showroom to see the new styles, and pick out your next countertop purchase. For all your home recreation needs, Gould Billiard and Patio is the place to go. With an extensive selection and a knowledgeable staff, Gould has everything you need to entertain. “We have the best selection of cues and pool tables in Saskatchewan,” says James Magouliotis, co-owner of Gould Billiard and Patio. brands in pool tables, and also offers a range of choices for pool table lighting, tabletop games, pub tables, back bars and bar room furniture. “We have a huge selection of products on display and in stock,” he says. “We can usually have a pool table installed for a customer within a week or two, no matter what time of the year. Turnaround times for a special order aren’t bad either.” Because they are so well stocked, it’s a breeze to get your bar room set up and your pool table installed right away.

One of their most prominent lines of pool tables is Brunswick, a brand that has been in business since 1845. Brunswick is the No. 1 manufacturer in the world, according to Magouliotis, who cites them as the pioneer of the pool table in North America. Brunswick also offers an excellent selection of indoor furniture perfect for the billiards room. Gould also carries Olhausen, a top-ofthe-line pool table company that offers one of the only customizable pool tables around. With Olhausen, you can custom laser engrave anything you want into the

For sports fans, Gould can customize pool tables with logos from NHL teams as well as college football. They are excited to exclusively offer customized Saskatchewan Roughriders tables, which you can view in store. These tables have Saskatchewan Roughriders and “Rider Pride” engraved in the wood, and the tablecloth displays the Roughriders logo. They also have a great selection of home recreation games, including foosball, air hockey, darts, shuffleboard, Ping-Pong, and Magouliotis’ favourite, beer pong. Gould has been in business since 1960, and former employees, Magouliotis and Dean Lusok, took over in 2007. With welltrained staff and extensive experience in the business, Gould has been doing well ever since. “We know everything about our products,” says Magouliotis. “Dean has been here for 35 years, and I have been around since 2004, so we have excellent product knowledge. We know just about everything there is to know.” The staff at Gould also offers in-home consultations to help customers decide what works best in their homes. The Benefits of Vinyl Flooring

inyl flooring was once considered the most basic of floor coverings, and for many, the mention of it evokes an image of low-quality floors seen in the homes of the 1970s. Not anymore. Modern-day vinyl flooring is a stylish option available in a variety of finishes. Earthscapes Flooring, a brand exclusive to Parkland Carpet One, recently launched its new collection of vinyl flooring, with fresh colours and styles that complement the modern tones seen in contemporary design. Whether you’re building or renovating, vinyl may be the ideal flooring to consider for your home.

24

FineHomes

Regina

MODERN VINYL STYLES The use of digital imaging has enabled vinyl flooring to become as stylish as hardwood, laminate and ceramic tile. The quality of the depth and colour in modern vinyl gives it the realism consumers want, while remaining easy to install, clean and maintain. Vinyl options include rustic looks that mimic the wood grain of hardwood, large-scale tile that adds subtle texture and pattern to your home, and styles that look like bamboo — but are much better suited to a low-humidity climate such as Saskatchewan’s. While flooring such as tile can be cold to the fe et, vinyl is a warmer, softer option. It’s also resilient to items dropped on it, making it an excellent choice for families with kids and pets. PLACEMENT AND MAINTENANCE Vinyl is ideal for high-traffic areas such as entryways, hallways and kitchens. But with the variety of contemporary options Earthscapes offers, it can be used throughout the entire home. A wood look in vinyl may be appealing for areas such as the living room, master bedroom and hallways, while the kitchen and bathroom could feature a vinyl stone style. Vinyl can run through the entire home without transitions, making installation and cleaning much easier than other flooring options. This also creates a unified look between levels and from room to room.

COST AND WARRANTIES Vinyl flooring is suitable for a range of budgets. Earthscapes Flooring features three grades in their vinyl collection: Gold (a quality entry-level vinyl), Platinum (a mid-range product) and Titanium (a luxury option), with fresh styles and colours available in each. The Titanium grade comes with Parkland Carpet One’s 120 Day Beautiful Guarantee warranty, giving buyers 120 days to change the flooring if it doesn’t meet their needs. This Titanium warranty also includes repair or replacement if the flooring becomes faded, discoloured, or damaged within 25 years. The Platinum warranty offers that same protection for 20 years, and the Gold for 10 years. The quality of vinyl flooring has drastically improved over the last decade, but for buyers who associate vinyl with rips and tears, these warranties offer peace of mind. A PRODUCT TO BE SOUGHT AFTER Earthscapes 2014 collection of vinyl flooring offers high style mixed with proven performance and industry leading warranties. While vinyl flooring of the past often didn’t feature the level of durability and fashionable appearance desired by discerning buyers, modern vinyl exceeds expectations. When choosing flooring for your new home or renovation, vinyl should be a strong contender on your wish list.

Choosing the Best Product for Your Window

F

orm, function and fashion in window coverings are essential aspects of home décor. Choosing the best window covering for your application involves several factors. Follow these tips to ensure the window coverings you select are ideal for your home and lifestyle. DETERMINE THE PURPOSE FOR YOUR COVERINGS Even before looking at styles, ask yourself about the purpose of each window covering. Do you need privacy, heat control, light control or sound insulation? Once you decide on these factors, you can begin the selection process. DIRECTION MATTERS When selecting the best window covering for a space, direction is important. If your bedroom is east-facing, you will likely want to consider a room-darkening material, such as the Duette Eclipse shade by Hunter Douglas. If a window has a west or southern exposure, products such as Silhouette or Duette provide the best UV and heat control. On northern exposure windows, you will likely want to capture the most light possible, covering the window only when privacy is necessary. Roller shades are an option for these windows. PROTECT YOUR INTERIORS FROM UV LIGHT Blocking UV light is extremely important for hardwood floors and leather and fabric furniture, which are susceptible to colour change and fading. Damage from UV rays to artwork and university degrees displayed in exposed

areas of the home is also possible. Hunter Douglas products such as Silhouettes and Sheerweave Roller shades address this problem while still allowing some light and views through. OPTIMIZE PRIVACY AND VIEWS Top down/bottom up shades provide privacy while still allowing natural light and views to enter your home. Hunter Douglas has made this top down/bottom up option available on several products, such as Duette, Vignette, Silhouette and Pleated shades. HAVE KIDS? CHOOSE CHILDSAFE OPERATING SYSTEMS Extensive research and development in the last decade has addressed child safety in the home. Hunter Douglas has added the UltraGlide® retractable cord system and the LiteRise® cordless system, which are now available on most products. Remember to consider furniture placement when selecting which operating system will perform best for each window. SOUND ABSORPTION Many of the window coverings available at Parkland Carpet One are made from fabrics, and fabric is a wonderful sound insulator. In particular, the Duette honeycomb shade has excellent sound absorption; the layers of fabric are constructed in a honeycomb fashion and each layer creates a sound barrier. RESALE VALUE: COVERINGS AS A HOME SELLING FEATURE All Hunter Douglas coverings are custom ordered and fitted to each window,

therefore most would stay in the home when sold. Properly fitted window coverings add real value to a home and become a selling feature. When choosing window coverings for a short term, consider products with an architectural quality; with this choice the next owners’ furnishings and décor are more likely to coordinate. Two-inch Everwood faux wood horizontals are a good option for this purpose. COV E R I N G S FOR E V E RY BUDGET Many people believe customfitted window coverings won’t fit into their budget. Contrary to this belief, Hunter Douglas offers a wide variety of products in a range of prices. Don’t be afraid to inquire about budget-friendly options.

uying a condo is often a great first step to get onto the property ladder. But, no matter what type of property you’re interested in purchasing, the first thing to figure out is what you can afford.

You won’t need a special or specific type of mortgage to purchase a condo. You can choose from a number of mortgage types including a fixed option, where the mortgage rate and repayment you make each month remains constant; an open option, which offers flexible repayment terms; or a variable option, which has a fluctuating repayment rate. You may also be eligible to take out a home equity line of credit which provides a loan using your home as collateral. Your mortgage specialist will let you know what options are available to you based on your unique financial situation.

Your mortgage specialist will go through a pre-approval with you so you get an idea of how much you may be able to borrow in order to purchase a condo. The pre-approval will take into consideration the mortgage payment, property taxes, condo fees and utilities, if necessary. Once you find a condo that’s within your pre-

When purchasing a condo, the same general rules apply as with every home purchase: you’ll need enough cash for a down payment and closing costs and you’ll also need to insure your unit. However, when purchasing a condo, there are other factors to consider. Find out what the condo fees cover and ask to review

the financial statements of the condo corporation. You’ll want to ensure that the reserve funds available are reflective of the age of the property since these funds are used for major repairs to the complex. If the condo is a new build, find out what type of warranty it has. It’s also a good idea to check on any restrictions the complex may have regarding renting out your unit or having pets. It’s important to understand what it means to own a condo unit and to ensure that you access all necessary documents before you sign on the dotted line. People choose to purchase condos for many different reasons: you may be a first-time home buyer getting into the market; you may be downsizing as you enter a new phase in your life; or you may want a condo as an investment property. Whatever the reason, there are loads of benefits to buying a condo. As the reasons for choosing a condo differ, so will the type of mortgage. Small Space, BIG STYLE: CreatinG a Luxurious Condo By Katrina Geenevasen

on’t think you have to sacrifice big style because you’re working with a small space. A sumptuous home is possible, even if the square footage in your condo is rather limited.

designing a small space, it’s also a great opportunity to be really creative and have fun. So where do you start?

“We all tend to gather too many items around us,” says Catherine Hyett, co-owner of a Canadian-based design company. “Moving to a smaller space provides the perfect opportunity to downsize unnecessary possessions.”

Begin by selecting appropriately sized furniture, says Hyett. If the space will be overcrowded, reduce the size of the furniture. Convert your livingroom’s three-seater sofa into a loveseat, for example. If this isn’t an option, remove less crucial pieces. In the bedroom, opt for the smallest, low profile bed you can manage, and plan to incorporate as much built-in storage as possible.

the zones within can be different as long as they relate to a straight line.”

Conquer Clutter When it comes to clutter, less is more. “A small space can look messy and disorganized if you try to cram too many knick-knacks into it,” she says. “It’s best to choose a couple of your favourite items for display and then rotate them with others over time.”

Let the Light Shine In Natural lighting is also essential; it’s important to let as much natural light into the room as you can. “Move draperies back from windows, or select shades that will fully retract when not in use,” says Hyett, adding that condo and loft windows are typically large, so interior finishes and furnishings are especially vulnerable to UV damage. “It’s important to make sure window coverings are able to mitigate this problem. If the view is spectacular, sunscreen and Silhouette-type shades will allow residents to enjoy the outdoors, while at the same time protecting against UV.”

Choose Your Colour Natural lighting is also essential; it’s important to let as much natural light into the room as you can. “Move draperies back from windows, or select shades that will fully retract when not in use,” says Hyett, adding that condo and loft windows are typically large, so interior finishes and furnishings are especially vulnerable to UV damage.

You can also consider adding floating pieces and stunning built-ins, advises Hyett. “Any space will look larger if there is less to interrupt the eye,” she points out. “A floating desk, vanity or night stand will have a smaller footprint than freestanding pieces.” Once you have determined furniture placement, consider choosing one or two focal points in each room you are decorating. A dramatic art piece, furniture piece, or framed mirror can have quite a visual impact, and allows you to draw attention away from the size of the space.

Creating Zones

These days, more and more condos and apartments are open-plan, making it necessary to designate multiple functional areas (sitting, eating, cooking), within a single room, says Hyett. “Whether the room is large or small, careful space planning is always critical,” she points out. If your room is long and narrow, a linear organization may make most sense — kitchen at one end, dining in centre and seating at the far end, adds Hyett. “Linear organization is very flexible. In May 2013, Regina welcomed the sunshine of spring and a state-of-the-art kitchen and bath showroom, The Ensuite. The Ensuite Kitchen: Personalized Practicality

oday, we think about kitchens in a much different way than our parents did. Kitchens are no longer a place where the woman of the house goes and prepares the meals alone and unseen. Contemporary open-concept kitchens are a place where you can cook and converse, do dishes and help with homework.

At The Ensuite, you will find everything you need to customize your kitchen to match your tastes and fit your lifestyle. They stock spacious sinks in an array of colours and materials, including ultra-durable cast iron. Choose from a traditional drop-in sink or a contemporary undermount sink. They also carry a variety of bathroom sinks, from classic drop-ins in an assortment of neutral tones to modern undermount and above-counter sinks in bold, eye-catching colours. The Ensuite’s selection of faucets is second to none. With every size and shape, colour and material imaginable, their faucets are both pretty and practical. They have pull-down sprays for greater mobility, sweep sprays to facilitate rinsing and soft sprays for cleaning fruits and berries without bruising. “When sourcing for plumbing fixtures and accessories, The Ensuite is my first destination,” declares Jo-Ann Senkow of New Look Interiors. “Bringing clients to the showroom, they are always impressed with the product selection and the look and feel of the space.”

Life Between the Sheets By Brandi Parnell

After a long day of mental exhaustion, physical performance or life in the proverbial “rat race,” there are few things as satisfying as pulling back the sheets and crawling into your own bed. Fine linens can make for a perfect night’s sleep. Consider these criteria when purchasing a new set of sheets.

34

FineHomes

Regina

The bed has become a place of luxury to me! I would not exchange it for all the thrones in the world.

Thread Count:

—Napoleon Bonaparte

Myth or Fact?

T

hread count is often referred to when it comes to buying bedding. However, the term has become a marketing tool to sell more sheets on discount websites. While it is important to know the number of threads woven per square inch of fabric, the quality of material is equally important. More threads of a poor quality fabric may result in a durable, but not so desirable, set of sheets. Sheets with between 200 and 600 thread count are optimal; anything higher traps body heat and can make for an uncomfortably hot night. Thread count is definitely something to consider, but so too is the fabric. Material Make Up The average person sleeps away about one third of their life; that’s quite an investment. So, too, should be the sheets you sleep on. Smooth, soft sheets may lull you into a sweet slumber sooner than a scratchy set of bargain bedding. Following are five fabrics for a fantastic night’s sleep: 1. Cotton sheets have definitely withstood the test of time because they are easy to care for and comfortable, regardless the climate or season. Egyptian cotton is the crème de la crème of cotton sheets, soft and luxurious to the touch. 2. Pima Cotton or Supima, as it is sometimes referred to, is sought because it is grown in America (named after the Pima Indians) and is superior quality. 3. Bamboo is a great alternative because the plant can flourish without pesticides or fertilizers, making it an environmentally-friendly option.

Although bamboo is not ideal for people who tend to be warm, these sheets are easy to care for and incredibly soft to the touch. 4. Silk is historically lavish for a superb sleep, but has a reputation for being best suited to colder months. Silk sheets are a high-end alternative to flannel and require delicate laundering. 5. Lastly, linen sheets may be the perfect complement to silk. Linen is best used in warm climates and on hot summer nights. A true luxury fibre linen requires more care than most other fabrics, and often requires ironing. If

treated properly though, these sheets will last forever — or until you choose to trade them in. Maintenance To extend the longevity of a great pair of sheets, wash them weekly. Dryer balls can soften your sheets without applying harmful chemicals. Be creative, add essential oils to your wash or purchase your favourite scented linen spray. The editor’s preference is lavender linen spray available at Tiber River Naturals. When life is too hectic or the day is too long, take solace between a great pair of sheets. Sweet dreams.

Dramatic Bathrooms By Trina Annand Images courtesy of Kohler

No longer satisfied with the standard bath, homeowners are finding new ways to create luxurious spaces with dramatic results.

paint, dark floor-to-ceiling tile or even wallpaper, which is making a comeback with both traditional and modern interpretations. With dark walls and white fixtures, homeowners can create dramatic contrast in a space.

“Dark colours work best in rooms with natural light, when thinking of ensuites or main bathrooms,” says Sara Mackeeman of Doucet-Watts & Davis Interiors. “However, small powder rooms that may not even have a window can also be a great place to punch up the drama with dark colours,

preference. You need to think about how you are going to use the space and make it something you will love because you’ll be using it everyday,” says Underwood. Technology is also making a dramatic statement in the bathroom with entire lighting schemes, heated floors, smartphone compatibility, sound systems, chromatheraphy, and multijet shower systems. Imagine stepping into a shower that remembers the exact temperature you had the shower at yesterday, and can remember the preferred temperatures of others using the shower. The dramatic bath is a complete sensory experience, not simply about looks. “I believe bathrooms are important to us because it’s often where we start and end our days; that daily ritual of cleansing and preparing ourselves for either day ahead or to unwind and rest,” says Mackeeman. Whether a person’s tastes are streamlined, traditional or rustic, a dramatic bathroom is within reach. Drama is more about treatments than a specific style — making a statement that is uniquely your own is always in style. “Any space seems more dramatic when you use a treatment once. Repeating it just waters down the effect and creates a pattern, you don’t have everything match in a space,” says Underwood. since you don’t necessarily spend long periods of time in them.” For those who prefer to be bold, a dark accent wall in an ensuite is the perfect dramatic addition. Gone are the days of a combined tub and shower; a walk-in shower and separate tub take centre stage in the new and expanded modern bathroom. Lending themselves more as sculptural elements, freestanding tubs are a must have for the dramatic bathroom. Separate showers offer the added perk of aging in place,

with the potential to be a roll-in shower later. Though built-in baths are no longer the norm, the Kohler Sok Tub still offers a luxurious experience with an infinity pool design that can be paired with a ceiling mounted water fill system, creating the ultimate in relaxation. According to Fran Underwood of Underwood & Moore Interior Designers, people need to focus more on what they love. “A lot of people are concentrating more on resale value than personal

The Ultimate

Chef’s Kitchen By Katrina Geenevasen

Whether you’re a seasoned chef or an amateur cook, if you want to be a culinary powerhouse, you’re going to need the right equipment and tools. So where do you begin to create the ultimate chef’s kitchen? Fine Homes has all the answers you need.

Cooking Up a Plan

H

omeowners should begin by thinking about how they use their kitchen, or want to use their kitchen, says kitchen designer, Nancy Howey. “[Homeowners should] make a wish list and prioritize — especially storage requirements and unique features,” she says. Before any design begins to take shape, homeowners should consider

40

FineHomes

Regina

what type of cooking they do: baking, canning and grilling will each have their own set of culinary requirements.

Clever Storage Solutions Any experienced chef will tell you the more counter space you have, the better. Make the most of drawers, cabinets and storage systems to make any gastronomic adventure a breeze. “Each drawer should have a purpose, with

stainless steel drawer organizers that are modular, flexible in layout and dishwasher safe,” says Howey, adding that other modular organizers for everything from cutlery and utensils to plates, pots and pans, keeps efficiency at its peak. Consider pullout racks for spices and oils close to the cooking area, as well as automatic openers for drawers, for those inevitable instances when your hands are full. For maximum efficiency, install

Laying It Out

pullout recycling and waste containers next to your prep and cleanup area.

A Coveted Countertop Providing the base for all of your culinary wizardry, the countertop you choose is of utmost importance. The best countertops today, says Howey, are quartz or stainless steel. “[Both options are] easy to clean, do not promote growth of bacteria and are not affected by water,” she says.

“Keep in mind there is no perfect kitchen, just the perfect kitchen for you,” says Howey. While most chefs work in a galley layout in their restaurants, the best layout for a home kitchen will truly depend on the space you have available. Bigger is not always better, says Howey, but adequate counter space for prep and cleanup is important. Keep in mind, however, that if the workstations are too far apart, it will not be as efficient.

A Breathtaking Backsplash While there are many beautiful options available for today’s kitchens, the ultimate chef’s kitchen will feature a backsplash of either stainless steel or back-painted glass, says Howie. “These are better options, as

they allow for easy cleanup around the prep and cooking areas,” she says.

Light It Up Task lighting in a chef’s kitchen is very important, says Howie. Consider halogen or LED pot lights to light up prep areas, and choose fixtures that give sufficient light. Dimmers can create ambient light when the counter is not in use. Also be sure to position lights so you are not working in your own shadow, says Howie. Under-cabinet valance lights will help with this, as they add light to the darker areas. Meanwhile, islands and peninsulas can have more decorative pendant lighting to add a creative touch or feature in your kitchen.

Home is Around A

HeArTH By Tori Stafford

It’s the stuff Norman Rockwell paintings are made of: a pair of boots resting by the fire, a few mugs of cocoa perched nearby, and rosy-cheeked children warming their hands after a day outside in the brisk autumn air — the perfect image of a fall family day. Heart, happiness and a hearth.

T

he traditional stone or brick fireplace surround dates back to the beginning of civilization. Then, hearths were where

blacksmiths cast their iron, mothers simmered soup and families gathered for warmth and conversation. Today, the

46

FineHomes

Regina

modern hearth can range from functional — to protect the area around the fireplace from damage, containing the fire — to fashionable, where the hearth is more or less a design statement. Although it has come a long way from the purely functional design of the medieval

era, the hearth still serves as the centrepiece and place that warms a home. This is why there are so many possibilities when it comes to options for hearth designs and the materials; today’s fireplaces and surrounds range from contemporary and sleek to rustic and rugged.

Rock: A NAtuRAl optioN with RANge Drawing from the early designs, rock is an obvious choice when it comes to hearths, but the options are endless. A natural and more organic take on using rock to create your hearth allows whatever rock you select to show in its natural form. If you’re looking to create a smaller hearth that is level with the floor, use rectangular or brick-shaped stone to combine both nature and design. For a more traditional route, old-world European-style hearths can incorporate rounded stones that appear to bubble out from their surface. Alternatively, stone-tile is a means of incorporating natural rock, such as slate or limestone, which can create contrast against light and airy or bright and dramatic wall colours, respectively. Stone hearths can be used to break up a room and can run from floor to ceiling, but emerging trends show a shift towards fireplaces that are centred on a wall with their hearth surrounds spanning a large horizontal portion of the space. This makes the hearth less of a focal point and more of a statement wall, and works well in large rooms where furniture faces the same direction. In these designs, using marble, granite or quartz is more popular, and can create elaborate elegance or sleek simplicity depending on your choice of rock and colour. BRick: BuildiNg oN A tRAditioN Brick hearths and mantles are a simple way to bring stately structure to a room, and make your house feel more like ‘home’. But brick is certainly not limited to the classic red, nor to the classic size, and, with a good mason, the options for building up a hearth ledge and creating a unique space opens many doors. Options such as built-in shelving or cubbyholes for logs and kindling can make your hearth more functional and save space in smaller rooms. Another popular way to use brick in hearths is a way that doesn’t show them at all — at least, not literally. More and more, painted brick has become a popular way to bring a shabby-chic or French-country inspired look into homes, with whitewashed brick proving a popular option for its versatility.

tile: A ModeRN tAke oN the tRAditioNAl heARth Lastly, tile is a surefire way to ensure your fireplace won’t look like any other when it comes to hearths and fireplace surrounds, thanks to the seemingly endless options today. How and what you choose to tile your hearth and/or surround with is dictated by budget and your imagination. Options include: smaller backsplash or mosaic tile, medium-sized square or rectangular tiles traditionally associated with kitchens or bathrooms, larger floor tile or any combination of the three. Tile hearths can

be bright and colourful, evoking a Spanishinspired mosaic. They can also incorporate patterns or use two colours, such as royal blue and white, to inspire an air of French Provencal appeal. Conversely, tile hearths can serve as simple, clean and classic option, while white tile surrounding a blacked-out, mantleless fireplace proves a popular option. There are a plethora of choices to make once you’ve decided to go with tile, and with a talented and skilled tradesman or mason on your side, you can create a unique hearth that you won’t see anywhere else.

It’s Never Too Cold for Furnace and Duct Cleaning By Trina Annand Photos DeAnne Bell

common misconception in Saskatchewan is when the thermometer hits a frigid -20 to -40 C, furnace and duct cleaning is no longer possible. Clint Orr, red seal journeyman and owner of Full Throttle Furnace & Duct Cleaning says that’s not the case. “It’s simply about having the right tools for the job.” Full Throttle Furnace & Duct Cleaning Inc. possesses the knowledge, experience and the latest portable duct cleaning equipment available, allowing them to perform furnace and duct cleaning services on even the coldest winter days. The process is simple. Full Throttle brings

its portable vacuum system equipped with a two inch HEPA filter right into your mechanical room to effectively capture the dust and debris right in your home. Conventional truck-mounted systems turn homes into a negative pressure environment that not only sucks the heat out of a home, but requires a door or window to be open to accommodate a large eight to 10 inch hose. With Full Throttle’s portable system being brought right into your home, the only thing running into your home is a small threequarter inch hose. In homes with an attached garage, the technicians can run that hose right from their vans through

your garage door and close the garage door. Technicians can work for two to four hours with the furnace off and only lose one or two degrees of heat. Orr and his crew put their years of experience and industry leading equipment to the test on the coldest winter days to ensure the job is done right the first time. The team at Full Throttle understands a home is a person’s most important investment; they take the time to properly care for its vital systems with appointments that last up to three times longer than their competitors. “We want to make sure we allow enough time to properly clean a system and spot any

potential issues for our clients. We value our customers’ time and want to ensure they get the best possible service every time,” notes Orr. Full Throttle Furnace & Duct Cleaning Inc. also cleans air-to-air exchangers (filters, cabinet and associated ductwork), central vacuum systems (canisters and outlets) and dryer vents. Preventative maintenance to these systems also increases the longevity. Dirty systems need to work harder, which increases the wear and tear while decreasing efficiency.

By blending cutting-edge technology, expert customer service and years of experience, Full Throttle has garnered a loyal customer base. “We take the time to make sure a client is happy. I only hire people I would be willing to let work for my grandmother. We’re trustworthy, knowledgeable and hardworking. Give us a chance to show you the Full Throttle difference and you won’t be disappointed,” remarks Orr. In the 21st century, a clean home means more than straightening pillows and vacuuming. For a truly spotless home, trust your furnace and duct cleaning to the professionals at Full Throttle Furnace & Duct Cleaning Inc.

could be? What would be wrong with wanting our 1970-something home to be like the new homes in our community? This is where we get into building envelope and the importance of ensuring a matched system between our insulation and our ventilation to ensure the home we live in can handle all the upgrades.

W

As you tighten the envelope of your home, more heat is held in and pushes up through the ceiling of your house. Any breaches in the vapour barrier such as bathroom fans, electrical boxes, top plate protrusions from wiring or plumbing — even an unsealed leaky attic hatch with little or no insulation on top — can be the “straw that breaks the camel’s back.”

After all, is there something wrong with wanting our home to be the very best it

Ice dams are formed when excess heat is trapped in the attic assembly. If that heat also contains moisture, it will create condensation on nails protruding through from shingles and the roof deck. Because it is the warmest, framing will produce the condensation last. All that frost will turn

e all think about it; we all want to do it — renovations! Everyone wants to live in a better, nicer, more efficient home. We all want to have those low E triple-pane glazed windows. We all want those new doors with the tight seals and a new home wrap with extra insulation to go along with that high-efficient furnace.

into water when the first warm weather arrives in the spring. That will cause rain inside the attic, wetting the insulation and potentially causing water damage to the ceiling. It’s not the shingles that have failed, but actually the ventilation. The best way to ensure warm air is carried out of the attic is making sure the soffits are vented properly; baffles are installed above the top plate into the attic and there is adequate roof ventilation to allow the air out. At Ultimate Insulation, we specialize in finding the root cause of ice damming. Once we determine the cause, we can create a plan to use the existing systems in the home and improve them to reduce the likelihood of ice damming in the future. Keeping Plants Healthy During Winter By Ken A. Beattie, NPD, Ph.D.

T

his may be a surprise, but plastic used to wrap plants at store is not an insulator. Poly actually transmits cold much faster than many other materials, so it is odd that house and holiday plants are wrapped up for cold weather transport in plastic. Paper wrapping is by far superior, and can be as simple as newsprint or a brown conical sleeve offered at better garden centres and plant stores. Once new houseplants are in the home, a number of situations should be considered, the least of

which is temperature. It may be freezing outside, but toasty warm Canadian homes provide appropriate conditions for tropical plants. One of the worst things you can do is place a plant near a heat source such as a forced air register or fireplace. Holiday plants often succumb to the blasts of forced, warm furnace air, withering away from excessive heat. As an example, place Poinsettias in good light, but not near a heat source; they are particularly sensitive to cold drafts as well.

mites in particular, and your uninfected houseplants will flourish.

Outdoors, evergreen shrubs are often blanketed with burlap and various wrappings for the winter. Burlap or a similar fabric is used not as an insulator from the cold, but as a sunblock. A-frame structures are also common housing for evergreen shrubs, with additional burlap often covering the end openings. In areas of the country where ice and/or wet snow are familiar, these structures are ideal. Never resort to plastic; the plants actually warm up when the sun shines through the poly, throwing dormancy into a tail spin. Plastic also conducts the cold very effectively, which you do not want. The purpose of covering is simply to provide protection from the winter sun. Evergreens will become active in the late days of winter as the sun increases in strength. Frozen soil doesn’t thaw until well into the spring, however the foliage continues to function despite moisture being unavailable. This “desiccation” is why some foliage burns or turns a brownish-red colour, often referred to as “winter kill.” Indoor dry heat during the winter months

produces ideal conditions for many insects on houseplants. Spider mites are one of the most common pests that thrive in dry heat. This presents a great clue for predicting infestations, as well as aggressively controlling and preventing a disaster. Humidity is the worst enemy of these mites because they cannot breed in high humidity.

Many houseplants and gift plants attempt to produce new growth indoors, however it is usually not substantial. Low-light conditions cause the growth to be rather stringy and weak with lighter colouration. The distance between leaves (the internode) lengthens and foliage is often smaller and lacks lustre. One reaction to this insipid growth is to jump to the fertilizer container and up the dose just a tad for good luck. That is perhaps the worst thing you can do! Winter growth, if fertilized at regular strength, is perfectly poised for fungal problems and a myriad of other nasty bits of business. Plants grown in the popular “soil-less mixes” require minimal feeding during slow growth periods; about 50 per cent ratio is often recommend and at a rate less than half of what is customary. Naturally, there are exceptions, and growing under artificial or supplementary light is one of those exceptions. May your plants remain healthy this winter! Ken Beattie is the Manager of Habitat Programs with the prestigious Canadian Wildlife Federation.

But what is high humidity anyway? Immediate vicinity humidity is more important than overall household humidity. Many references indicate misting your plants is a reasonable way to increase immediate humidity, however you could be kept busy trying to accomplish decent humid conditions. A method that works well is to place your plants in a pebble tray constantly filled with water. To avoid saturation, an island is created using an overturned saucer or similar material. The water surrounding the pebbles and the plant evaporates at a rate dependant on the immediate vicinity humidity, and as a result, the plant is quite satisfied. This microclimate is an excellent deterrent for spider
