utting together the first issue of Fine Lifestyles Cleveland has been an adventure so far. Marc and I are unabashed, totally biased Cleveland cheerleaders, and bringing this publication to our hometown is an extension of our passion for this community. We are avid arts supporters and take full advantage of the great food scene Cleveland has developed over the last decade. You’ll find us most Saturday mornings at Shaker Square for the North Union Farmers Market. Fine Lifestyles has allowed us to deepen our Cleveland connections by developing relationships with local businesses. Through this publication, we are able to share their stories with you — potential customers. I’ve truly enjoyed learning the histories and personalities behind the businesses we’ve featured in this issue. Knowing that third and fourth generations of a family are carrying the tradition into the 21st century makes me feel that much more pride in the Greater Cleveland community and its history. When we have the option to use a local business versus a corporate chain, there are factors to consider in that decision, including cost, customer service, experience and convenience. Often the best customer service and most value can be found right in the neighborhood, and keeping our money in the local economy strengthens Cleveland’s future. If you’re in the market for a home addition, a spa day, fitness classes or a tune up, please enjoy meeting your neighbors who have proudly shared their stories in this inaugural issue. Check out the events calendar to see what Cleveland is doing this summer and be sure to visit the Cleveland Museum of Art if you haven’t been there recently.

hese days, everyone has a camera — or two — on his or her phone. The problem is, not everyone knows how to use it. To make sure the essence of your family, pets, or special event is captured in the day’s photos, you can rely on John’s Photography. John Hoffart entered the world of professional photography back in 1984, when he began working for CPI Corp., which at the time was one of the country’s

largest photography corporations. “I just love working with people,” John says, “with kids, high schoolers.” This love led John to opening his own studio in 1996, which focused on youth sports. Since then, John’s Photography has branched out into other areas, including weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, high school senior portraits, families, and pets. And, John is honored to have been named Photographer of the Year twice by the Society of Northern Ohio Professional Photographers.

“We do a very personal style of photography, and we gear ourselves toward each of our clients, what they want, and what their personalities are — it’s not my personality or my style,” John says. “My goal is to have our photographs be personal, so when someone sees them they say, ‘Oh my gosh, you got my son’s natural smile. You got my daughter’s personality.’ That’s the kind of stuff we love hearing.”

John’s Photography always has kept ahead of the industry — when digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras came out, John was the second photographer in Ohio to adopt that technology. In fact, he had to print his photographs at his own studio for a while because even the labs didn’t yet have the technology to handle digital prints. Beyond keeping up to date with the latest technology, John and his team frequently attend conventions and continue their education to keep their own skills refined. All of John’s photographers are professionals and shoot photography on a full-time basis. Most have 15 to 20 years of experience, with the least-experienced still having more than six years under their belts. Also, with the safety of his clients in mind, John has all of his employees undergo criminal background checks. “I don’t take any chances with anyone here dealing with children and kids in schools and in-home portraits,” he explains. “You build such a close relationship here with the clients that I feel we have to have a background check to be here.” And, despite the extensive experience and professionalism of his team of photographers, John insists on personally photographing the most important events, such as weddings, for his clients. John’s Photography offers a variety of other services, including custom framing, restoration, copy, and passport applications. John is also the only photographer in Northeast Ohio who is certified for special-needs photography, which includes photographing specialneeds children and adults. John’s Photography is located at 14333 Kinsman Road in Burton. You can find his full list of services and galleries of John’s work at johnsphoto. com. Ultimate ConvenienCe in Clothing Care By Dylan Tussel Photos John hoffarT

f there’s one thing Alex Shvartshteyn knows, it’s clothes.

This third-generation custom tailor spent years making and altering garments, and in 1984 he decided to take his talents to the dry-cleaning industry. Alex purchased London Cleaners 29 years ago and, with the help of his wife of 33 years, has transformed the company into an exclusively door-to-door service that can handle any type of clothing. For nearly a decade now, London Cleaners has been recognized by America’s Best Cleaners,

an independent certification organization which measures London Cleaners against the highest standards in the business.

cleaners. Additional understanding of clothing construction was gained during his visit to St. John Knits in California.

Through working as a custom tailor Alex gained vital experience handling all sorts of fabrics, allowing him to achieve a distinct level of quality for his dry-cleaning business. After touring the factories of Brioni and Swarovski and the fabric mills of Zegna and Barberis, Alex gleaned first-hand knowledge of the construction and care of these designer clothes, unmatched by other Cleveland area

“It’s the understanding of the garments and the understanding of the fabrics,” Alex explains. “I know how the garments are constructed and how the fabrics are made.” As Ohio’s only certified couture level dry cleaner, London Cleaners is the company that high-end retailers trust with their own garments.

“We have good relations and consult with them when they need cleaning or help,” Alex says. “They come to us when something goes wrong with a garment and it needs restoring.”

area. This segment of the business took off, and in 1994 the company built an addition to the existing facility for extra processing and storage.

Most recently, London Cleaners has adopted a new, environmentally friendly cleaning process, which not only is more efficient but also cleans the clothes better than conventional methods.

Then, in 2004, London Cleaners built a brand-new, 15,000-squarefoot facility in Willoughby. With this massive cleaning center, Alex was able to bring the company into its current form, which is a 100 percent door-to-door dry-cleaning service that serves all of the greater Cleveland area, as well as northern Akron and into Medina.

These days, it can feel like every minute of every day is planned out. “Pick up dry cleaning” lingers on to-do lists, causing unnecessary stress. When you use London Cleaners, you’ll never have to worry about that again. To better accommodate his customers’ busy lifestyles, Alex began developing the door-to-door service in the late 1980s. Customers would put their clothes in a designated area outside their homes, and London Cleaners would pick up and clean the clothes and then return them to the same designated

“We have clients who live all over the city, so instead of having stores all over the city we have decided to go with the door-to-door service. We’re the only company that does exclusively door-to-door, and we’ve perfected the service,” Alex says. “It’s more efficient. There’s no minimum. There’s no extra charge, just regular dry-cleaning charges.”

Most customers have regular scheduled service, so London Cleaners stops by twice per week, but many customers simply call on an as-needed basis. Nobody even has to be home, so it’s completely hands-off and convenient. Check out the services offered at londoncleaners.com, and call 1.800.832.1222 to get started today. “For today’s busy lifestyles,” Alex assures, “our service will save you time and money.” FLC London Cleaners 1.800.832.1222 londoncleaners.com Below Alex Shvarshteyn, owner

iamonds are forever — so you better make sure you’re happy with the ones you get. The knowledgeable and dedicated staff at IMG Jewelers will make sure you are. At IMG, you’ll find one of the area’s widest selections of jewelry for every occasion — engagements, anniversaries, holidays, and birthdays, to name a few — and even if you don’t see what you’re looking for in stock, IMG will make it for you, exactly how you want it. This expertise didn’t develop overnight, but rather over five generations of passionate jewelers.

Ernie Logothetides, general manager

Cleveland

Steve Greenberg, owner of IMG, inherited his passion for jewelry making from his great grandfather, who used to do jewel

work in Russia for royal and well-to-do families. When Steve’s great grandfather moved to the United States, he shifted to watch making and engraving, which is what Steve’s grandmother did as well. Steve’s dad learned the jewelry trade when he was barely a teenager and brought his craft to Cleveland in 1949, doing custom diamond setting for jewelers around the area. He quickly established a reputation for doing custom design work for household names such as Liberace and Sammy Davis Jr. before passing on his skills to Steve, when he was just 13. Today Steve’s daughter, a graduate gemologist and the fifth generation Greenberg jeweler, works by his side at IMG.

You don’t have to break the bank to get a beautiful piece of jewelry at IMG — it sells pieces from $50 to $500,000 and will work with your budget to make sure you’re happy. “If someone walks in and says, ‘We want to buy an engagement ring, but our budget is $3,000,’ we will give them the best diamond, the best design they can find for $3,000,” Steve says. “If they like something that’s more expensive but they don’t have enough money, we can make them a piece that’s very similar and within their budget.” IMG specializes in creating unusual, custom designs, as well as in redesigning existing jewelry. In fact, it’s been the largest custom jewelry design house in Cleveland since 1949. IMG works directly with diamond cutters and does all of the jewelry design and creation inhouse, so it stays involved and in control every step of the process. “Whatever I don’t have in stock,” Steve explains, “I can call the cutters and get it in any size, shape, quality I need.” If, for example, you see something you like but you would rather have it made with a different metal or a different diamond, IMG will make it for you. IMG also updates jewelry and even does antique reproductions — if you have a photo of a piece that you love, Steve says, “I can duplicate the piece exactly if not better than the original that you saw.” Stop in at 5470 Mayfield Road, just west of the intersection of Mayfield and Brainard roads, in Lyndhurst. Call IMG at 440.461.4464 or email info@ imgjewelers.com with any questions. “Like” IMG Jewelers on Facebook for frequent updates, and visit imgjewelers. com to see what IMG can make for you. FLC

umtaz Gungor entered the salon world at age 13 in Istanbul, Turkey. Since then, he has traveled the world for fashion shows in iconic places such as New York, London, Paris and Germany. After coming to the United States for the Wella International Hair Color Show, Mumtaz decided to make his visit permanent in 1990. “I didn’t see anybody else styling hair the way I did,” Mumtaz recalls. “I wanted to share my European styles, colors, and cuts with the people in America.”

Mumtaz styled hair in New York City before moving to Washington, D.C., where people loved the European flair he brought to every cut. After styling hair in several cities, Mumtaz decided that Cleveland was the best location to share his gifts. It was here that in 1998 he opened his first salon, Europa. Later Europa International moved to Eton Collection. After trying a couple of different locations around the city, Mumtaz ultimately settled down at his current location in Pepper Pike.

Mumtaz’s wife, Dilek, joined him in the States in 2000 from Turkey. Clevelanders at first were hesitant to leave their comfort zones and try Mumtaz’s European-style haircuts, but Mumtaz showed them that different can be better. Before long, the European culture and technique that Mumtaz brought to the salon attracted droves of loyal Clevelanders. “My methods of coloring and styling were very different for people in Cleveland,” Mumtaz recalls. “Word spread, and before long everybody wanted to use my techniques — stylists, customers, everybody.” Mumtaz has even styled for royalty stopping through Cleveland from places such as Dubai, Kuwait, Lebanon, and Saudi Arabia.

Mumtaz’s skills and unique style have attracted a large following of repeat clients. Many people came in at first just to get haircuts, but when they experienced Mumtaz’s magic touch they decided they couldn’t live without getting the whole package from him: color, highlight, cut, and blow dry. Many people even visit every week for services, because nowhere else are they provided like Mumtaz does. “We care about each and every client. They’re all special — they’re my guests!” Mumtaz explains. “People come, and they love the style and comfort of the salon. They don’t want to go to any other salon.” Beyond hairstyling, Mumtaz International offers a wide range of specialty services: manicures, pedicures, and all types of facials, from Chocolate to Diamond facials. They also offer makeup consultations and application for any occasion. Even if you’re not royalty, you’ll be treated as if you were with the royal packages

at Mumtaz International. The queen package, for example, begins with a deep-cleaning facial or any one of Mumtaz’s specialty massages before getting your royal manicure and pedicure, along with a half-hour reflexology for your hands and feet so that you can feel as good as you look. Next, enjoy a refreshing paraffin wax treatment before being finished with a makeup application. Are you a queen or are you a princess? Visit themumtaz.com to find out. You will feel like a member of the royal family after indulging yourself at Mumtaz International. Dilek offers threading as an alternative to waxing and tweezing which is painful, leaves residue, and causes skin irritation. Threading has been perfected over centuries of use in Europe and the Middle East. It is an all-natural, fast, and effective method of facial hair removal that is perfect for anyone, especially those who have sensitive skin and those who are on Retin A or Accutane. This technique can quickly rid you of unsightly hair on any part of the face, such as eyebrows, upper lip, chin, and cheeks. And, threading is much more accurate and precise than waxing, so you’re sure to get the perfect eyebrow shape. With more than 25 years of practice, Dilek has mastered this art and performs it at Mumtaz International. “It lasts longer than waxing, and there’s no irritation and almost no redness,” she explains. “Whoever tries it loves it. They don’t want to go back to waxing.” Mumtaz International is at 30779 Pinetree Road, right next to Lander Circle in Pepper Pike. hether you are purchasing your first diamond ring or you’re ready to ‘upgrade,’ Bella Design Jewelers owner Rock White, who has over 30 years of jewelry experience, says it’s important to be an educated customer. The guidance of an experienced jeweler is indispensable in learning the subtleties of diamonds.

Q: “I shop online all the time. Is it safe to buy a diamond on the internet?” Rock: There are reputable sites online which sell GIA* certified diamonds; however, there are several disadvantages to buying diamonds online. Even though a diamond may be certified, it’s difficult

An expert’s knowledge to explain differences in the color, cut and clarity of each stone is invaluable, and most of all, examining multiple stones at one time is important in identifying the subtle differences between each diamond. However, if you purchase a diamond online, make sure the site has an excellent return policy. Also, refer to the Better Business Bureau to check the site’s reputability. *The Gemological Institute of America, Inc.: a non-profit agency which sets standards and ethical practices in the gem trade industry.

Q: “I am overwhelmed with all of the variables of buying a diamond. I want the best diamond for the money, so which of the four Cs is the most important to consider?”

the cut the most important of the four C’s. It is difficult to go into a detailed explanation of all the aspects of cut, so for more information, please visit the four C’s section at belladesignjewelers. com or GIA.com. Color is the next important factor because it is the characteristic that is most easily discerned with the naked eye. I believe that clarity, on the other hand, is less critical when purchasing a stone, because a lovely SI1 stone may look the same to the naked eye as a VVS1. Again, looking at multiple stones in person and working with a knowledgeable jewelry professional will help you determine which characteristics are most important to you. Q: “I inherited my grandmother’s wedding ring. What can I do with it?”

Rock: First, you must consider which shape of diamond you prefer. Certain shapes are designed to refract and disperse light more effectively, such as round, princess, cushion, and radiant cuts. Other shapes, such as marquise, pear, oval, and emerald cut diamonds, may be slightly less radiant, but these shapes have their own unique beauty and some, such as the emerald cut, can offer a vintage feel.

Rock: Heirloom jewelry has great sentimental value but many are afraid to wear them because they appear too fragile. Many heirloom pieces can be restored to their original condition or reconfigured into a completely new design, which can be enjoyed for another generation. If you’re interested in an updated style I can work with you to custom design a stunning and unique piece. I’ve created many beautiful rings, pendants, earrings and bracelets by resetting gemstones from family heirlooms.

Cut not only refers to the shape of a diamond but also to the proportions of its faceting. It is these features which give the diamond its brilliance and make

assage Envy has one goal, and that’s to promote overall wellness. Through convenient and affordable spa services, Massage Envy helps its guests take better care of themselves both mentally and physically. “It was created so that people didn’t look at massage as a luxury, but rather as something that everyone should do because your body needs it,” explains Robin Szabo, owner of three local spas. “You wouldn’t go over 3,000 miles without tuning up your car, so why wouldn’t you do the same for your body?”

With its wellness program, Massage Envy makes it affordable for people to reap the physical and mental benefits of getting monthly massages. For $59 per month, guests receive a customized 60 minute massage session each month, with discounts on additional massages and other products and services. For instance, you can save on enhanced therapy services, such as aromatherapy, sugar foot scrubs, and deep muscle therapy, which will complete your experience. And, if you can’t make it in for your monthly massage, it will roll over into the next month and still be available for use at your convenience. “Massage is great for blood circulation; it also helps you relax, alleviates stress, and even can help with headaches, whether they’re tension headaches or migraine headaches,” Robin explains. “People who have insomnia have found that it helps them to sleep better, and it also has health benefits such as boosting your immune system.” There are many different forms of massage, each with its own special purpose. Massage Envy’s signature hot stone envy massage, for example, uses heat to ease muscle tension and stiffness. This therapy has myriad benefits, ranging from increasing flexibility in joints to relieving pain associated with fibromyalgia, arthritis, and other chronic conditions. If you’re suffering from pain stemming from muscle tightness, trigger point therapy may be for you. stress and pain. If, on the other hand, you’re active in sports, the sports massage may be what you’re looking for. This massage helps to improve endurance and flexibility, thereby reducing both the risk for injury as well as the recovery time after workouts. Other forms of massage therapy offered at Massage Envy include Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, reflexology, cranial sacral therapy, prenatal massage, and geriatric massage. To ensure the quality of its services, Massage Envy holds its massage therapists to extremely high standards, hiring only those who are licensed through the State Medical Board. Because overall wellness doesn’t end with massage, Massage Envy also provides a variety of facials that help to protect your skin from external forces, such as the sun, wind, and other environmental factors. For an extra $10, members can swap their monthly massage for a facial. “The main purpose is to create healthy skin,” Robin says, “to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and to protect your skin against the environment.” Your skin is exposed every day to harsh environmental stressors, such as the sunlight, wind, and pollution. The environmental shield vitamin C facial protects your skin against the elements, reversing the signs of aging caused by exposure to them, as well as smoothing and clearing your skin. For those who struggle with acne, redness, or other skin irritation, Massage Envy offers the clarifying enzyme acne facial. This facial promotes balanced, healthy skin by clearing acne, reducing blemishes, and soothing inflammation. Whether you’re suffering from a mild breakout or severe acne, this exfoliating facial will help to cleanse and clear your skin. Massage Envy also offers anti-aging and sensitive skin facials. All of Massage Envy’s facials feature Murad skincare products, which emphasize the use of water as a cleansing agent. While many skincare products come packed with harsh chemicals such as alcohol, Murad focuses on natural ingredients, such as water, to soothe, protect, and rejuvenate your skin.

EXPERTAdvice How to Relieve Pain and Avoid Surgery

Dr. John Livingston Livingston Chiropractic Center 25111 Miles Road, Suite D 440.528.0005 jklii@hotmail.com jkldc.com “I have sharp pain in my lower back and it shoots into my leg. I haven’t slept in weeks —medication isn’t helping!” “My neck is sore and my arm and hand are going numb.” “Why has my leg been giving out?”

T

hese are some frequently uttered comments by people who suffer with symptoms related to spinal disc problems and who have been helped without surgery by Dr. John Livingston, a third generation chiropractic physician, now in his 20th year in practice at Livingston Chiropractic Center. Our spines consist of 24 vertebrae, and sandwiched between these bones are

pieces of cartilage called intervertebral discs. The bones provide the support for the body, while the discs act like shock absorbers as we move. Individually, the spinal discs are made of outer bands of cartilage, and inner, jelly-like material called the nucleus. It is the nucleus that provides us with the spring-like action of the disc and gives us flexibility. As we age, the inner nucleus, which is moist and pliable when we are young, slowly begins to dry and stiffen and is less able to provide cushioning in the spine. So when we bend, lift, twist, or fall, the sudden change of posture causes shearing forces to the outer bands of the disc and subsequent tearing. This tearing of the outer disc fibers can result in swelling of the disc, or “herniation.” If the protrusion takes up space where the spinal nerves run, so that it compresses the nerve, this is what is commonly called a “pinched nerve” (or “sciatica” in the back or leg). The pinched nerve can hurt severely or may cause numbness, tingling, weakness or paraesthesias (“pins and needles”). For more than eight years, Dr. Livingston has been successfully treating disc protrusions, herniations and pinched nerves with Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Therapy: a form of therapy that provides gentle, intermittent

and angled traction to the area of the spine where the nerve is pinched, creating a vacuum-like effect that draws the protruded disc away from the spinal nerves and back where it belongs. Rather than surgically trimming or removing the disc with surgery, decompression therapy functions noninvasively, and is often painless, allowing the patient to return more quickly to normal function. Additionally, with decompression therapy, the patient avoids long recovery times, excessive costs of surgery, and the repeated need for cortisone injections or addictive medications. If you suspect a problem with your spinal disc and have pain, numbness or weakness in a limb, make an appointment for an assessment to determine whether Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Therapy is the right choice for you. Dr. Livingston will create a personalized treatment regimen. The program may include adjunctive therapies, exercises and nutrition and be completed in a few weeks. Visit the testimonials page at www. jkldc.com for videos of patients who have benefited from Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Therapy. e’ve all been there. You’ve got an ache, so you go to the doctor’s office for a checkup. The doctor asks some questions, writes on his or her notepad, and then gives you a prescription to suppress your symptoms before rushing out to the next patient. The friendly professionals at Livingston Chiropractic Center feel your pain, and they’re here to help. medicine and send you on your way. This is achieved through collaboration between Dr. John Livingston, D.C.; Dr. Hyo H. Kim, M.D.; and Pat Gates, LMT. The skills of each specialist combine to create well-rounded treatments for a variety of injuries and other medical issues. Livingston Chiropractic handles a wide array of injuries, including those resulting from sports, repetitive stress and automobile accidents, and its specialists are certified under the Ohio Bureau of

Workers’ Compensation to treat workrelated injuries. You can also visit the center if you’re suffering from other issues, such as tendonitis, arthritis, scoliosis or muscle spasms in the spine or limbs. “Many times a medical doctor will write you a prescription for the inflammation or pain, but they won’t get to what the problem actually is,” Dr. Livingston explains. “We stress addressing and assessing the problem before we start to work on it.”

Dr. Livingston is a third-generation chiropractor and has treated thousands of patients during his 18 years of practice. Recognizing that he was “only one piece of the pie,” Dr. Livingston brought together the variety of specialists who are at his office today. “The combination of chiropractic, pain management and massage therapy gives us an advantage,” Dr. Livingston says. “We have multiple specialists who can address the problem under one roof.” Dr. Livingston also works with surgeons in a variety of circumstances. “Say a patient came in and had fallen down the stairs and torn a tendon,” Dr. Livingston explains. “The surgeon would repair the tendon, and then we could help the patient to rehabilitate.” Many times, even with proper treatment a patient is unable to heal due to the consequences of a poor diet. That’s why Dr. Livingston actively incorporates health and wellness into treatments through general nutritional counseling. This gets patients on track in providing their bodies the nutrients necessary to heal their injuries. Furthermore, Dr. Livingston provides this counseling for weight-loss and body-cleansing purposes, as well as to prevent potential future injuries. “We make sure that the health is there and that the body can handle what they want to do with it,” Dr. Livingston says. The center is located at 25111 Miles Road, Suite D, right by the intersection of Miles and Richmond roads in Warrensville Heights. “We employ a multidisciplinary approach to people’s healthcare,” Dr. Livingston says. “By dealing with structural and causative effects, we achieve a faster response.” FLC Livingston Chiropractic Center 25111 Miles Road, Suite D 440.528.0005 jklii@hotmail.com www.jkldc.com

Surgical ExpEriEncE iS a pluS for Your ViSion By Lisa FLoyd-Brown Photos John hoFFart

If you had the choice to not wear glasses or contacts, would you? If you answered yes, you’re not alone. More than 17.5 million laser vision correction procedures have been performed throughout the United States since 1991. Lens Implant procedures are also becoming more popular to reduce dependence on glasses and even reading glasses. Yet, many people are still hesitant to have these vision enhancing procedures performed, which is completely understandable as vision is considered the most precious human sense. Therefore, when choosing a doctor to treat such a delicate and important part of your body, a high level

of surgical experience is a must when it comes to your eyes. The specialized medical team at LasikPlus understands that. They have spent years perfecting life-changing, vision correction procedures. LasikPlus has collectively performed more than 1 million such procedures nationwide since 1995. So, what is LASIK? Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis is a procedure that corrects vision abnormalities by modifying the shape of the cornea. Many people who rely on glasses or contacts can benefit from this quick out-patient

procedure and many see with 20/20 vision or better shortly after treatment. LASIK is best for patients who are 18 or older; have mild to moderate nearsightedness, farsightedness, and yes, even astigmatism. With nearly two decades of experience performing laser vision correction, Dr. Joseph M. Thomas, M.D., and his dedicated team at the LasikPlus Vision Center in Cleveland, use customized laser technology that enables them to have an immediate and positive impact on their patients’ lives. However, LASIK is not the only option. As we get into our 40s, we begin to lose

the capability to see items up close. This loss of near vision is called presbyopia. Simple activities like reading this article become impossible without reading glasses or other visual aid. Cell phones and other portable technologies have become smaller over the years and the need to see fine detail has become a part of our daily lives. Fortunately, Dr. Thomas at LasikPlus offers a solution to presbyopia – a procedure called Refractive Lens Exchange, which removes the aging lens within the eye and replaces it with an artificial lens that will allow you to see objects at distance

As an eye care expert, Dr. Thomas at LasikPlus performs a variety of treatments tailored to meet each of his patient’s needs. In addition to LASIK and Presbyopia correction, he is also an experienced cataract surgeon. Cataracts are the world’s leading cause of preventable blindness. The only effective treatment is early detection and surgical removal. The cataract procedure has greatly evolved and now gives patients the unique opportunity to reduce their need for distance and reading glasses in one simple procedure. Dr. Thomas has performed thousands of cataract procedures using modern, no-stitch technology that allows his patients to quickly return to their daily lives with minimal recovery time.

MAINTAINING BALANCE IN ALL SHAPES AND SIZES BY DYLAN TUSSEL PHOTOS JOHN HOFFART AND COURTESY OF CHAGRIN YOGA

oga is more than just a workout; it’s a practice, fundamental to maintaining holistic balance in your life. And it’s not just for women or people who are thin and flexible. It’s vital for everyone. Noticing that Chagrin Falls lacked a yoga studio, Robin Peavy and Darcy Providente created the welcoming and inclusive Chagrin Yoga in late 2009 to share the life-changing benefits of yoga with the Northeast Ohio community. “The word yoga means to unite or to yoke,” Darcy explains. “Yoga is a practice to unite your mind, body, and spirit, your physical, emotional, and spiritual self.” Many people lose sight of the

28

fundamental purpose of yoga because they’re concerned about their own lack of flexibility after seeing people rolled up in a pretzel, for example. They think they’ll be judged — but, the instructors at Chagrin Yoga are concerned about only one thing: your overall wellness. With a balanced number of male and female instructors who teach everything from the therapeutic level and basics up to vinyasa (flow) and power vinyasa, there’s a spot for everyone. They even offer kids’ classes, as well as prenatal yoga. “Regardless of your age, gender, body type or fitness level, you’re going to be welcome here,” Darcy assures. “There’s a space for you.”

L–R Darcy Providente and Robin Peavy, owners

Chagrin Yoga has three unique and stateof-the-art studios: the Bamboo, Root, and Sage studios. The Bamboo Studio is small and intimate, ideal for private sessions or specialized classes, such as prenatal yoga. The Root Studio is a bit larger, with room for 32 people, and the Sage Studio is the largest, with space for 75 mats. The Sage and Root studios are equipped with state-of-the-art heat and humidity systems that you will not find in any other studio in Northeast Ohio. This heating and humidity helps reduce the chance of injury and improves flexibility. Chagrin Yoga offers a wide range of yoga styles and instructors, so you’re never locked into one instructor or style of yoga, which is important because of the necessity to have balance in your yoga practice. Styles such as vinyasa and power vinyasa are great for those who are looking for a strenuous workout, but it’s important to balance those sessions with slow flow or therapeutic yoga, which are styles that typically suit people who have injuries or need a slower workout for any reason.

“Therapeutic yoga, basic, and slow flow are really good balance for “type A” people who run, who lift a lot of weights, who are feeling muscularly sore,” Darcy explains. “It’s all about understanding equanimity.” If you’re interested in becoming a yoga instructor, Chagrin Yoga’s renowned teacher-training courses are for you. The studio offers both 200- and 500-hour level Yoga Alliance accredited programs. Both training programs provide a quality educational experience that enables students to deepen their personal practice and find their voice as a skilled yoga teacher. For more information, call Darcy directly at 216.513.466

Chagrin Yoga is centrally located at 524 East Washington Street in Chagrin Falls. Visit chagrinyoga.com to learn more about the studio’s offerings and membership benefits and to meet the instructors. Call the studio at 440.247.4884, and experience how yoga will change your life. FLC

fter a very successful 17year career working for a prominent real estate executive in Beachwood, Tracie Cosentino reinvented herself and entered the world of beauty and spas. “I decided to go back to school and do something I absolutely loved while continuing to care for the people around me,” explains Tracie, who opened La Pura Bella Skin and Body in Chagrin Falls earlier this year. “I wanted to do something I could be really proud of.”

FineLifestyles

Tracie is known for her selfless spirit so opening a business to allow her to care for others was a natural transition. She has always taken great care of herself as well, an experience that’s been transformative for her mind, body, and soul. A strong believer in positive energy, Tracie wanted to share the benefits of personal care with others — so she went back to school and excelled through all of her classes at the Brown Aveda Institute. There, she became certified in a wide variety of areas, including relaxation massage,

eyelash extension, microdermabrasion, all types of makeup, and many more vital skin and body services. Tracie partnered with her friend and longtime hairstylist, Lisa Ricchino, who owns Jada Nicole Salon, to run their complementary studios under the same roof. “It was a perfect match,” Tracie says. “Almost everybody who comes in goes from her chair into my room or from my room into her chair.” When you enter La Pura Bella, it’s all about you, what you want, and what

you need. Whether you’re in for a fiveminute service or one that lasts an hour, Tracie gives you her undivided attention and pampers you in her private, intimate studio. Because of Tracie’s holistic approach to skin and body care, you also get a neck and shoulder, hand and arm, and foot and scalp massage with every facial or body treatment. Tracie created an environment in which you don’t have to worry about other people seeing or hearing about your personal business, because she understands that issues people have with their skin, body, and hair can be very personal and private. “I want you to be able to come in and relax. If you want to come in and have a glass of wine, put on a robe, and relax, that’s great!” Tracie says. “You’re among friends. Our clients are like family.” Tracie believes in using Earth’s natural gifts, which is why every product she uses is completely natural and certified organic. She recently launched her own line of La Pura Bella Skin Care and Cosmetics, including everything from lip gloss and eye shadow to anti-aging creams. With her own line, which she herself wears, as well as the GlyMed Plus products she offers, Tracie wants to show you that you don’t have to break the bank to get wonderful skincare. To stay close to her family and friends, Tracie opened La Pura Bella Skin and Body at 45 Pleasant Drive, Suite 303, right next to the falls in Chagrin Falls. Visit lapurabellaskincare.com to see all of the services Tracie offers, and call 216.644.5753 to schedule what’s sure to be the first of many visits to La Pura Bella. “I’ve lived that stressful life, and in just a year and a half I’ve completely transformed my body and myself,” Tracie explains. “It’s not just about getting all dressed up and beautiful on the outside — it’s about being healthy and happy, inside and out.” FLC La Pura Bella Skin and Body 45 Pleasant Drive, Suite 303 Chagrin Falls 216.644.5753 www.lapurabellaskincare.com

he thought of going to the dentist generally doesn’t elicit feelings of joy and excitement: cold chairs, cold personalities, cold tools in your mouth. Nothing on TV but the news. This probably doesn’t ring a bell for Macedonia Dental Health patients, though. By creating an environment in which patients actually feel comfortable and welcome, Dr. Todd Russell, DDS, has boldly taken his practice where no dentist has gone before.

32

FineLifestyles

Cleveland

Dr. Russell is partnered with his associate and fellow Mount Union College alumnus, Dr. Thomas Kaufholz, DDS, whom he describes as “the slow, steady, calming voice that keeps us all on an even keel.” With their combined experience, Macedonia Dental Health offers the widest breadth and highest quality of dental services in the Cleveland area. As the official team dentist for the Lake Erie Monsters and the Cleveland

Gladiators, Dr. Russell has extensive experience working with athletes. A longtime volunteer youth hockey coach himself, Dr. Russell has worked with the Monsters for six years, and he worked with the Cleveland Lumberjacks for three years before that. Dr. Russell has developed an expertise in concussion prevention that is unparalleled among other Cleveland-area dentists. “My knowledge base is based on experience,” Dr. Russell explains. “I am living it.”

L–R TOP–BOTTOM Dr. Thomas Kaufholz and Dr. Todd Russell; Paulette Pilato

Beyond working with sports players to help them avoid concussions, Dr. Russell also works alongside doctors who treat concussions to get players back on the field. “My knowledge base, my treatment modalities, my working with other doctors who treat these injuries gives me a strong foundation for working with players, whether they’re amateurs, high schoolers, college players, or professionals,” Dr. Russell explains. “I’m a good doctor to have as a part of your team.” Dr. Russell’s experience extends far beyond working with sports teams, as he currently has experience with all dental procedures by both performing and observing how they are done. “I’ve done it all” he says. “This gives me an incredible wealth of knowledge to help guide patients through treatment options and a greater experience level to that of anyone else in the field.” Dr.

Russell not only offers singular services, but also actively works to understand the needs of each patient and to work with him or her in developing a treatment plan that will satisfy those needs.

Visit drtoddrussell.com for more information about the dentists and the services they offer, including popular cosmetic procedures such as BOTOX and Juvederm.

The thought of going to the dentist for a series of treatments that will total, say, $10,000 is daunting, and Dr. Russell understands this. For this reason, unlike many other dentists, he breaks down treatments into phases, which he prioritizes based on urgency and cost. “I get the most important operations done first, and at an affordable cost,” he explains. “Instead of saying you owe me $9,000 right now, I say it’ll be $9,000 but spread over more time, like two or three years. They give me goals; I give them options for how to achieve them; and we come up with a plan.”

ccording to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 286,000 breast augmentations were performed in 2012, making it the number one cosmetic procedure performed in the U.S. Breast augmentation improves breast contour with minimal complications, scarring and discomfort and a relatively short recovery time. It’s important to look for a physician who is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons as well as The Aesthetic Society, which sets stringent requirements in both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery.

Choices of implants include silicone gel or saline. Both are safe as tested per FDA regulations. Silicone implants are frequently preferred as their appearance and feel are more natural. Saline implants are firmer and have a higher propensity to develop wrinkling, particularly if the patient has little subcutaneous fat and very thin skin. A new product by Allergan Corporation is the 410 (tear drop) implant. Implants come in ranges of profiles and sizes. Different profiles — low, mid and high — will allow for an enhanced change in the projection of the breast tissue, as well as the degree of cleavage that can be achieved. There are primarily three implantation techniques utilized: transaxillary through the axilla, inframammary just below the breast within the crease, and peri areolar around the areola. Each of these approaches have different features and advantages which should be discussed at the time of your consultation. The implant location is typically subglandular, under the breast tissue,

34

FineLifestyles

Cleveland

or submuscular. There are however implants located partially submuscular and partially subglandular, frequently occurring with a patient who has had children. Keeping the implant beneath the muscle reduces the potential for infection and scar formation which can form around the implant and provides better camouflage of the implant. Finally, when mammograms are obtained, a submuscular location provides better positioning of the breast tissue. The implant materials have undergone extensive testing for long-term biocompatibility, degradation, and sensitivity. Because of their FDA classification, implants are designed to last a lifetime. However, the integrity of the device needs to be monitored over the lifetime of the patient. Further, the FDA has required a follow up study for remote diseases over the next 10 years. Allergan Corporation is in the sixth year of such a study involving 52,000 women in the U.S. The ability of a patient to breast feed may not be clear until pregnancy. Success frequently depends upon the amount of breast tissue the individual has. When it’s time for a mammogram, you should inform the radiology department if you have implants. There is no data to suggest that breast implants inhibit the ability to detect cancer on the breast. Further, data does not support any increased risk of breast cancer in women with breast implants. When all of the factors discussed above — technique, location and material — have been carefully considered in the decision, the satisfaction rate for patients with implants is extremely high. O

ne of the best things to happen to Cleveland in the past decade is the renovation of the Cleveland Museum of Art. While we certainly missed seeing the pieces kept in storage and had to wend our way around the construction for the past few years, the results have far outweighed the inconvenience. This renovation is not the first that the museum has undergone. This design consolidated prior remodeling to allow for a more logical and continuous flow through the galleries. The Cleveland Museum of Art was founded in 1913 by the conveyance of land from Jeptha H. Wade II, its purpose being “for the benefit of all the people forever,” according to the language of the deed. The museum officially opened on June 6, 1916, at a cost of $1.25 million. Original endowments made by Hinman B. Hurlbut, John Huntington, and Horace Kelley continue to support the museum. An

38

education department was established early in the Museum’s history with a wide variety of programs for children and adults. 1958 was a significant year for the museum. It was then that the building doubled in size, Leonard Hanna Jr. provided a sizeable bequest, and Dr. Sherman Emery Lee became the museum’s third director. 1971 marks the opening of a new wing, developed by noted architect, Marcel Breuer. Finally, under the direction of Katherine Lee Reid, Dr. Lee’s daughter and the museum’s sixth director, ground was broken for the most recent expansion and renovation, designed by Rafael Viñoly. Through a series of well-publicized phases, the Cleveland Museum of Art has introduced its new galleries. In June 2008 Cleveland was able to visit the renovated 1916 Beaux-Arts building, whose galleries display European and American art from the 17th to the 19th centuries. The new east wing, which focuses

David Franklin, director

on Western art from the 19th Century to the present, opened to the public in June 2009. Lower-level galleries opened in 2010, where visitors could find Egyptian and Western art from antiquity up to the early medieval period. Most dramatically, Cleveland has witnessed the completion of the museum’s astonishing new Ames Family Atrium and the addition of Provenance, a highly acclaimed new farm-to-table restaurant, cafÊ, and store on October 28th. Just three months later, Gallery One opened, featuring the merger of high art and high tech in a wonderfully accessible education center. The final phase of the renovation is anticipated in late 2013 with the completion of the Asian art galleries in the museum’s west wing. Judging from its sizeable economic impact, the Cleveland Museum of Art is not simply a pretty face but rather an investment in the community. An economic study

FineLifestyles

Cleveland

from the Cleveland firm of Kleinhenz & Associates demonstrated that the museum is expected to generate $140 million in economic activity in Cuyahoga County by the end of the 2012 fiscal year. Approximately one-third of the visitors comes from outside Ohio and collectively spends $80 million per year. As a comparison, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame brought in $123 million, in 2012 dollars, based on a similar study of its economic impact done in 2005. While the total cost of the museum’s renovation was $350 million, the construction itself produced $240 million in wages for the community in the past seven years, for a total economic impact of $593 million. Clearly the support of the arts is essential to a healthy local economy (source: “The Cleveland Museum of Art has Big Economic Impact, New Study Says” by Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer, April 16, 2012). The current director of this economic asset to Cleveland is David Franklin,

an internationally respected scholar of Italian Renaissance and baroque art. His tenure began in September 2010.

(“Technology That Serves to Enhance, Not Distract” The New York Times, March 21, 2013).

Those economic numbers likely will grow once word spreads among art and technology lovers. The Cleveland Museum of Art fostered a collaborative effort among its various departments — including its curatorial, information management and technology services, education and interpretation, and design departments — to produce a technological masterpiece. The New York Times featured the Museum in a recent article: “In the museum world, everyone’s watching Cleveland right now,” said Erin Coburn, a museum consultant who has worked at both the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Though other museums have experimented with interactive technology, the extent of Cleveland’s program is unprecedented, she said. “They’ve put a lot out there for other museums to learn from”

The Gallery One educational center debuted in January. The Maltz Family Foundation supported this innovative space with a generous $10 million grant. Two interactive screens for children and six for adults allow museum visitors to access additional information about the artwork they feature by touching hotspots on the screens. Each screen presents a different theme related to its corresponding artwork. For example, with the interactive “make a face” screen, users can access facial-recognition software to generate photo-booth-style strips that display their faces alongside those in any of 189 pieces of art from the museum’s collections. These images are displayed on the large LED screen near the gallery’s entry, and users also have the capability of sharing them with others via email, right from the screen.

The Collection Wall is the largest multitouch screen in the United States, featuring 40 feet of interactive, microtile wall that includes 3,500 works of art from the permanent collection. The display changes every 40 seconds, grouping works by theme and type, time period, materials, and techniques. Visitors will want to bring their iPads, or rent one from the Museum for $5, as the Collection Wall touch screen allows users to download existing tours or to create their own, transforming their iPads into their own personal tour guides for the galleries. It’s also a good idea to download ArtLens, the museum’s iPad application, before your visit. The initial download takes about 20 minutes. If you wait until you’re at the museum to load the app, connect to the CMA guest Wi-Fi, sit back, and enjoy watching the Collection Wall flow. It’ll seem like a quick 20 minutes. The ArtLens app will guide visitors through the museum via its five main features:

near you now, scanning, tours, today, and favorites. Current exhibits at the museum include Last Days of Pompeii: Decadence, Apocalypse, Resurrection (through July 7); Renaissance Textiles (through Dec. 15); Tantra in Buddhist Art (in the new Focus Gallery through Sept. 15); Less is More: Minimal Prints, featuring work by Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt, and Frank Stella (June 16 to Oct. 20); Carrie Mae Weems: Three Decades of Photography and Video (June 30 to Sept. 29); and Ai Weiwei: Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads (July 27 to Jan. 26, 2014). Time magazine named Ai Weiwei among the 10 most persecuted artists in the world for his treatment by the Chinese government. The Museum website, clevelandart. org, does a fantastic job of promoting the numerous events and classes on its calendar. In particular, look for Parade the Circle at noon June 8 and for the

spectacular party, Solstice 2013, on June 22 — tickets are $60 for non-members, $30 for members. Cleveland is extremely fortunate to have access to this amazing institution and to be able to share it with visitors from across the globe. Jeptha H. Wade II would be incredibly proud to know that his conveyance of land, 100 years ago, has truly met its mission: “for the benefit of all the people forever.” FLC

But when the wine bar closed its doors in the late ’90s, Beth and her friends realized it had been the only alternative to the many beer joints around the neighborhood. “We said, ‘Oh, we should open a wine bar,’ ” Beth says. And that’s exactly what they did. In April 1999, Grovewood opened its doors as a true wine bar that offered a vast selection of 150 wines, with 100 available by the glass. There was no food beyond cheese plates, hotdogs,

chili dogs, and chili. That summer, a CIA-trained chef visited the wine bar and noticed that it wasn’t really using its kitchen. “He came in and said, ‘I could do something with the kitchen,’ ” Beth recalls. Shortly after Grovewood subcontracted the kitchen space to the chef, the wine bar began to garner attention for its unique combination of fresh, local foods and seemingly endless array of wines. “That began the transition from a wine bar with

a pool table and bowling machine to a restaurant with a really amazing wine list that brings people in from all over the city,” Beth explains. “We still had that bar atmosphere while serving high-quality and inventive dishes.” The chef’s kitchen innovation had turned the wine bar into something more. Eventually Grovewood shed the last vestige of its former self, which was the bowling machine, to become Northeast Ohio’s fine wine and dining destination. Fourteen years after opening its doors, Grovewood still has a 150-wine selection, with 100 available by the glass, as well as a nationally recognized rotating craft beer selection by draft and by bottle. “When you first pull up, you think to yourself, ‘Am I in the right place?’ ” Beth jokes. “Then you go inside, and there are white tablecloths and friendly service and really, really great food.” The menu draws inspiration from cuisines from all over the world, which comes together with U.S. influences to create what they call New American cuisine.

Saving the Endangered

n an era of cheap, mass-produced pastries being sold at large chain stores, Lucy’s Sweet Surrender Bakery is trying to rescue the authentic, small-town bakery culture. After its big move to Shaker Heights, this historic bakery has re-established itself as the go-to shop for everything from doughnuts to wedding cakes. “There aren’t many bakeries like the old days,” says Mike Feigenbaum, owner of Lucy’s Sweet Surrender. “When I grew up in this neighborhood, there were three bakeries right there.” Mike moved to California to attend the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco where he specialized in baking. Then, he moved back to Cleveland and opened his own shop before eventually purchasing Lucy’s, an old-world Hungarian bakery,

in 1994. The employees he inherited in the transaction brought their Eastern European charm to the shop, and it was through them that Mike was introduced to Marika, his wife of 13 years, who helps to run the bakery today. The new location—at 20314 Chagrin Boulevard, bordering the Sussex neighborhood in Shaker— is in a comfortable and accessible neighborhood, within walking distance from home for many Shaker residents. While cakes and fancy pastries are very popular, Lucy’s also has a variety of bread that’s baked fresh daily. Back in the day, when bakeries were central parts of the community, locals would routinely stop in to buy a week’s supply of bread and pastries. Lucy’s preserves this nostalgic tradition in a time during which

many people have fallen into the habit of buying mass-produced, artificially flavored bread and pastries at supermarket chains. This summer, Lucy’s will be at the North Union Farmers Market at Shaker Square every Saturday and in Chagrin Falls every Sunday. Lucy’s also offers a convenient and affordable custom-delivery service around the Cleveland area. The website, lucyssweetsurrender.com, has hundreds of options from which to choose — but, with Lucy’s custom cakes and pastry trays, your imagination is your only limitation when ordering the perfect dessert for your occasion (or just to satisfy that lingering sweet tooth). “We do custom deliveries for a lot of different things,” Mike explains. “I’ve delivered custom pastry trays for memorial

services and work meetings. I’ve taken birthday cakes to offices. Just today I delivered some loaves of bread.” Beyond local deliveries, Lucy’s ships anywhere in the United States via UPS. And, if a loved one is serving in the armed forces, you can still send him or her a little taste of home. “There’s a local soldier who’s been back and forth between Iraq and Afghanistan,” Mike says. “His family and I have been shipping him pastries through APO (Army Post Office) all the time.” To visit Lucy’s at its convenient new location by Chagrin and Warrensville Center Road, turn into the rear parking lot off of Lomond Boulevard and enter through the backdoor. “Like” Lucy’s Sweet Surrender Bakery on Facebook to see shop updates and photos. You can email info@lucyssweetsurrender. com with any questions, stop in to check out the freshly baked morsels, or call 216.752.0828 to place a custom order ahead of time. veryone knows about J. Pistone Market & Gathering Place. What you might not know, is that J. Pistone is stocked with a variety of rare and unique wines, and you can have all of your favorite dishes from J. Pistone served at your special events. J. Pistone, which was opened more than a decade ago by siblings John and Joan Pistone, has a wide selection of wines available in market, ranging from $10 to $100 per bottle. Many are imported from smaller, lesser-known producers in France and Italy and can’t be found in other Cleveland-area markets. To introduce Clevelanders to its uncommon selection of fine wines, J. Pistone holds a wine tasting every Saturday afternoon where, for a nominal fee, visitors can try

a few of the wines and learn about them. “Our tastings here are educational more than they are anything else,” says Walt Wirth, the market’s wine expert. “We’re showing wines that are from places like France and that you might not have heard of before.” The wine offerings at J. Pistone, combined with its assortment of delicious, fresh food, makes this market a destination — or, as John says, a “food mecca.” “A lot of times when you go to your local wine market, there’s not much else but wine,” John explains. “Here, it’s the whole package.” At J. Pistone, you can stop in and have a glass of wine as you browse and try the selection of freshly made desserts and foods. The staff of food connoisseurs can help you with

pairing so that you can always have the right wine to complement your meal. They know exactly what’s in the food they serve, because it is all made in house, from scratch. Seating is available if you choose to eat in, or take the prepared dishes home and serve dinner at your own table — without the worry of kitchen cleaning later. The great thing about having all the food prepared in the market is that if you’re planning to throw a party or hold a gathering of any sort, there’s no guessing game as to which foods and drinks would best suit the occasion — you can stop in and try them all before deciding. “Catering kind of stems a lot from what we do in our café here,” John says. Anything you see in the store is

available through J. Pistone’s catering services. And, everything is sold by the pound, so you know exactly how much food you’ll get and how much it’ll cost. If, on the other hand, you want something that’s not in the market, or if you have certain dietary restrictions, J. Pistone can accommodate that, too. “You might want to do a Tuscan or a Spanish or a North African themed menu,” John suggests. “We work with you to figure out what type of food you’re looking for, what you want, what type of event it is, and we make it happen.” J. Pistone is conveniently located at 3245 Warrensville Center Road, about a block south of South Woodland Road, in Shaker Heights. e live in a world that glamorizes athletes and romanticizes female petiteness. Everyone wants to be the person who goes hard in her workouts and never seems to slow down. But, what’s happening behind that slim, sexy façade? Yana Salwan was that athlete throughout her entire adult life. She even became a successful group fitness director for the area’s largest gyms. But, such strenuous workout routines began to take their toll.

52

“I got to the point where all the activities I’d done — going to the gym, skiing, running — kind of wreaked a little havoc on my body,” Yana explains. “I discovered the barre workout, and it gave me something to do that was a little more body-friendly, or less strenuous on the body while still keeping me fit.” The barre workout is popular among celebrities in California and New York, and Yana wanted to bring it to Cleveland to share with other women who wanted to be slim and fit without

putting their bodies through the ringer. So, Yana opened Barre Cleveland, the first barre studio in Northeast Ohio. The barre workout is a merger of several popular workouts, including yoga and Pilates, as well as ballet. Barre takes the body-sculpting elements of each to focus on the areas you care about most: thighs, hips, butt, abs, and arms. Slow, sustained movements immediately followed by stretches allow you to strengthen these muscles without bulking them up.

By avoiding high-impact movements and heavy lifting, the barre workout doesn’t lead to the same joint and back pain that results from traditional workout styles. To the contrary, it is restorative and actually helps you to improve your posture, strengthen your core, and focus on the overall health of your back — all while getting the benefit of a cardio and strength workout.

Barre Cleveland provides everything you’ll need for a workout, from mats and equipment to purified water and showers, at no additional cost. It offers a variety of workout packages for everyone’s needs, from unlimited class packages to private workouts. You can even introduce your girlfriends to the barre workout by having a private barre party.

Best of all, Barre Cleveland is a refuge where women can go to work out with other women, without the worry of receiving the unwanted male attention that’s common in traditional gym settings. This female-only boutique fitness studio in Beachwood will help you to sculpt your body, become slim, and feel sexy, all with the support of a strong community of women who are experiencing the same struggles in pursuit of the same goals as you. Women at every fitness level are invited to participate; everyone can benefit from this workout. “We accommodate every fitness level in every class,” Yana says. “It’s very inviting — all the ladies know what it feels like to be in class for the first time.”

The Barre Cleveland studio is located at 3737 Park East Drive, Suite 209, in Beachwood. It’s west of I-271 and accessible off the Harvard Road and Chagrin Boulevard exits. “Like” BARRE Cleveland on Facebook to keep up with the current events at the studio. verybody wants to be in shape, but getting there can be overwhelming. Staci and Bill Russell, founders of CrossFit Cleveland on the west side, understand the importance — and difficulty — of getting and staying fit, which is why they partnered with Patrick Flannery, an active CrossFit athlete, to open Great Lakes CrossFit in the heart of Cleveland’s East Side in 2010. With expert trainers leading group workouts that change every day, CrossFit gives people the tools and motivation they need to be their best, both inside and outside of the gym. “It’s not only about physical results,” Bill explains. “When they see what they’re capable of, their mental attitude and confidence will soar.”

54

FineLifestyles

CrossFit is an intensive and multidimensional approach to fitness that focuses on vital skills, such as power, strength, and agility. At Great Lakes CrossFit, trainers emphasize strength and conditioning to improve the overall wellness of their members. By pushing their members to complete seemingly unmanageable workouts, the trainers help members to realize their true potentials. “It gives them a ‘don’t quit’ attitude that translates into the real world: they realize they can do what they didn’t think they could,” Bill says. “It’s impossible to put a price on that confidence and willpower.” Motivating yourself to go to the gym several times per week and to stay in

shape alone can be very challenging. The group setting in which CrossFit holds its workout sessions creates a sense of community among members who work out together, which, in turn, establishes a strong network of support and motivation. “We have a great community,” Staci says. “Members get to know each other, and then they do things socially together. It becomes a family.” Great Lakes CrossFit even has a program for kids, ages eight to 12. Whether they’re the type to laze around in front of the TV or the type who already excels athletically, kids will learn to push themselves further and become more well-rounded and physically fit by participating in CrossFit Kids. “We use fitness as a method to

teach about responsibility, commitment and self confidence. We challenge your kids to be better, better kids and better people,” says Staci. Although workouts are held in group settings, they are tailored to each individual participant’s abilities, so everyone will make it through and feel great about himself or herself for doing so. Co-founder, Patrick Flannery, is the head coach at Great Lakes CrossFit. He manages most of the daily workout sessions, as well as programming the workouts on a weekly basis. Patrick always advises new people that “The workouts can be scaled to any age or ability level. You do not need to be in great shape to start CrossFit, we’ll get you there.” For those who might not feel comfortable working out in a larger group setting, Great Lakes CrossFit has an Executive Fitness Starter Program. This six-week program helps people to get back into shape in smaller groups of six to eight, who have the gym to themselves during their scheduled workouts. “It’s like having a personal trainer,” Staci says, “without the personal trainer rates.” Great Lakes CrossFit opens early enough for people to stop in on their way to work, get in a workout, shower, and start their days with a sense of accomplishment. If you’re interested in giving CrossFit a try, stop in for a free introductory class held at 11 a.m. every Saturday. The gym is conveniently located at 5075 Taylor Drive, just off Miles Road at the 271/480 split, neighboring Shaker Heights, Chagrin Falls, Beachwood, and Solon. Being the only sporting-goods store that sells exclusively hockey equipment on the East Side of Cleveland, Timeout Sports provides a level of customer service as well as product knowledge and insight that is unmatched by other stores in the area. Rob himself grew up with hockey, starting off in youth hockey and then moving up to the high school level. Later, he began coaching high school, first at Lake Catholic and now at Saint Ignatius. Through these experiences Rob gained a thorough understanding

of the needs of hockey players, both from a player’s perspective as well as from a coach’s. This same level of passion for hockey can be found in everyone at Timeout Sports — several employees have played club hockey and taken their teams to nationals, and another competes in hockey events all over the world. “They’re definitely good guys,” Rob assures. “They’re all friendly, and they know what they’re doing.” Most hockey retailers adhere to “MAP Price,” which stands for “Minimum Advertised Price” and prevents the stores from advertising their

equipment at any price below the minimum set by the manufacturers. As a result, equipment prices are basically identical across hockey shops. What isn’t identical, though, are the levels of hockey expertise. “What sets us apart is our knowledge and customer service—we’re knowledgeable about what we sell, and we’re confident in our understanding of customer needs and what they’re looking for,” Rob explains. “We can help you find what products would work best for you, based on your playing style or skill level.” Timeout Sports also handles team apparel for various youth and highschool teams in the area, such as Shaker Heights High School, Hudson, and Gilmour. Whether they’re working one-on-one with customers, as they do each and every day, or whether they’re handling entire team orders, the experts at Timeout Sports take great pride in making sure that every order is handled properly and efficiently and, moreover, in making sure that every customer is satisfied with his or her experience. HOW TO THe

by Rebecca SchneideReit

I

n a place where the “New Town” was founded in 1348, visitors have a lot of ground to cover. Thankfully, much of Prague can be conquered on foot. “You will thank your lucky stars if you invest in a really good pair of walking shoes,” says Rebecca Funk, manager of Thomas Cook Travel. “Prague is a great city for strolling.” Your first stroll should be over the Charles Bridge, where silent religious statues compete with day vendors for your attention, and up the hill to Prague Castle and St. Vitus Cathedral. Once you’ve basked in their old-world splendour, trek back down to Wenceslas Square: historically, this was a site of political import, but these days it’s largely devoted to shopping and nightlife. A short walk from there is the Old Town Square, where the Orloj (astronomical clock) ticks away the minutes, as it has for over

58

FineLifestyles

Cleveland

five centuries. (Hang onto your wallet. The Old Town Square is a tourist hotspot, so it’s also a haven for pickpockets.) If you’re the museum type, Prague’s offerings include the Mucha Museum, the Franz Kafka Museum, the KGB Museum, and the Museum of Communism (where there’s something a little ironic about the extensive gift shop). If you’re a theatregoer, check out the National Marionette Theatre, which features puppet versions of Mozart’s Magic Flute and Don Giovanni, and the Prague State Opera, where the repertoire currently includes Carmen, La Traviata and Madama Butterfly. A host of other destinations— from the solemn Old Jewish Cemetery to the five-storey Karlovy Lázně nightclub to the charming Prague Zoo—make it certain you’ll run out of time before you’ve seen all Prague has to offer.

A UNeSCO World Heritage site nestled on the banks of the Vltava River, Český Krumlov is the perfect followup to Prague. “It’s been discovered, but it’s not overrun by tourists yet,” explains Rebecca, who calls the town an “unspoiled medieval wonder.” Since you’re in on the secret, be a polite tourist, and don’t nickname it “Český”— that’s like visiting Halifax and telling the locals you love “Nova.” It’s best to travel between Prague and Český Krumlov by bus or train. The former may be slightly quicker, but neither is likely to take more than five hours at most. Český Krumlov is another walking city; at the cobbled heart of the town, there’s really no other way to get around. Fashionable readers—leave your heels at home. Cobblestones and stilettos don’t mix. Head up the hill to the castle, where you can tour the interior, drink in the gardens, watch the live bears in the (dry) moat, or climb the tower to see the city from a royal’s perspective. And try to visit the castle’s theatre, a perfectly maintained baroque treasure.

The theatre’s fragile beauty means it can host only a handful of performances yearly, but that’s all right—the decor is the real star. If you can, schedule your visit to Český Krumlov to coincide with the Five-Petalled Rose Festival in June: its theatricals, pyrotechnics, and costumed revellers redefine the “renaissance fair.” Rebecca has a couple pointers for hassle-free Czech travel. First off, plan for potential rain on your parade. “Always have an umbrella. Always. I think that’s a good rule of thumb for being in europe, period,” she says, adding, “Bring as many toiletries as you can from home.” After all, there’s a good chance you won’t be able to find your favourite shampoo in the Czech Republic: even if you do, it’ll be imported and priced accordingly. With a little bit of forethought, though, the Czech Republic is yours for the taking —and Prague and Český Krumlov provide the perfect combination of metropolitan glamour and intimate charm. Don’t forget your walking shoes. FLC

EXPERTAdvice Indoor Air Quality

Your IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) issues in your home are like a three-legged stool with each of the legs representing three key strategies to improving your indoor environment: eliminating the source, filtering the air and proper humidification.

Steven Smylie Smylie One Heating, Cooling, & Plumbing, Inc. 8323 Mayfield Road Chesterland 440.449.HEAT (4328) sssmy1@sbcglobal.net www.smylieone.com

It’s not just about the energy savings. It’s a fact that today’s homes are built much tighter than in the past. The tighter the home envelope, the less outdoor air can leak into and out of your structure. Homeowners are also upgrading their existing homes with insulation and new windows, sealing everything in sight. Thus, tighter homes help reduce your heating and cooling bills, but at the same time indoor air contaminants are increasing by not allowing outdoor air intrusion which dilutes these contaminants. We can’t always open the windows due to allergies and pollutants, so what should we do to create a healthier home environment?

Eliminating the Source The best way to disinfect mold, bacteria, and infectious disease and decrease volatile organic compounds in your indoor environment is by using ultraviolet germicidal lights with a patented photo-catalytic process. UV lighting picks up where many filters stop by actually destroying trapped particles. UV (ultraviolet) lights have been used in the medical and hightech industries for decades and are now available for residential use. UV lights can reduce indoor-air pollution levels significantly, ensuring a healthy environment for your family. All of this cleansing comes without the use of any toxic chemicals. Adding UV lights to your HVAC system is beneficial to your HVAC system’s components, too. They can extend the life of your home’s heating and cooling system significantly because the system’s components have less work if the air is cleaner. UV germicidal lights can operate continuously, even if the HVAC system is offline, ensuring that your home remains free of toxic contaminants and pollutants 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Filtering the Air Most homeowners think that they are being diligent by changing their one-inch filter every month. However, dust, pollens, mold spores, bacteria, allergens, pet dander, dust

mites, other pests and tobacco smoke will always exist with this method of filtering. The answer is to upgrade your air filtration system with the correct filtering device that suits your family’s needs. Whether you install a mechanical filter, an electronic filter or a filter that can “capture and kill” unwanted organisms, each one will be an upgrade to the standard one inch. An electronic air cleaner can remove up to 99 percent of the airborne impurities that exist in your home. That is up to 20 times more than a standard furnace filter. When selecting an air cleaner for your home, choose one that uses a HEPA filter system, which removes even extremely small particles from the air you breathe. Proper Humidification Having the proper humidification in your home is important to minimize the number and growth of unhealthy airborne pollutants. In cold climates the relative humidity of outdoor air can be as low as 10 percent rh which is the same as the Sahara Desert. When this penetrates your home it can cause a variety of unwanted conditions such as dry nasal passages, sore throats, increased household dust, damage to woodwork or furnishings due to cracking, and of course annoying static shocks. Having a properly sized humidification system in your home will help eliminate these and will also improve comfort levels in your home. Paying attention to these three factors will give your Indoor Air Quality the stability your home and family deserve. FLC

o home is complete without a garage, and no garage is complete without a door. Yet, when people talk about home remodels, this fundamental piece of architecture is seldom mentioned. Not only are garage doors essential, but also they’re the largest moving objects in a home and can create significant safety hazards if they are old, low quality, or not properly installed. If that’s not enough of a reason to reconsider the way you think about your garage door, then consider this: research has shown that garage doors are, monetarily, the second-best investment you can make in your home, with an 84 percent return on investment. Luckily, the professionals at Action Door have you covered. Using only top-of-theline products from Wayne-Dalton, which produces beautiful, safe, and innovative

garage doors and parts, Action Door has been Northeast Ohio’s most trusted name in garage door installation and maintenance for the past 45 years. There are many dangers associated with garage doors. First, as they close, their sections are briefly separated by small gaps that quickly and forcefully close as the sections straighten out vertically. Those gaps may be small, but they’re large enough for something, such as a finger, to get caught inside them. And if that happens — well, you get the point. Garage doors also are enormous and heavy, and when they come down, they come down hard. Photo eyes are sensors positioned along the bottom of garage doors that can prevent the doors from crushing whatever is beneath them. When something (or someone) breaks the beams, the door automatically stops

and goes back up. With these dangers in mind, Action Door sells doors that are pinch-resistant and equipped with photo eyes, preventing the potential dangers you will find in older or lower-quality garage doors. Not only are Action Door’s products safe, but also beautiful. There are many colors, styles, and windows from which to choose, the hottest being the carriagehouse doors. They go up and down but have hinges and handles, as if they swung open. Everybody wants one. And, you can complement your stylish new door with an equally impressive motor operator. eader Roofing, Heating and Cooling has come a long way since its inception nearly a century ago. It began in 1920 with Ben Reader, a tinner who worked with gutters and sheet metal. Ben’s son, Don, joined after serving in World War II, and helped his dad to expand into the newly emerging gas furnace market. While Ben handled the metalwork, Don took care of the electrical and gas work as the father-son duo began to specialize in HVAC systems. Now the company handles much more.

Anything above and including the gutter is work that we do: masonry repairs, siding on dormers and ventilation. These roofers work with all types of roofing materials such as tile, slate, wood shake, copper and all types of single ply materials for flat roofs and now they even install skylights and repair chimneys. They do everything from a small repair to installing a completely new roof, and they are ready in the event that damage from a storm

or other disaster calls for emergency re-roofing repairs. “All of our technicians and estimators are qualified from extensive training and many years of hands on experience,” Stuart says. Of utmost importance to the Reader roofers is ethics — when you call them out to the job, you know you can trust them. Their experienced estimators will check out the situation and give you

a hands-on, honest, professional opinion on how to move forward. “We’ll give an honest evaluation,” Stuart says. They ask themselves, “If it were our roof, what would we do?” Unfortunately, not every company in the roofing industry does the same. “People will try to sell you a roof when all you need is a small repair,” Stuart says. “We’ll do what we think is needed. We’re providing a service, not trying to sell you something you don’t need.” Have a dirty roof? Reader Roofing offers roof cleaning, as well as mold and stain removal services. Apart from taking care of all your roofing needs, they also handle installations of new furnaces, water heaters, boilers and air conditioning units, both residential and commercial. These roofers handle work all around Northeast Ohio, and they care as much about the community as they do about your roof. They support other area businesses by working mainly with suppliers that are local rather than national. Another way that Reader Roofing contributes to the area is through its artful restoration work on the roofs of historical buildings, such as Shaker Square, a Cleveland landmark that is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. For more information, visit readerroofing.com, and call 216.451.1355 for a free consultation. Whether you have a modest bungalow or a large mansion, Reader Roofing has you covered — literally. “There’s nothing that we run into residentially that we can’t handle,” Stuart says. “If it’s up on the roof, we’ll take care of it.” FLC

EXPERTAdvice Choosing the Perfect Flooring for Your Home

Ryan Wien Marshall Carpet One & Rug Gallery 1451 SOM Center Road Mayfield Heights 440.449.4977 ryan@marshallcarpet.com marshallcarpet.com

T

here are various flooring options for your home space, and each has its own purpose. We at Marshall Carpet One & Rug Gallery can help you pick the perfect flooring for any room in your house, but to get you started I’ll tell you a little about a few of the popular options. Carpet is the most common flooring option, probably because it’s soft, warm,

colorful, and relatively inexpensive. It also comes in a variety of colors, patterns, piles, styles, fibers, and paddings. Don’t go too cheap on the padding, because you’ll be sacrificing comfort and reducing the life of the carpet. While carpet is warm and comfortable, it also retains dirt, dust, and stains. It can trigger allergies, and over time it also tends to wear down in high-traffic areas. Hardwood is the most desired flooring option, as it comes in a variety of styles and adds intrinsic value to the home. Hardwood comes in many species, stains, scrapes, and widths, allowing for unique and varied styles. When budgeting for hardwood floor, be sure to include the cost of area rugs, as they are essential in living areas and bedrooms. Keep in mind that hardwood scratches, dents, and changes color over time; you should avoid installing it where it will be exposed to water or high levels of moisture. Ceramic and porcelain tile also adds intrinsic value to the home, plus it’s easy to clean, waterproof, and maintenancefree (except for the grout). Tiles come in diverse styles, colors, shapes, and finishes. As the cost of tile has decreased in recent years, accent mosaic tiles have become especially popular and affordable additions to bathrooms, kitchens, and backsplashes. When using natural stone,

keep in mind that it’s porous and therefore needs to be sealed to avoid stains. The drawbacks of this flooring are that it is cold and hard, so it can be rough on backs and knees for people who stand on it for extended periods of time. The grout also runs the risk of being stained, although you can have it professionally cleaned or even replaced. Luxury vinyl tile is the fastest-growing flooring, as it can achieve the same look as wood planks or ceramic/porcelain tiles at a lower cost. Some vinyl tiles also can offer a realistic ceramic look while being much softer and warmer than real ceramic. This tile is great for families with children and pets, as it’s much more resistant than hardwood to scrapes, dents, tears, and scratches. It also is perfect for basements and other areas exposed to moisture. DIY customers love the easy-to-install click-n-lock floating option, as it generally is easy to lay. Installing it on stairs, however, is difficult and labor-intensive. Also, unlike the styles this tile emulates, it does not add intrinsic value to the home. Other flooring options include laminate, sheet vinyl, cork, bamboo, rubber, and poured floors. Come and see us at Marshall Carpet One to learn more and find the flooring that’s perfect for your needs. FLC

Personal service from the Local Specialists By Dylan Tussel Photos John hoffarT

T

he name says “carpet,” but when it comes to flooring, these men do it all.

“We’re a small enough mom-andpop store,” Ryan says, “but we can handle everything.”

Marshall Carpet One & Rug Gallery at 1451 SOM Center Road in Mayfield Heights is a local, family-owned company that focuses exclusively on providing the finest flooring services at the best prices in the area. Marshall Carpet has been in the Wien family for three generations since Marshall Wien opened its doors in 1966. Nearly 50 years later, the store has been passed down to his sons, Marc and Chuck. Most recently, Marc’s sons, Matt, Ryan, and Nate, have started to take up the family business.

The 17,000-square-foot Marshall Carpet showroom is filled with a seemingly endless selection of flooring materials, such as hardwood, tile, carpet, and area rugs. The store’s exclusive focus on flooring gives its employees expertise that you won’t find at larger, more generalized home-goods stores that sell everything from flooring to lawn ornaments and windows.

72

FineLifestyles

Cleveland

“That’s what’s made us a leader in Northeast Ohio — we’ve never expanded,” Ryan says. “We concentrate on flooring.”

Such extensive knowledge and experience is accompanied by the showroom’s family-centered atmosphere. Employees who aren’t part of the Wien family are like an extension of it, as they all have been part of the business for at least 16 years. And, just as if customers were walking into their own homes, they are greeted by the familiar pitter-patter of paws from the newest member of the family, Omar Jr., a very friendly black lab. The personal touch doesn’t end once you pick out the perfect flooring and exit the shop, as Marshall Carpet’s flooring experts see the job through to completion. Each of the shop’s floor installers has at

least 14 years of experience in this field and is employed by the company. “Where we definitely stand out is the service we offer here,” Ryan says. “If you did have an issue, you could come in and see a familiar face. You don’t get that if you go to the corporate, big-box stores.” In the spirit of being a truly local business, Marshall Carpet looks out for not only its customers but also the greater community. It gives back in vital ways, such as by sponsoring youth recreational sports and school events. “You’re shopping local and also keeping the money local, because that’s where we give back,” Ryan says. At this point, one might suspect that Marshall Carpet’s superior flooring expertise, customer service, and local philanthropy would come at a cost. The reality, however, is that the prices you’ll find at this shop rival those at the giant, impersonal chain superstores. The “bottom line” for the Marshall Carpet family is measured by customer satisfaction. Call them at 440.449.4977, visit them online at marshallcarpet.com, or email Ryan at ryan@marshallcarpet.com for more information. “Like” Marshall Carpet One on Facebook to keep up with the latest. “We try to have fun; we’re very fair; we’re service-driven,” Ryan says. “We’re going to take care of you.” FLC Marshall Carpet One 1451 SOM Center Road Mayfield Heights 440.449.4977 ryan@marshallcarpet.com marshallcarpet.com below Ryan Wien, of the Marshall Carpet family

Home ConstruCtion witH a LittLe extra is standard By Dylan Tussel PHotos courTesy of Myers HoMes and By JoHn HoffarT

n times when many homebuilders are cutting corners to save a few bucks, Myers Homes continues to go the extra mile. Since 1993, this award-winning local company has set high standards for itself in its Northeast Ohio market. When Myers Homes says it’s “fullservice,” it means it. Myers Homes handles everything from new-home construction to remodeling, construction of additions, and maintenance. Although it has the ability to design and construct entire homes, it hasn’t lost sight of the simple things in life: dirty

gutters, busted toilets, and all types of damage that restless little children cause around the house. While many “full-service” home companies don’t handle these relatively small inconveniences, Myers Homes is happy to. “We want people to be able to get in touch with us if they need us,” explains Rob Myers, owner of Myers Homes. “We want the phone call that there’s some little thing broken that someone needs help with.” When it comes to work done by Myers Homes, though, repairs probably will not be necessary. Myers Homes invests

more in your home now so that you don’t have to later. “We buy good material; we use good material; we’ll spend a little extra on things that nobody ever sees, just because that’s what our game plan is. We try to do everything a little bit better, so things last a little bit longer with less overhead and maintenance,” Rob explains. “We take pride in that.” For instance, when it comes to basement installations, Myers Homes offers a 20year guarantee that the basement will stay dry. It can confidently ensure this because of the high standards it brings to the job in the first place — it spends

more so that it can build your basement with higher-quality materials and take the care to do it right. “The way we do the basement costs more than the way others do it,” Rob says. “They’d charge extra, but for us it’s standard.” Additionally, Myers Homes has been ahead of the game for years in using highquality “green” materials and equipment, such as high-efficiency furnaces, to enhance the quality of its homes. “There are a lot of techniques that builders are just learning about now, that we’ve been using for years to enhance the efficiency of the house itself,” Rob explains. “Things like engineered flooring, different types of insulation, better windows — we’ve been doing it for more than a decade now.” Myers Homes currently is building a home in Canyon Lakes that is available for sale. You can find more information on this and the company’s other work

on myershomesco.com or by emailing rob@myershomesco.com. Myers Homes is based in Chagrin Falls. It has had the honor of receiving the Builder’s Choice Award from the Home Builders Association several times — find out why by calling 440.708.2424 to set up an appointment today. The most popular home technologies that K+ integrates are home-entertainment systems, surround sound, and speakers strategically installed throughout the house, in places such as the kitchen and porch area, so that your music follows you wherever you go.

n eye for design runs in the Capozzi family. Ruthann Capozzi has been in the design business for 20 years, starting at her father’s cabinet shop before opening her own design firm, Capozzi Design Group, nearly a decade ago. “For me, it’s that connection to architecture and my Italian heritage,” Ruthann explains. “It’s my family history that really made me interested in this business.” Capozzi Design handles kitchens and bathrooms, as well as cabinetry for every room of the house. the whole renovation process or work with your interior designer or architect to create the best home space for your lifestyle needs. As for styles, traditional to contemporary, Capozzi Design handles them all. Having traveled to Italy and worked with Italian cabinetry for years, Ruthann understands the European aesthetic and can incorporate it into any design. In fact, European manufacturers often reach out to Capozzi Design, which currently represents a line of Italian vanities available only in a few major U.S. cities. “We will have exactly what they have in New York and Chicago,”

Ruthann explains. “We know good European design, and we do it right here in Cleveland.” Capozzi Design Group actively works to educate each of its consumers in the range of options that exist for them. With offerings such as cabinet comparison — which allows consumers to learn about cabinetry options and the differences between them — as well as actual classes, Capozzi Design ensures that its customers understand the remodeling process and how to navigate it. The class being currently offered is called Kitchen Emergency, which may sound familiar to many.

“I find that people sometimes jump into a renovation because they want to do something to update the kitchen, but they haven’t considered all the ramifications of that,” Ruthann explains. “The first thing we focus on is making sure we have a sound plan for their space, which requires an understanding of their needs and how their kitchen works for them.” Within the same kitchen space, you could spend $20,000 or you could spend $100,000. Capozzi Design works with you to understand how you can make that space work for you and what product mix will make that possible, based on how you use the space, where the value is for you, and your budget. For information about current classes email Ruthann@ CapozziDG.com. “I love to cook,” Ruthann says. “I do specialty cooking, canning, so I understand how a kitchen should work, and that helps me to create a kitchen for someone else.” The Capozzi Design office is located at 45 Pleasant Drive, Suite 305, in Chagrin Falls. Call 440.287.6858 to set up an appointment to see some samples and models at the Chagrin Falls studio or Middleburg Heights showroom. For more information, email info@ capozzidesigngroup.com. “It’s about creating an environment that people can live in. ileen Zimmerman loves to dress challenging, unique windows. Whether they’re arch-top windows, two-story windows, angled windows, French doors, sliding-glass doors, bay windows, or bow windows, Eileen can make them look just as classy as the rest of your home. Eileen drew inspiration from the wallcovering and blind and shade business that her family had for many years. After being involved in that business for 15 years, she started her drapery business from scratch. She created tabletop samples and hit local craft fairs. “The very first craft show I did,” Eileen recalls, “I had some samples made, and I booked four appointments right there on the spot.” Word spread fast, and Eileen quickly became the area’s go-to designer for all sorts of window dressings. Thus, Well Dressed Windows was born. Eileen approaches window dressing from a different angle than other designers, and the resulting quality is noticeably higher. She uses a heavier lining that is 100 percent cotton in a deeper color that does not look like a white sheet from the outside of the home. In addition, she uses a third layer of fabric called interlining. Most workrooms create draperies with only two layers — a decorative face fabric and a back lining — but Eileen adds interlining to make the overall treatment drape more luxurious, as well as softer and fuller. With an ever-growing demand for her designs, though, Eileen and her husband,

This means not only educating people on their options but also providing them personalized attention and tailoring every service to the needs of each client. They begin by visiting your home to see the window in the context of the rest of the house in terms of style and furniture. Eileen shows you her portfolio and some fabric samples as she measures the windows. Browsing the portfolio helps you visualize how different styles will look on your windows and in your home. Next, Eileen works with you to design and create the perfect window dressing

for each room you want to spruce up. “It’s very difficult in this market to find the combination of quality, style, design, and price that we give,” Don explains. “When people really want high-caliber, high-styled, well-designed décor at a reasonable price, we make them happy.” The secret to ensuring every customer’s satisfaction is simple: “We do what’s right, in the customer’s best interest,” Don says. “We try to slow the process down to make sure the customers have time to consider their options, to make sure they’re going to be happy with it for a long time — in six months, in six years, not just the day it’s installed.”

lose your eyes and picture yourself walking out into your backyard. Is your private retreat a comfortable and relaxing realm where you sink into a plush chair, put up your feet, sip your lemonade, and . . . out of the corner of your eye spot your kids, bored with nothing to do, tramping through your flower beds? Or do you open the patio door only to be greeted with an array of neon plastic play structures, scattered toys, dirt patches where your lush garden bed should be, and no place for you to catch 10 minutes of serenity? Sounds like it’s time to reassess your yard. As far-fetched as it may seem

84

FineLifestyles

Cleveland

to you now, it is possible to have a yard that is both comfortable and aesthetically pleasing, as well as exciting and fun for the kids. Let’s start with the family zone. Imagine the family zone as the deck or patio: the natural gathering place where you eat meals or share a snack. Now turn your head. Do you see the sitting area? That’s the place where your family lounges, perhaps reading, playing a game, or just sitting around, laughing. Just steps away is the pool or hot tub. Go ahead and smile: a dip in the pool is one of the most refreshing ways to

cool off in the hot summer months. It’s also one of the most interactive and favourite of family activities, no matter what age. Envision the waterfall cascades that add pleasurable visible elements for you, all while providing the kids endless hours of enjoyment as they splash underneath. Are you feeling inspired? We’re not finished yet. Now, find your way to the kid zone. Are you crossing a lush carpet of grass? The kind you sink your bare toes into? Or are you stepping along a path flanked with oversized rocks the kids love to climb?

There it is, but don’t panic: the kids’ section of the yard isn’t littered with cheaply-made and brightly-colored plastic structures. Your kids’ zone has integrated natural, wooden structures that give your kids the opportunity to explore and play. Notice the playhouse that is customized to match your own home, and smile as you see the kids play house or fort and giggle endlessly. And there’s the kids’ personal garden plot. Your landscaper advises on kidfriendly and hardy plants, and you smile as you picture them planting and watering and watching in wonder as the plants — from baby carrots to strawberries, or sunflowers to snapdragons — push their way out of the soil. Your smile grows bigger as the realization comes to you: having their own garden will help keep them out of yours. This year will be the year your perennials will survive the summer. And finally, your zone. Follow that path or press your feet into the soft grass to the area where you can take 10 minutes, 30 minutes, or even a whole afternoon, and just be. Here, you have a comfortable chair and a small table set up under a tree that provides shade. A water feature provides the soothing, natural sounds that you love having accompany you during your relaxation time. Nearby is an abundant flower bed showcasing your favorites, where you sit on a bench and watch the bees work. It’s calm. It’s serene. It’s yours. FLC

Your pool should be enclosed with a fence and self-latching gate. Many pool owners also install pool or gate alarms to alert when a child is nearby. Always be sure to explain and repeat pool safety to your kids. Discuss your specific needs with your local pool technician. He or she can help you assess your safety requirements.

teve Pattie’s passion for providing exemplary landscaping services began when he was just a child growing up in Cleveland Heights. At age 11, he spent his summers providing the best lawn-mowing service in his neighborhood. This entrepreneurial spirit flourished throughout his teens, eventually leading to his founding of The Pattie Group in 1968. Partnered with his wife, Linda — an artist with an eye for landscape design — Steve moved the company beyond the realm of landscape maintenance to include award-winning landscape design and installation.

86

Steve’s passion for customer service was passed down to his son, Jonas G. Pattie, executive vice president of The Pattie Group, who says the company is “flatout obsessed with having happy clients.” The Pattie Group may be local and family-owned, but its work is renowned nationwide. The group has achieved such notoriety by creating an environment that fosters the growth and development of its employees, who take that and turn it into breathtaking landscapes for clients all over Northeast Ohio.

With a team comprised of seasoned landscape architects and designers, project directors, and horticulturalists, The Pattie Group transforms outdoor environments into works of art that are unparalleled in the industry. And, because this team of experts covers all the bases — from designing the new environment to actually creating and maintaining it — they make sure it’s done properly and stays within budget. The thought of transforming your outdoor living space may seem like a daunting endeavor, and The Pattie

Group knows this, which is why “Pattie Group experiences” come in all sizes and can be tailored to fit practically any budget. “Regardless of a project or property’s size, our goal is to deliver a ‘wow’ experience,” Jonas explains. “Clients are often stunned by all of the things we do and how exceptionally we do them.” Sensory gardens are a hot commodity these days, and they’re perfect for your courtyard or rooftop space. These combine elements of nature to create a blissful getaway: inhale the fresh scent of flowers while enjoying the therapeutic splashes of water features on a sunny day. If you can imagine it, The Pattie Group can create it. Purchasing a Pattie Group landscape isn’t just an investment in a beautiful new living environment for your home, but also an investment in the community. In staying true to its local roots, The Pattie Group proudly supports the community that has supported it through

its development. The Pattie Group was the recipient of the Medical Mutual Philanthropy Award, which is given to the small business most committed to giving back to Northeast Ohio. Cleveland is a wonderful city, and The Pattie Group is committed to keeping it that way. The Pattie Group has two convenient locations on both sides of town, in Novelty and Westlake, and its award-winning work can be seen at such landmarks as the Holden Arboretum and the Cleveland Botanical Garden. Dave Schwalm, owner

He Knows Your Boundaries BY Dylan Tussel

D

“I vowed to stay small, give personal service, and make sure I’m on every job site so everything is done perfectly.”

“It’s me, me, me,” Dave says. “I’m the opposite of any business model.”

And he’s upheld that vow. With the addition of a wife of 14 years and three young sons, Dave’s family has grown more than his company.

ave Schwalm wears many hats at Truline Fence. He’s the president, the secretary, the treasurer — and he also installs the fences.

Born and raised in Shaker Heights, Dave has been installing fences since 1977. He started Truline Fence back in ’89 and promised himself he would never let the company grow out of control. “When you start a company, you get larger; you get crews; you get trucks — I vowed never to do that,” Dave says.

88

FineLifestyles

Cleveland

Dave supplies, installs, and repairs all sorts of fencing materials, such as chainlink, split rail, ornamental aluminum, ornamental iron, and ornamental vinyl, as well as power and non-power estate gates. And, while many larger companies might give you a four-to-six-week

waiting period, Dave finishes nearly every single fence installation within a week of the start date, and he also offers emergency repair services. Th re e - to -f i ve -ye a r wo r k m a n s h i p guarantees are offered on all new fence installation—so if anything goes wrong, he’ll be back to fix it. Whether you need a small repair or want to look into installing a whole new fence, Dave will be there to talk you through it. The consultations are free, and Dave will give you a fair and honest estimate right then and there.

“I come over. I measure. I give you a price,” Dave says. “Everything is a set rate — I don’t scam you based on where you live or what kind of car you drive.” And if you like what you hear at the consultation, it’s no mystery who will show up to perform the work. When working with Truline Fence, you’ll never have to deal with a subcontractor. Everybody knows that fences are very effective tools for keeping young children in and pesky neighbors out. But if you’re the type to spend a bundle on garden plants each year, neighbors aren’t the only ones you want to keep out. Deer are notorious for prancing onto properties, tearing up gardens, and even devouring unplanted seeds. How on Earth can they be stopped? Dave has the answer. “I’ll let you know what’s gonna be effective to keep the kids in and the neighbors and deer out, what it’s gonna look like in three years, what it’s gonna look like in 15 years,” Dave says. “Every question gets answered when I go to the property.” Truline Fence covers all of northern Ohio. Give Dave a call at 440.479.8342, and he’ll come out with samples and photos of previous work. No job is too big or too small for Truline Fence. “We do everything,” Dave says, “from one picket to installing miles of fence.” FLC

You’ll Wonder Why You Waited So Long for Your

oward Grossman entered the landscape construction business nearly 30 years ago, until fate led him into the pool and spa arena. “We were at a client’s house doing landscaping, and his pool contractor abandoned him,” Howard recalls. “We filled in for him, and then the demand for swimming pools just kept coming in.” Howard quickly responded by forming Pro Pool and Spa in 1994 as a full-service design, installation, and maintenance provider for Northeast Ohio. The demand for swimming pools and waterslides kept flooding in, not only from residential clients, but also commercial customers, such as Hilton Inn, Marriott, and the cities of Solon,

90

FineLifestyles

Middleburg Heights, and Broadview Heights. The reason is simple: “Our company is known for its quality of work,” Howard explains. “We have a wealth of knowledge — everything from concrete to gas and electric to tile, pretty much the gamut.” With such a wide range of specialties, Pro Pool carries itself more as a general contractor than as a group that does only pools and spas. As Howard puts it, “One call does it all.” Many people think Pro Pool just provides maintenance services for pools, such as vacuuming, opening, and closing them. While it does offer extremely fast and reliable maintenance services, it also does so much more. Howard has decades of experience in landscape

design construction, and he also has a strong partnership with his son Brian’s construction company, BG Contracting LLC, allowing Pro Pool to handle basically any pool-related job. It designs, constructs, services, and repairs pools and waterslides. They start every pool design and installation job by taking a snapshot of the landscape they’re working with. They then use a computer to generate a blueprint of the design, as well as a snapshot and video of what the pool will look like by the end. “The customer gets to see the entire thing before signing on,” Howard explains. They then handle everything from land clearing and preparation to tree removal—everything

it takes to design and install the pool. By handling every step of the process, Pro Pool ensures that every customer will get exactly what he or she is looking for. “We’re prompt; we communicate; and we’re on the job until it’s complete,” Howard assures. Angie’s List has corroborated this for the past six years by continually awarding Pro Pool its coveted Super Service Award. All of Pro Pool’s installers are experienced professionals in creating sculptured concrete-gunite swimming pools and spas. If you let them handle the design and construction, you’ll soon be lounging by your dream pool or soaking in your spa. Although many see pools, hot tubs, and spas as luxuries, they actually are vital for your health and relaxation. Just a short dip in a hot tub, for instance, can do wonders in relieving muscle and joint pain, trouble sleeping, and stress — which, these days, is pretty universal.

they’ve transformed it into a destination store that includes a lush greenhouse, nursery, apparel boutique, and gift and home décor shop complete with gift-wrapping services. The family-owned Breezewood is known for high quality plant material, knowledge staff and great selection. Throughout the springtime it has thousands to choose from, with fresh, colorful plant material coming in daily. Breezewood also offers a variety of other custom floral

arrangements, which you can pick up in store or have delivered across most of Northeast Ohio. “They do absolutely beautiful work,” Whitney says. “They do everything from everyday pieces to weddings, funeral pieces, birthdays, holidays, both silk and fresh. Pretty much you can put them to any task, and they’ll figure out a way to make it work.” Whether you’re browsing the selection of lush plants and flowers in the greenhouse or taking a walk through the nursery,

Breezewood’s expert staff can help answer any of your gardening questions. “The employees are knowledgeable about everything,” Whitney says, “from what chemicals and fertilizers to use to growth patterns and the plants themselves.” Breezewood is so confident in the quality of its trees and shrubs that they all are backed by unprecedented guarantees — five years if Breezewood plants them, one year otherwise. But if you decide that a few shrubs aren’t enough, and you want to completely transform your outdoor living space, Breezewood also has a creative landscape design team that handles everything from design to installation and maintenance. “We offer everything from the weekend worrier project to full landscape design and installation,” Whitney explains. “If they want a patio and a full landscape, we can do that. If they just want one tree planted, we can do that too.” Breezewood also has an active presence in the community, supporting various causes from Susan G. Komen for the Cure to local sports teams. “We really try to help out our community as much as possible,” Whitney says. “They’re the ones we support, because they support us.” You can reach the shop at 440.543.2124 and “like” Breezewood Gardens & Gifts on Facebook to keep up with the latest. garage should be a sanctuary fit for a BMW. But the sad reality is that too often it has been reduced to a repository for all the junk people think they might need later but should have donated, sold or discarded. They’re always going to clean it next weekend — but until that elusive weekend, the garage will remain a disaster zone, unfit for even the ugliest of lemons. That weekend has come. All you have to do is call Mario F.X. Salwan at Garage Finisher, and he’ll take care of the rest. Garage Finisher is a full-service garagemakeover provider that will be in and out faster than you can come up with another excuse not to makeover your garage.

94

FineLifestyles

Cleveland

When Mario says “full service,” he means it. The professionals at Garage Finisher begin by removing everything from your garage, storing items you still want in a storage trailer and discarding or donating anything you don’t want. Then they handle any work you choose including Lifetime Warranty Flooring System, epoxy wall painting, attractive cabinets and PVC Slatwall System. When Garage Finisher is done, they remove everything from storage and organize it in your new cabinets and slatwall. And, they do all this in an average of three days. If, on the other hand, you want just to have your unsightly flooring redone,

Mario F.X. Salwan, owner

Garage Finisher still provides the exact same removal, storage, and reorganization services for everything inside your garage and can do the floor in just one day. According to Mario, you will “come home from work and not have to lift a finger.” Many mixtures of stone and epoxy that are used for garage flooring turn yellow over time and they trap water and other contaminants because they are porous and use old-fashioned epoxy. Garage Finisher provides completely nonporous floors, preventing the absorption of anything into the surface. The difference is polyaspartic, a resin that’s four times as strong as epoxy, doesn’t yellow or degloss like epoxy does, and was created by Bayer Chemical. This is the same flooring that Garage Finisher uses in car dealerships. This flooring comes in a variety of colors and textures and is also fast-drying, so you should be able to drive on it the day after it’s applied. Garage Finisher confidently offers a lifetime warranty on its work, which covers issues such as staining, cracking, hot-tire pick-up and delamination.

Before

When it comes to finishing your garage, flooring is only half the battle. Over time, garages go downhill: the paint peels; walls crack and junk builds up. And this is most people’s main entry into the house.

After

Garage Finisher will complement the flooring with strong, durable slatwall that can include custom-sized hooks and storage baskets, as well as metal or wood cabinets that have adjustable shelves and hinges for convenience and organization. As with the flooring, the slatwall and cabinets come with lifetime warranties. You will be much happier when you arrive home each day and guests will be amazed by your clean garage. Visit garagefinisher.com for more information about Garage Finisher, a gallery of its work, and a quick 5 minute video that details the makeover process. One Sharp, Service StatiOn: Award-Winning Superior Service By Dylan Tussel

om Carey grew up with a passion for cars, inspired by the popular hot rods of the 1960s. Today, he owns the award-winning Center Heights Service auto-repair shop, which boasts top ratings from the Better Business Bureau and AAA and is the longest-running business in Warrensville Heights, located on the border of Shaker Heights on Warrensville Center Road.

Tom grew up nearby in Shaker Heights and attended St. Dominic and Cathedral Latin High School before meeting the love of his life, Cathy, his wife of 30 years. The two have a son and a daughter, Nicholas and Samantha, who live on the west coast. Tom worked at Center Heights for several years before he and Cathy purchased the shop from its former owners in 1982.

Tom took a great shop and made it even better. Center Heights became AAA approved in 1985 and has remained in great standing — a testament to the shop’s superior service and hospitable atmosphere. The waiting area is decorated with antique signage and stocked with vintage magazines and complimentary popcorn and coffee. The décor may be felicitously antiquated, but the equipment is anything but — just

five years running. Center Heights also received the Angie’s List Super Service Award in 2011.

Tom is an Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified master technician, and all of his employees are ASE-certified and able to service all car makes and models. They even offer shuttle services for anyone whose car needs to stay at the shop. Besides being a superior service provider, the eco-friendly Center Heights is a Cooper Tire dealer and an Interstate Battery Platinum Dealer.

Every customer comes in with unique needs, but one issue that’s universal is the soaring price of gas. Tom offers a solution: “You spend $100 on service, and you get into the Gas Club.” Members pay wholesale prices to fill up their tanks. “Nobody else can offer you that, period.”

“We’re friendly,” Tom says, “and we can offer better service than anyone else around here — the dealers included.” But don’t take his word for it — the quality of service is reflected in the shop’s A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau and receipt of AAA’s Top Shop Award for

Another prevalent, yet underpublicized, issue is the dulling of knives. Luckily, knife sharpening is another of Tom’s passions, which is why his shop now offers professional knife-sharpening services. With the addition of a Swedish-made Tormek T-7 — a top-of-the-line watercooled precision knife sharpener — there’s never a dull moment at Center Heights. The service provided at Center Heights

extends beyond paying customers. Need an expert to address your carrelated concerns? Tom accepts and answers questions emailed to him at tom@centerheights.com or tweeted to @centerheights. “I’m happy to answer any kind of car questions,” Tom says. This includes free second opinions. Even if you don’t need car service right now, Tom encourages a visit to the shop, which is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. “Come in, enjoy a cup of coffee, and just come say hi,” he says. “No purchase necessary.” FLC Center Heights Service 3884 Warrensville Center Road 216.751.3387 tom@centerheights.com

Hit tHe Road: YouR SummeR of RVing By Cathie Watson

D

iscovering the beauty that a Midwestern summer presents can be as easy as getting in, buckling up and letting the adventure begin. Well, it can be under the right circumstances. Now, I am not referring to cramming everyone in the family four-door sedan, where legs can not be stretched out for fear of tipping over the cooler (usually found crammed in between the back and front seats). With the kids fighting one another for leg and elbow room and the poor dog panting and whimpering, your trip can become a chore, not a pleasure, and rob you of the calm environment conducive to enjoying the scenery. Right? Sound familiar? Remind you of other trips you have taken? Then maybe it is time to head to an RV dealer and check out what

98

FineLifestyles

Cleveland

options might exist to make your future road travels more comfortable, enjoyable and memorable. There are several things to keep in mind when you consider what type of RV would be appropriate for your needs. But before you get to choosing, there are some questions to ask yourself: • How many people do you need to accommodate? • How many drivers will be sharing that duty and what equipment do they feel comfortable operating? • Will you primarily be making long or short trips (or a combo)? Or are you a “destination” vacationer with the desire for some sightseeing along the way? • How much storage room, especially refrigerated, do you require?

• Will you be doing the majority of cooking inside the RV or on the outdoor barbecue? • What types of activities do you enjoy, and what equipment do you need to bring with you? • How will you keep the kids entertained during the trip and after you reach your destination? • In the event of poor weather, do you want to have entertainment in the RV (for example, a video game system, satellite TV or internet)? • What is the towing capacity of your vehicle? • What is your budget? Having considered your needs and wants, remember that there are two broad categories of RVs: towable and motorized. Each have distinct features, advantages and benefits. Towable RVs are designed to be unhitched when you arrive at a campsite, which allows you use of your vehicle while on site. This option is great if you need to

head into the closest town to pick up any necessities you either forgot or have run out of, or when you just want the freedom to explore locally at your own pace. Keep in mind the rated towing capacity of your vehicle—or be prepared to rent a suitable one if your unit is not sufficient. Motorized RVs combine transportation and living quarters, and offer the added benefit of allowing towing of your personal vehicle, boat, or trailer, but are less maneuverable in some areas and some operators may find them more difficult to handle. One important thing to consider when going with a motorized model is how you plan get around when you arrive at your destination. A motorized RV may not be what you want to drive in remote areas or across poor roads. Once you consider what will meet your needs and what you are prepared to spend, then grab the family, cram them in the car and hit the local RV dealer. This time, however, you can promise them it could be the last time they need to travel this way. FLC
